Part hofbrau, part Chinese-American institution downtown—order BBQ pork, chow mein, and sweet-and-sour alongside hofbrau staples. Roadfood spotlighted its cross-cultural character and surprisingly excellent Chinese plates.

Came there because of recommendations from people saying its fire. It's not those people who obviously have never had great tasting food in their life. 1st off came inside, didn't even get greeted or acknowledged, and waited for 2 people ahead of me. Just saying to note I had a mobile order already placed but it was my 1st time there so I waited in line. Then it was suppose to be my turn next and some guy comes in also with a mobile order and for some reason cuts in front of me which doesn't make sense I told the older gentleman that was serving me that he had to wait his turn like everyone else and he just ignored me. Food didn't taste that good the meat on the BBQ pork seems like it's been sitting around for awhile until someone chooses it with their combo meal. Tbh I can cook better food than this I just wanted to try it out for my 1st time definitely not going back there food and customer service sucks. Go somewhere else.

Google
Check out my order. Love this place thank you !

Shelly

Google
Their food is so delicious. You can call ahead and place your order, but typically there is a wait of 5-10 minutes. However, the food is hot and some items are made to order. The price is about $10 a plate, and a large soda is $1.50. They offer Chinese food as well as sandwiches. An absolute must try when you're downtown.

Google
Took me long enough to review this place, I'd been here once before today, and I'm so glad I came here and reminded myself how good it is. The food was very quick to come to us, and absolutely delicious. The building was clean, and the staff was very efficient. Will be coming back.

Google
Been coming here for about 35 years, since I was a kid and this has been the most consistent restaurant in Modesto. Seriously, one of the best in town. I have the hardest time picking between the fresh turkey sandwich (whole turkey cut right in front of you), or the BBQ pork and rice. Honestly, I have never had a bad dish here, so no matter what you pick, you can't go wrong!

Google
I have only been two times so far. Both times I’ve ordered #20 sweet and sour chicken and their pork, with chow mien and fried rice. Great food for a decent price and large amount. The restaurant inside is a little dated but offers plenty of seats. Always busy.

Joshua

Google
If you see this place, you'll automatically think, "whole in the wall". Despite the name contradicting the main food they serve, this place has some of THE BEST Chinese food I've ever had! I got the #20 exactly how it came and got a side of chili oil and siracha, the bbq pork was perfectly sliced right in front of me, the rice wasn't dry, the chow mein noodles had good flavor, and the sweet & sour chicken was PERFECT, didn't have that old crunchy taste at all! From what I hear, the garlic chicken is good as well and the honey walnut shrimp is also a go to. I will definitely be coming back here

Google
I’ve ate here a couple times, it’s always bomb. When I want Chinese food this is typically my first choice, always fresh, fast, flavorful. However, today I was disappointed. I was halfway done with my food and I notice what looks like a baby cockroach. I would of rather saw it in the beginning and not ate at all, I was sick to my stomach when I saw it. I am not one to leave reviews. However, this was really disappointing since I enjoy this place so much, maybe the review will help them figure out the bug problem.

Yelp
Fantastic! Food is always delicious including the American food that they serve there. Open face turkey or beef sandwiches. Almost everything is fresh clean and efficient. Large portions so you can always have some leftovers. All in all great experience.

Yelp
Get ready to place your order when it is your turn. There are multiple menu boards with similar combinations of food so be ready when asked. The line comes in waves and can be really long but it moves quickly. Had the burnt ends and orange chicken and it did not disappoint. The orange chicken was super crispy on the outside and all white meat chicken on the inside and then splashed with tastiest orange sauce. The burnt ends were crispy and had the right amount of chewy to please the palate with almost a candied taste. The ambiance is cafeteria style with plenty of seating. My food was so delicious I came back twice this week. I will be back. Did I mention its pretty reasonably priced compared to other places. Last but not least the serving sizes are huge. See you next week.

Yelp
This place is sort of a diamond in the ruff...the sign is old so make sure you go slow down J street or you'll miss it (sign is hidden behind a tree). Is the atmosphere great? No, it is not. Is the older gentleman (maybe the owner?) nice? No usually...it's honestly a hit and miss. Will I keep coming back here? Absolutely!! Huge portions and delicious food! I got a variety of items to try out: Chow Mein, Sweet and Sour Pork, Egg Rolls, Rice, and chicken. Divine!

Yelp
I went here for lunch today, took 17 minutes for my order to be taken. There was five people in front of us but they had at least 4 to 5 phone calls of orders in between that. I love ordering the honey walnut chicken, today was the first time back in over a year due to my coworker has not been able to go with. it is our thing.lol. honey walnut chicken combo was amazing today, my soda had fizz that was good. The only reason I am leaving the review is I DON'T recommend buying the fried asparagus, every single piece was the end. There was not one single tip out of any of them. Definitely not worth paying $7 for.
google avatar

Mercedes Q.

Yelp
The food flavor is good, just don't expect hospitality when there. Asparagus chicken was flavorful and the sides were tasty. The place is older so bottom line if you're looking for ambiance or customer service this is not the place but if you're looking for flavor give it a try.

Yelp
Me and my dad went here and got sandwiches. To keep it short and sweet. We weren't impressed to come back. It's not horrible but not a destination location, that's for sure. I don't like giving bad reviews, but no love in this menu what so ever. It's just a place for people to eat a quick lunch that work near by. There's too many good places to eat to eat at a mediocre location.
google avatar

Christiana C.

Yelp
This place is just disgusting. The inside is all run down the outside rundown. They're nothing compared to other Hoff bras that I have been to! Just tell yourself no don't go there

Cathleen S.

Yelp
We were passing through Modesto some years ago--seven? --but Noah's Hof Brau remains a great memory thanks to our love for small restaurants that do more than one expects. It's better than the Chinese restaurants where we live, and the portions are generous. Order, eat and enjoy. If I were younger and on a first date, I'd go to Noah's. This way I'd be able to do a test. "Darling, if you don't dig Noah's, well, there's nothing more I can say, except good night."

Audrey K.

Yelp
Despite the empty interior of this place, their food is the best Chinese food in town! You order yourself at the cash register and they make it right in front of you so I can't say anything about the service. I got the #27 combo that's orange chicken, bbq pork, fried rice, and chow mein, very yummy and filling.

S S.

Yelp
Food was good. The sweet and sour chicken was a tad bit dried out but all still very good. Recommend calling your order in - wait time to order was a long wait but calling ahead allowed me to skip the line - granted I still waited a bit but definitely not as long.

Frank L.

Yelp
The food is bad quality it used to be great and they have gotten so stingy with the servings. The restaurant desperately needs a remodel or a makeover they have had the pictures on the walls since they took over the business years ago this business needs help.
google avatar

Marian I.

Yelp
Place was horrible, we had the Chinese and absolutely was not good. My daughter had the open face turkey sandwich and threw the whole thing in the garbage, wasted $15. The mashed potatoes were flakes mixed with water the most disgusting taste ever and we did not know what they made the gravy out of but it wasn't edible. The place was dirty. Sure wasn't the same as back in the day when I use to go with my mother. Would not recommend.

Yelp
Been coming to Noah's Hof Brau since my sisters where in college & it became one of my favorite places!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent food and value. Service is always great and accommodating, clean eating area simple but neat

Yelp
Had a fantastic dinner last night from Noah's. We had their Mongolian beef combo with fried rice and chow mein, garlic chicken with only chowmein, a la cart order of their sweet and sour fish, and of course we had to get a order of their deep fried asparagus, which is a seasonal dish they offer every spring. The asparagus was delightful they pair it sweet and sour sauce and my husband appreciates it but I prefer it with ranch. Their Mongolian beef is divine the meat is nice and tender and they add a little crispy noodles on top that add a nice texture to the dish. The fish is delicious, we usually get it with black bean sauce but last night we got with a garlic sauce that was fantastic. Overall Noah's is delicious, highly recommend it if you want some good Chinese food.

Monserat C.

Yelp
Great service, food is good dont let the appereance fool you. You will reget not trying it.
google avatar

Shealyn C.

Yelp
My favorite place downtown for a filling meal and always feel so warm eating it! My go to is the garlic chicken and chow mein. The chicken in all sauce options are the same, unless you get breast, and it is SO crispy! Absolutely AMAZING! So much sauce and still so crunchy, the best!

Erica R.

Yelp
I've been coming here for 15 years , my dads been bringing me here since I was a kid! It's always Great Service , Good food! I Always get sweet & sour chicken and it's always so. Crunchy. & sauce is always fresh. I Highly Recommend this place for the best Chinese food in town !

Yelp
Came in just to buy a container of white rice and fried rice and paid $19. Crazy. Customer service was not there. I see a lot of reviews mention friendly service, so maybe I came on a bad day. But it was like, all the angry uncles working and taking orders. Don't think I'll come here again.

Frances I.

Yelp
Worst Chinese food I have ever eaten! Fried prawns had so much hard coating on it could hardly bite through it and the sweet & sour pork was covered with the same coating, rest of the food was sub par too. Spent $60 and ended up throwing it out. Would have put no stars if I could have.

Yelp
I'm not really a fan of Chinese food but my mother took me here bc this is 1 of her fav places to get Chinese food at. I really didn't know what to get ao I got the fried rice, chow mein and a veggie egg roll. I was disappointed when I got home bc their default meat is pork and I should have remembered to request chicken but whatever, it's my fault. Food was okay. Noting spectacular. Anyway, the place is pretty spacious, the employees were friendly. Parking was right out front. I gave 4 stars bc service was pretty fast, employees were friendly and helpful & my whole family seems to love this place. I'm just not a fan of Chinese food so I don't want to be a Debbie downer lol.

Yelp
Excellent food & service number 12. Excellent, their chicken and foil is to experience hands-down it's the best. People have made comments about Hoffbrau being German. They still do serve the roast in the turkey slice it with all the fixings and Chinese food top shelf it used to be over by the Cove a little hole in the wall and at lunchtime people would line up for blocks it was a take out when they moved next to the fox theater. Even during Covid they took care of their customers Can only say two thumbs up because that's all I have is two thumbs
google avatar

Mary W.

Yelp
The lemon chicken was crispy and the sauce was lemony. The rice was fluffy and soft. The chow mein noodles were fat. The decor is lacking, very plain.

Alexandra A.

Yelp
Fire! Would come again!! Love this place tried it for the first time def will be back for their garlic chicken
google avatar

Kaos E.

Yelp
Been coming here for over 20 years and always get the best service and great bbq pork.

Roberto G.

Yelp
As many people that I've recommended.. he wouldn't even sell me just mash n gravy.. Says dinner or lunch plate only.... I didn't want it for Free. ..

Yelp
This place is not a hofbrau! It is a Chinese restaurant with some hofbrau items none of which are very good. My daughter ordered a hot open faced ham sandwich. I ordered a hot open faced roast beef sandwich. My husband ordered Chinese food. He was the only smart one. The only good thing to say about the hot open faced sandwiches is that the meat was ok. As far as the rest of it not so much. The mashed potatoes were obviously instant. They reminded me of the mashed potatoes that the school cafeteria had back in the 70s. They were not even as good as the instant mashed potatoes that I get from the grocery store. Even the bread tasted off. I ate about half of mine. My daughter couldn't eat hers because it was so bad. My husband told her just to box it and he would put the ham in some canned pea soup at home. He ordered her some Chinese food. This went over much better! My husband and daughter told me that it is delicious. I have to agree. My daughter had some leftovers which she wanted me to try which I did later that evening. Boy did I make a mistake ordering the hot roast beef open faced sandwich which was barely edible. My advice to the owners of this establishment is to forget the hofbrau items and stick to the Chinese food. It is what they do best! While the ambiance is not great, it has a cafeteria feel. It is the Chinese food that people come back for. This restaurant would be a five star by sticking to Chinese food and updating the decor. The new name should be Noah's Chinese Restaurant-The Best in the Central Valley!

Yelp
Fresh Chinese food. I like to go here once in a while. Fried rice with chopped pork slabs

Jill S.

Yelp
This is our go to place for Chinese food. Love the kung pao and mongolian. It's just not a place for you if you want ambiance or friendly service. Kinda gives Seinfeld soup na*i vibes. I went back to the restaurant before I finished this review. This last meal was a definite "pipe cleaner" for my whole family, as we all fell ill shortly after eating our meal. I guess we need to find a new "go to " .

Yelp
I've been going to get food at this place for about 25 years. I'm not been disappointed a single time. The people there are friendly, they remember you, and they're attentive to your food. The portions are good the prices are good and the food is cooked fresh everyday. I've gone there at lunch time. I've got there around 3:00. I've gone there in the evening. Every time the same taste and the food is nicely kept warm. This place has stayed alive through a fire, through downtown changes, through covid, and the food still fine. It is good to see a place like this stay open for such long time. I recommend it to everyone who likes eating good food at a reasonable price. Thank you for the great service you provide and I pray that you stay open for a very long time you're part of downtown Modesto.

Troy J.

Yelp
My wife and I ate here on Friday. I thought the Chinese food was really good. However my wife had a turkey sandwich. It was awful. The turkey tasted like packing material and was dry. Looked like it was boiled. She actually threw up after we got home. They need to remove the Hoff Brau sign. It is misleading. They should stick to the Chinese menu.
google avatar

Rhonda B.

Yelp
Noah's is a good go-to place for freshly made Chinese food, or, if you're in the mood for a hot turkey or roast beef sandwich, they have those too! Noah's has been in business for many, many years and is especially busy at lunchtime. Even with a long line, they are very fast & keep the fresh food coming. Not fancy, but really good & very large portions.
google avatar

Robert V.

Yelp
One of my favorite Chinese food in Modesto always the same and on point and fresh don't matter if it's been a years or a week later that I order food always fresh and the same very good. p.S I would of sent pic of food but ate it lmao
google avatar

Hal D.

Yelp
Yummy the Chinese food is the bomb. I recommend the Mongolian beef or chicken. Enjoy.
google avatar

Karla A.

Yelp
Loveee it here! I frequently think about the #24 garlic chicken with bbq pork and fried rice. (I also recommend asking for extra garlic sauce to pour over your rice it is amazing!) I also love their hot sandwiches with Turkey and mashed potatoes The staff is straight to the point and a bit direct but I think it adds to the charm. This is one of the few restaurants I have saved in my contacts list lol.

Joulieanna D.

Yelp
Delicious food! I always order the bbq pork and orange chicken. Garlic chicken is great too. Large portions and priced well. If you're looking for a new spot to try, this place will not disappoint.

Jamie H.

Yelp
Shared fried rice and sweet and sour pork with a friend. It was really good! The fried rice did not disappoint! Pork was fried nicely and came out hot. I was impressed. The place itself is a little bare inside and not the most inviting place in my opinion, but for the product we got it was worth it.
google avatar

Zach T.

Yelp
Mehhh nothing special. Food is mediocre. Service is really bad. Speed is not there at all. They are basically Chinese/sandwich - soup Nazis. "No food for you!"
google avatar

Steven J.

Yelp
Horrible customer service!!! They have great food, but they lost me as a customer today. Went in, got in line waited for an employee to come to the counter & when he finally did some lady (bein nice) came up behind me in line & yells out to the employee, calling him by name, and asks for an order or cheese won tons. Employee then, still not acknowledging me, turns around, grabs a container & disappears into the kitchen. Still no sorry, no excuse me, no nothing! Sorry you just lost a lifelong customer for some rude a** b**** & her $10 order of cheer wontons! Too bad. I have spent hundreds of not more & was about to give u another $60+ on this order alone. Good job dips***!!!!
google avatar

Jeremy M.

Yelp
Noah's gets 5 starts for their fast and consistent service. It can feel a little "no soup for you" if you don't know what's going on, but the family that has operated this restaurant for decades knows how to keep customers coming back! The food is just as consistent. Might you find better food elsewhere? Sure. But there will never be a BBQ Pork sandwich anywhere on the planet that even comes close. Nor will you find better Chinese food at a hofbrau than you'll find at this Modesto landmark!

Kathlyn Y.

Yelp
Best Mongolian beef in town! Super tender spicy but not too spicy and I LOVE the crunchy little noodles they top it with LARGE portions
google avatar

Juan L.

Yelp
The #19 is one of my favorites! I also recommend the garlic chicken plate and don't forget the egg rolls.
google avatar

Joe Riggs P.

Yelp
A hole in the wall joint. The food here is bomb but I just order the same thing. The walnut shrimp and chow mein are to die for. Just wish they were open later.
google avatar

Hailey H.

Yelp
Very good food! I really enjoy coming here! I normally get the pork with rice and the flavor is amazing! I took some friends and my mom here one time and they loved it as well! Definitely worth a visit!
google avatar

Tara I.

Yelp
Always the best! You know exactly what you are getting never changed for the last 30 years. Never disappoints! #16 and the homemade hot mustard is hands down a game changer!
google avatar

Fred F.

Yelp
Are you hungry and just want a gut filler? This will suffice. Not horrible at all, but not a place I'd come to for great flavor. Service at the counter , at least for me , not a regular , was matter of fact and non interactive, other than what do you want. That's pretty much what I'd expect. More lively conversation with regular customers I saw and heard would be nice and more friendly I guess for non regulars.
google avatar

Patrick M.

Yelp
I been coming to this place from Stockton where I live since 1995 under the previous owners, who retired in late 96 or early 97. The current owners changed nothing and the quality of food over the years still maintains top standards. Their turkey sandwiches are some of the best I ever had and their Chinese food is great too. Their garlic sauce is outstanding on their chicken and prawns. Everything I had hear over the years is good. Never get tired of coming here and the inside has maintained that dated old school look, which I also like. Open for indoor dining again minus the tables and chairs in the middle, but the booths you can sit at.
google avatar

Phanno V.

Yelp
Went in, stood in the front of the line for 8minutes. Not one person in front of me. Worker ended up making 4 sandwiches in front of us, with not one word from him. All he could've said was let me make these and I'll be with you, but it was the most silent 8minutes ever. Terrible customer service. Went out to the Phoenix noodle house down the street and wasn't disappointed. I'd give 0 stars if I could.
