I ordered the hot roast beef sandwich. It was excellent. Perfect balance of meat peppers, cheese and siracha mayo. The roll it was in was also excellent. I wish this place was closer to my house. The side of coleslaw was refreshing and I was happy to find that they didn't add a bunch of sugar. I will be back!

Google
FIVE-STARS! We love the high quality of Ninth Street Bakery products, especially the 7-Grain loaf, muffins, and more... Although we have visited their bakery and store in downtown Durham, most of the time we will pick up their products at the South Durham Farmers Market and Whole Foods in Raleigh.

Google
Delicious sandwich. Got the club on 7 grain. Wow. And the coleslaw was great. No sugar. What a great lunch.

Google
I had a fantastic lunch at Ninth Street Bakery—the turkey sandwich was absolutely delicious, with all the ingredients tasting super fresh and flavorful. The portion was so generous that I had enough for a second meal! Highly recommend this spot for anyone craving a tasty and satisfying bite. Looking forward to trying their bakery goods!

Google
Delicious croissants. Great central and spacious space for meeting people. Fair prices. Tasty salads with homemade dressing. Free parking for cars and ample bike rack. Good deal for the day old stuff. My 2 wishes would be that they opened before 8. Kinda late open for a bakery if you ask me. I'd even be pleased with 730am, I'd certainly frequent more. And I wish they served Counter Culture coffee.

Google
This bakery is truly a Durham delight. I had my first date with my partner here two years ago and we’ve been coming regularly with an amazing experience every time since. Their service is so good, the people are fun, talented bakers with warm and friendly vibes, and the atmosphere is so cozy. The food and pastries are always delicious and feel like a home cooked meal. Great for lunch or a small breakfast for sitting in or to go. Lovely bakery!

Google
You gotta love the vibe that is Durham NC and all the genuinely "on point" eateries. Ninth St. Bakery is one of those that strongly contributes to this vibe. I have only been here once so I can't say too much about the many offerings. I did have the "Spicy" pulled chicken sandwich and that's the reason for the missing star.. it was not "Spicy", it was bland. Everything else looked yummy but the chicken is all I tried.

Google
Fantastic counter service and a damn good, and generously sized, potion for $12. The double chocolate chip cookie was as big as my sandwich and quite possibly my favorite part of the meal. The cheese and veggie sandwich was great, I'll try the hummus and veggie next!

Yelp
Ninth Street Bakery has great quality breads and pastries. They have a $3 day old shelf that is often filled with sliced bread, brioche, cookies, and muffins. I love swinging by on a work day to get a treat. Pictured below: olive rosemary sliced bread.

Yelp
I arrived to town in the afternoon with an empty stomach, rather desperate for something nutritious and Ninth Street Bakery came to my rescue with their appealing vegan options. Bonus is that it's located a few steps from the Marriott Downtown, so I was able to get something quick before getting back to a busy work day. Their lentil soup is delicious and it's an enormous bowl for such a reasonable price! It comes with 7 grain bread or crackers and is super filling. I also couldn't resist one of the oatmeal/banana/chocolate chip cookies which is super m(word... I don't want to trigger anyone haha).

Yelp
Great items. Good selection of items. Friendly service. ReLly like the location has both indoor and outdoor eating.

Michelle J.

Yelp
The best bread! We stop in for our weekly rustic loaf and have it sliced. They have many types of bread and pastries too. Easy to park and run in for what you need. Occasionally we will have a sandwich or soup or pastry and coffee and sit at the picnic tables on the covered loading dock outside.

Yelp
Walked over from 21c Museum hotel yesterday to get a late afternoon snack at Ninth Street Bakery and picked up a cranberry scone (staffer warned me it might be too dry for my taste and wanted feedback) and the cranberry walnut muffin (staffer suggested I get this or the blueberry muffin over the scone). I wanted to do a taste test and provide feedback so came back with both. Cranberry scone - 3/5 - definitely dry, which isn't usually an issue for me, it's just that there weren't that many cranberries and I prefer my scones flakier which compensates for the dry nature of most scones (which is why I usually like scones). The scone could have benefited from an orange glaze, more cranberries, flakier pastry. Cranberry walnut muffin - 4/5. I ate the muffin top immediately and enjoyed it, muffin overall a little on the dry side but more full of cranberries and walnuts the ratio overall is good for a muffin. I am eating the leftovers now a day later and it's quite tasty and a good size for a muffin (the cranberry scone is still mostly uneaten by me). I hear the breads are quite good but since I'm here on business and need to get on a plane tomorrow it makes less sense for me to get a loaf.

Yelp
Absolutely freakin' fantastic bread at a fair price. And in honor of Pride Month, they even flour stenciled some of the loaves with LGBTQ+ lettering. How thoughtful and supportive is that? The loaf we got was one of the best loaves of bread I've ever eaten. It toasted so well with a crispy crust but still hearty, bready inside. Great with just butter, or butter and cheese or charcuterie. All I can say is I'm actually glad this place is in Durham rather than Asheville, or I'd be eating basically nothing but their bread. P.S. It smells great if you even just walk by this place.

Yelp
This place is just simply A-mazing. Came across this place being from out of town during the Holidays. The only thing I could not figure out is the parking situation. There seemed to be a tow truck trolling the area. I realized to park in the Bakery marked spots. I wish they were a little clearer. Anyways, I went in and came across a place that looks like they have fresh bread products all the time. I was a little lost being that it was my 1st time in here. I asked the gal for help behind the counter. I settled for the Turkey on Multigrain with Coleslaw (instead of chips). I also saw the glass case in front of me had brownies. How could I say no to them! The Blueberry danishes looked great also. Hell, everything here looked great. I took a seat behind the high top table and a few minutes later, the food came out. While waiting, I noticed a guy working with a salt-pepper beard (tallish) who seemed to be the gate keeper. He was keeping the line formed to one side. He also told some people to keep their dogs outside and not inside, duh! He needs a raise. He was doing the lords work right there . The food was simple but great. You can tell they use quality ingredients by the way everything tasted. I don't usually get Turkey because it's often dry. This was moist and flavorful. Also, don't sleep on the Coleslaw. It's really delicious. I wish I would have put it inside the sandwich instead of eating it separate. Guess I'll try that next time. I'm also glad I came in when I did because the lunch crowd hit shortly after I came in. This is a fantastic bakery. I'm glad I came across it and will definitely be back this week to try the egg sandwich I saw on the menu.

Yelp
Everything about Ninth Street Bakery is perfection! We started buying their breads about a year ago & have continued to make it our regular routine! The food so delicious & fresh, the service is always professional & friendly, the ambience is exactly what it should be for a neighborhood bakery/sandwich/soup spot! Love this place so much, I even bought a t-shirt! BTW the cakes & pastries are also sooooooo DELICIOUS!

T C.

Yelp
Me and my friend both have different sandwiches for lunch today, either of us enjoy them as the bread are super dry and the ingredients are tasteless. it supposed to be a good bakery like other people said here? I'm Very disappointed!

Matthew R.

Yelp
Too many awesome baked options to decide what is best. Everything we eat here is just fantastic. Coffee is highly recommended. We bring home fresh bread every time we visit.

T H.

Yelp
Just ok, flavors were weird on scones we bought which was disappointing. May it was just the scones and the pastries are good? Not sure.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
Pastries are better than the sandwiches. The bread was too dense for sandwiches surprising as it's a big bakery.

Ivona P.

Yelp
Ninth Street Bakery is my destination for good bread in Downtown Durham. Love their Stary Night bread, I wish they made it more regularly!
google avatar

Jen C.

Yelp
My friend and I came by for some morning pastries. I ordered the bear claw and my friend got the banana bread. The bear claw was very sweet, flakey, and flavorful! The banana bread was moist and not too sweet. Overall, I would definitely return for more pastries!

Violette B.

Yelp
I have been going to 9th street Bakery for almost all of my 35 years living here. Their breads are great. Their carrot muffins are awesome. My husband is addicted to Mini Mmm-Hmms & Midnight cookies. For.me the Pièce de résistance is the Pan Forte that is made every year between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Ninth Street Bakery is so comfortably Durham. I buy way too many of them with no regrets.

Jacquelyn M.

Yelp
We bring groups to Ninth Street Bakery all the time. Their sandwiches, soups and pastries are so fresh. The staff are great to work with too. We love siting outside and since it is covered we are good outside most of the year. There's a reason Ninth Street has been around since 1981. Highly recommend.

Yelp
When I lived in Durham, this place was on ninth street, but it's got a lot of lovely seating outside it certainly couldn't have before. It was easy to find good, veggie-friendly food. Very reasonable prices, and great bread, of course! Our insanely picky child just wanted dessert.

Frank L.

Yelp
Great breads and pastries. Terrific service in both the store and at the Durham Farmers Market. A definite go-to place even if it is no longer on Ninth Street.

Todd S.

Yelp
NSB is the heart and soul of Durham. They do tremendous good in the community and the food is wonderful.
google avatar

Rebecca M.

Yelp
Ninth Street Bakery is a good place for lunch with soups; salads and sandwiches. They have both inside and outside seating. I ordered the egg salad sandwich which was huge. I tried giving half of the sandwich away to a homeless man but the staff wouldn't let me do that so that did leave a bad impression. I did try to find the man but no luck so the other half went to waste.
google avatar

Natasha L.

Yelp
I bought a package of the CHOCOLATE MMM HMM gluten free cookies at the Wednesday Farmers Market in Durham. The person helping me directed me to these dairy free gluten free cookies which were delicious! They were described as fudgy and decadent and did not disappoint.

Veronica M.

Yelp
Each time I visit the staff is always friendly and the pastries are delicious. You can't go wrong with anything you purchase. Stop by and get you some goodies.
google avatar

Rich M.

Yelp
Such a cool industrial exterior with a bakery/restaurant setting inside. The breads they bake here look soooooo yummy. This was my first time here, it won't be my last. We ordered the bear claw and ham and cheese croissant. The pastries were delicious and weren't heavy. The service was good and the staff friendly. Can't want to go back and try the brioche hamburger buns
google avatar

Brandee S.

Yelp
Just had the chicken salad sandwich on the 7 grain bread and it was AMAZING. 10/10 would recommend!! Also, bonus for the fresh bread smell in this place!

David M.

Yelp
Great coffee and amazing baked goods. Great variety of fresh baked breads and muffins.

Bill D.

Yelp
From the pastries, to the sandwiches, soups, breads, everything is fresh made, and the people are kind and generous. One of my favorite spots in Durham. They support the community in many ways, big and small. When friends come from out of town, I try to bring them here. Everything is fresh, delicious, and the people are great. Couldn't give Ninth Street Bakery a hire rating!

Lee L.

Yelp
Service is wonderful and baked goods are always fresh and tasty. Would recommend to anyone
google avatar

Suzanne K.

Yelp
Enjoyed the sandwiches, egg salad and Zats what I'm talking about. Cole slaw vinegary but good by me, not to my date's taste. Popular with the lunch crowd both eat in and take out.
google avatar

Christina Y.

Yelp
This is a good "hidden" place to get all your treats! I stopped by before heading out of town and picked up some treats for the family as well as treats for the plan. Their ham and cheese was a nice snack that did well even a few hours later, but the variety of cookies is what made everyone the most happy. I got the mini chocolate chips that are a perfect one bite dessert except you usually want more than one. Hehe

Bill M.

Yelp
The pastries, bread, and coffee were fantastic, and the outdoor seating area is very nice.
google avatar

Tania M.

Yelp
We stopped in for some fresh baked cookies and we all left with a loaves of bread. As we picked out the cookies we wanted - peanut butter chocolate chip and double chocolate chip we found the day old bread shelf. What a great selection. The cookies were HUGE and delicious! I picked out the sunflower seed bread- it was so good!

Emma M.

Yelp
Everything is phenomenal and I love the rotation of sweet baked goods. Best made to order lunch downtown. The service is also always spot on!
google avatar

Stuart S.

Yelp
Ari has hit it out of the park with the caramelized onion rye country loaf. SUBLIME! Nice people, great bread, great food!
google avatar

Mina M.

Yelp
This place has got character. There is no fluff. The indoors is mostly the kitchen, which you get to see. And the storefront has racks of bread and pastries, and drip coffee. They also have a soup and salad menu that is reliably fresh and flavorful. My favorite is the Challah bread - it is soft and a little sweet (honey, not refined sugar). I usually get it from their day-old rack. It's 50% off! They often have other breads and scones too. The outdoor area has several seating options. It's covered. There is a restroom. No table service. It isn't fancy, and it is just right.

Sean C.

Yelp
Exceptional ham and cheese croissant. It was so good, I was almost sorry I hadn't ordered a plain one. This croissant doesn't need any help! Good coffee, very nice servers.

Matthew H.

Yelp
Food was good, service was excellent. The atmosphere was also above average. Unfortunately, although I do not remember volunteering my email, apparently they mined it from my use of a debit card. As I received a nice email offering a discount on my next visit. I would have given my email if asked. And returned as a customer on next visit to Durham. But such a blatant use of my personal information without my permission means I will not return.

Erica M.

Yelp
Best pastries in the triangle. Fresh, delicious, and always a significant variety in offerings. You're guaranteed to find something you love!

Carol L.

Yelp
The food is excellent! The staff is amazing and very friendly! The ambiance is relaxing!
google avatar

Jay P.

Yelp
Bear Claw was light and fluffy and filled with a slight flavor of chocolate. Just enough sweetness to enjoy with a fresh cup of coffee. Sorry I did not get a picture of that one. I was too busy eating it!
google avatar

Meen C.

Yelp
I walk here every Sunday after church! The oatmeal raisin cookies are THE BEST. Coffee is always hot and my friends love the cinnamon rolls.

Bruce M.

Yelp
I walked was greeted with a smile. All the employees looked happy to be at work. Wasn't rushed to order and was allowed to view the offered options. Got juice and an amazingly awesome monster m&m cookie. The cookie was divine!

Audra S.

Yelp
So good at the south Durham farmers market! New location is fun. Always a treat to get treats and fresh bread.
google avatar

Yolanda Y.

Yelp
Local bakery with lots of vegan / GF choices! Has lunch options, around $10 for a sandwich meal. Not a ton of pastries available, but the ones I tried (scone and danish) were both cheap and yummy!
google avatar

Jeremiah G.

Yelp
Katie that took my order was so sweet she was so kind I would give her 10 stars. If I could I love their pastries and their bread I wish there was a bakery like this closer to me. Thank you and I will be back. I love this place. when I am in town for my doctors next year.
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
I first encountered NSB when a friend and I went for coffee. I also had a Danish it was delicious and the coffee was good also. When I went to check out I saw all the different types of bread, I got the sunflower seed loaf to take home the family loved it. The next week when I was in town I tried another kind and the ginger snap cookies.... both excellent. I have been getting 2 loaves when ever I am in town. Excellent service also.

Defendor Soar B.

Yelp
The danish and the croissant that I ate was delicious. The prices are too expensive but the service was good.

Elisa R.

Yelp
I love Ninth Street Bakery. They have been around for years and have seemingly adapted with the times, now offering a diverse array of baked goods and healthy food to choose from, not to mention the great beverage selection. The space is comforting and inviting, especially the outdoor seating. I also love their swag! (shirts, hats, bags, etc.).

Wouldratherbeeating G.

Yelp
Amazing service. I have to say though, the pastries were subpar. The morning bun had a firm texture, with no flavour, and the cookies were so dry I had to soak it in my coffee.
google avatar

Tammy M.

Yelp
We visited on a Sat afternoon at around 1:30. There was not much left in the case to choose from. It was our first time here and I really wanted to try something that they are famous for. The donuts made of croissant dough (and I think the girl said they were filled with something) were WAY overpriced. We just couldn't do it for one pastry. Instead we got cinnamon rolls for breakfast the next morning. We microwaved the cinny rolls for a very short time before eating them the next morning. For the price, probably some of the worst cinnamon rolls we have ever had (and we eat a lot of cinnamon rolls). Never again. Maybe the sandwiches are good ? It is nice that they have a dedicated parking lot. This area of downtown Durham is always a crap shoot for parking.
