New Zealand Road Trip Itinerary: 2-4 Weeks (Updated 2025)

"I liked Nomads Queenstown for its balconies on most rooms, excellent water pressure in the showers, thick pillows, nightly activities, and the free Sunday dinner and quiz night — overall a great social hostel in Queenstown." - Matthew Kepnes

The 7 Best Hostels in New Zealand (2025 Edition)

"I found this to be one of the most amazing hostels I’ve ever stayed at: most rooms have balconies, the showers have prodigious water pressure, and the pillows are thick (the manager told me they change them every few months to keep them fluffy). What really sets it apart is the HUGE kitchen and common area, with activities every night (including a cheap pub crawl around Queenstown) and a free dinner and quiz night on Sunday — not one traveler I spoke to wanted to leave." - Matthew Kepnes

The 17 Best Hostels in the World in 2025 | Nomadic Matt

"When it was new in 2009 it blew my mind: a huge, restaurant-sized kitchen, top-notch showers with great water pressure, a large lounge, and most rooms with balconies. I noticed thoughtful touches like thick pillows that the manager told me they replace every few months, and because the hostel doesn’t have a bar people drink and socialize on-site; there are nightly activities and a free Sunday dinner and quiz night, which kept the social atmosphere alive." - Matthew Kepnes

We stayed in a double bed room with Mountain View & a shared balcony! We absolutely loved it. We had our own bathroom & a small fridge! Everything was super clean & the staff was super friendly and helpful🙌🏼 On the other side or the hostel is a bar, sometimes you can hear the bar in the evening but Queenstown is a city so that’s what you can expect - didn’t bother us at all! Thank you for the amazing stay! Elisa!

This is the first time I have given a bad review to a youth hostel on Google Maps. First of all, the bar next door was so noisy from night to morning, and it was so loud that I could hardly fall asleep. Secondly, why don't you number the beds? Every guest who checked in found a bed by himself, and your cleaning staff even cleaned my bed. When I came back at night, I was surprised to see a person lying in the bed where I had slept for a week? I didn't put too many things on the bed. I'm sure my towels were lost by your people. I don't know if there are any other things left by you, which makes me very annoyed. In addition, there is no socket at your bedside. If you want to charge your mobile phone, you have to squat at the door of the room. This is the most outrageous youth hostel I have ever stayed in.

Google
Wonderful hostel to stay at! Amazing service from the front desk girls, Rachael and Ellen. Great communal areas that everyone can share. Bathrooms are super clean and have lots of cubicles. Highly recommend as it is super close to everything, it’s walking distance from all the food places and shops and activities too!

I came back past 11pm and the sliding door was locked and I knock the door they refuse to open as they mention only can be opened via app, which came as surprise for me I wasn't aware of the app thingy, neither during my check in, I wasn't advise by the staff to compulsory download the app. even in slip given it was no link or QR code of the app. The guy who refuse to give me his name was extremely rude, he just make me wait outside, with 2 other staff standing at the corner and after my 3rd knock, one of the staff came and unlock the door. I said I genuinely didn't know about the app. look it can be any reason, staff who makes the customer wait outside in that cold night, I mean he is working on a computer he can either get his staff to just open the door for me or he himself can unlock it, his reason was no button to unlock the door from the frontdesk, here comes the funny part, from a place that high tech using the app to access pretty much everything, don't have a simple button to unlock the main door from their front desk. I took a private room and it's not exactly cheap for this kind of place. I came back to receptionist and ask may I get your name and he refuse to give. I said its for my feedback to management, he refuse it as well. Customer service is just mind blowing, what a guy and what a crew. absolutely disgusting. also Sauna is not in service.

Google
Good location, but wouldn’t waste your money on a female only room. the female rooms are at the back of the hostel, which looks on to clubs that blast music until 4am. I asked about moving but there wasn’t really an alternative due to the lay out of the rooms. Just poor planning on whoever owns the building; if you’re paying more for a female only en-suite dorm then you’re sort of paying a premium to have poor sleep.

Ok hostel, good location, good size clean kitchen. Our room was very prison cell like with only a tiny window. Staff weren’t super helpful- we were travelling in a group but booked separately and they weren’t open to trying to see if we could all go in the same room. Bathrooms stunk the whole time we were there.

Google
Personally I wouldn’t pick this accommodation again. Good thing of this hostel is its location, as it’s only a minute away from the city centre, restaurants, shops, etc. The hotel staff was also nice. I think it is perfect for young adults in their early twenties who may be travelling alone and want to meet new people, or for “party people” groups. In my case however I was looking for a rather comfortable and quiet place, and this was neither. The hostel is packed with people, the kitchen is too small to host everyone at peak hours and the shared dorms are rather messy as there is not enough room for everyone’s belongings. No hangers or wardrobes available, no benches or chairs to stack things, so everything ends up on the floor. It just feels overwhelmingly crowded. I stayed here with my Dad (in his 60s) and it was definitely not the atmosphere we were looking for. The night clubs are also just around the corner, so ear plugs are definitely needed if you’re a light sleeper. Overall I think there are nicer places to stay in the same area which would offer a more comfortable experience.

Google
Staff seem nice and welcoming, but what's wrong with a simple keycar to enter the hostel/ room? I don't want to download and register with some app for one nights stay. What an absurd system. The fan in the bathroom was very loud and no switch to turn it off. Room itself was freezing (room 330). And before you say I should've spoken to reception about making it warmer, how about you instruct reception to set a room temp to a warm setting when the room is being occupied. Cheers.

Yelp
This is a review for their private room with private en suite bathroom (this is not a review for the shared hostel backpacker part of the accommodations that are also available from Nomads here). I would recommend staying here, if you're looking for a budget accommodation that's private, safe, central and clean. It gets loud on the streets, even in low tourist season, because the bars go on all night, so bring a pair of ear plugs. The king bed is comfy, there's heat and everything is adequate for what I needed in town. Staff at the front desk is almost available, knowledgable, effective and friendly. I would stay here again. Note that this is by far not a luxury hotel (it's somehow categorized as a five star hotel on Expedia).

Yelp
Excellent location and friendly staff . Kitchen was clean and nice common area. Rooms comfy. Activities director Jenica was terrific. Great time frisbee golf and hike to Queenstown hill. She has a nice friendly personality. I would highly recommend this hostel.

Yelp
I usually try to stay away from hostels if at all possible. However, Nomads is one of a kind. Minus the yelling of our neighbors at 3am (not the hostel's fault), we had a very pleasant stay. We were able to get a bright and spacious private room with a balcony and a beautiful view of the lake. The bed was quite comfortable and the facilities were very clean. We did not eat at the hostel (although I think breakfast is included?). It's in a great location, as you are right in the town center and it's just a less than 5 minute walk to the lake. Parking can be a bit of a nightmare, but there is an underground parking garage down the street. This place would've scored a 5 except for a few things: 1. You have to call the front desk to adjust your room temperature - which isn't a huge problem, but it's just strange. We called a few times, and they only adjusted our temperature minimally each time. It took a few tries, but it eventually got to a comfortable temperature (we were there in the winter time, so it was quite chilly). 2. Customer service was inconsistent. Upon checking in, one of the guys at the front desk gave us some attitude because you are supposed to tag your keycard to get in and out of the hostel after certain hours in the evening. Since we JUST arrived, we clearly don't have our keycards yet, so he had to buzz us in. He apologized after he realized that we were checking in, but still, it's not great service. Other times, like when we were asking about what to do and where to go, we experienced wonderful service. So again, inconsistent. Overall, I was quite happy with our stay here. The rooms are clean and comfortable, nice view, and great location. Definitely recommended!

Yelp
I'm too old to stay in hostels anymore, so naturally, I was reluctant to book a room here. However, when I saw they have private rooms (with private bathrooms), I decided to look further. Turns out, they have the best ever rates for a room in downtown Queenstown (~$120 NZ). Positives: the private rooms are a bit small, but they're modern and updated. Each room comes with a patio that you share with your neighbors in the next room, and low and behold, the views are very appealing from any angle! The staff is friendly and accommodating. They've got laundry, lounge, free dinner and breakfast (dorm quality, mind you, but you can't argue with the price). Minuscule complaints: it seems odd talking about a bathroom sink, but theirs is extremely small. Not a big deal until you try and brush your teeth, and accidentally end up spitting on the floor. Other thing, you need to shower with the bathroom door closed and they have signs explicitly telling you so - apparently their smoke alarm is so insanely sensitive that it's bound to go off - no doubt to keep the bunk room kids in line on the second floor. I wasn't losing sleep over any of this, mind you. Other notes: street parking (free from 6pm-8am), garage parking next door for $10. Lastly, some bars are directly below, so the place can get noisy at night. Overall, I'd recommend if you feel you must stay in Queenstown.

Yelp
This hostel was packed with young adults. Very hipster and in. Highly recommend staying here if you want a good time. They have free dinner every night and great opportunities and deals for around the town. I loved staying here. Wish I had another pillow though but it was alright.
