Nikkei, a New Montreal Restaurant Serving Japanese-Peruvian Cuisine, Is Opening in the Plateau | Eater Montreal

"Opening Thursday, June 23, this new spot from the team behind Plateau Peruvian restaurant Barranco brings Nikkei cuisine—Peruvian ingredients like ají amarillo combined with Japanese preparation techniques that emerged after late-19th-century Japanese immigration to South America—to Laurier Avenue East. Executive chefs and co-owners Daniel Silva and Michelangelo Miceli spearhead a tapas-style menu that features ceviche in a ponzu sauce, filet mignon tataki spiced with togarashi, tuna tartare dressed in aji amarillo, chirashi brightened with leche de tigre, and rib tonkatsu slathered in an adobo sauce traditional to Peru’s Arequipa region. On the drinks front I found classics such as pisco and maracuya (passion fruit) sours alongside more than a dozen original cocktails—many garnished with herbs and flowers grown in the restaurant’s backyard—as well as a selection of natural wines and sakes. The 1,380-square-foot space, which previously housed Café Les Entretiens, seats 70 inside with room for 40 outdoors and was revamped by local firm Rebel Design with plush velvet seating, fish-scale mosaic tiling, and dark, charcoal-coloured wood surfaces finished using the Japanese shou sugi ban charring technique; I note it will operate daily from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m." - Valerie Silva

Went for a last minute anniversary date to celebrate 21 years of 🖤🎃. Some staff (and we) were in the Halloween 👻 spirit so we got free Pisco shots. Unfortunately it was the Mtlatable event so regular menu options were limited, but we were still happy with our choices. Super friendly staff and gr8 service!

Absolutely loved the cocktails they developed in honour of la semaine de la martinique gourmande. The decor and ambiance are pretty nice, but it is very cold inside. We had a scallops Japanese curry, which was delicious, but very small portion prices are relatively high for how much food you get. The other dishes were not very memorable. would maybe still try again, depending on the menu they have / change out

I visited the restaurant with a friend after seeing all the great reviews. We went on a Tuesday evening a few weeks ago but the experience stayed in my mind for a while and decided to write a review. We went to the restaurant without any reservations. It was an active evening but wouldn’t say very busy. They had quite a few tables available and the seats at the bar were mostly empty. We were to be seated at the bar and requested a table instead. The hostess told us she would check and let us know if there’s any tables available when there were clear over 4 tables available in just the section we were. After 10 minutes, we asked one of the waiters/bartenders if we could have a table. He said he’d check but again after 15 minutes still nothing. We decided to just order at the bar our meals and drinks. After a while, we were just uncomfortable so asked the guy behind the bar ( one of the cooks I think) if we could have a table. The first and only genuinely nice guy we encountered that evening at the restaurant, and within a minute of checking he said of course. We then changed table after waiting around for almost 30 minutes. Now at the table, we waited another 20 minutes for our first dish that the waitress left at the table rudely without explaining what it was. The dish itself was the eel, which I personally quite enjoyed. We had to wait another 20 minutes for the other dish and again left without any explanation. During the night, the waitress never asked if we enjoyed the meal, give us water or even smiled at us. On top of all that, after 40 minutes of being at the restaurant we hadn’t received our drinks. So I tried getting the bartenders attention, same guy from the beginning who said he’d check for our table but never came. He then told us we never placed an order for drinks… At this stage, I am quite done with the service and treatment but my friend tells me to be patient and give it one last chance. We order our drinks and wait another 15 minutes to get it. Which honestly would’ve been reasonable if we had just walked in but we had already been waiting for over 40 minutes. Finally we get our drinks, which were pretty average. We wanted to get more drinks as we were there celebrating but again never once were we asked if we wanted more drinks or anything for that. I wouldn’t even give one star for the service honestly. It was the first time in my life that I didn’t feel like even leaving a tip. We still left a 15% tip which was way too much for the service. As for the food, I wouldn’t even give say it’s so so. We had to wait around 20-30 minutes between dishes and weren’t very impressed. The only dish I enjoyed was the eel. Personally, I would never go back mainly for the experience.

Wow. Did not know what to expect, the food was very good. Two of us took the chef diner for 2. Very good. Very much enjoyed and reasonably price for the quality.

My friends and I wanted to try a new tapas place and saw this one had some good ratings. I must say price is Very HIGH for what it is and the food isn’t that good. It’s quite salty and some weird mix that needs to be worked on. I liked maybe 2 out of the 8 dishes and I am someone who likes pretty much everything in food. Drinks were fine, they tasted quite good and service was very good. Our waitress was great, attentive and nice. The atmosphere and ambiance were great too, good lighting, very clean, and nice decorations.

Nikkei is a must try when you are in Montreal. A creative fusion of Peruvian and Japanese cuisine turned out to be the perfect marriage. Our group of 7 decided to order 3 tasting menus that contained 6 dishes of the chef's selection and the chef hit on every single dish. Not only was it an incredible bargain at $63 CAD per person, the meal was also the best we had during our visit. The filet skewers (Yakiton de Res) were perfectly cooked, the mushroom ceviche proved to be the most interesting and pleasant surprise. The Chirashi Cevichado had the most luscious and thick yellowtail, tuna and salmon sashimi slices over a bed of sushi rice and an outstanding leech de Tigre (Tiger's Milk) marinade. We fought over the last piece of unagi and the pork hamburguesitas were so juicy and fun to eat. Another super creative and unsuspecting favorite was the Pinku Bitsu, thinly sliced beets in an incredible pickled green onion vinaigrette. The Lomito Saltado, which was the closest thing to a main course, delivered a spectacular combination of meat and potatoes with an asian flair that I will not soon forget. The cocktails were also superb! We indulged on the Koraku, Yamaji, Tokyo Sour, Nikkeroni (their take on the Negroni) and the Ginger Maracuya Sour. Each was more creative and tastier than the next. The dessert, a salted caramel with a torched marshmallow on top was the perfect way to complete the meal. Chloe took wonderful care of us while we watched the foot traffic go by in the quaint neighborhood not far from down town. As stated from the outset, Nikkei is a must when you are here!

Everything about this place was fantastic! The service was impeccable, the food was even better! I had seen some hype around it on social media and finally got around to going for my birthday. We did a tasting menu and literally everything we tried was incredible! I love the fusion between the two cultures, and the menu was so perfectly curated. The quality of the ingredients is also so obvious in every bite you take. I would definitely recommend this restaurant, and I definitely will be visiting it in the future!

This restaurant offers tapas in a fantastic fusion of Peruvian and Japanese cuisine, along with a delightful selection of cocktails. We tried serveral small dishes and we particularly enjoyed the incredible mix of flavors of the Lomito Saltado. We also loved the attention to detail, like the adorable origami crane pinned to the Sakaya cocktail we ordered—it was not only a charming touch but also delicious! For dessert, we had the "Suspiro Nikkei," and it was nothing short of a revelation. The creative combination of dulce de leche and miso flavors wowed us. The lively decor enhanced our experience, creating a vibrant atmosphere that was both inviting and fun. Furthermore, The service was friendly and efficient.

Yelp
Very cool vibe and aesthetic. We loved hanging out in this swanky environment for a quick bite. The service was kind of slow even though there were only 2 tables - ours and one other. That was annoying because we had to wait a long time to order for no reason. The menu is online and their website doesn't have an English option. Very inconvenient and not tourist friendly. Minus one star for an all around poor experience ordering. The host/waiter was drying glasses at the bar and kept blowing into them to get water droplets out so minus one star for that. So gross. The food came out separately even though we ordered at the same time and made it clear one dish was for one of us and one was for the other. That meant that one of us was eating while the other waited because the food was going to get cold. Minus another star for splitting the order by a full 10 minutes. This place has a lot of potential. The flavor of the nigiri was great, but the portion size was amuse-bouche and not tapas. To charge $15 for 1/2 oz of beef and 5 cents worth do rice is highway robbery. The shishito peppers were great, all 4 of them. Most of the dish is peas which are used as filler. Again, charging $15 for about $2 worth of ingredients is ridiculous ESPECIALLY since the flavor of that dish wasn't anything spectacular. If you want less expensive shishito peppers with better flavor AND a great view, head over to Terasse Nelligan. Bottom line, I wanted to love this place when I walked in, but left underwhelmed and feeling ripped off having spent $40 for two tapas plates.

Yelp
Was here for dinner recently and had a great time! The decor is super cute and had an awesome vibe. We were sat at the bar and had a nice view of the kitchen and chefs cooking. We ordered a couple of dishes, all of which were really good! The raw fish/ sashimi were super fresh, and we really enjoyed the cocktails we ordered. Taking one star off because they could have been more generous with the ramen broth. Service was really friendly and efficient!

Yelp
Ehh I thought this place was massively overhyped. The raw fish dishes were fine but didn't have a ton of taste or feel like the chef was doing anything special. I thought the ribs were legitimately bad. The best dish we had were the scallops but I'd say they were good not great. The place is cool and has a great vibe but I just didn't find the food to be worth the price.

Yelp
Bonne qualité des plats mais le service est trop pressé pour que les clients consomment le plus possible. Trop chère.

Yelp
Best restaurant in Montreal. From the ambiance to the service and top it off with the amazing food, absolutely amazing experience. Definitely make a reservation and request to sit at the chef's kitchen. The food was absolutely delicious. Will be my first stop on my return trip to Montreal.

Yelp
the restaurant is amazing! I love their Mac and cheese and they're lobster roll. This restaurant is a 10/10.
