Yakuza Owner Dayna McErlean Walks Away from Restaurants Following Accusations of Mismanagement | Eater Portland

"An Italian tavern and restaurant that closed in September 2019, Nonna has sat vacant except for occasional events; Yakuza will relocate into its former space and the owners intend for the new operation there to become worker-run." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Pretty cool spot! It's very casual, family-style. American-Italian cuisine. They have a cool patio in the back, with a big fireplace, were we sat with our dog. First of all, the garlic olive oil served with the bread! Spectacular and the best part of the evening. I happened to have a gluten free bread with me, so I could try it, and oh my, I cannot explain how delicious it was. Overall, the meal was good, but not as good as the other Kyle G's family restaurants we tried so far, and not the best Italian in Stuart either. But that's ok, the competition is serious here! Gluten free options are clearly marked, but are not many.

We happen to go here on a Monday --1/2 price appetizers! Everything we ordered was delicious. Great atmosphere! Great attentive wait staff. I will b coming back!

Google
Staff and service were great… Food was generally good, but varied by dish. Some dishes were very salty, but overall most were good. Lobster alla vodka was a great- good portion with large chunks of lobster!

Google
Super fantastic food. Kyle G doesn't have to honor veterans on Veterans Day. But he does at all of his restaurants. Rose, our server was super sweet, very attentive and was great at suggesting foods and wines to pair. Excellent job all around. Spoke to the manager after the meal and complimented on how they handled a situation at another table. Very professional. We will be back.

Google
1st time ordering from Nonnas as it was close to Turtle Reef and great reviews. Beyond wonderful experience. Good portions, great food- even roasted garlic with oil for fresh Italian bread. Chicken Franchise was exactly how I ordered it with roasted potatoes. Meatballs were good size and a meal in its own. Now, chef like salad with everything! We’re having the rest of it tmro with salmon! Another meal! Thank you, and we will be back! Delivered right to our condo door! Thank you Nonna’s. Someone even gave me $5 back for a small lemonade. I’m assuming the large cup's were out! Sweet service!

We have dined at Nonna's many times. The location is very convenient for us as we live only blocks away. The quality of the food and the outstanding service is typical of all of Kyle's restaurants. We have been here at Happy Hour for drinks and appetizers and also for mid-week meals. We have become familiar with the staff, and Mary has provided excellent service for us whenever we visit. On our most recent visit we were there for dinner and drinks on New Year's Eve. Britani was our server this time and we had a wonderful evening. She was extremely attentive and made sure our drinks and water glasses were filled promptly. My wife's meal included a special request and Britani informed us that it was written on the check, but that she would also speak with the cook to make sure it was done to her satisfaction. The pace of the meal was perfect, and we were given plenty of time between courses. We will be sure to return soon,

One of the best Italian restaurants I’ve ever been too! Management is great and service is amazing! I was very impressed with this place. Good food great location and able to just talk without feeling rushed! Thank you!

Google
Went to Nonna’s, and the experience was absolutely wonderful. Carson was our waitress and she was amazing. The food was on point. Both dishes we had were delicious. I had the lasagna and it was really really good so was the chicken Tuscany ambience was very nice. Definitely has become one of my favorite restaurants.

Kyle M.

Yelp
The chef is well versed for this cuisine and restaurant style. He balances flavors very well, and responds well to last minute accommodations and allergy restrictions. I highly recommend sitting at the chefs counter, as the kitchen staff is very friendly and interactive throughout your dining experience. As for the front of house, the Service Professional aka manager, has his/her staff well trained in proper service techniques and they are well versed in wine pairing. Great date night spot, or even if you're looking to just grab a pizza to go.

Yelp
After reading the reviews we decided to Nonna's to have a birthday celebration for my husband. Nonnas did not disappoint. As we entered we were delighted with the warm ambience of the dining room and bar. Our party of 4 were seated and our server was very prompt in asking if we wanted a cocktail before dinner. My sister in law got the White Cosmos and reported it was delish. My husband and I ordered a bottle of wine and started sipping as our dining companions finished their drink. The wine selection has variety, and is priced reasonably. The food menu had many wonderful dishes from which to choose and again reasonably priced. I ordered the chicken Marcella, my husband ordered the Gnocchi. The server brought warm bread and some of the best olive oil and herb dipping sauce. Everyone at the table got Cesar salads which were served chilled. The romaine was fresh and the dressing was delicious. I ordered the house salad which was adequate but not nearly as good as the Cesars. The main entrees portions were generous and the quality and taste well above average. I consider myself a chicken Marcella "snob," and I honestly have to say this was some of the best I've eaten. The chicken was tender and cooked to perfection, and the sauce was extremely tasty! My husband's gnocchi was excellent as well. If you are in the mood for good Italian food make sure you try Nonnas. Don't let the fact it is located in a strip mall scare you away.....

Yelp
Very surprised this place is part of Kyle G's. Seems forgotten. Chef should be fired for allowing yesterday's rubbery potatoes and overcooked asparagus to go out. When we complained to the manager, she didn't act surprised. Need an expeditor to oversee plates going out. And to add, there were only 4 tables dining. No excuse. Our reservation was at 8pm on Saturday and they were already sold out of Osso Bucco. Leaving very disappointed and will not be returning. On a positive note, if they add lights to their outdoor trees, and market it properly, they could see an uptick on private events booked there.

Yelp
All food from the bread and garlic & oil to the Eggplant Stack then the White Spicy pizza was delicious. Bartender did a great job and the atmosphere was amazing.

Yelp
There's some really good food in this area but this is definitely some of the best. Service atmosphere, and food will be bringing me back. Enjoy. We did.

Kathryn S.

Yelp
Ate here for the first time last night and loved it!! Took advantage of the happy hour drinks and menu. Got th meatballs, the handbag ravioli. Both delicious. Love the bread slices with roasted garlic they served. We ate inside but the outdoor patio area with firepit in the back looked very peaceful. Will definitely go back!!!

Yelp
So we decided to give in another try and was left deflated. It definitely caters to a happy hour clientele. It's not that the food is bad, it's just not impressive. The service was spotty and kitchen staff well... If starving, I guess you can't go bad dining here. They have parking and a full bar.

Jerry C.

Yelp
Intimate local Italian restaurant. Excellent home made dishes with a super attentive staff. Full bar with daily specials. A definite place to go for the mussels and home made pasta. We had Carson and she is an awesome server! Thanks !!!

Skipit N.

Yelp
Worst dining experience in a long time. Appetizers started out fantastic. We had the eggplant stack and the ravioli pockets. But it went downhill from there. We asked if they made chicken marsala as it wasn't on the menu, and they said yes. we asked if it could be with linguine, and they said yes. About an hour later, the waitress came to the table and said they had run out of linguine and they were making more. That's like saying Goodyear has run out of tires. What Italian restaurant runs out of pasta? We asked her to please bring us plain spaghetti instead. The waitress returned with one plate that had a hard piece of chicken over linguine with a couple of mushrooms swimming in Marsala wine. Not Marsala sauce. Just Marsala wine. Straight out of the bottle. The other plate was just a slab of chicken swimming in marsala wine. No pasta, no vegetables no rice no nothing. Just a slab of hard and cold chicken breast swimming in wine. They had absolutely no idea how to make a marsala sauce.! we would've been happier if they had just told us they didn't make it. And we could've ordered something else. We had to track the manager down and ask that we not be charged. He said he was going to come to the table to see how we were doing. He should've been at the table instantly and taken the food away. He comped the chicken dinners and the wine as he should have. Needless to say, we will never be back.

Yelp
BEST gnocchi I've had in years! I want to go back to Jensen Beach just for this dish! Seriously, amazing! I ordered the Ricotta Gnocchi with Mushroom and it was so pillowy and perfect. The sauce was absolutely delicious! I recommend! My coworkers ordered the Lasagna and it looked so good! It's apparently a very popular dish at Nonna's, and they do NOT skimp on the portions. There was so much food! The appetizers were super yummy as well. We ordered the calamari, the signature meatballs, and Nonna's handbags. Everything tasted homemade, fresh, and so hearty! It was like a real Italian grandmother made this food! The restaurant is cozy. The service was friendly and even though they were busy, we didn't have to wait too long for anything. Please come here, you will not regret it! 5 stars across the board!

Yelp
Xmas Eve decided to eat outside after the put us in a back corner looking at a door. That was with reservations. It was pretty nippy out but better than the inside very loud to be expected but sorry that table shouldn't even be there. Much as I like oak and ember I'm done with Kyle g for any holiday! 100$ for glass of cheapest wine salmon and this meat dish. Potatoes were tasteless and hard on both plates but meat was good. Not 100$ worth though. I'll stick with oak and ember .. trying new place in Stuart for Christmas dinner. Hubby said salmon cooked perfectly but portion was very small

Yelp
We had some friends visiting and it was their last night in town. We had eaten out for lunch and dinner every day for a week so on our last night, we decided to go somewhere local. Nonna was a pleasant surprise. Our waitress Rose was excellent. She was super knowledgeable about the entire menu and really had control of every aspect of our service. It was clear that she was a leader amongst the staff. We had a chopped salad, chicken piccata meatballs, zucchini, fritters, and a few cocktails. All went well until complete pandemonium broke out in the restaurant. Apparently, their computers went down and so everything had to be done manually. All of the servers had to write their orders down in Long hand and submit them to the kitchen. Clients had to leave their credit card numbers behind and Hope on good faith that they were going to be charged appropriately. Our waitress never lost her poise and seem to have everything under control at our table. From my vantage point, there were other servers that were not as successful in communicating their Band-Aid approach to this screw up. I overheard someone say that this was not the first time this has happened. Overall, I was unimpressed with the way the manager seemed to be dealing with some of the aggravated patrons. No one ever wants to leave their credit card number blindly behind not knowing what the actual bill is going to be. There were several uncomfortable servers who had more than the one night's worth of tips on them and they were being told that they had to leave their portfolio of cash tips behind. I felt really bad for them as the company was saying that they could not bring any money home that night. We were personally told that we would get a call the next day and they would verify our bill before they put it through. That did not happen. We are 100% positive that was no fault of our server since we went back to verify the next day. The whole Incident left a pretty bad taste in our mouths. I am not in the habit of leaving a bad restaurant review so let me be clear the food Was four stars. Let me also say that the service was five star by Rose. Overall, however, I would give management a failing grade. For handling the situation so poorly.

Yelp
Now this is what I was looking for when i wanted some nice Italian food!! I ordered a Buffalo Soldier cocktail that started my experience on the right note!! Excellent! Then I had the eggplant stack that did not disappoint! Another winner! My entree was the shrimp puttanesca and that just finished a nice fulfilling meal with a pretty decent ambiance to boot! I wouldn't try to sell different palates on what I ordered but for the end result all I can say is "well done Nonna's"! I'll be back soon!!!

Yelp
We often dine at Nonna's. Always outstanding! Most recently we were a party of ten and server did an excellent job. My husband and I dined there to celebrate our 57th wedding anniversary and the manager personally congratulated us and presented us with a special dessert.
google avatar

Katie K.

Yelp
3.5 rounded up. We really liked the menu options at Nonna's, and our food was good, but I'm not necessarily sure the food was too much different than anything we've had before at similar Italian restaurants. It's definitely good to have another option on the island, though!

Cathryn G.

Yelp
I was in Jensen Beach for a conference and a friend suggested we dine here. Unfortunately, upon arrival we were told they were all booked with reservations. However, we were offered a table outside and that worked for us. Our service was outstanding and our food was even better. One member of our party had a pizza which she said was great and was able to take half of it home. Another member of my party had the mushroom risotto which she said was perfectly cooked. I had the chicken piccatta and it was the best version of the dish that I have had it years. It was seriously difficult for me not to just take a spoon and drink that sauce. We finished with a piece of limoncello cake which was also phenomenal. I cannot recommend this place enough. *Please note there is a service charge on the bill. Our server claimed it all went to her though so that made me feel better.

Yelp
The meal we had at Nonna's was absolutely delicious! We started with the eggplant stack, outstanding, the fresh mozzarella and roasted tomatoes were devine, just perfect for 2. I ordered the spaghetti & Sunday sauce, omg the meatball was very large and tasty, lots of sausage and bites of the short rib in the sauce. It tasted like it simmered all day! My husband got the Veal Saltimbocca and that was fabulous, the veal, fresh spinach, capers in a delicious lemon butter sauce, it was so good. The restaurant was clean, tables set nice and far enough apart no to be on top of the other diners. Very cute inside plus the server was knowledgeable friendly and very personable. I would highly recommend it. Check out the website they run different specials.
google avatar

Pamela M.

Yelp
I went with family for dinner. All 4 of us did not like our meals. The shrimp tasted like they were fished out of a dirty canal. The chicken and veal had no flavor. Sadly I went because of the good reviews that I read

Charles D.

Yelp
We came to Nonna's specifically for the lasagna, which is supposed to be their signature dish. By 7:30 pm, they had already run out. What made this especially frustrating was watching bussers clear tables with large amounts of lasagna left over -- it looked like they cut portions too large, wasted food, and left other guests without the chance to order it. When we asked our server for a substitute, she didn't have a recommendation, which made the situation more disappointing. I ended up ordering the osso buco instead, and unfortunately, it was not prepared well -- the meat was unexpectedly crunchy, which is not normal for a dish that should be slow-cooked and tender. The service itself was fine and the ambiance pleasant, but this restaurant feels like a place that makes one thing really well and puts it on everything. If they can't manage inventory on their signature dish, and the alternative falls flat, it leaves diners with a poor experience. Sadly, that was ours.

Yelp
Went for Happy Hour. Very misleading menu. Charged $28.00 for 2 glasses of red wine. Hardly a happy hour menu. Never going back. Manager & bartender not helpful or informative. Wednesday special $9.00 pizza's also misleading. Server not helpful. Manager shady. Wow. Terrible experience!!! Would have chosen a real dinner menu venue for these prices!

Arthur V.

Yelp
This place is absolutely incredible from walking through the door being greeted right away , to the excellent service throughout our meal , I believe our waitress was Heather sry if I messed it up ! but this was my first time here in this area but I will return again

Yelp
I really enjoyed everything about Nonna's. Full disclaimer...I do not frequent places with mandated tipping. This is a Kyle establishment, and he does mandate a 16% tip for all patrons. I don't like that policy, but I was invited to go with friends of mine, so I pushed my principles aside for the day and went. The interior has been redone from his old restaurant...Kyle's American Kitchen. It is much more quiet and intimate than before. The Italian-themed music, while appreciated, was a tad too loud--for me. But compared to other very noisy restaurants, one could actually hace a conversation here. The waiter, Brock, who deserved more than a 16% tip (and no, I will not encourage this mandated tipping policy by adding more to the check), was friendly, efficient, and a good representative of how a waiter should be. No complaints there. I ordered the chicken francese which was so tender I actually didn't need a knife. Properly sauced with just the right amount of lemon and wine, I thought it was a fabulously prepared dish. I ordered the side of Alfredo bucatini. Sometimes Alfredo sauce is thick and gummy, but the chef knew exactly how to make this rich without being cloying. The pasta, which I learned from Brock, is homemade, it was delicious and cooked al dente. One suggestion...use a larger plate as some of the sauce spilled onto my pants when the waiter put the dish down. The plate was much too small for the amount of food that was on it. On Sundays two entrees gets your table a bottle of wine--a nice promotion that I hope they keep, All in all, a great Italian place that is not at all overpriced but is misguided in its tipping policy. That's my only reason not to give 5 stars. Just my opinion...

Yelp
Honestly these people are wonderful. The deserve business and great customers. I love the restaurant, ambiance and employees. Stopped in today right before they opened and fell in love with the place, and it had nothing to do with being called Nonna by all my grandchildren. They were honestly wonderful. Can't wait to take my Italian friends there when they visit. Love it !

Yelp
Our "girls night" was spent at Nonna's. Sat at the bar and had apps and drinks while waiting for our table. It's a little tight and several people we're waiting to swoop in but we nudged them out. I ordered the mozzarella loaf and it was amazing..plenty to share. The white cosmos are a slam dunk win coupled with the cuties behind the bar shaking them! Yes, I took pics . I think I had 4After, I didn't care what the dinner consisted of. The owner Kyle G stopped in to work the room..we will definitely be back!

Yelp
The service was outstanding! Bobby at the bar was top-notch--friendly, attentive, and provided some of the best, most polished service I've experienced in a long time.

Thomas M.

Yelp
The food was great from the appetizers all the way to the desserts. Service was excellent. Will definitely be coming back here with the family again.

Yelp
We had eaten at Kyle Gs , but didn't know that Nonna's had the same owner. Rose took very good care of us. I had the Veal Saltimbocca and Minestrone sour. Both were flavorful and just great. My wife hand the Chicken Francaise which was also good. A great find for our first visit to Hutchinson Island.

Yelp
First time here, sat at the bar, Bobby and Sarah were awesome!!!!!! Service was excellent and food was super yummy. The Sunday sauce is "fire" as they say today for great!!!! Salmon was amazing. I will be dining here on a regular basis. Great Ambience

Deb D.

Yelp
The food was absolutely delicious. We had the short rib lasagna and the chicken parm. Both were excellent. The sauce was So good - that's what makes a Great Italian restaurant.

Maary S.

Yelp
This restaurant was great when it first opened. The last 3 times I was there in the last 6+ months it is not good . Don't waste your money. Yesterday I was there with a group has most of the appetizer on the menu. The purses was cold and sauces was salty. Meat balls was good but salty, the fritters were very overdone. The gnocchi were mushy .not good . Even though we were the only ones in the restaurant we had to call the waitress over multiple times for drinks . Never cleared are table only when we asked for it, and also never given larger plates for all the appetizers we ordered . I live down the street and was very happy when they opened . It's a shame it has gone down hill .
google avatar

Yelp
I cannot say enough wonderful things about this Restaurant. I Come down here yearly and this place is a must!! All staff was simply amazing, however, our waitress Olivia was unbelievable. One of the best! The food is amazing, I love the whole vibe and the atmosphere.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
We were hesitant to eat here as there wasn't a real welcome feeling when you walk in and the first thing we ordered (calamari) they were out of. But we were starving and staying across the street so we decided to try them out. The food was ok, I am a huge Italian food lover, but I felt like it was bland and we all added salt to our food. The drinks were yummy. The reason for the three stars was not just the ok food but I hate when gratuity is added and you are not told. I was about to leave a 20% tip when my cousin noticed the "service fee", I know some do that for a large party but we were only 4 people.
google avatar

Ginger R.

Yelp
Such a great tine! Interior is amazing! This is a sister restaurant to Kyle G's Steakhouse. Family owned with super attentive to every detail of the dining experience. What I really love about this family owned place is the exceptional stated support to their staff. See the cars I attached that is on every table. I had the homemade gnocchi. It was such beautiful pillow of heaven in this rich spicy spreadable pork sausage base to the butter sauce. It was absolutely amazing. Hubby has linguine in clam sauce. He loved it! He licked his plate clean! We had two servers who were both amazing and made us feel right at home. Definitely go have lunch or dinner here. Experience is exceptional, food is excellent, ambiance is Devine. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
Fantastic Italian food. Kyle G's empire has a great new addition and we were really pleased with the meals. We were disappointed in one of the desserts (the limoncello cake) was not completely defrosted. The other dessert of the donuts was great, the Nutella and raspberry sauces were both great! Would love to try the pizza the next time.

Sharon G.

Yelp
Husband and I had dinner tonight it was delicious !! Started off with meatballs and calamari. Meatballs were tender and sauce was the best with a nice dollop of ricotta. Calamari was crisp and the best part were the tentacles (my favorite part ). Husband had the spicy clam pizza. Loaded with everything and the Calabrian chilis through it over the edge. I had chicken alfredo it could feed 2 people, delicious! Dessert was canolli and tiramisu. You get 2 nice canolli's and a large piece of tiramisu. The best we've had in a long time. Our server Heather made our first time enjoyable and bartender gets 2 thumbs up the Cosmos we're fantastic !! We will return.

Adam F.

Yelp
We seem to be touring all the Kyle G's restaurants. This is a wonderful little place. Ordered the lasagna and it was rich and decadent. Couldn't finish. Service was very good. Our waitress was very attentive. Small but initiate location. Make reservations especially during "season". Also, park in the lot just to the south of the plaza where Nona's is located. Dirt lot otherwise its valet.

Yelp
Kyle G has done it again! Another amazing place to enjoy delicious food, fantastic service and wonderful atmosphere. Returning soon.
google avatar

Yelp
The food was good, the parking abysmal! Vehicles in the lot blocking the way, no valet as was previously advertised- I will not be back!

Yelp
We had a fabulous meal tonight! They were running a special 2 entrees included a bottle of great wine! We will return. Great atmosphere and spectacular service.. thank you Sarah!

Yelp
Closest place to Italy in the Brevard county area! Great service, clean, and they stay on top of your drinks. Even the owner comes around and say hello a super nice guy! I highly recommend this place you will be thankful you went. Oh and get there early it's small and gets packed fast!!

Yelp
This is a cute rustic restaurant. We sat at the bar and the service was great. I ordered the flounder and it came out cold and very dry. The manager was awesome and replaced my dish with a fresh one but unfortunately it was still dry and uneatable. My husband love his Chicken Parmigiana. We also each ordered a salad with was good but delivered after they brought our entires. Net net, the manager went out of his way to make us happy, he comped my meal and both salads but I still wouldn't come back. We love Kyle G's restaurants except for this one.

Terrie B.

Yelp
I took my 86yr old mother out to dinner for a treat. We were at Nonnas restaurant last night. The restaurant was quiet. One the five tables. A couple came in approx 20 mins after we ordered. They were served dinner and we were still waiting. We asked for our server who spent a lot of the evening chatting with bar tender and one guest. In fact we had to ask for our bill and she sat at the bar talking for over 5 minutes while we waited. Food was just okay. went to pay and my mother attempted to use her $100 visa gift card with cash. the mgr would only give her $80 for the $100 gift card. this makes no logical sense. Mgr tried make it right, gave us double desserts to go. with all the options on Hutchinson Island, we won't be going back.

Yelp
(2.5 stars) I rarely give a restaurant a "bad review" but I was disappointed with my meal here--the service and ambiance were great otherwise. I'll start with the pros, when we arrived we received olive oil w garlic confit, and bread, all very yummy. I ordered the rum punch, and that was great as well. My friend and I ordered the Rigatoni a la Vodka and the Rigatoni Amatriciana. When I tell you I could barely tell these dishes apart--I mean it. I'd usually give the benefit of the doubt, but I make Vodka sauce at home, I've eaten it at various restaurants, and I swear this was just regular tomato sauce. It didn't taste or look like vodka sauce, and tasted imperceptibly different from the Amatriciana pasta sauce, albeit without the added peppers. Seems like they forgot to add cream to the sauce or added far too little. The meal wasn't Bad, but if I wanted pasta with tomato sauce, I'd have just stayed home. Aside from that, I had no real problems with the restaurant.

Yelp
The staff is incredible. Kind, warm, and helpful! The food was delicious and we had a great time as a group of 14! Definitely will be back! Mangia!

Yelp
Bobby was my host/bartender, awesome dude. Very friendly and makes an amazing unbelievable old fashioned! Old school feel with great atmosphere! I had a pizza, I know, pizza? It was sooooo worth it. Everything here is done up to perfection!

Yelp
The champagne pesto gnocchi was amazing! Light, fluffy, and deliciously seasoned! Five stars for the gnocchi! (The waiter was meh, but I can't take away stars from the delicious food because of the service).

Yelp
Went there for the first time tonight and had Isabela as my server. She gave amazing recommendations and had a smile the whole time.

Weh H.

Yelp
Service was very good. Waitress was friendly and prompt. Bread and dipping oil were great. The rest? Not so much. My daughter and I both got pasta dishes with shrimp. The shrimp was over cooked to the point of being rubbery. My puttanesca was extremely salty and there were way too many anchovies and not enough sauce, making for a fishy paste. Maybe it was just an off night or we ordered the wrong things? Also, this isn't the restaurants fault, but just a heads up that the back garden seating area gets extremely buggy at night, so I'd recommend eating inside. Kind of a bummer when you're there on vacation and want to enjoy the Florida weather.
