Bar Owner Bobby Heugel Criticizes Houston’s Rising Cocktail Prices - Eater Houston

"“All of our standard cocktails at Anvil, Better Luck Tomorrow, The Pastry War and Nightingale (with the exception of a Ramos...which is more a methodological tradition at this point) are still $12 or less.”" - Amy McCarthy

Good bar with great service. Live bands on weekends and vinyl spun on weekdays. Feel free to request to hear your fav band on vinyl, you'd be surprised what they have. Oh, and the drinks are great. Try something off of their menu. Happy bar time....

Google
Great music, great drinks, great vibes. I definitely enjoy coming here on Thursdays when it's not jam packed. The interior is so hip. They have a record player and a million records! The set up is awesome!

Google
I'm going back just for drinks; the bartender here made the best drinks I've had at any Houston bar. It's a lot more relaxed than some of the surrounding bars/clubs. I enjoyed it. I could have a conversation without screaming.

Google
Great atmosphere, amazing cocktails, nice service! Happy and lively crowd! Loved it there!

Jacob Lipp

Google
Super bar. Great atmosphere. Beautiful room. Commitment to live music (and great vinyl) in one of the most intimate rooms in the city. Mike runs the place, and really makes his guests feel comfortable. Cocktails that are thoughtful and accessible. A terrific addition to the city.

Fe P.

Google
Awesome bartender. I think they should save the blasting music for the weekends. I want to go back for the drink I had, but I could barely hear in there on a Tuesday. There were only 3 other people there, so the loudness felt extra. Please note the great bartender and drink mixing. Extra star for that.

Ashley Lai

Google
A newer bar on Main but the lively music shows and expert bartenders have made this into a bar that has its own personality. With a variety of cocktails and at least 5 beers on tap you can find the perfect drink for you! I'm not the biggest fan of the acoustics, but the bands are always extremely talented and make it work! Sit up in the balcony on a weeknight for "table service" with the assistance of the dumbwaiter. If you are a fan of ginger beer go for the dark and stormy.

Google
Good cocktails and great atmosphere. The upper deck can be fun, but the bouncer warned us every 15 minutes of the hazards of standing near the handrail. Small annoyance, but overall a fun stop when downtown.

Yelp
I had heard of this bar for a while now, but when I found myself of downtown Houston on a weekend night I figured I would give it a try It's not considered a speakeasy but there is zero signage from the street. There is a bouncer out front checking IDs, and when you head through a set of doors and up a dark stairway. This might sound creepy, but it's actually exciting. As you make it to the top of the stairs and open another door you enter a very hip and intimately lit bar The bar itself is fully stocked with virtually everything. It's aesthetically appealing. There were literally several bartenders working the long bar It was fairly packed, but it never felt like people had to crowd around the bar and stack in line to place an order The bartenders were incredibly professional. It is apparent that they take a lot of pride in their craft. I was also impressed with their small talk. A couple bartenders actually gave us recommendations and offered some history of the bar There is a wide variety of in house signature cocktails. These are all described on the menu, they show you what glassware it comes in, and it identifies which bartender created the recipe. Beyond this there are other classic cocktails to choose from Besides the tasty cocktails I was most impressed by how affordable the cocktails were. They aren't cheap in quality or price... but they aren't say "NYC cocktail prices" Some tips: Ask the bartender which cocktail they prefer. Also, ask which bartender is which, because their initials are on the menu next to their signature cocktails. These Old Fashion is their best seller, and if you go on Wednesday nights they have $2 Bicardi Old Fashions Cheers!!

Yelp
First off this is the least known and best happy hour in Houston. Every once in a while when I'm downtown and don't feel like beating rush hour or I'll stop in here. It's a great atmosphere. The bartenders all know a lot about their extensive spirit selection. Cannot recommend enough. It is a beautiful dark bar with which wood surfaces Pretty sure they don't have any food. The bartenders here are all on Power with Anvil.

Yelp
One of the best bars I've been to in a loooooonf time. Each drink we ordered was amazing. The menu is clearly well thought out and crafted to perfection. Capt Foxheart's also has such a cool speak easy vibe. What a cute gem of a bar! I've already been back to celebrate a friend's birthday!
google avatar

Yelp
This was a super fun way to end the night! You gotta walk past a bunch of clubs to find the law office doors. We completely passed it and happened to walk back. There's 2 different ones but only one is the entrance & you'll see the bouncer. After you enter, you go walk up a long stairway to enter the speakeasy. They have both indoor & outdoor seating. They have their Christmas decorations up so it's definitely a vibe! Drinks were so good! And service was also great. Would definitely come back here, cheers !

Yelp
Really quaint and cool speakeasy. A bartender at another nearby bar suggested it to us when we mentioned we were visiting and jusy checking out some chill lowkey spots. Glad we stopped in! The drinks were delightful and the prices were surprisingly reasonable. I think often times the speakeasy ambiance justifies a higher drink price but was pleasantly surprised to find otherwise here.

Yelp
Best bar ever! I love this place so much! We had an incredible night here ! Our friend knows the owner. And we were so happy to be here and enjoy this amazing place. Here was incredible and we loved everything about this bar, which was reminding us of New Orleans.

Yelp
This is a true speakeasy. I knew to look for a law office, but there are two entrances to the building for law offices. Look for the one with a dude who may or may not be a door guy because of his nonchalance lol. Once you see him, you'll know that you're at the right place. Upon entering, we saw that it was a nice sized bar with a super chill and laid back vibe (my kind of place). We were able to grab two seats at the bar, but they also have tables as well as seating on the balcony. The patrons here are really friendly. We chatted with a guy who frequents the place and he told us that if we can't find a drink that we like on the menu, let the bartenders know and they will create a cocktail based on our flavor preferences (those are the best kind of bartenders)! The menu rotates seasonally. I ordered the Tiger Beet. It's a gin based drink that came with a beet garnish. I don't even like beets, but I've had beet cocktails before and have enjoyed them. I liked this one, but it was a tad too sweet for my preference. My cousin had a drink called the Polanco Daisy. It was good, but extremely sweet. Our bartender was Christine and she was great! She was very attentive and just so nice. She even hooked us up with a shot. As the patron had advised, I told her what I typically like to drink and she created a shot that tasted like a French 75. It was really good! We had so much fun! I don't go out to bars downtown that often, but I really enjoyed Captain Foxheart's! I'm looking forward to coming back.

Yelp
The drinks are all so good. There are no misses on the menu, something for everyone. I love the vibe & the patio is nice when it's nice outside (limited time in Houston, but still). The bathroom was clean, too.

Yelp
Who doesn't love a good speakeasy. Nestled away up a wooden staircase next to an attorneys office sits a high-craft cocktail bar. With vermouths I could never dream up, and a bourbon list that will even make an aficionado blush, you name the drink, they can make it. Other than a place to have great conversations with friends, and a place to make memories, Foxhearts offers knowledgeable staff, that will impress you. This place is an awesome pre-late dinner spot, or great for a late-night night cap.
google avatar

Jason P.

Yelp
Captain Foxheart's is definitely the spot for a killer old fashion. It's also nice that it's in a busy area but hidden away from all the noise. Always my first stop when coming to Houston.

Yelp
Came here for a wedding after party. The couple generously had an open tab running for the duration we were there. It was packed, there was only one bartender there for about an hour (before backup arrived) and drinks were coming out slowly. Nothing was happening at the tables so my group migrated to the bar for service. I got the pink orange red which was the right amount of fruity and sweet. I liked the vibes indoor and out but hated the narrow and dark stairwell and the front door. It's supposed give off speak easy vibes with the fake law offfice sign, but there's an actual law office just a few doors down so it was hard to figure out which one was actually the bar.
google avatar

Megan K.

Yelp
Great place. I'd say it's a speakeasy because there's no signage, but we were told by another bar owner that the owner is just too lazy to get a sign. We opened a door that advertised law services and walked up the stairs. When we got to the top, we saw a door that wasn't labeled on the left and went in. What a cool vibe! We had delicious drinks made by a really sweet bartender(we didn't get her name), and took them to the balcony, where we were the only ones for awhile. What a great view of downtown! We highly enjoyed this bar!

Yelp
The fact that this place is not 5 stars is completely insane to me. We were wandering around the area, popping into places, and two different bartenders told us that the real place to get a great drink is Bad News. So we stopped in to check it out and ended up hanging out with Drew for a few hours. All of the drinks we had were Drew's own creations, and they were creative, interesting, and so so good. Bad News isn't pretentious or showy--all you're going to get are drinks that taste incredible, without a lot of fanfare. If that's what you're looking for, you absolutely cannot miss this place. And make sure to try anything with "D.J." next to it! Also, Mezcal Mondays! ($6 an ounce, $8 select mezcal cocktails)
google avatar

Dusty J.

Yelp
The artisan cocktails are awesome! Ambiance and bar tenders make the place. The service is quick and drinks do not miss.
google avatar

Tiffany J.

Yelp
We stopped by while walking around downtown and absolutely loved it! It was super cute and the drinks were good. The bartenders were busy but still very nice. We'll definitely come back when we're downtown.

Yelp
September 23, 2021 came in from Galveston for the day. I've had this bar tagged on Yelp for 10 years and today was the day! From past Yelp reviews I knew there was no signage outside so, you had to know what to look for. It's right in between Dean's, Clark's and H & M on Main; we got lucky and found free street parking...and just looked for the door with law office on it. Went up the stairs and it's the door on your far left...no sign on that door so just open it and wah-la...old school bar with chandeliers and an small outside balcony Adam (the bartender) was friendly and made a great cocktail. We sat on the balcony and chilled while the Friday 5 o'clock traffic went by.

Yelp
Coolest bar in the downtown area. Finding it though takes some skill and investigative work. Bartenders are fantastic and extremely knowledgeable.
google avatar

Teyah S.

Yelp
While visiting Houston, a friend told us about this cute speakeasy with a rooftop. Can I just say, this place is fantastic! From the cool entrance to the ambiance of the bar to the skill of the mixologist. A great time was had and I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

James K.

Yelp
Absolutely fun speakeasy. I will be going back next time me out for an evening downtown. Warning they are considered a Negroni bar. I hate Negroni so luckily the have other options
google avatar

Jim B.

Yelp
Love the balcony! Drinks are very well crafted. It's somewhat of a speakeasy with no signage so the atmosphere is pretty cool. Bar service was top notch and the private barrel bourbon was very good!
google avatar

Gene L.

Yelp
Surprised this place has anything less than 5 stars! Houston is very lucky to have such an incredible bar: - inventive and always rotating cocktail menu at very reasonable prices (rarely have had anything that I disliked), in addition to classics - awesome vibes and outdoor balcony for hanging out/people watching - super friendly and affable bartenders - out-of-this-world happy hour specials ($5 old fashioneds, and damn good ones at that) This place is easily in my top 5 cocktail bars in Houston!
google avatar

Dylan W.

Yelp
Just recently moved to Houston and was having trouble finding a genuine cocktail bar. This place was definitely that! A super relaxing ambience, great spirit selection, and very friendly bartenders. Really enjoyed the menu as well as letting the bartender just make something random, can definitely tell the guy really knew his craft. Also, our bartender Adrian gave a super dope rec for tacos after the bar. Great bar will definitely be back.

Yelp
Truly felt like I stepped into 1920. A cool speakeasy, with outstanding service and excellent drinks. When looking for it didn't you have to know what your looking for or you'll never find it, which only adds to its charm.

Yelp
Hands down one of my favorite bars in Houston. I've lost track of the number of times I've stopped by after a long work day or simply to catch up with friends. Look for the door marked with "Attorney at Law" and ascend the dimly light staircase to your destination. Make a mental note of this because you'll have to have enough wits about you by the end of the night to descend the steps unscathed. Yes there's a bit of a speakeasy feel to the place, but what I like the most is the cozy, polished vibe. The interior is lined with dark wood and lit by the subdued glow of banker's lamps. The outdoor balcony has great views, and depending on the night you can bask in the monotonous sounds of downtown or the chaotic happenings on the streets below you. The bartenders here are very friendly and dish out some expertly crafted concoctions. I have yet to pick out something on the menu that has left me disappointed. Everything has been great. They have happy hour until 6:30 with some strong classics on the menu. Snag an old fashioned during happy hour and you'll feel like you're robbing them.

Yelp
This is an amazing, hidden gem! I wasn't planning on coming here as there's no sign at least not that I could see. It's right between Cherry and High and Dry. We were deciding which of the two we wanted to hit first when the door man invited us in. We walked up the narrow stairway and walked up do the door of an attorney's office. Hmmmm. But over to the left was an unlabeled door. That was the door to this "speakeasy". Loved the ambiance and 80s music right away. It was early (9ish) so it wasn't too busy yet. We got great seats at the bar and the bartenders were all pretty cool with a fun vibe. I ordered the special drink and my husband sampled his favorite bourbons that were surprisingly nicely priced. Highly recommend this awesome place!
google avatar

Caitlin K.

Yelp
This small cocktail bar was hidden on the second floor of an office downtown! Definitely had a cool, retro vibe. There is a narrow staircase which makes exit/entrance a bit more difficult. Unfortunately they do not sell food, but the drinks are strong and made to order. We went with a larger group on a Saturday night so it took about 20 minutes to get a drink.
google avatar

Zara T.

Yelp
The atmosphere here is impeccable. Super quirky, the front looks like an office space and is very easy to miss. Not handicap accessible... better be ready to climb some stairs! But it truly feels like you're stepping into another world - I love a good speakeasy - with the low lights and long bar. There's a little outdoor balcony, too. Great drinks, cool bar tenders, very knowledgeable, good vibes all around

Yelp
I've always liked this joint since Oxheart was around. It's quite interesting the place doesn't have a signage like it's neighbours and yet they've more clienteles than their neighbours. They've good cocktails. I think they're one of the few joints downtown that serves a good Old Fashioned (most places serves them overly sweet). You should try doing an Old Fashioned downtown pub crawl with yout best mates and see which ones serve the best. Service wise, they do get busy on Fridays and Saturdays. If you want the best service, Thursday is a good bet. The bartenders overall aren't entitled c*nts but at times they do get busy and you might not get a proper customer service. They don't have a large selections of craft beers but the ones they have are sufficient to quench your beer taste. The 80s music isn't bad either. It's worth a visit after an Astros game but maybe a sh*te when they get really busy on Fridays and Saturdays. Cheers!

Stephani N.

Yelp
Excellent space!! Awesome drinks, ambience, and staff. I will definitely be back and bring some friends!
google avatar

Yelp
Why aren't all bars this cool?! This speakeasy type bar is the perfect hidden gem in Downtown Houston. Bring a friend or a date, and enjoy high quality cocktails, and a killer view of the downtown nightlife. Hidden behind a "law office" door and a mysterious dark walk up some stairs, you're then suddenly welcomed by their well stocked bar and multiple bartenders slinging out some craft cocktails. We didn't stay here super long because we wanted to bar hop all over Main St, but the drinks we did have here were outstanding. We tried their Yaoi Paddle, Jade Palace, and A King's Ransom. Every drink here is super unique, and I honestly just recommend trying it all if you can. I like that they put the initials of the bartender who created the drink on the menu as well, its cool seeing their different drink styles. I will definitely come back again soon during happy hour! Cheers!

Yelp
Christine was the sweetest bartender I've had and cares about her craft. Quick and attentive. Nothing but praise for this babe.
google avatar

Craig G.

Yelp
This is an offbeat location with business type patrons. Love the ambiance and the exterior patio area that looks down Main Street. The bartenders remember you as well as your drink!
google avatar

Carl G.

Yelp
It's worth coming here for one drink just for the novelty of a "hidden" speakeasy, but it gets old quick. The space has horrible acoustics, and even half-full makes it impossible to carry a converstion inside. For a place that doesn't serve food, the service was horribly slow , with the bartenders measuring out every pour. I ordered a scotch neat to save time with many people waiting forever for basic cocktails (again, with half the bar empty), and watched with pained agony as the bartender walked down the bar to look for a jigger because he couldn't manage a 3 oz pour without it. Outside of the shtick, this bar lives up to its name as bad news for anyone looking to enjoy a few drinks downtown.
google avatar

Dan K.

Yelp
To be honest, this isn't really my thing. Anything I know about high spirits is from my buddy, a true scotch aficionado. But he wasn't here in person but I'm pretty sure he would approve. There's the speakeasy style entrance (all they needed was a door man to demand a password) with a stinky, musty smell perhaps to dissuade all but the most determined (or thirsty). You open the door to reveal a dark room with a long wall of various beauty-lit bottles and colors. The seating is an eclectic mix of church pews and Victorian chaises. It was a wild night full of lightning so the place was perfect to hang with friends and enjoy the light show. My quick test for a bar is its ice. You get a proper cube that is big and clear - good sign of what's to come. I got the 'gift of strength' which was just excellent. You could smell the Apple Brandy wafting is way out of the glass. The bourbon was super smooth. And it wasn't overly sweet. It was kind of self service that night so can't really slam that element of the place. Definitely coming back here!

Yelp
Went in here yesterday around 7pm. Bar wasn't busy at all. The bartender made a rude remark when our party sat down at the bar. He walked off, served 2 new guests that sat down at the bar after us. After being ignored for 12 minutes we just got up and left.
google avatar

Marissa S.

Yelp
Great cocktails and fun hidden spot. Made it for happy hour which had really great deals - 5$ old fashioned and other staples
google avatar

Yelp
Was one of my favorite places until..... I was recently diagnosed with epilepsy and asked owner/manager whatever he was refused my service animal water. What a bitch. Guess he'd much rather have EMS called for an epileptic injury as opposed to providing a service animal tap water. Goop job d*#k! I'll make sure it's on every social media platform I can find.

Amy B.

Yelp
Great drinks and great atmosphere. Trust the bartender recommendations. Watch out for the stairs when you leave!

Yelp
What a fantastic little bar! My husband and I found it and had the best time, with great cocktails and bartenders were super nice!

Yelp
Just found this tucked away gem! Chill Vibes! Good Drinks! Fast bartenders! Sweet prices! Great spot to meet up with friends! I stopped by on a Saturday night' and looking forward to going back to check out Friday's!

Yelp
Beware of fraud! Ordered two drinks at $12 each & I forgot to close the tab.. expected to pay 20% for not closing the tab but they ended up charging me $65 for the two drinks..... since they don't have a phone number to call I am assuming this is fraud and have filed a dispute with my bank good drinks but not worth $65
google avatar

Yelp
Just a great way to decompress after a long day. As James T.'s review states: Relaxed and deceptively hidden within the confines of a law office, Captain Foxheart's Bad News Bar & Spirit Lodge provides a second level patio that oversees the train and life of the city below. We were lucky enough to have Alphonso on the bar, ensuring our happy hour libations were freshly made and to our satisfaction. I can't remember a smoother Old Fashioned for an honest $5. If you can locate this place, you will not be disappointed with the venue, the quality of service or the view.
google avatar

Graham G.

Yelp
The best custom cocktail experience ever. Clean and covert. You come here for a drink you've never had.
google avatar

Bridget R.

Yelp
Great hidden joint! I was told how to find it and still had issues. Steps to get up are not lit, so a little precarious for a klutz like me. The staff was super friendly and not pretentious hipsters like some mixologist bars. Would HIGHLY recommend the watermelon drink but ask them to make it spicy. Great balcony seating and people watching to the train stop.
google avatar

Sandra M.

Yelp
I wasn't expecting much from this speakeasy and I was pleasantly surprised by how great the drinks were. A "secret" bar whose entrance is a nondescript door advertising an attorney's office. Walk through the glass doors and head up the stairs to the second floor where you'll find a closed door to the left knock three times and say your name. Just kidding. Just open the door and you've arrived! Inside you'll find a dimly lit, long bar. Have a seat there or in one of the comfy chairs throughout the bar or if you want to brave the heat you can sit outside on the patio overlooking Main St. We were greeted right away and provided menus. My boyfriend opted for the daily special on the board - Russell's In Arms - a bright and refreshing bourbon drink with orgeat and angostura bitters (which gave it a nice "island-y" punch). I drank half his drink before my drink - Ripe With Irony - arrived. Ripe is a rum based, fruit forward drink - when I say fruit forward I mean there was no doubt there was tons of cantaloupe in this drink. It was delicious and I sucked it down in minutes, it literally tastes like cantaloupe aquas frescas. I didn't get any of the grapefruit flavor but it was still good. I tried the Nilsson Paradox next ("put the lime in the coconut and shake it all up" Nilsson) which was a rum drink with banana, lime, orgeat, and coconut. Another delicious concoction that I sucked down right away. At this point we'd only been there 10 minutes and I'd downed two drinks already so it was time for us to move on to our concert that was going to start soon otherwise I'd gone through half the menu in an hour. I definitely plan to come back the next time I'm in Houston - this was such a delightful surprise. We came early in the day (around 7pm) which is the ideal time, from what I heard the bar gets crazy busy and super packed later in the evening. So plan your visit wisely! The prices are decent and they offer a happy hour for those who are budget conscious. There is limited to no street parking nearby so plan to uber or walk to get here. Bad News is located in the row of bars along Main street so you can bar hop to several destinations while in this area. Now go and get your drink on.
google avatar

Alexandra M.

Yelp
pre covid review: Don't be fooled by the law office door! We came here to end a cocktail night out and it was the perfect ending. The bartender was attentive and quick, bringing me my new drink just in time after I finished the first one. The menu is really fun too.
google avatar

Lindsey R.

Yelp
Such a cool place! Told the bartender what I liked and didn't like and got the most amazing drink! I think he said it was a watermelon martini but it had an amazing mint flavor with the watermelon.
google avatar

Yelp
This by far tops the hidden gems of all hidden gems in Houston. This location literally blends in with Downtown Houston, you would have to be on your P's & Q's to find this cocktail lounge at night. This is a 3 story townhome turned into a cocktail lounge with a rooftop to enjoy the beautiful view of Downtown with a glass of your choice. My date decided to take me off of my champagne diet and wanted me to try a rare drink that only a few bars can make in the city of Houston: The Negroni. The drink had a strong, bitter, yet sweet taste to it. The bartender was surprised that I asked for another glass, apparently it's not a drink the many will ask for a second round. My date & I decided to step onto the rooftop patio to enjoy Downtown Houston at night, the view was amazing, drinks were amazing, and the vibe was amazing. Will definitely be back soon! XONO

Yelp
Christine and staff are amazing and always deliver a fantastic time. We have frequented this place for years but had a several month hiatus during COVID. Like seeing old friends again they never missed a beat.
