8 Photo-Worthy Restaurants and Coffee Shops in San Jose

"It’s safe to say the Nirvana Soul coffee shop has gained itself some diehard fans. If you live in the South Bay, chances are you’ve spotted at least one or two folks on the street wearing Nirvana Soul tote bags or face masks with pride. Owned by sisters Jeronica and Be’Anka, Nirvana Soul is downtown San Jose’s first black female-owned coffee shop. The siblings gave their space a cheery sunset color palate (complete with fuchsia ceiling) and curated an upstairs art gallery to highlight local and BIPOC artists. There’s also a mural of the sisters with a fun backstory to it: Painter Ricardo Gonzalez dropped by the shop one day to offer his artistic services (also letting Jeronica and Be’Anka know that this would be his first mural and he’d understood if they wanted to hire someone with more experience). “We told him we’d never opened a coffee shop before so let’s just see what he [came] up with,” the owners share on their Facebook page." - Johanna Harlow

The Hazelnut Mocha was pretty good. The White Rose Latte was good but TOO sweet. The cafe itself is really pretty. Lots of seating space inside and outside. Parking was somewhat hard to find. If you are in the area probably worth a visit.

Google
7 tables downstairs and 3 upstairs. Upstairs is very cute with a skylight. Vegan muffins, milks and a gluten-free mochi cake that is not labeled vegan but according to the allergen label has only coconut and nuts. They also have a piano!

Google
The hot chocolate was far from a cozy delight. It resembled lukewarm water more than anything else, lacking both warmth and flavor. My friend’s cappuccino fared a little better; she took a few sips before leaving behind half of the drink. Our verdict is that the place is charming, the baristas are friendly, and the drinks need some work. We would give it another try!

Google
Grabbed a tea here a couple weeks ago (not my first one here). I'm always in awe of how beautiful it is inside. Everyone is always so nice and caring. I love Nirvana Soul and will continue to support them!

Google
Got an iced latte, and it was pretty good. The highlight was the staff there because they were so welcoming and nice. There is a cute pink sitting area on the second floor where a lot of people were working. The drinks are a little bit on the pricier side, but nothing too

Google
Best place in the neighborhood if you're looking for something original and unique. I had the hazelnut mocha latte: tasty, a little on the sweet side. Not sure this is the place if you're a coffee snob looking for the best gourmet stuff.

Google
Cool place, love the aesthetic! I liked my drink though I was slightly disappointed that they were out of ice when I ordered my drink.

Google
We tried this coffee shop for the first time and we love the vibes here! Everyone was so friendly and the drinks we got were bomb! We got the dirty Diana with macadamia milk and honey lavender drink with macadamia ❤️

Yelp
Loved the artsy, bold vibe at Nirvana Soul--such a colorful, creative space in the SoFa district of San Jose. From the murals to the pink ceiling, the whole place feels like a celebration of local art and culture. I ordered the Lover's Quarrel and wow--delicious. Sweet, spicy, creamy... I'm already trying to figure out how to make it at home. The menu has a lot of unique drinks I'm curious to try, so I'll definitely be back. The butter croissant, though, was a letdown--way too oily and heavy. Not something I'd order again. Service was fine, but nothing special--friendly enough but felt a little rushed and confused almost. Overall, totally worth a stop if you love coffee with personality and a strong sense of place.

Yelp
Nirvana Soul is one of my favorite spots in San Jose. It's stylish, welcoming, and full of good energy. You can tell it's a place made with heart. I had the iced honey lavender matcha with rose--literally divine. Sweet, floral, earthy, and totally unique. The vibes, the music, the art on the walls... everything just clicks. A must if you love supporting local, Black-owned businesses that actually get what community feels like.

Yelp
I LOVE coffee; it's my favorite substance on earth. As such, I drink a whole lot of it and have ideas as to what makes it good. I was blown away by the Mabuhuay latte I had here this afternoon- it ranks among the finest lattes I have had anywhere in my life. Interesting, delicious and the perfect temperature. Perfectly balanced notes of coconut and ube. My husband ordered a teamosa- they were out of some of the ingredients so made him something different but similar- and it was on the house. Cute decor, happy vibe- loved it so much!!

Yelp
Every time I've come to this particular coffee shop or the one in Cupertino it's always the same great environment with amazing taste in music!! I also like the fact that they have artwork done by local artist and it's also for sale! I love the community aspect, this particular coffee Shop offers! Plus, they have delicious combos of coffee and tea, as well as gluten-free items for people with issues with celiac like me!! I will definitely be back here again and again! Both locations the barista's are always friendly, and you can catch them singing the songs in between helping the customers! I think it's cute and personable! You can tell they really love their job and it's a good vibe here!! I suggest everyone try the macadamia nut milk. It's so creamy and sweet!! They also have a great peach green tea!! My favorite is their mushroom latte something or rather and don't overthink it. It does not taste like mushrooms. It actually has a light chocolate flavor!! I will definitely be back here again!!

Yelp
Staff were super friendly, and really helpful as my daughter has dairy allergy. Super cute definitely meets the name amazing mural done by local artist. The spinach tomato quiche was amazing and flaky custard was delicious. My daughter had strawberry maple oatmeal was perfect not too sweet it's vegan and nut free. I got a dirt banana chi was awesome. Chai was spicy not too much banana and coffee was smooth not burnt at all which is hard to find at a lot of coffee shops. My mom got an iced mocha with float of cream was really good chocolate was dark. Definitely give this place a go in downtown and parking on both sides of street

Yelp
I was walking in DTSJ and saw this place. My bf ordered the ube latte and I ordered a matcha latte. I appreciated how the cashier said that the matcha came unsweetened because some don't mention that. I like matcha sweet and unsweetened but today I got lavender matcha w almond milk. For alternative milk, they have almond, oat, and hazelnut. I asked for soy, but they didn't have that so if you want soy I don't know if they were out just today or they don't carry it. Overall the place was cute and the matcha was good. People were inside working etc and there's lots of seating both inside and out.
google avatar

Yelp
This coffee shop is close to my friend's house so I decided to stop by! I tried their Ube latte. I asked for half sweet, which I believe that's where the ube flavor comes from. With that said, I think the ube was subtle but sweetness was perfect for me! I enjoyed my latte! Staff is friendly! The vibes were fun for a coffee shop. Music was bumpin so it's definitely a vibe in there. I wasn't hungry so I couldn't try their waffles - I'll have to try that next time I'm in town.
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
Nirvana soul coffee is so trendy and bright, and has such unique flavored lattes. I had to try their ube coconut latte, and it did not disappoint (I ordered it half sweet with oat milk). The waffles are surprisingly way more filling than I expected. I ordered the bacon cheddar one, but it was a little more undercooked than I normally "waffle." It was good, but not something I would personally order again. I drenched it in syrup and it was still delicious, however (isn't everything once it's drenched in syrup?!). The staff was also super nice and helpful with questions about the menu.

Yelp
Nirvana Soul is one of my favorite spots to get my matcha latte and waffles in downtown San Jose. It is close to the San Jose State University campus and is along the strip with many places you can eat. This particular location has a piano and a 2nd floor balcony where you can sit and work on your craft. The staff here is very friendly and kind. If you are a student from SJSU, you can request for a discount by showing them your student ID. They have a wide selection of drinks you can get, but I always opt for the matcha latte. The matcha is incredible and I like the golden waffles here because it's not too sweet. It goes with everything. They provide you with butter and syrup if you want to add a bit more flavor to it. I like the waffles as it is. The pink, white, and black decor in here is spectacular. I feel very safe as a woman going to this cafe, and they make this a cozy environment for you. I would definitely come back here again.

Yelp
This place is very popular, 9am on a Saturday morning this place was already packed. I came here to study and there was a good amount of seating. I will say the music was set very loud with a lot of bass so it made it hard to concentrate. I honestly would not recommend studying here. I moved from the ground floor to the loft and I could still feel the bass up here and the music was overpowering. Food was good. I ordered the bacon and cheddar waffle but I wish the waffle had more bacon and cheddar. It had the taste of it but as I was eating it I felt the lack of the ingredients. My friend has come here before and she also agreed and stated that previous times that she ate here they definitely had more bacon in the waffle. Over all yummy but could be better. The banana chai was okay- I was very excited for this drink when I looked this placed up online. It was on the sweeter side, and if I were to order again I would ask for less sweetener but the banana chai is a great idea and hope it's better the next time I come. I understand the hype of this place as its very vibe-y but I most likely will not come back to get studying in. Maybe for a hang with a friend, but I would say that the music is still so loud for a productive conversation to happen.

Yelp
Just adding to the praise that this local spot has received over the last 5 years. Since then this cafe has established itself as a go-to community meeting spot for a number of reasons, including the stylish yet comfortable ambiance. Their coffee is high quality and the sweets selection is as tasty as it is unique. They also feature yummy fresh juices from a local business owner in front of the register. Staff are always pleasant and service is quick and efficient. There is metered parking down 1st street which can get full on weekends and evenings, so if it's not a weekend I usually have success parking in the surrounding neighborhood.

Yelp
Friendly fun service with excellent coffee and treats! Love Nirvana Soul coffee. Had the iced Banana Chai with Oatmilk. Usually I don't like sweet drinks but this was delicious. Very refreshing. Also had their chocolate chip cookie. Like a deep dish cookie - all buttery goodness. Looking forward to trying some other beverages soon.
google avatar

Yelp
Very cute decor inside, especially for XMAS. This location is in downtown so all the parking is metered and may be hard to find street parking. However, there are a few parking garages nearby that gives 90 minutes free parking! 2 drinks caught my eye which was the Dirty Diana and the Mabuhay Ube Latte. I got both drinks HOT although they both have ICED options. The Mabuhay Ube Latte has espresso, milk, ube, and coconut. I opted for the whole milk which I enjoy more than other options like almond, oat, cashew etc! The drink was thick and tasty, you can really taste the ube and I'm wondering if they use real ube because of how thick the drink was. The drink has a good sweetness level yet you can still taste the ube and espresso! I would definitely get the Mabuhay Ube Latte again. However, I was not a fan of the Dirty Diana which has chai, espresso, milk and beet. The drink was way too sweet and I couldn't taste the spices much for a chai drink. They definitely need to use more spices in this chai latte! If I were to get the Dirty Diana again, I would ask for half the sweetness, if that is possible! I would definitely come back for the Mabuhay Ube Latte and I also want to try the Honey Lavender Latte next visit!

Yelp
My company brought this coffee into the office during a recent visit. Wow! I've never had Ube in coffee before and I was a little skeptical even thought I love Ube. This was amazing! Such a fun flavor to have in your coffee and the coconut milk made it super creamy. No notes. No need to add anything extra. I wish we had something like this in my area!
google avatar

Elizabeth D.

Yelp
Super cute cafe/coffee shop in downtown SJ. There was an open mic night happening when we got there, it was great to see some people perform while we got our drinks. I got one of the spring specials, a matcha mango drink, which was very good but much more mango than match flavor. I'd come back to try some of the chai drinks as well.
google avatar

Mariell B.

Yelp
The atmosphere and vibes are lively. Very cozy and chill. Definitely a good study spot. I got Mabuhay Ube Matcha, it's so good. The workers recommended me that one. I also ordered a Churro Waffle, very yummy and filling. The workers are really nice and very welcoming. They have a very positive attitude, I admire that. The environment is perfect for me. If you like trying new things, I highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Yelp
I went to get a drink and it was called mango tree matcha and is very good .. I t isn't on the menu but it should be.

Yelp

Yelp
Nirvana Soul catered for one of our company's events and it was a complete hit! They had several unique drinks, but I was surprised that a traditional mocha wasn't on the list of options. My favorite was the rose white chocolate one! It was the perfect balance of flavor and coffee without being overwhelmingly sweet.
google avatar

Hailey K.

Yelp
Cute shop with a ton of speciality lattes which are always what I look for at a coffee shop! I got the Ube latte. Delicious, thick, and not too sweet. Pleasant and kind staff. Definitely recommend for a morning coffee fix.
google avatar

Corinna C.

Yelp
There's not much open at early morning at downtown San Jose. So glad to find Nirvana. It's good!! Nicely decorated inside. Love the painting on the wall and the piano at the front. I got the dirty Diana. It was yum. Pastries was heated and crunchy. Service was great and friendly. Would definitely come back.
google avatar

Julianne R.

Yelp
Stopped by to try the Mabuhay Ube Latte (got it with oat milk). It was lovely! Just the right amount of sweetness and ube flavor. I would absolutely order it again. Don't forget to shake or stir it up before drinking. Congrats to this black-owned business. The interior design is way fun and lively! I will say I wish the employees were just as welcoming as the look and feel of the place, but overall, it was a positive experience.
google avatar

Christina S.

Yelp
Excellent coffee, smooth espresso. I had the Honey Lavender Latte. I don't like mine too sweet and the staff was super helpful in making this drink perfect for me. 2 pumps lavender and 1/2 pump honey. It was perfect and delicious! Will absolutely return when back in town. Great vibes!
google avatar

Antonio S.

Yelp
Ambiance is relaxing. Normally I get the mocha. The staff were friendly and welcoming. I heard the story of how they opened the business. I'm more than happy to support the mission. The waffles are so good. There's so much art around the store also. I'll definitely be visiting the new location at the MLK library soon. I look forward to more sips and fun events at nirvana soul too. Parking - 5/5 Customer Service - 5/5 Return value - 5/5 Quality - 5/5 Recommended dishes Quiche, Bacon Cheddar Waffle, Shot of Espresso, Uhay Ube Latte
google avatar

Derick N.

Yelp
Finally got to try this place and it was sooooo good. The inside has a good amount of seating and the artwork around the store is amazing. The workers are friendly and quick at serving your order as well. The drinks: - Mabuhay ube latte was delicious! Super smooth with a good kick from their espresso. -Matcha tea latte was really good as well The food: -bacon cheddar waffle: this is the MUST GET. it was so goooood. It was flavorful and crispy. -The churro waffle: was okay. I wish there was more cinnamon flavor.
google avatar

Kai M.

Yelp
My new favorite is an iced B's Tea!!!! It's so good and refreshing - perfect for the summertime. It has mint tea, lemonade, peach syrup , honey. Gotta give it a try!!!
google avatar

Tiffany H.

Yelp
This place was popping (line out the door) when I went in, so I knew it must be great. Some menu items looked intriguing to me such as the celebration latte and dirty diana. I asked a friendly stranger for what he had ordered. It was a large mabuhay ube latte with macadamia nut milk. I overheard the people in front of me also ordering that same drink, so I knew I had to try it. Did not disappoint! Sunday hours end early afternoon which is a little bit of a bummer. There are seats and a cute little upstairs loft area to do work or hang out.
google avatar

Noopur D.

Yelp
This coffee shop was sooo cute!! I kept hearing about it and seeing photos but never got around to going, but I was in the area before with a friend and we decided to come here for a drink. We got the hot celebration latte (decaf) and iced ube latte - both soo good, yummy flavors, and the service was amazing!! Staff were so sweet and friendly. The upstairs section is so adorable and had such a cute cozy vibe. I need to come back and try more lattes because everything looked delish!
google avatar

James A.

Yelp
Great coffee, hip spot, beautiful interim design and vibrant colors and friendly service. Hit'em up!
google avatar

Denise M.

Yelp
To start the customer services is numero uno! The barista's really explained the flavor and texture of coffee. Perfect number of choices for every flavor pallet. I ordered Ube and a Banana Latte. There is nothing negative to say. The first coffee was at a medium temperature but the second one, the banana I asked for it extra hot. And that was made to order and they delivered. Ube was smooth and giving mild flavor and lots of comfort. But the banana WOW it was like a cup you want to walk in the snow with good friends or drink by the fire. It was like a cup of banana pudding. I love this. Wish we had one in Pasadena! Well played Nirvana Soul, well played.
google avatar

Alexander B.

Yelp
Great coffee, and lots of specials. The interior is also nice and they have a beautiful mezzanine area. Baristas were quick and welcoming. Wish they had this coffee shop in Indy!

Bryan S.

Yelp
Found my new favorite coffee shop in DTSJ. I love the variety of specialty drinks but also keeps it simple on days I do not want all the foo foo. Everyone behind the counter was super friendly and pointed out different options to choose from. This is a place I could bring a book to enjoy or meet up with friends. Signed up for their loyalty program as I know I will be a regular here.
google avatar

Sherry F.

Yelp
Nirvana coffee has such consistency in their coffees and drinks. I also like getting their waffles just because it always taste better when someone else makes it. I usually get their ube drink with macadamia milk and it never disappoints.
google avatar

Karl G.

Yelp
Came to Nirvana Soul as a quick stop before Christmas in the park. The place was quite popping and had many people waiting for their drinks. Seems like a cute study spot too. We ordered the mabuhay ube latte -- very pretty colors & nice mix of ube, coconut, and coffee. It tasted a bit watery but the initial taste was good. The place is black-owned and regularly hosts community events, love the integration with the locals around here! Parking is limited nearby since it is located in DT SJ.
google avatar

Rimi K.

Yelp
Adorable location. Indoor outdoor seating. Beautiful coffee. Very well done. Everyone obviously knows what they're doing in terms of being a barista. I really enjoyed my short time at this coffee shop. It's located in beautiful downtown San Jose very safe very lovely. I went in the middle of the day and there were a lot of people here. There were different options for seating. There was an area upstairs as well as barstools at the bottom floor and outdoor seating as well. I got my coffee quickly and it was beautifully presented. It was absolutely delicious. Ordered: Chocolate mocha It was super tasty. I finished the whole thing. The coffee is clearly very good quality. Recommend.

Yelp
‍‍ People were AMAZING! Coffee was AWESOME! Churro Waffle was the BOMB! And the vibe was JUST RIGHT ! Nirvana House Blend Espresso Roasted Beans : I *highly* recommend purchasing a bag of this roast to take home with you. It is simply delicious ! One of *the* best & most flavorful roasts I've tried. (And I've tried a lot of them!) It's incredibly smooth, light, & hits you with hints of citrus and pure delight. It's a little pricey @$20/bag but I do think it's worth it. Serotonin Sunrise Tea : Not only is this drink really pretty, it's also deliciously mellow. Initially it tastes a bit like a gummy bear. Once you stir it up, it's mellow & refreshing. I loved that it was not too sweet. Mabuhay Ube Latte: The espresso is smooth & the drink as a whole is light & refreshing.
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
I was looking for a cool drink because I was early to see a show at the nearby California theater and this place looked great. It was interesting even though they close at 7 pm, the place was still busy at 6:30. When you walk in, you can smell the waffles cooking and it smelled tasty but I just got a beverage. The staff was really welcoming and I appreciated the huge menu with a lot of options. My drink was really good.
google avatar

Siya J.

Yelp
Food and drinks were amazing! Service was very diligent and helpful. Ambiance was very uplifting and positive.
google avatar

Tiffany M.

Yelp
Definitely one of the coolest coffee shops in the area. It's bright and clean, the food and drinks are yummy, and the service is friendly, too. I do miss Caffe Frascatti (the coffee shop that used to be here), but I think Nirvana Soul was the perfect business to takeover and take better care of the place. Nirvana Soul has kept one of Caffe Frascatti's memorabilia that's in their front window, and once a month, they'll host an open mic night like Caffe Frascatti used to do. Sometimes when I'm up for it, I like to walk here during my lunch break, order a nice drink, and read. Would definitely recommend this place !
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
The line here is long unless you get there early. Mostly because it's amazing. Love their flavors, highly recommend lover's quarrel. This place is amazing have already come back for a second visit.
google avatar

Katrina M.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try Nirvana soul for awhile and finally got the chance. It's located right by Original Joes in downtown. It's super cute, vibey, and welcoming. They have a great menu with coffees; teas, and some yummy treats to eat. I decided to get the mabuhay latte to go with my roots, and it truly did not disappoint!!! It was perfectly balanced with the sweetness and the ube. Super happy with my coffee and excited to come back!
google avatar

Yash T.

Yelp
TLDR: Great Coffee, fun ambience, pleasant service and knowledgeable baristas The café has an amazing selection of coffees and they even customize for your preferences, loved their matcha and ube options. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Mikayla D.

Yelp
i need a mabuhay ube latte fountain ASAP!!! iced ube latte had a beautiful lavender colored troposphere & a hazy coffee stratosphere. I noticed that it had a crisp caramel toffee aftertaste which made my tastebuds very happy. anyway, best coffee ever!!!!!
google avatar

Rita K.

Yelp
We came here a little over a week ago on a Saturday late afternoon. It's located conveniently across the street from a hotel we were visiting. There was no line when we entered so ordering was easy. Service could be better, we weren't greeted or anything. We tried the mabuhay ube latte and dirty diana. The drinks came out fast. First sip, I barely tasted the coffee on either of them. It tasted more like a sweet drink than anything. The ube tasted like it used the artificial flavoring, and tasted more like a sugar sweet drink than an iced coffee. The dirty diana was OK as well. Overall, we were underwhelmed with the drink and service, and wouldn't come back here. There were good amount of seating inside and outside with folks studying/working. Love the decor on the walls and around the space. Maybe I need to try their traditional coffee drinks and see how that goes.
google avatar

Linda T.

Yelp
Wanted coffee in the AM after a graduation from SJSU. Saw the good reviews and decided to walk there. What a good choice. The vibe was alive and joyful. We had the bacon and cheese waffle and a yogurt parfait with fruit, granola and honey along with our coffees. The waffle had the bacon and cheese in the batter along with scallions. Delicious. The parfait tasted like the honey was perhaps a lavender honey. The waffle was a perfect combination of savory and sweet. Our biggest reason for loving this place was the people who worked there. Happy, helpful and glad you were there. I live in San Clemente California and that's rarely the case. Run to this place. Keep the love alive.

Yelp
Yummy, cool, bold, wild. Nirvana Soul is not just a coffee shop; it's a vibrant community hub infused with soul and flavor. Where eclectic meets cozy; the decor is a rainbow of colors, patterns, and textures that invites you to settle in and stay awhile. The ambiance alone is worth the visit, but it's the unique flavors that truly set this place apart. From their very weird and unique mochi ube treats to their inventive banana-flavored drinks. This is a great spot for gathering friends or getting out of the rut of working from home. Thank you Nirvana Soul for always delivering an experience that nourishes both body and soul!
google avatar

Eddy G.

Yelp
Nirvana Soul Coffee is a pretty nice little spot to grab a bite and coffee (even later in the evening). They have a solid amount of inside space to sit while you enjoy your food or drinks. They even have a top floor loft area with a skylight. Their lattes have a strong flavor and sweetness, which is just how I like it, but if you don't like sweet drinks, you may not want to go for their fancy signature drinks. The only downside is that street parking in the area can be a real pain.
google avatar

Tim R.

Yelp
Welcoming atmosphere and some eclectic options! Had a nice Golden Child, can't wait to try the White Rose Latte, next time!
