Nollie’s Cafe Closes After Ten Years in South Lake Union | Eater Seattle

"I saw Nollie’s, a homespun South Lake Union café, close at the end of last month after more than a decade in business; it was beloved by regulars and reportedly boasted an 80 percent customer retention rate. The owners posted the news to their social media accounts without offering a reason and the cafe didn’t respond to Eater’s inquiry before press time. Known for a homemade, from-scratch approach, the menu leaned on breakfast sandwiches, cinnamon roll French toast, BLTs, tomato bisque, and baked goods like scones, lemon bars, and chocolate chip cookies. With its handwritten signs and toy animal figurines, the cafe stood in stark contrast to the shiny Amazon buildings that sprouted around it, and it wouldn’t come as a huge surprise if the closure was in some way tied to the tech-related building boom that has so thoroughly changed the neighborhood." - Megan Hill

Google
What a gem for taco lovers. Everything was amazing. The full monty is worth every penny. Susan was absolutely the best. We will be back.

Shane J.

Google
Awesome food! Nollie’s is a fun super casual place with a full-on skater vibe. Get the pulled pork nachos. They are fantastic. I also really enjoyed the grilled mahi burrito. Can’t imagine anything bad comes out of the kitchen.

Stefanie L.

Google
Service and ambiance were awesome. The whole taco place is skateboard themed. From the name of the restaurant to items on the menu and the skateboards attached to the ceiling, it was such a vibe! The food was good but definitely had better tacos! You come here for the chill and affordable ambiance and get to eat some yammi food but it won’t be like your authentic hole in the wall taco joint.

Google
Swung in after a soccer tournament to get a quick bite before heading home. Fast & friendly service! Delicious food!! (even to go!)

Google
If you're looking for tasty tacos on Pleasure Island that offer a unique twist beyond the usual American flavors, Nollie's is a solid choice. They use fresh ingredients, and the flavors really stand out. They also have the best selection of hot sauces on the island. The vibe is laid-back with a casual skater feel, making it a nice spot to grab tacos, burritos, or quesadillas. I especially enjoyed the grilled mahi tacos. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area!

Google
Great food, service and atmosphere! I highly recommend checking this place out if you come to the Carolina beach NC area.

Google
BEST tacos in NC hands down. We absolutely love this place and the vibe. The staff and owners here care about the quality of food and service they provide. Couldn't be happier with our choice. Highly recommend in your in the area to check these guys out.

Google
amazing spot for great tacos honestly! i was a bit shy to ask for hot sauce but the meat was absolutely amazing. really good prices and service would def come back.

Yelp
Great service, tasty tacos and pet friendly with pet tacos. Never disappointed when we eat at Nollies, great views seated outside

Yelp
We just discovered Nollie's Taco Joint and we are SOLD! Amazing tacos (and nachos, right hubs??? Spoiler alert- he couldn't finish them). It's rare for us to find a place we both REALLY like, plus has good beverages. And Omigosh-- Prosecco on draft!!!!! And if Jessica is running things downstairs, you'll be in good hands. Already planning what I'm ordering when we come back. Yum Yummily Yummers!

Yelp
Just wanted to follow up on my original review of Nollie's Taco Joint, happy to report it's still just as good as I remembered. We ordered the salsa sampler, jackfruit tacos, and fish tacos this time around. Everything was amazing, fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. The jackfruit tacos especially stood out, and the variety of salsas was a great way to kick things off. Seating is still pretty limited, which is something to keep in mind. It's a first-come, first-served setup, and we ended up grabbing seats at the bar (which actually turned out great). Drinks came out fast, which was a bonus, and the overall vibe remained relaxed and welcoming. This place continues to be a solid go-to if you're looking for great tacos and a laid-back beach-town feel. Just get there early or be ready to hover for a seat, totally it's worth it.

Yelp
Nollie's was our favorite place we ate while visiting Carolina Beach! Starting with our drinks and The Full Monty (their assortment of salsas, queso, and guac) we were already quite happy! The skateboards on the walls & ceiling make for fun viewing from your table. After this, we each did 3 tacos. The sauce that comes on the shrimp & mahi tacos is absolutely delicious! On top of it all, service was quick & friendly! We will definitely be back on any return visits to CB!!

Yelp
Food wasn't bad but not the best I have ever had. Our friends had the asada taco and burrito and the meat was very grisly. The bathroom was very dirty and we didn't like that we had to pay for parking.
google avatar

Charlotte B.

Yelp
Nollies tacos are fantastic! We were so glad we checked this place out. You can basically get chicken, shrimp, asada or mahi as tacos, nachos, or a quesadilla. I opted for tacos and my husband got a quesadilla. We also shared guacamole and chips. The meal was fresh and delicious! Full bar, beer and wine options. The people there are so nice too! The staff were friendly and we met a couple regulars too. Nice older gentleman that's lived in the area for 30 years was especially kind to us. There are seats outside and a bar inside facing out. You can't quite see the beach but you feel that nice ocean breeze and people watch. There are also a few tables inside. We will definitely go back on our next visit!

Yelp
Tacos were really good. Service was fast and friendly. Good drinks and great beach vibe.

Yelp
Feeling hungry, 6 friends and I went in for dinner last night visiting Carolina Beach. We ordered waters for the table as well as other drinks to which we were provided plastic water bottles and cups which I thought was peculiar but I digress. We ordered a scrumptious batch of fresh chips and queso to start, and while the tacos were also delectable, I wouldn't say they were worth the long wait. While I'm not keen on the exact timeframe, it was long enough for my beer to be warm and flat! As upsetting as this was, overall the food was pretty good but there are definitely better tacos (and Mexican food overall) in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
FANTASTIC taco joint!!! The queso is banging! The Mahi tacos are on time. The tofu taco is amazing. The jackfruit is delicious! The atmosphere is dive bar and punk. Music selection was the BEST. Great service! Shoulda taken pics earlier but this was all that was left.
google avatar

Stef L.

Yelp
Service and ambiance were awesome. The whole taco place is skateboard themed. From the name of the restaurant to items on the menu and the skateboards attached to the ceiling, it was such a vibe! Service was great to the point where the staff helped us getting free parking due to some spots not charging during winter months. The food was good but definitely had better tacos! You come here for the chill and affordable ambiance and get to eat some yammi food but it won't be like your authentic hole in the wall taco joint.

Yelp
Great local place with great food and skater laid-back atmosphere. Love the black beans & rice and shrimp tacos.

Taylor W.

Yelp
Very mediocre, Americanized tacos at best. The Mahi taco was pretty good, steak was not good, very chewy and cold. Barely any meat either! Too expensive for what they are, better off going to another restaraunt on the beach.
google avatar

Brandy B.

Yelp
Is there such thing as a "dive" restaurant?! If so - this is that. Very friendly - mom & pop type service. Seating is first come first serve with a lot of take out orders made. Very small inside - decorated with lots of cool skateboards. A million bottles of hot sauce for your sampling (if you dare)! Tacos are delicious! Recommend mahi, shrimp, and asada - hubby loved the chicken too! If you're in the Carolina beach area - stop in here - at least for a snack!
google avatar

Laura D.

Yelp
Fun vibe w the skateboards kept attention of kids while we dined inside. Even better were the extremely fresh ingredients in their tacos: don't miss the shrimp and fish versions. Server was patient and kind. Loved it!

Yelp
Staying on the island for a weekend this place was across the street from my airbnb. So since it's been all over Tik Tok I decided to give it a try - it's a small place decorated with a ton of character. The service wasn't overly friendly, but efficient. Don't order a Margarita, it's premade so it's so sweet (you will get a sugar rush). The tacos were good tho we had shrimp, steak, mahi, pork. The queso was also good, but the chips not so much.

Yelp
First... the food was incredible. Very flavorful. Huge portions. But the waitress got my order wrong twice and never fixed it. She also didn't fix the receipt so we paid more for the food then we should of and she still didn't fix it when I told her. It gets super busy and crowded. We could barely walk inside. No one told us how it worked to get seated and there weren't enough staff members so we definitely felt neglected. The food is expensive. We felt we had better food for our buck at flaming Amy's instead. This place was good but just not worth it to me.

Jazmin P.

Yelp
Went here for my friends birthday, really poor dining experience due to how long it took for every step. Our server, Casey, was snippy from the very beginning specifically noting that our party was too big but still sat us regardless. We also witnessed another worker talk be super rude to another family waiting to get seated as well. My friend had sharp bones in fish tacos that didn't taste fresh. It took her 15 mins to give us our cards back because "the party was so big" and proceeded to drop the stack of cards in our empty food trays.

Amanda S.

Yelp
Casey (the manager) was very rude and inattentive to my group, made a very poor dining experience. There were many bones in our tacos and orders were messed up after waiting two hours. She held our 8 credit cards for over 20 minutes while bartending in front of a crowd. She then threw our tabs to the middle of the table (not passing it to the individuals in our group). Multiple cards fell inside our dirty food and she claims it's because our party of 9 was too big. We had to get up multiple times to speak to the manager over the course of our two hours meal; She claimed she would not go upstairs to check on our food because our party was too large. Do not recommend unless you want to pick at bones for two hours.

Jack N.

Yelp
Pay for parking. Clever surf shack with skater theme inside attracted us. Expectations were nothing high. Dives don't scare us if there's a treasure to be found. Food was nothing memorable. Nachos were as good as I could get at any fast food place. Seafood tacos were ok. There are a handful of other places in the area that were better and served better portions for the price. Saving grace was that the service was good. Unfortunately, I would save yourself the parking fee.

Heather B.

Yelp
Several things were left out of our order and we didn't realize until we got our order home. Husband turned around and went back, they were only mildly apologetic about the items being left out. Besides that, we make better food at home - would not go back again. Prices are way too expensive for subpar food.

Valerie C.

Yelp
I used to love this place, but it has gone downhill. We waited over an hour for food and it wasn't even busy. The food is still pretty good, but, with the poor service/long wait, I don't plan to come back

Nat Z.

Yelp
I work right around the corner! I always get the mahi taco to go. This time I decided to sit down after work and order. Both servers seemed really busy with their cell phones. Waited alittle bit and I finally called someone else over. I got a guacamole and queso with the chips. The chips were super stale and the guacamole tasted like 2 day old package guacamole. You should really make your guacamole from scratch. It'll save you money. My biggest disappointment with my regular mahi taco. It was so salty I couldn't even eat it! I paid $32 dollars for the worst food
google avatar

Scott J.

Yelp
The food here is pretty delicious! The tacos are the best part. We also tried the nachos but wished we had some tacos instead. They also have a few local beers on draft. The worst part is that they don't have free parking.
google avatar

Wanda M.

Yelp
Love this cute little place on the Island! There is only about 4 tables inside and bar stools for maybe 6, but the outdoor patio has several tables, mostly covered with umbrellas! If you are a local and have a CB parking pass, park in the Seawitch parking lot! The big lot next to the restaurant is private and of course more expensive! We started with chips and Pico! It does cost $6, but the Pico is so fresh! They give you a ton of seasoned chips, so we always have to ask for a 2nd Pico, which they haven't ever charged extra! Husband had the Mahi Tacos! We also shared the Steak Asada tacos and the Crossbone chicken tacos! All so fresh, a little spicy, but nothing you can handle with a nice cold beer! BTW, it was Taco Tuesday, which is a $1 off all tacos! Prices are reasonable all the time! There is no liquor license, so don't expect any mixed drinks! But there is wine, sangria! Not sure about weekends during tourist season, but I've always found service to be good! Update- just went again during busy tourist season! Never had the Nachos before! Hot and delicious! Sat outside this time, flies were pretty bad, but again the food is so fresh!

Amy W.

Yelp
The service and food were fantastic! We will definitely be back. We loved the skateboard decor.

Leo J.

Yelp
service was not good and was slow. the food was good but they were very slow and doing upcharges for random things. Waitress also forgot multiple things to bring out.

Yelp
Second time - updated review. Summary - we still like it! This time we had tacos and nachos on a sunny afternoon. I could sing about the tofu tacos - holy moly! I eat a lot of tofu, but I've never had it grilled. It's amazing - the spices they use give it so much flavor. The nachos were also flavorful, and the other one's tacos were delicious. He wanted to go back a couple hours later for more. The jalapeno margaritas were super yummy. Service was great. It's small and crowded, but so are most places around. Sitting outside is delightful. My only complaint was that the food could have been hotter temperature-wise. It was warm enough though. Will go back.

Yelp
Nollie's Taco Joint had huge, flavorful servings! Here's what we had: I had the shrimp nachos, it was full of flavor with black beans, tomatoes, sprinkle cheese & queso cheese! I was most excited that it had at least 10 shrimps (the most Ive seen in a nacho platter)!!! My boys had the half cheese quesadilla with tortilla chips. They enjoyed their meal also but they were still hungry after eating, I'd recommend a full quesadilla on the menu for these new age "eat everything" kids My husband ordered the Cross Bone chicken burrito and at first sight he thought he wouldn't finish it but he did!!! He said the chicken was well seasoned and he especially loved the fresh jalapeño (He LoveS spicyfood)‼ All in all the the food was fresh and flavorful but the boys entrees were really small, the space is smaller so you may have to wait for a seat or resort to take out if it's a long wait!

Sarah E.

Yelp
The food was amazing, the staff was friendly and the prices were great! If you're in the mood for some delicious and unique tacos this is the place the go. Grilled Mahi tacos were outstanding!!

Games G.

Yelp
Awful experience. Casey, the manager, was incredibly rude and had awful service. Food took over 40 minutes to arrive, and when asked if she could give us an estimate on when the food was arriving, she said "Your party is too big so I can't tell you and I haven't been upstairs." She never offered to check either. The food was subpar at best. All food came room temperature, the fish tacos had bones left in them, and the refried beans came dry and cold. When collecting checks, she took over 20 minutes to give us our cards back. A member of my party went inside to check on what the wait was on our credit cards, which is inappropriate enough to keep customers cards for extended periods of time. She found Casey bartending to others inside and leaving all of our cards unattended. When she came out with all the receipts, she said "It took me 15 minutes to bring your cards back because your party is so BIG." and then she harshly places the stack of cards and receipts into one of our empty food trays, letting a card fall into dirty food. If she couldn't have attended to a party of 9, they shouldn't have sat us and been so rude from the beginning. It took 2 hours for us to get our food, eat, and receive our checks. 0/5 I would never come back here again. Genuinely downloaded Yelp only to write this review.

Susan F.

Yelp
Looks like a beach dive bar, but WOW, the food is terrific! Fresh with inspired ingredients. The service was excellent as well, and the Margarita did not disappoint. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Guess we must have been there on an off night because we were not impressed at all. They said sit wherever, only table open was outside under an air conditioner and I kept getting dripped on so I had to keep inching closer and closer to my mom who was seated next to me. Ordered a spicy margarita which was not spicy at all. They just put some spices around the rim and a couple jalapeño slices in it. Pretty bland flavor, nothing special, especially not for the price. Waited a very long time to get our food. It looked like only 2 people were working and it was busy so I understand, but everyone's food arrived COLD. We didn't want to send it back and have to wait even longer because we were all hungry. My mom didn't like her Powerslide Pork tacos. I tried a bite and had to agree, they were not good. The flavor was terrible. My dad liked the Method Mahi salad but he said his food arrived cold too. The only redeeming factor of this place was the awesome punk playlist we got to listen to while we waited. Waitress was also very sweet and pleasant. We had high hopes for this place based on the reviews and the outside looked cool, but unfortunately I don't think we will return here.

Alyssa C.

Yelp
Everything we had was great! The shrimp taco was my favorite because the shrimp were seasoned very well but not too much. They also have several hot sauce options if you like your taco to have a little heat. The guacamole and the spicy salsa was our two favorite dips. The chips have a little seasoning which are my favorite kind. To drink I had the damn right with the watermelon lager. This was the best beer cocktail I ever had. It was refreshing especially for a warm evening. Our service was good and the patio is great to eat and people watch from. This will definitely be on my list as a place to eat at when at Carolina beach. The tacos were too good to pause for pictures but the dip sampler is great for a group and to try all the options!

Edward S.

Yelp
Dismal service nobody gives a flying f---.Such a shame as the food is really good if and when you get it.
google avatar

Keith B.

Yelp
Best tacos in the state of North Carolina! Get the Pesky, you won't regret it! On top of it being the best tacos around the owner is one of the most genuine people I have ever met in my lifetime. He treats his employees like gold, he is involved in his community. Always willing to help others and is someone I will always admire. Amd strive to be like. The restaurant is one of the coolest places you will ever visit! Make sure you also order a "Damn Right"
google avatar

Jeremy L.

Yelp
Great menu, great location, and amazing service. We love the vibe at Nollies, one of the best spots on the island.
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
Really great service from walk in to exit! The chow was meh - especially considering the cost..Oofdah. I'm not sure how these guys can charge this much for a taco or burrito...especially those that taste so so bland. Not my first burrito or taco so my comparison is deep.
google avatar

Valerie D.

Yelp
Didn't like the food nor the atmosphere. We Sat outside and the flies were awful. Service was just ok. I would not go back, the rice had absolutely no flavor, their salsa was bland.
google avatar

Sea B.

Yelp
Shrimp tacos are the best option....very unique "skateboarder" decor. Parking is a bit of a pain, but if your on the beach it is a great option.
google avatar

Kyle D.

Yelp
This review is for carry out. We ordered 4 salads and a quesadilla! It felt expensive when we paid for it all however you get a lot of food and a good amount of the protein you select. Ordering was easy and quick! I highly suggest the Carne Asada salad or the shrimp! The tortilla bowl with the salad is really good!
google avatar

Shawn K.

Yelp
This is not Taco Bell!!! If your looking for that you will be disappointed. This jewel was plucked from the California Coast of an empty swimming pool and plopped right down in Carolina Beach. A Skateboarders paradise, the taco place is small and quaint and is first come first serve and they have tables outside but better hurry because the locals know about this as much as the tourists. Mahi taco outstanding. The sampler a must for flavors presented from start to finish with a spicy Queso the is so good you can't stop. My kids raved about the Mahi Nachos but the star is definitely the Mahi Mahi. The menu is unique and adventurous with a touch of exactly what you were looking for from a "Taco Joint". Recommend- Oh Yeah!!!!
google avatar

Brian E.

Yelp
We happened upon this spot when visiting Carolina Beach, and it's pretty great. We had a few different tacos, mahi mahi, chicken, carne asada, taco salad, and nachos...you're probably thinking that it seems like a lot of food. It is, but it's because we liked it so much we went back again two days later. Everything we had was really great. The tacos, nachos, and the server was friendly. Also, our dog enjoyed the "dog" chicken tacos (plain chicken taco). Several outdoor tables, a few inside with I think a bar. I highly recommend it. Fairly inexpensive, and fresh ingredients. If we're ever back in Carolina beach, we'll definitely stop in again.
google avatar

Singi D.

Yelp
Great little find, few outdoor tables & a cozy vibe. Our server was nice. It's a small shop, so be patient they are on island time. Great beer selection. Walking distance from the beach & public parking and our airbnb. So all around awesome. Very cute spot, highly recommend!

Yelp
We came in the off season on a Saturday and was able to get a table immediately. Overall our visit was pretty good, my husband enjoyed it much more than I did. I will call these annoyances- 1) Our table and chairs wobbled so bad out on the deck 2) We weren't "allowed" to order because a table had sat down before us even though we knew what we wanted and were ready. They were a larger party so we had to wait about 10 minutes for them to order first and just thought that was odd. 3) I didn't time it but the wait for the food was definitely excessive for not a busy night 4) The menu says burritos are "served with" rice and beans. I thought this would mean they are on the side. Maybe that is my fault for not interpreting it correctly. We ordered tacos, nachos, and a burrito. Pork tacos were great, nachos are super tasty but end up being a lot of really soggy chips halfway through. We ordered the asada nachos and felt the steak wasn't chopped enough, we had huge chunks that were hard to eat and not bite size. Grilled Mahi Burrito was on the blander side for us and ate really mushy- we would change up to the fried mahi next time. I think we would come back but order different items.
google avatar

Nora E.

Yelp
This place is awesome!! Great food, great service (shoutout to Cherise!!) & great live music (shoutout to Isaac!) Got the Airwalk Asada salad with rancho dressing and it was delicious! I ate it too quickly to take a pic, so enjoy this dog pic (taken on the patio) instead
google avatar

Brooke M.

Yelp
Such a fun taco joint. Service was great, food was excellent. Highly recommend the full Monty to try all the tasty dips. The mahi taco was so flavorful and fresh. The asada taco was delicious as well. Taco Tuesday is $2.00 off but expect a little wait, enjoy the dips or a cold beer while you wait.

Yelp
Nollies is a super hip taco, burrito and salad joint located just feet away from the Carolina Beach Boardwalk. The look, the vibe and location get 5 stars from me. Parking, staff and portion sizes get 4 stars. And the quality of food and pricing gets barely 3 stars, unfortunately. I really value quality burritos! I will pay $15 for some dank, saucy, meat filled goodness. But if you're charging me anywhere over $8 for an average burrito with 2-4 pieces of meat, over compensated with flavorless rice, and sauce just sitting, waiting for me at the bottom, you're just not worth it to me. I ordered the shrimp burrito and literally had 3 pieces of shrimp in it which was really sad. It would have been a great burrito is the sauce was spread out, there was plenty of shrimp and way less rice, but I would not order again, as is. I love the decor here - skateboards and stickers all over, all the Southern California vibes. The wait time was average. There was tons of seating on the outside and front decks with beach views. They have their own restroom in the back. The staff knew great suggestions in the area. And walking right across the street to the beach, post burrito, was lovely. It's a cool spot and I'd come back for the location but wouldn't write home about the burritos.

Yelp
Great food, quick service, cute outdoor seating. Mahi tacos were great and all the chips and dips. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
Food- shrimp tacos was just awful Service was rude and absent Sodas you pay for by the soda Overpriced Very tiny place with mostly outdoor seating.
