Finally got around to trying another local favorite: Nine Mile's original Montford location. The vibe is casual, like a real neighborhood restaurant you feel comfortable in. I was surprised that they had several draft beer selections that they brew themselves. We had their stout (very good, not too earthy and no bite) and a blond ale (nice and refreshing, with a citrusy background). We ordered the Nine Mile with jerk chicken and the tilapia-based Raggy Road. Both came with a small starter salad. The salad was very fresh but what made it really special was the jalapeno cilantro lime dressing. One of THE BEST salad dressings I've ever had. It comes with what they call natty bread, which seems like it's basically just parmesan cheese bread (but it was good in any case). The tilapia portion was large and nicely blackened with the Cajun spice rub. Tilapia is pretty much a blank slate, but they filled it out nicely with both the seasoning and the coconut chipotle sauce (excellent!). It worked well as a cream sauce over the cavatappi pasta (essentially macaroni). I've had jerk chicken many times and it can be dry. Here is was well-seasoned and very tender, and complemented by the amazing sauce of fresh fire roasted tomatoes, ginger and jalapeno peppers. You can specify spice level. I got mine medium, but the server offered a hotter sauce that they use for the next level up on the side, in case I wanted to take it up a notch. It had a little background burn as it was, but I did add a drizzle of the hot sauce. That was all it took! Their hot sauce comes on strong and very hot a minute or two after it hits your taste buds, so unless you like really hot stuff, you may want to go easy on it. I had the Nine Mile over basmati rice versus the linguine option (the rice seemed more traditional Jamaican). Both dishes had yellow squash, zucchini and onions in the sauce, and these were a wonderful addition for both flavor and heft. Our server was fantastic and provided some excellent insights and guidance re the menu. I've not had a lot of Jamaican food, but here it seemed to have some elements of fusion cuisine. The creamy macaroni had elements of Southern cuisine and some of the menu items, if you order them with pasta, could pass for "turned up" Italian cuisine. Keep that in mind if a member of your party thinks they wouldn't like Jamaican food. Given the extensive menu, there are lots of options here (so we'll definitely be back to try some more!). A final note: several people we know who have been here previously said their prices have gone up more than the 20% of so inflation over the past 2-3 years. The prices still seem reasonable IMO given the quality, number of ingredients and portion size. And remember: great staff deserve livable wages, plus nice tips. My one nit is that as of the date I'm writing this review, the prices shown on their current website are lower than the actual prices shown on the restaurant menu/as billed. I'm assuming the website just hasn't been updated -- an error, but one that should be fixed!
