Nonna Soluri's Italian Deli Review - Bridgeport - Chicago - The Infatuation

"When you imagine a classic neighborhood Italian deli in your head, chances are it looks a little something like this great sandwich shop in Bridgeport. There’s a whole refrigerated case of meats and cheeses on display next to an old wood paneled counter, menus on the wall detailing all of the sandwiches and Italian ice flavors, and Al Capone and The Sopranos memorabilia all over the small space. There are only a few counter seats, so when it’s nice out, go spread out with a saucy breaded steak sandwich or spicy Italian with zippy housemade giardiniera on their grassy patio. Make sure to pick up a creamy pistachio-dusted cannoli, too—maybe even a second for the road. Food Rundown photo credit: John Ringor Spicy Italian Though more peppery than spicy, there’s no denying that the meaty stack of hot capicola, pepperoni, and hot soppressata is delicious, especially when complemented by the provolone, crisp lettuce and tomato, and tangy housemade dressing. If you do want some kick, ask them to throw some housemade hot giardiniera on there. photo credit: John Ringor Italian Breaded Steak This one’s for all of the hot sandwich people (we’re talking about temperature). The juicy steak covered in salty bread crumbs and bathed in a comforting blanket of savory tomato sauce and melty cheese is delicious. Sure, you’ll probably end up using a whole package of napkins and walk away with a few T-shirt stains, but it’s worth it." - John Ringor

Google
I had a taste for a breaded steak sandwich. The reviews here say it’s the best. I usually go to Ricobenes, so this was a bit of a gamble. The sandwich here is packed. You won’t feel that bad that you paid $16 for a sandwich without fries! Service was cool, older guy who is probably a few minutes short of retirement. I asked if he recommended hot or mild Giardiniera so he said ok I’ll put both in the sandwich lol. It was a good mix. I saw people who ordered and had to wait like 20 minutes. Foods good but not 20 minutes wait time good. I’ll be back to try other sandwiches. I love family owned businesses.

Google
Came to try my second only breaded steak. It was very delicious, almost couldn’t finish it. Would like to try an Italian sub next time.

Amaya Adams

Google
Ordered the spicy Italian. Very small sandwich for $15. No chips available to purchase.

Google
Given they have an outdoor area, it really compensates for the small, crammed area indoors. This is more like a place you walk in, order, and leave. But because they have outdoor area, again, it compensates for the indoor area. The food is almost as good as Fontanos Subs. I did ask for mayo, and they added mayo. That was a mistake on my part. It tasted like there was too much mayo. As soon as you order a cold sandwich, it would be ready in about 2 minutes. This is much quicker than any fast food restaurants I have been to. I would recommend this over any other fast food restaurants. It is cheap as well. I believe I payed $12 for the sandwich itself. Only half of it I was able to eat and the other half, I had either finish it, throw it out, or save it for later and hope it doesn't spoil (I was not around a fridge at the time). Giardia spicy, is really not spicy. It's more mild than spicy. You will feel the taste of it later in the day though.

I was driving home and saw their white sign outside. Decided to stop and try it out. I ordered the Spicy Italian sub and a Breaded Steak sandwich. They were delicious! So good that I couldn’t stop to take a picture. I’ve passed by this place for years and never stopped to look. That changed today. I will be going back pretty soon and often.

Google
Neat little place staff working here were really nice. There's a 4% credit card surcharge so bring cash. Pizza slice was stale and wasn't anything special. The sandwich came soggy and didn't really have much flavor to it. The peppers were nice though.

Google
I ordered the Italian sub and instantly thought “Where’s the meat”? A $15 sandwich should have more than a few slices of meat and 1 slice of cheese per small half. I really expected a great sandwich but was very disappointed.

Google
Attentive staff great homemade sandwiches and fantastic Italian ice!

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches with fresh ingredients on hearty Italian bread. Friendly and fun service. The restaurant is small inside with a patio in the back.

Yelp
Small. Welcoming. Great beef sandwich. Friendly staff. Side note: Yelp needs less restrictions on the amount of things needed to say & more on what the reviewer wants to say.
google avatar

Yelp
Always polite, quick, fresh and tasty! Great dependable spot in the neighborhood. Highly recommend stopping in

Yelp
Just want to keep this short and sweet. Love stopping here when I'm in the area to get a slice or a sub. Very nice mom/pop shop, ingredients are fresh, food is consistent and the service is pleasant. Keep it up and check it out!

Yelp
I'm a big fan of Italian subs, always wanting to try a new one. Usually I go to the old Taylor street area but this time I went to Bridgeport. The sandwich was good but here for a sandwich and chips and a pop it was over $17.00 and when I go on Taylor street the same size sandwich with chips and a pop is less than $10.00. Where do you think I went today?

Yelp
Try the Spicy Italian Sausage pizza! The slice is unbelievably triangular. It has just the right amount of flop, while still maintaining a pervy amount of stiffness. Whip out a sausage slice and flop it up on a table. Give it a good flip flop, and go in for the deep-throat. Definitely coming back for another isocoles. Thanks guys!

Scott M.

Yelp
The Italian beef, meatball and eye sandwiches were all great and the service was even better.

Monica P.

Yelp
A delicious, easy lunch. Tasty Caesar salad. The Italian beef was amazing. I ate it too fast to fully savor it. An injustice on my part. Great neighborhood place that deserves all the acclaim they can get.
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
Great neighborhood sangich shop. Try the spicy Italian. My partner loved the meatball sandwich. The stuffed pepper soup was outstanding. They sell their own giardiniere and both the mild and hot are good. There's a side lot where you can eat outside when the weather is nice. Tons of fresh basil growing out there. What looks like home made cannoli are sitting on the counter. Will have to try them next time.

Yelp
This place needs more recognition, they have great memorabilia as well. In fact I think it's the best affrodable stuffed sub in the cit, with fresh ingredients everytime! Always prompt with there service and polite. Too many more years! A+

Yelp
I live up the street from Nonna Soluri's but have made my way here and glad I finally did. It's your standard deli with cold & hot sandwiches, pasta, salads and slices of pizza. I ordered a slice of cheese pizza with a can of pop which is their $5 deal. Their pizza was fresh, tasty and all for the right price. I can't believe it's taken me so long to come here but I'll be back to try one of their sandwiches.
google avatar

Jose T.

Yelp
The breaded steak sandwich is huge and tasty. The meatball sandwich is also delicious would recommended it. I mentioned to the owner that I'd been wanting to try it out for a while and ended up getting a free slice of pizza, that was a pleasant surprise. Definitely has the mom n pops type of vibe

Yelp
The Best Subs in the city. It also has a great Chicago Classic, Breaded steak. Located in a real Chicago neighborhood

Yelp
Very old school deli in Bridgeport. The staff was friendly and our sandwiches were ready quickly. My fiancé likes spicier food than me so he got the spicy Italian sub with hot giardiniera and I got the regular Italian with mild giardiniera. We both loved them and the portion is huge! We want to come back soon and try some of their hot sandwiches. It looks like they have a nice big area outside you can eat at too which is always nice.

Yelp
Apparently they have new hours, but they don't update on Yelp or Grubhub, so I placed my order and paid, then came to their store. And I waited an hour in my car. If you don't take care of your business, I would go to Cathy's Deli. Every time. And I will tell each one of my family and . Everyone.

Yelp
Yummmm so glad this deli sandwich place is new to Bridgeport! My go to spot from now on! Walked in with my brother and as soon as we walked in, we were greeted by the owner (very nice guy) who told us to go out back to try their spicy homemade sausage! The heat and spices were definitely there so we ordered the spicy sausage and spicy Italian to go! Each sandwich goes from $6-$8 ish dollars which is worth because they pack your sandwiches good with sauces and other condiments! The spicy homemade sausage was a little too spicy for me but it was still good. The spicy Italian was packed so neatly, nothing fell out when I bite into my sandwich. Very even amount of lettuce, mayo, cheese, slices of salami & pepperoni, and peppers. The bread for both sandwiches were crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside. There is street parking around & you don't have to pay which is awesome! One sandwich will fill you up! Its about a foot long sandwich.
google avatar

Yelp
This gem in Bridgeport slings one of the best sandwiches in the Chicagoland area...and hands down the best breaded steak. Get it drenched in red sauce, cheese, and hot peppers!
google avatar

Meg r.

Yelp
Busy carry out business for a sunny Saturday. But just sitting at one of the few stools available for eating in is worth the wait. Will update review after I try one. But I asked about party trays and I gestured wide arms and said they were $25 for a 3 footer that could be cut and put on a tray.

Yelp
Friendly, nice place to eat, this is a must try! Cute yard to sit and eat outside and small counter space inside. Food and deli. ITALIAN Beef sandwich was good (on the saltier side) with a nice twist to the Au jus sauce on the side. I think the sauce had a bit of tomato sauce thrown in. I added hot giardiniera condiment (hot is mild, not very hot) for .50 cents. It was very flavorful and a very good size with a lot of meat. $7.99 + .50. Nice fresh Soft Italian bread. I don't know if I would order again. I liked, but did not love. Definitely worth a try, very tasty, I'm use to flavor like Portillos. FYI: this is the new up and coming neighborhood. The city planned on spending $18 million on new streets, water pipes, street lights, and sidewalks. You can feel safe since the street is vey bright at night. I wish my Mom had a bit more time to see what she hoped and envisioned for the neighborhood. Street parking...not always parking, you might get lucky earlier in the day.

Yelp
Great food. Had it first at a party had to come and get more. People are friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Classic Italian deli. Extremely friendly staff. Right away offered me some incredible olives. Then I ordered the spicy Italian cold sandwich. Wow, On point! The bread was perfect texture not too tough. My sub was huge. They sliced the meat right in front of me. The lunch was made just for me. So pleased with this experience.

Yelp
Soluri & Sons just popped up on Halsted, and I was excited to have a local italian deli close by. Stopped in and was greeted by the owner who was very nice. This placed looks like it has been here forever. Ordered an Italian sub to go. For $7, I was willing to give it a shot. Deli meat is sliced fresh right there, and everything is served inside a fresh italian bread (which is your typical hard bread). I enjoyed the sub, but wish it had more meat. While eating my sub, I couldn't help but think of Bari's sandwiches. Not only is Bari's cheaper, but more is provided and taste is comparable between these two establishments. If Soluri's was $5, I'd be here all the time. I'm all for supporting a good, local business, but there has to be some value too. On a side note, Soluri & Son's sells their own giardiniera (mild and hot), which I was tempted to try. Maybe next time!

Yelp
Too die for good. Cheap. Great service ...best $3 piece of pizza you will ever put in your mouth.

Michelle P.

Yelp
Probably my favorite sandwich shop in the neighborhood. Their chili is awesome, hot Italian is delicious and flavorful, and you can't beat their cold sandwiches. Friendly service & would recommend to anyone looking to support a family business in Bridgeport with great food & good prices.

Yelp
Hard up to say there turkey left a bad taste. Turkey quality bad at best. I've had there Italian and it was decent. For the area I would stay at Kathy De's deli off Parnell 37th I believe.

Charles P.

Yelp
Went to this place awhile ago, really good sandwiches, at the time I wanted a tuna sandwich, they didn't have it, sold out, so I said ok & left out, I was waiting on the co-worker that took me there & thinking what will I eat now. Co-worker comes & gets me says the owner wants me, I'm like for what?? Owner says, " where ya going"? I said, you said you don't have tuna, that's what I had a taste for, he says yea sold out it goes fast, but you can't leave ya gotta pick something else, all my sandwiches are good! Picked a sandwich, (he gave it to me for free) DELICIOUS, went back a couple days later & grabbed a tuna sandwich, DELICIOUS! When I'm over that way I stop in, cool owner.

Jess R.

Yelp
Best deli on the near-south side. Traditional, family run, small so if you're looking for a chain go somewhere else. I've had more meals from Soluri's than any other place in Chicago and wouldn't go anywhere else for good deli food. Parking is sometimes a hassle because they are poplar - yes, they're that good so park where you can and walk over for the best meatball sub, breaded steak and authentic cannoli. There is outdoor seating as well which comes in handy now that we live in this new Covid-world. Ignore the dumbass/rude review you'll see from the dude saying people of color would have an issue in this neighborhood - that is totally false and extremely offensive to all of the residents of every color and creed that live here as well as all the business owners of EVERY nationality in Bridgeport. We are proud to be one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the city and anyone that doesn't know us well enough to know that can just move along!
google avatar

Pedro P.

Yelp
Been there three times and has yet to fail on their food! It's been around for only about a year and a half and I hope it stays for a while. I have ordered the spicy Italian and the chicken parm sandwiches and they've been delicious. Their side salads (macaroni, pasta, Cole slaw, etc...) are delicious accompaniments to the sandwiches. Their pizza is also delicious. Since Lena's was my go-to for pizza in the neighborhood I'm glad to know that their pizza will be my go-to now. All in all, I'm happy this deli is in the neighborhood and hope it becomes a staple there too.
google avatar

Jutin K.

Yelp
I ordered the pizza, it took a lot longer than they said it would. The crust was a little cracker-like but the cheese and sauce were pretty good. Cops always hang out there, so do old Bridgeport residents so it doesn't really feel that great/safe to be there waiting for your food if you're a person of color. It's not really the fault of the business, that's just a problem with this neighborhood in general

Yelp
I have a soft spot for sub sandwiches. Actually its been a lifelong desire for a properly crafted submarine sandwich. So long as the bread is fresh, lettuce shredded and meat cut, sliced or shaved on the spot. Then a small topping of some hot giardinera and a smear of decent mayonnaise. I'll be on cloud nine. Earlier this day I was on the south side attending a "Recall Rauner" event. After a long afternoon of discussion I was ready for a late lunch. Pulled out my Android, pulled up Yelp and checked the area for "sandwiches". Soluri & Sons came up 4th on the list. After checking out reviews for a couple other delicatessens, I'd decided on this spot to grab a submarine or two. I found parking in front and the meter was a few feet from the door. It took roughly the time of fifty cents for my order to be completed. Ordered a Spicy Italian with mayo and hot giardinera. Also ordered a turkey sub which is my usual go to when I'm trying to be "good". I shared my submarines with a cousin that lives nearby. Two subs with a side of pasta salad. The total was about $18.36 with tax. The deli is cash only but offers a no-name ATM inside. It has an old school kind of feel. The kind that reminds you of an older Chicago. Posters advertising for the re-election of the Daley's still hang on their walls. The counter guy is personable the way a Dad can be. I believe his son and family were visiting the Deli at the time. I loved the Spicy Italian. Good flavors and the mayo worked well with the "house sauce" and hot giardinera. The turkey sub was good only because of the hot giardinera, if not for that, it would have been a downer. Per other reviewers some feel the cost does not match the offering. I think the cost is decent but I agree that something should take up space. Maybe an extra helping of lettuce and tomato or thicker slices of protein? All in all a decent submarine experience. I'll be eating'em again.

Nation G.

Yelp
Soluri's never fails to delight with its sandwich selection. The sandwiches themselves are 4 star, but the service is 5 star, and the lemon Italian Ice is genuinely the best I've ever had anywhere, including Johnny's and Mario's. These guys are great!
google avatar

Kuoshen W.

Yelp
Three sandwiches took an hour and a half. Good job Nonna. I don't care if your sandwiches are delicious, I don't care if this place has been years, update your business hours so your customers don't have to wait for an hour in their car. Good job once again, you made my day :)
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
we ordered 3 spicy Italian sandwiches on yelp and paid online. Yelp showing they open at 10 but they have a new sign saying they open at 11. Are you serious?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
This is probably the best tasting sandwich I ever had. The sandwich was the Spicy Italian. The meats were some of the best tasting quality. Will definitely go be back and try more.
google avatar

Carrie S.

Yelp
So i've tried to order from this place numberous times thru grubhub and everytime order hasn't been delivered. U should probably fix hours or get rid of grubhub just saying. Too many other good neighbhood spots to go to.

Yelp
Love this authentic Italian sandwich place run by really wonderful people.

Yelp
New spot on freshly paved Morgan St. that replaces the old joint that burned down, it's not new by any means! Straight to the point Italian Deli with like 8 hot and cold offerings. The Spicy Italian is the definitely the best in the city; packed with hot capicola, spicy sopressata, pepperoni, provolone cheese & fresh lettuce/ tomato. They use D' Amato's bread.. best in Chicago. Don't forget the hot giardiniera! They also have an amazing breaded steak sandwich that is a must try! Chicken Parmesan is good as well. Homemade Italian Sausage as well as canolis in the deli case to take home. D' Amato's pizza on hand too in case you can't find a sandwich to order! Prices are average and they actually give you a real sandwich, trust me. Must try in Bridgeport area.. talk later
google avatar

Christian R.

Yelp
I had the Italian sub with a side of potato salad. The bread was a perfect chewy, crispy and had a flavorful crust. Their dressing was nice and thick with a perfect mild taste. The deli slices were sliced perfectly and were tasty. But... the veggies were a little skimpy. The potato salad was great! The potatoes were sliced nice and thick and were firm with egg, a tad of onion and celery, with a little Italian seasoning and a great consistency! I advise this one to anyone.
google avatar

Jay M.

Yelp
Don't waste your time here! I walk in and the woman and male both look at me and don't say a word I'm like ok bad customer service whatever as I'm standing in front of the cash register the an older Caucasian male walks in and the woman greets him and takes his order I'm standing here like am I a ghost or something so then the male finishes making his one sandwich and ask the old guy if he has ordered he says yes then ask me "have you ordered"? I reply " I haven't " he turns around and walks away! The woman finishes the meatball sandwich the old man ordered and checks him out so I say excuse me can I order! The food is ok I make a better sandwich at home.

Yelp
Re-opened: https://www.yelp.com/biz/nonna-soluris-italian-deli-chicago Moved after a fire.
google avatar

Dave V.

Yelp
It's ok. Maybe I'm just spoiled but I wouldn't go out if my way at all for this. Good bread and the ingredients were fresh but this isn't what I expect with a good Italian deli.
google avatar

Vincent C.

Yelp
First time there after seeing it on "Chicago's Best". I came from Oak Forest and it was worth the trip. I had the breaded steak sandwich, a slice of pizza and a peach tea. The sandwich was huge and awesome, very tasty and you can see it being made. I highly recommend this. The pizza was good also, it's that bakery (Sicilian) kind cut into squares like I used to get it when I was a kid on the west side.
google avatar

Deonna M.

Yelp
Generously big sandwiches.. the cheese sandwich had the most variations of cheese and ingredients I've seen and it tasted very good. Bread crust was a bit tough but I think it's just my own preference on bread. Friendly service anytime I come in.. def 4 stars for their spot.
google avatar

Riley L.

Yelp
EPIC breaded steak sandwiches. I think that it's the red sauce that's the secret. All sorts of authentic deli sandwiches are available here, along with the most amazing cannoli.

Anthony P.

Yelp
Food is awesome would be nice if their hours of operation matched the big sign they have out front
google avatar

Alexander C.

Yelp
Best Italian sub in Chicago? This may very well be! I love getting food from Soluri & Sons. The Italian Beef sandwich was spot on and the Italian Sub is perfect. My girlfriend has tried the other subs here and loves em every time. Ive seen some comparisons to Bari subs and i thought the same thing, but, Bari has gone downhill as of recent. Bari no longer uses D'Amatos bread and is apparently in a feud with them! Now, Soluri does use that crispy and soft delicious D'Amatos bread AND they even sell D'Amatos slices of pizza! This sub shop rules. Plain and Simple. Best sandwiches in Chicago! Cash Only
google avatar

Adam K.

Yelp
New addition to the Morgan corridor we love so much. I got the spicy Italian, but the gals forgot the hot peppers. The fire wasn't there. Pretty good though. Old school, a good compliment to everything else in the area.
google avatar

Jon M.

Yelp
As a lover of all Italian sandwiches this is the best I've had in the neighborhood. The bread is fresh, the sandwiches are assembled with care and the portion is gigantic. I will for sure be back...several times over..
google avatar

Joel J.

Yelp
Order online and there was error till owner called and mention the item I selected ran out so I asked if there substitute and said sure. That right there narly customers service.
