Yelp
We went here like 10 years ago and were dreaming of the chance to going back because the experience had been so wonderful that first time and the food was so good. Unfortunately times have changed the place.
The decor was the same but it was more of a sports bar now than an upscale yet urban Japanese restaurant. We arrived and couldn't find the entrance, like many people we did the "walk past a couple of times til you figure it out" walk.
When we got inside we had arrived early for our reservation (20 mins or less prior) and the host stand seemed to panic about it. We said it was fine, we could wait until our turn. They offered us outdoor seating, we said we didn't want to sit outside. Who makes a reservation a week ahead of time to eat outside?
They said they could seat us inside as long as we didn't go over our reservation time. Then tried to add a joke "like you know sitting there like 5 hrs past!" Should have taken that as a sign that this time would be different.
Anywho, place was packed. We ordered our drinks, they came out quickly enough. Decided to try something alcoholic, the waiter was nice enough to let us know the strawberry purée they were using tasted weird and recommend something else which we liked very much. This is what saved this from being a one star.
We ordered our food, and the atmosphere started to get a little crowded, an old scraggy looking DJ started setting up, this was warning number 2. We saw our waiter coming back with our tray of food. He was about to give it to us, but he set it down on the table across the walkway from us and rushed to the door. I assumed it was to stop some guests from walking out, and to check them in.
Nope, it was actually just his friends. He was cutting up with them, not once did he go to the host station, and you normally don't dap random guests and stand there butting shoulders. Our food was right there, we really could have slid out from our table and just grabbed it ourselves. He eventually started back towards us, then his manager said something and he turned and went in another direction for another few minutes. Our food was still sitting on this open table just across from us.
He came back and delivered our dishes, the food was bland, I ordered a seafood dish with fried rice on the side and my partner got a filet mignon with lobster tail. We ate it all because it was expensive, not because it tasted good.
Overall, this is a big change from our last experience and we should have checked yelp before going back. This was just sad. We thankfully left just as the DJ was picking up, because he was leaving things to be desired as well, and only 30 mins after our reservation time of 7:30.
