Intensely Flavorful Soups, at Noona Noodles | The New Yorker

"I found Noona Noodles, a tiny stall in a multistory food court in Manhattan’s Koreatown, to embody sonmat — the Korean idea of “hand taste” — largely because Byung‑Sul Kim touches (or nearly touches) almost everything that comes out of its tiny kitchen. Kim, who has cooked professionally since 1997 and briefly ran a 24‑hour outpost in Flushing before opening Noona, focused the stall on noodles while her daughter Stella handles branding and front‑of‑house; Stella joined full time in 2020 and brought with her cooks from the Flushing team. The menu is surprisingly large for the space: nine ramens (including one finished with cilantro, lime, jalapeño and a shot of tequila and the Frat Boy topped with melted cheese and a hot dog on a stick), and two naengmyeon preparations rebranded as Icy (mul) and Icy Spicy (bibim). The naengmyeon broth is intensely flavorful — Kim boils brisket with fresh pineapple, Asian pear, apple, lemon, daikon and assorted alliums, seasons it with rice vinegar, kosher salt and dark‑brown sugar, and stores it in a refrigerated yooksu tong — then adds big hunks of slushy ice, skinny chewy noodles made from potato and buckwheat flours, lightly pickled daikon and cucumber sprinkled with sesame, and slices of brisket; Icy Spicy has a thick layer of gochujang to be stirred in, while the Icy comes with pink vinegar and hot mustard to adjust the heat. I also loved the Sticky Crispy Dumplings — crunchy fried shrimp, pork, or vegetable potstickers tossed with chunks of pineapple in a fiery sauce of gochugaru, garlic, ginger, ketchup and honey (chewy cylindrical rice cakes are an advisable add‑on) — and plan to return for the superlative jjam bbong, a spicy seafood soup of mussels, clams, head‑on prawns, shrimp and squid sautéed with bok choy, zucchini and mushrooms and added with springy wheat noodles to a collagen‑rich chicken broth seasoned with kombu dashi and anchovies; heat can be adjusted with more or less ground gochugaru and puréed jalapeños. Dishes run $6–$21, and I like to take my tray to the sunny third floor to eat." - Hannah Goldfield

It’s my noodle shop, so I have to give it a shout out. It’s the best. Even when I’m not there, I’ll order via uber. My mom’s collagen-rich bone broth in the kalguksu (knife cut noodles) and soojaebi (handpulled noodles) does wonders for my skin. Our family loves fistfuls of vegetables in our soup so you always get the good stuff. We’re in a food court in k-town so the people watching is next level.

Google
Not only me but all of my colleagues loved the noodles. I chose pepper bomb (spicy stir fry seafood noodle) and they had Bulgogi ramen and 삼겹살 pork belly ramen. I would like to try other ones soon. Kind staff, small but cozy environment. Strongly recommend this noodle restaurant.

Google
my dad told me to write a review because he just loved this place so much, and my father is a hard man to please. so you can imagine how much my dad and i enjoyed not only the food here but the kindness of the people who worked here and the warm environment of the restaurant. we loved it so much in fact that we came here two days in a row for dinner while we were visiting nyc. our food was fresh and flavorful, and we just had to come back again. and both times, consistent service, food, and ambience. thanks for a delicious meal :D

Google
We visited Noona Noodles last night, on the first night of our trip. The atmosphere was so cozy and both the guests and staff were all so friendly! I had Oxtail soup (w/bone broth) and my daughter had Tonkotsu Ramen. Both were SO tasty and filling for after a long travel day. Again, the staff was so incredible and the woman who helped us at the cash was so friendly and helpful. She made us feel like we were regulars. We can't wait to go back and try some more that's on the menu! Definitely recommend!

Google
We visited Noona Noodles on Christmas Day, and it was a great experience. The restaurant is very cozy, and the staff is friendly and welcoming. We tried several dishes — bibimbap, jjampong, short ribs, and the frat boy noodles — and everything was very good. We enjoyed all of it and will definitely be coming back.

Google
SO GOOD!!! Not a fancy restaurant in any means but the food is amazing. My friend and I ordered the seafood noodle entree and I literally have never eaten so much in my life. This is so worth the price in New York and the ingredients tasted so fresh and delicious. It was actually the most perfect meal on a cold wintry day, and I can’t wait to bring my sister here next time!

Raiwin M.

Google
I really enjoyed trying Noona! The Korean-style noodles were so unique — especially the cold noodle dish (Icy Spicy Noodles) which was refreshing and full of flavor. I’d never had anything like it before, and I absolutely loved it. Such a cool and different experience!

Google
This was incredible food!! It was my first time having Korean food and it was heavenly. We tried the Jjam bbong and K Rage Kimchi Udon noodles. They serving size was pretty big and super filling. Highly recommended if you’re in the area. Loved the food and will definitely be visiting again.

Google
Yikes 😬. Kalbi was so tough my husband couldn’t even eat. The panjun was soggy as it came out. My jjampong looked appealing but the shrimps had no flavor. We stopped here with their reviews but we would not stop here again.

Yelp
Some places set themselves apart by getting hundreds of details right. My bimbimbap was full of generously proportioned fresh ingredients, delicious flavors and crisp condiments. I was so pleased and surprised that in a town where no one offers a for here cup for coffee, my bimbimbap was served to me in a substantial white ceramic bowl. Although it's the norm, nothing is more distasteful than hot food served in plastic. This little place is a cozy find in Koreatown. Looks like the locals know it. It's full at lunchtime. Sweet, prompt service. Proprietress looks like a queen.

Yelp
Really affordable Korean noodle soup spot! Everything is reasonably priced and the portion sizes are pretty large. They used to be in the food hall in k-town but now have a small store a few blocks away. I tried the Kalguksu which had a really tasty broth along with some brisket and noodles. Definitely hit the spot for a cold day!

Yelp
I was looking for a bite to eat in k-town after a day wandering around the city, and I was intrigued by Noona Noodles. They had a vast selection of noodles displayed right outside their shop, and honestly, a nice hot bowl of noodles sounded like the perfect meal for a chillier day. The prices do seem a bit high, but once I received my bowl and saw the generous portion, I didn't mind the price! I ordered the bulgogi ramen. The beef itself was crispy and tasty. The dish also came with an assortment of veggies (carrots, scallions, radish, and kale). I asked for an egg to add as an extra. I expected to be poached, but I received it as hard-boiled - which is okay, just not what I expected. This place is great for a solo, sit-down meal. Service is also very kind and attentive - no matter how busy it got! I sat down, and my bowl was brought to my table. I was offered water once I sat down. Just note that it is a small space, so seating can be limited.

Yelp
Solid noodles, and really fast service, the staff was also super friendly. We got the Sticky Crispy Dumplings and Kalguksu, which both were fast and fantastic. The dumplings had a little bit of a kick to it, but still delicious. The broth was very hearty and it was steaming hot. I got the beef brisket, but I didn't really end up liking the texture inside the soup I thought it didn't really complement the noodles well. The noodles had great texture. Good spot for a quick lunch!

Yelp
Delicious jam pong, kimchi noodle soup with crispy pork, fried chicken with a spicy and sweet sauce. Washed down with Tsing Tao beer. The owner and staff are super friendly and courteous as well. Very casual environment and lighted environment with cameras. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
4/5 Naengmyeon 4/5 Jjampong This is a fast casual Korean spot, we really enjoyed a quick dinner here. The large portions at a very fair price, along with satisfactory flavor -- we'd definitely come back!
google avatar

Yelp
Returning to Noona, I decided to retry their jjampong, now priced at $18. The noodle soup remained relatively unchanged. The portion size was quite generous, and so too was the amount of seafood. Ample mussels, both head-on shell-on shrimp and peeled shrimp, as well as octopus, adorned the bowl. The soup was rich with stock and garlic aromatics. Notably, the smokiness of wok-sautéed vegetables (wok-hei / 鍋氣) was present as well. One glaring difference was the spice level. Despite ordering it spicy, it seemed mild to medium at best. I broke a sweat from the hot August day rather than from the spiciness.
google avatar

Yelp
Cozy, heart warming meal. Nothing too crazy or mind blowing, but pretty good. Decent portion and pricing for ktown. Would go back in a pinch.
google avatar

Yelp
What a great casual noodle restaurant. Such a selection of different Korean and Asian noodle dishes. I can hear on a cold November day, and the noodle soup here really hit the spot. I got the kalguksu and a side of dumplings and both were s=very satisfying, fresh and flavorful. Will definitely be coming back to try their other dishes.
google avatar

Yelp
My friends and I came here on a whim after some karaoke a few streets down. The food did not disappoint. The portions were HUGE. A great value for what you pay for. You order at the counter and pay, and they will call your name or help bring your tray to your table. Lots of options to choose from - and you can customize your spice level for some of the dishes. They also have pickled radish, kimchi, and chili oil to help enhance the dishes. My friends and I were so surprised we've never come across this sooner and will definitely be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was okay, not bad, not great. It hit the spot since it was wet out and it was right next to my hotel. Service was fast, there's a lot of young people behind the counter running the place. Ambiance was fluorescent light bright with steel bowls, a little sterile in some ways, but got the job done. Good for something fast and easy, but not the kind of place you wanna go and hang out for a while. Not a heavy Korean vibe, feels more fusiony.

Yelp
Their cooking reminds me of my mother-in-laws cooking. Hardy meals with traditional flavors. Country style cooking with a mother's touch. A must stop in for a culinary experience.

Yelp
This spot started off as a hole in the wall in a food hall in K-town and my friend cried legitimate tears when she saw this placed had been removed. We then found out it's now a new restaurant with its own location in K town (rightfully deserved), according to my friend who raves about their okinomoyami (which is vegetarian) and their spicy ramen noodles. I got their icy spicy since it was a hot day and it was delicious! Though I wish that the price was lower for the amount you get and that it had shaved pear instead of radish, but it was still delicious! Really good spot for classic Korean noodle dishes.
google avatar

Natalie T.

Yelp
Nice spot for different Korean noodle dishes in a casual setting. This is more of a spot for a quick bite than to go for the ambience since it is in a food court. Went with the udon and the broth, noodles, and shrimp tempura were perfectly cooked. The egg was hard boiled instead of poached though which was a little let done. Flavors were good otherwise and the workers were friendly.
google avatar

JP P.

Yelp
SO and I were in the vicinity and had lunch here. There are a good number of options here for a smaller place. We had the seafood pajeon, bibim bap with bulgogi and mul naengmyun. They have nice refreshments as well along with beer!
google avatar

Kally T.

Yelp
Noona Noodles is a tiny, chill spot with big flavor. I got the Icy Spicy. It's a spicy Korean buckwheat noodles (I can handle my spice and it has a kick), topped with beef slices, a hard-boiled egg, cucumber, and pickled radish. The noodles were chewy but easy to eat, and the dish was super refreshing and satisfying. Quiet vibes, friendly service, and it feels like a cozy mom-and-pop spot. Small space, big win.
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
I love this spot! They used to be in the large shopping mall in Ktown and recently opened their own shop on 36th. The store is huge and has a bunch of seating. I come here for the cold noodles and the portion size is fairly large given the price. Still the same owners and they are very friendly and quick with service.
google avatar

Linda Y.

Yelp
I came here this restaurant with my friend and it was a hot summer day. The restaurant was quite small and I wasn't sure if there was a restroom. You order at the counter and wait for your order to be ready. We both ordered icy noodles and they that hit the spot! The bowl didn't look that big, but it was quite filling. I'll have to come back again to try more of their other dishes.

Yelp
Ambiance: 5/5 This was located inside a small food court. It is crowded but still a cute place to visit. Service: 5/5 Food came out promptly and you have the option for dining in or taking out. Food: 4/5 We got the Icy Cold Noodles. The broth was sweet, slightly sour, and umami. It was very refreshing.
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
Decent place for fast casual korean food. The portions are huge but I wished there was more meat to noodle ratio.
google avatar

Lawrence S.

Yelp
I'm happy Noona moved to it's new location it feels like a Saturday night in here. Old school tables like it's the mid 00's. K pop playing from the speakers. Friendly young staff that's very helpful with picking something to eat. The seafood ramen bowl is plentiful and tasty.
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
new go-to naengmyeon spot! not mind-blowingly good but definitely checks all the boxes for what ive been craving: noodles are chewy, broth is icy, mustard offered, and topped with korean pear. the spicy version definitely has a kick and i preferred the normal. i plan to return to try their kalguksu but might just end up getting the naengmyeon again.
google avatar

Alex H.

Yelp
Swung by for a quick bite and thought this was a great midtown find. This was my first time trying naengmyun or 'icy spicy soup'. The noodles stuck together a bit but the flavors were wonderful and I loved the cold broth. A very brown dish, it tastes much more flavorful than it looks. It hit a craving I didn't even know I had. Noona is fast casual counter service so you bus your own table. Bathroom was clean. Tight space during crowded times most likely but I loved the fresh flowers on the tables.
google avatar

Dallas E.

Yelp
Had Pho here last year. It was in the little incubator in Korea town. Some of the best Pho I've ever had. Now they are located in their own space a few blocks north on 36th. Pho is still #1, and great for Celiac.
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
To be honest, I'm disappointed every time I come here. The ramen options look soooo good in the pictures but they just don't taste how you want them to. Ingredients are boring, service is fine, flavor is never what i'm expecting. I haven't tried much of the menu but so far I must've ordered wrong because I've been extremely unhappy. Tastes more like bland soup than quality ramen (prices are higher than I would like for this cafeteria style meal)

Yelp
I stopped by Noona Noodles in the Koreatown Food Gallery and ordered their Soo Jae Bi wide noodle soup with chicken. You can pick your protein. This was a crowded Sunday afternoon in the food hall and Noona Noodles tucked into the back right corner was no different. This collagen soup ran around sixteen dollars and, in take out mode, comes with the noodles and kimchi packed separately. Despite the crowd, Noona Noodles took around fifteen minutes to prepare this soup. All the businesses give you a buzzer to let you know when your food is ready. The customer facing people working there are very nice. The soup was good when I got home. It is savory and gthe collagen broth is rich. They are generous with the noodles and the chicken. It is a substantial serving and should satisfy any appetite. This is a good soup if you are under the weather. There are the onions in there along with the kimchi. It's not spicy and some people may find the flavor a bit wanting, but Noona has other offerings with heightened spice levels. This is good comfort food at a decent price that will satisfy. Three good stars!
google avatar

Sarah Y.

Yelp
Got the icy noodles and the first item on the menu (started with a M). It was in the food court on the right. Cold icy noodles were ok, there were 2 small pieces of beef that were very overcooked. Otherwise, it was just noodles, cucumber, one egg, and Daikon. Very refreshing for hot weather. The other bowl was hot and also quite refreshing, lots of veggies and flat noodles. Overall great place to eat for a quick simple meal.
google avatar

Payton R.

Yelp
Omg this place is amazing!!! We loved it. The dumplings and bulgogi beef were the best.
google avatar

Jennie K.

Yelp
The kalguksu serving was pretty huge and it was good! Great for a cold day! The ramen tasted a little too artificial like instant ramen so I wouldn't say it's worth the price. The food court is quite busy but we found a seat in a few minutes! Great for a quick stop to eat in K-town with other options around!
google avatar

Karen Y.

Yelp
Located inside Food Gallery in Ktown, Noona Noodles has some good soup, stew and ramen! You order at the counter, get a buzzer and wait for the treats! The shop owner is very nice and the cashier is pretty quick. Always tip a $1 for their packing of food. Prices at Food Gallery has increased but not ridiculous and is still affordable. I've tried their fried dumplings before but wasn't a huge fan bc it was overly fried and greasy. But lately I've tried their "Icy" - which is the cold noodle.., and I enjoyed it! Hits the stop list right. Love they give you so many sliced radish which compliments the buckwheat noodles and vinegary cold stock. Especially for such hot weather in NYC. I wish they cut the noodles up before packaging the takeout... cuz by the time I get back to my office, it was difficult to undo the noodles... so you pretty much have to chow down - face down to the bowl and chew carefully not to splash your own face.
google avatar

Shirley M.

Yelp
I got the cold noodle and it was indeed icy. The noodle came in a huge bowl with beef, radish, cucumber, vinegar, mustard, and icy chunks. Definitely recommend for a hot and humid day.

Rosa M.

Yelp
We went here today and ordered the two vegan dishes on the menu. On the very first bite, it was clear something was wrong. My dish was served cold and the tofu was like a sponge soaked in oil. My partner's dish had a strong smell and taste similar to animal fat and was also extremely oily. We told the server immediately, before eating any more. No one apologized. No one asked what was wrong with the food. No one offered to remake the dishes or provide any help. We were simply told to speak with the manager. When I came back to speak with the manager, she was extremely rude and dismissive. She said it was just "our taste" and refused to do anything. The attitude was unprofessional and disrespectful. This wasn't a matter of taste -- the food was not edible and there was zero effort to address the issue. Very disappointing experience. I do not recommend this place.
google avatar

Evelyn N.

Yelp
They open LATE in the night! We were feeling a little peckish after a Knicks game. I wanted something warm and soothing. Maybe because it was almost closing time? But the shrimp tempura udon I ordered did NOT hit. The broth was suuuuper salty. The shrimp tempura was soggy when it came out and I picked it up right away when the buzzer went off. I'd be open to try other things on their menu or another kiosk.
google avatar

Julia Y.

Yelp
Stopped in for dinner and ordered the kimchi fried rice at the "regular" spice level for my son, who usually tolerates spicy food quite well. However, after just one bite, he was in tears and unable to eat anything else. It was that painfully spicy. I've had many versions of kimchi fried rice before, and this was by far the spiciest I've ever encountered labeled as "regular" spice. It was completely inedible. I brought the dish back to the counter and explained the situation, including that my son was in pain after a single bite. I politely requested a refund, but the restaurant refused. I was very disappointed by the lack of empathy and customer service. On top of that, the seating is extremely cramped--so tight that customers can only move through the restaurant single file. Overall, this was an awful dining experience. We won't be returning or recommending this place to anyone.
google avatar

Racquel E.

Yelp
While in K-Town, we stumbled upon a food court with a variety of Korean restaurants. It was the perfect spot for a quick lunch before our next city tour. I enjoyed the Knife-cut noodle soup in a rich bone broth with seasonal veggies. The food court had limited seating on the first floor, so we sat at a community table. There's also plenty of seating available on the second level.
google avatar

Zerin T.

Yelp
was very sad when this store front closed in the food hall but thrilled they reopened as my husband and I LOVE their naengmyun. We plan to visit often for a quick bite!
google avatar

Jayden N.

Yelp
When Noona was originally in Food Gallery I really wanted to try their cold noodles. So I came and brought a friend to try their food. I was really disappointed in their Icy Spicy. It gave a flavor profile of being too spicy to the point it numbed my tastebuds. Couldn't enjoy the meal. Service was fine and the environment was really like a hole in the wall place.
google avatar

Shawn H.

Yelp
This was excellent. The K-Rage, Icy Spicy, and sticky crispy dumplings (with rice cakes added) were all outstanding, and all three had a decent amount of spice. The Icy Spicy was probably my favorite, but I'd be thrilled to get all three of these again.

Tara R.

Yelp
Happy to see this place moved over to its own space and now w an extended menu! Their seafood pepper bomb was great, I tried their pork belly version today which was also delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
One reason we love coming to NYC is that there is a little bit of everything. It's a big melting pot of all cultures and their unique cuisines. With that, they bring their ethnic foods and open up some amazing places to eat. Don't get me wrong, as Hawaii is also like that minus some ethnic foods, but NYC has a ton more options as it should being more populated. With that said, we remember an article that came out reviewing Noona Noodles in the New Yorker saying that they loved this mother daughter restaurant. So we looked it up on Yelp and it seems our fellow Yelpers also like this place too. Located in Food Gallery 32 probably named as it's located on 32nd street in particular 11 W 32nd St. Noona Noodles is located in the back right corner. It's where you will find this hidden gem of classic Asian inspired dishes. Because the weather is cooler than back at home and we didn't sleep on the plane we decided to get the Chicken Noodle Soup (good for the body), and Yaki Udon just because heard the flavors are off the hook. The better half and I both agree that the Chicken Noodle Soup broth was very clean tasting. The veggies are really fresh and the chicken was very soft and cooked throughout. While I like a lot of sauce in my Yaki Udon, the better half likes it less sauce. But it was my dish so two thumbs up in my book. Both dishes were huge. I had to tap out with a fourth left. If we get to come back, I want to try their okonomiyaki. Yes, okonomiyaki!!! Thanks Noona Noodles for an awesome meal.
google avatar

Doreen M.

Yelp
Great selection of noodle dishes. Try the icy noodles for something different. The kimchi pancake is a tasty appetizer.
google avatar

Nic D.

Yelp
First time here...Cowboy ramen is a must have! Great flavor, nice portion. Will be back again to explore the menu. Excited to try the neang myun.
google avatar

Vicky R.

Yelp
We stopped by here a couple times to use up a gift card from family. It was absolutely delicious. We got the spicy seafood pepper bomb and gyozas. The pepper bomb is so amazing. It is very spicy, flavorful, and generous with seafood. Don't forget to buy a drink to go with it because you will definitely need it to cool the spices. The gyozas are crispy and tasted the best when fresh.
google avatar

Evelyn W.

Yelp
The food was pretty good. I'm just bombarded by how less noodles they gave for almost a $20 plate... It's my first time trying pepper-bomb udon noodles with pork belly, I ordered mine mild spicy. The service was great though, the ladies at the front were both super kind and sweet. This food spot is pretty small and has limited seating since it is in a mini food court.
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
Fast service and good food. Exactly what was needed after a long day of traveling. I got the udon and it was delicious. The flavor was good and the noodles were just right. Be sure to stop by if you are near Korea town.
google avatar

Soyeon K.

Yelp
found this place on tiktok looking for a quick bite of kalguksu in nyc. i love the fast casual vibe of just ordering at counter and picking up myself since i didn't have time for a full service. the noodles came in a stainless steel bowl which i love and reminds me of cafeterias in korea. the noodles and soup were yummy, but the potato/veggie wasn't as tender as i liked, but no complaints! they gave me a cup of ice for my drink and it was so yummy and refreshing, highly reccomend the peach assam tea. bathroom was good, one issue is no air conditioner but it felt like a valid korean spot with no ac but feels good to sweat and have soup.
google avatar

Monica L.

Yelp
As a Korean, I take my Korean food pretty seriously. We stopped by because we were starving and saw there was seating available. We ordered the cold noodles and the seafood stir fry. They were just okay. The cold noodles had a slight dish soap aftertaste, which was off-putting, and the seafood stir fry was a bit too sweet for my liking.

Sunhee C.

Yelp
I ordered the seafood sujaebi and seafood kalguksu. The kalguksu portion was enough for one person, but I was surprised that the sujaebi only had about six pieces in the soup. I paid $25 for it, which felt way too expensive for such a small portion. Very disappointing -- they really need to improve both the portion size and service.
google avatar

Yelp
Food: 4/5 Service: 5/5 This was my first time visiting Food Gallery 32, and my friend recommended Noona's Noodles. We got the Chilled Soba, Fried Dumplings, and Sweet Heat Salad (jjolmyeon). All of which came out about 15-20 minutes after ordering. The soba was great, and my friend liked the fried dumplings. The jjolmyeon was good but is INCREDIBLY spicy (which I knew going into it). It's a huge bowl that I got ¼ into. This is good for people with higher spice tolerance and have a large appetite.
