Somerville’s Nine Bar Espresso Expands to Boston | Eater Boston

"The original Davis Square location debuted in August 2015 and established the menu foundations now replicated downtown: beans from local roaster Gracenote, pastries sourced from a well-regarded Salem bakery, and a selection of Camellia Sinensis teas. Erick Vlassidis was part of the opening team for this shop, and Edward Green is set to manage the Somerville cafe going forward; the outlet is one of a small group of sibling neighborhood cafes." - Dana Hatic

Google
Wonderful latte with oat milk! Take out from walk-up window only, open most days from 8-3. Some bagel and pastry choices. My favorite coffee shop, it’s in busy Davis Square.

Lily B.

Google
Really wish they would re-open to allow patrons to sit down inside to enjoy their drink/pastry (but no laptops), especially now that it’s getting chillier. It was beautiful inside. It was what a café should be, and less like a drive-thru since the pandemic.

Justin C.

Google
Nice little coffee shop in Davis Square that we found when it was highlighted on channel 5’s Chronicle show. We got in just before the place was closing on a Sunday afternoon. We ordered a regular coffee and a vanilla latte but we’d like to come back and try some of the food offerings like the avocado sandwich which sounds tasty. Overall, the prices are on par with any coffee shop in Boston, friendly service and and the atmosphere is more catered to on-the-go traffic. We’ll be back!

Matthew B.

Google
We love stopping at 9 bar when doing any outing in Davis! Our favorite is the lavender latte, with half sweetener. It’s consistently great!

Andi B.

Google
Friend recommended I try it out. Their cortado was delicious! Only downside - was only a window serving while I was hoping for sit down. I blame my friend. Service was friendly and quick!

Gayeong S.

Google
Lovely cafe to stop by on a leisurely weekend morning walk. There was quite a line when I got there, but it moved fast. I was impressed by the richness of my cortado, and the chocolate croissant was a delightful treat.

Google
I came to Davis square to get a latte from this shop. But I didn't know that today,,, this shop is for only to-go. 🥹 The staff was very kind. He recommended another coffee shop where I can sit. But I just ordered a flat white from this shop. it was an excellent choice! Rich coffee with creamy milk :)

Google
Nine Bar Espresso delivers a great coffee experience. The quality of their coffee is exceptional, making it a go-to spot for coffee enthusiasts. The rich flavor and expertly crafted brews ensure a satisfying and enjoyable visit.

Yelp
Nine Bar Espresso is a little takeout coffee window in Davis Square. It's right outside the Davis T station so it's convenient to stop by for a quick drink. I've tried them on a couple occasions and would say their drinks are hit or miss. Today's nitro cold brew tasted more sour than smooth. Their Iced Mochas are pretty tasty though. Their plain croissant would've tasted 1000% better warmed up since they do have quite some flaky layers inside. But they serve them cold unfortunately. Also the cashier was grumpy which is not the experience you want first thing in the morning. Wouldn't come out of the way to visit, but if you're already there it gets the coffee job done.

Yelp
When I lived in Davis, coming here was my favorite part of my day. Now I work in Davis, I come to work early to stop by. I do wish their hours were longer.
google avatar

Richard M.

Yelp
The cold brew was a bit strong for my taste. Some people might prefer that but not this guy lol. The oat milk combination was not the best for this particular coffee but not terrible either. The cashier lady was pleasant and friendly which made for pleasant experience. The ambiance appeared laid back and vintage.

Yelp
You will have to order through a window, aside from that this place has kind and amazingly speedy service. Nine Bar Espresso offers your typical coffee drinks (latte, macchiato) but when asking the man through the counter what his favorite/most popular drink is, he said "the matcha latte". And so, a matcha latte I drank. And drank... and drank some more. The creamy richness of the oat milk paired with a mild matcha flavor was perfect for my taste buds and stomachs on an autumn Sunday. For any soon-to-be Davis square/Medford/Somerville/Cambridge residents who are looking for a perfectly good/speedy/on-the-go/good quality coffee stop - Nine Bar Espresso is IT!

Yelp
Cute coffee window- every time I've ordered I've had a good experience and good coffee!
google avatar

Yangsoo S.

Yelp
Love their lavender/ hazelnut latte!! Casually order/grab from their tiny window . I believe they stopped doing the table service since COVID. Highly recommend and hoe you enjoy, support small businesses

Yelp
This has been my go-to place for coffee in Somerville! They're conveniently located in Davis Square, right across from the Red Line stop, making for an easy pick me up whenever I head into the city. Though they only do window service and the crowd surrounding it can sometimes look discouraging, service is incredibly fast. Not to mention, their coffee is some of the best I've had in the area! I can't speak for their food options, but they seem to be very popular, so I don't doubt they're good as well!
google avatar

Ariana C.

Yelp
One of the best places to get coffee in Somerville hands down! Always happy to wait in line for their coffee! They're also so nice and helpful!
google avatar

Richard P.

Yelp
Quick coffee run through a "walk-thru" window allows you to get your much needed caffeine boost on the way to work as it's conveniently located next to the Red Line. Don't miss out on some of the pastries! The apricot ginger scone was a good sweetener to neutralize the strong macchiato. Good portion size about the size of an open hand.
google avatar

Yelp
PLEASE GET YOUR MATCHA HERE!!! This to-go only coffeehouse has one of the BEST matcha lattes you can get in the greater Boston area. I am a Asian-American from California who is EXTREMELY picky about matcha lattes. The matcha is high quality and is blended so smoothly where you can see no lumps in your cup. I ordered an iced matcha latte with oat milk and it was so smooth. The people at the door are always so kind and patient with everyone. The place is dog-friendly too! The servers give out treats if the owners allow it. The drinks come out very quickly. The cafe is also right in front of the Red line, so it is a great place to pick up your drinks on the go. I also saw pastries and for breakfast sandwiches, which I need to get next time!

Sylvia J.

Yelp
Great coffee. If you are lucky enough to try their simple breakfast sandwiches - do it! There usually is a line but it goes by fast.
google avatar

Anna F.

Yelp
Seems like they hired some nice new staff. Service was friendly and quick from the window. Recyclable container and paper straw were cool. My iced coffee was balanced- not bitter. I don't take milk or sugar or anything so I appreciate a good quality bean, which this was.
google avatar

Jihye S.

Yelp
I was in Somerville for a few days and was looking for some espresso macchiato. As of February 2022, it was doing only take out at the window, under a very safe condition (I appreciate any businesses doing this so much!! Thank you!!). Their beans are a little bit too edgy (sour) for my taste in macchiato, but I liked it better as a cappuccino. They also have really nice croissants and breakfast sandwiches. Overall a very nice place that I'll definitely visit again if I'm in the area again. (I usually give 5 stars if I will make effort to go out of my way ..I'm not sure if I will drive extra few miles to go here, but I appreciate local businesses doing their best during this time!)

Yelp
Serving locally roasted beans from Gracenote. Love their nitro cold brew. Dark chocolate and amazing when paired with a levain cookie. Had to pass up any milk based drinks cuz they only had califa, but would love to try it again when oatly is back in stock.

Mary M.

Yelp
I love you guys and the iced latte is always amazing, but I paid a lot for this bagel with cream cheese (and left a tip) very disappointing. leaving three stars for the espresso

Chris S.

Yelp
I was disappointed for a shop named after barista trivia. The coffee flavor was weak and the foam was nonexistent. No indoor seating as the pictures showed. An OK stop if you live next door or use the T station but definitely not a destination.
google avatar

Craig Z.

Yelp
I don't usually rate coffee shops when I have only visited once, but really enjoyed my drink here--cortado, whole milk--service was knowledgeable, and thought the price was great. They were brewing Gracenote, which I believe is in Western Mass. The espresso was great: very juicy, medium roast. Milk texture was great. They serve cortados in a 4 oz cup, right up to the top, so may be a little stronger than some people are used to, but it was a very nice drink. As of last weekend, they were only serving out of the window. There was a little overhand that provided some protection from the rain that day, but definitely something to know before heading there.

Yelp
There are many coffee shops espresso bars and pastry shops in Summerville, but none quite like Nine Bar Espresso. This is a place not to miss when you are Davis Square, and I make the track all the way from Cambridge just to have their amazing concoctions. Way better than JP licks or your standard coffee shop for hot chocolate or pick me up no matter the season or time of day. (I never understood why people went to an ice cream shop for over priced watered down hot drinks. Folks, just walk around the corner and in 1 min you will be in sweet chocolate and coffee and tea bliss at Nine Bar Espresso!) The customer service is amazing Santi and Nick took care of me multiple times and they are truly a joy especially making coffee art even in a to-go espresso or coffee or hot chocolate cup. My go-to are their hot chocolate and espresso drinks, where they make their own custom hot chocolate which is extra rich and can be customized to whatever the customer wants in terms of oat milk almond milk heavy milk and anything in between. They have very healthy egg and cheese and avocado options as well as your typical egg and meat and cheese with fresh pastries and homemade delicious items. My partner loves the chocolate croissant. During covid-19 times the pickup window can be very busy, so make sure to put your order in but they are very quick and always get things done within 2 to 3 minutes, with a smile which keeps me coming back. They take extra precautions and have Tap to Pay/Mobile Pay with an option for a printed or email receipt, and are very conscious of trying to assist the customer while keeping everyone healthy. During pre- covid-19 times, the yogurt parfait is a must... Right now i recommend their healthy sandwich options, egg or otherwise if you want a delicious meal, or a home-made pastry that is large, filling, homemade delicious, and the best price around. Let's be honest, it is not just their friendly demeanor, but really the delicious coffee drinks espresso drinks chocolate drinks pastries and healthy sandwich options that make this place one of a kind. Thank you Santi and Nick for making Nine Bar Espresso my favorite place in all of Cambridge and Boston when it comes to breakfast or lunch options (or a chocolate/ caffeine treat any time of day!) Go check it out!! You won't be disappointed. (Remember to "Support Local" and tip extra, their low prices with no COVID-19 recovery surcharge and 5 star service deserve extra appreciation!) Why trust me? I've traveled from California to Malta, Italy to Thailand, Costa Rica to Canada - and can say Nine Bar Espresso is unique in their rich flavors, customer experience, and delicious delicacy style offerings that just make you want to return!

Helen H.

Yelp
Love starting my day off with Nine Bar. Their coffees are delicious and have such flavorful taste. Perfectly sweet as well. I really enjoy their iced vanilla latte. Their iced matcha lattes are pretty good as well! They're also really dog friendly and offer dog treats :)
google avatar

Anarie S.

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee spots near the Davis T. It is located directed across from the T exit. It's literally the best place to get coffee to go. Actually you can only get to go because you cannot sit in :) This coffee spot is literally just a window you can order from. They have a small selection of baked goods but I really just go for their coffee and take it either to the square or wherever I'm going.
google avatar

Gary W.

Yelp
Popped into Nine Bar Espresso while visiting Tufts. Saw the great Yelp reviews and it sounded like a perfect place for awesome latte and snacks, and a quick delicious breakfast. It did not disappoint! Loved the espresso, latte, and their pastries. Great service, good pricing and delicious food. 5-stars!
google avatar

Gauravi P.

Yelp
I'm currently sitting in this cafe drinking my usual order, one latte with almond milk. I'm looking out the beautifully clear window at the convenient bar seat thinking, "What a great Saturday." Any cafe that can get me to feel that way at 8 am on a Saturday morning with one perfectly made latte is pretty OK in my book. Cost is high though for this feeling and latte. A regular latte is $4.25 and with almond milk an extra $1. I think I will be sticking with Cafe Nero for my regular coffee because the price is significantly cheaper. But, I wouldn't mind stopping by here once in awhile. There's our door seating as well! So if you have a pup, grab a coffee and enjoy it on the cafe tables outside.
google avatar

Salome H.

Yelp
Fun experience and great coffee! Love the grab and go concept that still feels personal !
google avatar

Colin P.

Yelp
I buy the Grace Note coffee beans from here. If i'm in a rush I'll get a cup of the drip coffee too. It's the tastiest cup of coffee you'll find and a charming shop. It doesn't even have WiFi which to me is a unique differentiator. Less time on electronics is a good thing! I also picked up this travel mug the other day which is also 5 stars. Keeps the coffee hot and is easy to drink out of.
google avatar

Nino E.

Yelp
Theres a window by the sidewalk to place an order. I don't think they have indoor seating. I had a shot of espresso. The barista who took my order was pleasant! This is only my second espresso ever, but it did taste slightly better than the other one. Im currently on a mission to find who has the best espresso in davis square, then Boston, then USA, then the world.
google avatar

Amanda G.

Yelp
I'm so glad I picked an apartment within walking distance of nine bar because this has quickly become one of my favorite places in the neighborhood. The coffee is always excellent, I've also bought their ground espresso and it didn't disappoint. Their pastries are also fresh and delicious, I recommend the kouign amann. The only qualm I have with nine bar is that the line outside can be slightly confusing--every time I visit I think it would be helpful to add arrows or something showing which way the line is moving! At least while I wait on the confusing line there is often a cute dog or two there.
google avatar

Cristina R.

Yelp
Love this European-style coffee shop right in the heart of Davis Square! It's so easy to swing by and grab something on my way to the bus or train. Even when there's a line to order, the service is pretty quick. I usually get a flat white with oat milk, which is what I get at coffee shops when I'm visiting London. The drip coffee and cold brew are also great ways to get your buzz on. The pastries in the glass case are so pretty! The almond croissant is full of sweet, nutty paste and topped with toasted almonds. Nine Bar almost makes going to work (or at least the commute) pleasurable.
google avatar

Bailee P.

Yelp
Very cute little walk up window to order at. I just got an iced coffee but my brother got a breakfast sandwich and said it was delicious. A great way to start the morning.
google avatar

Lara W.

Yelp
The staff is so friendly and the drinks are great. Highly recommend! Also just outside of the T station so you can drink coffee and wait for your friends.
google avatar

Lisa B.

Yelp
2.75 for an awesome drip coffee from Guatemala! I didn't anything else, but wanted to leave a review because of the extremely friendly service and the awesome location in Davis square! They had two different roast options for drip, both of which were pretty light. The barista was knowledgeable and happily shared about the roasts, which makes my coffee lovers heart happy. The location itself seemed like a good place to stop and do work, though a little small. I wish I had more time to hang out, but I was on the go!
google avatar

Valeria S.

Yelp
I think this is my favorite coffee shop in Cambridge. The espresso based drinks are incredibly good! The espresso is strong and rich and it is prepared incredibly well! The best drink is probably the latte both hot and iced. The cappuccino and cortado is also really good and both strong. I wish all coffee shops would train their barristas like Nine Bar does. Aside from their really well crafted espresso drinks, the place is really cute and cozy. They have a bar like table against a window where it's pretty comfortable to read a book or people watch. During the months when ti's pleasant being outside, they have outside seating which is really nice. The people are really nice and patient as you think about what you want to order and also in explaining you the coffee selection. Overall if you are looking for great coffee in the area, Nine Bar Espresso is definitely the way to go.

John M.

Yelp
I don't normally write reviews but this place has excellent coffee and very good prices.

V. L.

Yelp
This is my absolute favorite coffee place in the Davis/Teele square area. The espresso is always so good. My usual order is an Iced Americano (which I would def recommend) and a bagel with cream cheese. Their cream cheese flavors are amazing-- the jalapeño is the best. I believe they buy their pastries from a local bakery, which I really appreciate & all the pastries I've tried are unbelievably good (scones, croissants, danishes, everything). There's no seating, but there's a park right down the street, and it's the perfect place to bring your coffee & breakfast. The line outside can be a little confusing sometimes, but it's still worth it. Pictured: a bacon egg and cheese on a crossaint & an iced latte.
google avatar

Tanya S.

Yelp
Great coffee and tea shop. Really delicious espresso drinks and tea. Lovely little treats. I keep coming back for their cappuccinos which are just... perfect. Balanced, delicious, beautiful. The only underwhelming thing is the cold brew coffee. Otherwise my favorite coffee stop.
google avatar

Karina G.

Yelp
Just damn good coffee - excellent lattes and mochas. Plus a yummy ham and cheese croissant - AND genuinely friendly staff! Thank you!
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
Needed my morning caffeine kick and I happen to be around the area so I decided to come in to this place. It's quite small yet cozy, and filled with smiling faces. Planned on getting a latte since it's cold out, but it was pretty warm inside (i hate winter) so I decided to opt for their nitro cold brew. And oh my goodness, best nitro cold brew I've had in a while. I wanted to do my usual splash of almond milk in my coffee, but this was super smooth and tasty on its own I didn't want to ruin the taste. It was perfect. Would definitely come back to try more!!!! Also, their instagram is so cute and friendly. Props to treating your baristas well, Nine Bar!

Santiago C.

Yelp
If you're looking for a quality cup of coffee, look no further than nine bar espresso. Right off the t station at Davis square, and wait time is only like 2 min at most lol. Also the people who work there are very attractive but I am too scared to ask them to be friends with me.
google avatar

Abby L.

Yelp
Cute shop with great staff. I got a mocha to go and a few pastries. The pastries were fresh and delicious and the coffee was great. I've just returned from a trip in Europe and had been craving good coffee. Nine Bar Espresso definitely met and exceeded my expectations. The staff is incredibly friendly. All smiles and great service. I'll definitely come back!
google avatar

Ali H.

Yelp
Hands down the mouse sophisticated espresso drinks around Davis square and beyond. I still struggle to find anything that compares. Too bad they don't have indoor seating still. In summer you could just sit in Davis square and it was nice. But winter will be a different story.
google avatar

Joe S.

Yelp
This was my second visit to this coffee shop. Last time, i just ordered an espresso and i couldn't finish it. Believe me, coming from Europe, I am used to strong espresso and Turkish coffee but i thought maybe it was a bad day. Today, I went back in the morning for a Cappuccino and it was very light and rich in milk. I think i don't like the roasting procedure used in their beans as I could taste still some green beans flavors. However, the place itself goes well within the vibes of Davis sq, 'Hipstery' and modern. Prices are in the line with Davis area!

Yelp
Quaint and simple craft coffee bar in one of the coolest parts of the Boston area. I'm lucky to live a few minute's walk from Nine Bar and I do find myself here pretty often. There are a number of other great coffee shops in walking distance, but when I'm looking for a quick in-and-out coffee stop, this is where I always gravitate. When it comes to my order, I'm a creature of habit and I usually find myself walking out with a nitro cold brew. Their regular iced coffee is also fantastic. I'm admittedly a bit of a coffee snob, so it is a high compliment for me to say I would never dream of adding any kind of creamer or sweetener to the coffee here. The inside is pretty tiny, so don't expect to sit and hang unless you get really lucky. The menu is also fairly minimal, but the craftsmanship and level of detail in everything they do here is much higher than standard, so coffee lovers won't have an issue finding something they're happy with. They also have a short but overall solid tea selection if you find yourself here with a non-coffee drinker. I have never had food here, but they have a moderately-sized selection of pastries and based on visual assessment alone, everything I have seen looks quality. If you're used to upscale, artisanal espresso bars, this is the place for you.
google avatar

Audrey G.

Yelp
This is the place I miss the most after moving away from Davis Square. They make the platonic ideal of a cortado. Always so smooth, so bright and rich in flavor, served piping hot in a whisky glass with a perfect leaf. I'd come several times a week during graduate school for it. Now that I'm in the Midwest, I have to arm wrestle with baristas ("just a little more milk, no a little less") to get a shadow of the thing.
google avatar

Eric T.

Yelp
Not a bad place to stop in for coffee while perusing Davis Square. I used Yelp to locate the nearest coffee place that wasn't Starbucks, and came up with Nine Bar Expresso. Excellent customer service, pretty good coffee & snacks, as well as a decent amount of outdoor seating. The venue is setup to cater to more of the crowd that gets coffee to go. This was evident in seeing the limited amount of interior seating (about 5-6 chairs), plus a smaller bar area that is without chairs. The barista indicated that there isn't any WiFi here, so you'll have to suck it up and use a substitute if you think that you'll get any online work done here. I'm certain that this is by design in order to keep patrons steadily moving in & out of the coffee shop without getting too comfortable. Not a bad place when in Davis Square.
google avatar

Brendan B.

Yelp
Some of the best coffee in The Boston area! I got the flat white and loved it. Coffee snobs test it out! Come here for a quick coffee or takeout. Seating is very limited but I think that's intentional. Interior is cool and my service was friendly. No Wi-Fi. Not much seating. Just good coffee and pastries!
google avatar

Jeffrey R.

Yelp
Busy little coffee place near the train and bus stations, no public restroom, small area for seating, breakfast sandwiches are a little pricey 6.00 and up , coffee blends are magical.. they are super nice and fast.
google avatar

Ruth C.

Yelp
We stayed in Cambridge for a week close to Davis Square and found this amazing gem right across the T. The coffee and pastries are amazing and the place is very cozy inside with some outdoor seating as well. I like the nitro cold brew and appreciate that they use and sell Gracenote coffee. The morning glory muffin and bread are tasty, and the lemon pound cake is very nice and moist. I wish there was a coffee shop like this close to home back in the bay area. There's also a star rewards program so after 5 visits, you can get $1 off. Nice perk! The only weird thing to me is that soy milk is cheaper than almond milk. Why not charge the same price? It can't be that much of a difference... and providing both options at the same price would help those of us who can't have milk feel better. What if someone is allergic to both soy and regular milk? Then they have to pay a small premium for almond milk? Seems weird.
google avatar

Narbeh N.

Yelp
Small local coffee shop in Somerville. Great lattes and I found my favorite 7 layer bar here!
google avatar

Marceline V.

Yelp
The first thing I noticed today and loved is the amount of natural light that is in this small but neat coffee shop. I ordered a flat white with almond milk and a slice of blueberry cake. The flat white was smooth and the espresso was delicious. The blueberry cake was super moist and perfect with my drink. The seating is limited but comfortable. I'd recommend and would visit again
google avatar

Sarah Marie C.

Yelp
Nitro cold brew on tap and almond milk! No longer has a public bathroom. Wish I'd known. I would have gotten coffee at one of the many other options in Davis.
