Isla Holbox, Mexico, Travel Guide

"This eco-friendly boutique hotel surprises from the moment you arrive: several guest rooms are breathtaking tree houses that resemble bird nests high above the sand, and many wellness experiences—ranging from yoga to sound baths and traditional Mayan healing ceremonies—are complimentary for guests. The property also houses La Popular, a seafood-focused grill offering toes-in-the-sand dining. Laura Samper, a wellness coordinator, notes that "Holbox is part of a natural reserve, known as the Yum Balam, which translates to 'lord or king jaguar,' and welcomes various bird species year-round," highlighting the property's connection to the surrounding natural reserve." - Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila is a bilingual travel writer, editor, and content marketer. Nomade Holbox (Isla Holbox, Riviera Maya) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"A tourism boom has changed Isla Holbox in recent years, bringing an influx of international visitors to the once-sleepy island just north of the Yucatán Peninsula. It’s still a tropical paradise — blissfully car-free and part of Mexico's largest nature reserve, which is famously a sanctuary for the world’s largest fish — but it’s harder these days to find peace and quiet on the sand. Enter Nomade Holbox, a luxurious and eco-conscious adults-only retreat that’s a 15-minute golf-cart ride from the ferry terminal, pleasantly removed from the busier parts of the island and set right on a secluded beach." - Tablet Hotels

Depending on what you expect you will have a different experience. We loved the hotel. The rooms were very comfortable and pretty decorated. The outdoor shower and bathtub were awesome. And the service we got was impeccable. We were regularly visited by a lizard which was a nice surprise. If you are not into nature or can't handle animals Nomade will also be nothing for you. We also enjoyed the restaurant and food they served. Prices are a bit high for Mexico but about equivalent to similar restaurants and "fair". They tell you before that there is a service charge so all pretty transparent. Would come again.

This is the most incredible hotel I have ever stayed at. From the scenery, the staff, the rooms, the food, to the wellness programming, my husband and my expectations were exceeded! We were so sad to leave. It was really magical! I highly recommend the beach front suites. The place is incredible for couples and close friends :)

Nômade Temple Holbox was more magical that I anticipated. I was looking for a rejuvenating trip by myself after a big transition in my life and this special hotel fit the bill! I loved sitting in the open dining pavilion and looking out at the sea. The food and drinks were great. It's very chill. The wellness activities were surprisingly good. And the staff were so kind and helpful. Special shout out to Eric, Jedier and Christie. Can't wait to come back!

Such a calming and beautiful hotel. Located on the beach with kind and accommodating staff. I would recommend the oceanfront room where you can step outside and just enjoy the beach or lounge on your deck. There is an outdoor bathtub which was a very nice touch.

If you are looking for a tranquil island getaway with a focus on wellness, delicious food, and connection to nature - Nomade Holbox is it. Every staff member we encountered was incredibly kind and accommodating which amplified the peaceful nature of our stay. Laura, the wellness coordinator, was able to assist us in sessions that would be beneficial based on our needs once we arrived. All of the sessions we participated in were well-crafted and soothing. The food and drink program at the restaurant was delicious. Thanks to the staff we will be adding Carajillos to our rotation! We stayed in a beach treehouse and loved the outdoor shower, door/window screens to keep the bugs out while listening to the ocean, and roof deck daybed for star gazing. The design of the architecture and grounds were very aesthetic and peaceful. The hotel was well-maintained and the staff did the best they could to create a peaceful, mosquito-free environment. On that note, it is important to remember that staying at Nomade is very much an outdoor experience which I think their website is very clear about. We were looking forward to this aspect and it was rejuvenating. Based on other reviews it is important to understand this and manage your expectations. The integrated transportation service was super smooth and helped ease us in and out of vacation in a calm manner. Thank you so much to the whole Nomade Holbox staff!! We will see you again.

We loved our time at Nomade. Best experience in Mexico to date. Hotel was awesome, food was incredible. Quiet, luxurious experience. Everything you envision when you think of a getaway by the beach.

Try to rip you off by trying to get your credit card details beforehand although I booked via booking.com. The didn’t even accept the AMEX credit card used to make the booking and tried to get a different one because of the fees. In my opinion, they are after quick cash months in advance of your stay, instead of letting you pay upon checkout like in any other decent hotel globally. After asking whether it’s possible to do exactly that (pay when checking out, not half a year before you even check in), they sent an unfriendly four-line email and then canceled my booking. If you want your card details safe, treated professionally and pay AFTER your stay upon checkout, not half a year in advance, avoid this place at all costs.

Historically, I have only written positive reviews as a personal ethos. *This is the first negative review I have ever provided on google. I experienced a situation in January 2025 that I continue to work to resolve with this hotel and my credit card company. I enjoyed a lovely tea and wellness shots at their restaurant. However, rather than being charged in pesos, Nomade charged my credit card in dollars- $275 (to be exact for a pot of tea and two wellness shots). I signed the credit card receipt believing it was in pesos(not dollars) and Nomade refused to refund the difference. Disintegrity is a formula for mistrust; negative reviews and lack of return business. As a business owner myself- this model will allow for transient short-term gains however out of alignment with building trust to gain return customers and long-term sustainable growth. Unless, this can be resolved in a more wholesome way- I do not recommend Nomade Holbox given their dishonest financial practices. If you are visiting this hotel or restaurant be very, very mindful of your charges.
