Where to Shop for Specialty Groceries in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Don’t let the diverse selection of Pocky in the sweets aisle dissuade you from the Japanese delicacies sold at this specialized supermarket. I absolutely love 💕 this market! My husband and I love coming here to get groceries or anything from the bakery. Everything is delicious 😋 customer service is amazing! 🔥 Place is well cleaned very welcoming never had a bad experience 😉 Keeps good memories of when my grandmother would take me when I was a kid. R.I.P how much I miss her! She was Japanese lived in Kobe so she got me into my Japanese roots when I was really young, very thankful for this market still being around good memories and good times🙏 Beautiful Valentine's cake I got for my mom all their cakes are beautiful ❤️ They have mother day cakes now must see 😍 Also kinda sad when people talk about the prices being more expensive than Mitsuwa when I've gone to both and I can say for a fact Mitsuwa is way more expensive. It's laughable that you'll rate a store low due to prices when no one is forcing you to shop there 🙄👌 Simple if you don't have enough money than don't go shopping to places you can't afford. I find it disrespectful how many people review a place due to prices as if they're unaware how everything is expensive nowadays. Doesn't matter where you go honey! No money 🤑💰 than that's a YOU problem not the stores! Lmao 😉

My favorite Japanese market! They always have fresh, high-quality products—perfect for cooking delicious meals at home for my loved ones

I love this Nijiya supermarket. Super polite/kind staff. The store is always so clean and well organized. The produce are usually the highest quality. Try their eggs! The egg yolk is orange and very delicious! 2025- High quality produce, clean store, delicious bento and sushi! Thank you for your service!

Google
Excellent pre-packaged sushi at reasonable prices. Be warned, however, that this store does NOT have non-Japanese items. I remember going in to try and buy baby wipes, but they don't sell any. I compared the pre-packaged sushi to the one in H-Mart, and it's not even a competition. Nijiya all the way. They don't accept EBT.

Google
Love this market! Their desserts taste great and are super affordable. Sometimes they even go on sale. I’m also a big fan of their snacks.

Google
Little gem in the heart of Kearney Mesa. Their sushi and bento selections are some of the best and freshest around. I honestly think the selection is way better than Mitsuwa when it comes to fresh seafood. They have an ample selection of drinks and snacks and they have amazing produce year-long.

Google
Fantastic selection of fresh fish and also packaged sushi/sashimi/bento offerings. Highlight was the fantastic attitude of clerk Sawako: Truly a Japanese Princess!!

Ernesto Spanky Castañeda III

Google
A bit expensive compared to other Japanese markets but not by much. Love the variety of the products you normally don't find being imported to the U.S. They alao have a wide selection of pre made sushi. Overall a good market if your looking for a wide variety of Japanese products.

Yelp
What an amazing find!! Where have I been. Wow, this is a fun store and their prices are way better than other similar markets. Amazing selection of sushi and fish, sauces, condiments, sake and more!! Everyone who works here is so sweet and helpful. Even the people shopping here are fun to interact with [once you break through the social barrier]. I like to pick up a few specialty items, such as Uni sauce and top shelf filtered sakes. I am a total fan!!! They sell REAL wasabi root !!! Woo Hooooo ; ] Cheers.....I'll be back when the next sushi / sashimi cravings overcome me. Wait, feelin' it now! Pro-tip: this store is very busy on the weekends and parking is a PITA. =: D

Yelp
I love this store. It's small but it's packed with great authentic Japanese food. I absolutely love their bakery. This chocolate cake parfait was the best of all grocery store bakery cake parfait I've tasted. Even though it may look very light and not too deeply chocolate, it was actually very rich and chocolatey! I could tell the cream has actual chocolate in it, like ganache. And it's so inexpensive! I also love their cream puffs that is called double choux. I can't get enough of them. I also tried many sandwich breads and rolls and they were all delicious. My fam absolutely adore them. Every time I am here, I also get sashimi and fish- it's so authentic. I wish I lived closer!

Yelp
Hands down, the best Japanese market I've been to. In fact, I'm so upset I don't live near this spot! I'd be constantly going in there for my grocery shopping and pre-made food/bento boxes all of the time! But, let me just mention that the food prices are incredibly reasonable and the prepared foods section blew my mind. I had an entire bowl of rice & hamachi for $7! That can't be beat for sushi rolls and poke bowls. I loved the selection of drinks as well. Many delightful teas and coffees to pair with their baked goods too! This store is kept very clean and organized! The staff was efficient and very friendly. I will be back with every California visit from here on out!

Yelp
Love coming here for their organic fruits and veggies. The other Japanese supermarkets like Marukai and Mitsuwa either don't have organic fruits and veggies or are very limited me their produce is fresh and healthy and the store is always tidy. We swing by Nijiya typically after eating at the Korean or Japanese restaurants next door (highly recommended eats)
google avatar

Yelp
Nijiya Market has a plethora of fresh produce, price is on the high side but very fresh and well stocked. Great selection of delicious ramen, white bread and pastries. This market has the best sushi, sashimi and pre-cooked Togo in all of San Diego! I was surprised to find a great selection of Japanese facial cleaners that are great for sensitive the skin types. Cashiers were friendly and assisted in bagging my small groceries. The market is very clean and tidy.

Yelp
Close to the hotel and I wanted something to take back that would be fast and I know they usually have bentos. Since it was later (after 5:00pm) the selection was too good but there was enough that I could find something that I wanted to eat. I went with a rice box, negitoro roll, and a musubi, yeah, a lot of rice. I also got some desserts. Since most of the items are refrigerated they were a bit cold but really tasty. It was nice and convenient to get something quick and ready to eat.

Yelp
I love this little market so much. I've grown up going here to get the bentos, bowls and nigiris and now that I work in the area, I frequent this store a lot more. I personally prefer this market over ones like Mitsuwa, it feel more genuine to me. I enjoy being greeted the second I walk in by staff that I see everytime I go. The market is always kept clean and organized. I see staff constantly cleaning, organizing produce and products so nothing seems cluttered and constantly restocking merchandise. Their food is really reasonably priced and I can definitely say, you get what you pay for, if not more in all honesty. A couple of our favorites is the beef gyudon bowl, the oyako dons, the curry and all the onigiris. Also, their sashimi tastes really fresh. I've seen stores where if you're even just looking at the sashimi, you can instantly tell that its not fresh. They also carry a great amount of Asian Snacks at reasonable prices. you can find things such as pocky all the way to different flavored cup noodles. I highly suggest people should check out this market for groceries or meals! You'll definitely get your money worth. PS. Please be understanding of parking. Parking in Convoy isn't great to begin with, but people get upset about the parking in the center. It isn't Nijiya's fault. They share the center with about 10 other businesses so please be patient with them as they can't help it!

Yelp
10/28/23 - I went in here at 11:30am. The parking was terrible. A large parking lot and full of cars and tiny parking spots. Any large cars or trucks, expect car dings and watching careless drivers in the lot. Best hidden spot for authentic Japan cream puffs. A friend who lived in Japan found it. These cream puffs taste just like they would in Japan he told me. Look at my tip for this location. I shouldn't share this Tip!! But I will. I agree, best cream puffs I've had. The bomb!!!!! One item cost $1.99. 5 stars for ultimate creep puff Japan goodness.

Yelp
Nijiya is the perfect spot to get your Japanese food fix. I usually come here for Japan-specific items, like matcha or sushi or bento boxes. They sell other produce and home goods here, but I have other go-to stores for that stuff. They have Hello Kitty-themed merch, like rice cookers and thermos bottles! The other day I was here, I saw some sushi bento boxes for 20% off. The cashier dude said they will post things on sale when they have too much stock. I think it's risky to purchase these items because the sashimi I got did not taste as fresh as they could be. They're only 5-10 minutes away from Marukai, so if this place fails, just go to Marukai or Tokyo Center.

Yelp
Love this market so much! It's our routine to come here every weekend for some grocery shopping and to pick up some of their delicious ready-made meals. They have a good selection of produce and snacks. Lines can get long but moves decently fast. The store is always neat and clean as well.

Yelp
I freaking love this market! I've been going at least once a week for a while now!!. They're located on the far south end of convoy in a small shopping center and sometimes parking can be a little tight but generally there's always place to park. The market is not too large, but they have everything you could possibly need. I really love the fresh food aisle where they have fresh sandwiches and desserts. Everything is super fresh. All of the fresh food items are clearly marked with a fresh new sticker and it's all the same day that it's prepared and they want it sold. I love the little tea sandwiches that they have. If you see some thing called a custard cake, I'm telling you you have to try it! It is the most delicious thing ever! Compared to some of the larger markets. Their prices are a little bit higher, but I think it's offset by the convenience of not having to go through a huge market. They have a very efficient system for the check out line....there is one place where everybody lines up and then they'll call you to their register as they become available. Compared to some of the larger markets. The vibe is a lot more relaxed here. It's easy to move around and to get in and out quickly.

Yelp
Great market for Japanese goods! A bit pricey if you know the going price in Japan, but you are saving the cost of airfare . Very similar to the other Asian markets in Southern California, but has its slight variations. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
My #1 favorite Japanese market for sushi quality fish and goodies from Japan. They have a whole section dedicated to fresh rolls, nigiris, and meals. My favorites are their handrolls and their hamachi bowls. Spent quite a bit here recently as I just got the cutest Hello Kitty bottle and lunch container to keep my foods hot. I bought two to receive a complimentary lunch tote bag. They do specials frequently and the line in the morning tends to get long. I like Nijiya because their items are always fresh and they stock early in the morning.
google avatar

Yelp
If you're looking for a delicious banana cake, look no further! Nijiya has a BOMB banana cake topped with fresh strawberries. The white cake and buttercream is delightfully light and not too sweet. This cake is a hit every time I buy one for a friend or family members birthday. This is a full blown grocery store too, lots of high quality meats and fish and delicious snacks!
google avatar

Yelp
I was told that there were some markets that would remind me of my time in Japan and this one certainly did. I snagged a few items and walked around the entire store to see all that they offered. Highly recommend and I will be back.

Yelp
It was just okay, way below my expectations compared to the one SF Japan town. Not many choices in selection
google avatar

Kachun L.

Yelp
This Japanese supermarket it's pretty good. We were able to get some really good and fresh fruit before it close. The staff there are very nice with smiles, and the environment is pretty quiet. They have wide variety of items, such as meat, drink, utensils, cooking ware, vegetables and fruit, snacks etc.
google avatar

Kristelle B.

Yelp
Nijiya is our absolute favorite Japanese grocery in San Diego. They easily beat the other two nearby. It's clean, have plenty of options, and very rarely overcrowded. We love getting their chicken karaage from the fresh food section as well as their melon pan and cream puffs from the pastries. Their sushi and other fresh food options are also really good!
google avatar

Cari A.

Yelp
Great Japanese Grocery Store. Lots of free parking is available. Pros: -fresh produce, kitchenware, and more! -friendly staff -ready to go meals Cons: -n/a Other: -you can get chopsticks once you pay at the register
google avatar

Hiroshi A.

Yelp
I like this place more than Mitsuwa. Has good selection of day to day grocery items without the hassle you experience at other places. In and out, get what you need and go. Fresh food, good service, and very clean! Nice staff as well!
google avatar

Yelp
I must say that Nijiya market is definitely the best authentic Japanese market in san diego! Some things are a bit pricey but you are paying for quality. The customer service is excellent. There is prepared sushi and bentos,of many different types. All very delicious! They have a huge snack selection. I was born in japan and lived there many years. I feel that this place reminds me of authentic Japanese markets! The parking can be very congested at times so I recommend going there early.
google avatar

Yelp
Of the 3 Japanese markets in the area, Nijiya is my go to. Their take out food is prepared on premise, and reminds me of a blend of home cooked family meals and a restaurant. The produce section has nice variety and often has items I can't find at the standard grocery / super markets. A majority of the staff is Japanese, or speaks Japanese and they're helpful and friendly. The meat options aren't as abundant, and slightly overpriced. Pantry items there's enough to choose from. Parking sucks, but most of Convoy area markets / strip malls have crappy parking. I usually find a spot big enough for me with no issue.
google avatar

Satoka B.

Yelp
Nijiya has excellent customer service and is always very clean. The store is very welcoming and always have fresh produce on hand. We love the bread selections and the Japanese drinks. I would highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Jessica X.

Yelp
It's a small market, definitely in the pricier side but it's solid nonetheless! I drop by to get their premade rice balls and sushi rolls
google avatar

Rebecca T.

Yelp
Not sure why I haven't been to Nijiya for so long... we were eating at Koon Thai and decided to go in as a quick stop to get rice and other stuff, but little did i know that I ended up with $100+ worth of groceries lol. Maybe that's why i stopped shopping here lol. All their produce and meats were nicely packaged and most of them looked fresh. The meats could be a little redder but I'm trying to cut down on red meats anyway. Their cakes from Cake Kobo were amazing. I bought a mocha 6" to try and holy cow it's the best supermarket cake my husband and I ever had! Honestly it's better than a lot of standalone bakeries out there! We can't wait to come back to try other flavors lol. Thank you Nijiya for carrying good quality groceries. See you soon!
google avatar

Kysa T.

Yelp
I always love coming to Nijiya for their selection of cold foods. It's perfect for lunch and there's so much to choose from. Just make sure to beat the lunch rush or some of the best selections will be gone! Especially the sushi and fish! My go to is the chirashi bowl. It's a hearty serving of assorted fish with cucumbers and egg on a bed of rice. I always love to grab a spicy salmon hand roll if available or another sushi roll, nigiri set, or musubi. They're all so good, it's hard not to buy everything. Especially when you know they run out quick. I recently tried their sandwich assortment and it's also very tasty! It doesn't look like much at first but each sandwich had the right amount of filling and it was not dry at all. The cashiers are always nice and will give you napkins and chopsticks with your purchase as well. I would definitely recommend trying some of the selections here for lunch or a quick snack. Everything is always fresh and there's also a great selection of Japanese snacks too!
google avatar

Verona M.

Yelp
I've been craving sushi, but I didn't want to spend an insane amount for high quality sushi. Nijiya has incredibly fresh sushi for a fraction of the cost & is incredibly delicious. I didn't expect to be wowed by a market bought sushi, but I was. We bought sides of uni, salmon roe, & tea to go with our chirashi bowls - a side of uni & ikura sushi to go with it as well. The market itself is relatively small & since COVID-19, there is a slight longer wait to get checked out from the lines. I would still prefer Nijiya to all the other Japanese markets for fresh sushi & the quality of their fresh fish, bento boxes, & precooked meals. Definitely recommend coming here!
google avatar

James V.

Yelp
Pricey but high quality goods, clean store, and excellent selection. Service has been friendly as well. Excellent option for Japanese groceries and treats in the area. Extensive options for meat, seafood, beverages and other ingredients. Love buying snacks here too.
google avatar

Alex H.

Yelp
Amazing bento boxes! Fresh onigiri and hand rolls! Fast service and large variety. Come here often!
google avatar

Joe T.

Yelp
Nice little Japanese market with a wide variety of hard to find items. They have a small section of Japanese beers I have not seen elsewhere. They have some Hello Kitty branded wines I discovered. Not sure if they are any good but they did make nice presents for some friends who are totally into that. The selection of pre made food options is nice. Place is working hard to make sure the customer experience is safe. They are limiting entry and cleaning baskets and carts after each use. Parking is not much of an issue right now with many of restaurants in the strip mall take out only. Parking used to be tight in the evening times when the restaurants were fully open. The parking spots are also kind of tight for larger cars.
google avatar

Yelp
Personal review and gratitude to the staff, I forgot my wallet in bathroom then left the other day, someone kindly found it and handed to the store. I assumed that my wallet would be missing forever if I drop it anywhere in the states, so I was really surprised. One of Japanese staff told me "its not uncommon people accidentally drop their wallet at the store, but 100% it'd returned to the owner." I just tremendously thank you for the staff and people who come here to shop with kindness and manner. I'd love to do grocery shopping when I came visit Sam Diego again.
google avatar

Juliette L.

Yelp
Cool Japanese market in KM. It's smaller than the other market nearby, but they have sushi, and other Japanese food items.
google avatar

Lulu C.

Yelp
Love Nijiya Market, want to leave a review specifically for their sushi and onigiri. Omg, it's so fresh and affordable! Of all the grocery store sushi I've eaten I consistently go back to Nijiya because it's just the best! They also have a huge selections of ingredients that are hard to find at other grocery stores too. I've been coming here since I was a kid, back in the day when there was a goldfish store next door! It's one of the best Japanese grocery stores in SD!
google avatar

Shaun O.

Yelp
Nijiya is an indispensable resource from Los Angeles to San Diego. For all Japanese ingredients, to great quality and reasonably priced sashimi for you DIY sushi/sashimi bowls. This one is in a central restaurant area and is convenient if you are going to a restaurant and want to shop after.
google avatar

Fiona N.

Yelp
We moved from the Bay Area and have always loved Nogiya. But this Nigiya is way better. We came for Daifuku that they make(not the frozen ones from japan). They make it so good. The skin was thin, and the filling was red bean. Out of curiosity I grabbed some pudding, I assume also made by Nigiya, one coffee and the other was custard. Both were amazingly good. I will come back for more dessert after having my meals in convoy area.
google avatar

Linda H.

Yelp
A great little market but they need to improve checkout time. My second visit there, and both times it has taken an eternity to get out.
google avatar

Momoca K.

Yelp
one of my favorite Japanese supermarkets around! I've been going here ever since I first moved to San Diego and it's been such a lifesaver. They have all the condiments to ingredients you will need to make pretty much any Japanese dish. Coming here reminds me of home but it makes me miss it more :( regardless, I'm so thankful that there are Japanese supermarkets to choose from in the area. I tend to get their sweets and little sashimi/pre-cooked foods here a lot as I noticed they are more affordable compared to the other ones :) the staff are always very polite and helpful. Definitely recommend checking them out for your daily needs :)
google avatar

Sally H.

Yelp
We had to wait outside for a bit but it wasnt bad. A staff member was sanitizing each cart as it came out. This isn't the biggest Japanese grocery store in the area but it had all we needed. They have fresh fish, meat and veggies that are not normally found in American stores. We often shop here as my husband is Japanese and loves foods from home. The store is well stocked, staff is friendly and helpful. The store is clean and bright. We found several sale items. They also have Japanese bento ( box lunch). They will give you chop sticks at the register if you want to eat lunch somewhere outside. This is a great grocery store to find adventurous foods.

Foody T.

Yelp
I'm walking in a candy store. This store has everything that u may dream of coz it has all things of Japanese food. It's quite. Food tour. I recommend this place u may find something of interest.

Yelp
BEST OF THREE There are three Japanese grocery markets within the Convoy corridor. This one is my favorite in terms of shopping experience. And, the parking scenario is easy to cope with. I always had a craving for Japanese snacks and tea beverages. So I load up when visiting Kearny Mesa. You see there's a fundamental lack of Japanese grocery stores in Las Vegas. Gone are the Longs Drugs which back then carried Japanese snack products from Hawaii. Note: You can find Hogetsu mochi here. Or you can drive drive down towards Tijuana to visit their mochi shop which is closed Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays. Plus they don't open late. Hogetsu is San Diego"s only local mochi maker.
google avatar

Yelp
Nijiya is an amazing Japanese Market located along Convoy St., in a small strip mall filled with restaurants. Nijiya also has their own organic farms that supply the market with specialty Japanese herbs and vegetables like Myoga, Sesame leaf, Tokyo onions, Shiso and many others! The Nijiya brand products, like soy sauce other items, all all top quality. Nijiya is much smalerl than Mitsuwa and is more of a specialty market. They have an excellent meat/seafood and prepared food section filled with sashimi, croquettes, tempura and other items. Nijiya is always worth a visit and the employees are always friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Michele M.

Yelp
Nijiya is my favorite Japanese market in San Diego. I've been shopping here off and on for a long time...15 years?? They have a decent parking lot and I haven't ever had an issue finding a space. Nijiya is not a huge supermarket but they have all the basics. I am Japanese American and I can get everything I need here. They have all my favorite pickles and everything I need to make some sushi or curry. And when I don't feel like cooking they have a nice selection of prepared foods and sushi. I can basically get everything that my mom makes for New Year's Day here, already made. They also sell fresh mochi and manju from Hogetsu Bakery in Chula Vista. Saves me the long drive down there and it's delicious! Service is always friendly here and it's clean.
google avatar

Ashley D.

Yelp
Nijiya is an awesome Japanese market. Considering it is such a small grocery store they have a large variety of items. They have fresh produce, teas, dairy, bakery items, meat and seafood, kitchen items, home electronics, and prepared foods. The lines are not usually longer than a couple minutes and the staff is friendly. The only downside is the parking. The lot is small, shared with a lot of other businesses and the spots themselves are tiny.

Emily U.

Yelp
Snacks! Snacks! Snacks! Grocery shopping can be fun when you end up buying things you're not supposed too.
google avatar

Jack M.

Yelp
I did a little shopping at this Japanese Market as I was waiting for a nearby eatery to open up for lunch. I picked a variety of items including some fantastic Reed avocados at $2.99 lbs, some organic wheat and buckwheat soba noodles, and some Japanese imported soy sauce. The market is nice and organized. One thing they do need to do is add the scales on the produce section so patrons can have an idea how much they are paying for goods, like in my case with the Reed avocados. They carry a lot of cool noodles in the noodle aisle. I was impressed that they carry a good selection of Soba noodles to choose from. The ones I bought were $2.69 for three bundles or servings in the package. They carry fresh herbs and vegetables outside. They were priced higher than I see at most places but they were good quality. The employees were quite helpful when I asked questions and the young lady at the register was very nice and had a great attitude. This is a great place to visit when you are looking for those hard to find unique Japanese items or even the run of the mill items.
google avatar

Conner S.

Yelp
Lots of break bento and pre-made food options. I'll admit I haven't come here to really grocery shop - however of all the Japanese grocery stores in the area, this is my go-to for late night food. If you come past 8pm, much of the pre-made food is discounted and it's a great deal. The selection won't be the same as lunch, but you will still find some great things. You can get sushi, onigiri, hand rolls, and hot food (food you need to reheat). It always hits the spot!
google avatar

Daniel H.

Yelp
I stopped in to pick up sushi. They had a nice selection of pre made and diy options. I went with premade and was not at all disappointed. The sushi was tasty and seemed as fresh as the local restaurants that want to charge way more for the same style of rolls. Also I appreciated that the cashier was very friendly.
google avatar

Danny W.

Yelp
Not sure if this was a grocery store or a doctors office. Japanese markets and Nijiya in particular are so pristinely clean that it gives you a little extra comfort shopping there during these times. I popped in to pick up a few Japanese sandwiches for a project and couldn't help but pick out a few other things that peaked my interest. It's almost impossible not to here. An excellent shopping experience with very friendly staff. I'll be back when I need something Japanese or just need to kill some time browsing fun items.
google avatar

Natalie Z.

Yelp
I've been coming here since I was a wee one to get any and all Japanese related specialty items before H-mart opened near my house. The supermarket is always pristinely clean at all times, and it has been comforting to shop here during COVID. I am a huge fan of their pre-made bento boxes, sushi, and sashimi-grade fish. Usually, any remaining items are sold at a discount at night, but ever since COVID hit the shelves are empty during the evening. I think it might be because the store deliberately does not want to create a surplus for public health-safety reasons, which is very considerate. If you want a bento, definitely come in before 2-3 PM. During pre-COVID times there were also warmers where you could pick up some freshly fried curry croquettes and other fritters, but unfortunately it is not safe enough to bring them back. In their bakery aisle, there are also fresh mochi shipments from local mochi makers (primarily from the LA area). They are melt in your mouth and my favorite treat for when I stop by here.

Yelp
I love this Market because it's always clean and fresh. They have a great selection of produce and of bakery items. I like that they have health conscious quick prepare items as well. I always make sure to stock up here for snacks whenever I take a trip.
