Salmon Roe Is the Perfect Ingredient For This Moment

"Known for the practice of finishing bowls by pouring hot broth over the remaining rice and toppings to create a porridge-like ochazuke, with ikura left bobbing in the warmed mixture." - Tammie Teclemariam

15+ Incredible Places to Eat in Tokyo in 2025

"Seafood rice bowls (kaisen donburi) are the specialty, with fish coming directly from Tsukiji; although you’ll likely wait in line, it’s worth it to sit at the counter and watch the chef prepare your food right in front of you — remember to bring cash as cards are not accepted." - Matthew Kepnes

Things I want to try in Tokyo

The food was delicious! Fresh seafood on a bed of well seasoned japanese rice and a side of sashimi with what seemed like a sesame based sauce—amazing 🥹 then the broth added when 1/3 of the food is left was light but still packed a lot of seafood-y flavor. The atmosphere inside was also very warm and cozy. The seating area wraps around the prep area and you can see them prepare most of the food. Waited about an hour to be seated on a weekday afternoon, around 4PM. Best to come not on an empty stomach haha. Didn’t mind that much since it was our last full day in Tokyo, so why not.

This is my second visit to Roppongi Menya Musashi Kosho, and it remains my absolute favourite tsukemen restaurant. The texture of the noodles is outstanding — thick, perfectly chewy, and incredibly satisfying. The tsukemen here has a depth of flavour and balance that is hard to beat. I highly recommend ordering the extra bamboo shoots, as they add great texture and enhance the overall experience. One of the best highlights is that you can choose almost any amount of noodles without additional cost — even very large portions only require a small extra fee, which makes it great value for serious noodle lovers. The quality, consistency, and unique noodle texture make this place truly special. If you are a tsukemen fan, this is a must-visit spot in Tokyo, and easily my top choice.

We’d walked past Tsujihan over the weekend and always saw a massive line, but came back on a weekday for lunch and got seated surprisingly quickly which was well worth it. We ordered the Matsu course with extra crab and uni, and just when I thought the flavors couldn’t get any better, they did with the sea bream broth pour-over. The Japanese omelette was really solid too. Incredible quality for the price. Would definitely come back!

The queue at Tsujihan was insane, nearly 2 hours! 🤯 It’s super compact inside, which explains the long wait. The chirashi bowl made it all worth it, especially when you can add more rice and warm dashi broth halfway through. So comforting! 🍲 🎏

Randomly went for a walk from my hotel and chanced upon Zeitaku Don and it was such a beautiful dinner experience. I had the Ume Course along with a Ice Oolong Tea (they do already serve hot tea as well). The dish came with a mountain of fresh salmon roe, tuna and nakochi and felt really luxurious. It was a bit dry but the special thing about this restaurant is how you can request for broth to be added into your meal, and this made the biggest difference to the overall dish. There is quite a wait as the restaurant seats 12 but it's a great place for solo travellers and even if you can't speak Japanese as they have an English menu. Do note that they only accept cash.

Serving style is unique and delicious but not mind-blowing. 25 people queue took about 1 hour wait. The restaurant only seats 12 but serves quickly and turnover is fast. They take orders while you wait in line. There are 2 ways of eating: the rice bowl as is, and then add soup to it when you're almost done. I have been twice and prefer the original both times (no soup). Free rice refill.

We went on tuesday afternoon and had to wait around 50 mins. The rice bowl is quite good with generous amount of fish, roe and uni, but what better is that dashi soup they put on the rice bowl. It really make this dish a lot better.

This place was absolutely amazing. We had to wait around 20 or 30 minutes but it was worth it. The menu is pretty much limited to the donburi (with a couple "upgrade" options) and a few sides and drinks you can order. The amount and variety of seafood in the bowl is huge, and the flavoring of everything is light and delicious. I got the basic option which is just missing a few fancy things like sea urchin but it was still amazing and also quite affordable. Part way through you can have broth added and it practically becomes a whole other dish. All seating is essentially bar seating so be aware. They also only take cash. 10/10, would recommend.
