The Best Bars and Restaurants for Late-Night Dining in Portland | Eater Portland

"This eclectic Bite on Belmont food cart is specifically designed to serve the late-night crowd, opening at 8 p.m. and serving everything from steamed clams to prosciutto-Brie sandwiches until 2 a.m. The deviled eggs are a real draw, piped with a creamy, not-too-eggy, everything bagel-seasoned filling and topped with smoked steelhead from former neighbors Viking Soul Food. All the pickles — including the pickled beets on the deviled eggs — are made in-cart." - Thom Hilton

At Belmont Food Cart Night Owl, Lunch Is Served at Midnight | Eater Portland

"Operating out of a Belmont Street food cart at 4255 SE Belmont Street, this is Portland’s only explicitly late-night–focused food cart, run by Teressa Snelling, who flips on the neon “open” sign at 8 p.m. and often serves customers well past the official 2 a.m. closing. I see her topping deviled eggs with smoked steelhead and house-pickled beets, loading takeout containers with quinoa salad studded with Cosmic Crisp apples, steaming clams in white wine and dill butter, and stacking an extensive sandwich menu (The Murphy, the Sassy Cassy, The Tony) that ranges from deli-style toasted ciabatta with baked ham and provolone to vegetarian options with beets and hazelnut gremolata; smaller “owl bites” include feta dip, pickle plates, and apple-poppyseed slaw. Her wagyu hot dogs are finished with creative toppings like BBQ aioli, and her chili—reflecting her Mexican heritage—combines tri-tip and ground beef. She generally runs the cart solo, works extremely long days to maintain control over the food, and honors relationships and influences (serving Viking Soul Food smoked fish in several dishes) in a menu built for night-shift workers, doulas, nurses, and restaurant staff seeking something beyond standard bar fried food." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

My coworkers and I were on our way to the airport but wanted our last meal to support local in Portland so we thought we'd give Night Owl PNW a try. We called them around 8:05 pm (they open at 8 pm) to place a pick up order and they said that they were running late so they'd have our food ready at 9:00 which we told them that it's no problem so they took our order. Heads up, this is a food truck in between 'The Bite on Belmont' and 'Kind Coffee' so if you want to try Night Owl PNW, you're going to have to street park. My coworkers and I came to the food truck right around 8:50 but they didn't open their truck until 9:10. The owner told us that the sandwiches would be ready within a couple minutes but unfortunately we didn't get to our food until 10. While I appreciate the owners trying to make up for the lateness by throwing us a coupe extra cookies, my coworkers and I ended up rushing to the airport and could not enjoy the sandwiches in a relaxed setting like how we originally planned. Here is what we ordered: 1) Where's the Beef? Loaded with roast beef and I enjoyed the pickled red onions! There's also horseradish so if you like that, then this is a good choice 2) Sassy Cassy Melt I loved this one so much. It's like a charceuterie board in a sandwich. The creaminess from the brie, saltiness from the prociutto, and the sweetness from the apple slices & fruit preserves is just *chef's kiss* 3) The Murphy Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised from this one. Similar to the 'Where's the Beef', this sandwich is loaded with ham and I loved how there was garlic aioli and pickled red onion to enhance the flavors. 4) Presto Pesto Similar to The Murphy, this was another sandwich I was pleasantly surprised with. The pesto, greens, and tomato were fresh and I loved the toasted ciabatta bread. 5) The Tony This was an interesting one. It's like a pizza but sandwich... but also like a big toasted bread with pizza toppings? It's a little confusing but it tasted pretty good! I guess this will be good if you're craving a pizza but you happen to be at this food truck haha. Dessert 1) Cookies & Cream Cookie I really liked this cookie! It had that crunch on the outside but soft texture on the inside 2) Double Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Cookie Although I love chocolate and peanut butter cookies, this one was falling apart a little too easily so it made it hard to eat but that flavors were great 3) Wild Oatmeal Cookie I personally don't like raisins but I enjoyed how there were potato chips on top to give it that sweet and salty combo. In general, I wish all the cookies were a little bigger in size because $2.50 for these tiny cookies are definitely a little pricey. But it's also in Portland so I'm not that surprised. 4) Death by chocolate cupcake Super rich but a delicious chocolate cupcake that will satisfy your sweet tooth for sure! Overall, really solid sandwich place that's carefully combined with a variety of high quality ingredients. I love the decorations and the creative names that goes with the food. I really wanted to give this place a 5/5 and again, I appreciate the owners for trying their best and giving us some free cookies to make up for the delay but my coworkers and I were given a false sense of hope when the owner said it would only be a few minutes when it was actually close to an hour. Plus we ended up having to rush to the airport from the delay so that was a little stressful. But if you're just swinging by this place and it's already open & ready to go, I would totally give this place a try!

Best deviled eggs and the wildest (and most delicious) hot dog/glizzy I've ever had, hands down. What a treat.

This spot is AMAZING and the staff wonderful. While waiting for my order, there was a very rude customer waiting for their order. They were annoyed that their order was taking longer than 10min. TEN minutes on a super busy Saturday night… you kidding me? Needless to say, this person was delusional. The employees working were crushing it and turning out orders way faster than I would have ever expected. They handled this cry baby drama queen with so much grace & poise. And the food… SO good! I ordered the BLAT with additional turkey & I’m obsessed. I want it everyday. Keep doing what you’re doing, you all are rockstars. <3 We’ll definitely be back!

There's a reason this place has nothing but 5 star reviews. Places open until 2am don't often have a "fresh chopped herb finish applied by hand at plating" level of detail. Places with that level of detail don't generally have immaculate vibes and Lizzo blasting. And places with amazing savory sandwiches don't usually pair it with equal pastry skill and fresh, warm cookies and ice cream. This place has it all. Your taste buds will be satisfied. Cool little beer cart next to it for a drink too.

Google
Delicious sandwich, but I had to wait 50 minutes for it, and there wasn’t a big line. I’m not exaggerating. I checked the time on my receipt. So, plan ahead. Order a drink at the other cart. Relax.

We stumbled on this spot after an event and were super excited to find a late night spot for something unique. Unfortunately, it seems the concept is great but execution very flawed... and slow. Only 1 person ahead of us but our 2 sandwiches took almost an hour. We almost walked away twice and only didn't say anything because they were so nice. After all that waiting, I was expecting a masterpiece, but the flavors just didn't work. My pork sandwich had so much pickled veg, all I tasted was brine and the tuna was just weird so we ended up throwing most of it away. Very disappointed in my experience, but hopefully they keep evolving & improving.

Google
One of the best sandwiches I've ever had. Delicious bread stacked so high I could barely fit it in my mouth. Not an eat-in-the car sandwich: you should eat this with a stack of napkins and a bib. The staff was really friendly, and were genuinely excited to provide excellent food.

Google
Absolutely insane sandwiches. The flavor profiles are so well thought out. I got the prosciutto brie melt, my husband got the tony, and both were so phenomenal that I could not pick a favorite if you were holding me over a vat of acid. Save room for dessert.

Yelp
Phenomenal late night eats from a Portland food icon, Chef T$ delivers amazing food and desserts. Always made fresh, always delicious. I don't think there's anything on the menu that doesn't taste amazing. Pro-move: enjoy a beverage from Hindsight while you wait, food can sometimes take a while but it's always worth it. Sad the pod isn't especially well lit at night but Night Owl & Hindsight have made sure to keep the back corner lit for late night guests. Perfect post bar meal if you're hopping around on Belmont, and feels a little less hectic since it's further away from the bar hubbub and more residential. Favs: literally any dessert, Chili, the clam jam...literally any sandwich...

Yelp
I was incredibly excited to try this establishment both because their menu looks amazing, but also to support the Portland food truck style industry. Unfortunately, the experience could have been slightly better. I was driving a couple hours north to Portland on a work trip to take a red eye home, and I wanted to grab something with my friends before we got to the airport. The concept of Night Owl is neat because they actually don't open until 8pm and they're open late, so, we called ahead and were immediately told that they were behind and our order would be ready until 9pm. We showed up just before 9, and they didn't even open up their window until about 9:10pm. We were slightly on a schedule and were slightly worried that this could throw a wrench in it. We actually didn't receive our order until about 9:40pm. The store front is in a friendly little food truck alley. The staff was very friendly. For our troubles they threw in an extra dessert. We actually tried most of their sandwich offerings. The "Murphy" and "where's the beef" were my personal favorites. Great flavors and very hearty. The "Tony" and the "mama sass" fell a little short for me in terms of flavors, execution, textures, etc. the pesto Turkey is also worth trying. In terms of desserts, we tried each cookie, and while they were fine, they sounded much better than they actually taste. Not to mention they are small cookies for $2.50. All told, the staff was friendly, and we probably should have anticipated that there should have been delays, but this experience unfortunately did not live up to the hype. Some tips: Make sure you have a buffer of time! Try many sandwiches as these are relatively affordable. Cheers!!

Yelp
I went at midnight super faded. The sandwich was a little pricy, I think $14. It took them 35 mins for them to make the BLTA sandwich. I was a little pissed off because of how long it was taking but when she called us up to get our food, it was the most incredible sandwich ive ever tasted. I'll definitely be coming here again.

Yelp
Wow wow wow no lie one of the bestest sandwiches both my husband and I ever ate!!! He had the BLTA and I had the roast beef. They were warm and fresh and there was layers and layers of complex flavors that all blended so beautifully with every bite. The deviled eggs were very tasty as well. Super nice lady making the sandwiches with so much love We also had the berry cheesecake brownie which was out of this world. So glad we stumbled on this gem!!!

Yelp
Holy cow was that a delicious sandwich! How amazing to stumble upon this oasis of gastric delight in the middle of the night! There was actual organic arugula on my sandwich! Nothing was fried or made ahead of time. There was no microwaving. Truly one of the best roast beef sandwiches I have ever had.and the two people working the cart were so lovely! What a charming discovery. Can't wait to come back.

Yelp
I don't usually leave a yelp review unless I feel very passionately but I'd give this place 100 stars if I could. Portland is in desperate need of bomb late night food spots and I think I found my favorite one. I ordered the pesto sandwich and it was perfect. The bread was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, perfect sauce to bread ratio, generous portions of meat and cheese and overall just a perfect sandwich. It's also huge I was hungry and could only eat half of it. I also got one of the Oreo cookie things and that was insane as well. You get to chose between a bag of chips and a la croix with your sandwiches. The person working the cart was super friendly and I recommend this place to anyone who's been on the look out for good late night food like me!

Yelp
This food cart stays open LATE-- and when I say LATE, I mean waaaay past when the bars and clubs close. The baked goods and the tuna melt are incredible. The tuna melt is truly the best tuna melt I have ever had-- open-faced, hearty, and stacked, it's damn perfect. There is tender love and care out into the creation of this menu, and the food is all made with excellent and wholesome ingredients. Also, the owner of this cart has a heart of gold, and the love is imbedded in all the delicious offerings. I cannot recommend this food cart enough, worth the trip!!!! Best late night food in Portland! I will write another review with pics next time-- I ate too fast! :)

Yelp
came on a saturday night 9pm ish and it took about half an hour to get our food. the blat has bread that is too hard and crunchy and the sandwich falls apart as im trying to eat it. the clam jam is full of clams but the bread that came with it was toasted to a crouton instead of just being toasted bread. the prosciutto with brie was also having the same bread problem. the cookies there were not too bad, but overall a 2/5.
google avatar

Yelp
Massive sandwich!! I got the turkey pesto sandwich and it was delicious super fresh and well dressed. I definitely want to come back and try other menu items everything looked good. It took a little bit of time for the food to be made but there is only one person in the truck so you just need to be patient! The food truck is on Belmont in a food truck pod.

Yelp
Don't sleep on this spot, you're doing yourself a disservice if you don't eat through this carts menu The sandwiches are sooo damn good, AND the desserts she has are phenomenal! The Tony, Where's the beef, The murph, The Turkey Pesto! It's honestly hard to recommend one over another, they're all so wonderfully different. I had the Tony for the first time yesterday and it was everything I could ever ask for and more. I don't know how to put into words how amazing this cart is! The deviled eggs are something I've never experienced in my life. You NEED to try them, they blow your aunts eggs at thanksgiving OUT OF THE WATER!

Emily W.

Yelp
Definitely a gem of a late night spot! The lady who runs the cart was awesome! Didn't take a pic, but I loved their oatmeal raisin cookie too. We thought the sandwiches could have been better, but we loved the atmosphere/vibe.

Cait O.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. I was specifically craving a beet salad with goat cheese late at night and was delighted to not only find a non-fast food place open, but one with such a thought out & delicious menu. Having a place with healthy, gourmet food clearly crafted with love is already such a treat but to be open during night owl hours is unheard of! I got The Goat and was immediately blown away first bite. Thank you so much for such a delicious salad. I look forward to ordering at all times of the day in the future.

Yelp
I love this place :) Literally all the food We've tried has been 20/10 and I'm so glad there's something this good open late within walking distance of where we live !
google avatar

Yelp
They are open late (almost every other place in the area was closed by 8:30pm on a Thursday) and make incredible food. We ordered the Murphy and BLTA sandwiches and were blown away. The worker also threw in a few cookies just for waiting a little longer due to a rush of online orders before we arrived. Great lighting and music too.

Pete Y.

Yelp
This place flat-out rocks. Awesome food n folks!

Sarah B.

Yelp
Omg . Too fucking good. The cookies are ridiculous. And, the owners are so sweet!!!! Come here!! Eat all the food. Not one bad item.

Yelp
I've been here a few times since it opened and each time there were new delicious and seasonal food to try. I LOVE the sandwiches and soups the flavors are so original. Ive gotten the desserts each time: PB chocolate chip, Oreo crumble cookies and diff. mini cheesecakes are to die for! I love that the portions and price of the food are just the right amount to try a few different things every time I go. Looking forward to see what they have next!!

Yelp
Their sandos are amazing: highlights-the baked ham sando is what you wish your grandparents made, the beetnik is what you wish you could make if you're vegetarian. Also, get the chili. Well done food at a good price.

Justin B.

Yelp
food is delicious and the atmosphere is awesome. Definitely try the deviled eggs!
