The Best Hotels for a Romantic Roman Holiday

"Set within the late-19th-century Palazzo Mereghi, whose neo-Renaissance style nods to the 16th century, this modern incarnation recreates the environments of four Roman noblewomen from the 16th and 17th centuries—one suite dedicated to each—complete with soaring ceilings, Renaissance-style frescoes, Venetian mosaic tile floors, and even room to entertain if you prefer to keep the party private." - The MICHELIN Guide

Nobildonne Relais

"How did it strike you on arrival?Nobildonne Relais is a thing of wonder. Make your way through the internal courtyard, past the stone sculptures and trickling fountains, and you’ll find this is no guesthouse; rather, it’s the Roman palace that you were born to have. There’s no big, flashy reception – instead, a ceiling of frescos, adorned by a crystal chandelier, and a beautiful table where Francesco, Martina and Giulia will welcome you, along with owners (and architects) Alessia and Stefano, who will pass you the keys to your new digs. Nice. What’s the crowd like?Other travelers? Sure, they’re here—in the form of that Chanel bag being whisked up the stairs, or the flash of red Louboutins striding across the courtyard—but with just four private suites, there’s little chance you’ll see them. Complete, utter privacy is part of the package here. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. Each of the four suites are named after fiery noblewomen of Rome: Paolina Borghese, Donna Olimpia Pamphili, Beatrice Cenci, and Lucrezia Borgia. We love the Paolina Borghese suite, with its dusky pink and grey palette, ceiling covered in frescoes, and bespoke marble tiling. There are two rooms in this suite, making it ideal for families, or just couples who want a little more space. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?We’d spend the night in the plush double bed, complete with a memory foam topper—but come siesta time, go for one of two single beds. No matter the boudoir, all the pillows are pure goose-feather indulgence, the sheets made from Egyptian cotton so soft you'll be tempted to wear them as a robe, Roman-style. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? No detail has been scrimped on, from the Portuguese pink marble bathroom to the covetable antique mirror that, frankly, we’d like to pack in our suitcase and take back home. The welcome Prosecco and peppery aperitif mix go down a treat, and the Nespresso machine is glorious, too. But it's the free minibar that really stands out, packed with all sorts of goodies, like whiskeys, grappas, tequilas and gin. Go for it all. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. The waterfall shower was so good you won't want to leave. The towels are toasty warm, and the Neroli products were decently-sized. There’s even hand and foot cream, to soothe your feet after a day exploring the city. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Wi-Fi is strong, unwavering, and free. Just the way we like it. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.The concierge here is the best kind: invisible, but magically able to book you a Vespa tour, hire a private car, or nab you that table at your favorite booked-out-for-months restaurant. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay?We love the salon: a perfect pre- or post-aperitivo retreat, complete with armchairs you can sink into and a crackling fireplace, all beneath a gorgeous fresco-decorated ceiling. Bottom line: worth it, and why? This is a knockout of a hotel, worth the money for the very best in laid-back luxury." - Maresa Manara

Nobildonne Relais (Rome, Lazio) 33 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Quite a few Roman hotels treat the city’s ancient history as a contrasting background note, and feel free to pursue their own vision in an unapologetically modern direction. But Nobildonne Relais dives deep into its past. The Palazzo Mereghi was built in the late 19th century, but in a neo-Renaissance style that vividly recalls the 16th. In its modern incarnation it seeks to recreate the environments of four Roman noblewomen from the 16th and 17th centuries, to each of whom it dedicates one of its four lavish suites." - Tablet Hotels

Nibbledons Relais is a charming hotel in the heart of Rome. I stayed there during a business trip with my mother, and it turned out to be the perfect choice. The location is excellent — central and convenient — allowing my mother to enjoy her time exploring while I attended my meetings. Although the building is old, it has been beautifully renovated with modern technology. You can access the property through a digital link for the main door and a keypad for the hotel entrance, which makes everything easy and secure. The hotel itself feels like a cozy Italian apartment, featuring authentic décor and a nostalgic old elevator that adds to its charm. The bed was very comfortable, although the cushions were not as soft — but the front desk is always happy to help if you need extra pillows or support. The bathroom has a standing shower with one small step, so if you’re traveling with someone elderly, you might want to request a more accessible room. What makes this place truly special is the owner’s personal touch — the wall portrait her own artwork, The ceiling paint is reflecting the elegance of old Italian art and adding a warm, authentic character to the space. Special thanks to the front desk team — Alla, KC, and Daria — for being so welcoming, helpful, and always smiling. They responded quickly to my messages and made my stay even more pleasant. Overall, it’s a lovely blend of history, comfort, and modern convenience — a great choice for both business and leisure stays in Rome.

I can't say enough wonderful things about Nobildonne Relais. The entire team there, especially KC, Alla, and Danielle, were warm, welcoming, and helpful throughout my stay. ||The location of the hotel is excellent—surrounded by luxury shops and delightful cafes, and close to the Spanish Steps, though far enough away from them so that the street isn't completely full of tourists. It's about a 10-minute walk to the Pantheon and a 28-minute walk across the river to the Vatican City, so it's well-located for touring Rome. It's also a close walk to some really unique intimate museums, such as the Keats-Shelley house and the Giorgio de Chirico house, and my friend and I also enjoyed the Galleria Pamphilj, which houses some amazing Caravaggios. ||The rooms at NR are beautiful, with incredible frescoes on the ceilings, shuttered windows, comfortable beds, and good plumbing. The rooms also include complimentary espresso, tea, and a welcome bottle of sparkling wine. During my stay I needed to hire a courier to pick up a ticket, and Alla was super helpful in arranging that. Thank you for your hospitality, I can't wait to visit again.

What a gem! Fantastic location with comfortable rooms and relaxing atmosphere. We stayed in the Cenci Junior Suite. The service and recommendations are really what set this place a part! Alla and the rest of the front desk team were so responsive and committed to helping us have the best visit possible. Their restaurant recommendations were the best, too! Everything from a special night out to an easy sandwich spot - their recommendations were all delicious, well-priced, and spots that locals enjoyed as much as visitors.

Wonderful home that has been converted into a plush, comfortable, warm hotel that still makes you feel you are in a home. Exceptional service, hygeine and an old world charm with modern amenities. The staff is outstanding and attentive to your every need. A special mention of Darya who went out of her way to organise a last minute tour for us.

Excelllent suite type hotel with the most marvellous team looking after every need I can think of: including my getting a bit sick and Alla even found possible docs and appointments! Everyone there are just beautiful in character and warmth: Alla, Kaycee, Jabal and Ulzhan/ and the wonderful lady who did an immaculate job in making the room so welcoming after trudging in Rome. The place is central|As can be and exudes style and discernment . I will definitely go back again next time in Rome: in fact the only place to stay! ❤️❤️❤️

Google
excellent suite kind of hotel, but with that feel of a home away from home, and a classy elegant one at that. Magnificent help always from Alla, Jabal, Kaycee and Ulzhan, and the warm cleaning everyday, with impeccable room every day. It was indeed a joy to stay here and will do so again. The position is excellent and I personally stayed 13 nights here and each was superb. I cannot recommend enough Nobildonne Relais.

More than a hotel - an experience in itself, adding immeasurably to our brief stay in Rome. The rooms are extremely stylish and comfortable, and staff were super friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble. Their restaurant recommendations were an added bonus. The location is perfect, near the Spanish Steps, yet tucked away enough to be away from crowds and noise. We'll be back!
