The Best Tomato Pies In Philly, Ranked

"Mayfair people know Nonno Ugo's for their Italian cookie trays during the holidays or pepperoni bread for lunch. But this bakery also serves tomato pie slices the size of postcards. These things are equal parts tangy sauce and crust, making them wetter than most others on the list. That sauciness only works because the bulky bottom holds everything up. Get here early or call ahead. Nonno Ugo often sells out. " - candis mclean

Nonno Ugo's Italian Bakery - Review - Mayfair - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Mayfair people know Nonno Ugo's for their Italian cookie trays during the holidays or maybe pepperoni bread during lunch. The small space has plenty of Italian aprons on the walls, but no tables whatsoever. So prepare to take your breads, pastries, and crispy stromboli to go. We always get a slice of tomato pie, which is the size of a postcard. These things are equal parts tangy sauce and crust, making them wetter than most other tomato pies in the city. It only works because the bulky crust with a crispy bottom holds everything together. Get here early or call ahead—Nonno Ugo often sells out." - Candis R. McLean

Google
I been going to this place since I was a little kid they are an true traditional old school Italian bakery like you would find in south Philly. Something that is missing to day is being able to go to a traditional bakery not the bakery at your supermarket like ShopRite, Acme, giant etc bakery . I highly recommend this place to anyone. The service is second to none and the pizza, cannolies, Italian bread, apple turn overs, etc are top notch and simply can't be beaten. It's the experience and the feeling you get from going to a independent local bakery that you just can't get from a supermarket bakery. You can definitely taste the difference between this and your supermarket bakery. The quality of the baked good is out of this world. Please give them a try and you won't be disappointed.

Google
Great little spot on Frankford Ave- they take call ahead orders for rolls, pizza, etc. If you got a large order, best to call ahead or go as early as possible because they sell out quick. The tomato pie is my favorite here, the fresh bread they bake it on really makes this one of the best in northeast.

Have been a customer for years . Even though we now live over sixty miles away we still travel down, everything is delicious. We especially enjoy the spinach and cheese stomboli and their square pies with either spinach or eggplant on top. Very nice people.

Google
I like Nonno's if I'm looking for a more denser roll that can handle a stew or for dipping. Prices are decent and the pizza slices are a nice treat while you're there. These local gems are a real treat to the neighborhood. Support them. If you found this review useful, please hit the "thumbs up" icon below so that I continue post more helpful reviews. Thanks!

Google
If I could I would give it 100 stars. The owner paid for a skilled Italian baker from Italy to come and teach him how to bake. The Italian baker stayed for a year. You never have tasted Italian bread like this. It is amazing. His pasteries are also very flavorful. So sorry I now live over 700 miles away.

Yelp
Love their breads and the best pizza, nothing fancy just good old fashioned pizza. This is my go to spot to grab a slice for breakfast during the weekend errand run.

Yelp
Want authentic Italian bread? Go here!!! All bread is delicious. They also make rolls, pizza, tomato pie, cookies, and strombolis. Family owned and friendly. Definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
Nonno Ugo's Italian bakery has been around since I was a kid. It is a staple for the people of Tacony and Mayfair. It is situated at 6606 Frankford Avenue right next to The Dunkin. It is a small place with a small sign. It is easy to miss but you don't want to. This bakery has the absolute best rolls. They also have pizza and stromboli. Everything is baked fresh and you can taste it in the product. The pizza and stromboli are just Dynamite. The store itself is very small as is the parking lot but I've never had trouble parking because it is an in and out business. They are cash only so be prepared for that. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The bakery is very clean and the atmosphere is old school, not very modern but it doesn't need to be. The prices on goods are very reasonable. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone in need of some fresh rolls or bread and also don't forget about the pizza and stromboli, very delicious

Yelp
I feel like I grew up here, it's the best Sicilian style pizza in Philly, the bread and cannolis are great too. Such a blessing to have this hidden gem in our neighborhood

Yelp
It's Saturday early morning During the busy holiday season. I'm trying to decide if it's worth driving over the bridge from Jersey into Philly just to pick up mini rolls for the meatball sliders I'm serving tonight at my party. My friend suggested Nonno's as the best mini Kaiser rolls just prefect for these big delicious meatballs, but they must be picked up fresh the day of the party. Ugh, more errands to run on party day....Oh wow was it worth the trip! It's a small little place right next to Dunkin' Donuts, easy parking at 8am. The counter woman couldn't have been nicer. My only disappointment was that I needed to call the day before if I wanted the 4dz mini kaiser. She substituted torpedo rolls that I'll cut in half. The bonus was that a fresh tray of Stromboli's came out of the kitchen --- I couldn't resist, I bought 2. now I have extra party food or lunch of my hungry college kids! Well worth the trip out of my comfort zone

Yelp
This is a small Italian bakery in a small strip of stores between a dry cleaner and a Dunkin Donuts. It is small places like this that make me glad that I live in Philadelphia. I have taken relatives here from California and they tell me how cool it is to have a store so close to your house and with such great prices. Hey, I thought they had every thing out there, I guess not. Anyway, the store is not much more then a counter. Their specialty is their bread, which is very good and one of the better breads up here in the Northeast. They also make lots of different Italian desserts Including cannolis. Most of the time you can get pizza and Stromboli's if it is not sold out. You really have to get to this store early to get a good selection as it seems like they make enough for the day. It is worth a stop if you are near this section of Frankford Ave.

Yelp
I love everything that comes out of this little hole-in-the-wall bakery, which is why I deal with the brow beating I get from the owner. If you don't call ahead for your order or arrive at a time she deems appropriate, you get verbally assaulted. If at all possible, try to deal with the daughter who also works here. She is very sweet, and I'm pretty sure she knows her mom is a loon. Tomato pie is one of the better ones around. Their rolls are great too...but PLEASE call in your order before going!

Yelp
They're round dinner rolls are all I've had from here but omg they're amazing. Make your holiday orders in time or they'll be unable to fulfill your order.

Yelp
The bread and rolls, not to mention pizza also sold by the slice is fabulous. Everything is made in a brick oven the old fashioned way. Products made with "real" and natural ingredients. I find that the owners are totally helpful.

Yelp
Nonna Ugo's - BEST rolls in the neighborhood! -Havin' the fam over for a feast on Sun? Entertainin' friends for a dinner party?!? -Just want a DELICIOUS snack, such as a steak roll toasted with EXTRA butter, or pealed apart & drowned in garlic olive oil?!? These baked pieces of heaven are not TOO soft & not TOO hard...like some-a-the guys up & down the Ave.... NO, they're JUST right...a light, crispy coating around the entire roll which encases a warm, soft, flavorful explosion of dough on the inside. -Nothin much more to say except phenomenal! Thanks for always making me & my family's meal time THAT much BETTER :) A very full & satisfied customer, Guy Medbery

Yelp
I am the "very sweet daughter" haha. While I thank you for that compliment, I also feel inclined to write in response to both of these reviews, as I no longer work in the family business (I was only ever there weekends.) I don't necessarily feel that my comment will pose a conflict of interest, as I am not technically what you would consider an employee. I would firstly like to say that the "woman", who I am sorry to see you have had some unfortunate exchanges with, is not actually my mother (although I do admit that we resemble each other) nor is she the owner- the owner is actually my father; you may never have seen him as he hangs mostly in the back- "Wizard of Oz" style. I am delighted that you seem to enjoy what Nonno Ugo's has to offer, and there is much hard work from very decent people that goes into such a small operation. Unfortunately, due to the size of Nonno Ugo's, they cannot always accomodate the demand on a daily basis, nor are they able to always make everything in abundance if in some cases it will go to waste. I also believe that they do embody one of the few local specialty stores who strive to maintain their cultural background, while bringing the heart of the city in which they reside to the forefront of their everyday efforts. As a now adult, who practically grew up inside this tiny little store, I want to assure you that my family (my father) appreciates your patronage, and always welcomes suggestions/opinions. What is Philly if not a city of very strong opinions?! And on a more personal level, I hope that you continue to visit and always remember that places like Nonno Ugo's are part of a quickly dying breed, one which will be sorely missed by future generations. Thank you, and Go Birds!

Yelp
They are the kindest people and ugo the baker saved my life last winter and ill never foget it unfortunately his son and i got into a disagreement that i really regreat. I love you guys and thanks from the bottom of my heart from David

Yelp
I'll give it a five! The bread, pizza, along with all their products, are straight from Italy. I know, I've been there plenty of times. It is a small place with limited production facilities so they are fussy about placing orders. I believe that this is because they want to please all their customers as best they can. As far as I'm concerned there are only two outstanding "panettiere del pane" in Philadelphia, Nonno Ugo's in the Northeast and Sarcone's in South Philly.
