The World's Newest National Park Just Opened With the Planet's Oldest Animal Fossils

"Nilpena Ediacara National Park opened to the public on April 27. It is renowned for its fossil beds that preserve the oldest animals on Earth, known as Ediacara biota. The park offers guided tours to view these significant fossil beds, with ongoing work by paleontologist Mary L. Droser. The park's fossils, about 550 million years old, include the oldest records of animal sexual reproduction and mobility. Visitors must book guided tours to explore the fossils, and tours are operated by Ross Fargher, owner of the nearby Prairie Hotel. The site is part of the Flinders Ranges, being nominated for World Heritage Site status." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Seeing evidence of the first multicellular life on Earth - in the place it was first discovered rather than in a museum somewhere - is a very special privilege. Kym was an amazing guide, and deeply knowledgeable about the natural history of the Flinders Ranges and surrounding areas. We were definitely glad we took the extended tour to the outdoor fossil beds, but I think many people would be content with the shorter two hour tour where you'll get to see one of the biggest and most diverse fossil beds inside the visitor centre.

Spent a good three hours learning more about Ediacara’s and the Pre Cambrian period. The visit included a very modern and informative visitors centre. A woolshed visit and a bus ride to the 40+ fossil beds. We’ve travelled to many NPs both here and around the world and Kym has to be the friendliest, most entertaining but most informative guide/ranger we’ve ever experienced.

A must do if you are in the Flinders Rangers area. We had Ranger Kym as our host and guide, and he was fantastic with his knowledge and passion of this new park. A hands-on experience, where you touch and feel 550-million-year-old fossils!

Did the full tour with Dylan. Amazing experience and most knowledgeable commentary as we saw the fossil sites. The Alice’s Restaurant presentation was phenomenal! Well worth a trip to the Flinders for this experience.

I can touch a 500 million year old fossil? Yes! At Nilpena Ediacara National Park, you can! Thank you for removing the glass, and allowing what we all feel compelled to do - to experience by touching and imagining this rock coming to life. A superb facility and highly engaging educational afternoon, well spent. Special thanks to our guide Kim, who brought a wealth of insights and interesting knowledge to our day.

Our tour was mind-blowingly good. Our guide was very knowledgeable and personable with decades of work experience in the unique Flinders ranges. Both the presentation and the hands-on experience were very special. Do it before the world discovers it!

An absolutely mind boggling experience and it’s right here in SA. The longer tour was worth every cent and Kim was a great host. I was staggered at the importance and world recognition of this history changing site.

Book and go if you can! This was a fascinating tour of these special fossils. We had a small and friendly group led by Annie who was a terrific guide who bought alive the story of the fossils discovery. You arrive at the car park and are picked up to go on a small bus into the National Park. You’ll get to see the Woolshed and a new display area with a film, guiding you through one of the fossil beds laid out as an example.
