Portland Restaurants and Bars Where You Can See Live Music | Eater Portland

"Despite the name, many a fun night can be had at this Hawthorne bar with weekly music, trivia, and karaoke offered alongside its pickle martinis and Hemingway daiquiris. Devil’s Dill supplies the sandwiches, and the cash collected at the bar goes straight to the musicians. Touring artists like the Juniper Berries and Tarot de Marseilles play alongside locals like Oleada and Bory. Find the full list of upcoming shows online." - Jenni Moore

The Best Karaoke Bars in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Roaming karaoke host KJ Jessicon runs the Wednesday night karaoke at this Hawthorne bar connected to Devil’s Dill. From 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., visitors pop in to sing between seitan sandwiches or beef-and-cheddars. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot a Devil’s Dill line cook belting songs between orders; you can also buy earplugs at the bar, if necessary." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Bar is almost always busy, and usually has a show playing. The drinks are strong but good, though I cannot recommend the sandwich shop next door. Shows are always fun, if youre in the alt or punk scene I hope you go check them out!

This place is way too small for hosting live music. Half of the booths face away from the stage. More space is taken for the merch table and the sound equipment. You're left with a space that could maybe comfortably handle like 30 people at most but it's packed with as many people as can possibly fit in the building. If you're the type to ever wonder "where am I supposed to be standing?" then you're going to have a rough time here because nowhere feels like a spot you should be standing. My sandwich was good but that reflects more on Devil's Dill. Drinks were also fine and I didn't have issues with service other than it being hard to get service with so many other people trying to get food and drinks from the one guy serving them. The sound was surprisingly good compared to most places I've been to.

Monday trivia was fun and fast paced! Sandwiches are amazing, particularly the braised beef. Good beer selection, a few N.A. options.

Google
A local music lovers dive bar. Shows almost every night, solid beer selection and you can order amazing sandwiches from the Devil's Dill next door. Sound is really good, but be warned it's small and some bands do play pretty loud so bring some ear plugs. Major supporters of the local music scene!!

Google
Your typical dive bar. Local music was cool. Saw some bands from the area. Please bring earplugs to save your ears, though! Cash only entry if there's a show it seems. There's a close by ATM, in case you forget.

Google
This bar has a solid vibe. Very classic PDX dive bar. They have quite a few drink selections, including Liquid Death & Boneyard CBD. They have a stage in the back of the bar. The only downfall I see is that there is a single restroom and it’s located right next to the stage.

Google
What a great setup they have here! Bar with a stage and great soundsystem, affordable drinks and you can order from Devil Dill's sandwich shop next door from the bartender! OMG the vegan seitan Sandwich is to die for 💜

Google
Cool spot for music and drinks. They have non alcoholic options too which is always appreciated. Definitely on the small side with a stage crammed in at the back but not a problem if you don't mind being friendly with strangers. Cozy grunge vibes. Sound was good too! Plus the bathroom is dope 👌

Yelp
Contrary to their name, this spot was a rather fun bar, especially when you can get Devil's Dill sandwiches next door. Divey. Drinks were well-priced. During happy hour, you get $1 off your sandwich with an order of a drink too.

Yelp
The No Fun Bar stands out as a cornerstone of the live music scene, offering an unforgettable experience that goes beyond just a night out. My band, Izy Kactus, has had the pleasure of playing here on multiple occasions, and each time, the house is packed, buzzing with an energy that's hard to find elsewhere. What makes this place truly special, though, are the people behind the bar and the scenes. Nick, who wears many hats as the booker, bartender, and owner, is phenomenal to work with. His dedication to providing the best service and creating a welcoming atmosphere for both musicians and patrons alike is unmatched. The bartenders are incredible, ensuring that everyone, from the first-timer to the regular, feels part of the No Fun Bar family. Their service is quick, friendly, and always with a smile, contributing to the overall positive vibe of the bar. But it's not just about the service. The No Fun Bar offers a unique live music experience that feels both intimate and hip. Its lounge-like setting, combined with excellent sound quality managed by a great sound guy, makes every performance feel personal and engaging. This place has mastered the art of creating a space where artists can connect with their audience in a meaningful way, making each show memorable. In summary, The No Fun Bar is more than just a venue; it's a community hub for music lovers and artists alike. Whether you're here to enjoy the live music, savor a drink from the expert bartenders, or just soak in the hip lounge atmosphere, you're guaranteed a great time. Working with Nick and experiencing the vibrant energy of the packed house has been a highlight for Izy Kactus. It's clear that The No Fun Bar is not just a name--it's a statement, promising an exceptional live music experience that you won't find anywhere else.

Yelp
Fun dive bar, excellent bartender, and live local bands. It would be better if the mixed drinks were a bit more differentiated rather than using all the same ingredients.

Yelp
Came for early evening food and drink before a show down the street at Fuse Theatre Company. My partner had had a Devil's Dill sandwich at work and wanted me to try and indeed they are amazing. Is a cool, funky space and if we lived locally I would be a regular.

Yelp
An excellent dive bar! This place really serves the community. Since they are connected to Devils Dill, you can get their amazing sandwiches at the bar as well. Excellent drink special. I especially like their rotating list of boilermakers to choose from, both high end and bottom shelf. The thing that really sets them apart though is the entertainment. There seems to be something going on almost every night of the week there. Some nights it is trivia, other nights it is karaoke. However, what I love the most is that they have bands coming through several times a week. Often times these are local and smaller bands. They keep the cover low which reduces the barrier to entry for many people hoping to see some live music. They check vaccination cards as well. Best of all, they do not jack up the prices of their drinks during the shows so you don't feel like you're being gauged or nickel and dimed. What's not to love about this place?

Yelp
False advertising. I, in fact, did have fun catching live music there. The bands were solid.

Yelp
I live right across the street from No Fun and have had many good times here. There are two bartenders in particular that make the experience worth it - the bar itself is fine, but I come in only when one of two specific bartenders are working. Recently, one of them was let go of because of an interaction with an unsatisfied customer. I do truly hope that person did not experience anything inappropriate or threatening, but the fact that a staple of this place was let go of bc a freshly turned 21 year old did not enjoy themselves - that's effed up and so damn stupid. The person with the negative yelp review - which was probably out of context - would probably have not come back to No Fun anyway. I - as a regular - will be boycotting the business from now on, out of principle, despite living across the street. Chris can fuck right off.

Yelp
Went here the other day randomly as I was walking down the street. A very interesting "hole in the wall" style bar. They share the kitchen of Devil's Dill Sandwiches. The bar is very simple and interior is pretty dark. Drinks are fairly inexpensive. The service is friendly. The pork and beef red wine soup was very tasty. Good prices for happy hour.

Yelp
Last night, I ordered a $3 PBR. I had three $20 bills in my hand. I gave the bartender $20. He came back, gave me $2 in change, and walked away. Realizing he made a mistake, I got his attention to let him know. I was chill about it. He told me there's no way he'd be able to check and that I "probably just gave him a $5." I told him I was certain about this since I had $60 in my pocket (had just gone to an ATM). My buddy standing next to me vouched for me. The bartender shrugged and walked away. I don't care about the money, but I care about being treated like shit. Huge bummer. The bar itself is otherwise alright, but nothing special.

Yelp
i'm freshly 21 so i went out with my friends and we looked at this place online so we thought it would looked really fun to go to. once we get there the vibe was mid, and the music was so loud you had to scream into your friends ear just to hear them. when my friend was getting out drinks the bartender yelled "you have to f*****g speak up" in a really rude and unprofessional way. she got our drinks and my other friend went to get 2 rounds of shots (there were 3 of us so 6 shots) and the guy was like "you want 6 shots? all with salt all with lime? are you f*****g kidding me?" and he was just saying it with such a rude and disrespectful tone to us. because of the level of service, my friend who was paying for it ($70) didn't leave a tip and the guy comes back to our table and slams the receipt down and says "are you gonna tip? do you need a pen? i realize you guys are young but if you're too broke to tip you need to just stay home this is bulls**t" and we left almost immediately because it was just such an awful experience. we walked down to HighDive a block or so away and it was such an amazing and wonderful experience there. never go to no fun. name of the bar is extremely accurate.

Yelp
I just saw that someone responded to my review saying I'm lying. First of all, like I said in the post this happened months ago, I just now thought of leaving a review about it. It most definitely happened, I also didn't know if the guy was actually a GM or just said that so I would get out but I wouldn't make up some Random story. Idk if you can see how many reviews I've left but I don't do reviews for places often. She didn't ask for my vaccine card, I was explaining how I couldn't get into a show at the theater bc I wasn't yet vaccinated and then she called me disgusting. The fact that you are calling my review a lie is crazy to me though. It 100% happened, I truthfully don't care to make up a story about a bar I've been to one time. Just shows that you guys can't say wow I'm sorry you had that experience, that's definitely not like us. I'm sure this is a great bar most of the time, just my first and only experience wasn't very good.

Yelp
Little Hole In The Wall Bar With Friendly Bartender No tour of Portland would be complete without checking out the hold in the wall local spots! I don't think they have live music or much going on, just a tiny bar with drinks to drink... The name is pretty cool so we had to check it out.....

Yelp
I've been wanting to drink on Hawthorne for months and we finally had our chance! I picked the No Fun Bar because of it's high rating and I was pleased to find it not disappointing in any way. The vibe in there is chill, the girl working (brown hair, tank top, hat) was AMAZING and attentive, and I will come back at my first opportunity!

Yelp
I've been here a few times for shows or just for a drink. The bartender/staff are friendly and the sandwiches (from Devil's Dill next door) are amazing. I think I've had 5-6 different sandwiches there and I'll often take a chance on whatever their Special is at the time. Never been disappointed!

Yelp
No fun? I'd say some fun. I stopped off here with my partner and two friends for happy hour. The drinks were cheap and good, the bartender was friendly. There wasn't really anything unique about this place but it did feel like Old Portland, which is always great. It was a typical dark, dive bar. The bar is attached to the owners' other business, Devils Dill sandwiches. I do think the bar could be improved by adding a small bar menu of pub food rather than just having the sandwiches available. We were hungry, so left after one drink as we didn't want a sammie. If you're looking for a divey bar to grab a drink in, you could do worse.

Yelp
This is my neighborhood dive bar. Cheap drinks, decent service, and occasional entertainment. Open late. Recommend!

Yelp
Great local bar. I experienced good service. The bartender was cool. Prices are fine. I'll definitely be heading back again soon.

Awesome dive bar. Cheap drinks and attached to a delicious sandwich place to feed your drunk cravings.

Yelp
Got caught in a rain storm biking home last night and decided to make a pit stop here while the worst of the rain blew through. This bar looks kinda like a high-hat-hipster establishment from the outside but inside is so comfortable and mellow and bartender was super chill. The warm whiskey-cider was just what I needed to defrost my drenched bones. Plus they had nature videos playing on the big screen which I loved. I learned so much about cuttlefish.

Yelp
The best! Excellent sandwiches from Devil's Dill next door, lovely bartenders, good music on the stereo. Low-key, divey in spirit (but clean!), and cheap, straightforward drinks. Love 'em.
