"Brother and sister duo William and Marsha Boudreaux offer classic Southern coastal soul food a few minutes east of downtown Wilmington. Inspired by the home cooking of their mother, Carrie, the menu at Nippy’s features dishes like crab rice, butter beans and okra, turkey wings, barbecue ribs, ox tails, and fish and grits. All dinners come with two sides and optional rice and gravy, although for that true home-cooked meal feeling the rice and gravy is never really optional." - Matt Lardie

I came expecting a completely different restaurant. Nippy's is now available Restobar. The service was great. Order that pineapple lemonade. I ordered the pork chops with collards and mac and cheese and it did not disappoint. The cornbread was chef's kiss! I will be returning!

If I could give 10 stars I would. I came all the way from Allentown pa just to try this food and it DELIVERED. Mr Webo the owner, was on the road w his food truck (webos food truck) and one of his relatives was around when we were looking to see if we could get into the restaurant. She kindly called him up, told him we were on the hunt, and he said he’d wait for us along with his staff over in Burgaw NC. WOW I’ve never experienced such love and kindness in service at all. We got over there, met with the utmost kindness and warmth, we ordered our food and LET ME SAY this PA girl was impressed. The homemade juice was amazing. My friend with me usually hates strawberry and she had that, it was amazing. She loved it. I had the pineapple and it was truly refreshing. Now the food: What I had: Fried chicken wings. - cooked to perfection and seasoned extrem well. Hot and crunchy, juicy, crispy literally everything you want in a chicken when u ask for fried chicken. Mac n cheese: yummy, gooey, perfectly seasoned, and delicious. Had it for breakfast this morning leftovers. So good. Has a chicken taste to it I wondered if the pasta was boiled with the chicken broth they had. If so, that’s genius. Chicken and rice: seasoned, hot, excellent. No skimping on the chicken in there either. It was amazing. The broth they cooked it with was so flavorful it pulled everything together and married the whole dish. I’ve never had southern food before unless is was made up north where I’m from. And that was disappointing. BUT WEBO RESTORED my love for soul food. You can just tell this meal was made with LOVE. cooking with love. I grew up in an Arabic home. You can TELL when something is prepped that way, and cooked that way. I’m honored to have the opportunity to try it and I will be singing webos praises all the way up north.

Where do I start!! Front the time you walk in the door you know you are in the right place!! The staff is great, the atmosphere is great. And God the food smells so good. We got the buffet and let me tell you this place is a sin!!! The food taste like an angel came down from heaven and touched every bit!! I can't find not one thing on this bar that wasn't good!! Normally I am the one that picks apart every little detail when it come to food BUT this place got me!! NOT one item that wasn't cooked to perfection!! So, if you are in the area and want some REAL SOUL FOOD!! Not some wanna be soul food but that really stuff that leaves you begging for more! Stop on by Nippy's Soul Food Restaurant and let the taste of heaven fill your soul!!

Google
I really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. The staff was very nice to us, I do wish our waitress would have come to the table more to offer refills, but over all the food was great. Plate 1: Pork ribs, Mac n Cheese, yams rice gravy. Plate 2: Beef ribs, black eye peas, fried mushrooms, rice and gravy. Extra Sides: Cabbage, Collards, Chittlins. I'll come back.

Just left this wonderful place with delicious food. Going inside I saw the sign about feeding the homeless twice a month. That is an amazing blessing for the community. My party and I loved the atmosphere and the staff were awesome. This was my first trip to Wilmington, but I will definitely stop in here my next visit.

The food was off the chain excellent matter what you got off the menu very tasty. It was, if I cooked it myself very soulful.

Yelp
We appreciate them allowing us to dine in as we realized upon entering the hours on Yelp are not correct. Call first to check the hours. We were served fairly quick. I had the pork chop meal and my children shared the chicken meal. Both were nice sized portions for the cost. It comes with rice and gravy but you also get to choose two sides. The green beans are way too salty so beware if you need to avoid high sodium dishes. The yams were tasty and we loved the cornbread.

Yelp
I grew up in Wilmington and love the food. I now live in Portland OR and we don't usually get food this good. Brought my kiddo with me and he loved the shrimp burger we shared. Nice plump shrimp, great lima beans and okra my kid thought was to slimy. It was delicious! All of it. Visit this place. It is good stuff

Yelp
I love coming to Nippy's for the lunch! The owners and everyone working there are seriously the sweetest people. You go in, get seated, and someone brings you a drink. While you're waiting, your brain has already zeroed in on the delicious food in the buffet. While it doesn't look like a ton of food in terms of the variety, once you taste everything, you will stuff yourself silly with quantity because everything is delicious! I particularly love the mac'n'cheese, fried chicken, and the BBQ fish. Make sure you save room though for the desserts- there's usually some type of cobbler in the buffet too and it's always good.

Michelle S.

Yelp
Greens and Mac and Cheese were awesome. Hamburger Steak was delicious. Friendly and Great staff that gave me some great information about the area of things to do. Will be back next time we are in the area.

Yelp
We were so disappointed in this place. We had had a truly excellent Southern food buffet in Myrtle Beach so we had such high hopes. But sadly they were dashed. This is ho-hum food. We were thinking, salt and pepper isn't the only seasoning you can use in food. The food wasn't bad, it just wasn't that good- strictly OK. Such a disappointment- we wouldn't return actually.

Li P.

Yelp
Service is impeccable and food is good. The restaurant's ambiance leaves much to be desired but I usually take out!

Yelp
Driving for Lyft I meet all manner of wonderful folk, including one of the cooks at Nippy's. The location on Carolina Beach Road is easy to get to and there is plenty of parking available. The inside is much as many a diner I have frequented and has plenty of seating. The menu is posted on the wall by the register (dangerous as all that saliva may get on the counter) and is full of all manner of delicious, tempting treats. I had the beef ribs with macaroni and cheese (rice with gravy and cornbread come with the meal) and once it arrived there wasn't a whole lot of talking (just smacking and slurping). Kathy had the liver and onions which she said were extremely tender and very delicious (I deferred on sampling, though I did share one of my ribs, seems rather biblical don't you think). The ribs were delicious and I wound up taking a few home for the next day as there were so many. Wonderful place and we will be back.

Yelp
The service is very good. The people working here are extremely kind. Upon entering the restaurant there is an odor. At first I thought it was collards or chitterlings since those Do have a strong odor when they are being prepared. After eating, When I went to the bathroom I realized the odor was coming from there and was very strong, smelled like sewage and mildew. There was no visible leaks but there may be some internal plumbing issues with the building. The dining area of the restaurant is clean but the odor is off putting. I ordered baked chicken collards rice gravy Mac n cheese. The food was mediocre, I didn't enjoy the cornbread as it was brought out in a plastic zip loc bag that looked to be heated in a microwave bc the corn bread got rock hard once it returned to room temperature. Also they are serving on paper plates which I have never seen before at a restaurant. Someone with us ordered ribs that came out extremely dry, I highly doubt that they were freshly made that day. The meat on the ribs was so dry it looked like beef jerky...I hope that this review will be used for constructive feedback and that the restaurant owners will make adjustments to fix these concerns.

Yelp
My husband and I started visiting Nippy's at its previous location, and find the current Carolina Beach Rd. location very convenient. I am always looking for and supporting Black owned businesses, first and foremost; especially in Wilmington, NC. So it is my absolute pleasure to support Nippy's and explore the extensive soul food menu. Next to my dad, Nippy's has the best whiting (fish) I have ever enjoyed. And the portions! Huge! And every bite is finger-licking good. One thing I really appreciate is that Nippy's prepares holiday dinners. During the pandemic, when travel and time with family was limited, it was such a relief to be able to still enjoy a soulful holiday dinner, even if we weren't with family in-person.

Yelp
This was my second visit to Nippy's but the first visit at their new location located on Carolina Beach Rd. We went for their Sunday lunch buffet spread full of anything and everything Soul Food, including ox tails, fried shrimp & fish, greens, yams, okra, mashed potatoes and on and on and on. For $19.99 per adult and $9.99 for children 12 and under, this buffet is not playing around. I took 2 trips in an effort to try most of what Nippy's is all about. I did not taste the chitterlings, pigs feet or turkey stuffing but I did almost everything else. Here are the highlights of the buffet for me: Fried shrimp was fantastic, fried fish was good as well. The steamed okra with pork fat was incredible when dished over the white rice and Nippy's fried chicken is golden, juicy, crispy and overall fantastic. But the best item from the buffet, IMO, was the collard greens, with the mac and cheese coming in a close second. The collards? Just, oh yeah...not bitter, balanced with adequate vinegar and chips of fresh bacon blended throughout, easily making this my favorite of the day. Some of the items, I wasn't crazy about at all and am wondering if there may have been a missed opportunity in the kitchen? The yams and bread pudding are what I'm referencing. The yams had quite a bit of cinnamon, like...a lot of cinnamon and overtook any and all flavors of the yams and other ingredients used to prepare them. It almost tasted as if some dashes of the cinnamon were the intent but the top of the cinnamon container popped off. Not sure what happened here but I wasn't a fan. I believe if more brown sugar had been added and half of the cinnamon were omitted, they could have been wonderful. The bread pudding wasn't bad, just wasn't my thing. Overall, the food was great, our family ate well and we had the pleasure of speaking with Marcia (Nippy's owner) as she made her rounds through the dining room. She has a passion for making people smile and her food is most certainly a way to do it. Thank you for a very nice experience on a Sunday afternoon. SCORE: 4.5 STARS!!

Yelp
Don't eat here roaches and mold , their service suchs , food quality is poor ! they use spoiled food ! food is tasteless i feel like this food is ment for nursing home patients with no teeth

Yelp
Oooo Nippy's where do I start? I was in the Wilmington area and my mother wanted some soul food. Everything was delicious and we ordered takeout. My order was correct which is very important because I was rushing and didn't check the food also the food was still at a good temperature and didn't have to warm it up. I had the meatloaf with Mac and cheese and the greens all plates come with rice and gravy and it was so good and comforting. Next time I'm in town definitely will try the buffet.

Michael B.

Yelp
Ate there today tried out the buffet. Everything was very good and seasoned well. Staff was very friendly and made sure I was taken care of , will go back!

Mary R.

Yelp
Nippy's Soul Food is everything you'd think it would be. Their menu varies daily offering fish, chicken, and pork chops, as well as ox tails, neck bones, and liver. If you get a lunch or dinner special which comes with rice and gravy, you also choose two sides from as many as none choices. We choose fried pork chops and crab cakes. Our sides included potato salad, macaroni and cheese, fried okra, and collards. There's no doubt this was all "home cooked.". Everything came out piping hot and wonderfully flavored. The fried pork chops were huge and moist! The crab cakes, not counting the peppers, were all crab. I especially loved the collards because there was no hint of bitterness which sometimes I've experienced. The decor, tables, and serve ware are all very simple, but if you're coming here it's for really good home-style, soul satisfying food. I'm looking forward to a return trip becausei want to try shrimp chowder. The also offer BLTs, hot dogs, and more as well as home-made desserts.

Yelp
This, seemingly quiet, little restaurant really packs a WALLOP! I went with my family ( Mom, Dad, and teenager) each ordered something different. We all shared and tasted what the other had, let me tell you, there was NOT a single tasteless dish! Mom's fried chicken was tender, juicy, and fresh - she chose collards and butterbeans for her sides (divine!). Dad had the fried gizzards with mac-n-cheese (traditional southern style- rich and creamy) and okra (fresh and tasty). Teen had jerk chicken and double fries, they licked their fingers! I had the chicken and pastry with field peas - tasted like I was at a Sunday dinner at my friend's Nana's house! Cannot WAIT to go back!!

Starr H.

Yelp
The food was ok. The $20 buffet left much to be desired. The problem was they charge an automatic 20% gratuity for 5 or more. They included my 2yr old as the 5th person that didn't eat or receive any service. Why charge that and we ordered the buffet and besides bringing drinks, you didn't do anything else.

Devine S.

Yelp
The food nor service is good enough to deal with the owner towing cars during a graduation at the stadium across the street!!!! This place has maybe 5 work vehicles and instead of allowing grace due to an already improperly planned graduation with not nearly enough parking for guests, they turned a night of celebration into a night of paying $200 to get cars out of impound. There is no excuse for it. The diner closes after the graduation ended so why not just wait? Especially when the graduation wasn't even 2 hours time! I've waited almost as long to get served food at this place but asking yall to wait was too much I guess. Definitely never supporting this business again and will be telling anyone who cares to listen. Just sad coming from a business that's supposed to be about community.

Nikia W.

Yelp
Excellent soul food, wonderful owners were very friendly and kind. Food was delicious. I highly recommend.

Susan J.

Yelp
I heard about this restaurant from a Facebook post. It noted how good it was so I gave it a try. Very disappointed. We gave our order and was served tea. The tea tasted old. The two waitresses that were there when we got there and both served and took our order left the restaurant. I guess their shit was over. Another waitress, the only waitress there, came in and answered phone calls and took to go orders from walk-Ins. After 25+ minutes we got up and paid fir our teas and told the waitress on the phone reading out the menu that we were leaving since we were not served. I understand hard to find good help but this was a little over the top.

Brandi H.

Yelp
We absolutely loved this place! Most certainly will be returning. Maybe even this weekend. Despite appearing as if the buffet had been sitting, everything on it was so delicious. The collards so very well seasoned. The shrimp was a hit with my entire family. Baked spaghetti, amazing. Fried chicken done just right. Service was a tad on the slower side but that didn't upset us one bit. The staff was so pleasant and a joy to speak with. They were also extremely patient with the kids.

Elizabeth D.

Yelp
Everything was delicious I would happily live the rest of my days eating nothing but collards and cornbread at Nippy's. Yummy macaroni and cheese: not sloppy, just straightforward perfect. Potato salad that tastes like potato salad, NOT just potatoes with pickle juice and miracle whip. Chicken and pork ribs falling-off-the-bone tender and flavorful. But please eat the collards with your cornbread. You'll be back.

Nicole B.

Yelp
Nice and friendly staff, sadly most seafood options I wanted weren't available on seafood weekend. Fried shrimp was good, crab cake was almost brunt. Sides are cornbread is good, the rest mediocre rice and gravy was bland, potato salad, mac and cheese okay and green from a can.

David S.

Yelp
We all had great food, seafood perfect, catfish...amazing, smothered pork chops, yup, chicken and rice, so good!! My 5 year old scarfed it UP!! Great friendly people, super food, clean bathrooms, we will be back!!!

Kiaundra J.

Yelp
Don't think twice about going. Go now!!! The food here was beyond amazing. Just walking in, I felt like I was in a grandma's kitchen. I knew the food was going to be good. I wasn't disappointed at all. The food here is true soul food. Sunday dinner or Thanksgiving dinner. All the goodness. I come from a small town in the south so my soul food is different that "city" soul food. Give it a try y'all! Oh yeah, they have more to offer than what's on the menu. It depends on what day you go in. I was also told that they make everything from scratch which is great. They cut fresh sweet potatoes and make candy yams, cut of cabbage, collards, boil the noodles for the Mac and cheese....YASSS LORD!!!

Jessica R.

Yelp
Best soul food in Wilmington. Also has a great buffet bar too ! Food is always good .

Valerie B.

Yelp
This was a BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. We were in town ...(Tampa & Houston) for a family get together and was so excited to get some North Carolina soul food... THIS AIN'T IT. The difference in our charge and what the menu prices were online was a puzzle... When we called back we were informed "Oh those prices are old ", we just didn't update it... WTF....NOW THE FOOD...WHO IS WRITING THE GOOD REVIEWS..?!? the food was terrible... SUGAR WAS IN THE COLLARDS AND GRAVY THE QXTAILS WERE IN!!!..my seafood, shrimp and scallops were in some kind of seasoning that was salty crap, my fried mushrooms were frozen bar food quality, AND WE PAID 100 bucks for four meals!!! Putting mine in the trash now.... RUN....FAST!!!

Bethina G.

Yelp
A hidden gem! Great food and friendly staff. Please visit when you are in the Wilmington NC area. Thanks

valeria s.

Yelp
This is as disappointing to write as it was to experience. The service and food has really gone down since they went into business with the nephew Webo or whatever. A lot of the items they have written on the board to choose from is ALWAYS OUT even if they just opened! But this last experience was the worst and I had to go my bank to get my money back and they didn't fight it. I ordered a turkey wing plate which used to be the best! This time it was the worst turkey wings I have ever eaten and my other choice was beef liver which never seems to be available even though it stays up on the board as if they have some. SMH. I called back and spoke to cook(lady answering phone wasn't playing she said let me let you talk to the cook) and we discussed another option to settle the matter but there was no follow through from their end and I tried reaching out to them on every platform they have to no avail, until I had contacted my bank and sent message through Ms. Marsha's page. I don't think I will be coming back for takeout and from others I know you don't want to do the buffets either. I wish them all the best but they need to do some improvements or make some changes in their staff especially the cooks and person(s) ordering the food from suppliers.

Annemarie K.

Yelp
Stopped in here New Year's Day and was not disappointed! G.G. was SUPER friendly and helpful. The food was fresh and delicious. We got the mullet, crab cake, shrimp, corn nuggets, fried okra, stewed beef, mac n cheese, and butter beans. Everything was absolutely delightful. I love getting fried food that doesn't taste greasy or over fried. The mullet was perfect. I will definitely be visiting again when I return to Wilmington. Oh and don't sleep on the banana pudding.

Carmen H.

Yelp
food was nasty, expensive for no reason and the food was sitting out all day. hadn't even been touched or stirred just for it to be $85. bs, money wasted.

Otis W.

Yelp
On this cold and rainy night the homestyle food and friendly service was just what we needed after driving to downtown Wilmington. highly recommend this fine establishment...

Renee J.

Yelp
Great first-time visit on 6 Nov 21: food was excellent, especially the collards. Staff was friendly and attentive. I will get my soul food fix here.

Deborah N.

Yelp
I visited Nippy's on Sunday and was quite disappointed. I had to wait more than 30 minutes for my to go order. I became concerned with customers who came in after me were picking up food and prepared to leave. I expressed my dismay about the food taking so long and they were not concerned, nor did they care. The service was awful and I am sure this is why I had to wait more than 30 minutes. I became so agitated that I asked for a refund and was told "We don't give refunds". So beware, when the owners are not there the service is awful. The food was delicious as usual, but after such a bad experience I no longer wanted the food. I have notified my credit card company about the refusal to refund my money after receiving such awful service and they are launching a Better Business complaint.

Robert P.

Yelp
Great soul food. GENEROUS portions. Moderate prices. Nice people. Not fancy, but a great spot for Southern comfort food.

Expoze C.

Yelp
I visited Nippy's for lunch. Called ahead was told my order would be ready in 15 minutes, get there 30 minutes later, the food wasn't ready. The lady at the register was very rude. The smothered chicken and porkchops was horrible, and hair in my potato salad. Very disappointed and will never go back.

Sahara B.

Yelp
So the food is flavorful but they hardly give you any food. They only give you 3 oxtails for $17 and 1 piece of fish for $12. Due to this unreasonable amount of food I will not be supporting again.

Rg 1.

Yelp
I visited Nippy's recently during a trip to North Carolina and was blown away by their service and hospitality. My husband and I were made to feel comfortable and at home from the moment we stepped into the restaurant. Our meal was fresh, delicious and "real down home southern cooking." We had the turkey wings with cabbage and fish and shrimp with greens and mac and cheese. The turkey wings were meaty and cooked to perfection, the shrimp and fish were well-seasoned- scrumptious; the mac and cheese was really cheesy and awesome, the collards and cabbage were real homey, as though they were cooked by my very own aunt. The Owner and staff at Nippy's went above and beyond to make sure we were well feed, happy and satisfied. I look forward to future visits to North Carolina and Nippy's.

Hellcat F.

Yelp
Noticed the place across the road after stopping at Charlie Rangers for lunch, since they were closed for maintenance, I decided to walk to Nippy's, and am so glad I did, the place is simple but has home feeling to it, the nicest lady on cashier took my order, she explained the options, which is appreciated, said it's a family business and both her parents did that for living. Food came out fast, had the chicken curry over rice, yam and cabbage, they're taking a healthier approach to soul food and replacing pork with smoked turkey, and other vegetarian substitutes, YAY for me because I don't eat pork and it's always been the problem for me when comes to soul food. Chicken Curry tasted like the one my mom makes (we are from the Middle East) so imagine my excitement, everything was tasty and people including other customers were so very friendly, can't wait to go back and try more of that delicious food.

Spencer W.

Yelp
Super place. I've driven by it nearly every day for a year and finally tried it for lunch. What a surprise. Good food, freshly cooked, great selection, friendly service and very reasonable price. I had the pork chop, rice 'n gravy, corn bread, collards and fried okra with sweet tea. My wife had the chicken wings. Very tasty! We'll be back!

E H.

Yelp
Great food awesome friendly owner. The food was fresh and delicious will be returning very soon to try other menu items. My husband loved the okra said it was better than his grandmothers. So glad we went there today. The buffet very clean and well stocked. Our waitress very nice also.

jordyn a.

Yelp
DO NOT GO. The owner is horrible and the food is nasty and cold even though they make you pay a lot. Go somewhere else PLEASE

Wendy A.

Yelp
Was severely disappointed with my meal today. The cashier told me that the turkey wings dinner came with two turkey wings. I was served partial wing and the tip. My rice and gravy was cold and very bland (greatly under seasoned). Collards were too sweet and cornbread was burnt on the sides and bottom. I called the owner and told her I was given one turkey wing and not two. She said it was the cashiers mistake, not hers so all she could do is tell me she was sorry. The meal was $14.99 plus tax for one turkey wing and two small sides. It was not worth the wait or the money. The customer service is terrible. I will not be back! The owner said next week they will be serving two turkey wings since the wings will be small. My turkey wing was small today but she claimed it was big so I only could get one wing. It wasn't even the whole wing. Any way I want be back.

Sam H.

Yelp
I ate a Nippy's Soul Food today. I was a fan of Ms. Pat's Wings that was previously there so I thought I'd check it out. SUPER FRIENDLY SERVICE! I got an unsweetened tea ( I know) that was pretty stale and tasted like the plastic container had leached. Got the "Stew Beef". It was perfectly cooked but severely under seasoned. Collards were desert sweet with no presence of ham hock. Just too sweet for me. Corn bread also sweeter than I've had before. Okra was standard freezer bag variety which is fine. The ketchup tasted like it had sat unrefrigerated for too long and had that familiar metallic tang. Atmosphere was reminiscent of a nursing home cafeteria which I have grown to like at that location. Super nice folks. Everyone has different tastes.

Flo B.

Yelp
I stopped by Nippy's because I really was in the mood for some southern soul food. It was delicious. The Mac and cheese, collard greens, black eyed peas, cornbread and lemon pound cake did it for me. So far, this is the best soul food in the area. I grew up in Alabama so it's safe to say I know a thing or two about SoulFood. They will always have my business as long as the food continues to be this good. Nippy's is the best. Try it for yourself. You will fall in love as well.

N G.

Yelp
This is a nice place to get soul food. It's reasonably priced and you get a lot of food. The waitress was friendly and helpful. She kept our drinks full and anticipated our needs. The outside of the place is not fancy but don't let that deter you. The inside is decorated like your Grandmas house, has a homey feel in a good way. Neat and clean restaurant and bathroom. Had the oxtail, fried catfish, yams, Mac and cheese, cabbage and potato salad. The cornbread was delicious too. Definitely recommend.
