13 Places to Find Skewers in NYC | Eater NY

"This comfortable corner spot coaxes Greek skewer meats and patties to a consistency noticeably softer than what most of the souvlaki carts that dot Astoria dole out. From the chunks of beef to the chicken bifteki patties ($4 to $5 per stick or as a platter), skewers here are all drizzled with lemon and served with pita bread, tzatziki and mustard-based Niko’s sauce. The outdoor wrap-around dining area is comfortable but for guests who want the breeze, it’s a cinch to pack up the skewers for a picnic at Astoria Park one block away." - Caroline Shin

Top NYC Brunch Restaurants For Takeout, Delivery, and Outdoor Dining | Eater NY

"While this Astoria Greek restaurant doesn’t have a dedicated brunch menu, many of the dishes here are ideal for takeout to be eaten in Astoria Park nearby or to be enjoyed at the restaurant’s patio seating. Aside from the gyros expect dishes like the grilled pita sandwich, skepasti, bacon-wrapped chicken skewers, and desserts like the orange phyllo cake, portokalopita. The restaurant is open daily from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m." - Eater Staff

Exciting music and delicious food! I came here on a friend’s recommendation, and it exceeded my expectations. The fresh vegetables, mouthwatering meat, and freshly fried potatoes are absolutely delicious. And the ice-cold cup served with the beer is just perfect!

I dropped in after visiting a few friends in the neighborhood. The restaurant is in a desirable area, with plenty of outdoor seating. The owner/manager was a gentleman who greeted me upon arrival and was tentative. I very much enjoyed chicken souvlaki with a scrumptious salad that was popping with freshness and flavor. The inside dining area was cozy and promoted an excellent experience. I would highly recommend this eatery. Enjoy.

It was my first time eating at this local restaurant. It’s a quaint little place tucked away near Astoria Park. Rosie was our waitress and she made the experience there so much better. Her timing with following up with us was so nice. She made great recommendations and has a great sense of humor. The food was beyond my expectation and the team seems to work pretty well under pressure bc it was extremely busy and we were in and out really quick. Definitely can’t wait to go again.

Google
I lived here almost all my life and this by far is one of the best Greek spots in Astoria, service is amazing food is top tier and price is great ! My favorite is anything pork or with meat , literally melts in your mouth and is so well combined when you add all the condiments veggies and pitta along with it ! Greek salad didn’t disappoint I love a great salad that has lots of feta, the second time I went I got the special which was some sort of pork wrapped with bacon, cheese and peppers recommended by the waitress and wow !!! I trusted this waitress with my life after that and asked for a dessert recommendation and we got the orange cake. The texture was literally perfect and like something I never tasted before.

They forgot the fries for our order but immediately and kindly remedied the situation. Great service. Spicy feta dip was amazing. Recommend chicken stick!! We walked one block over to the park and had a lovely picnic by the water 😋

Google
Strolling past Niko Souvlaki on a casual evening wander, I didn’t expect to stumble into a culinary Greek hug—but that’s exactly what happened. This spot doesn’t whisper “maybe try me”, it shouts “you’re gonna want me.” I ordered the chicken souvlaki platter on a whim, expecting something modest. Instead, I was handed a dish so generously portioned it looked like it was cooked by a Greek grandma with strong opinions about portion control. And let me tell you—every bite slapped. Succulent chicken, vibrant sides, and just the right seasoning to make your taste buds throw a plate-smashing celebration. Not only did it satisfy a craving, it left me planning my next Mediterranean detour. If you’re in the mood for hearty comfort food that’s equal parts flavor and generosity, this is the spot.

Google
We loved the decor and the service was excellent! Highly recommend the small platter ($70 order). Would definitely come back here again!

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful experience. The food was delicious and the staff was super kind considering how our day was playing out. The restaurant was comfortable and good music as well. Very kind and patient staff and food was 10/10. Would definitely go back for the tzatziki with pita bread and chicken gyro was great.

Yelp
Niko's Souvlaki restaurant offers an amazing dining experience with beautiful decor, though my friends and I chose to sit outside to enjoy the lovely day. Post-gym and starving, we ordered Greek fries as an appetizer, followed by the Small Grill Platter and Chicken Skepasti as our main courses. The portions were impressive, though I wouldn't order the Greek fries again since the Skepasti included a generous serving of fries. The Greek fries are more on the softer side, well-seasoned but not crunchy, the Skepasti was a flavor bomb with perfectly paired ingredients. The Small Grill Platter, very thoroughly seasoned, it was delicious with a variety of meats on a bed of soft pita bread. The staff was sweet and patient, making the overall experience at Niko's Souvlaki amazing. Definitely recommend. (Small update: I had the leftovers the next day and it was just amazing)

Yelp
Tried the kovosouvli chicken plate and it was the perfect size for 2 people! It was fun to get it to go and picnic at Astoria park. We also tried a couple of Greek beers which paired well with the food. The beer was light and it was a nice vibe for a picnic!

Leah C.

Yelp
Bad customer service. We came here for lunch and we were super excited to try it for the first time. The host told us to sit anywhere but then had issues with the first two places we chose. Literally we did not care where we sat -- wish she would have just told us where to sit initially. She was so rude we ended up just leaving and going down the street. Sad because we were excited to try the food!

Yelp
Came here with friends for lunch one day and the food was superb! The restaurant isn't too big, but I think there was seating outside as well. Service is friendly and prompt, prices and portions are also reasonable. Combo of 3 Spreads: tzatziki, niko's sauce, and tyrokafteri sauce. I can't remember which one was my favorite but they were all pretty good and came with the fluffiest pita breads. We pretty much dipped everything into these spreads, they were nice portions too Pork Platter: the pieces of pork were so crispy but still soo juicy! Almost like crispy pork belly. I would say the portion is pretty generous as our party of five were left feeling satiated, but that might also be we went crazy on the pita bread and dip. Okay maybe it was the carbs that left us stuffed haha Skepasti: I think this was the name of what we ordered, it looked like a quesadilla with the meat sandwiched into pita bread and lots of cheese. Super cheesy and soft, it's yummy

Amanda W.

Yelp
Very very salty chicken gyro and pork gyro - fries were good, service was good - tables needs to get cleaned better with a clean towel and not dirty one

Fernando N.

Yelp
Excellent service... also the Niko's sauce is a must.. great experience... I would only like to have more beverages but as long as they have coke is good enough for me

Mike P.

Yelp
Nice Greek souvlaki food place by Astoria park. Service was good and timely and the grill platter was made fresh with good variety and was very tasty. The gyro-pita sandwiches also were delicious. Prices were competitive with similar places.

Yelp
After a good gym workout, my buddy and I decided to give this place a try as we were in the mood for some good Greek cuisine. The server was very friendly and gladly recommended a few items in the menu. We were served our food very quick, probably because the restaurant was pretty empty as it was on a Monday afternoon. I ordered the Lamb Chops (quarter kilo) with Hand Cut Fries, Pita Bread and Tzatziki Sauce. The Lamb Chops were very tasty and tender, and the fries were deliciously seasoned. The place had a very chill and relaxing ambience. Prices can range from $4 to $125 depending on what you order and the amount of people but most platters are in the $22 range. This restaurant is located on a residential area so parking is not that hard to find. I definitely suggest you check this place out if you're in Ditmars, Astoria

Yelp
Went here for a late dinner and got a gyro it was delicious as expected. I also got their orange cake dessert which was drizzled with syrup. Very good experience.

Yelp
Excellent souvlaki and lamb chops.! We came here twice this past summer, once; for a sit-down and once for a quick and light meal. On the first occasion, we met the owner Nik who personally served us. Very early in the pandemic, he took a chance. He opened a new souvlaki restaurant with gyros, souvlaki, lamb shanks, and other Greek dishes. Nikos Souvlaki has become the best souvlaki restaurant in Astoria. Indeed, my friend found them so good that he recommended them to his friends in Forest Hills. Our first meal was a quick indoor meal where we ordered chicken and pork souvlaki platters. The meal lasted under an hour, and we ordered some Greek appetizers and a salad. The second meal meal the following week was much longer and more expensive as we ate outside. This time it was a rack of lamb chops, tarama, and Greek salad. The whole meal took much longer to prepare and lasted almost two hours. In both cases, we came away full and very satisfied. My experience there on both occasions is that this is a firm recommendation. The restaurant has a lovely bistro/café feel, but I can't say it scores well on ambiance and atmosphere. It was pretty dead when we arrived at the end of the week. Overall a very positive experience!

Yelp
After a nice day walking in Astoria park, decided to walk in to this restaurant to have some food. I ordered their cucumber salad, with veggie appetizer, and two chicken skewers. The food was okay. I thought the veggie appetizer was probably the best dish I ordered. The chicken was dry. I took 3 stars off because the service was pretty bad. We sat down and it took them a long time to take our order. The server did not introduce themselves. They seemed focused on their phones rather than taking care of their customers. The food did come out quickly. However, they gave me the wrong sauce. I asked for Tzataski sauce and they gave me Niko's sauce instead.

Polly T.

Yelp
Ordered 4 different souvlaki sandwiches and three were not edible. The pork souvlaki was mostly fat on maybe 5 pieces of meat, the bifteki sandwich was raw inside and the pork souvlaki was drenched in tsatziki. They use to make really good food but lately unfortunately not so good. It was probably the last time I order from them.

Bianca D.

Yelp
I definitely don't recommend this business. When they first opened up they were great. Service was great, food, etc. Not even a year in the chef thought it would be a good idea to undercook the chicken. Never have I went there again since my chicken was so chewy it felt like I was chewing on pork fat. Chicken is NOT supposed to be PINK. And next time I order a chicken gyro DO not send me a pork one.. I don't eat PORK!!!!

Yelp
Niko's serves a solid Gyro. This is a very casual spot and you can take a walk in the park nearby after your meal. Come here for your Gyro fix

Kristin K.

Yelp
Was looking for a place to grab lunch after playing tennis at Tennis Point on Randall's Island and thought Astoria looked pretty close with many options. And it was! Took us about 15 minutes to get from Tennis Point to Niko's and parking was easy to find. Had already done some research on Yelp and bookmarked Niko's as the menu had many options and there were already many good reviews. We couldn't have asked for a better place to have lunch. The staff was friendly and welcoming (and my dad asks many questions!). We were pleased they had some Greek beers available and were excited for the frosty glasses they served them with. We shared the Horiataki salad to start - very fresh - was particularly impressed with the tomatoes which are not really in season yet - and each had a souvlaki sandwich (pork for him and chicken with me) with everything (even the frenchfries). Portions were generous - we finished our sandwhiches and took the leftover salad home.

Yelp
You can choose to sit inside or outside. Since it was boiling hot outside, we decided to sit inside. The ac wasn't working properly, but that's another story. All of the staff were super nice and the waiter gave his recommendation which was the special for the weekend. They put meat on a skewer and roasted it up for five hours prior to serving. We ended up getting the Lamb and the Pork platters which either came with fries or rice, lettuce- tomato salad, and sauce. I had to ask for hot sauce as it needed some flavor on my end, but everything else was good.

Yelp
New restaurant, opened at the start of the pandemic back in March. It is still open and that proves how good the food is. Food 5/5 DELICIOUS! The owner, Niko, is from Greek from Greece. Family recipe. Comparable to the ones I had in Athens. The beef patties are mouth watering good. Very big portion, very value for money. The semolina cake with syrup was the perfect way to wrap up the meal Service 5/5 The owner and staff are so friendly and personal. Throughout the duration of the meal, we saw so many returning regular customers and they remember their favorite orders. Everyone is wearing a mask and practicing Covid Protocols Ambiance 5/5 Bright and clean inside and nicely set up covered outdoor sitting too. Ceiling heater for the cooler weather. Must eat, must try if you're in Ditmars

Yelp
Nikos Souvlaki is the closest you can get to authentic Greek gyro and souvlaki in New York!!! We have dined here dozens of times and love the staff and food. Service is fast yet not rushed. Everyone, including Niko the owner, is always friendly and connects well with the crowd. Food is exceptionally authentic and of highest quality. They often offer kontosouvli and kokoretsi dishes, which are difficult to find in New York City. It is also important to note that price wise, it is a very affordable option compared to other Greek restaurants. Niko is a very hardworking person and we love coming here for gyro (we drive to Astoria from New Jersey because it is the best souvlaki in NY!) Keep up the good work, Niko! Sandy & Theodore

Yelp
Food is not good. Gyro really salty. Overly long wait times for takeout and still managed to get the orders wrong! Honestly, I do not write a lot of negative reviews because I want businesses to thrive and have second chances but every time I've come here the service is extraordinarily bad and experience distasteful. I recommend everyone skip in favor of any of the better Greek restaurants in Astoria.

Yelp
Stopped by to pick up lunch, I ended up getting the kotobifteki chicken, and it was really good! Full of flavor and it wasn't dry! The restaurant was nice and clean.

Yelp
It's really been a while since I've ordered anything (I've been very good on my Keto diet and have been making meals at home) so I really was SUPER excited to try out this new-ish place, that just happens to be around the corner from my apartment. Well, I ordered the Chicken Gyro Platter for pick-up and was happy they had taken into consideration my request of substituting rice for a salad. Lo and behold, as I am still going strong on my low-carb kick, I was over the moon to try the protein-packed awesomeness that is chicken! No exaggerating--this was probably my worst experience with grilled chicken. Aside from having it ever undercooked, which is always TERRIBLE too of course, this chicken looked sooooooo well done (yes, I did request it) that it seemingly had hardened?! I mean, seriously. Not burnt. Not charred. Simply..... hard. The outside of it was just.... also bland. And did I mention HARD?! As if you'd left it out for a few days or in the back of your fridge not covered. I had no idea how else to better explain it than to shoot a video of it. It will possibly do ME some justice. Sorry for the shit review. Now I'm off to make a keto meal
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite Greek food in THE Greek neighborhood! I usually get the chicken or pork gyros and they always hit the spot. They're also a perfect meal to grab on your way to the park. The employees are always super nice, too! Make sure you check their website before you order... you may find something better than ordering here
google avatar

Raymart D.

Yelp
Opened in the middle of the pandemic! They are open with gyros, platters, skewers, and the like. The restaurant is the traditional Greek white and blue colors and they play Greek music as well. They are doing delivery as well if you call their phone number. The platter was delicious and loved the sauce for it. The partner enjoyed the tzatziki as well. Glad to support a local business and hopefully they continue. For sure would eat again!
google avatar

Fred C.

Yelp
Clean dining room and Bathroom. Food was hot and fresh. Friendly service. Street parking is decent.

Darcy D.

Yelp
The gyro was pretty good but the service was strange. I took it out but as I was waiting for my food two co-workers were screaming at each other. It was so uncomfortable. I don't know if it was the owner and his worker but it was nuts. Hard to get their attention between all of the yelling. Won't be going back...

Bojay179 ..

Yelp
Came here with a group of 6 friends for the first time. Niko, the owner, welcomed us and was very hospitable. I ordered the chicken platter, which was savory and tender. Ended with an orange sponge cake. Everything was delicious, and the service was great. Definitely recommend. Thank you Niko!
google avatar

Ami Y.

Yelp
I was hanging out at Astoria Park and got hungry, so I decided to get the pork gyro pita from Niko's. The pita was soft and it was pretty good in general. Some points that concerned me was that the pork gyro presumably had too much time on the heat and most of the pieces were too hard and dry. Another concern was that there were almost no lettuce in my sandwich - maybe they tried to compromise by including more tomato pieces, but I wish they could've let me know that they're out of lettuce if that was the case.
google avatar

Alex G.

Yelp
Came all the way from SoHo to give Niko's a try and holy sh** it was so damn good. Can confirm authentic, they speak Greek and we met Niko, he's straight outta Athens. Portions and flavor are amazing too. Can't go wrong with anything.
google avatar

Maggie C.

Yelp
Yum! This place was highly recommended by a store owner in Astoria. I really liked the panchetta wrap and the pork platter. It was a lot of food! I just wish they gave a lot more tzatziki sauce. If I order again, I'll get more tzatziki on the side.
google avatar

Adrienne L.

Yelp
I wanted to love this place since a) it's so close to my home b) I love Greek food and c) having grown up in Astoria have seen many businesses try and fail in this spot, would love to see a business do well here. But it fell short of my expectations. I've been eating Greek food for the better part of 30 years and unfortunately this one doesn't make my cut of best Greek restaurants in Astoria. What they got right: The Greek Fries were excellent, perfect combo of crispy and salty with feta crumbles. What they missed the mark on: The Halloumi appetizer was grossly overpriced (see picture attached). The TINY portion was definitely not worth the $12 price tag. The bitter lettuce it was garnished with did not help. The chicken gyro lacked the authenticity of a typical Greek gyro. Instead of being dressed with tzatziki sauce it was dressed with mayonnaise (as other Yelpers mentioned), resulting in a bland sandwich. I've had mayo and mustard on gyros before, but just not mayo. The gyro was also very light on chicken. I would maybe order their Greek fries again, but will stick to Agnanti, Taverna Kyclades and BZ Grill for my Halloumi and gyro cravings.

Yelp
I closed my eyes, and we were immediately in our favorite souvlakia in Glyfada, Greece. We went three times in two weeks, I highly recommend! COVID-19 Preparedness: all masked up, ample space between tables (if you're dining in, which we did), clean, CLEAN bathroom (I'm a bit OCD), crew masked up and considerate of "personal space" at all times. Yes, they are READY Food: Fresh ingredients, expertly prepared, and adequately portioned. We've had the Mixed Meat Platter, both Chicken & Pork Souvlakis, Gyro, Salas, Bacon & Chicken Souvlaki, all the dips, fries... never dry meats, never soggy veggies,.. confidently say the BEST SOUVLAKI in Astoria. Wine: mmmm Resitna wine... get a BIG carafe. It's a unique and traditional resinated wine with a over 2000 years of history. Crew/Owner: Attentive, hospitable, and professional, always with a smile and eager to assist. Outdoor Dining: Ready for a blizzard! Clean, Proper, and warm. Kid-Friendliness: Yes. Our 3YO loves it here! OVERALL: Proper Greek Souvlaki with proper Greek hospitality. P.S. we are a Greek family who are part-year residents in Greece . And also have been to almost all Greek restaurants (big and small) in Astoria.

Yelp
Delicious, food came out hot, restaurant was clean and fresh. The service was fast and accurate.

Yelp
Went to Niko's for the 1st time yesterday for dinner...Good service/ Good food...I'll B going again

Robert T.

Yelp
good service and great food, what else do i gotta say honestly. got our waters refilled and the portions are sizeable

A N.

Yelp
Just has the most basic "chicken gyro" sandwich for $12.50. It wasn't even an actual gyro, but plain grilled chicken in a pita, not the sliced gyro meat. There was not even any tzatziki/white sauce. They put mayo instead! Who does that!!?? Expensive and tasteless. I'd skip. There are too many amazing places in Astoria that actually sell chicken gyro at a much more reasonable price.
google avatar

Sabrina F.

Yelp
At first I thought the prices were expensive for the menu options but when my plate arrived I realized that wasn't the case. The pork gyro was delicious and crispy, the fries perfectly cooked and tomatoes on the salad super fresh. PLATE WAS HUGE! Great to go with a hungry bunch. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
Went here for the first time yesterday. Food was very good! I recommend the chicken wrapped in bacon platter and the regular chicken on pita! Both were delicious. Just took off one star because service could be a little better. Will be back :)
google avatar

Xander A.

Yelp
How would you feel if you were abruptly moved to a colder section of the outside dining area to accommodate friends of the owner/manager? There we were enjoying our drinks and waiting for our food for a good 20 minutes under the heat lamps when the server asked us to move all the way to the back which she claimed was just as warm (IT WAS NOT). The whole place was empty but apparently this VIP party had to take our table because it was "reserved"? Well then why did you tell us to "sit anywhere" when we arrived? SHADY SHADY SHADY! Then... a random gentleman who had jumped out of a parked car walks in without identifying himself to ask us "how is everything"? uhhhhhh? what? Then.... the one minor specification to our meal was not followed and had to be corrected. Really? This schizophrenic experience left a bad taste in our mouths. Not coming back.

angelina p.

Yelp
Great food and great service! I live very close so this is most definitely my go to for a weekend craving! Business is great also, I ordered from here on uber eats once (I usually pick up) and they forgot my side of fries. I called back right away they answered and sent one over immediately! Definitely a good choice.
google avatar

Anton T.

Yelp
The best Greek food I ever had, I recommend ordering their Chicken skewers, the chicken is very tender and fresh. Couple it with their grilled veggies plate and mix it all onto their soft pita bread, along with their pasty tzatziki sauce and grilled feta cheese. Divine!
google avatar

Steve M.

Yelp
Came here yesterday and another time a month before. Completely different from the first time I ever came. First I came was arguably the best gyro in Astoria, the past two times my gyro was cold the only thing that made it relatively enjoyable was opening up the pita and eating the fries. Such a shame I hope they get it back together
google avatar

Alexi C.

Yelp
Nikos has been a great addition to Astoria. Their food is fresh, well priced, and the owner is always around to greet customers. Ditmars lacked a great souvlaki spot and nikos delivered. They have kokoretsi on the weekends as well iykyk

Steve R.

Yelp
I've ordered several times from Niko's and felt compelled to write a review about my experiences. About 3 of those times I ordered from their own website directly for takeout, since they say that ordering direct saves them the fees from the other food ordering sites. Each time, I went to pick up the food in the suggested 30 minutes and had to wait additional time because it was not ready. It seems like even though they say they prefer direct orders, they clearly prioritize the Seamless/GrubHub orders since those come into a tablet at the register while direct orders from the website seem to be printed from a printer under the counter that they forget to check. I can confirm the food is great though! I've ordered each different type of souvlaki and enjoyed them all with the tzatziki and Niko's sauces. BUT I can't comfortably give this establishment more than 2 stars because of the terrible service. Each visit leaves me with a sour taste and wanting to never go back again. The guy at the register completely ignores you when you walk up to the counter even if you're the only person in the entire restaurant! A "Welcome, I'll be with you in a minute" or any sort of acknowledgement would be nice. And waiting over an hour for 4 souvlaki sticks that I ordered online is ridiculous, I don't care how busy you are. In summary: Order from Seamless if you're ordering online, since at least you'll get a notification when your order is ready and can minimize the amount of time you need to spend dealing with the staff.

Tina K.

Yelp
Excellent food i love the quality they have great service The best Greek food in the area.

Janine B.

Yelp
This might be my favorite place in Astoria. Everything from here is consistently good. We love the halloumi pita sandwhich, the skepasti, and lemon potatos. I highly recommend all of these items. We always order extra Niko's sauce too because it's just that good! My only criticism is that I'd like to see more veggie options on the menu!

Elaine E.

Yelp
I ordered from their website for takeout. The food was hot and ready for me on time. I got the haloumi pita and it exceeded my expectations. A huge portion of cheese and all the right amount of everything. It was delicious! I also got a side of tzatzIki and lemon potatoes. Everything was excellent! I will definitely be back for more.

Yelp
So, I've been enjoying a variety of Greek eateries since cooking school days. This new spot does it right. High-quality ingredients skillfully seasoned result in meals that are delish. Support these folks during the pandemic. Delivery and pick up available. No kidding... You'll like it

Yelp
This place used to be amazing. Over the last year it has only gotten worse and worse every time. For the second time in a row several chicken skewers of our order was still raw inside. I also orders a chicken sandwich and the entire sandwich was covered in Mayo. With Astoria having so many great other Greek options this is a place I would steer clear from. Hope they get their act together because they used to be great.
