Behind the Scenes of ‘Top Chef’ Season 22’s Restaurant Wars | Eater

"Presented as a temporary “granny chic” Mexican‑Italian concept behind a pink wall for the same Restaurant Wars service, this pop-up offered a similarly mixed but compelling experience: diners reported enjoying the food (especially desserts) while feeling constrained by the odd logistics and limited context of a TV challenge. With little public detail beyond its playful concept, the team ultimately left guests and fellow media with the same measured takeaway as the opposing team — competent execution and enjoyable moments, but not necessarily definitive, restaurant‑level greatness." - Bettina Makalintal

I am still stunned, this meal was stellar and so memorable. From top to bottom! The ambiance is so comforting. The bread was like a cloud with a perfect salting and slight crunch. The presentation of the dipping oil/vinegar was pretty, delicious and fun to play with. Now this pasta.... let me tell you... phenomenal!!! I ordered the ravioli d'anatra because I love duck and this blew me AWAY. The taste of the savory and salty of the duck melting into the tangy sweet of the pear and port wine reduction was something I could've never expected. Plus, the ravioli squares were browned hard and perfect and topped with a succulent dollop of truffle butter. The sweet port wine reduction elevated the savoriness of the pasta and really went well with the crunch at the end, which rounded out the bite. 20/10!! My cocktail was also delicious and perfectly balanced! Genuinely can't wait to come back here.

Google
Perfect dining experience. We were looking for a nice place that wasn’t super upscale, but still nice enough to dress for. Interior: perfect for a date night! Food: 10/10 Service: exceptional, we came in kinda late but our server (Zuleyka) was so kind and didn’t rush us one bit. We loved it here, adding this to our favorites!

Google
Excellent place. From the time we walked in the door until leaving the service was amazing. Our waitress was attentive, offered recommendations from menu, etc. the food quality, presentation, and taste was amazing. Would highly recommend this establishment.

Google
The restaurant is very pretty and the staff was polite, the only issue i had was the meal. I ordered the squid ink fettuccine with mixed seafood, and my calamari was cold. I think they use frozen seafood which was a bit disappointing. You would think being surrounded by the ocean they would use fresh seafood. The selections on the menu are very much targeted for adults, I wouldn't bring kids into this restaurant. They dont have basic Italian food for those who like a more traditional meal such as spaghetti bolognese, or just meatballs. Definitely review the menu online before visiting. And its also freezing cold in there. I would try a different Italian restaurant next time.

After a frustrating experience at a nearby restaurant where we left without even eating, we decided to give Nonna’s a try just a few blocks away, and the difference was truly remarkable. From the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed and cared for. In under 45 minutes, we had ordered, received our food, and enjoyed a full, satisfying dinner. The real highlight, however, was our server. She was working alone, managing at least seven or eight tables, and yet we never once felt neglected or rushed. Her professionalism, attentiveness, and calm demeanor under pressure were genuinely impressive. She anticipated our needs, checked in at just the right moments, and maintained a warm, friendly attitude throughout the meal. Nonnas not only saved our night — it completely turned it around. Great food, exceptional service, and a team that clearly takes pride in what they do. We’ll absolutely be back.

No son you are not in Italy. Homemade pasta. Excellent quality and great service. I recommend making a reservation. While on vacation we ate here twice. I had the mushroom ravioli and the gnocchi. I would go again if I was not going home.

This was the last dinner my husband and I had during our trip here in Puerto Rico! It was phenomenal! We both could not say enough how much we loved everything we got! We started with the Arancini Alla Siciliana which was so savory and yummy! He got the lasagna that came fresh out of the oven and was delicious! I got the Gnocchi di Ricotta it was incredible! Highly recommend. With a reservation we walked right in.

Google
We went as a large group. 3 out of 10 were not satisfied with their meal. The menu is very limited to begin with. Then the night we went they didnt have pizza, which already 35% of the menu. We wound up with various pasta dishes and the sauces were all off. I will cough it up to maybe the chef had a bad day. I may go back one more time because I hate to give a poor review. I alwaya give 2 attempts so will go when I can try the pizza. Hoping it gets better.

Yelp
Incredible food and even more incredible service from Jan. Definitely a hidden gem that we found on by accident - will be a regular going forward!

Matt S.

Yelp
Easily the best meal we had in PR - restaurant is located in a quieter neighborhood with a rustic interior. Handmade pasta was delicious and the drinks were creative and refreshing. Cheaper than most places closer to the beach and WAY better.....highly recommend!

Yelp
It's been almost 6 years since I ate here and I will rate them 5 stars again. I am going to first recommend you don't come here for the pizza, not that it's not delicious, but you are wasting your time with a pedestrian kind of food when they have sooo much more to offer. Started out with the Carpaccio. Delicious. Delicious. Their take on a Carbonara is exceptional. The squid ink fettuccini in a seafood sauce is divine. My friends loved it and i plan to be back again soon.

Yelp
Several weeks ago I walked in and stood at the door for about 4 minutes while the only waiter prepares something at the bar ignoring y presence. Then went to a table and stood by chatting with clients for a very long time not even acknowledging my presence. After a long wait he finally came to me and asked "Que usted quiere?" (what do you want?). I walked out.

Yelp
We had an overall great experience here! The food was excellent. The complimentary bread was so soft and tasty. Definitely order the arancini. The amatriciana pasta was also a favorite. We also got the short rib and saffron risotto which is not pictured, but was also delicious. Ambiance was lovely, service was great. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Without reservation, Nonna Cucina Rustica is on par with or better than the best traditional Italian restaurants of NYC. Every dish we have enjoyed across several years has been expertly prepared and delicious. The wine list is simple, but it offers a number of well-made, popularly priced Italian wines. Service is consistently professional, attentive, knowledgeable and helpful, providing enticing descriptions of dishes and recommendations. My only disappointment is that we visit PR only once each year so we cannot dine here more often. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Yelp
Nonna Cucina Rustica is a restaurant you can't miss while in San Juan. We made a reservation, and our table was ready when promised. The restaurant wasn't super busy but definitely had its clientele. Our server, which name escapes me now, was The Best. She was personable, attentive, funny, and very efficient. The menu has lots of great choices, even for those who are picky eaters. As soon as we were seated, complimentary bread (Focaccia) arrived along with some olive oil. The wine list is concise but good, and prices were not crazy. Very affordable. We ordered the burrata salad and the arugula salad as appetizers. They were both fresh and delicious. Main dishes: - Robalo (sea bass) was the fish special. - Tagliolini - Squid ink risotto (with seafood) - Lamb Lasagna (so good). Also, a special. Everything was DELICIOUS. I couldn't pick a bad thing about any of those dishes. I can't stress enough how good the food here was. Seasoning was on point. Great first night in P.R. thanks to Nonna Cucina rustica and the staff. PS: The ambiance in the restaurant is very welcoming, dimmed lighting, and has a homey kind of a feel to it.

Juan L.

Yelp
What an experience..! The pasta (ravioli di ricotta) was an amazing choice. I would recommend this restaurant every time. José was our waiter and his service was equally excellent. If you're looking for exquisite pasta and great ambiance, Nonna is the place to go.

Yelp
BEST EGGPLANT PARMIGIANA on the island, no doubt! The eggplant is cut super thin, almost resembling Greek phyllo dough. It's the best I've ever had and as a Food Writer who's had that dish MANY times, I can say that Nonna's Cucina Rústica surpasses them ALL. The team at Nonna Cucina Rústica knows culinary excellence. They don't have a huge menu but what they do, they do perfectly!!! This is a top Italian restaurant that's known among the locals- it certainly has its loyal customers, I now consider myself one! What a treat to find an authentic spot with probably the most on-point staff in San Juan! They are helpful, welcoming and not too intrusive. This is a great place for a date or for enjoying a meal with friends you'd like to catch up with! It's quiet enough that you can actually hear each other speak : what a pleasure in this area, where most of the popular places on nearby Calle Loiza are quite loud. Nonna's has a palpable refinement. I had the opportunity to meet the owner one day and it's true - the vibe of a restaurant ALWAYS starts at the top! He could not have been more gracious, it's not surprising that he has a Chef who loves what he does and a team of servers who take great pride in bringing excellence to each customer. It's truly a team effort here! As one might guess from its' name, the interior is designed to resemble a rustic Italian Inn - one with a kitchen that really knows how to wow with flavorful hearty homemade food . Fresh grilled fish is a popular item and a best seller. I'm going to try that on my next visit. But it's the Eggplant Parmesan that has me coming back, time after time. When I'm dining solo, I can simply eat at the bar and know that I'll have a wonderful conversation with whoever is on duty. Nonna's wine list is extensive and top notch, they offer mocktails and other nonalcoholic beverages too. Oh, I almost forgot to mention the most incredible focaccia bread that you'll receive upon seating. It's dreamy and comes with balsamic vinegar and the most fantastic Italian olive oil, you know it's the good stuff straight from Italy when it has a light green color, as it does here. Carbs be damned, allow yourself to dig in! It's unlikely that you'll find focaccia THIS GOOD anywhere because it's not dense nor oily. BRAVO to the Baker! Nonna's comes through with great welcoming vibes, you'll feel like you're at a welcoming Countryside Inn in Italy . Totally charming with a welcoming atmosphere and staff. Cozy and refined. Allow it to totally charm you.

Yelp
Great meal, knowledgeable staff abt Italian cuisine, and every recommendation served us well. Fantastic pasta dishes in a cozy space with enjoyable background music.

Yelp
Again the Best! Had the lamb lasagna and it was spectacular! Our server Jan is so wonderful. She suggested some great wines and they so complimented our meal. I can't say enough about this fabulous restaurant. Truly one if not my favorite in San Juan. Thanks Nonna Cucina Rustica.

Yelp
A great Italian spot in San Juan. Loved the restaurant- it is small and intimate. Not really a private spot as you are sitting very close to other tables, but feels very homey. The food was great. A lot of good selections. I got the special lasagna-it was delicious! Service and wine options were great. We saw multiple people come in for takeout so looks like a solid option for that!
google avatar

Yelp
This place was a hole in the wall as far as location but didn't disappoint for food the gnocchi was amazing the dish was well balanced. My boyfriend had the ravioli and arranchini ball which he loved. I found the taste of the ball a little odd but that's preference. It was also too cold so have a light sweater. Service was amazing and not slow like usual for PR. Will def be returning as we frequent PR.
google avatar

Sarah V.

Yelp
Amazing food!! Amazing Italian food on Calle Loiza. Everyone was very kind and attentive. Highly recomend!! You can taste the quality.
google avatar

Jose H.

Yelp
Nice location, service seemed to be understaffed because we had to ask for water 2-3 times and that is unacceptable for a place like this. The entries were decent and pretty unique like the croquettes filled with some sort of risotto and the eggplant was also a table favorite. The saffron risotto tasted like smoked or burnt and the braised boneless short ribs could have been way better. One out of six plates served was left untouched. That person went for the bread and ice cream across the street. Maybe it was an issue of our poor choice, but for us this was our debut and our farewell.
google avatar

Dang N.

Yelp
3.5 stars. This is a pretty solid Italian restaurant especially considering we're in PR. I ordered some special for the day pasta, the eggplant parm for an app and the tiramisu. The eggplant parm was really awesome. Super solid. The pasta special was just ok, some kind of beef pasta. The tiramisu is solid, not the best but good enough. Service is super friendly and overall the restaurant was pretty quiet though I went on a weekday. Easy parking along the street that's free.
google avatar

Jenny T.

Yelp
Good ambiance, nice staff. The food was good, and you can tell the pasta is fresh! I think my pasta dish could've used a bit more seasoning but it was still delicious nonetheless.

Yelp
I came here on a whim on a Monday night with no concrete dinner plans and I'm so glad I did. This place has a rustic cozy vibe fit for a romantic evening with a partner. Though when I came there was only one waiter working, he was doing the best he can and was attentive to all the tables. If your food takes time to arrive, remember, you're in the Caribbean, so you're on island time. I had trouble deciding on either a pizza or the seafood with squid ink linguini but eventually settled with the linguini. The seafood tasted fresh, but the pasta and sauce left a little more to be desired. For dessert I ordered the tiramisu to-go. Not too bad, but nothing to write home about either. The next time I come to PR I would definitely come here again to try their other dishes!
google avatar

Nicole W.

Yelp
So we have been eating mostly PR food since we got here and I thought let's switch it up. I'm glad we came here the food, the vibe and the service was impeccable. The bread we started off with had authentic olive oil and balsamic, I love bread so right up my ally. I had the steak with the potatoes and peppers, my daughter had a carbonara and my son had a pizza with arugula and prosciutto. Everything was delicious. Our waiter was so nice and attentive and the wine was so good. When we come back to PR we will most definitely be coming back here. The music is as the icing on the cake for me, all old school. I'm in love!!

Yelp
Attentive and friendly staff. Location is romantic and rustic. Family feels. Every dish I had was divine. I highly recommend..

Yelp
What a gem near Isla Verde! A few years ago friends of ours recommended this restaurant and we were so fortunate that they did. This I think has been our fourth time here and the food is always amazing. The wine also excellent and the atmosphere so charming and European. Highly recommended. A definite must try and five stars for sure. I would put this up against any great Italian restaurant in New York City

M L.

Yelp
What a hidden treasure! A quick Uber from the Caribe Hilton. Very friendly, attentive service. Simply amazing authentic dishes--tastes like I was sitting at my Nonna's kitchen table. We had the burrata, salad with beets and dates, arrancinni, soup, homemade pasta filled with sausage in a light sauce, red snapper with caponata, and hazelnut gelato. Everything was amazing.I can't recommend highly enough--make sure to call for a reservation.

Yelp
After having eaten Puerto Rican food all week i wanted something different and settled in Italian food. I haven't had very many good experiences at Italian restaurant, and Nonna is one of the few that I felt was one of the best Italian restaurants I've eaten in a very long time. Buratta appetizer- 1 star. The consensus was that it had no flavor and watery. If anything it was bland and lacked flavor compared to everything else they served. Goat cheese and Ricotta ravioli in mushroom sauce- 5 stars. The entire table felt this was the best in flavor. Don't be fooled by the small looking portion. It is so rich and heavy that it was actually filling for me. Duck and pear ravioli with wine sauce- 3 stars. I thought the sauce was too sweet and overpowering. It took away from appreciating what is happening inside the ravioli Boneless pork tenderloin- 4.5 stars. I thought this was done very nicely. It was perfectly cooked and the flavors were amazing. If you are a pork belly fan you will love this dish. Lasagne of the day- aka lamb lasagne. 3 stars. I thought it was good but nothing exceptional. Would I come back? Yes, I would to try a few other things Off the menu. I say stick with the goat cheese and ricotta ravioli because the mushroom sauce is epic.

Yelp
Nuestra primera visita a Nonna's. Llegamos a la 1:20pm, un domingo. Un solo mozo corriendo con todo el piso. El servicio lento. Si no haces reservación, no permiten "walk-ins".

Yelp
On the last night of our trip to San Juan, we decided to try Nonna Cucina. We were not disappointed! I'd recommend getting reservations as the restaurant is small to midsized and VERY busy. When we arrived, the restaurant was filled and a little loud, but it quieted as the two very large groups left. The staff was knowledgeable and helpful when we selected a bottle of wine to accompany our meal. We had the burrata, which was one of the best parts of our meal. The red pepper sauce was divine. My entree was the CASONCELLI ALLA BERGAMASCA. The pasta was made in house and cooked to perfection. The meat filling was plentiful (almost a little too much for me, but I don't eat a ton of meat). The sauce was beautiful. My husband had the TAGLIATA DI MANZO and the green peppercorn sauce was mouth watering. When he was done, I just kept eating the sauce and vegetables. We had a great experience here and would highly recommend!

Mario M.

Yelp
the pizza tastes like absolute garbage, the service is good but they took way too little to give me a monstrosity of a sauce filled pizza. i dont consider buying the pizza but other stuff might be good.
google avatar

Erica F.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place by chance just driving around and boy we got excited! Street parking is plenty available here as well as I think I saw a paid lot around the area as well. The place is nice and the atmosphere is romantic as well as rustic as the name of the restaurant states. I loved the fact that the wait staff worked together I felt like all wait staff of the restaurant took care of us, I loved the team work they had going on. The wait staff was super wise on the menu and helped us to have the perfect meal. COMPLEMENTARY BREAD- I always appreciate the touch for sure since I am a carb lover I got happy when we got the bread. PROCIUTTO COTTO- we got a appetizer of prosciutto cottonmouths, very interesting cut of meat but none the less very delicious SEAFOOD LINGUINI IN SQUID INK- I must say that this was the plate I was the most excited about, however I was a bit disappointed, I am a creamy sauce lover, when I saw the squid ink I could actually picture this dark and creamy sauce, the reality was a watery and sad sauce with a black pasta and some sea food on top. I did not like the taste of any of it, it was the one thing I came in to eat and the most disappointing thing we had. MUSHROOM RAVIOLI- my bf got the mushroom ravioli it also had dates and some nuts. the pasta saved our lives. it was amazing. I gave up on the sea food and ink squid and took on this plate, this one I do recommend so make sure to order this plate. so avoiding the sea food ink pasta the experience is much better. everything here was great from the place atmosphere to the meals (again besides the ink pasta) we loved everything. I will probably come back to try other stuff

John L.

Yelp
This is a great little place with great food, great service, and laid back ambiance. The menu is not typical Italian fare. Food is made from scratch and the menu is very inventive (try the lamb lasagna or duck and pear ravioli).
google avatar

Jenny B.

Yelp
Italian place in San Juan. The service was fine but the food was very meh. I ordered the TAGLIOLINI pasta and it was disappointing as it was bland and mediocre. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing but was not impressed by the food here.
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
UNREAL Italian food. I got the gnocchi & I ate every single bite. The staff was amazing & loved the cute ambiance of the restaurant.

Jennifer H.

Yelp
This was the most amazing little find in Puerto Rico! It's such a cute place and the pizza is real Italian. Yum!
google avatar

Wanda A.

Yelp
google avatar

Natalie G.

Yelp
I thought I would mix up our reservations with an Italian place since I mostly booked Puerto Rican cuisines for our other meals. I thought I was probably taking a gamble on this but it turned out excellent. It was a cozy little restaurant. They were short staffed for the night with only one server but he was so good - friendly & attentive. We had a good bottle of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. I had the gnocchi for my entree, which was very good. My husband had the Casoncelli Alla Bergamasca, which I thought was excellent.
google avatar

Cynthia B.

Yelp
Probably the best meal we had in San Juan, without doubt. Very much a local's restaurant, with handmade pasta specialties.
google avatar

Julie T.

Yelp
2nd time here & did not disappoint. We were here on October 2019 but couldn't come last year due to Covid. It was great to come back to enjoy the wonderful food at Nonna Cucina Rustica. They have an inspiring & creative menu, very nice service & a really pleasant atmosphere. Background music is American oldies which I just loved. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
google avatar

Gina C.

Yelp
Great meal and service. We had to sit at the bar next to the front door which was not spacious and that was the only negative. The bar tender was kind and accommodating. I had wine and my husband had a cocktail. We shared a pizza with sweet potato, eggplant parmigiana, and the gnocchi which were delightful. Next time we will make a reservation ahead of time to be at a table in the main dining area.
google avatar

Allan R.

Yelp
Honestly we were surprised. However, looking at the reviews we shouldn't have been. We came here during the week about 40 mins before closing unbeknownst to us however they still sat us and catered to us. The place was not busy at all, maybe 3 other tables. It has a very cozy, intimate and romantic vibe, exactly what you would expect from a traditional Italian restaurant. Our server recommended the Polpete as an appetizer, the meatballs, and they were really good, very meaty and juicy and flavorful. To drink I got La Tarantala and my wife got the Nipotina, we both enjoyed our drinks very much. They were very well balanced and refreshing. To eat I ordered a prosciutto and arugula pizza and my wife had the lasagna. Both were amazing and filling, my wife though said the lasagna may have been too filling and heavy as she couldn't finish it. They offered us dessert but we were too stuffed to indulge. Awesome spot and definitely recommend.
google avatar

Stephanie T.

Yelp
Quality Italian that rivals any Italian restaurant in Washington, DC. We were starved after a day of hiking at El Yunque, so we wanted something heavy and hearty. Dinner at Nonna's gave us just that - and was the perfect PR sendoff on our last night of the trip. I opted for the pasta of the day: duck confit lasagna with pear and gorgonzola. Our order took nearly 40 minutes to come out, which was disappointing, but when mine arrived bubbling and in the baking pan, I totally understood why. The dish was very rich and the pear cut some sweetness into every cheesy bite. The duck was plentiful and flavorful. I couldn't finish the dish because of how big the dish was. The best part was that it was $22! I highly recommend everyone visit Nonna's while in San Juan. The food is simply delicious.
google avatar

Tim R.

Yelp
The restaurant has a good vibe when you walk in. It has valet parking for $5. The staff is friendly and attentive The bread and olive oil is good. Unfortunately the dinner was not. The pork loin wrapped in pork belly was awful. The pork belly was cold unrendered fat and the pork loin was dried out but it looked pretty. The short ribs were cold like they were frozen and reheated. I won't return to this restaurant.
google avatar

Nina T.

Yelp
Lovely place. Service is great. Lots of vegetarian options. Food is tasty. Was able to get seating earlier in the evening on a busy Saturday night. Very accommodating. Salad w stuffed dates was a good choice. We had the gnocchi and ravioli pasta. Did I mention the vegetarian options?? Outstanding. Dessert is decent.
google avatar

Yelp
Incredible! One of the top 20 meals of my life. We came here on a recommendation and the food was delicious. I had the arugula salad with goat cheese, almond stuffed dates, drizzle of honey mustard. My husband a carpaccio (not my thing but it looked awesome). I had the goat cheese ravioli, it was amazing. My husband had the lasagna, and it was amazing. We had appetizers, mains, and a bottle of wine for $100.

Gary D.

Yelp
We walked in without an open table reservation and they said it would Be 30 mins for our group of 3. We sat at the bar and had a drink. Jan the bartender took us to a table in 10 minutes. We asked her to serve us the house favorites and boy did she! From Arancini, gnocchi with pancetta, NY sirloin, then eggplant Parmesan, to a bottle of red wine that complemented the meal perfectly. And man was the food delicious. Ya got to go to this restaurant!

Yelp
Left a review years ago and it's just as good as it was in the past!!! Delicious authentic italian cuisine that beats any that's back in nyc! Can't miss and a guaranteed solid meal!

Yelp
Don't skip Nonna's during your visit to San Juan! Dinner here was a food highlight of our trip. From start to finish, we enjoyed a family-style welcome and excellent food/wine. I ordered the goat cheese ravioli, while my friends had the mushroom risotto and gnocchi respectively. The first two dishes were served in hearty portions, while the latter was noticeably smaller. We tasted each other's dishes, so I can confirm that no matter what you choose, you'll leave this restaurant satisfied. I wholeheartedly recommend this place and can't wait to return!
google avatar

Yelp
The food was delicious and they have a large selection of wine. It's small and cozy. The service is amazing. A must go place to eat tasteful food. I have no complaints.

Yelp
La pasamos de show. El ambiente, comida y sobretodo el servicio excelente!!! Gracias a nuestra mesera Jan por su atención y servicio!!!

Yelp
A marvelous trattoria between Condado and Ocean Park! The full menu fits on just one page, but everything I had was delicious. The food was fantastic. Fresh Italian bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar to start. Followed by tuna carpaccio with an olive tapenade and radicchio. Yes, it was terrific. Next, I had the mushroom risotto. It was perfect. It had roasted garlic chips on top. They helped to make the risotto extraordinary. For the entree, I had corvina on a butternut squash purée with diced zucchini and yellow squash. Fantastic. The wine list is brilliantly curated. Excellent wines at reasonable prices. I highly recommend Nonna Cucina!

Yelp
This place was very cute & cozy. The food was amazing. The service was wonderful!!! He made our cocktails perfectly. The strip steak was tasty & those potatoes were so good & crispy. My friends & I will definitely be returning during our next trip.
