New Zealand Road Trip Itinerary: 2-4 Weeks (Updated 2025)

"I liked Nomads Queenstown for its balconies on most rooms, excellent water pressure in the showers, thick pillows, nightly activities, and the free Sunday dinner and quiz night — overall a great social hostel in Queenstown." - Matthew Kepnes

The 7 Best Hostels in New Zealand (2025 Edition)

"I found this to be one of the most amazing hostels I’ve ever stayed at: most rooms have balconies, the showers have prodigious water pressure, and the pillows are thick (the manager told me they change them every few months to keep them fluffy). What really sets it apart is the HUGE kitchen and common area, with activities every night (including a cheap pub crawl around Queenstown) and a free dinner and quiz night on Sunday — not one traveler I spoke to wanted to leave." - Matthew Kepnes

The 17 Best Hostels in the World in 2025 | Nomadic Matt

"When it was new in 2009 it blew my mind: a huge, restaurant-sized kitchen, top-notch showers with great water pressure, a large lounge, and most rooms with balconies. I noticed thoughtful touches like thick pillows that the manager told me they replace every few months, and because the hostel doesn’t have a bar people drink and socialize on-site; there are nightly activities and a free Sunday dinner and quiz night, which kept the social atmosphere alive." - Matthew Kepnes

Great location, nice staff and clean room service. The facilities are quite old, not that solid bed, the sockets are quite away from your bed, the lockers are mini and some of them are broken. But the toilet and bathroom are separate, which is useful in busy time. It is kind of noisy but my ear plugs works. This is not a problem for me. So it could be a good choice if location is important for you.

The room is spacious, door is digital lock via apps, aircond no remote, you must use the apps to contact reception for turning it on/off, kind of weird, the car parking is a huge headache for me this town. I must find free parking with 5min+ walking distance, take note if you are driving. Water dispenser available at lobby. You will hear some music from the Bar on Saturday night, I didn’t hear it Sunday night. But the room have smoke smell come from nowhere.

We stayed in a double bed room with Mountain View & a shared balcony! We absolutely loved it. We had our own bathroom & a small fridge! Everything was super clean & the staff was super friendly and helpful🙌🏼 On the other side or the hostel is a bar, sometimes you can hear the bar in the evening but Queenstown is a city so that’s what you can expect - didn’t bother us at all! Thank you for the amazing stay! Elisa!

I am not one to usually write reviews but this hostel experience surely made me write one. Upon walking into the lobby you are met with couches that have holes in them and music so loud that you can barely hear the person at reception. After getting my keys I walked into my room where the lockers are so small they can only fit a laptop and not to mention they are all completely unusable. Every single one was broken and falling off the hinges. The best part is half of them didn’t even have a lock latch on them. The room was filthy, the bed feels like sleeping on a springs, the shower head was exploding water, the curtain was completely off the hinges so in the morning you were immediately woken up to light. There were also strange stains all over the walls and curtains. Lastly as far as the room goes, the outlets are across the bed so you can’t use the outlets in bed. As far as facilities go everything is worn out and old. I was really excited to use the sauna but it’s been broken for ages and they decide to use the excuse that they are waiting for a part from Australia which isn’t far at all. I was supposed to spend 5 nights here and only lasted one. Upon complaining to reception I was only refunded for the other three nights because it was “too late” to be refunded for the other three even though it was only 45 minutes past checkout. As someone who’s worked in hotels, good customer service would have refunded for the four nights I didn’t stay there. whatever you do save yourself some piece of mind and don’t stay here

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Had a great stay at Nomad Backpackers. Big thanks to Lucy and Emily — both were super friendly, welcoming, and really helpful during my stay. They made everything easy and created a relaxed, positive vibe around the place. Awesome staff, well-run hostel, and I’d definitely stay again. Highly recommend.

Google
Really nice hostel with decent rooms. The kitchen was a bit small, as seems common with Nomad hostels but it had a great social space and many added facilities. Its location was fantastic, with The World Bar just opposite. Would definitely recommend if staying in Queenstown.

Preface this with staff at check in were nice and maybe I missed the memo with this hostel however I wouldn’t recommend this if you want to sleep before a Milford sound day trip or a day of hiking. The room was insanely loud with the bar right outside- I’ve stayed at nomads in Aus a few times and noise has never been an issue but this was incredible I don’t mean a bit of bass I mean you literally were in the club untill 4am. If you’re a party person then great but if you want a more restful and productive experience I don’t recommend it at all I didn’t sleep all night and honestly this is the first time I’m dreading the rest of my stay. It does the job don’t get me wrong. Bit dated, no curtains or sockets near to the bed, broken aircon, broken lockers, bit grimey, the kitchen is chaos but I guess the location is what makes it ? Seems like it’s probably the best backpackers option for being social and getting drunk but for any actual rest before sight seeing it’s a bit of a nightmare. I think there should be a noise notice because I probably wouldn’t have booked here if I had realised I was going to be inside a nightclub for three nights straight. For reference every other nomads has been a great stay which is why I’m a bit surprised by the level of noise at this location.

I loved my stay at Nomads Queenstown. It was central to everything I needed and bonus of having a spectacular view from my dorm. I stayed in a female 4 dorm room which has a separate bathroom and toilet. There are bars in the laneway downstairs that have extremely LOUD music until 3 am which I was warned about prior to arrival. You will need ear plugs. !!!! The kitchen setup is large with plenty of room, heaps of fridge space and shelves or hooks for dry foods. Staff are all lovely and very helpful with their own travel stories to share. I stayed here for the Queenstown Marathon and it was perfect. Thanks to everyone. 🎉🥰🌻💐🤩

Yelp
This is a review for their private room with private en suite bathroom (this is not a review for the shared hostel backpacker part of the accommodations that are also available from Nomads here). I would recommend staying here, if you're looking for a budget accommodation that's private, safe, central and clean. It gets loud on the streets, even in low tourist season, because the bars go on all night, so bring a pair of ear plugs. The king bed is comfy, there's heat and everything is adequate for what I needed in town. Staff at the front desk is almost available, knowledgable, effective and friendly. I would stay here again. Note that this is by far not a luxury hotel (it's somehow categorized as a five star hotel on Expedia).

Yelp
Excellent location and friendly staff . Kitchen was clean and nice common area. Rooms comfy. Activities director Jenica was terrific. Great time frisbee golf and hike to Queenstown hill. She has a nice friendly personality. I would highly recommend this hostel.

Yelp
I usually try to stay away from hostels if at all possible. However, Nomads is one of a kind. Minus the yelling of our neighbors at 3am (not the hostel's fault), we had a very pleasant stay. We were able to get a bright and spacious private room with a balcony and a beautiful view of the lake. The bed was quite comfortable and the facilities were very clean. We did not eat at the hostel (although I think breakfast is included?). It's in a great location, as you are right in the town center and it's just a less than 5 minute walk to the lake. Parking can be a bit of a nightmare, but there is an underground parking garage down the street. This place would've scored a 5 except for a few things: 1. You have to call the front desk to adjust your room temperature - which isn't a huge problem, but it's just strange. We called a few times, and they only adjusted our temperature minimally each time. It took a few tries, but it eventually got to a comfortable temperature (we were there in the winter time, so it was quite chilly). 2. Customer service was inconsistent. Upon checking in, one of the guys at the front desk gave us some attitude because you are supposed to tag your keycard to get in and out of the hostel after certain hours in the evening. Since we JUST arrived, we clearly don't have our keycards yet, so he had to buzz us in. He apologized after he realized that we were checking in, but still, it's not great service. Other times, like when we were asking about what to do and where to go, we experienced wonderful service. So again, inconsistent. Overall, I was quite happy with our stay here. The rooms are clean and comfortable, nice view, and great location. Definitely recommended!

Yelp
I'm too old to stay in hostels anymore, so naturally, I was reluctant to book a room here. However, when I saw they have private rooms (with private bathrooms), I decided to look further. Turns out, they have the best ever rates for a room in downtown Queenstown (~$120 NZ). Positives: the private rooms are a bit small, but they're modern and updated. Each room comes with a patio that you share with your neighbors in the next room, and low and behold, the views are very appealing from any angle! The staff is friendly and accommodating. They've got laundry, lounge, free dinner and breakfast (dorm quality, mind you, but you can't argue with the price). Minuscule complaints: it seems odd talking about a bathroom sink, but theirs is extremely small. Not a big deal until you try and brush your teeth, and accidentally end up spitting on the floor. Other thing, you need to shower with the bathroom door closed and they have signs explicitly telling you so - apparently their smoke alarm is so insanely sensitive that it's bound to go off - no doubt to keep the bunk room kids in line on the second floor. I wasn't losing sleep over any of this, mind you. Other notes: street parking (free from 6pm-8am), garage parking next door for $10. Lastly, some bars are directly below, so the place can get noisy at night. Overall, I'd recommend if you feel you must stay in Queenstown.

Yelp
This hostel was packed with young adults. Very hipster and in. Highly recommend staying here if you want a good time. They have free dinner every night and great opportunities and deals for around the town. I loved staying here. Wish I had another pillow though but it was alright.

Yelp
Been here for a few hours and already love it! The staff are amazing and helpful! You get free dinners!! The place is clean and lots of fun. The atmosphere is super welcoming. Totally an awesome place for first timers in Queenstown that want to have fun and explore!
