The 22 Best Dive Bars in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Anyone entering Pacific Beach knows the murals of the Night Owl. Since 1962, this iconic dive bar has stood as the gateway to the neighborhood. The ultra-dark interior is punctuated by a red-felt pool table, while classic pinball machines flicker in the back while darts wiz by your head. Drafts are on ice cold, often served with shot specials by a notably friendly staff. When bros outgrow the larger establishments in PB, this is the place they come to." - Kelly Bone

Google
We really like going there. Welcoming atmosphere where you can chat with your friends without shouting in a proper bar setting.

Laura Motherway

Google
Overall, nice bar. There are pool tables and dart boards. The toilets were disgusting, but I mean not the worst in the world. The bartender was nice and was doing a great job. However, for a Friday night, there was only one person behind the bar. Definitely fits dive bar description

Google
Dive bar vibes, but good and very affordable non-blended cocktails. The bartender ladies are always AWESOME! Major props to them. They all work so hard. I’ve probably ordered from at least four of them and they’re all wonderful and attentive.

Don’t play the Unabomber in pool! I lost $100 and my belt! Otherwise, cool late night spot.

I was in town for a couple of days and made this my go to spot because of the cool bartenders and friendly people! Can’t wait to go back to San Diego and see my new friends again! Rick K.

Yelp
A great old bar to start or end your night in Pacific Beach. The recent update looks great. Parking is the best.

Yelp
Oh my goodness, I lived in San Diego, specifically pacific beach, for seven years and never stopped by this joint. I saw the sign every time I took a left to go to the beach and said that one day I would go inside. While visiting for my friends bachelorette party, I made it a point to stop in and we were not disappointed! The bartender had stories and suggestions for days - I ended up getting a white claw with a shot and some Tajin and I was quite impressed - she really knew what she was talking about. Not only that, they have a juke box and pool tables so you don't have to just sit around - you can get up and be active. The signage and murals outside also made my heart happy - they do a really good job of being a nice dive bar!!!

Yelp
Went there yesterday around 11:45pm after celebrating the 4th of July. Sat there for 20 minutes at the bar. Not a bartender or anyone working there said one word to me. Didn't ask if I needed a drink. I was completely ignored so I left. The patrons were friendly though

Yelp
Popped in here to wait out my EV rental charging across the street. It started out pretty quiet in here. An hour later it was packed. Not sure how but a single solitary bartender was covering 50 or 60 of us hoodlums. She did a great job. Very fast. Very good at knowing who needed an updated drink at the bar. Never lost her cool. Somehow bar backed and picked up empties in between. Solid dive bar, amazing bartenders, and games (pool and ?).

Yelp
Great local spot. Cold drinks and great friendly service. We happened upon this spot by accident and we were glad we did. This is where the locals go

Cassidy M.

Yelp
such great service and environment but got so hot and sweaty as it got late - idk if they have any control of the AC but the bartender was fabulous and sweating with me

Erika A.

Yelp
Was my first experience at the night owl and couldn't have had a better bartender. Jenn has got to be by far one of my favorite bartender's I've ever met. Knows how to bring the fire. Will definitely be back.

Richard T.

Yelp
My wife and I had to pull into their parking lot with a blown rear tire around 8:30 one night. We were driving to SD from Oakland in the pouring rain when the tire blew and completely shredded. A group of guys from the bar offered to help us get back on the road. I went in to let the the bar keeper know what was going on. "No problem, let us know if there's anything we can do to help", was her reply. Helpful staff and helpful patrons. It made a bad situation a positive experience.

Yelp
Great local chill spot off the beaten path. Not the typical pb scene....good place to shoot pool.

Yelp
My first time here and I'm 21. Brittney is amazing. So sweet and such a fun personality. Came with girlfriends and will definitely come back :)

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! This is a local dive bar, and hotel hang out, but it is a wonderful place to be with a great jukebox and an incredible staff of bartenders and employees. The drinks are cheap, the service is fast friendly and fun, and the Ambiance is very chill and relaxing. Yes it is a dive bar, but what's wrong with that it's a great Dive Bar it's a great locals hang out and it's got great stuff. I would definitely recommend coming here to listen to some tunes or just have a cheap good drink or a game of pool

Yelp
Hoot. Hoot. I'm a Nite Owl. Late Saturday night and suddenly I was transported over to my cousin's Midwest '70s man cave basement with a few modern touches: -wood paneling -well stocked bar with the basics -electronic dart board -Touch Tunes juke box -pool table -big screen tv -Indiana Jones pinball -outdoor woodsman bathroom wallpaper I believe the building's exterior has been refurbished, but much of the interior has maintained its old, woody scheme. The dated design has a natural charm in it's own special way, but like the cowbell, this place needs more owl simply because I like owls (and turtles). A friend in the area wanted to meet up for drinks, but we were thinking low key and laid back instead of the loud party PB bar/clubbing scene, beach parking, or the DUI checkpoint lines escaping the bro zone layer after last call. Other dives were considered, like Silver Fox, Dave's Tavern, or Silver Spigot, but Nite Owl seemed right. No run-ins with toothless drifters or other sketchy characters, but we got to visit with lovely bartendress, Tara, who did a fine job of making sure glasses were kept full. We also chatted with Dani (sp?), an off-duty journeyman bartendress who shared some interesting industry insider stories. Even a party bus of drunks stopped in for a round. The Nite Owl is a classic PB landmark that has it's doors open for all species of wildlife. It's not exactly a lounge without comfy booths or plush seating, but the barstools keep you upright. The cocktail pours are heavy and the beers are cold. There is plenty of people watching potential on a busier Nite, so bring your dive bar bingo cards.

Yelp
great dive bar. I had 2 well whiskey cokes, and 5 Jack ands for under 30 bucks. The bartenders were nice, and both locals and visitors in the area were all very friendly. Cant wait to go back again. Oh and they run their AC so its even better on a hot day.
google avatar

Yelp
Brittany is so amazing ! Such a great bartender and so engaging! Would stop by again !

Aaron L.

Yelp
Don't judge this place by the door. Inside it is a full bar waiting to serve you with great customer service and a friendly atmosphere! Very cool bar with updated seating and and area for bar games. Come check this place out if you are in San Diego.

Kay F.

Yelp
Seems like a chill spot, just driving by. Will stop by sometime , by first impression looks a bit small which isn't bad- just observations.
google avatar

Nina B.

Yelp
Nice "dive" bar, I'm not even sure I'd call it a "dive". Good juke box. Cheap drinks. The bartenders have been great! BUT.. Some very judgy, possibly racist- who appear to be regulars, sit at the bar and talk sh*t. Made it very uncomfortable for us, so we left. It's happened twice now and we wont be going back.

Kaitlyn N.

Yelp
great prices, great location, and brittany is the best!! she is always so nice and attentive when i come in. wish she was here every night!
google avatar

Beks ..

Yelp
Ray is absolutely the best bartender! She is attentive, friendly, knowledgeable on her drinks and quick. I've been coming here for years on and off, going back before they remodeled the place. The inside is comfortable, clean and fun. It's the go to spot from the chaos of PB nicely set at the edge of Garnet. I love that they have the basketball game too! Thank you for doing what you do and being you Ray:)

Santia R.

Yelp
I love night owl. It's my neighborhood bar. Britt is the best. She always hooks it up. Love her!!

Yelp
Ah, the Nite Owl, we've all passed it numerous times on the way into PB. I always wondered what the hell was going on in here?. Well friends, the "Owl" is a throwback to a real old fashioned dive bar. Your watch might read 11:45pm , but in here, it's 1973 -All-night-long! Nice! .Unchanged, authentic -70's-faux wood paneling, neon beer signs, low lights , etc..--gotta love it. Parking can be a challenge but this place is worth the effort. Not a trendy scene by any means (thank god) The kinda place you go to have some cheap beers listen to the jukebox and relax. When we paid a visit , nighttime patrons were a mix of different folks, local older patrons/regulars seated at the bar , conversatin' and spinning humorous yarns. A nice lady bar tender pouring stiff mixed drinks and cold draft pitchers of Doe-mes-tique brew. Some mid-twenties non-hipsters playing pool and acting normal. No jock ass-culos, no Lilo's, just people looking to have a drink (or 15). Bottled beer available, Some imports ,usual lineup of call/well and premium liquid death too. Packaged snacks, popcorn, chips, pretzels. Jukebox , yep. Enjoy the small Mens bathroom with the gnarly fluorescent lighting -confirming the possibility of Hep :and/or Jaundice staring back at you in the mirror! We'll be back!

Yelp
I have passed By this lounge for a very long time and it was very surprising how nice it is inside I don't know if it was just remodeled but it's great !fun jukebox Good selection of beer and liquor and the service was wonderful will return

Yelp
Never a dull moment at this bar! My dad and I always end our annual SD trip at this place after the Giants/padre game and we always meet the coolest people. Fun dive bar to go to and good prices too! Worth a stop by if you're looking for some fun!

Haleigh Y.

Yelp
All the bartenders are great, so sweet and are always a great time. I would come because it's a great experience and the drinks are good and well priced.
google avatar

Dante C.

Yelp
Awesome dive bar prices, great locals vibes, bartenders are knowledgeable and friendly, went in on a Saturday night, and the bar tender Tawni, was the best ever! Fast service, great cocktails, and a great personality! Favorite bartender in San Diego! Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Odessa W.

Yelp
I'm from Portland Oregon where there's lots of dive bars and this bar instantly took me back home so many fun games good staff very friendly away from the PB madness just absolutely amazing! Not to mention it's right down the street from my house
google avatar

Mesha G.

Yelp
Wow! You know how they say, don't judge a book by its cover? Well this place is why. The outside may look slightly terrifying but the inside is super updated, nice and clean. Great staff and great deal on drinks! Plus not too crowded like everywhere else in PB. Such an awesome dive bar.
google avatar

Ezra S.

Yelp
Great dive bar! Friendly staff and reasonable prices. My friend and I arrived in a Lambo and everybody was very respectful and friendly.
google avatar

Shaun W.

Yelp
This place is like your best friends basement in high school! So much fun, and it's just a great end of night spot. Seriously take the time to stripy by. You won't regret the time spent! The jukebox makes this place happen. It's accessible by app, so you can place your money through the app and request songs. One of my favorite places!
google avatar

Yelp
Ladies, listen up. This is a GREAT first date bar, I took a guy here thinking, "what's a bar nearby my place where there won't be any attractive female competition?" (because I'm insecure like that) and the Nite Owl was definitely the right choice. Not only was I the ONLY female in there for most of the night (save the bartender Connie, who was, might I add, super friendly but probably on something) but I ended up impressing the shit out of him with my ability to withstand offensive odors, unwarranted sexual advances by homeless men and impossibly strong shots. The female bathroom was also shockingly clean. The soap is industrial strength, but that's probably for the better. This bar is legendary, and I defy any of you Silver Fox patrons to tell me that is a true "dive bar" after spending some time at the Nite Owl. Amateurs.

Yelp
Lucky for me, I live walking distance to this gem. In fact, this is the closest drinking establishment to my house other than sneaking beers on to the golf course. I am a huge fan of dive bars, so the dark interior and older regulars are commonplace at bars I frequent. At this location, you will find both. The crowd is aways friendly, and often generous. It's not strange here to have strangers buy you a round of drinks. It's easy to do here as well since their prices are right up my alley -- cheap. The Touch Tunes makes it fun to play whatever your heart desires. And don't be shy about having a dance party. There's no set dance floor, but dancing is not discouraged. The bartenders are always friendly and helpful, but there's usually only one working, so when you roll up with a crowd of 10 of your best friends, someone is gonna have to wait a minute for a drink so be patient. Or play around of pinball while you wait. The place is spacious and the bathrooms (although not fancy) are always clean. That's the sign of a place where people respect the bar. Not only the staff, but obviously the patrons as well. If they could somehow add an outdoor or roof top patio I would be in HEAVEN and their sales would easily triple. That or maybe a big TV with "sports" since I don't have cable. This is not your typical PB bar, so don't get too excited about mojitos and girls in skimpy dresses. You'll see a lot of regulars, dressed down and just havin' a beer with the crew. Come on in sometime and say hello.

Yelp
Yo honey pb bunny! Dis place is diviest lovmiest corniest! Affordable drinks good juke!

Yelp
I've driven past the Owl of the Night many, many, times. In fact, about twice a day for the past twenty years, which means I've passed it upwards of 14,000 times. And that's math for you, not hyperbole. It's been the source of many jokes and jabs over the years. Well, somewhere around the 14,293 time, my sister and I decided that the time had finally come to enter the Night Owl. We apprehensively pulled into the parking lot with our windows down. An eerie silence was upon us. We decided that making it into the parking lot was enough progress for one night. As we started to pull away, loud, festive bar music started to play. We looked at each other and realized they had put the music on for us, a sad siren song to woo the headlights outside to park and come in. It was too tragic not to. So we parked, and walked in. What did we find? Great Scott! A bar like no other! Ok, like many others, but not at all what we expected. There was no smoke-filled air or pungent carpet. The bartender, a sweet middle-aged woman, was charismatic and friendly. She shook out hands, welcomed us, poured us some Jameson and made us feel at home. There were other patrons there. And they weren't haggard pirates without teeth or families. There was a pool table and a jukebox. It was...it was just right! Soon, we forget the novelty of our mission and got right down to enjoying ourselves. What started as a joke turned out to be a blessing in disguise...a disguise known as.... The Night Owl.

Yelp
You know this place. You pass this shady looking wooden shack on Garnet right off the freeway. No fancy lit signs, just painted wooden letters and an owl. I have driven by a million times going through PB and never made it in ... Until earlier this week. I had about 30 minutes to kill when waiting to pick someone up for the Padres home opener and found the perfect spot. It was daytime which would probably be the only time I would feel safe enough to go being two girls! The seediness and the location would surely attract San Diego's finest with missing teeth. Walking in, we were the only ones at the bar so we were able to chat up the bartender. there are 2 pool tables and a dart board. and seemed like a cozy cheers type of bar. We had the best bartender Diana. She is super friendly and really makes you feel at home. She works Monday Day and Wednesday nights. apparently there is only one bartender per night that works and there is a different person for each night of the week. She offered her signature shot called 'trust me' which started us off on a really crazy day (we are talking 1:15 in the afternoon here!) Two different groups of people (all with teeth) walked in and both knew her really well. This place attracts a lot of regulars and has the basic hard liquor selection (i.e. no frangelico or anything weird). Not that we tried or anything- we had a very long day ahead of us! Also the bathrooms here are gross, probably because it is unisex but definitely would live up to its reputation. I didnt knock off a star because, well It is a seedy dive bar and it really cannot be expected. :) So glad I stopped in!

Yelp
I have been excited for the day that I finally get to go to the Nite Owl for months. It looks so mysterious and intriguing from the outside, and I do love the cute, little owl on the side of the building. This was the last stop on our 4/20 pub crawl, and what a great way to end. Upon entering, we are greeted by the only other patrons in the joint, two older dudes, one of which emulated Blue from Old School, and the super friendly bartender. We chatted it up with the bartender and the guys. They don't have a happy hour, because everything is "already happy hour prices", which really, isn't untrue. $2.50 Miller Lites, and the mixed drinks are under $5. The bar itself is cozy and retro, wood paneling and pool tables. One of the older dudes, who happens to live above the bar, decided to fund a jukebox contest between Christina K and I. We each got a dollar to pick songs. He couldn't decide who won, so he bought us both drinks and gave us $5 to pick more songs. I love contests, jukeboxes and fun old dudes, so I was having a grand ol' time. Plus, I got to pick the Band's "up on cripple creek", which was awesome. I can't wait to come back and get wasted with my new friends. After that garden place next door closes, you can park there for Nite Owl, but you have to have your car out by 10am the next morning.
google avatar

Corinna K.

Yelp
My favorite bar - this is THE place to go for some serious drinking. Cheap drinks, wonderful bartender (she remembered me just from going there once!), two pool tables, usually clean bathrooms. Jukebox is pretty incomplete but no big deal. Yes, it's a dive. No, you will not get shanked. If you're lucky you might see some crazy homeless people throw up in a sink.
google avatar

Josephine A.

Yelp
Cavernous. Juke box. Pool table. Weird XXX game. Cheap drinks. HAHA the Night Owl was quite a bland, however memorable experience. The walls are adorned with cheap wood veneer which gave the bar this "late 60's, early 70's" vibe. Small bathrooms made me feel dirty, but that all comes into play with a typical dive bar. Nearby a couple restaurants such as Wasabi, so you're able to park at Wasabi and stroll down to the Night Owl for an after-dinner nightcap. I came here before a family dinner party which was a BIG mistake. Note to self: When you get to the point where you and your sister are so tipsy, you actually call your parents to pick you up, you know you made a boo-boo.
google avatar

Scott M.

Yelp
Dive Bar at it's best. If you want to avoid all of the "Hi-Brow" folks at the bars closer to the beach this is the place for you. No need to dress up. Liquor is CHEAP and the bartender pours heavy. Great laid back 70's atmosphere and a crowd that ranges from old to young. The only food you can order is a bag of popcorn, but they don't frown on you bringing your own eats, so no worries.
google avatar

Albert W.

Yelp
Intriguing and grungy-looking from the outside, this is certainly a low-down and authentic dive bar on the cusp of Pacific Beach. The folks here looked like they came to the Mobil next door to get gas, but stayed for the $2.25 Budweiser. Tweakers, a painter, pool sharps, and some odd couples in their 40's made up the dirty dozen denizens of this hard-to-miss bar on the corner of Garnet and Mission Bay Drive. Our hero's 20-something friend was hit on by the 40-something bartender, who used the cliched "have I seen you here before" line. Classic. Much like the bar, the line probably worked well in the 70's but not so much nowadays. You have Flo Rida on your jukebox but you don't have the song "Low"? Are you serious? Well there aren't any shorties with apple bottom jeans and boots with the fur here. Negative on the baggy sweat pants, and the Reeboks with the straps too. Regardless, Nite Owl was a good mellow place to end a PB bar crawl. PROS: - Cheap drinks any time of the day. - Occasional pool tournaments held at the bar. CONS: - Of the two pool tables here, the one closer to the front of the bar has definitely seen better days. The 4-ball is missing a chunk out of it. - Disgusting washrooms. You're better off peeing on a fence behind the bar.

Yelp
Deuches are rampant in the PB area, mostly by the touristy area on Grant and Garnett. But what if you dont make the varsity deuchy club? Well, you get the reject deuches and they congregate here at the Nite Owl. This place is over-run with the saltiest of the deuche parade, that they feel the need to prove to themselves that they are #1 in Deuschland. I was scared for my life, and I had to expedite drinking my pint so I can get out of there. But these guys were kinda entertaining...old, but deuchelike. At least with the bars in downtown PB, you can always escape a deuchy bar and go somewhere else, all within walking distance. Not here. This is where old deuches go to die.
google avatar

matthew s.

Yelp
Old friend back in town for the weekend? Want to play some pool while dispensing with the pint glass and drinking straight from the pitcher? Want to listen to a shitty jukebox, but not at the expense of reconnecting with someone you haven't spoken with for some time? I gaurantee they've driven past this place many a time, and they've always been curious to check it out.
google avatar

Yelp
Between a 31/2 or 4 stars really. Dark, dingy but CHEAP as all hell!! I went here about 2 years ago and bought the entire bar drinks for under 20 bucks. At least that's how I remember it. but then again i think there was also an altercation with a foreign cab driver too so I can't be too sure what happened. Great dive bar but a little bit far down Garnet. You will meet savory characters and enjoy a night out without superficial bull or fake people. go with a group, its a really fun time. Oh yea I think they open at 10 am!!
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
Classic San Diego dive bar. I'd heard about this place years ago when I lived in PB, and while I had gone many times to what I call it's 'sister bar', the Silver Fox (as they are both in the same vein - divey), never quite made it out to the Owl. Finally went when a big group of friends, the DDD crew, were going last night. Had a blast. First off, the place was cleaner than you'd expect from a real divey bar. That includes the bathrooms (which one member of our group had heard were not). Second, the bartender was awesome. Didn't get her name (she's not the one on the pics on their Yelp page). We had a really big group; we called ahead so they knew we were coming, but she was fantastic, delivering great strong drinks in a timely fashion. The regulars were cool, didn't mind us invading their spot. Good time had by all.
google avatar

cristal k.

Yelp
I don't hate this bar. Aside from my pervious post. That was only for the shady experience with the bartender. It's my favorite dive and I've had plenty of great times here. But I only come here when Meg is working. She's a fun bartender. Great personality. Always happy and cheerful and the vive in here is chill and laid back. Drinks are cheap and I always leave here with a belly full of laughs!
google avatar

Crystal M.

Yelp
This place is great!! The parking is terrible but we walk there. The drinks are strong and cheap, and really that is what has me coming back for more. There is a wierd diversity of people that end up at the bar, but no Dude Bro's, and no lines!!! The bartenders are the best part, they remember your name, and they are really nice!!!
google avatar

Kalli C.

Yelp
The Nite Owl was my favorite bar as a student at UCSD. It is totally laid back and has drink on the cheap. This is the sort of bar where guys stop in after work to avoid going home right away. I am not a night owl myself, so this was a great place for me. I could get there at 8pm, there would be about 8 other folks there, have a few drinks, play a round of pool, and be out the door by 9pm. If you want a place to dance and hang out with cool young people, this is not the place for you. If you want a bar where everyone knows your name, move to Boston. But if you want a bar where you can get a cheap drink and relax, check out the Nite Owl.

Derrleek R.

Yelp
Might be the crappiest bar in California It's an absolute miracle that this bar is still in business Smells bad, drinks are weak, dark and musty, dirty, no food, weak TVs The only good thing about this place is that you can buy beers to go!!!! YAY!!! This bar needs some prayers... BLESS UP
google avatar

Dan D.

Yelp
My new fave dive bar. Right up there with the Star Bar downtown. Everyone was chill and made us feel at home. Some dudes kept sending our ladies drinks and we're like, "OK, bro, less for me to buy. She's still leaving with me." Then a couple next to us bought us a Grasshopper because they thought we'd like it. We sent them a round. Yeah, it's that kind of place. Left after a couple hours with a tiny little bar tab....and our girls.
