The Best Coffee Shops in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"It doesn’t get classier than Nina’s in the heart of St. Paul’s historic Cathedral Hill. Housed in an elegant building that dates back to the 1880s, the shop is filled with nooks and crannies to nestle into and has soaring windows that flood the space with light. Be warned, it’s hard to leave Nina’s — settle in with a cappuccino and scone." - Stacy Brooks

The Best Restaurants Along Selby Avenue in St. Paul’s Cathedral Hill | Eater Twin Cities

"At Nina’s (pronounced “Ny-na,” never “Nee-na”), exposed brick, wrought-iron stair banisters, and floor-to-ceiling windows make even the dreariest winter day feel romantic. Between the selection of pastries and breakfast sandwiches, the plentiful booth seating, and espresso drinks named after literary figures, many with some local fame — in the summer, the F. Scott Fitzgerald, with cold brew, is a popular order — you’ll see many a logoed sweatshirt from the colleges and universities that surround Cathedral Hill. Locals are represented here, too; neighbors are always running into each other in line for coffee and a doughnut (sourced from another Twin Cities stalwart, Bogart’s) on busy Saturday mornings." - Julie Yu

Google
Did someone say FANCYY?? This place is sooo gorgeous! The food and drinks are great! They have unique snacks and food you can pick from & a pretty standard but delicious drink menu. They have tons of seating and the lighting is stunning here. Staff is absolutely fantastic and super kind! I loved my visit and will definitely come back whenever I'm in the area!

Google
Very cool place to hang out it’s got that old time vibe very relaxed but modern accommodations. From super private to open seating. The arched entries and chandeliers created an elegant vibe. The coffee drink was delicious as were the pastries.

I had the chance to check out Nina’s Coffee in St. Paul and this spot did not disappoint. It offers a decent amount of space with plenty of solid menu options to choose from. Although I’m not a coffee drinker, I fell in love with their breakfast burrito. It was packed with flavor and came with a delicious sauce to dip it in. Honestly, this might be one of the best breakfast burritos in the city for its price. The spot can get pretty busy, especially during the morning rush, but it’s definitely worth the stop. Parking-wise, it’s mostly street parking, and I don’t believe there’s a lot nearby, so plan ahead. Overall, the vibes here are great, the service is solid, and the food is well worth it. I’ll definitely be back.

Google
Nina's has been around for decades and there's a reason why....it is so cozy, inclusive, community driven, and has a great coffee/bakery menu. I often work from this Cafe or meet ppl, as it's so comfortable. Shop local!

Google
Really cool cafe that is super busy weekend mornings. Coffee was good, but I was disappointed with their seasonal specials when I was there. They only had two which were basic fall menu items. Did enjoy their normal specialty drinks and look forward to going back.

Google
Awesome drinks and pastries, very nice space with a lot of seating options. So delicious I always go here and get a chocolate croissant and hot chocolate, and my friends and family love their coffee.

Google
Nina’s is popular for a reason! It’s been on my list for forever and it lived up to expectations. It was packed on a Thursday morning, but there were still tables available since the interior is large. Nina’s is a perfect third space, with people working, studying, and chatting. The lattes had a strong expresso flavor and were delicious. They were on the sweeter side, but the menu was large.

Google
I enjoy the atmosphere of this lovely historic building; it’s quite lively inside with the food and beverage counters just inside the door. They offer a nice selection of pastries and sandwiches. Plan to go early in the morning if you want a fresh scone baked the same day. Day old scones were available - but they are always best if just out of the oven. Excellent coffee!

Yelp
Nina's Coffee is cute and cozy inside, but it gets overwhelmingly busy and it can be really hard to find parking. The coffee is fine, nothing special, and the syrups are pretty basic rather than house-made, so don't expect anything super unique or craft-forward. Seating is limited and a lot of people work from here, so finding a spot to sit is hit or miss. It's a nice building and a good neighborhood hangout, but more for grabbing a quick drink than settling in if you don't get lucky with space.
google avatar

Blanca M.

Yelp
Crazy busy in a Saturday afternoon but it's a cute spot with modernly classic decor. Gluten free options are few but they did have a tray of muffins, a banana bread and donuts--not as fresh as the rest of the things (from Tuesday and Wednesday). Okay flavor. And cold!! They weren't great. They sell day old pasties at 50% off but the gluten free items that are several days old are not at any discount. Coffee options are very basic, nothing fancy not creative except maybe the neighborhood latte which has caramel. They offer Monin syrups flavor but meh. Ordered a Madam Nina latte which has honey and cinnamon.

Yelp
I've been to Nina's Coffee a few times, and every time it's quite busy which is the only reason I knocked it down a star. If you can snag a seat, it's such a cool spot to enjoy your coffee. I got an iced caramel latte, and it was delicious, no complaints there! A neighborhood staple and I'll definitely keep stopping by on my way to work!

Yelp
It is a very normal thing to be charmed by bustling urban coffee shops occupying historic street corners, and for that reason I am sure you will like Nina's. It is super, super cute. The menu of drinks will satisfy most people who are in the market for a caffeinated beverage in a mug, and although they have a case with some non-liquid offerings (I've had a good, sweet banana bread), you should think of it as a coffee counter and a big-on-ambience seating area. It's always been busy in there for me, and the crew behind the counter always keep up. I've only ever parked on the street, and I have no complaints about that, but if you park in the surface lot on the other end of the block on Selby look for the "Blair Arcade Tenants" entrance, they validate. But I always find street parking that's closer.

Yelp
The coffee and pastries were incredible!! Service was great and the ambiance was lively and so cozy on a cold winter day. It was very busy on a Saturday morning but still a great time. Great place to get some work done on a laptop!

Yelp
I'm on a mission to visit all the coffee shops in my area and Nina's Coffee is one of my new favorites! When you first walk in it can be a little cramped (you order right inside the door) but your attention is immediately turned to the charming architecture and buzz of conversation. I love a busy coffee shop with good aura, and can see myself getting a lot done here. I stopped in on Sunday afternoon and ordered an Iced Neighborhood. The coffee was delicious and the subtle cinnamon aftertaste was chefs kiss! Nina's is officially added to my list of third spaces and I'm already planning a weekday visit

Yelp
Cute coffee spot! Usually a line, but the workers gets through it fast - and are nice. The coffee is good and they have yummy breakfast options - the breakfast burrito was really good!! Lots of inside seating - more expansive space, as well as tables outside. Fun spot!
google avatar

Katerina R.

Yelp
As a visitor traveling to Minnesota, I would definitely recommend this to other visitors! I absolutely loved this area and the coffee shop itself was stunning and so unique inside, with people chatting, working, and playing chess! There is a lot of space for seating, so you are likely able to get a spot. I rate it a 4 because they did not have housemade syrups for their coffees, so I did not get one. I instead just got the cranberry scone, and this was one of the BEST scones I've ever had. So so delicious with the crumbs of dates inside, and very tasty! Highly recommend purchasing their desserts/treats.
google avatar

Yelp
The breakfast sandwich here is very good. It's not like any other, it has eggs, bacon, and even apples. The coffee is good. They have a very wide variety of of beverage options from kombucha to tea to coffee. Service is very nice. I ordered I drink with regular milk instead of oat, they messed up the order so they remade it. But they gave us both drinks and only charged us for one. Ambiance is incredible. It's a such a nice dim area. Very busy though if you don't like that

Yelp
Charming ambiance and fun location in Cathedral Hill, unfortunately can't make up for unfriendly baristas, bland coffee and busy/crowded cafe. Parking is also a challenge, with street parking your only option. Give yourself plenty of time to find a spot if you're meeting folks.
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
Not a great espresso shot. The cortado had way too much cream in it as well. But the staff was nice and it was a warm environment to hang out in.
google avatar

Maggie H.

Yelp
Stopped here for a bit to meet a colleague and had a nice experience. Staff were very friendly and my drink was good. A few options to find a seat at, very old school with hard to find parking - a nice place!
google avatar

JJ T.

Yelp
Great place with good history, coffee and pastries. It's busy with a fun atmosphere. If you want to study or meet up with a friend, this a the spot.
google avatar

Andrea K.

Yelp
Learned today that it's pronounced NINE-A not NEENA. Apparently it's rumored that it was a brothel back in the day and some say her ghost still haunts the coffee shop.
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
The last few times I stopped at Nina's over the last week or so they were closed. Open sign is lit up; cafe dark and void of customers including today - Sunday, Dec. 22. Web site says 'No we're not closed.' No signage on the front door explaining what's going on? If you know what's going on please let Nina's current/past customer know.
google avatar

Kelsey D.

Yelp
This was a great coffee shop to try with friends! Nina's is in Cathedral Hill and in an older building so it has all the charm. I got a vanilla latte and our out of town friends loved the lattes. The drinks came out quickly and it was a good place to sit and chat for awhile. I thought the drinks were comparable to other coffee shops and there was plenty of street parking outside. I'll be back to try some more drinks
google avatar

Kaitlyn K.

Yelp
Nina's is a cute neighborhood coffee shop that leans into a bit of vintage and new! The Madame Nina and Neighborhood drinks are two of their unique lattes that I've tried so far and they did not disappoint! While I wish the drink menu was a bit more extensive, they have the basics and a few specialty drinks, all of which have been mastered. As far as food goes, pastries are in a glass case with gluten free options from Sift on top of the case. The banana bread was alright but nothing notable. Syrups are Monin so I usually feel safe enough to order flavors. Nina's is already becoming one of my neighborhood spots for coffee, work, or just hanging out!
google avatar

Elsa R.

Yelp
Love it here! Lots of spots to post up at. Really cool decor. Pretty spacious. coffee is bomb. Kind staff. All in all great spot!
google avatar

Paul B.

Yelp
We really wanted to check this spot out. But 15 seconds after entering, the noise was overwhelming.
google avatar

Anushka M.

Yelp
Such a cute and cozy space! Nina's has a ton of room to grab a table and get work done. Their drink menu has both classic items and several specialty drinks. I got "The Neighborhood" iced which is caramel, cinnamon syrup and oat milk. It is so delicious and sweet! Sometimes changing to alternative milks changes the flavor, but this drink automatically comes with oat milk which I love because you can tell it compliments the syrups and espresso so well. They had yummy looking pastries I didn't try but it gives more motivation to come back. I also love the single table up the stairs that overlooks the rest of the cafe. I'm sure it's a popular spot but I'd hope to sit there one day! Also they validate parking!!
google avatar

Erin V.

Yelp
Any coffee place that i can get a bougarts and amazing coffee together can have my money! I don't get to St Paul often but if and when i do this is going to be my caffeine coffee place!!
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
Was in the area Sunday mid-morning early afternoon having brunch and stumbled across Nina's. Cute neighborhood historic coffee shop in Saint Paul. It was packed which I'm not surprised it was a gorgeous MN day. My friend and I waited about 10 minutes before being helped. The menu wasn't so greatly displayed, but once you got up to the counter you could see it. The gentlemen who ended up helping us was friendly. Super nice and chill as well. My coffee was good. I saw they have a variety of iced teas and definitely will be returning for one of those soon.
google avatar

Nakita K.

Yelp
Love this historical little corner coffee shop. It has a very historic vibe to it and they make great coffee. I can always appreciate when the foam and pour on my coffee is done well and they definitely have the skill here. Don't be fooled by the photos in this Yelp page about food, however! Usually it is only what ever they have on stock which is usually only bakery goods such as banana breads or cakes, bagels, etc. We came here thinking there might be food options, but they don't have a full menu, so heads up! they are super kind and it is a great place to stop in for a hot beverage not too far from the city! Great place to enjoy and get a feel for this historic spot in St Paul!

Julie A.

Yelp
Delicious coffee, pastries and awesome and friendly service. Comfortable seating and cool decor and music.
google avatar

Brooke I.

Yelp
A nice coffee shop with good pastries, tasty drinks, and a super cool vibe. Free WiFi, plenty of outlets, and lots of seating make this a great work spot. The service was fast and friendly, even when the lines were long. Would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Caitlin L.

Yelp
Nina's is the best coffee spot in St. Paul - amazing food, great location, immaculate vibes. The espresso at Nina's is smooth and strong. This is one of few places I will order a cappuccino or latte without any additional flavors or fluff (aka sugar) because the espresso tastes so good on its own. I've tried a number of their special drinks as well - the Neighborhood is my strong favorite, but you really can't go wrong with any of them. A matcha will run you $7 but is entirely worth it. Again so smooth and so much flavor. Nina's hits it out of the park on everything they do. It can get pretty busy, so best to get there early as seating is limited inside. There are some tables outside it the weather is fair.
google avatar

Kimberly G.

Yelp
Hands down the most beautiful coffee shop I've ever been in. It's a gorgeous historic building and neighborhood. The drinks are beautiful crafted with quality roasted coffee and skilled baristas who truly understand their craft. The service was excellent and the facilities were clean. On a Sunday afternoon they still had pastries and baked goods availability to purchase, even within 2 hours of closing. This place is a beautiful hidden gem perfect for doing remote work, relaxing with friends, or creating a casual but special casual date.
google avatar

Aurah Gqunefere W.

Yelp
I love Nina's. The coffee is delicious, the baristas are all incredibly friendly, and I always get a ton of work done while I'm here. My ONLY problem is that it's not closer to me - which is a me problem, not a Nina's problem!!! Although the shop is always buzzing with people, there are so many different cozy corners to tuck yourself into with a good book, and it's still quiet enough that it's a great place to catch up with a friend or even have a zoom meeting if needed. They're always playing music, but it's never too loud (and I always enjoy it!!). They have live music every now and then too. Nina's seriously has my heart and is easily my all-around favorite coffee place in the twin cities.
google avatar

Paige O.

Yelp
I really liked Nina's! It was super cute and fun inside, a little crowded, but I guess that is what happens when the place is popular. The staff was super friendly too. I got regular drip coffee and a ham and cheese croissant, coffee was good, croissant was great! They get their beans from a local roaster, and they have really good beans. If I lived nearby, I am sure I would come here all the time! The seating in Nina's isn't ideal, feels tight and like your in the way somehow. Again, it is just such a popular busy place so not surprising.
google avatar

Alejandra C.

Yelp
Good place! I liked the coffee shop and the pastries. Service was friendly and the ambience was great.
google avatar

Jeanne S.

Yelp
Don't bother with the breakfast sandwich (over buttered and overtoasted to the point of inedible).
google avatar

Young H.

Yelp
Horrible coffee!! Nothing special about the coffee or drinks here, overpriced and rude service. The location is convenient but after tasting the coffee and special drinks I will drive my ass to a kwik trip instead of coming back here. SAVE YOUR $$$ YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
A unique coffee shop that highlights Saint Paul's historical heritage. The building itself looks like a castle. Inside, you'll find a large amount of seating that ranges from benches to tables and even a loft. (Get there early, and you'll have a chance) The coffee was roasted nicely, in my opinion. I ordered a vanilla latte to cope with some work I needed to finish, and it was great. (Not overpowered with flavor) This place tends to get busy during the weekends (0900-1200), and it will get tough to find seating. The baristas are very friendly and helpful. The volume level was quiet to moderate. No music is playing, and it is pure conversation.
google avatar

Chassidie L.

Yelp
Nina's is definitely one of my TOP coffee spots. From the aesthetic to the drinks this place should be on every coffee lovers list. Located on Cathedral Hill is this historic coffee café. The interior of the café is just too die for! It gives 1920's ambiance with a modern flare. Walking in, you'll be greeted with a delicious smell of coffee and probably a line to order. Don't be worried though, the line goes by fast and the drinks come out even faster! I don't think I waited more than 2 minutes for my drink. I got a seasonal fall latte, brown sugar maple w/ oat milk, ($5.50). You have to get it with oat milk, it was probably one of the best lattes I have ever had!! A great balance of sweet and bitter. I will definitely be back to try more drinks!
google avatar

Beth I.

Yelp
Great space, very cool local coffee shop. It was walking distance from where we were staying on Summit Ave and we enjoyed our breakfast and our coffee!
google avatar

Beautiful G.

Yelp
This cafe is so cute! The food and coffee was really good and the environment was so nice. The tables were a bit dirty but it seemed busy so we didn't mind. Would definitely recommend for a date or just for some breakfast and coffee.
google avatar

Al K.

Yelp
If the vibe you're looking for is something to post on "The Gram" then look no further. Grab your carrhart beanies and order up that flavorful latte. That being said, every other person will be doing the same so be prepared for a wait! It's probably worth it though cause you'll get some mad likes on the social media. Cappuccino 7.5/10.
google avatar

Brenna R.

Yelp
A quaint coffee shop on Cathedral Hill. The interior of this place is darling and transports you to somewhere other than Minnesota. The staff is kind and attentive The chocolate croissant was delicious but their coffee was just okay...I'll be back to try other drinks, I wasn't thrilled with their mocha. Bonus points for having a self-serve water spigot near the coffee pickup!

Amy S.

Yelp
Ehh. I had a cold brew that was bitter, even with the whisper of cream that was added to it. I'm not sure if they handle roasting on-site or not, so I won't speak to anything on that end of the process. Parking was a bit wild (though, to be fair, all of Summit can be tough to park on or at least park close.) Pretty space, nice enough people, but as far as the bean juice goes, I wouldn't go out of my way to go back.
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
Lovely coffee shop in St Paul's historic Selby/Summit area. Cozy-hip environment with lots of intimate areas for conversation over coffee. Outside tables were busy so we sat inside. My chair was a church pew which worked well to host my purse and computer bag. It was a bit loud in there but not so loud you couldn't hear your colleague. It was fun to be in a vibrant place after working alone in my home office for so many months. Saw a few solo folks taking advantage of the WiFi. Also saw a puppy waiting with its owner for a coffee to go. After you've enjoyed your coffee, take a short walk into the building. It's absolutely beautiful with exposed brick and even a waterfall. Ring the doorbell of The Coven next door and get a tour of an amazing co-work space for women entrepreneurs.
google avatar

Dominik D.

Yelp
This is also a plug for a fine outlet: https://twincities.eater.com/maps/best-coffee-shop-minneapolis-st-paul-twin-cities But Nina's absolutely deserves to be on this list. The space must have been an old bank or bureau because the architecture is beautiful. They decorated the interior in a great way too. To say nothing of the coffee, my cold brew had subtle notes and a bold finish.
google avatar

Robyn L.

Yelp
This place is definitely one of a kind with awesome drinks. I love the beauty of the building- old town st Paul but with updated inspiration. I worked from here one afternoon and it was dreamy. Great classic drinks and specialty drinks. If you're looking for a spot in St. Paul for coffee this should be your first look!

Odalis M.

Yelp
Cute location and the inside looks just as cute. The coffee was good and the barista was helpful when helping me choose.

Josie J.

Yelp
Nina's Cafe has been my favorite cafe in the twin cities for over a decade. The space is gorgeous, the drinks are great, and the baristas are incredible. I actually wrote a paper on the interior design when I was in college! Its a great space to get work done. Another thing is that the people are so nice. My bike got stolen today outside the shop and the staff was so helpful and kind. I cant thank them enough for how they helped me through that. It sucks my bike was stolen, but thinking about how kind everyone was makes me feel so much better.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
I have now been here several times for client meetings, and I have all good things to say minus the fact that sometimes it gets so busy there are no places to sit but that just means everyone loves it as much as I do! They have oat, almond, and coconut milk so good for vegans! Very cozy atmosphere!
google avatar

Hannah O.

Yelp
Nina's is such a cute little spot. Staff was ridiculously nice, they have some skus of organic, fair trade coffee - not sure if those are used in all their coffee but that same small coffee roaster is used throughout which is fun. I tried their medium roast & it was very smooth, not bitter at all!! I ended up getting an americano, they frothed the almond milk I added to it & I asked for cinnamon powder on top. So great! Will be back!

Yelp
I have been here a few times when in St Paul and was in need for a coffee or a pastry. This place is very popular with the locals. Any time I come here, it is busy. It is in an old building and has a good rustic vibe to it. There is plenty of room to sit and read, work or talk when enjoying your coffee, so I would say that this is a reliable spot to co-work or meet some friends for a coffee. What I have found underwhelming is the coffee. I have had cold brews as well as espressos, and its good, but not that great, sort of meh. The pastries are let down. I have tried a few things there and the pastries are oversized, but lacking in quality in my opinion. I don't consider this place to be an excellent coffee destination, but unlike other coffee shops that are often cramped, this place is large and is a very good place to hang out.
