Where to Drink a Guinness in the Indianapolis Area This Winter | Eater

"Opened a decade ago on trendy Massachusetts Avenue, this proper Irish pub was the first Indy effort of the O’Bryan family. Jerry O’Bryan wanted to recreate an authentic pub experience serving traditional Irish fare — a lively atmosphere of Celtic jigs where Guinness is poured by the pint. Enjoy one with corned beef and cabbage or Irish whiskey pepper steak before walking to the nearby Murat Theatre or other cultural venues." - Brian Garrido

Great atmosphere. Fun collection of stools for seating (although we chose a booth with seat backs for our old backs). Amazing pork tenderloin sandwich and the potato "chips" hit the spot, as did the draft Magners cider. Will definitely be back!

Google
What a fun Irish Pub with great food & service. We had the Shepherds Pie (yummy), Fish & Chips (crispy & flaky inside), a side of their delicious coleslaw, & finished with the scrumptious Bread Pudding. The wait staff were courteous, efficient, & checked in on us regularly. We like how they offer full- & half-sized entrees. We had the 1/2 portions & it was plenty. Highly recommended!

Google
The food was absolutely incredible...Corned beef, and cabbage egg rolls, Irish Pizza..and Nine Irish Red Ale. Raven was an amazing server, and the atmosphere was great with live music from Highland Reign.

This is an absolutely fantastic spot for food and atmosphere. It has a nice collection of beers and drinks as well as a menu that has something for everyone. Everything on the menu sounded so good that we had a hard time choosing. I went with the shepherd's pie (actually cottage pie since it has beef instead of lamb) which was one of the best I have ever had. There is a lot of beef and gravy in there, so come hungry if you are getting a full order. The bread pudding is phenomenal so do yourself a favor and save room for it. Despite how busy it was, the service was fast and friendly. In conclusion: Don't miss this place. Prices are reasonable for what you get. It's worth every penny of your hard earned money.

Google
Great place for pub food! We can make a meal of the appetizers ~ they're so tasty. We really enjoy the Irish Nachos ~ served hot with generous toppings. We've also tried the Goat Cheese Fritters, which are amazing ~ berry sauce with them is the perfect complement. Cozy atmosphere with lots of fun decor. Excellent customer service.

Google
A five star meal in every way. We were among few others in the restaurant just after it opened on a Sunday. Service was friendly and pleasant all the way though. The pub vibe of the place is very cozy, large windows adding light to an otherwise dark environment with old Irish beer signs and memorabilia. I was happy they had a cider on tap, Zappy by Rhinegeist out of Cincinnati, while my husband had their house Irish Red and really enjoyed it. He ordered the bangers and mash, while I had a spring special item, a spinach salad with a mustard bacon dressing and a lunch portion of grilled chicken. Seriously delicious. It was different in an awesome way. I had to order the bread pudding for dessert and I am glad I did, because it was warm, homey, and delicious. We left with full bellies and extreme satisfaction from our entire meal experience.

Yelp
Our server was very attentive and helpful, and she was also friendly with the children. I ordered the shepherd's pie, while my daughter had a custom salad made up with some of her favorite ingredients, including cheese, tomatoes, and crackers. For our appetizer, we shared the fried pickles, which were the best I've ever had. They serve them with a sauce called "the bomb sauce," and it is amazing. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
After literally missing lunch while going through buying a car I was very glad to find Nine Irish Brothers to unwind from the 5 hr process. I was dying of hunger and was going to go for sheperds pie when I noticed they also had seafood shepherds pie. I decided to give that a try. Due to being so hungry an eating lunch at was now 4 pm I also added a pizza appetizer. The pizza was better than I would have expected. All the food came out quickly and the service was great. As a bonus they had plenty of tvs to watch Purdue beat Oregon in basketball. The seafood shepherds pie wasn't too bad definitely different and hard to judge as I have never had nor even seen it on any other Irish places menus. Well I will definitely be returning as I get a free oil change at the car dealer in six months and my son is most likely going to Pursue in two years.

Yelp
I have to say. The food was really bad. The smithwicks was good and so were the fried green beans. But I've never ever had such dry cornbeef and cabbage. It was a healthy portion but soooo so dry. I left 3/4 of it and the server {who lacked any sort of attentiveness} wasn't observant enough to notice or ask. I asked some friends if this was their normal and they all agreed. Such a bummer.

Yelp
Was greeted quickly with a smile from Alex. She said I could sit anywhere and she'd be with me in a minute. Came back with a menu, asked for my drink. Gave me the Daily Specials and what she loved. I already wanted the tenderloin! The decoration and music make you feel like you stepped off a cobblestone street into an Irish pub. The tenderloin was huge and delicious. Give this place a try!
google avatar

Yelp
Great laid back, casual atmosphere. Service was really fast. Fish and chips was cooked well and had a good flavor. Caesar salad had fresh greens and steak that accompanied it was grilled perfectly. Would definitely recommend this place for a meal or a pint!

Yelp
Feels like an authentic Irish Pub. Friendly staff, and clean bathrooms. Live music on Friday and Saturday nights. 15 beers on tap, full bar. Possibly the BEST wings in town, but a tad pricey. They have authentic Irish food also, but the cheeseburger or breaded tenderloin are my go to.
google avatar

Yelp
Chill Irish family friendly restaurant pub. All dishes were prepared perfectly. Nothing bland or too rich. Servers are friendly and attentive. Also tried the delicious shamrock pie which is light and not too heavy, perfect for sharing after such a heavy meal.

Yelp
Got together with friends for my 50th birthday at 9IB East, yesterday. The whole experience was fantastic, and the staff really made it a banger of an event. Special thanks to bartender Sarah! Will always pick this place over any other when in town.

Yelp
Love the vibes and energy of Nine Irish! This location is just as good as the West Lafayette restaurant but tends to be less busy. Good food and appetizers, and the beer is always great.

Yelp
Fish and chips were delicious, super crispy outside perfect with their tartar sauce. The service is great staff is always ready and very friendly. Will be back to try the rest of their menu

Yelp
Great place to get away and have a good time with great food good drinks, unique atmosphere and friendly informative service. we enjoyed the fish and chips and the corn beef and cabbage. The tenderloin sandwich was awesome too. A must check out if you are in the area.

Yelp
A group of 12 of us came to Nine Irish after a football game and we had a wonderful experience. Our waitress Emily was so helpful and kind - we were a huge group on an already busy night, and she handled it gracefully. The food is delicious and the live music made the atmosphere so fun. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick beer while out Christmas shopping and was somewhat irritated, for lack of a better word. The beer was cold and tasty, as it always is. Maybe it was the fact that it was still daylight or that I was still sober that I was generally irritated. It is always good to see people enjoying themselves with a pint in the afternoon. However, listening to one of the servers cussing at the top of her lungs while the regulars sitting at the bar were trying to yell louder to get noticed and attention may have been a bit much for me. All of this while holiday music was playing underneath. I watched said loud server drink at least 3 beers in my time and maybe that contributes to the overall vibe. I always enjoy 9 Irish Brothers. I really do. I will just make sure to not come by in the middle of regulars' hour.

Yelp
The food and Ambiance was amazing but what really made my husband's graduation dinner was our server Madi ! She was genuine and kind and made us feel really special. Thank you Madi !

Yelp
Really enjoyed the ambiance, decor & music. Bartender was very friendly & helpful. Had an excellent glass of red blend. The mussels were good and plentiful but the sauces was not a flavorful as I would have liked. The accompanying bread was very good, with a nice crunch. Chicken sandwich was a good size but husband wasn't crazy about it, a bit stringy" he said-whatever that means. His chips were excellent but way too salty for my tastes. He loved them. Regretfully, the Irish Cream cheesecake was unavailable.

Jo D.

Yelp
Fried Pickles were so good. I ordered the (1/2 order) guineas stew. It was served hot and delicious with a huge dollop of mashed potatoes in the center. Very Good They have a lot on the menu many varieties. Service was good, can't remember our waiter name, though! The ambiance was fun, lots of decor for our friends, across the pond of Ireland. We will return!

Yelp
Great experience! Marvin was our server. He was the absolute best! Made us feel like family. The food was delicious. Restaurant was clean. We will be back!

Yelp
This place is really different in a good way. We had just finished a dermatology appointment for our cat at Purdue. I asked the receptionist where to go to grab a bite to eat and this was her recommendation. Having been to a few pubs in Ireland, there is a certain etiquette to be followed. First and foremost, do not sit where the regulars sit. Second, if you truly are in a pub expect one ice cube in your drink. They didn't do that here. Food was excellent. They had all the traditional Irish pub fare. It was good and fresh and hot. They do a great job at recreating the Irish pub experience. There numerous little cubby hole areas where small groups could get together and share a few libations.

Yelp
The sausage and sour kraut sandwich I got was very delicious!! Great service too!!! I'm part German and am very finicky!! This restaurant had a warm ambiance!!! Great experience!!

Yelp
This place is great. Food is still consistent after a decade, service is quick and kind. It was a little tough navigating to our table with a wheelchair but it worked out fine for us. They were accommodating for my dietary needs as well and knowledgeable.

Yelp
Excellent food, service, and location. I didn't have to wait for a table since this particular location was away from college crowds. Parking was a snap. Over the course of a few days, I came back here again and again. I have now tried the flight of beers, goat cheese fritters, fried pickles, fish and chips, chicken, corned beef and cabbage, paddy melt, and the beef stew. So good! As starters, the fried pickles and goat cheese fritters were excellent and perfectly crisped. I liked how the pickles had the perfect tang to balance the oily (but delicious) batter. The goat cheese fritters were the perfect crispy and cheesy complements to the salad and dressing. The fish and chips were also fried perfectly. The fish itself was perfectly flaky and I could not stop eating the chips (literally fried potato slices). The chicken was delicious primarily because of the gravy. The beer certainly enhanced the flavor of the gravy. Also, loved the dense and moist soda bread which soaked up the gravy. Corned beef was so moist and totally not dry. It was, hands down, the best corned beef I have ever had. The paddy melt was a great sandwich marrying the perfectly cooked and sliced beef with cheese and onion. The beef stew, while not my favorite, was hearty, delicious, and will warm you to the bones on a cold day. And the drinks on tap were all excellent. I loved trying the flight of beers as well, to tee up my next drink. My favorite was the stout. The service was excellent. We had a very nice waitress and waiter and host who were communicative and made sure we liked our food. Price seemed like a steal considering how good the food was and the portions they give. Best Irish food I've ever had. If I could give this place a 6 stars I would! Try it!!

Yelp
I enjoyed Nine Irish Brothers. It definitely rocks the Irish pub vibe, complete with Guiness... everything. Even the background music is well chosen. We split a fish and chips, which was fully up to par. As others have mentioned, the portions are very generous. Service was great - just the right mix of attentive without being assertive. Our server, Vanessa, was awesome. The prices aren't super cheap, but seemed appropriate for the sort of place and the food selection. Altogether, a definite win.
google avatar

Sherwin C.

Yelp
Decent prices and huge portions served quickly in a comfortable setting, but for me the food is only okay. The corned beef and cabbage comes with nice and tender beef that's not too salty but was a bit under seasoned. The side of cabbage is generous and nicely seasoned. The potatoes were soft and quite buttery with the right amount of herbs. The soda bread had a good flavor with dried fruit but not too sweet, and a nice slightly firm texture. The breaded pork tenderloin was served in a huge portion a a little overcooked and dry, but the flavoring of the breading was quite nice. This was served with nice fresh tomatoes, lettuce, and onion. The chips were super crispy and had a good flavor. Overall, a solid choice for Irish food that's filling and at a good price.

Larry B.

Yelp
Generally a very positive experience. Service is always excellent, ambience is fantastic. Feels like you've been transported to a pub in Dublin. I usually get the fish and chips. 9 times out of ten you can count on it to be great, but occasionally you can get an order slightly undercooked. Do yourself a favor and order it with the bomb sauce. And try a variety of Scotch. Their selection is excellent.
google avatar

Yelp
Good food and service, it's a nice and cozy place to eat out at, I would 10 out of 10 recommend

Tricia E.

Yelp
We've now enjoyed Nine Irish Brothers twice. The loaded chips are served hot and are so delicious. Our son has had the fish tacos both times we've been here and really enjoys them too. Service is warm, friendly, and efficient. Staff is attentive without "hovering."

Cindy M.

Yelp
Great food, friendly service and locally owned. Interesting story about the family. If you're looking for an excellent selection of beer or scotch you might enjoy stopping and enjoy a drink with some good Irish food. Family friendly.

Yelp
Came here with a party of 6 without a reservation on a busy Saturday, yeah that was our fault. Every table was full! The hostess seemed ticked by the amount of customers that night and took us right away to a private room that seats over 10 guests I believe. Score! The room had it's own TV (playing basketball that night), a neat Titantic themed bookshelf, and a fireplace. We waited a while for drinks so then we ordered appetizers. The fried pickles were pretty good. I ordered the fish sandwich and thought it was just ok. Mine didn't come with tartar sauce so it was pretty bland. The waiter was just so busy! He then mixed up our check with another table's and almost dismissed us before we had even paid! That would have been a pretty big mix up for the other table. Overall, I enjoyed the atmosphere, appetizers, and the prices are reasonable. I would return.

Yelp
A very nice lunch. Got together with a group of people and really enjoyed this restaurant. Everyone tried various menu items and all were satisfied. My wife loved the fish and chips. I really liked the Irish Pizza. Service was very professional and friendly staff. Good parking lot . Yes it is dark inside which adds to the pub atmosphere. Clean and well managed. Full bar. Value for the money. Large portions. Really large menu. Several of our group loved the Irish Breakfast. Private rooms are available. Keep up the great work!
google avatar

Steve R.

Yelp
Nice Irish bar not where you'd expect one to be. Drinks were good and bartender was great! A little hard to enjoy 6 small wings for $13.99 but they were tasty.

Wes K.

Yelp
Did this location enter into some kind of contest for the most uncomfortable chairs/stools/seating? I'm certain they would have won.
google avatar

Kory H.

Yelp
I love it. I tried the shepherds pie (I don't like peas) and it was good. The peas were fresh and not mushy and gross. I also love their "chips" or fries, don't remember what they call them. I got mine loaded with cheese and bacon and a side of sour cream. Yummmm
google avatar

Liz F.

Yelp
My absolute favorite restaurant of all time and one of the few things I miss about living in Indiana. Delicious food, friendly and helpful staff and a cozy atmosphere. I love both the West Lafayette and the Lafayette location (although parking is MUCH easier and convenient at the Lafayette location). You need to bring a location to Cleveland!

Randy I.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places. The service is stellar, the atmosphere is fun, and the food is delicious. I came in on Mother's Day, and even though they were really busy, they did a great job keeping up. I highly recommend!
google avatar

Jay B.

Yelp
I've never been to Ireland so I cannot speak to the authenticity of this Irish pub I can say that the atmosphere was low-key for a Saturday afternoon. Our service was friendly and prompt. Everyone enjoyed their food and drinks. No complaints. Would readily return if we were in the area. I would love to try a whiskey flight and some of the other food. Our portion size was huge, so err on the side of caution with half size meals.
google avatar

Patrick B.

Yelp
Cool atmosphere My food was ok Off duty officers next to us could not control their kid. Kinda ruined the entire deal. My bride had the Sheppard's Pie. It was disgusting to say the least. Kinda looked like canned cat food with gravy. It did not even look the picture Won't be back for sure The waitstaff was great
google avatar

Stacy O.

Yelp
We met friends here for dinner on our way from Indiana to Chicago after Christmas. On a list of many restaurant options, this one stood out for its whiskey options, though ironically, none of us ended up ordering whiskey. My husband and I arrived first and were asked if we would prefer a high-top table or a regular table. We opted for high-top, but I have to admit this became a bit of a sticking point for me. It wasn't a table we were seated at; it was a barrel. And if you stop and think about a barrel, you may realize there is no where to comfortably put your legs. I also wish they had asked if we were comfortable sitting by the stage where there was live music scheduled to begin. Ultimately, we left before the music started so it was a non-issue, but it may be worth asking guests. Wanting to catch up with our friends, it made our table a less desirable location for lingering, which we may have done more of. Our server was fantastic. He was attentive and energetic without being obnoxious. He gave several recommendations on food since 75% of us had never been to the restaurant. I ordered the paddy melt, an Irish twist on a traditional patty melt. It was a seasonal menu item. The beef was tender and flavorful and the Swiss cheese was perfectly melted. The pub chips may have stolen the show, though. They're like a hybrid of potato chips and potato wedges. And my fellow diners kept stealing them from my plate. My husband had the special, a crab-stuffed haddock, which he devoured and raved about. Someone else had the shepherd's pie and declared it the best they've ever had. Overall, a great experience. I would recommend they roll out the barrels (see what I did there?) and bring in some real tables instead.

Yelp
Regarding the response from Matt on my first review. The upkeep on the outside of the building was poor. There were broken and bent pieces all over the front. This was not signs of "construction" being done. The front was run down. The bathroom's hard water stains had been there for a long time. The Fish & Chips were still excellent as always. Just disappointed that this once fine establishment has been neglected over the years.
google avatar

Yelp
Upon coming in we didn't know this place was a chain and even after getting our food you still wouldn't know. We fully enjoyed the staff and environment. We got the chicken strips appetizer, SUPER CRUNCHY in the best way :)

Molly S.

Yelp
Perfect for a private gathering! We had 12 coming to see my daughter in the Purdue Christmas Show and we wanted a place we could all gather after to celebrate. We were seated in their "Library"and it was just perfect! The ambiance was great with low-lights and a fire in the "fireplace." We could hear the live music softly in the background and could enjoy our conversation. When it got louder, we just closed the door. Highly recommend for a group dinner. Service and food was fantastic as well.
google avatar

Jess H.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, staff were wearing masks, and they seated us away from people which I appreciated. The food was good! I loved the breaded tenderloin sandwich. Great Irish pub! I will be back!

Yelp
You can't go wrong with Nine Irish Brothers! Their food is hearty and fresh and the beers are so good! I've had the corned beef here and several of their sandwiches. Everything has been top-notch!

Yelp
Food: **** Service: **** Ambiance: **** Fish and chips were awesome. Crispy and not salty. Second best F&C I had in recent years. Sheppard's pie was great as well and the price was reasonable. Friendly service.

Yelp
My husband I just had a belated Birthday dinner at our local 9 Irish and had a fabulous experience! Our server Marvin was absolutely wonderful! Going forward we hope to always have Marvin as our server!

Yelp
I really enjoyed the sirloin steak, nice and tender. The pity were ok. The carrots were really good, you could smell the sweet glaze on them as soon as they came to the table. Portions were huge. My husband got the prime rib but was not impressed as I was. He that was just ok. Again it came with huge helpings of mashed potatoes and carrots. I enjoy their bread there very much. Not pictured, I had the onion soup. It was ok.

Yelp
They say coronavirus cases are on the rise in Tippecanoe County. This is a perfect example of why. We strongly urge patrons to stay away from this establishment if you value your health and the health of your friends and families. We have been regular patrons to both 9 Irish locations and adore their food and drink. But we will never be back to the east side establishment based on what we observed. My wife and I stopped for dinner around 5:45 on a Monday evening. We observed a total of 5, maybe 6, employees during our less than 1-hour dinner. Once we saw what we saw, we did not linger like we normally might. It felt very unsafe. The problem: 3 of 5 of the employees, including the manager, blatantly violated the mask-wearing mandate for Tippecanoe County. The only 2 employees who wore masks continuously were the servers. In fact, it was the servers who had to ask a customer who entered the premises without a mask to wear one. The customer left and came back shortly with a mask on. Here is what we observed: - One employee was arm in arm with another person (it was unclear if she worked there because she was not in a restaurant uniform). Yet arm in arm they were walking around without masks and going in and out of the kitchen. - One employee (cook? food runner?) was walking in and out of the kitchen with her mask below her mouth. - The manager, who was also the bartender, was behind the bar serving patrons as well as going in and out of the kitchen with his mask hanging off his ear. We brought this to the attention of the manager, and while he apologized, he went back behind the bar and never left while employees were still coming in and out of the kitchen. How do we get a handle on this virus, if even the managers of establishments refuse to follow the guidelines? We have made a formal report to the Tippecanoe County Health Department, but we strongly urge others to not visit this establishment. We realize businesses, particularly restaurants, are hurting. But we will never get back to normal if the guidelines are not followed.

Yelp
love this place! We eat here whenever we come to Purdue! Highly recommend the Pots of Gold!
