The best restaurants and bars near Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis | Eater Twin Cities

"One of the most consistently busy places in the neighborhood is the Nokomis Beach Cafe. You’ll know you’re there by the jolly canoe-planter marking its place on the corner of 50th and 28th. One word to sum up why NBC is on the list? Waffles. Two more words? All. Day. Plus there are mile-high sandwiches made to order in front of your drooling face with bread baked same-day from A Baker’s Wife just down the street. Friendly baristas top it all off with a specialty ‘Noko’ coconut-inspired mocha or cold press brewed to perfection. With huge picture windows and only one block between you and Lake Nokomis, it’s no surprise Nokomis Beach Coffee is a favorite of the neighborhood locals." - Eater Staff

Very cool local coffee shop! Privately owned. NOT Starbucks! Been here 30 years. Known as the place with a canoe!!!! (Planter) Thank you Kevin! Friendly staff. Good pastries. Of course great coffee!

My husband and I visited Nokomis Beach Coffee, and it was a fantastic experience. I ordered the cardamom and vanilla iced latte along with a Mediterranean wrap, and both were absolutely delicious. My husband decided to ask the barista for their favorite drink and food, and it turned out to be such a great choice that I’m going to do the same next time! The vibe is cozy and welcoming, making it the perfect spot to relax by the lake. We’ll definitely be coming back!

Google
We would give this a 4 or 5 for atmosphere but it is way way too noisy. There is a compressor going out that you might not hear after being there for a long time but we could hardly have a discussion in there. Coupled with the noisy coffee machines it was almost unbearable. Our food and drinks were fabulous. Keep it up!

Google
I love that this place is still here 25 years after I started owning a house in south Minneapolis. And, even though I don’t always live as close anymore, I like that this place is still there. It still has the same horribly heavy front door that I wish they’d fix, but the food is good, they have all of the classic coffee drinks, it is just so fun just to walk in and order very cinnamon-ee apple pie, and it’s saved me so many times with soup on a cold day, breakfast on a weekend, and a sandwich (made to order) when I just can’t cook or want to take an impromptu picnic to the lake. I just love it. Thank you for being there for me/us all these years!

Google
Great little coffee shop in Minneapolis. Aesthetically pleasing. Friendly service. Cute renovated building for the locals in this community. Conveniently located in next to Lake Nokomis. Enjoyed my Numi Tea and a Carmel Pecan Pull Apart, which we were very good. Somewhat busy, but in a good way and well managed.

Every time I come in here I wonder why I don’t come more often! Great coffee & other drinks, nice staff, good food, lovely baked goods and in my neighborhood! Love their roasted whole bean coffee to take home too! They sell fresh Christmas trees too and the building is lovely. Highly recommend.

Google
My husband and I love this coffee shop! Very cute and local with parking. We love both of their mochas (white chocolate (iced noko) and the regular mocha). The price to size ratio is also very good! About $6.50 for a large iced mocha and it is definitely a decent size (and delicious).

Google
This is an unassuming little spot that has turned into one of my favorite coffee spots. I really appreciate all the community vibes here. There are always people here having conversations and enjoying each others company. It is not a craft coffee shop or hipster café and while I do enjoy those, it is nice to come here and just take a relaxing break and have a roasted coffee or strong latte and hang out with my wife in a friendly unpretentious space. (A space often filled with very wonderful local artist works & some truly legit Lego creations) Even when I am not a customer, I am a big walker and I love to walk by and deeply appreciate the sidewalks full of patrons in the summer and passing by the fresh Christmas tree sale in the winter. It really makes this little neighborhood corner more lively and fun. I highly recommend you support this place and the owners do many things that contribute greatly to the quality of life nearby.

Yelp
This morning was our second visit to Nokomis Beach Coffee in the past year. It is a decent little neighborhood coffee shop offering your typical coffee and espresso drinks, as well as some lunch and breakfast food options. The staff were friendly and nice and it was super quick to get our coffees. We got an iced mocha and an iced cinnamon latte. Both were tasty--not the best we've had but good enough to stop by again if we're in the area. We also ordered a chocolate croissant and the All Day Breakfast nordic waffle (bacon egg cheese). The croissant is your typical croissant and can't really go wrong with that. I don't think I'd order the Nordic waffle again. It did the job but was nothing to write home about. Some of the other food I saw coming out, however, looked a lot better, such as their sandwiches and wraps. They have a fair amount of indoor seating and plenty of outdoor seating. The inside could maybe use a few updates and it is quite loud. Overall, it is a convenient spot to grab a coffee or quick bite if you're in the area, but not something to go out of your way for.

Yelp
Great little neighborhood coffee shop with art store connected. Right next to an area worth taking a stroll if you want while you have your favorite beverage!!

Yelp
Love this cute coffee shop so close to the lake and in such a cute neighborhood. The coffee was amazing, and so was the sandwich, salad and salad our group had. Fresh ingredients!

Yelp
Look at this...this is a salami sandwich from this place...what the hell is going on here?

W W.

Yelp
Great little coffee shop that's been around quite a while..selection good and staff are great! It would be such a more welcoming place if they spent some time on making it quieter all around. I went it recently, it was packed and extremely loud, like borderline dangerously unhealthy. Please consider some professional sound deadening, it will really improve your entire shop and also improve the slightly worn and tired look of the place!

Yelp
Had a lovely decaf latte while sitting outside with friends underneath a canopy to protect us from the rain. A beautiful view of the lake. Turkeys were crossing the street providing entertainment. They closed at 4:00 on a Tuesday so we walked to the very nearby lake to use their port-a-potties.

Kerry C.

Yelp
Delicious! I used to live by this coffee shop and went there frequently it's been years and it brought so much nostalgia, not much has changed. Thanks Nokomis Beach Coffee!

Bennett W.

Yelp
Weird vibe. The manager (or who I assume is the manager) kept "jokingly" yelling at the employees and it was just kinda weird. Ordered a Greek Chicken wrap and it didn't have any chicken in it... even so, if it had chicken it would have been subpar at best. anyway-- felt more like a neighborhood spot/vibe where there are regulars that always come in and like it but I wouldn't recommend as a place to study/work.

Yelp
A stone's throw from Lake Nokomis, a friend and I stopped by after walking around the lake to warm up. I appreciated their easy access parking lot and ample spacing they gave to their indoor and outdoor seating and other COVID precautions. With a large menu of beverage and bakery items, I'll be sure to stop by next time I'm in the area. Nokomis Beach Coffee is an ideal corner coffee shop!

Yelp
My husband and I come here every Saturday morning to get coffee and the breakfast waffles. The staff are very friendly and they truly have the best coffee! Love supporting local. This is bar far our favorite coffee shop!
google avatar

William B.

Yelp
Great ice cream and waffles! Place is usually pretty packed, seating and dine experience are annoyingly awful. Everything is serve single use and is bad for environment...shameful "woke" coffee shop. Little tiny sandwiches and poor customer service are why I have to rate them 2 stars. Very overpriced for quality

Yelp
Love love love the location. A few blocks off lake nokomis, so the perfect place to grab coffee and park before walking around the lake! Lots of great seating options outside and a very friendly and local coffee shop feel. I always get the iced NoKo and it does not disappoint!

Elder S.

Yelp
I've been here a few times and always had good coffee and good service until today. The kids working both needed lessons in customer service. The girl taking orders could not figure out how to give proper change when I tried to get rid of some pennies. She shortchanged me, and when I brought it to her attention she looked at me like I was trying to cheat her. I was not going to argue over a few pennies so I told her to forget it. Then when I went to pick up my Americano the young man asked me if I wanted any cream. I told him just a touch. He proceeded to pour in enough to overflow the cup and make a mess on the counter. Then he placed the cover on my cup (which was full to the top) so that when I took it off, It spilled again. I usually try to help out local business, but guess next time I'll pay by credit card and Nokomis can pick up the service charge.

Mitz O.

Yelp
Had a delicious pecan pastry and latte that were delicious! Loved the local feel to this shop and friendly service.

Yelp
came here for a week while stationed nearby. the staff was fantastic, the coffee was fantastic, and I love supporting local businessss. fyi, on a low carb diet, but the pastries tempted me every single day! muffins, and cookies, and waffle sausage blast packs!!!! if I lived nearby, I would come here every day and thank the THOR, that I had this wonderful of place near me, that cared for me, and gave me good strong coffee! miss you guys, see you soon.

Yelp
It's that odd space between traditional and modern, and I wouldn't call it cozy. They have bar seating and table seating. They don't have couches or booths. It also looks old, and could stand to be updated. I was in the bar seating, and someone came in after me and couldn't stay put. They were constantly walking back and forth behind me, usually bumping into my backpack, which was well out of the way of space between the chair and the other table. But I'm not sure if that person work there or not, because they were constantly back and forth and sometimes loading things. They were at least enough of a regular to know a lot of the people there, and maybe it was the boss or friend of the boss. it wasn't that the person was there, it's that they kept moving around and bumping into my backpack when there was plenty of space. Very uncomfortable. The servers were very polite, though. And I would say they have decently sized food portions further small food menu. The place is also accessible, with no entryway step, and two ways to enter and exit. I'm not saying I'll never come back, but I'm certainly not in a hurry to with sisters' sludge and fireroast as other nearby options.

Yelp
Lovely coffee shop located in S. Minneapolis. The white chocolate mocha they made was delicious. Had a fruity touch to it that complemented the drink well. Good place to socialize and grab a cup of coffee or tea.
google avatar

Jon H.

Yelp
Stopped by for a cold brew coffee. Pretty standard overall. Maybe a touch smokier than others, but pretty darn close to the same thing you get at most places. Overall: I'd stop by again if in the area and craving coffee, but won't go out of my way.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place! It is my home away from home. This is truly a place where the owners, Dennis and Mary, make you feel like family. The food and pastries are always fresh and good, and prices are reasonable. I'm a Nordic waffle regular, but the Greek chicken wrap comes in a close second. And the coffee quality? Second to none.

Tammy M.

Yelp
I've been waiting to experience the "friendly staff" others have referenced. Staff have not been friendly as of yet ..Still waiting...

Yelp
Walking distance from the lake (and my house!), friendly baristas, cheap ice cream, outdoor seating--- yayyyyyyy! Ice cream prices are deliciously cheap at under 2 bucks for a single scoop cone. Flavors available are taped to the side of a cooler next to the front register (newbie tip-- I didn't know when I walked in!). Good variety-- I tried the carmelicious and it was to die for! Salty not too sweet caramel flavor with chocolate caramel candy pieces inside. Husband had a chocolate malt-- came out bigger than your typical malt (id call the size a medium or large cup). Malt was 4.50. Next time you're wandering around Lake Nokomis and need a treat-- it's just up the hill from the walking path on 50th street.
google avatar

Slade K.

Yelp
Can't say enough great things about them. Their ice coffees are killer along with the rest of their lineup. Always friendly and a great place to work for a couple of hours or grab something after a day at the beach.
google avatar

Kelsey F.

Yelp
The biggest thing that bothered me is they did not have a "dine in" option, and served everything in single use plastics or paper - so disappointing for a local business to not be environmentally conscious. Not very impressed with the coffee. Also, they do have free WiFi, but you honestly cannot do any reasonable work on it.
google avatar

Brent M.

Yelp
I stopped in here to get a small lunch. I got a tuna sandwich that was so so. I wouldn't get it again. But the strawberry ice cream was very tasty and I would stop back in just for that. The owner was also very friendly and funny so I would enjoy his quick jokes again.

Yelp
The food choices and quality give this historic location five stars. The build your own sandwich choice of breads meat and cheese and other options gives you plenty of room for variety on each visit. The bakery products are among the best from The Baker's Wife. There are usually at least two people behind the counter to handle the traffic. This is one of the older coffee places and after a brisk walk around Lake Nokomis many of us like to relax with a cold or hot drink or snack. Even in the dead of Winter the shop has a nice warm feeling with stained glass and sunny interior with large old radiators from another era. It can get crowded at mid-day which creates a difficult navigation to an empty table because the seating is close and the chairs tend to crowd the way as people generally don't push their chairs in when they leave. (Didn't your Moms teach you?) Many customers in this shop seem to not care about busing their own mess and employees don't really have time to keep clearing tables so some of us have to pick up dirty dishes and napkins to clear a place to sit. The table tops and chairs tend to always be crumb covered which would be the only negative and this is not the owner's fault. I do like the sign posted, "Unattended children will be given an espresso and kitten."

Yelp
This place is in my neighborhood but I'd never popped in because I wasn't really aware they had more than just coffee. I'm happy to report that this little joint is pretty awesome. I stopped by on a Friday afternoon and there were probably at least 7 or 8 people hanging out doing coffee-shop stuff: work on a laptop, talking, eating, drinking. I ordered a turkey sandwich on some delicious ciabatta bread (presumably from A Baker's Wife). They have a nice selection of fixings for the sandwiches. I also got a bowl of the bean and bacon soup. The bread really made the sandwich work. It was large and filling, but I still had room for the rather good soup. I washed it down with a very refreshing glass of iced tea. I found the atmosphere here to be really chill and relaxing, and read the newspaper while eating. The staff was very friendly, and I found my experience to be the opposite of some of the complaints listed in other reviews. The people there tried to make sure you were satisfied, not the other way around. I would certainly recommend this neat spot for lunch or a drink if you are nearby or perhaps spending the afternoon on the lakes.

Yelp
I stopped here after seeing a few reviews on Yelp. I had just gotten off a flight from the East Coast and planned to stay with friends nearby. It was my first time in the area and this place was within walking distance. The ambience was comfortable and inviting. I felt very relaxed sitting inside sipping an excellent cup of local coffee and eating a wrap. The wrap was what I had expected--not earth shattering, but it lessened the feeling of hunger I had traveled with. I'd probably go again for coffee and good conversation outside if I lived in the area. Also, a benefit is that it is very close to a beautiful body of water--I highly recommend grabbing coffee and walking to the water. As I was leaving, I did witness a woman yell at another woman for having left her child in the car while running in for coffee (she definitely should not have done that on a day like that). The child was fine, but the experience made for some excitement during my first few hours in the area. That was random, but worthwhile mentioning.

Yelp
Nice little corner coffee shop that we found on the fly. But it certainly serves a fine cuppa that will do the trick. From the quick glance we got, seemed like there was a good amount of seating and some nice big windows that let lots of sunlight in at the front of the store. The menu was divided up by type of coffee and pretty straight-forward. The coffee was good, prepared quickly and served with a smile. No complaints. Saw a case full of delicious baked goods that would be worth a try next time we are back as well.
google avatar

Nathan L.

Yelp
Came in for a quick cup of coffee to start the day and it was a nice little cafe. They had a terrific patio area to sit on that wraps around the building if you can find an open seat. Also it is very close to the lake so it is a good place to stop in and grab a cup'o joe and cruise the lake on a nice morning. We tried the house brew and it was some pretty standard coffee at a reasonable price.
google avatar

Chris T.

Yelp
Great little shop. Patio area is great for much of the year, fun local vibe, quick service, and while we're on that subject, this last time I was in, the gentleman serving me asked if I had time for him to wash my travel mug out quickly. I said sure and he proceeded to make that nasty old thing shine like I have never seen. This is the kind of extra touch that is rare.
google avatar

Ally C.

Yelp
I like the vibe in here, my coffee tasted great and the food tasted fine. My only complaint is that there is lots of cobwebs and dust everywhere, and also I saw mouse poop next to a plant in the window sill... Off putting to say the least. Other wise great, if you ask me.
google avatar

Lizzie B.

Yelp
One star for location and proximity to Lake Nokomis. This is a cute enough little cafe that can be found by the iconic canoe garden out front. They have great coffee, pastries and ice cream for a sweet treat after a day on the beach. I've found the sandwiches and soups to be average, but this area of town is a bit of a food desert so they can win with mediocre in this arena. Great for sitting outside and people watching or pretending to work on a sunny day.
google avatar

Krystal L.

Yelp
We stopped here on the way to Minnehaha Falls. Really nice staff and the coffee was smooth and not too sweet. This would be a regular place for us if we lived in Minneapolis.
google avatar

BleepBloop P.

Yelp
What a nice little find! I just starting working by the airport and thought this area was no man's land, and I'd be stuck with whatever's in the office vending machine. This corner cafe reminds me of a tiny piece of Manhattan Beach in the Los Angeles area where I grew up. It's a cute cafe by Lake Nokomis full of neighborhood personalities where the owners know everyone by name. I think I annoyed the regulars with my indecisiveness, but I couldn't decide whether I wanted a slice of what looked like an amazing home baked apple pie, or the Nordic breakfast waffle. I'm definitely stopping by here more often!
google avatar

Cristina D.

Yelp
Great service and great coffee. Tried the waffle with seasonal fresh fruit (bananas, Boo!). Also had a cup of the vegetarian cilantro chili, but did not see or taste any cilantro. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.

Emma M.

Yelp
I love this place! Their COVID precautions are great and make it easy to get in and out quickly. I've gotten chai and multiple of their food options which were reasonably priced and tasted amazing.
google avatar

Komal T.

Yelp
Reached there on a sunny afternoon and apparently they have no air conditioning indoors! It was really stuffy.
google avatar

Emanuel S.

Yelp
Love this place! Such great atmosphere and the outside seating is great on a nice sunny day ... especially since you have views off Lake Nokomis. The staff is always very friendly and creates that neighborhood feeling to the whole business. They have delicious (and probably calorie filled) specialty drinks but their basic black cup of coffee is also very good and never tastes acidic or old. They also have good desserts and food. There's free WiFi which is a nice bonus when you're there to do some work. I love having this place in walking distance from my house.

Stephanie W.

Yelp
Not sure if owners were having a bad day or what but they were extremely short with customers. The female owner attacked us verbally when we stated we felt it was not a good experience. I asked her to please leave us alone so we could eat and she kept asking questions. We stated multiple times what our issue was and she would not stop questioning us . Definitely would not go back.
google avatar

Aric F.

Yelp
A perfect lakeside retreat! Some of the best coffee in south Minneapolis. They have sandwiches and salads for meals and make sure to try the Nordic waffles for breakfast!
google avatar

Nick H.

Yelp
Nice local shop by Lake Nokomis! Good prices for sandwiches, and good coffee. I think the pastries come from down the street at bakers wife, which is a plus! My roommate always gets an "iced noko" and for a while he was addicted. Try one if you like sweet coffee drinks! Lots of outdoor seating!!!!
google avatar

Tori M.

Yelp
Salads - great Ice cream- great Vibe - great regular coffee - sure lattes- not so great. whenever I visit my sister who lives in the neighborhood, I stop by here out of convenience and coziness. but I do not like their lattes. i'm not sure why. as I have used many espresso machines (at home and in my former life in restaurant work) I have tried to figure it out. I had a hard time finding any lattes I liked in Minneapolis. so maybe a friend of mine is right, he said the water is so different from where I live that the milk doesn't heat the same way. I don't know. I can't fault them for it. but i'm still looking for a latte that tastes like home when I go to Minneapolis. (btw I don't care if you call them au lait's or latte's. I just want good espresso with steamed milk and no foam).
google avatar

Rose P.

Yelp
Great mocha, great veggie sandwich, friendly staff, and didn't have to wait long for it. Outdoor seating looked nice although I took my order to go.
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
This is a really nice, convenient coffee shop for anyone in the neighborhood and visitors to Lake Nokomis. It's not a coffee shop for coffee lovers or coffee snobs but it's comfortable, welcoming and a really nice place to chill for a while and grab something to drink. I love dropping in and grabbing a coffee before I walk around the lake or grab a cold drink on a summer's day after I've been for a ride around the lake. If you're in the 'hood you should totally check it out.
google avatar

Nancy M.

Yelp
Good, affordable place for a cup of coffee and a treat. The place is small and typically packed with locals from the neighborhood. Usually stop in after work for a quick cup and the drip is always superb. Parking is available in small lot near front of business.
google avatar

Karen S.

Yelp
It is hard for me to give cute neighborhood spots anything less than 3 or 4 stars, but my last visit here was so ridiculous, that I can't help myself! Stopped in for a sandwich. When I asked for my sandwich with tomato, the guy (who clearly doesn't enjoy his job) says, "We don't have tomato." I do one of those "whaaaa?" and say "Oh, are you out." He replies, with a straight face, "No, we don't have tomato here." Seriously? I wait while he makes my sandwich, and as I'm looking at the menu, I see several salad options with tomato. Whatevs. My sandwich is pretty boring. The bread was good, but the turkey was tasted like cheap sandwich meat you'd buy at the grocery store. I won't be back for sandwiches, but this is probably OK for a coffee or beverage.
google avatar

Alycia M.

Yelp
I wanted to try somewhere new, so I met a friend at Nokomis Beach Coffee. When I walked in, the place was empty. The baristas were not very friendly, maybe it was an off day for them. They did not greet either of us and barely acknowledged our existence. I ordered an iced coffee and it was good. I will need to go back to try some of their other drinks. They have a lot of outdoor seating, so we sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful day. Parking: I had no issues finding a parking spot. There is parking on the street and there is a small gravel parking lot on the side of the building. I am a stickler about customer service, especially at coffee shops. My morning coffee is important to me.

Yelp
I was going to a show at the Riverside Theater and we were in search of dinner. I didnt want "cafe food" like prepackaged sandwiches and day old muffins so we avoided everything on that block and started driving far far away. Somehow we got lost and ended up in some residential neighborhood way south and east of the theater. I dont even know where we were when we finally stopped at Nokomis Beach Coffee, but we were tired of searching and decided to settle for cafe food. To my surprise they had a lot of homemade things and it was all delicious. I got the "half" sandwich and soup deal which ended up being pretty dang gigantic. I cant imagine what the whole sandwich must look like but I remember thinking it would be hard to fit on the plate. Anyway, it was a great sandwich on crusty focaccia bread with avocado, cheese, and some kind of dill spread. It's one of those choose one item from all three columns type of deal. It turned out great and with a tasty little bowl of minestrone, I was full and happy. The red tea looked interesting and I would want to go back and try it. Too bad I will probably never have a reason to be over in this neighborhood again :(

Yelp
On my way to the Pond Hockey Championships, I realized a cup of coffee might brighten this otherwise dreary day. What a cute little spot! Nice and airy with an attached gift/florist store, it's a great neighborhood spot. With reasonable prices and free wifi, I just might need to add Nokomis Beach Coffee to my workday cafe tour. While my coffee was nothing to write home about, I definitely paid more and had worse at some of our local chains. After reading the other reviews, I'm looking forward to trying their food eventually.

Yelp
Great neighborhood coffee shop. Very good soups and sandwiches and a great outdoor seating area. Christmas trees in December. Definately check it out. Free WiFi!
