Nook - Review - Russian Hill - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"From the outside, Nook in Russian Hill seems like a very conservative choice. Outdoor tables, a chill vibe, potted plants. But when you get inside, this cafe/wine bar does something completely wild. They serve granola with milk and yogurt. In the same bowl. Would you serve a gin and vodka martini? A ham and cheese and chocolate croissant? No. Besides the brief granola break, Nook is a reliable neighborhood hang in Russian Hill for breakfast, lunch, and Happy Hour. It’s easy, it's never too crowded, and it has a comfortable, homey vibe. While they have their slip-ups—the occasional cold oatmeal an out of proportion bread-to-filling ratio on some sandwiches, Nook delivers on coffee, granola, bagels, and generally good quick eats. The free wifi on weekdays is clutch, and Nook also stocks a solid case of pastries, a lot of them gluten-free. On a nice day, it’s pretty ideal to grab an outdoor table, watch the cable cars cruise by, and pretend to be a tourist. Food Rundown Lox & Bagel The bagels here are exceptionally good for SF and they give you half a salmon’s worth of lox. Always a good choice. Breakfast Sandwiches Prep your taste buds for a lot of hot sauce because they’re pretty bland. Not bad, but not especially exciting either. Granola The actual granola is delicious. Make sure you remind them not to top it with all the dairy products in the fridge. Salads Good but small. You will need to eat more - and they have a tendency to over-dress. The beet salad with goat cheese and the shrimp, avocado, and grapefruit top our list. Chicken Pesto Sandwich We’re fans of the grilled chicken and pesto on a whole wheat baguette. Olive Tapenade, Hummus, Tomato, Artichokes, Capers Too many ingredients, but not enough of any of them. Heavy on the ciabatta, which is good, but you’re better off going for a sandwich with chicken." - Taylor Abrams

31 SF Coffee Shops For Getting Work Done

"Wifi: Yes Like the name suggests, Nook is on the smaller side. So, if you’re traveling with an entourage of accessories, table space will be an issue. But otherwise, this Russian Hill cafe is a great spot to grab lunch and take care of business. Skip the salads and go for the hummus plate with pita, cucumbers, and tomatoes, or the smoked salmon bagel." - lani conway, julia chen 1, ricky rodriguez

Where To Eat In Russian Hill

"One of the best breakfasts in the neighborhood is also on a picturesque corner. Nook does a pretty damn good bagel with lox, and we like the granola, too. At lunchtime, skip the salads and go for the hummus plate with pita, cucumbers, and tomatoes. The space isn’t huge, but there’s wifi, so you can also try to get some work done. We love the Happy Hour (5-7pm) with extremely inexpensive deals on house wines and beer." - will kamensky, julia chen 1, ricky rodriguez

Where to Eat in Phoenix

"A cozy restaurant that combines modern American with Italian fare, The Nook Kitchen is where to go for a low-key dining experience when you want a traditional or white pizza. Other tasty options include braised pork and almond-crusted salmon." - MATADOR_NETWORK

It looks like there is a new administration in place. Very friendly staff and food is very good. No internet available for work, but a great place to bring friends over

Google
Nice litte gem in SF. Seems to be re-opened by new owners as the interior looks slightly different as on the pictures. Perfect for a break, they have different sandwiches and coffee and sodas. Outside seating also possible, I can recommend it.

Google
I've been here a couple times now, and every time its been really pleasant. Great atmosphere, and the guy working counter is always very nice. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for a nice breakfast/brunch spot in the area!

Google
Best local coffee shop and wine bar! Love the salmon toast for breakfast and a latte made by their wonderful barista. Not to mention the great wine, tasty snacks, and immaculate vibes in the evening.. Tommy is the best and Nook is a Nob Hill gem!!!

Liz Hartland

Google
My husband and I frequent this wine bar and love it. Food and wine are great, Tommy the owner is so kind, and they are located on a charming corner with amazing sunshine on a nice day.

Google
Late night visitors- heads up: NO WiFi at night and NO computers allowed. So if you’re looking for a late-night work/study spot, don’t go here. However, if you’re looking for a cute wine bar with friendly service, you’re in the perfect place. Even as I was let down about the WiFi, I was uplifted by the friendly man behind the counter. There’s a non-alcoholic drink option as well. No food options at night sadly.

Google
I decided to randomly stop here for a glass of wine before meeting my friends for dinner and was not disappointed! The wine options they provided showcased a variety of styles and regions, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the service was impeccable! Omeed and Amanda were patient, knowledgeable, friendly, and very accommodating. I will definitely return.

Google
Great local spot. Owner and all the staff are so friendly and warm. Perfect spot to work at or read during the day with a coffee and even better vibes at night when it turns into a wine bar. Plus pretty inexpensive with generous pours

Yelp
Such a cute and cozy neighborhood spot right off of Hyde. Their various sandwiches and coffees are great for brunch. Everyone who works there is lovely and you can instantly sense the welcoming small business feel. Great spot for working during the day and transitioning to nighttime for a pre-dinner glass of wine.

Yelp
We love TAMI!!!!!!! He is so thoughtful and generous. The owner and vibe is great. Solid neighborhood spot
google avatar

Yelp
Went here to celebrate a birthday. The spot was really cute with some outdoor seating, too. Service was great, and the wine selection was great. I loved the pinot.
google avatar

Yelp
Nook feels very San Francisco- a cute corner café that also serves as a wine bar with outside tables on a slope next to the cable car line. I always sit outside even if it's cold because I like to watch the cable car though it can be a bit loud so not the best for an intimate conversation. There are some flower planters next door with geraniums so it's like you are sitting next to a little garden.

Yelp
This place is such a hidden gem! Came in here on a Friday evening for a glass of wine and some food to nibble on before dinner, and quite honestly I didnt want to leave. Despite being small in size, the mood of the place felt very intimate and cozy, and the owner is such a nice guy. The burrata flatbread was calling my name, and I'm SO glad it did because this might honestly be the best flatbread I've ever had. It was perfectly cheesy, without being overloaded, and the balsamic glaze was tactfully done to offset the heaviness of the cheese. Paired with a chardonnay, it was the perfect treat and I will be back again to indulge in all the goodness and charm Nook has to offer.

Yelp
Nook has recently reopened after some renovating, and it's come back better than ever! It's a beautiful open space with fresh air and lots of sunlight. Since it's on the corner of Hyde and Jackson you get the genuine SF ambiance of cable cars passing and the beautiful neighborhood trees. They are open again for coffee with breakfast toasts, and also for dinner with a new menu and delicious wine. So nice to see you back at it!
google avatar

Abigael K.

Yelp
We came for a glass of wine on a Saturday evening and it was fairly empty. However, it is a great spot and I hope they start to gather more of a crowd soon. It is perfect for date night. By day, it is a cafe which I have not checked out yet but presume it is good based on a good experience there getting wine in the evening.
google avatar

Brenna D.

Yelp
Nook was under renovation for a while and I'm so glad they've reopened! I love the clean, modern look of the inside and sitting at one of those yellow tables on hyde as the cable cars come by feels truly san francisco. The coffee was incredible and I love that they also have a great wine collection so you can pivot to something stronger after your coffee.

Yelp
This place is just so peaceful. Went here for a Sunday morning breakfast. Great service and kind staff, delicious and light tasting food and coffee, and bossa nova ish music playing. Felt so fancy. Definitely get the salmon on toast!! Best thing ever!!

Yelp
Great wine, great service. Perfect for a chill night with friends or even by yourself. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Holger I.

Yelp
Great coffee shop offering locally made mediterranean style sandwiches with nice outdoor and indoor seating at the crossing of 2 cable car tracks. On request they make the sandwiches as gluten-free plates.
google avatar

Suveena T.

Yelp
The coffee here is reasonably priced, and the portions are generous, definitely a solid choice for a quick pick-me-up if you're in the neighborhood. The staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is welcoming. However, if you're looking for a spot to work or study, keep in mind that there's a 1-hour Wi-Fi limit, which might not be ideal for longer stays. The music is also quite loud, and the tables are small. I went with a friend and was told that because we came together, we had to share a table, and it was a tight squeeze fitting both our laptops. Outlets are limited as well.
google avatar

Mia F.

Yelp
Amazing coffee, the vanilla latte was great and the size was much larger than most coffee shops in the city! The staff is super friendly and welcoming. The sandwiches all looked great, I had the vegetarian one and it was a 10/10. It's a great place to do some work from because they have a lot of indoor and outdoor seating.

Ananth N.

Yelp
I continue to be delighted by the treats Nook has to offer. Their espresso selection is lovely, the chicken pesto sandwich is fantastic, and their staff is so kind and friendly! It has become my favorite spot in the Nob Hill/Russian Hill area.
google avatar

J B.

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood and the new menu since Nook has revamped itself is great! The staff I usually encounter are friendly and amazing. HOWEVER, I do not intend to ever go back. While I was there recently, I overheard the man that took my order (possibly the owner) make a rude comment to other people at nearby tables about how I had only ordered one drink, even though I had two other people sitting with me. It's absurd to set these unspoken or unadvertised expectations of your customers and then to try and shame them.

Abi H.

Yelp
Love the refurb here, great place to enjoy wine and good food with friends or a date!

Ahmed C.

Yelp
Great place with extremely friendly staff. It's a good place to get some work or studying done. The location is a bit loud due to the rail cart. The food is consistent and of decent proportion.
google avatar

Vivian P.

Yelp
Came to do some work in the afternoon and was pleasantly surprised. It was very quaint inside - lots of tables with people just working or reading. Got the salmon toast with side salad - pretty pricey for what it was but price for sitting in a quiet cafe I suppose. Definitely recommend for anyone local just wanting a no-nonsense place to work
google avatar

Yelp
I visited Nook for breakfast this weekend! I have done little exploring in this area so far, and my first impression of this casual breakfast place was a great one. The food was AWESOME (I ordered the breakfast burrito and a dirty chai:)). The restaurant is situated right next to the Powell & Hyde trolley tracks, and you can see tourists riding it down to Ghirardelli Square. I hear that Nook also transforms into a wine bar at night. I'd love to explore this area more on another beautiful day, and in the evening in the near future!
google avatar

Morgan L.

Yelp
New renovation looks amazing and chic on the corner of Jackson and hyde. The coffee was on par with the drinks pre-renovation. Strong espresso but not bitter. The menu revamp is extremely exciting and an upgrade from their already good food. Their chorizo empanada and dips were top tier and the jamón sandwich was perfectly balanced with manchego, jalapeño, and carmelized onions. The owner who served us was very nice, and food came out very quickly. They are now serving dinner (tapas-eske) and we will definitely be back for that and a glass of wine. It's a very European vibe especially being on the cable car line. If you've been to Nook before, go again for a new but better experience!
google avatar

Kitty O.

Yelp
$12 wine flight!!! Came here when I was picking up from the chicken place and had some time to kill. Chill vibe. Nice to watch the cable cars go by. They are hoping to be open later as a wine bar in the future so watch this space!!! Owner is chatty and amiable.
google avatar

Cliff H.

Yelp
New owner as of 6 months ago per employee. I've never been here before and was looking forward to the tapenade sandwich but they don't serve it anymore. Got the veggie add prosciutto and olive oil. It was really good. Everything was fresh. Service was fast.
google avatar

Niv C.

Yelp
I found this adorable cafe on the corner of Hyde and Jackson. It almost reminds me of a lazy European afternoon sipping coffee and people watching. At Nook looking out the window you can watch the iconic cable car making a slow turn Tommy the owner is very hospitable and fun to chat. The baguette sandwiches are not to be missed. It's definitely one of the best baguettes i have outside France.
google avatar

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
My bf and I always walk past Nook and I've always wanted to check it out. On our way home from a walk, we finally decided to stop and treat ourselves. Two glasses of happy hour wine and a delicious, generous sized cheese plate for just a little over $30 total whoa!! The wine we chose from the happy hour selection is normally in their premium selection. We sat at an outside table, people watching, cable cars passing by & ringing their bells, etc etc. The owner is a gem...was super welcoming and warm, and she was certainly a contributing factor to our positive experience at Nook. We felt so happy to be there and can't wait to go back soon!
google avatar

Erika W.

Yelp
Ordered their iced latte with soy to-go! Friendly service :) Almond & soy +$0.75 Oat +$1.00 I would come again.
google avatar

Lexi T.

Yelp
My favorite neighborhood spot. Been coming here for months, owner is wonderful, food & coffee is good and it even turns into a wine bar later on in the day. Super charming and a great place to get work done or catch up with a friend!
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
Quiet and small study space on Saturday mornings. Not a place for socializing during this time! I got the matcha latte. It was okay. It definitely could have used more matcha because I could barely taste any matcha in the latte ($6) Other notes: some outdoor tables. Parking is hard to find
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
Really good macchiato and white mocha. Also friendly with great service. Great location.

Steph L.

Yelp
I watched the owner of this establishment borderline assault a girl for sitting at the outdoor seating that was available. I witnessed from across the street and had to console her after. He had no customers (maybe for good reason) so I'm not sure why he felt that was necessary or morally sound. He looked in his 50s acting crazy towards a young women. We have video footage if the owner wants to deny this
google avatar

Misselayneous M.

Yelp
This is a quintessential San Francisco café to get a glass of wine read a book and watch a cable car stop. The owners are lovely and personable and it harkens back to the old days of SF and Bohemia
google avatar

Cynthia Z.

Yelp
Such a sweet little spot with great ambiance and really kind staff. The lighting is lovely, and the food is solid for the price. I stopped by on my way home and had a really nice time here, so I'll definitely be back when I'm in the area again!
google avatar

Karyna R.

Yelp
Randomly stopped by this cute place as we walked from Lombard street. This was such a pleasant surprise! The wine is great with very affordable pricing. The hummus is DELICIOUS and their three cheese small plate is a lot of bang for your buck. Definitely recommend . Please stop and help support small businesses like these.
google avatar

Sary O.

Yelp
Me and my husband were visiting family and we decided to get some coffee in this little Gem of Nob Hill. Very clean. The owner Rhana(sp?) was very hospitable and very kind. The homemade Hummus plate was delicious. We will come again!
google avatar

Nicole P.

Yelp
Great little cafe in Russian Hill / Nob Hill! Coffee is great and they have a ton of breakfast and lunch options! Great place to work at while sipping a coffee or eating breakfast for a couple hours, especially since they have outlets! Great tourist break stop too since you can watch the trolley pass by and the sun light hits the cafe so nicely. Employees are super nice and accommodating as wel'
google avatar

Larry S.

Yelp
We chanced upon the Nook by pure luck and glad we did! We had taken the cable car up from Market and jumped off at Hyde and then walked down the four blocks to pick up another cable car to bring us to Lombard street (ok, we were being super touristy this day!). The next cable car was a few minute away and when it arrived it was packed, sensing a trend, we decided to check out the Nook. It was inviting, lookign in it was simple, well appointed, had a bunch of folks at laptops and a few tabs by the window for couples. We simply wanted a snack and a glass of wine and that worked! Nice wine choices and the tomato bisque - perfect! What made the visit most pleasant was the owner ( manager?) who took the tome to talk with us, and help us decide on our order. We felt liek regulars and locals. We are telling or son and friends n town - this is worth a visit! I know I would like to find this again when we visit next!

Emily K.

Yelp
Delicious iced mocha! Had the yogurt with berries for breakfast - it was good! Nothing to write home about, but it was good value for the price! Make sure to get the iced mocha!
google avatar

Karina P.

Yelp
Came here for coffee/tea yesterday afternoon with my cousin. I found this place on yelp and it was conveniently located so we decided to try it out! I went with the chai latte and my cousin got the peppermint tea. Overall the shop was cute! I liked the simple vibe and cozy feel. My latte was ok..not the best and not the worst! The latte didn't really taste like chai at all but more so just hot milk! I still had a decent experience (mostly because of my company) and I would probably come back if I was in the area just based on location. This place also has food so maybe I need to give that a try before fully rating this spot. I wouldn't consider myself a coffee expert but this definitely wasn't anything special!
google avatar

Antonia Z.

Yelp
Nook does it all! From mimosas, coffee, waffles, breakfast burritos and bagels. It'a a neighborhood gem. Nook is my go to when I'm having a busy morning and need something quick and on the go for breakfast. I typically call in my order and like that they let you know approximately when it will be ready. They're outdoor seating is quaint and in sunny location when the sun is out.
google avatar

Johnny B.

Yelp
Some of my favorite cold brew in the city. Bagels are great. Fair prices. Friendly staff. Solid menu. I recommend this spot if you are in the area.

Giu G.

Yelp
A real European style cafe' This place is a gem, serving good food with an outstanding service and charm We had croissants, bagel with lox and cream cheese, cappuccino and mimosa you feel welcome and just want to go back again and again Good sandwiches as well
google avatar

Stephen B.

Yelp
The cortado is delicious, as is the vanilla latte. The owners are so friendly and really make the cafe feel warm and welcoming. Great corner cafe spot.
google avatar

Juliana S.

Yelp
This is a SF staple, great neighborhood cafe in Russian Hill. The sandwiches are to die for and the best part is that you can get a glass of wine at the end of your day as the cafe doubles as a wine bar (there's a new and much improved wine selection )
google avatar

Tony L.

Yelp
I don't know what the hype is about with this place because we didn't get any of it. It was the worst breakfast I have ever experienced. I cook better than this when I was 9 years old. I thought she was going to say, "I'm just kidding, here is your real breakfast." I ordered the ham sandwich which was fine, with a few burnt edges. My wife's scrambled eggs with bacon and butter baguette looked like they just bussed it off a table and gave it to us. The baguette was just heated enough to be dry. The egg (yeah 1 egg) was cook, stabbed at with spatula a couple of times, then it was sent off to occupy a small section of a plate that resembled someone's uneaten portion. They also forgot the butter. My son's bagel with smoked salmon was swimming in a pool of lemon juice. They need to rename this plate Lemon Soggy Bagel. And someone in the back was messing around with a Japan Katana sword to slice this bagel in half. I brought the plate back to the pickup counter and said, "excuse me this bagel is swimming in a pool of water. She said, "that is lemon juice." I said, "oh", turned around, stared at the plate, and brought it back to our table. My wife couldn't stand it, she brought it back to have the plate switched out. Coffee was good. Would have gave it a 1 star if it wasn't. Never mind I'm changing to 1 star, I tipped them 15% in advance.
google avatar

Bianka B.

Yelp
I am so glad they finally reopened! There are tables outside and limited seating is available inside (due to COVID measures).

Nathalie P.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! It's so cute, just the place to get those afternoon emails in while enjoying a coffee or, depending on how important those emails are, a bit of wine during their happy hour. The staff is soo great; Ana is just lovely, love to have a nice chat with her when I come in. Coffee is delish, drinks are great, and the food is delicious. Recommend to try a dish with Ana's homemade hummus. Come in, relax, and feel at home. 5 stars no second thought :)
google avatar

Danielle S.

Yelp
I was looking for a wine/coffee bar specifically when I came upon Nook. I had googled a nearby spot - there it was. I stopped in and it's in such a fun touristy spot. The cable car rides right past it. I arrived just in time for happy hour. I pulled out my laptop and started a tab. First I started with a Coca Cola because I needed some sugar to work. Then, I moved on to a glass of Malbec from Lodi which was delish. I started to get a little hungry and ordered the chicken, pesto, tomato & mozzarella pizza. It is so tasty and they added the perfect amount of mozzarella. I also had the lentil soup which is made from scratch onsite. It was delicious - buttery. It is definitely comforting. I also tried the hummus which is also made from scratch onsite. It is so delicious. The pita that cane with the hummus was warm and seasoned deliciously. The first thing I noticed was the woman, Rana, at the counter, she is so friendly. And it's a family run place. Her daughter and husband were here this eveni and they are are all so lovely and friendly. I will say they make you feel so comfortable. I love the way they make you feel like part of a neighborhood. I highly recommend it. There's also internet. I will say for those who bring their laptops to cafes, please make sure to patron properly. You're using space and places this one are hard to come by, so make sure to keep them in business. I'm super happy I stopped in tonight.

Yelp
After driving around for an hour looking for someplace to park and a restaurant after a long day of sightseeing, we stumbled upon this cute place. We decided on the hummus/chicken wrap and the veggie sandwich. Both were handmade and delicious! My husband raved about the homemade hummus! The owner was gracious enough to let us dine in even though they were actually closing. Nice wine selection as well!
google avatar

Celi R.

Yelp
My favorite Coffeeshop In San Francisco! Big bright windows to enjoy the trolley going by. Reminds me of a cafe you would find in Europe. Friendly staff. I like the avocado mango chutney sandwich, lox bagel, hummus wraps and pita pizzas. They also have soup and cakes they switch out that are pretty amazing! Bottomless on weekends till 3, one of the best deals in town ! Overall: -delicious food -lots of vegetarian options -best hummus in the world! -super cute! -soy and almond milk options -free WiFi on weekdays
