"Another corn devotee, this easygoing eatery cleared out the cobwebs of a Southtown pizzeria in September. As the name implies, the staple crop is pivotal to dishes like cochinita pibil topped with a souffléed tortilla and an octopus tostada marinated in adobo. Carnivores will be pleased by various proteins, from pork belly to lamb to tuna. There are indoor and outdoor dine-in services." - Brandon Watson

Great local spot with authentic Mexican food! Everyone there is so nice and you can tell everything is made from scratch! The grilled octopus was probably my favorite - it had the perfect grilled flavor. All the salsas and the fresh tortilla chips are out of this world. The pork belly with green mole was also great! We ordered more than we had room for. Bring all your friends and try several dishes!

Oh me oh my… this place is fantastic. Everything we had was some of the best we have had in San Antonio. It really is a special place. The chef is obviously a talented individual. The service was fantastic and the gentleman behind the bar is one of the finest bartenders we have had the pleasure of watching and talking with. He is an artist and the cocktails were creative and incredible. This place is one of our best… Also, the tacos de ribeye are next level. I should also say I had the hamburguesa nixtamali and loved every bite.

We had such a wonderful time at Nixtamali ! I wanted to take my Mom visiting from out of town to someplace special here in San Antonio and Nixtamali is just that! In fact, it really has become a favorite ! The food is phenomenal the steak,,ribeye tacos dessert drinks you name it is all on point ! Our server Mariana was nothing short of fantastic ! She was so incredibly sweet, giving us recommendations on things to try and was attentive and so genuine because she just wanted to make sure we were having a great time that evening. Mariana made that experience memorable! I love how she was talking with us and taking our pictures together. Mariana made this an Amazing time we will never forget ! I can't wait to go back !

My coworker and I were exploring around our hotel and found this newly opened restaurant. We were greeted immediately by the nicest waitress who constantly came to check on how we were doing, which was well appreciated. The food and drinks were amazing. Real Mexican food! The owner also came out to meet with us personally, which you don’t get a lot of anywhere else. If you’re looking for something new, with great food and great service, try out Nixtamali!

Google
Promising new restaurant offering upscale Mexican cuisine. Service was good, the staff is super friendly! Atmosphere is 10/10. We were welcomed with some delicious refried beans, homemade charred tortilla chips and 3 different types of salsa! I wanted to give Nixtamali a 5 star review; however, there were a few dishes that could be improved (in my opinion). I also didn’t like the fact that all our dishes came in at once even after I had requested for them to come separately. We had too many plates in our table and it was hard to take the time to really enjoy each dish. Other than that, we had a nice evening!

Google
The pork belly with green mole and the chicken enchiladas with traditional mole were excellent. The Nixtamali tequila shot is presented in a delicious way. The panuchos appetizer and elote dessert were good too.

Google
Everything was PERFECT! The atmosphere is so gorgeous, each plate was delicious, and the service was incredible. Their homemade tortillas were to die … so happy to have our new go-to spot! 🙌🏻

Amazing new Mexican spot in San Antonio! Everything was fresh, creative & something outside of the typical Mexican restaurants. Great cocktails & really great food. Will have to come back for brunch!

Yelp
Ate here on a quiet Wednesday night. Absolutely amazing across the board. Andrea and Daniel were fantastic. Andrea knew the menu front to back and explained how everything was prepared in detail (we had a lot of questions.) Daniel made so amazing drinks and he was kind enough to show me a new mojito technique. The food? Fantastic. We kept ordering because we never wanted to stop eating. I'm no expert on this type of food but everything was well balanced and individually fantastic. I don't think this kitchen makes mistakes. The restaurant itself is homely in a positive way. They aren't blaring music, no over the top lighting or decor. It's classy and simple. I'll be back for my birthday in a few weeks because that's how much I want to try more dishes (and margarita flavors.)

Yelp
Of a table of 12, the majority order was the Tacos de pollo a la plancha and they did not disappoint. This was likely the heartiest meal @ the table. Other faves were: - enmoladas - guacamole - queso fundido Andrea was our server and so so good to us. Thursdays have margaritas for $6.99 that are delish! We highly recommend. The decor felt authentic and warm, making the vibes just perfect. We will be back!

Yelp
This restaurant was so delicious for upscale Mexican food! We will definitely come again. I remember when it was a vegan restaurant but I'm glad the location has changed to this. We came on a Thursday night so we got half priced drinks. Our server gave us 1 full-priced because she told us it was half price after 7, but the menu said it should be All-Day on Thursdays. I didn't correct her because it seemed like a slow night. We were one of two tables at 7pm. Other than that the service was good and our drinks came out quickly from their large bar. The restaurant is medium sized (especially for Southtown) and they seem to have an extra room that could host larger parties. Now to the FOOD: We ordered Ribeye Tacos and the Cochinita Pibil - slow cooked pork. Both were so flavorful and came with fresh, tasty tortillas! The pork was juicy with sone fatty pieces, but it made for a delectable bite with the tortilla and pickled red onion. The Ribeye Tacos weren't cut steak pieces like I expected (it was more of a thin cut ribeye) but it was well-marinated and had great flavor. It also came with a smoky spread that added more depth to the meat. It wasn't spicy so I slathered it to every bite. Only thing we weren't a big fan of was the chips in the free appetizer. They were charred, which I get could've been for authenticity. But the burnt parts added too much bitterness and we couldn't enjoy the flavor of the salsas. Luckily the fresh tortillas came out perfectly cooked. I must say the quality of the food here was so good, we immediately decided we need to come back. There's a very small parking lot in the back, but on a slow night it wasn't too hard to get street parking nearby.

Yelp
I'll start by stating the atmosphere of Nixtamali is incredibly inviting! The service was even more inviting and very attentive. But the most important part, the food, absolutely wonderful!

Nelly L.

Yelp
Let's just get to the point...drinks were superb. If you went there half asleep or in some sort of mood, the margaritas definitely would wake you up and change the vibe. :) A tad overpriced. My honey ordered the tacos and they're delicious, plenty of flavor and very filling. The chips and salsa along with the beans were also good. The fideo and enmoladas were not a hit. Or possibly just never had it prepared this way, flavor was off and truthfully I felt I got fried chicken taquitos covered in mole. The restaurant is done well and the staff was terrific. I will say the music of choice doesn't pass the vibe check. R&B and house music doesn't seem to fit what they're going for.

Yelp
Dined here this past week for our first night in town and left very happy. The fresh chips, bean dip and salsas were excellent and you can tell they take a lot of pride in making a lot of things from scratch. We tried both versions of the pibil and were very happy with it. The entree version had the right amount of meat and fat that makes the pibil dish so delicious and was a treat to scoop it up in their house made tortilla's. The only dish we weren't too thrilled with was the Aguachile. It felt like a refined version of the dish (broth was poured table side on the shrimp vs letting them soak in it) which made all the difference in my opinion and the sauce lacked the punch of spice and citrus and was overpowered by cucumber instead. Our waitress was incredibly sweet and kind and even offered us suggestions on what to do while in town. A few kinks to sort out here like having the bartender situated in time and this place will be rocking!

Charlie C.

Yelp
A wonderful find! I was looking for a great drink and Mexican food--this place did not disappoint. From freshly made tortillas and chips to mixology caliber cocktails, everything at this restaurant is of premium quality. The wait staff is extremely wonderful and attentive. It's the type of place where you feel at home despite being at a restaurant.

Yelp
Dinner with friends in this new-ish Southtown spot. Friendly greeting as we walked in, quickly seated. Fun, casual, but classy environment. Authentic Mexican dishes, no Tex-Mex here. Unfortunately, the MUSIC WAS SO LOUD we had to lean in to hear each other throughout the meal. Unfortunately, our friendly, smiling waitress spoke very little English, so it was difficult to ask questions or make special requests. Multiple times another smiling, friendly server who spoke more English came to our table to translate. Unfortunately, we couldn't have the ceviche we ordered because the kitchen was out of fish. On a Saturday night. At 6:30 pm. Unfortunately, we couldn't have the Pollo Con Mole because the kitchen had no mole available. Unfortunately, we had to wait extra time for our tortilla soup because they had to make a fresh batch. Unfortunately, no ice tea is served - only soft drinks and some flavored water. We did have a nice bottle of wine. Unfortunately, one of the entrees was served 10 minutes before anyone else's meal came out. Unfortunately, the food was only fair and was expensive. What we had hoped would be a great meal certainly turned out not to be. Unfortunately, won't be going back...

Yelp

Irma C.

Yelp
Hands down the best tuna tostadas and the margaritas are the absolute best! The staff is so friendly!

Waverly H.

Yelp
Came to Nixtamali thanksgiving weekend. Made a reservation and was excited to eat here. I think they are a new restaurant. We Arrived and greeted by a warm, friendly, and smiling staff. Andrea was our waitress and completely amazing and wonderful. Their hibiscus tea is way beyond satisfying. Cocktails are wonderful. I Was not pleased with my Guacamole (and I love guacamole). It was not dense like avocados can be. Is was very wet and I think that is because they had cucumbers in it (I like cucumbers but not in my guacamole) ,not for me. My partner ordered the Chicken enchiladas with an exquisite mole sauce. And I had the baked chicken entree. Let's say presentation was on the mark. But all was not enjoyable because the entrees came out like warm. My chicken dish lacked flavor (I put the mole from my partners enchiladas on my dish and that made it palatable). My chicken was cold on the inside and the enchiladas were luke warm. So with that experience we passed on dessert and another cocktail. Nice, spacious, and romantically lit with nice spacing between tables. I will definitely give them another try when the kinks are worked out.

Bill G.

Yelp
Amazing food and service. Andrea was excellent with great suggestions and descriptions of dishes.

Danny L.

Yelp
Food was outstanding. Service was great. Surprised not busy on a Thursday night. Try the ribeye tacos and pork belly mole. Both were excellent!

Frankie M.

Yelp
First time coming to Nixtamali. Plenty of room for various parties, friends, families, corporate eats. amazing and old fashioned Mexican style tables and chairs. We were promptly greeted by the manager, David, who we had the opportunity to meet and took the time to explain the amazing history of Nixtamali. Humberto, was our waiter and he explained the menu and his preference, Cochinita Pibil (photo) and it was amazingly tasty and delicious! My wife and I were very pleased and enjoyed this newly beauty and amazing food downtown San Antonio. People looking for authentic Mexican food should be delighted to have this place. I highly recommend this place for any person or any size party!

Ofelia M.

Yelp
The service is exceptional and the food is the best! Traditional and original Mexican cuisine!!!

Don S.

Yelp
We were a group of three and we all ordered the same dish, enmoladas. T he is was the best chicken mole I have had. The chicken was cooked perfectly, the skin was crisp and flavorful. The mole sauce was at the bottom of the dish which I preferred as you can de ice how much sauce you prefer with each bite. We also had the guacamole which was refreshing and bright. Our server was friendly and full of spirit. The experience here was stellar and if I'm back in San Antonio again, I will definitely visit again.

Dina T.

Yelp
This is the best Mexican food in Southtown! Had the tacos de ribeye and the tamal oaxequeno as well as the espresso martini and everything was amazing. It's a little loud and sometimes kitchen is a bit slow but the food is worth the wait!

Victoria P.

Yelp
Fantastic service, food, and atmosphere. We will definitely be back. The happy hour is fantastic is you're looking for an introduction to this restaurant and was a fantastic value.

Fern L.

Yelp
It was a great surprise for me to find a nice, elegant, and great food restaurant in San Antonio. From the entrance, the tables, the chairs, the walls and service of this place have taken care of every single detail. A very wide menu has options for any taste, stake, sea food, pork, chicken, and vegetarian. I mean, there are plenty of options, and the most important thing is that everything we ordered was amazing. The Rib Eye tacos were magnificent, and to end in a high note, the Corn Bread with Rompope, I still have it in my mind. As a very well-respected family member, once said: "a good restaurant is a place where no matter what you order, everything will be good", and this place is not only good, it is superb.

Natalie C.

Yelp
Went here on a whim and so glad we did. This place focuses on the masa prepared with the typical Nixtamalization process. Everything is prepared to order. The guacamole was fresh, the salsa was delicious, and even the kids pasta tasted fresh and delicious. We ordered the cochinita pibil, the carnitas de Michoacán, short rib birria and the kids pasta. All was amazing. The service was fantastic, everyone was so nice and attentive. There are 4 to 5 restaurants in Austin (all of which have been nominated for or won James Beard awards) that are similar to the Yucatán style found here, but I think our meal here at Nixtamali was better than all the meals we have had at those places. The closest meal I can compare it to is El Naranjo on south Lamar in Austin.

Jonny C.

Yelp
New restaurant that just opened up last week. I loved it from service to food everything was great. We did a bunch of the appetizers I would say the pulpo was my favorite. But everything we had was very authentic tasting. The service was immaculate, very attentive and they even brought out some food for my puppy which in my book is an automatic A. The ambiance is very relaxed and rustic. A lot of wood and brick. Would definitely come again with friends or a date.

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
New place with lots of potencial ! Staff welcoming, the detail on the decor stands out like authentic Mexican restaurant. Now the food was super tasty. We decided to have only starters and rate from there. Gordita plate comes with three well portioned and delicious. Next the quesadillas with option of cheese, chorizo and tinga we had them mixed small but filling. Lastly the shrimp aguachile was good but not spice as an aguachile should be. I must add none of the salsa trios were spicy, they were served with tostadas at the beginning but to be fair we didn't ask for an spicier salsa. I will come back to try the main entrees. Tip for the owners background music in Spanish

Yelp
Writing this review on behalf of my parents: My parents were in Texas, visiting from Chicago. Safe to say as a Chicagoan, our tastebuds are trustworthy. This is why with confidence my parents recommend this spot to anyone and everyone looking for authentic Mexican food in the San Antonio area. My mom ordered their Tortilla soup, which she described as being impeccable, delicious, and gorgeously presented. The staff were all very warm, welcoming and just fantastic. Safe to say this restaurant belongs in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. I am now looking forward to visiting San Antonio exclusively to try Nixtamali!!

HJ H.

Yelp
A true gem of a restaurant for San Antonio. Just take one bite of their corn tortilla, and you will realize how much attention and effort they give to the food. The beef ribeye tacos were tender and flavorful.

Rogelio C.

Yelp
An authentic Mexican food. Everything is based on the corn process. The service is really great and the have a good ambiance. You should try the octopus tostadas, and the cochinita is really great.

Paola M.

Yelp
The food was absolutely outstanding Mexican flavor to the point 100% authentic The service was amaizing And we love the ambiance very much we really enjoy everything

Rubi J.

Yelp
Excellent food here! Great service! Mariana took great care of us ! ..everything came out accordingly. The pulpo is a MUST! Best pulpo we've had in San Antonio. You must go and check this place out. Won't disappoint! Shout out to the chef. Doing excellent work here. Muy buen lugar !!!

Gabby S.

Yelp
Such a wonderful place with great ambiance, attentive service, and overall the food was very flavorful! Was a big fan of the homemade corn tortillas, the charro beans which have a unique and rich flavor that I've never tasted anywhere, its a must try! The salsas were also very unique packing a flavorful punch which was a great complement overall to the food. The Aguachile was refreshing & the pulpo was very tender! Star plate over all was the rib eye taco (not pictured) which was perfect! If you haven't been here, it's worth the visit!

Grace F.

Yelp
Incredible! Brunch was excellent. The flavors are authentic with an elevated flare and a very attractive presentation. Truly enjoyed every bite, and will be returning.

Sarah H.

Yelp
TLDR: High prices for ordinary food. Poor kitchen timing meant each member of our party received their entree at different times. This restaurant is odd. The food was tasty - truly. However the prices are so strange. A burger and fries was $25. It was a good burger but nothing really seemed to make it a $25 burger. A plate of skirt steak covered in cheese was flavorful and tender, but cost $35 and came with nothing but 3 tortillas - no sides at all. A bowl of pozole and three flautas was the nightly special and cost $35. The pozole was tasty like everything else but just not that special - the same pozole you'd encounter at any Mexican restaurant but in a fancier bowl I guess and served without tortillas (which are the signature item of the entire restaurant). The restaurant itself is quite beautiful - really nice style elements. But we paid upscale dining prices for what felt like ordinary and/or incomplete plates of food. We were a party of three, but our food came out haphazardly. Each member of our table ate alone while the other two just watched. My daughter was served her burger soon after ordering and had entirely eaten it by the time my husband was served his steak. Meanwhile I had nothing. About 40 minutes after we ordered my waitress let us know there had been a delay making the flautas that were meant to accompany my bowl of pozole. A few minutes later she produced the soup but no flautas. Flautas came out about 5-10 minutes after the soup. By the time they were served my daughter had been done with her meal for over half an hour. I think the creators of this restaurant have some really good ideas, but they need to seek some input from an experienced restauranteur. The prices they are charging don't match the plates or service they are providing.

David J.

Yelp
This place is such a nice gem, a small cozy spot makes for a very unique experience. At first was intimidated by the menu because everything seemed like a good choice. But our waitress was friendly and helped decide on the pibil. It was mind blowing-ly delicious. The only thing keeping it from 5 stars is that they were missing a bar!

Tess M.

Yelp
This is our 4th time here and the food, service, and atmosphere are sensational !!! 5 stars plus... Best restaurant in downtown San Antonio!!' 5 stars !!!!

Adriana L.

Yelp
Wow! What a great evening we had. The food was absolutely delicious and authentic. The service was on point. As soon as you walk in you can smell the aroma of good cooking mixed with a little bit of love. A great gem for sure!

KD D.

Yelp
Wow! The food is amazing. The service is warm and attentive. The ambiance is welcoming. Such a treat to get authentic Mexican corn based flavors. The salsas offer a distinct range of flavors. Everything we had was so delicious I contemplated giving them 4 stars so others did not find this gem.

Joy C.

Yelp
This place has some amazing food. Our waitress was so nice and service was excellent! She went above and beyond for everything. I would recommend this place to everyone to try. Everything we ordered was excellent and the salsas are amazing!! If you haven't tried this place, Go try their food!!

Diane J.

Yelp
This restaurant just opened. Thought we would give it a try. The chips and salsas (3 varieties), along with the bean dip were great! There was an option for everyone including a six year old. I ordered the Gorditas. Each one had the meat prepared differently and was perfectly flavored with spices. They were able to customize the ribeye tacos for the very limited diet of a person in our group. The quesadillas were excellent. The side of beans was so flavorful with different spices. The atmosphere was pleasant with decor that was very tasteful. If you want to experience authentic Mexican cuisine I highly recommend this restaurant.

Cory B.

Yelp
Amazing food and great atmosphere, would recommend again and again. Best food I have had in SA

Maria G.

Yelp
Just tried out this new Mexican spot and it's legit! Finally, an authentic place, not that Tex-Mex stuff. The rib-eye tacos were out of this world--tender meat, perfect seasoning. Definitely coming back for more!

Chachi D.

Yelp
Food, services, ambience was great! It was our first time there. We definitely look forward returning again!

J C.

Yelp
Great food. Service spotty with very long waits for drinks and timing of service way off

Franklin F.

Yelp
Loved the authentic Mexican fare, flavors are amazing and remind me of Oaxaca or Guerrero. Super fantastic service and ambiance.

Luis D.

Yelp
The place is amazing, the staff was extremely nice and professional. The food was great and their hot sauces were awesome. Specially the toasted habanero sauce. This is not a TexMex restaurant, this place does genuine Mexican food.

Alejandro B.

Yelp
We had an excellent dinner at Nixtamali Molino/Comedor at their grand opening. Everything from the salsas (which were all unique and perfectly executed) to the Tostadas de Pulpo were phenomenal and different from anything I've tasted in town. I had the Cochinita Pibil as a main course and was blown away. Equally as impressive as the meat, the rice (among other things) was some of the best I've had at any restaurant. You can tell that Arturo, the chef, and owners, Beto and David, put their all into creating an inviting ambiance as well as an incredible, unique menu. I'm looking forward to going back.

jorge

Yelp
Interior Mexico cuisine. As close as you can get to authentic food outside of the country
