The Best Ramen Restaurants in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"This ramen favorite prides itself on its traditional Japanese fare. Not only did the owner and chef Jay Zhou earn his chops learning to make ramen in Nishikawa, Japan, but the noodles are also made fresh from scratch using a Japanese machine. Choose from classics like miso and shio ramen, or try one of the specialties. The Nishikawa Black is a popular option made with pork broth, pork chasu, green onion, menma, kikurage, black garlic oil, fried onion, sesame seeds, seasoned egg, and nori, served with straight noodles. For extra flavor, opt for more of the homemade black garlic oil." - Jamie Phillis

Came here a month ago and the food was delicious 🤤. I may not know how to use chopsticks but I loved the ramen😋😋😋 the gyoza was amazing too. They’re nice and hot 😍😍😍

I visited Nishikawa Ramen on a Monday night around 6pm. The restraunt was busy at this time with almost all the seating being used. My waitress came by fairly quickly and was very friendly. I ordered the Tonkontsu Ramen, extra spicy. It took less than 10 minutes for my food to arrive. The ramen was very good, broth was tasty, and it was spicy to my liking. The 1 thing i think could be improved would be the quality of the noodles. They were a little thin, although they make up for it by giving you a little more in your bowl than other restraunts. The total cost came to $16.29 and was well worth it. I would definitely recommend trying this place out.

Decent food for a decent price. We had the black garlic ramen, really yummy pork gyoza, and egg rolls. The ramen was HEAVY and I needed something light in between bites to clear my pallet but it was full of flavor. The pork was AMAZING but I do wish the noodles weren’t so thin though. They had anime playing which I thought was cool!

I would have never heard of this place had a friend not mentioned it. My curiosity got the best of me and I had to try it. If you like Ramen soup then this is the place for you. It is a small restaurant so space is limited. They also close at 230pm and reopen around 5pm. The environment is cozy, friendly service and quick service of food. Decided to try their chicken ramen soup ... the one with curry flavor 😋 and it was so flavorful for sure. I like curry and this curry was light so it didn't have a strong taste which I loved. Not to shabby when it comes to pricing but I feel that the serving size is on the smaller portions. When it's compared to Cherry Blossoms in which there is a difference in portion size. I like hearty portions versus having a skinny soup. If you want extras or vegetables that is extra so be prepared to pay for that. Otherwise, not to bad for first timer to this place. The only downside is no refillable on drinks because its canned soda or water or sake drinks. I was sad to learn that they didn't even serve iced tea. Happy dining and eating 😋

Google
This was my first time eating here. The dishes that we ordered (except one) was phenomenally flavorful, savory and tasty! I want to try every item on the menu. I will definitely go back again.

Extremely horrible experience, when I say lessons learned i mean lessons learned. The server was extremely rude and and has no professionalism in her work ethic. She took her time to tend to me and my family, I tried being nice keep a calm head because my kids were with me. For a 6,8 and 10 year old to see the rudeness speaks volumes. Now let's get to the food, I made better ramen at home I just thought it'd be a cute experience for my kids. The noodles were horrible none of us finished anything, the rice bowl was actually some what decent. First and last, they don't even deserve the one star. If the service was actually decent, then I'd say they deserve it. It was also really hot ac did not work. Money comes and goes, but an experience is a life time. Guarantee you will find better service and food and at a circle k or McDonald's than here

Google
This place is well reviewed and I wanted to like it more than I did. This is a review of the Tonkotsu ramen which is all I had. Basics: it had a bone broth base but it was a bit thin and lacked flavor. The noodles were on the thinner side but were well cooked. Pretty traditional in terms of other ingredients. They asked if I wanted a soft or hard egg. Maybe it's my fault for saying soft but it was very soft and not the gummy, gel like consistency I'm used to. The white outside was fine, cooked, and appeared lightly marinated but it didn't have much flavor. There was a single piece of Chasu which was decent in size and about 1/4 inch thick. Probably my biggest disappointment was the flavor of the Chasu which lacked flavor and honestly tasted a little old. Overall it was pretty good. I would eat it again but nothing I would crave or go out of my way for.

Google
Food was lacking in many ways. If you want frozen flash fried stuff, you'll be ok. The fried squid was tough, not rubbery, tough and hard to chew. Not like most places, this was whole small squid that were not fresh. Octopus balls were just barely ok. The shrimp wrapped in shredded hash brown potatoes was great. Ramens were lacking flavor. Once you have good stuff it's hard to compare.

Yelp
Nishikawa Ramen, for us, was a pleasantly surprising find, but with some minor misses. Our order: - Tonkatsu Ramen - Nishikawa Black Ramen - Chashu Rice Bowl - Tacoyaki The star of our order was easily the Tonkatsu Ramen. That broth was spectacular. It had a nice velvety and flavor feel and taste. It went very well with the ingredients and was my favorite. The Nishikawa Black was good, you could taste the black garlic. The Chashu rice bowl was different--deep fried pork belly is not what you'd typically expect from a rice dish like this. The Tacoyaki was fine, but maybe used too much oil as some of the Tacoyaki was crispy at the bottom. Service was very engaging and helpful. Open parking lot outside. We had a very good meal :).

Yelp
I brought my Fiance in here for dinner after picking her up from the airport. I was thoroughly impressed with their Ramen. Their flavors were delicious and authentic in both bowls we had ordered. I had ordered mild heat and for once I agreed with the heat which is hard to do sometimes at these ramen spots. We ordered the gyoza and chicken appetizers and both were delicious and fresh. We had ordered Takoyaki and it was inedible. It tasted old and like it had been refried. It was chewy, fishy and not good so they took it off my bill when I had mentioned it... I think. I did deduct a star for that, but me giving 4 stars for a Ramen restaurant in Arizona is a feat in itself as I have been in some of the best Ramen places in Southern California. The inside is small and quaint so I would definitely call ahead before you have to wait. I will come back and try more items when I'm in the mood for Ramen. Keep up the good work!

Yelp
I've been to Nishikawa a few times now, but I visited today for the first time in a year or two. Man, this place is so good! I ordered their new lunch special - the miso pork ramen and gyoza. It was so delicious and savory. Even though it's blazing hot outside, I enjoyed every bite. Super affordable too - the whole combo was only ~$20 after tax and included a drink! My server was also very kind and had speedy service. I was in and out in probably 25 minutes or less. I can't wait until I'm back in the area to dine again.

Raquel V.

Yelp
I previously left a great review because I love this place but today I ordered through DoorDash and the specific instructions I added were not followed. I am not able to eat my food now because of this mistake and DoorDash won't do anything about it ! This is so disappointing. I CLEARLY request spicy edamame and ramen.

Yelp
We were running errands in the area and decided to stop by for a quick lunch. On this visit, we decided to share the pork gyoza and curry ramen with bean sprouts and pork chashu. The pork gyoza was good, it had the right amount of crisp to it, had flavorful filling and the skin wasn't too thick. The curry ramen was hearty and very filling, the flavor of the broth wasn't too strong but still had a nice kick to it. Overall, the service was fast and efficient. With the ambiance being very casual and low-key. This is a solid spot if you're looking for a quick, hearty meal that offers generous portions for the price in the area.

Yelp
I'm not sure if this is the absolute best ramen we've had but this is a nice place to stop for a quick and still really tasty ramen. It's a little smaller inside so sometimes there's a little wait but I think it's worth it! The broth is delicious and the food always comes out quickly. The service is amazing as well and the employees are so kind!

Jennifer C.

Yelp
The temperature is usually extremely hot inside like they're using a swamp cooler or something. We had decent service this time but usually the service isn't that great. Makes me sad because we use to love coming here.

Yelp
My dad was craving ramen while we were in Phoenix and after searching a bunch of different menus, this place spoke to him. He got the miso ramen with medium spice and hard boiled egg and he loved it! He said that it has so much flavor and definitely hit the spot. They had a good lunch special where he got the ramen, gyoza, and a drink for $17.95. The gyoza was great and so was the ika geso. I got the katsu bowl and it was ok but I kinda regretted not getting ramen also. I'm gonna try this place again and get one of their ramen dishes. Parking was easy with a private lot shared with other businesses. Service was great. It wasn't too busy since we went for lunch a little later than usual but the waitress was working solo and was able to keep up with all the tables. She also made recommendations that would be more cost effective...I love that! Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Stopped in today for lunch....ordered the Nishikawa Black Ramen and Gyoza! My go to. Everything was delicious. Ramen is really good here. I highly recommend this spot. Gyoza is so good...steamed and then fried it seems...soft and crisp. Place is comfortable and service is great. I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
We often order from here and have eaten at the establishment. Service is prompt which I appreciate. The ramen broth is delicious here, I always get the spicy tonkotsu or ask them to make the black garlic spicy. I also prefer the curvy noodles. Like others have said, the issue is if you come from a bigger city with amazing epic ramen, this is above average but not the best you've had. But it'll hit the spot when you need it to! Especially as we enter cooler months!

Yelp
Ramen was pretty good Shrimp curry rice was pretty good Katsu was ok. Service was pretty good. Busy inside restaurant, so we got food to go. Ambiance was ok

Yelp
The food was tasty and a good value. The staff was friendly and service was fast. The restaurant had a chill vibe and was very clean. The ambiance was casual/friendly, low-key, great for family meals, friend meet-ups, etc.

Yelp
My favorite ramen place in the valley! Great tasting broth, not too strong of a bamboo or bean sprout flavor like some other places. They also have a good selection of add-ins to customize your ramen to how you like it. Service is also usually pretty good, quick.
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
Been coming here for quite some time. Arrived this time at 11:30am for lunch on a Wednesday. Somewhat busy, but we were seated immediately. Quick scan of the menu QR code...and we ended up ordering what we always order, the Nishikawa Black Ramen. Bowls came out quickly and were of the usual greatness! Very tasty bowls of tonkotsu broth! Noodles were perfect, as were all the other additions. Eggs were soft boiled as we requested and were delicious! Great ramen and great service so we definitely recommend!
google avatar

Jen C.

Yelp
Randomly found this ramen spot when we were craving noodles. My son loved the charsiu pork rice and that was probably the best thing we ordered. The kaarage chicken was nice and hot when it came to the table. Overall decent ramen. Service was great and attentive.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the better ramen spots in the Valley and one I've been to for a while. Been getting Uber Eats on an off for a hot minute but haven't been back for lunch. Weekday lunch used to be super packed, but now I was able to walk in no wait for 2. The great: - Broths: a bit on the lighter side but are the full package I expect. Hearty from tonkotsu, I can actually taste the black garlic oil, and spice levels are great. - Noodles: had a good amount of bite to them, didn't taste like straight up spaghetti. Straight noods were a little thicker than Hakata style. - Appetizers: pretty much can't go wrong with any of them. Oil didn't taste old for those that were fried, gyoza had a nice crispy skirt to them too. - Toppings (most of them): They give you plenty for what's included and nice having the option of both soft and hard boiled eggs The okay/not-so-great: - Chashu: while very meaty, was on the opposite side of firm and fell apart in my chopsticks before I could even take a bite - Menma/Kikurage: One or both of these had a horrible funk to it, didn't taste in house and somehow worse than canned. Left a horrible taste in my mouth and avoided them rest of the meal, but didn't even finish the bowl once I ran out of water. - Topping prices: Your mileage may vary. I love bean sprouts but $2 for a bite and a half wasn't worth it to me. Glad to see Nishikawa is going strong and even seems to be expanding locations, but some of the execution got sloppy and I hope they can turn it around.

Yelp
Everything was delicious from the Ramen extra spicy chicken to the chicken karrage. The service was fast and everything came out hot and ready. The car barbecue sauce could use as it was not that flavorful and you can tell it's barbecue sauce from a jar. The drinks were good the place had a nice vibe to it for Sunday afternoon. Episodes of Hunter. Hunter and Naruto were nice to see. Definitely a great place to get some Ramen, as that was the best part of my experience.
google avatar

Mariah L.

Yelp
It's not as good as the photos make it look and it's very overpriced. Want a tea $5.75 !? The rice bowls and apps are obviously not fresh and just deep frozen food. They served my hot katsu with cold broccoli which was just weird. The ramen was just okay nothing special. It's the kinda place toy go to drink beer and eat white people Japanese food. I will say the service was great and the place was clean.
google avatar

Jerome T.

Yelp
Ramen was good and service was amazing! We've been here 3 times, almost every visit to AZ we make a stop! The restaurant is smaller but we didn't have to wait long!
google avatar

Shavonna M.

Yelp
Ramen is my ALL time favorite comfort food ! And Nishikawa Ramen hit the head on the nail with the definition of comfort food ! Customer service was good ! I was immediately greeted. It's self seating . If you're dining for one sit at one of the smaller tables . The bigger tables are for bigger parties . I came on a Saturday evening around 4pm I'd say it was fairly empty , lite foot traffic. The ambiance is very small and intimate great for a little evening Date or meet up with a few friends . Let's get into What i ordered ! I ordered the spicy edamame ! Disclaimer ( Very Spicy ) yet addictive! Couldn't stop eating them. ( $5.50 ) I usually go for the Tonkotsu at other ramen spots , but this wanted time I wanted to try something different so I decided on Nishikawa Black Ramen ($17) with added corn which was a additional $2 , a sprite and a Fuji Apple Sake ! Overall price $49.91 The flavors overall were amazingly delicious and great portions ! All for a great price for a dinner of one . Highly recommend this place . I love that they play music that goes along with the chill vibe they offer .

Yelp
Amazing ramen, amazing appetizers, amazing service! I recommend Nishikawa Ramen often as it's so tasty!
google avatar

Mansi S.

Yelp
Delicious ramen spot. They have 2 vegetarian options that are almost the same except one has a miso base vs soy sauce base. I got the miso one medium spicy and it was so good!!! Great portion size too. Service is fast but they do get really busy during peak hours. There's a Yelp wait list you can join if you plan to come at a busy time.
google avatar

Josh G.

Yelp
Nishikawa is good ramen for the area, and as far as how it ranks for ramen in general, it's still better than average. If you're coming from a city that has a bigger ramen scene, you'll like this place, but you won't love it. Staff is always friendly and fast. I've only ever had to wait for a table one time on a rainy day, so no surprise there. Parking is super easy here, prices are fine in my opinion. I always order the Nishikawa Black ramen.
google avatar

Christina W.

Yelp
I went to Nashikawa last night and not only were they rude to us when we came in, ordering us food put our name on the waitlist in a short tone, when we did already, but after we sat down we waited 45 minutes and did not get asked what we wanted to drink OR get our order taken. We just walked out. Another couple next to us was there since we arrived and still did not get their food.

Gracie G.

Yelp
Love coming here! The food is always good and the service is good since it's a small place. We like to come here every few weeks and get their ramen! I just tried their taro milk tea and it was delicious! I also enjoy the melon soda.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
The BEST Ramen in AZ! Seriously, get the Curry Ramen. I promise you've never had anything like it before. Out of this world flavor and quality ingredients. Service is always lightning fast! My wife and I love dining in, when we're in the neighborhood. Very comfortable and fun atmosphere.
google avatar

Nette B.

Yelp
I'm glad I got to dine here. First, check in on the Touch Pad. What was strange is that the YELP waitlist on the YELP app was closed but open on the touch pad. I signed up and waited about 25 minutes. I tried to order Chicken Karage, but they were sold out. I ended up ordering the following: Gyoza, Nishikawa Ramen, and washed down with White Peach Sake. The ramen was delicious and full of flavor. I loved the fatty broth and tender/soft cha shu. The gyoza was also good. Nicely, pan fried on oneside. Overall, it's a great spot and a small restaurant so the wait can be long. Looks like a hot spot for locals.
google avatar

Deanny R.

Yelp
Every time I crave for Japanese food specifically Ramen, Nishikawa is my go to restaurant. I love the flavors of their ramen and their chicken karaage is to die for. Customer service experience is always a pleasure to dine in.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing spot for veggie ramen!! I had been craving veggie ramen but it seems every spot was either closed Sundays or deep into Tempe so I ordered pick up from here! It was ready fast, I was worried it would get cold since I was late to pick up, but it wasn't! Hand off was easy, got my food quickly. The broth is packed separately so everything doesn't get soggy. They have two veggie options, I got the veggie miso which has the curved noodles. I love it! The crispy onion on topic was perfect and the veggie to noodle to broth ratio was on point! Pricing was as expected. Really good stuff and I'd love to come try the other veggie ramen option they have!
google avatar

Heidi M.

Yelp
Cute little ramen spot! Very clean and friendly staff! Ramen was yummy and the price and portion was good! We will definitely be back!

Yelp
Very nice portions will get you very full fresh and flavorful, food was nice and hot . Service was great very small intimate place great vibe .

Yelp
Came here on a Monday night for dinner and it was about a 15 minute wait. Got seated and quickly scanned the menu and knew what we wanted, 3 orders of the black garlic oil ramen and an order of the squid legs. Food came out within 10 minutes of ordering and everything was delicious. Good portion size, very full after eating. Would recommend coming here if you're in the mood for ramen :)
google avatar

Jeanette A.

Yelp
Amazing isn't enough. I was craving ramen and this definitely hit the spot. Im so glad I chose to come here. I started off with some dumplings and ended with the chicken broth ramen. I will definitely come back and make this a regular stop.

M B.

Yelp
As always, the Nishikawa Black is A-MAZING! Flavor profile is off the charts, so delicious with perfect umami infused throughout. Can't go wrong with their Japanese Mango Cream Soda. Want to try the Melon version but I love the Mango version so much. You HAVE to at least try the Nishikawa Black at least once in your life. Put it on your bucket list!
google avatar

Ursula D.

Yelp
Delicious! I wasn't sure what to expect. We ordered the Gyoza, Miso Ramen and Nishikawa Black ramen. The Gyoza was tasty. The two ramens' broth could not be more different. I didn't expect that, but you could tell the difference in the two. My favorite was the Nishikawa Black... rich, dark, garlicky and complex broth. This ramen didn't have any corn, which is why I chose it. With the perfectly cooked straight noodles, I could not be happier! Return Factor: 80%
google avatar

Melissa N.

Yelp
Pick up my family from the airport and searched up a ramen place and this one popped up with decent stars . Menu through a QR code . Basic type of ramen. Small restaurant but clean and waitress are nice . It's simple the menu . So I got the tonkostu and my daughter got the miso . Soft egg was bomb , ramen is good as well . Appetizer pork gyoza is good too.

Ashley S.

Yelp
Best Ramen around! If you want a creamier ramen with a bold flavor, this is the place to go!
google avatar

Sam G.

Yelp
Some of the best ramen I've had in Phoenix. Pork shashu was cooked perfectly. It's a small restaurant, so they have a wait list you're able to join upon arrival. It wasn't too long of a wait (especially for a holiday), and food came out quickly and was all delicious.

Troy T.

Yelp
The staff here is really nice and the service was quick. Although the location is kind of small but the flavor of the food is big! I went here during lunchtime and got the Shoyu and karaage and it was really good and full of flavor. Definitely worth a try.
google avatar

Monica O.

Yelp
My 12 year old grandson wanted to try some ramen so a few us met up for lunch on a Sunday to let him give a try. We arrived around 1pm and was easily able to get a table. After checking out the menu I went a miso ramen and make it spicy and added a soft-boiled egg and suggested the same for my grandson. He went with a plain broth with just noodles and the soft-boiled egg, which he enjoyed. My spicy miso ramen was delish as well! Glad to have tried Nishikawa Ramen and exposing my grandson to some new foods to him, looking forward to trying new food adventures with him.

Yelp
Lots of tasty options to choose from. The food and service were fantastic. I highly recommend coming here!
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch at the Indian School location. The Tonkatsu ramen was flavorful with expertly cut vegetables and mushroom. The broth was balanced but a bit less assertive than optimal. Enjoyed the chashu, pork belly, for its juciness and richness. Overall I'd dine here again.
google avatar

Loren T.

Yelp
Favorite ramen in Phoenix. High quality ingredients and service. Cozy and comfy seating.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Long time Ramen instant noodles fan. However, it seems that REAL ramen noodles might not be for me. The noodles I loved, but I'm just not that adventurous with "strange" veggies... I love carrots, mushrooms, radishes, just about anything you can get on an American restaurant salad, but I'm a picky 10 yr old when it comes to the more exotic stuff... But, that's my hang up and has no bearing on this place. So, 5 stars for the great noodles, the delicious broth, and the great service. I do want to try another style some day.
google avatar

Steve F.

Yelp
Amazing ramen and gyoza, had the Miso regular and Tonkatsu extra spicy and they were amazing. My lips are still tingling . The gyoza was nice and crispy and hot, but oddly came after the ramen was served. Staff is polite, and they had two servers for the relatively small and intimate dining room. It's very cozy and staff were very polite and attentive. Food doesn't sit for long before it's served!! Parking is pretty good, but can get congested during dinner time. I highly recommend coming here, just 14 mins from Old Town Scottsdale. Two thumbs up!!
google avatar

Byron M.

Yelp
Your average ramen spot, not to bad or not the super best. Service was great, came around 6 and the restaurant opened at 5 and they were already out of the chicken karaage. Instead I ordered the Gyoza's and spicy edamame which were both good. The Gyoza's weren't as crispy as I prefer and a bit soggy. For the entree I tried out the Nishikawa Black ramen with extra chasu pork and had to pay a little extra for a dash of corn... the broth was initially good and spicy but it was overwhelmed by the amount of fried garlic they put on top. Noodles were great, nice and firm. Overall, I'd say stop by if you're extremely craving ramen but have no other options. Otherwise, for the price you can definitely go to other places for better quality and bang for your buck.

Yelp
Food is good, and also they have nice drink come out recently . I like the Thai tea and yaluk mango green tea. Price is acceptable cuz all the restaurants are pricey now.

Yelp
I have heard Sooooo many good things about Nishikawa and was super disappointed. From the second my daughter and I walked in we were stared at by the server and I just assumed it was seat yourself as they didn't greet or say anything to us lol Okayy. I figured I don't care as long as the food is good. This place is small and we sat for a good 5 minutes or so before I had to ask for menus. I didn't see any QR code's for a menu on the table (because I looked). We were brought waters after and had our order taken. I had really wanted the pork nishikawa bowl but they were all out of pork and I was told all they had was beef. I went with that. My daughter ordered the Tonkatsu Ramen which has pork in it and was served with it. Assuming it's a different cut of pork than what's used in the bowl. The food was served hot and tasted okay. The beef had good flavor as I normally order chicken or fish whenever I eat out. My daughter enjoyed the ramen. The service was super lacking. My 11 yo daughter said "I think our server hates her job" if an 11 yo can call that out it's bad. I don't expect Mary Poppins cheery but leave your attitude at the door when you show up for work or don't be there at all. Unfortunately, I can't recommend dining in. Takeout might be a better option.
