How Canadian Restaurant Hy’s Steakhouse Ended Up in Waikīkī, Hawai‘i | Eater

"A century-old mochi shop often cited as an example of Honolulu’s tendency to preserve original storefronts and nostalgic businesses, remaining largely unchanged and cherished by locals as part of the city’s cultural continuity." - Dan Clapson

Trek for Treats to 11 of the World’s Most Unique Candy Stores

"From the outside, Nisshodo Mochiya doesn’t look like much. Housed in a vaguely industrial building, its nondescript door is an unobtrusive slip of gray between a garage and a collection of electric meters. Over the door, a hand-painted sign reads “NISSHODO - MOCHI - MANJU - CHICHI DANGO” in black and muted gold block letters. Open the door, however, and you’ll be faced with a sugary rainbow: Rows of pastel candy, bulbous as animated mushrooms, nestled in a glass case. Offerings include chichi dango, a chewy, lightly sweet dumpling made of glutinous rice flour and coconut milk, as well as mochi and manju, sweet buns made of rice and wheat flour, respectively, and filled with anything from bean paste to peanut butter (regulars rave about the latter). Nisshodo makes these sweets in a uniquely Hawaiian style, with a mochi that’s softer and less chewy than Japanese varieties. Opened in the 1920s, Nisshodo is one of the oldest Japanese candy stores in the United States. It’s also a repository of a Japanese-Hawaiian culinary tradition that stretches back to the mid-19th century, when the first Japanese immigrants came to Hawaiʻi as indentured laborers on sugar plantations. Within a few decades, Honolulu was sporting a lively Japanese neighborhood, complete with bakeries, wine shops, hotels, and restaurants catering to Japanese immigrants and their families. One of these immigrants was Asataro Hirao. He was already living in Honolulu when, in the 1910s, he decided to return to his home city of Hiroshima for a visit. That’s where he learned to make Japanese confections. When he returned to Honolulu, Nisshodo Mochiya was born. Hirao tweaked traditional recipes, adapting them to local Hawaiian ingredients, and his descendants continue to make sweets based on his creations to this day. The shop is so rooted in tradition, Hirao’s successors were using his original vertical mixer until just a few years ago. And the whole family continues to come together around the holidays, making mochi to fill the rush of  New Year’s orders from customers who have been returning to the shop for decades. Everyone has their favorites, but the pink-and-white chichi dango, wrapped in translucent white paper and powdery with starch, is Nisshodo’s best-selling item. “We sell out of chichi dango pretty much every day,” Mike Hirao, the shop’s third-generation owner, told Hawai’i Magazine. So if you want a bite of the cloud-light sweet, it’s best to follow one piece of advice: Come early." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The Japanese holiday is widely celebrated in Hawaiʻi, where girls mark the occasion by arranging doll collections and eating a special, diamond-shaped, tri-colored mochi, called hishi mochi. Google
This mochi store is super great on Oahu. You guys gotta try this mochi. So fresh and so delicious. This is a great gift if your traveling interisland to give. They have all kinds of different flavors, coconut, lychee, green tea, peanut butter and more. Come and check these ladies out. They make the best mochi on island.

Yannis Ortegon

Google
My favorite mochi in town. My favorite flavor is the lilikoi one. Is so tasty. A lot of people doesn’t like the texture but for my is amazing . Also I don’t eat them every day. The girl at the counter is very gentle. They don’t have so many stalls for parking . But because is like a on the go store, the parking was easy. Also they open at 7:00 am so the is very convenient when you need to have your mochis early in the morning

Google
Absolutely fantastic mochi. This place is such a hidden gem surrounded by construction companies. Come early as they close at 2 pm! $10 minimum for credit cards.

Google
This is a famous Hawaii mochi store, and very good. It is located in Kalihi, Honolulu, Hawaii.

Google
Got to finally try this famous mochi store and I was not disappointed! Their mochi is so soft here. We got all of their flavors and they all tasted fantastic and fresh. My favorite was the red bean one (azuki). Great flavor!

Google
When you want fresh mochi, this is apparently THE place to go ... lots of flavors and styles, plus they have arare snacks for sale as well. Chichi dango is the most popular - it’s the only one I believe that doesn’t have a bean filling ... all the rest have a white or black or adzuki bean filling. Those with Western palates should be aware that these are not super sweet confections!

Google
I called in to order two trays of Nisshodo Mochiya mixed mochi and Chici Dango, for an event. The trays were ready and packed extremely well and so colorful! The lady who helped me on the phone was very accommodating and helpful! Their mochi is, I feel, the best on the island. Slightly sweet, chewy glutinous rice cakes with different fillings. I can't name any favorites, everything was good!! Nisshodo is located at 1095 Dilingham Blvd 5 (Kalihi), opens from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., closes on Sunday. It's inside a warehouse that is behind a strip mall.

Patricia C

Google
They have premade some pound size chichi dango boxes, which is real convenient since those are their most popular item. But when people in front of you order 18 boxes at a time, there's still a wait...

Yelp
I've known about Nisshodo for a long long time. It's always been in the back of my head to visit but the hours never worked for me. I'm happy to report that I finally got to visit thanks to my friend Li Y. for surprising us! We arrived at the mochi and manju shop on a weekday morning. As one of the only customers, we had the display case to view all to ourselves. Plenty of traditional and fruit-flavored mochi and Manju to choose from. Plus their famous chi chi dango. Service was speedy and informative and we were kindly helped. My friend picked up a Variety Pack for us to share. These were a mixture of mochi with various fillings and chi chi dango. The mochi is fresh and so soft. The flavor of the filling was not too sweet, a nice texture, and tasted exactly like what I'd imagine it to be. The chi chi dango was a soft bite-sized goodie. I enjoyed everything I tried and wish I could've gone when I used to work nearby. For those wanting quality, old-school, affordable mochi and manju Nisshodo Candy Shop has been the go-to spot for decades! It's a timeless place with a variety of Japanese goodies and warm service. They're a bit hard to find as their location is in the back but there's parking out front. Mahalo!

Yelp
A little hard to find. It's in an industrial area. Just follow the base of the big metal antenna structure and you will be right in front of the store. They sell their mochis in some of the grocery stores, but I wanted to try them fresh from their storefront. Really friendly service and their mochi is nice and soft. They had quite a few different flavors which were nice. lychee - fragrant and delicate flavor lilikoi - fragrant and delicate flavor melona - tasted like the ice cream peanut butter - not bad, but I was really hoping for it to taste similar to the mochi from Maui Speciality Chocolates.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
The BEST mochi on the island. You will not be disappointed. I have done my best over the years to try all the different flavors.
google avatar

Cynthia S.

Yelp
A hidden gem for Japanese mochi and sweets. The mochi dough is soft and chewy but I wasn't a fan of the fillings. They tasted quite artificial to me (the best one was red bean) but it was worth a visit if you're not able to get fresh mochi back home
google avatar

Cynthia P.

Yelp
I have never considered myself crazy about mochi but still wanted to see what the hype was about for this particular shop. So glad we tried the fruit mochis and dango! They were deliciously soft and chewy. Dango was so good that my family said I should have bought a whole pound. Next time for sure! Passion fruit mochi had the least flavor of the three mochis I bought. If it wasn't labeled I would not have known what I was tasting honestly. Lychee had light recognizable flavor and melon had the strongest flavor. Chi chi dango, though flavorless and without filling, was still a standout because of the great texture that made it so fun to eat. Bring cash if you are just sampling a few items. $10 minimum to use credit card. Can't wait to try again!!!!!
google avatar

Elaine L.

Yelp
If you want the B E S T chichi dango on-island, Nisshodo is it. The taste and texture are consistently perfect; there is absolutely no better place for chichi dango. They also have other flavor-filled mochi, but I personally don't like fillings in mochi. 1lb is $12. If you call ahead for more than 1lb, they can put it in a larger box, so it looks more presentable at gatherings or as a gift! Parking is limited, but I've never had issues at other local stores for a quick in-and-out for mochi.
google avatar

Lloyd C.

Yelp
Some friends visited Oahu and brought back some mochi from Nisshodo Candy Store! They are oddly shaped, but oh, so good. Azuki, Peanut Butter, and Coconut!
google avatar

Kristin C.

Yelp
Mochi is an excellent idea for a valentine gift. I'd prefer mochi over flowers or chocolates anytime. The down side is it's perishable and best to be eaten right away. Should be kept in a cool spot. So soft and sweet, better than candy. My usual is chichi dango. They sometimes have them pre-packed in 1 pound boxes and left on the counter. If you need more or less, the cashier will get it from the back, you just need to ask. When I made my purchase on 1/10/24, the chichi dango, was $12 per pound, and contain 20-24 pieces per pound since it's sold by weight the amount of chichi dango pieces per pound varies. They are located near Honolulu Community College, parking can get difficult at times.

Evelyn F.

Yelp
Fresh mochi at reasonable prices. I don't think it could get any fresher unless u made it yourself. Picked up a couple boxes on the way to the airport to visit family in mainland. Everyone enjoyed the fresh treats.
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
Nisshodo is one of my favorite mochi places. If I'm anywhere near here, I always will make a stop. I love their blueberry and strawberry chi chi dango and their lilikoi and melona mochi. The regular chi chi dango is $11/lb and fruit flavor (strawberry, blueberry, orange) is $12/lb. Most mochi and manju is $1.25/piece. I always call ahead to order so it's easy to pick up. Sometimes it can be hard to contact them over the phone but just keep trying. The place is very small. They can make custom party trays which I like to order for parties. They also have some assorted bentos. I've even taken boxes to the mainland as omiyage. Definitely will be back again.
google avatar

Haeun J.

Yelp
After seeing rave reviews of this place, I knew I had to drop by before returning home. It is pretty close to the airport, so I was excited to be able to take an assorted box back home... can't say the mochi truly made it back home because I ended up eating them all at the airport. I asked for one of each - lilikoi, lychee, coconut, peanut butter, melona, green tea, plain mochi, red bean, etc. The peanut butter and the lilikoi are STARS of the show. I also tried their chichi dango, and those were good as well, but I enjoyed their mochi more because of the fillings. The "dough" part of this is the best though - chewy, soft, fresh, melts in your mouth feeling. This is a place I'm going to have to come back to if I'm back in HI.
google avatar

Helen V.

Yelp
The mochi was soft, fresh, and tasty! My favorite flavors were lychee, peanut butter, and melona because the flavors stood out the most. The shop is small and in the corner of industrial business area. Make sure to bring cash if you only want a couple of mochis. If you pay with card, they need a $10 minimum.
google avatar

Al M.

Yelp
Economy, Covid, economy, dang blasted work on Dillingham! I remember when chi chi dango was $6/lb for several years. I bought the variety pack in October 2023 for my brother's gf. It was $12. Today, March 21, 2024, 5 months later, it cost $16. That's a big jump! Oh well, it's my treat yourself week. The taste is still good. I just wish prices would not go up so quickly. Times are changing, and some for the better, others not so much. At least the taste of Nisshodo mochi will remain.
google avatar

Charis W.

Yelp
Found out about this place through some friend recommendations. It is tucked away in an industrial lot amongst all these other construction companies. It is really inconspicuous, but truly a hidden gem in Honolulu. The mochi offerings include lilikoi, lychee, coconut, peanut butter, red bean, melona, green tea, plain mochi. EVERYTHING WAS SO GOOD. The lilikoi, lychee, and coconut were by far my favorites. You can't get mochi in this flavor anywhere else. The mochi itself was incredibly soft and chewy. The filling was perfectly sweet. I found the red bean feeling to be a little bit too sweet. I wish we had time to go back for a second visit during our trip!
google avatar

Dora H.

Yelp
Delicious chi chi dango! Great customer service! Called ordered confirmed pick up time and it was ready!
google avatar

Lily T.

Yelp
I love mochi and this place was one of the 2 I had to try. It is located in like a commercial area and parking can be tricky, but if you go in quickly and order, it should be fine. I had a variety of flavors, Passionfruit, ube, mango, peanut butter, plain mochi. The mochi part is nice and soft and delicious. But the flavored ones were made with bean and flavor, which I am not a fan of. Other than that it was pretty good, I just not a big fan of bean filling on the inside.
google avatar

Steven O.

Yelp
First stop on my Saturday cross island food tour. I'm usually not a huge mochi person but made an exception for this local classic. Got a variety of flavors and each was amazing, I couldn't choose a favorite. The actual shop is in a small industrial plaza with limited parking so be warned.

Yelp
Nisshodo is a small, traditional Japanese confectionery shop that's off-the-beaten path. Established over 100 years ago, their recipes were mastered and perfected in Hiroshima, Japan by Asataro Hirao who then brought it over to Hawaii and his family has been continuing the tradition ever since. The shop is hidden from the hustle and bustle and honestly, if I wasn't intentionally seeking out a business like this, not sure I would have found it! It's located in a warehouse looking building with a simple sign outside their door. Inside you'll find a small variety of treats of manju, filled mochi, chi chi dango, and more. They also offer pre-boxed mochis with all individually wrapped chi chi dango or a mixed variety of filled mochi and chi chi dango. Their chi chi dango is soft and has the perfect chew and the individually wrapped ones make it easy to share with friends and family. The chi chi dango with kinako is also tasty! I also love the filled mochis with my favorites being the lilikoi and tsumami (lima bean) mochi. I don't think you could go wrong with any of their offerings really. Get a bunch and try a variety! They open really early and I find it very convenient to pop-in the store right after flying into HNL as they're really close to the airport. Do get here early as they seem to sell out fairly quickly. I highly recommend this shop if you love mochi and Japanese treats.

Yelp
One of the last Mom & Pop shops to make fresh mochi and other confectioneries. Is a must visit if you're visiting the island or just need a snack! Located in Kalihi within the complex on the corner of Dillingham and Kokea (across Honolulu Community College), and tucked in the back side of the complex. Personally, I drive in from Kokea and drive straight back till you see the antenna on the left and Nisshido on the right. Parking is very limited and place can get crowded, so you might have to hunt for parking within the complex or the street parking on Kokea. Don't forget to checkout their hours before making your way down. They close by 2pm. Once inside, you'll see the display case that shows what they have left, and some standing room to either wait to order or wait to pick up your goodies. My go to is the box of Chichi Dongo. These individually wrapped mochis are soft, chewy and delish! Sometimes we also pickup a bag of senbei, since Ishiharaya closed, and even a bag of Okoshi to mix things up from just mochi. My other personal favs of mochi include, Brownie, Peanut Butter and Lilikoi. Next time you're in the mood for treats during the daylight hours, check out Nisshido's in Kalihi. Till my next stop, Grind On, Pau!
google avatar

Monica H.

Yelp
, I'll take you to the candy shop! This cute little candy shop is tucked away next to some auto body shops and other businesses where you would not expect to find a candy store. This was actually our first stop after we landed in Hawaii! They have a big selection of different Mochi, Manju and ChiChi Dango. There was a line formed to get some of sweet deliciousness but it moved fast! Inside, you'll find all sorts of colorful and flavorful goodness for your picking. We really enjoyed the ChiChi Dango and that seemed closed to being sold out by the time we got there. We highly recommend making a stop here if you're a fan of Mochi. Service though they weren't so nice and it felt like they were just ready to close.
google avatar

Yelp
If people ask me for recommendations for Hawaii, Nisshodo Candy Store is at the top of my list. I cannot recommend this place enough. I bought a bunch for people to try and give as gifts and they all enjoyed it! Many even went and bought their own afterwards. The mochi is so very soft and the flavor is amazing without being too sweet! Mindblowingly good.
google avatar

Samantha D.

Yelp
When I came here, I honestly questioned if there was a mochi store here at all. It's located in a kind of industrial looking area, and the storefront is almost hidden. The only indication I had that I was in the right place was that I saw someone making mochi in the open garage. I tried a few different types of mochi. My favorite would have to be the lilikoi, habutai, and lychee. I thought they were the most fragrant from the ones I tried. The melon tasted very much like melon, but it wasn't for me. Green tea didn't really have a green tea taste to it. The peanut butter isn't a hit you in the face type of peanut butter. The peanut flavor is subtle, but prominent enough. The mochi is super fresh and the consistency is good. With small family owned mochi shops becoming increasingly rare (Benkyodo in San Francisco closing roughly a year ago), having this on the Island, really was special.
google avatar

De T.

Yelp
2nd visit here. Somewhat hard to find, but since I've already been here in 2019, I knew where it was. Great mochi as always.
google avatar

Maritess C.

Yelp
Hubby, daughter and I came here to get some flavored mochi. It's so fresh and delicious. I'm surprised we haven't been here before but this place was amazingly good. Hubby got 4 of each flavor. We got peanut butter, lychee, lilikoi and melona. All were pretty good although peanut butter and mochi isn't too great of a combo for me. I would rather have peanut butter and chocolate together to be honest but all the other flavors were delicious. They take card and cash. The ladies working here were super nice. Parking is directly up front. I highly recommend coming here for fresh mochi. So good. I definitely will be back for more.
google avatar

Patrick W.

Yelp
Old school mochi store, making fresh mochi every day. Definitely one of the gems on the island and State. You can build your own mochi box or buy a pre-made assortment of most of their mochi selections. They also have pre-wrapped chi chi dango boxes. One is just plain and the other is assorted fruit flavors.
google avatar

Marissa K.

Yelp
Good ol school traditional Japanese mochi. Love it! Love their chichi dango mochi. Another one of my fave is their peanut butter mochi. Their mochi is so soft! Not overly sweet and just so good! I got a box of their strawberry and coconut chichi dango and a box of assorted stuffed mochi. When you're in Kalihi, this is a must stop over!
google avatar

Caitlin P.

Yelp
I first came here in 2020 with some family friends and the daughter told me "the Mochi here tastes like fluffy clouds, you have to try it" and she was right. The mochi is light with amazing quality! There are many flavors and the workers are so patient as you choose. It is located in what looks like a small warehouse and yes you are at the right place. Walk in and have your taste buds be satisfied. This place is a must every time I come to Oahu.
google avatar

Sharon M.

Yelp
Love this spot for Chi Chi Dango! They offer original flavors as well as fruit flavors. The original flavors cost $10 a pound and the fruit flavors cost $12 a pound. Each Chi Chi Dango comes individually wrapped and they are so delicious. The employee who took my order was so sweet and kind. I called the day prior for a pick up order and the process was quick. When I picked it up the next day, there were two other costumers in line. The line went quick and they had my order ready to go. They are located off of Dillingham right across HCC in the back warehouses. There is a door to their little shop with a counter filled with their stuffed mochi and other mochi goodies. The mochi is great for any occasion and is really good. If you like mochi, definitely worth a stop, but be sure to call in advance if especially if you have a big order and remember that they are only open from 7am-2pm Mon-Sat.
google avatar

Kevin L.

Yelp
Broad selection of mochi and manju, though the grittiness of the mochi surprised me. I think I've been spoiled by the silky clouds that Benkyodo in San Francisco used to put out (RIP), and that this is just the Nisshodo house style. We got a box of eight, and definitely try the lilikoi one! Chichi dango for next time since they were out when we stopped by.
google avatar

Tyler M.

Yelp
Small shop that's hidden in an industrial area of Honolulu. It's definitely a hidden gem! We ordered one of everything and everything was delicious. Some of the best mochi I've had. Great prices too.

Yelp
Nisshodo Candy Store is a true hidden gem nestled within an industrial park, making it a delightful discovery for those willing to seek out its culinary treasures. While finding parking might be a bit challenging due to its inconspicuous location, the effort is undoubtedly worth it. Once inside, you're greeted with a tantalizing array of handmade mochi that's sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. The variety is staggering, and choosing from their extensive selection is a delightful adventure in itself. From traditional flavors like matcha and red bean to more exotic options, there's something for everyone. We opted for a mixed assortment of mochi, and every bite was a delectable revelation. The mochi had the perfect balance of chewiness and tenderness, with the flavors bursting forth in every bite. Whether you're a mochi connoisseur or a first-timer, Nisshodo's offerings are sure to impress. While the location might be off the beaten path, Nisshodo Candy Store's handmade mochi is a testament to the hidden culinary treasures that can be found in unexpected places. If you're in the mood for an authentic mochi experience that's sure to leave your taste buds singing, don't miss this charming little shop.

Yelp
I grew up on Nisshodo. Love the freshness and price of these delicate sweet pillows of deliciousness. Other places are double or triple the price, but Nisshodo has managed to keep their products affordable. Their new sampler pack is a stroke of genius. I have been behind tourists before trying to figure out what to get. Now you can pick a pack with one of every mochi and some chichidango and be done. The presentation is so awesome and colorful. Unfortunately, they close an hour earlier than pre-pandemic at 2 pm instead of 3 pm. The rail construction also makes it a nightmare to get here, but it's well worth the frustration to swing by.

Yelp
Love this mochi place! It was my first time and I was able to squeeze in right before closing. The storefront is very small but they do have mochi's in the back, so don't be afraid to ask if they still have flavors that are not in the display. Our favorite mochi flavor was the Lychee! It tasted like REAL lychee - not the artificial jelly type. The mochi texture is amazing! So soft and just the right amount of chewy!! Be careful if you have a sulfa allergy - some of the mochis have sulfa ingredients. They have signs on the ones that do! Will definitely be back!!

Yelp
Came here, granted a little later in the day for some things to take back to the mainland and for local friends. The space is small and when we looked inside it was crowded so we waited outside until some folks came out. Once inside there was an older lady dead set on not helping us. Think she pegged us for...not sure what. Another lady helped us and even the customer behind us kept saying they're first, but she was determined to limit of purchase by rush offering to the guy behind us, lol. Not sure what it was, but her look right off the bat said she didn't like us to the point she made the customer behind, my husband, me and the person helping us super uncomfortable. She made me so uncomfortable I forgot to put in order for chi chi dango. I'm now hesitant to come by myself even though we like the mochi. And not sure if it's realistic to bother friends or family who come here all the time either.

Yelp
Wow, the mochi here is incredible! We were able to try the chi chi dango as well as several flavors of mochi. I won't go into details of each type of mochi as they were all executed well. I think it ends up being your personal preference in terms of what flavors you enjoy. That said, melona was one of our favorites! The chi chi dango and mochis were incredible soft, chewy, and consistent. The flavored mochis were not overpowering, and they did not taste "fake" at all. If you want to try all the different flavors, be sure to go there early. We went around noon, and they were already out of several flavors. Prices are on point and won't break the bank, even if you several different types of mochi. Note the location is a bit odd as it is in the middle of an industrial area with lots of different non-food shops around it. If you feel like you're in the wrong area, chances are you should keep going as you're likely in the right spot. We wish we could have gotten a lot more to bring with us, but the mochi is incredibly fresh and will not keep for very long.

Yelp
This place never disappoints. I don't even eat mochi... but his is so soft and fresh tasting. The lychee is my favorite. Chi chi dango is so yummy it has gone up from 10.00 to 13.00.

Yelp
Growing up in Hawaii, mochi was one of my favorite treats. Nisshodo sells my favorite type of mochi, chichi dango. Because they're individually wrapped it's easy to share and a great gift to bring back to the mainland. Even though I can get similar mochi in CA it's not the same. Because the chichi dango is so popular they have 1lb boxes packed and ready to go. You can freeze the mochi (so it lasts longer) and take out one piece at a time (let it thaw to room temperature). I usually buy a few pounds to take home. This trip I purchased: Chichi dango (5/5) individually wrapped, soft, sweet, and a perfect bite of mochi Peanut butter mochi (4/5) crunchy peanut butter filling in a soft mochi exterior Coconut mochi (4/5) sweet, moist, coconut in a soft mochi Lilikoi mochi (2/5) tastes artificial and frankly not my favorite flavor Lychee mochi (4/5) subtle lychee flavored mochi with what looks like white bean paste Kakimochi (5/5) crunchy and flavorful Depending on when you go, service can be nice or rushed. Nisshodo is very popular during the holidays, especially around new year. So plan accordingly. Prices have gone up over the years but that's to be expected. The mochi is still very good for the price. Nisshodo is located in an industrial looking area. It's nothing fancy but it's just how it's been for decades. It just works! Parking is usually plentiful and not an issue (except during the holidays). I'm happy that old school places like Nisshodo still exist and thrive. It's still producing delicious mochi and a staple in my household. I'll definitely be back! LOCATION: 4/5 FOOD: 5/5 SERVICE: 4/5 VALUE: 4/5 AMBIANCE: 4/5 PET FRIENDLY: no CLEANLINESS: 4/5 PARKING: 4/5

Yelp
This is one of my regular stops when I visit Oahu. All the mochi is freshly made daily. Location is difficult to find the first time.

Yelp
Cute little shop, hidden amongst larger businesses (looked like they sold construction related things like wood/tiles). Lots of assorted flavors of fresh mochi, try them all! * no fresh fruit mochi, but this is still worth trying if you're nearby

Yelp
I have been to this place since I can remember. They have always been the best and I always stop by to bring it back to the mainland with me! They do not compare to the manju-ya there.

Yelp
Food: Homemade mochi- what can be better than that! This is a very old establishment and my friends who knew I had such a sweet tooth recommended I come and check this place out and I'm so glad I did! I ended up getting a custom pack with various flavors. All of them were delicious- the mochi outer layer was nice and chewy while the fillings were reasonably sweet and not overpowering! Cost: A little expensive but to me this place is a historical boutique of old style goodies which was worth it to experience a taste of how these mochis have been made for years in the past! Environment: The store is very small in the front- one can easily walk by and miss the sign if they were not paying attention and actively looking for it. I know there is a larger room in the back where they make their sweets but the front end was small enough to have just a few people in there at the same time. Service: The mochi were already made and so the service time was fairly quick- I can imagine there being a wait time if the place gets busy as it looks like there is only 1-2 people who are servicing the front. Uniqueness: old style hand made Japanese sweets- a place to come visit and try out at least once!

Yelp
This is real fresh and homemade mochi. The Mochi was so good, I will get this every time I come to hawaii. This is where they manufacture the Mochi, but there is a small shop inside. The peanut butter Mochi was my favorite. They all have little fillings inside and omg I wish I could have it again. The service was amazing and the lady was super nice! Bring cash unless you are paying over $10 dollars then you can use card! Which won't be hard to do. Got 8 Mochi's for the price of $10. The shop is inside the warehouse and is tuck in the back. There was construction going out on the street, so took us a little bit to get around and find it. I highly recommend!

Yelp
My go to spot in oahu for mochi!! Came here on a weekday around 10:00am and there was a couple customers ahead of me. The store is really small and there is not a lot of parking in front. Each store next to it has its own designated parking spaces. The store is in a small little warehouse industry area. I ended up getting 1lb of chichi dango which was individually wrapped mochi in white and pink color. This is around 10-12 pieces I would say? I also got a couple chi chi dang with the tan powder coated on the outside. I forgot what it called but it dosent taste like much. I also got peanut butter, lychee, melona, white bean and Lillkoi mochi which were all really good. I enjoyed the lychee and lilikoi the most but all were so good. I don't have any complaints about any. Overall check this place out. Their mochi is so fresh and flavorful and decent prices.

Yelp
My friends and I agree the mochi here was fresh, not overly sweet, and worth the stop! We tried many different ones from coconut, green tea, peanut butter, etc. and each one was really good.

Yelp
Great variety of mochi, filled with all types of beans. Love the peanut butter mochi, and chichi dango. Great omiyage to bring to out of island family

Yelp
This is the OG! Always pick chichi dango up for family to bring to the outer islands. They sell it by the pound just for reference.

Yelp
I love Nisshodo's mochi selection! I've had mochi, either packaged at grocery stores, or from other small mochi shops, but a friend told me Nisshodo has THE best mochi on the island. She said this place is comparable to Two Ladies' Kitchen in Hilo! Months after enjoying Two Ladies' Kitchen, I knew I had to try Nisshodo, but I'm hardly in the Kalihi area! Fortunately, I did remember Nisshodo when I was having lunch nearby, and they were still open! I was determined to find the shop, which is behind Hana Tea! I ordered one of the following: daifuku, uguisu, green tea, and less traditional lilikoi, lychee, and melona. Given that I arrived less than an hour before closing, mochi selection was fairly limited, but still good. My husband and I can only finish so much mochi at a time! I loved each of these six mochi varieties. I can't say which one was my favorite. Everything was so tasty! The mochi definitely tasted fresh and didn't have that aftertaste I usually get from store-bought mochi or even mochi from other mom and pop shops. Yes, definitely comparable to Two Ladies' Kitchen, but more traditional! In short, I totally agree with my friend that Nisshodo helps tide over the Two Ladies' Kitchen craving. But when it comes to the more traditional mochi, Nisshodo definitely hits the spot! For those of you on Oahu who love those wacky and modern, but still tasty new mochi flavors, give Nisshodo a try! They may not have strawberry mochi or Oreo mochi, but Nisshodo definitely has fresh, sweet mochi! The mochi sets make great gifts. Given the limited selection near closing time, I highly recommend calling in your order in advance to ensure you get your favorite mochi flavors! P.S. *** UPCOMING TWO-WEEK VACATION *** Even during my July 2022 visit, I was already informed that Nisshodo will be on a two-week vacation, Sept. 26-Oct. 8, reopening Monday, October 10th. Get your mochi fill now, and get excited for next month's return!

Yelp
Wife asked me to run errands while we were in Oahu during her work training. I was told to get these "mochi bites" from this place...first, I would like to apologize because I forgot what they're actually called, but let me just say that these things are addicting!!! The place is a little hard to find at first if you're used to looking for a store front because the area looks more like garages and car repair shops...but it's actually also easy to find if you just follow the people walking towards the store. Parking is a little scarce, and I ended up parking by the restaurants closer to the main road and walking. The Mochi stuff are awesome though. They don't disappoint. I asked for recommendations when I was ordering but ended up just ordering a variety of everything. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
First time visiting today! I was so excited to come here that I had trouble sleeping the night before! And I was not disappointed at all!! Absolutely wonderful mochi, and now chichi dango is my new favorite food!! We tried: * peanut butter mochi (I knew we'd like these so thankfully got multiples) -- Delish. I'm not an azuki bean fan because I don't like the texture; pb is perfect. * lilikoi and melona were both too sweet for my preference, but the mochi was so good and pillowy soft; the flavors were spot on and bursting -- so you'll be happy if you have a sweet tooth. * we got the two darker colored ones that might be baked (?) and I can't remember the name. This was not a fave, only because I love the soft chew of mochi. * 1/2 pound of chichi dango was total heaven!! I've never had this before and it's the best treat ever!! I love the size (a few bites) and how they're individually "wrapped." They are perfection! * 1/2 pound of fruity chichi dango was incredible! The flavors are spot on and flavor forward. So yummy! I love that they have the chichi dango prepackaged by weight and assortment. I couldn't be happier. Well I'd be happier if I had access to a freezer so that my loot would last longer. Alas, I'm on a cruise ship for another week so likely won't be able to bring any home for my parents. Guess I'll have to eat it all..!!
