I’ve been to Nightshade twice in the past few weeks. The food is completely plant based but you’d never know it. The mushroom risotto is outstanding! So creamy with a lovely mushroom flavour. All the food is fantastic. Also loved the Tempura Crunch Sushi Roll, and seasonal veggies as sides. Yesterday I tried the Mee Kola Noodle Bowl for lunch and it was delicious! If you’ve never tried higher end plant based food, this place is a must.

We've been here a few times and have never been disappointed! Everything is seriously good, very well balanced and developed flavours. So we tried their tasting menu for our anniversary (as well as brunch earlier in the day) and as ever, everything was fantastic! We were even made a off-menu custom cocktail and it was the best iteration of a whiskey sour I have been blessed with. If I had any critique at all, the portions for the tasting menu were a bit large but it was all so good that it's hardly a complaint.

This was a great space that shone with pride in their mission and values. The ambience and the service were incredible and the energy in the restaurant was uplifting. The ceramics were exquisite and unique and the folks working there seemed like they really enjoyed serving the community. Now onto the food. The food was magical. I specially liked the jerked mushroom- it was really well made and the flavor and textures were “chef’s kiss” 😘. The dessert was my ultimate favorite dessert I have had for a while. I loved that they use seasonal ans sustainable produce to design their menu. The dessert I wanted a second one. I am going back for that one. My husband liked his unique Lion’s Mane dish which was different than anything we have had before. I think I need more time to acquire that flavor. Join me in celebrating plant based missions and visit this fine experience. Prices seemed reasonable and we left happy, full, and full of energy for the rest of the evening.

Wow that’s a gem in yaletown. After going to a different vegan restaurant for months (vegan good fast food) we were super happy that we randomly found nightshade. The afternoon host/server was great and super kind. The prices are absolutely fair, I would even say almost cheap, for that value. Positive surprised. We ended up ordering 6 drinks, 3 appetizer, 2 mains and 1 dessert. We told so many friends already to go there because we loved it.

Google
We went there twice - for dinner and brunch. We enjoyed both times. The food is delicious. Lots of thoughts were put into every dish. Complex flavours and textures. The gyoza is highly recommended. For brunch - the corn waffle with oyster mushrooms is recommended. At brunch, we were a bit disappointed by the big chocolate cookie that was a bit dry and way too sweet. Fantastic restaurant.

Google
We had a lovely time at Nightshade and will definitely be returning. It's vegan, tapa style dining. We had 5 dishes for 3 people and that felt like enough. Everything was yummy, especially loved the dumplings. The cocktails were delicious too! The Henny martini was great.

Google
An exceptional experience. I’m not a vegetarian but my wife is 100%. We were on our way to an event and we walked by. We were inspired by the menu and stopped in. The service was great, the food was phenomenal and as a non-meat eater, this restaurant delivers the goods. We’ll certainly be back often. Great job!

Google
This is definitely a little finer than your average vegan spot, however, once you go inside, you’ll realize it’s relatively casual like the rest of Vancouver! I had a great experience here. I was impressed by how many different cuisines they served (we had Japanese, Indian, Vietnamese and Italian influenced dishes), and how all were done well. I’d say the three things you must try is their sushi rolls, the nightshade once was really good. Taro roll is essentially a spring roll. It come out nice and hot, and I thought eating it with lettuce and mint leaves was a great touch, so it didn’t feel too oily and had a great crunch. The truffle gnocchi was also good. The mushroom gravy was thick and flavourful, chunks of mushroom gave it meatiness and it’s a good size. I will say I wished there was more of a truffle flavour, but it was still good. The other dishes we ordered were good as well, just not a highlight I’d say. The food looked good as you can tell and the service was great as well. I felt it was more of a family place than date night, but it also depends on what time of day you come. I will say this is one of the better vegan restaurants in Vancouver and I’d recommend trying this place out to everyone! It’s a good way to see what vegan food can actually be like! I will say it’s not one of the cheaper vegan eats though, it cost us around $50 per person, but I think it was worth it.

Yelp
Vegan restaurant that does great Asian food, BUT not only do they have great food, they have an amazing cocktail program! We loved their cocktails so much we came 2 days in a row on our trip in Vacouver ---henney martini: the best espresso martini we've had!! All other cocktails were also good, our friends Eben enjoyed the non-alcoholic drinks --banh xeo: couldn't believe they made the dipping sauce vegan!! Amazing. All the other dishes had great flavors and didn't feel too heavy Cute outside patio and inside decor, highly recommend!

Yelp
My partner and I came here our first night in Vancouver and it did not disappoint on any front. We had an indoor reservation but were fortunately seated outside, which was lovely on a warm Vancouver day. The music was non-obtrusive (and actual real songs, which was appreciated) and the server was attentive and helpful. But on to the food! Everything on the menu sounded great and since the dishes are more tapas style you can try a lot (especially with two people.) We got the empanada, crunch rolls, caesar salad, and pesto croquettes. The flavour profiles in everything were truly excellent and it really made you want to savour every bite. I thought the portions were actually pretty good as well (again, given that we ordered a few things) but would have liked to have had two empanadas instead of one and a fourth croquette so we could more easily share. All in all, we would absolutely come here again next time we're in Vancouver. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a more elevated vegan/plant-based experience.

Yelp
Super nice server. Very attentive. The risotto was creamy and delicious. Would get it again. The sausage, a bit clunky. I would probably try the pasta next. Great cocktails. Very clean and spacious. Would recommend

Yelp
Let me start with the positive: it's beautiful, in a nice area, pretty spacious. The outdoor dining area is nice. The service was terrific. The drinks were very good. And that's the end of good. We made a reservation, and it was a beautiful evening and asked to sit outside. The hostess told us that we can't sit outside as they had reservations for the outside area. We SPECIFICALLY asked for outside because it was VERY warm inside. Uncomfortable. So we took it in stride as it was our anniversary and we wanted to enjoy it fully!!! Now I had a tank top on, and layered a sweater. Thank goodness. I peeled that sweater off fast. It was hot. Our server is pretty much the 5 star experience here. Food was 2, atmosphere 2. The heat deduction was 2, and the food deduction also a 2. I felt that with the service and drinks it still deserved a 3 star. But the food was SO disappointing I had to give it a 2. Now Nightshade is a vegan tapas restaurant. Every dish is intended to be shared. You're paying main dish prices for appetizer sized portions. So order many, or you'll leave hungry. We started with the cheese plate. The "blue cheese" was amazing, very bold and flavorful and the best blue cheese I'd ever had since being vegan. The other two cheeses were meh. Hardly any flavor. But the mushroom pate was incredible. Very very good. The "wasa" like seed cracker was great with it. I did not however, understand why a papadom was used for the cheese plate. It was far too thin to really hold anything or dip... Next off the Kimbap. This was pretty good. But it came with a Gochujang mayo. Gochujang has bold delicious bright and acidic flavor. I cook with it and use it all the time at home. This barely had flavor. So disappointing. The sushi rolls themselves were good. Nothing special, nothing that said "wow." We then moved onto the Lions Mane dish. It had a "horseradish" sauce and claimed to have truffle. Mmmmm nope. It basically tasted like a mushroom. A greasy one at that. There was this super terrible broccoli floret base that the Lions Mane sat on and it was awful. Gritty. Blah. This dish fell ON it's face. Beautiful but tasteless. I was SO disappointed. Especially since you can do SO much with a Lions Mane and make truly "meaty" dishes. We finished with the delicata. Now I had hope for this since the dish had the blue cheese. Again just okay. Y'all for the prices it should be phenomenal. Not meh. I LOVE delicata squash. There was no salt. No seasoning. It was cooked fine but it was maybe 1/4 of a medium delicata stuffed with the cheese and something else with a weird texture. It was okay. Y'all I love food. I love plant based food. I was excited for plant based fine dining. I got something that resembled a vegan trying to make fine dining food who was more a visual artist than a chef. Pretty but no flavor. No texture. No salt, fat, acid or heat. Blah. Boring. Not worth the money. The cocktails were good. I had the Playa Paraiso and it was one of the most complex cocktails as far as ingredients, but truly delicious. My husband had the Dutchess and he really enjoyed that. I had a Mezcal Old Fashioned after and that was okay. Not great just fine. Side note-when we left there were PLENTY of outdoor tables unoccupied. Interesting. THAT said, I think what they're doing here is trying to complicate plant based food. Plants and herbs and spices have SO much flavor add seasoning is fun!! Building texture in a dish is fun. Finding flavors that compliment each other is exciting. But they just layered on nuts and seeds and pomegranate seeds and sauces that didn't make sense, and didn't improve the dishes. They made pretty but tasteless food. They fell flat on flavor. Truly disappointing. Just skip it and try something else. See my other Vancity reviews to find that special spot...

Yelp
Absolutely my new favourite spot in Yaletown and vegan place in the city! Been here twice and blown away both times. I had their oyster mushroom karage and blue corn waffle OMG get this. I'd eat a whole plate of the mushrooms all day long. Nomnom! I loved this so much I came back shortly after just to eat this dish. My sister had the vegan carbonara which was really great too. They have really good variety of options for brunch. I'd love to try their dinner one day. F Given it's in the heart of Yaletown (they took over for Wildtale) their prices are reasonable for Vancouver prime time brunch spots Highly recommend!

Yelp
With not so many nice places for vegan food, coming here should have been a lot more exciting. But unfortunately the food is not excellent. I enjoyed the small plates here better than the actual meal. The costly foccacia bread is what really turned me off about this place. Would I be back for small plates ..yes. but as for the service and actual meals I would pass. There are much better places with better meals and service than here . My opinion. I'm a great cook and eating here makes me enjoy cooking at home even more

Yelp
Vegan fine-dining, done very well. For a special occasion, we made a 6:30pm reservation on a Wednesday--by 7:30, the place was packed, so definitely worth reserving a spot here. The interior is beautifully designed, with an upper-back section that is really comfy. Their menu is extremely creative, but it's one of those menus where the descriptions are so unusual that you don't really know what you're going to get. So, between the four of us, we shared four appetizers, and each ordered a different entrée. We also ordered cocktails and were all really happy with those. Appetizers: -Crispy cassava ($14) - I don't think I'd ever had cassava before; it has a texture similar to taro, very starchy. The red pepper aioli made this appy delicious. 4.5/5 -Cauliflower pakora ($15) - deliciously done. The cauliflower was cooked perfectly, accompanied with some Blue Heron "cheese", chickpeas, and drizzled with a cheesy sauce and some chutney. This was great. 5/5 -Jicama ceviche ($17) - quite lime and ginger-forward, with nicely crunchy jicama and crunchy lotus chips on top. This was creative and tasty, but my least favourite of the appies we had. 4/5 -Sprout salad ($17) - my favourite of the appies, surprisingly; what made this so interesting was the hazelnut butter - man that was nice. The sprouted lentils and toasted quinoa also added some wonderful texture to this. Awesome stuff. 5/5 Entrée: -Agnolotti ($28) - this was nicely done. Cheesy, tomato-ey, somewhat spicy, with pleasant textures. Honestly though, this did not blow me away, and from my small tastes of what others ordered, I preferred theirs (though the mushrooms on toast was very salty). 3.5/5 Dessert: -Half-baked brownie ($16) - wonderfully done, creamy chocolate, with some crunch from the parsnip chips, and a really nice tonka/hazelnut ice cream. I'm not a huge chocolate person, but this was impressive. -Rosewater apple tart ($14) - pleasant apple tart, with a nice milk foam centre and solid crust. This didn't blow me away though and didn't seem all that special. 3.5/5 The service was excellent, and for a fine dining restaurant, the food came out very fast. I'll definitely return for another special occasion, and would definitely recommend the place.

Yelp
Not to be missed. Bursting with mouthwatering ingenuity, artistry, and decadence. Generous portions. Gracious and efficient waitstaff. Make sure to get the chocolate and cherries dessert..yum!

Yelp
WOW! Amazing spot in VC for vegan food. Everything we had was delicious. It's tapas style and for 3 people we got 2 small plates, 2 mains, and a dessert. So worth every penny. It's not possible to order something that's not an outstanding combination of flavors with beautiful presentation. Everything was unique and has left a lasting impression on us! The service is awesome and the atmosphere is great too :) Definitely recommend!

Yelp
It was perfect from Beginning and until Departure!!! We were welcomed by the lovely and courteous Melissa.Sat at the Bar upon waiting for our table, drinks prepared by the Fantastic Mixologist. We enjoyed the Set Menu's for Dine Out Vancouver. The presentation and taste of the food was Superb!!

Yelp
Came here with a group of friends with reservations (highly recommend you make resos). Creative vegan dishes that pack a lot of flavour and were beautifully presented. It seems like the menu has significantly changed since we were here last month. Equally creative were the cocktails and mocktails. Service was a little slow as we had to request a lot of things (utensils, water, drinks, etc.)

Yelp
I was excited to try a new vegetarian place in town as I always go to Meet when I am there. I saw that they were closed on Monday and Tuesday so I ventured down on Wednesday for dinner. Everything was dark and packed up. This place is closed for good.

Yelp
I was able to try all of nightshade menu from top to bottom and everything was very phenomenal. Nightshade is named michelin bib this year because of being michelin level but affordable at the same time. Nigthshade is a small plate vegan restaurant in Vancouver that has a lot of potential to be better. As a food reviewer and critic myself, i can see nigthshade can be better with it being very innovative with lots of lots of ingredients to combine for and everything works very well. Nonetheless, nightshade has a lot of learning to do next year to reach higher michelin achievement. With the similar base for its dishes, i would think that nigthshade has a lot of learning to do to mix and match the best base to mix to make more innovative dishes. Overall, it was very exceptional from top to bottom and to the dessert as well. Everything would make your mouth to feel the feeling of subliminal. Recommended. Cheers!
google avatar

Suzan L.

Yelp
Overall, I was absolutely blown away by the quality of the food, the beautiful atmosphere, and the stellar service of Nightshade. The carbonara pasta was by far the best pasta dish I have ever had in any restaurant. I could have probably eaten another serving, that's how good it was! I also had a few bites of my friend's mushroom toast, which was also divine. No words for how much I enjoyed the dining experience. Next time, I will be back for the dinner menu - that's something I don't want to miss!

Yelp
Went here for a fundraiser dinner for Rainbow Refugee and we had a 4 course meal that was delightful. The French Spouse is a pescatarian and former vegetarian who loves cheese and dairy. She did not miss the dairy or cheese one bit including the raviolo. The dishes we had were quite approachable with a pumpkin soup, a raviolo and delicious apps. It's refined but approachable vegan food that will please most meat eaters. The stand outs for us was one the apps that was a play on a tuna tartare but with beets instead. It was the perfect bite and a nice balance of flavour and texture. But what really stood out was the dessert which was billed as a cheesecake but was most like a crema catalana in the best possible way. The "banana brulee" on top was an interesting confection of a gelee with a beautiful smokyness. Look forward to coming back and trying the rest of the menu.

Yelp
I came here for weekend brunch after hearing this restaurant was listed as one of the best vegetarian restaurants in Vancouver magazine. I got the fried mushrooms and waffles (which was like their take on chicken and waffles) and it was really good! If you're not vegetarian, you'll probably wish it was chicken but if you are vegetarian/plant-based, you'll definitely enjoy this. The popcorn "butter" (or something like that) was really interesting. My partner got the katsu curry and I was jealous-- it was delicious and better than the waffles. The sauce was amazing. Servers were nice enough and didn't check in too often. The decor was modern and quite nice!
google avatar

Helena J.

Yelp
OMG this place is incredible. I can't say enough great things. The tartare is PHENOMENAL! The service is great and the food is beautiful, delicious and clean. You feel satisfied after you leave but not heavy. I highly recommend Nightshade!
google avatar

Elena A.

Yelp
What a vegan treat. The quality of food here is exceptional. The atmosphere and service is great. We not only had appetizers, mains and desserts we also enjoyed their cocktails which were amazing! Absolutely recommend their sushi you will never go wrong! I mean look at these dishes!

Gabe L.

Yelp
Wanted to try these guys out for a while, definitely a good addition to the vegan options. Cocktails were on point. Starters were excellent, jicama ceviche, 5 spice beet carpaccio, Fire Roll sushi all 5 stars on flavour and presentation. Two entrees, cardamom curry and agnolotti. Curry was bland, needed basic seasoning and reminded me of an airline meal, (really surprising b/c everything else was on point!) the agnolotti was excellent. Service mid-road but friendly. Will be back!
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Excellent experience overall - the food is toe-curlingly good and the customer service top notch. The ambiance was both modern and invitingly cozy and the music was upbeat and just the right volume to be able to have a conversation easily while enjoying the music. I will definitely come back - more than a few times.

Shannon W.

Yelp
Wanted to love it but instead completely disappointed. Our server was outright rude and the service was terrible. One persons entree was brought out once everyone else was finished eating. No one cleared our plates, no one asked if we needed another drink. Food was mediocre, looked better than it tasted and thats coming from a vegan.
google avatar

Corey M.

Yelp
The world needs more vegan fine dining restaurants, so I'm glad that there's more restaurants like these filling the void.

Megan R.

Yelp
My friend and I had an amazing meal at Nightshade! She has been a vegan her whole life, and she had never experienced a vegan restaurant whose food was not only delicious, but visually stunning as well! From the drinks, to the 4 dishes and 2 desserts we split, we were NOT disappointed! We started with the pesto croquettes, which were perfectly crisp on the outside and creamy on the inside. We then had the "scallops," which were made from mushroom stalks. Our 3rd dish was the rotollo, which was a ring of pasta filled with luscious whipped potatoes and cheese, topped with stewed tomatoes, which added a light acidity. Our 4th dish was a turmeric spiced crepe filled with smoked tofu, paired with greens with an Asian-type chili sauce. Dessert was a chocolate crème brûlée and a rhubarb tres leches cake with a fragrant elderflower sorbet. Every dish had a fantastic balance of flavors and variety of textures. I wish I lived in Vancouver so I could be a regular at this place! I am happy for my friend that she can be! Also, the wait staff was extremely friendly and excited to talk about the food.

Yelp
What a find! Was looking for a quick bite and the end of table service. They were so accommodating and friendly. Service great. Food great. Drinks great. Dessert great. Wouldn't even know everything was vegan. Had the cassava gnudi Pumpkin spice brûlée and duchess of wales. It's more of a casual fine dining but definitely worth a drop in.

Barbara F.

Yelp
Great spot in Yaletown that we happened upon without advance plans on a busy Friday night. Food was great - tasty and creative! Great presentation on food and drinks! Craving it already!

Laura S.

Yelp
What a delectable surprise and a most delightful experience. Everything we ordered was delicious and fresh and unusual. We are from Los Angeles visiting and while there are many vegan restaurants in Hollywood, there is not any one restaurant as tasty and exceptional as Nightshade. Service by Payton was outstanding and we recommend highly.
google avatar

Tony L.

Yelp
Went with a bunch of friends to Happy Hour at Nightshade. I was really hungry. The menu was very limited. I ordered the five spiced beets salad but they don't have it. That was the only thing I wanted on the menu. So I settled for edamame which cost $10 and mojito $13. The bill came to $30.96 and the 20% gratuity was added automatically because we had more than 6 people. If you want come for drinks that's fine but I wouldn't come back here for happy hour. There's was no protein dishes just cauliflowers, edamame and blue cheese platter. Very disappointed. I even asked if I can order off the dinner menu. They said no. Not until 5:00 pm. After we finished here, we went somewhere else for sushi and had a bento box for $16.95. I was full and my bill was only $17.80. Way better than what you get at the NightShade.

Mika C.

Yelp
Delicious and creative food and drinks! Slightly pricey but expected for yaletown (: will definitely be back!

Yelp
Truly amazing food! If you are looking for a beautiful restaurant to enjoy a fine dining experience and a great selection of vegan options, look no further. On the pricey side but worth it!
