Intensely Flavorful Soups, at Noona Noodles | The New Yorker

"Over bubbly-skinned, fried mini mandoo , filled with juicy ground pork, and enormous steel bowls of naengmyeon , a cold noodle soup, my friend and I were pondering what makes Noona Noodles, a tiny stall in a multistory food court in Manhattan’s Koreatown, so special, and we agreed: it was sonmat." - Hannah Goldfield

It’s my noodle shop, so I have to give it a shout out. It’s the best. Even when I’m not there, I’ll order via uber. My mom’s collagen-rich bone broth in the kalguksu (knife cut noodles) and soojaebi (handpulled noodles) does wonders for my skin. Our family loves fistfuls of vegetables in our soup so you always get the good stuff. We’re in a food court in k-town so the people watching is next level.

TL;DR: Tucked away just blocks from the heart of K-town, this cozy, unassuming spot delivers with heaping portions of its hearty yet elevated Korean comfort food. We walked in on a Saturday afternoon right before the dinner rush quickly took up every table. There's no fuss or frills, with noodles being served in massive, gleaming stainless steel bowls on plastic trays, a sight that will surely transport Koreans back to younger years in Korea. We ordered the seafood pajeon (Korean pancakes), boneless chicken bites, Icy Spicy noodles and Cowboy ramen to share. The Icy Spicy noodles were note perfect for a humid summer night, sweet, tangy and spicy (shout out to the extra care put in to pre-cut the noodles) in a refreshingly icy broth. The Cowboy ramen, piled high with a generous portion of Korean BBQ kalbi (short ribs) and topped with a slice of pepper jack cheese and an egg fried over easy, was a rich, indulgent and comforting experience unlike any other ramen I've had in the city. All this to say, in a city where Korean noodles are now being charged $30+ and have become so avant garde that they bear little resemblance to the $2.50 snacks I used to get after school in Seoul, Noona Noodles stands out by nailing the familiar while still innovating to create exciting dishes. We will be back for more!

Google
Authentic Korean food! You can tell the owner/chef took her time to prepare each dish and it was a wonderful experience. The soup base was great, noodles/udons are cooked just right, service was courteous and restaurant was clean and well organized. Highly recommend the Jjam Bbong. One of our favourite places in New York City to satisfy Korean food cravings.

Google
I didn’t have high expectations when I walked in but the space was clean, and wow the portions were truly huge. Very worth the price too— they do not hold back on the ingredients. Very great place for a cheap but hearty meal. I hope they add more dishes to the menu so I came come all the time.

Coming here is an experience to say the least! It is packed! This stall is pricey, but I guess the portion reflects it — it is massive! Finding a place to sit when it is busy is hard, but totally worth it for a fun time. The food here is great, but I would like to try something else because I feel like these aren’t what the stall is known for. The service was also not special, and slightly aggressive, but they pump out your food super fast, and it is really tasty.

Google
I had an amazing time at Noona Noodles' new location! The atmosphere was lively, and the staff was incredibly friendly. The Cowboy Ramen is a must-try; the smell was absolutely enticing! With huge portions of delicious noodles and tender meats, it’s a dish you won’t want to miss. I can't wait to return for more!

Google
One of my new favorite Asian staples when I visit NYC. Fast service and food comes out hot and nicely plated. Portions are LARGE and feel like a great value, especially for Manhattan. My favorite has been the pepper bomb for the spicy flavor, but I tried the bulgogi ramen today and it was also very delicious and filling. Their new location has a much chiller vibe. Can’t wait to try the rest of the menu!

Google
Nice spot for different Korean noodle dishes in a casual setting. This is more of a spot for a quick bite than to go for the ambience since it is in a food court. Went with the udon and the broth, noodles, and shrimp tempura were perfectly cooked. The egg was hard boiled instead of poached though which was a little let done. Flavors were good otherwise and the workers were friendly.

Google
Two of us are gluten free and vegan, and the cashier was friendly and recommended food options and alternatives for the food. We both got ramen, the kimchi and spicy noodle. The flavor was amazing, like the kimchi ramen with rice noodle sub it was exactly the sort of spicy noodle dish you want to have. Deep flavor, good portions, the bowls are good quality like the actual container they are large and metal. The dishes are on the end of being closer to 20 dollars a person including the appetizers.

Yelp
Swung by for a quick bite and thought this was a great midtown find. This was my first time trying naengmyun or 'icy spicy soup'. The noodles stuck together a bit but the flavors were wonderful and I loved the cold broth. A very brown dish, it tastes much more flavorful than it looks. It hit a craving I didn't even know I had. Noona is fast casual counter service so you bus your own table. Bathroom was clean. Tight space during crowded times most likely but I loved the fresh flowers on the tables.

Yelp
Stopped in for dinner and ordered the kimchi fried rice at the "regular" spice level for my son, who usually tolerates spicy food quite well. However, after just one bite, he was in tears and unable to eat anything else. It was that painfully spicy. I've had many versions of kimchi fried rice before, and this was by far the spiciest I've ever encountered labeled as "regular" spice. It was completely inedible. I brought the dish back to the counter and explained the situation, including that my son was in pain after a single bite. I politely requested a refund, but the restaurant refused. I was very disappointed by the lack of empathy and customer service. On top of that, the seating is extremely cramped--so tight that customers can only move through the restaurant single file. Overall, this was an awful dining experience. We won't be returning or recommending this place to anyone.

Yelp
My return to Noona Noodles came with a pleasant surprise - they had moved out of the food court a few blocks away and into their own dedicated space. Otherwise, the menu appeared relatively unchanged. Given the heat and humidity, I went with the icy noodles / naengmyeon ($15). I paid at the counter and heard my order called out within five minutes. The cold noodles came with a half hard-boiled egg, cucumber, radish, and a generous heap of noodles in a chilled broth with floating sheets of ice (easily breakable and not an obstacle to eating). The broth resembled the sweet dipping sauce often used for burdock and onion banchan or the marinade for japchae - soy sauce based with a notable sweetness. I wasn't sure if I was meant to drink it or simply use it to coat the noodles. Personally, the flavor profile didn't quite suit my palate, but I think it would work well for those who enjoy savory dishes with a sweet edge. That said, it was still a refreshing and reasonably priced dish.

Yelp
I got the cold noodle and it was indeed icy. The noodle came in a huge bowl with beef, radish, cucumber, vinegar, mustard, and icy chunks. Definitely recommend for a hot and humid day.

Yelp
I'm happy Noona moved to it's new location it feels like a Saturday night in here. Old school tables like it's the mid 00's. K pop playing from the speakers. Friendly young staff that's very helpful with picking something to eat. The seafood ramen bowl is plentiful and tasty.

Yelp
This spot started off as a hole in the wall in a food hall in K-town and my friend cried legitimate tears when she saw this placed had been removed. We then found out it's now a new restaurant with its own location in K town (rightfully deserved), according to my friend who raves about their okinomoyami (which is vegetarian) and their spicy ramen noodles. I got their icy spicy since it was a hot day and it was delicious! Though I wish that the price was lower for the amount you get and that it had shaved pear instead of radish, but it was still delicious! Really good spot for classic Korean noodle dishes.

Yelp
Ambiance: 5/5 This was located inside a small food court. It is crowded but still a cute place to visit. Service: 5/5 Food came out promptly and you have the option for dining in or taking out. Food: 4/5 We got the Icy Cold Noodles. The broth was sweet, slightly sour, and umami. It was very refreshing.

Yelp
When Noona was originally in Food Gallery I really wanted to try their cold noodles. So I came and brought a friend to try their food. I was really disappointed in their Icy Spicy. It gave a flavor profile of being too spicy to the point it numbed my tastebuds. Couldn't enjoy the meal. Service was fine and the environment was really like a hole in the wall place.

Yelp
I stopped by Noona Noodles in the Koreatown Food Gallery and ordered their Soo Jae Bi wide noodle soup with chicken. You can pick your protein. This was a crowded Sunday afternoon in the food hall and Noona Noodles tucked into the back right corner was no different. This collagen soup ran around sixteen dollars and, in take out mode, comes with the noodles and kimchi packed separately. Despite the crowd, Noona Noodles took around fifteen minutes to prepare this soup. All the businesses give you a buzzer to let you know when your food is ready. The customer facing people working there are very nice. The soup was good when I got home. It is savory and gthe collagen broth is rich. They are generous with the noodles and the chicken. It is a substantial serving and should satisfy any appetite. This is a good soup if you are under the weather. There are the onions in there along with the kimchi. It's not spicy and some people may find the flavor a bit wanting, but Noona has other offerings with heightened spice levels. This is good comfort food at a decent price that will satisfy. Three good stars!

Yelp
To be honest, I'm disappointed every time I come here. The ramen options look soooo good in the pictures but they just don't taste how you want them to. Ingredients are boring, service is fine, flavor is never what i'm expecting. I haven't tried much of the menu but so far I must've ordered wrong because I've been extremely unhappy. Tastes more like bland soup than quality ramen (prices are higher than I would like for this cafeteria style meal)
google avatar

Jennie K.

Yelp
The kalguksu serving was pretty huge and it was good! Great for a cold day! The ramen tasted a little too artificial like instant ramen so I wouldn't say it's worth the price. The food court is quite busy but we found a seat in a few minutes! Great for a quick stop to eat in K-town with other options around!
google avatar

Yelp
Located inside Food Gallery in Ktown, Noona Noodles has some good soup, stew and ramen! You order at the counter, get a buzzer and wait for the treats! The shop owner is very nice and the cashier is pretty quick. Always tip a $1 for their packing of food. Prices at Food Gallery has increased but not ridiculous and is still affordable. I've tried their fried dumplings before but wasn't a huge fan bc it was overly fried and greasy. But lately I've tried their "Icy" - which is the cold noodle.., and I enjoyed it! Hits the stop list right. Love they give you so many sliced radish which compliments the buckwheat noodles and vinegary cold stock. Especially for such hot weather in NYC. I wish they cut the noodles up before packaging the takeout... cuz by the time I get back to my office, it was difficult to undo the noodles... so you pretty much have to chow down - face down to the bowl and chew carefully not to splash your own face.

Yelp
Food: Freaking AMAZING. I come here only on bad days or when i can spare the dough. Its worth every penny. Food came faster than expected. I ordered JJam BBong like always. Ive tried their Icy & Icy Spicy which is my go to in the summer. Service: Always hospitable and immaculate. Dont forget to tip 20% or more!! Ambience: calm music, recognized a few songs from my playlist!! Hell yeah. I will always come here so long as i can walk live and breathe!
google avatar

Yelp
Unfortunately, a little underwhelming. I ordered the Icy Noodles. It was too acidic and sweet for my liking. I also wish there was more toppings. I'm curious to come back and try other items on the menu.

Yelp
A little hidden gem in the 32nd street food court. We chose this on our walk back to James Nomad because it had gluten free options. The Pho is safe as it comes with rice noodles. We skipped the side of sweet teriyaki which because we just weren't sure (soy sauce) and didn't ask before leaving. We did add sirachi in the broth, to give it some kick. The girl tsking orders was very helpful. She said they have gluten free noodle options if you needed a ramen sub. We did get a a gluten Bulgogi Ramen as well for those that can eat gluten. It was also nothing short of awesome. I think we are going back to the food court tomorrow to sample more things, and maybe not just from Noona. More to come!

Yelp
They open LATE in the night! We were feeling a little peckish after a Knicks game. I wanted something warm and soothing. Maybe because it was almost closing time? But the shrimp tempura udon I ordered did NOT hit. The broth was suuuuper salty. The shrimp tempura was soggy when it came out and I picked it up right away when the buzzer went off. I'd be open to try other things on their menu or another kiosk.

Yelp
First time here...Cowboy ramen is a must have! Great flavor, nice portion. Will be back again to explore the menu. Excited to try the neang myun.

Yelp
While in K-Town, we stumbled upon a food court with a variety of Korean restaurants. It was the perfect spot for a quick lunch before our next city tour. I enjoyed the Knife-cut noodle soup in a rich bone broth with seasonal veggies. The food court had limited seating on the first floor, so we sat at a community table. There's also plenty of seating available on the second level.
google avatar

Shawn H.

Yelp
This was excellent. The K-Rage, Icy Spicy, and sticky crispy dumplings (with rice cakes added) were all outstanding, and all three had a decent amount of spice. The Icy Spicy was probably my favorite, but I'd be thrilled to get all three of these again.

Yelp
One reason we love coming to NYC is that there is a little bit of everything. It's a big melting pot of all cultures and their unique cuisines. With that, they bring their ethnic foods and open up some amazing places to eat. Don't get me wrong, as Hawaii is also like that minus some ethnic foods, but NYC has a ton more options as it should being more populated. With that said, we remember an article that came out reviewing Noona Noodles in the New Yorker saying that they loved this mother daughter restaurant. So we looked it up on Yelp and it seems our fellow Yelpers also like this place too. Located in Food Gallery 32 probably named as it's located on 32nd street in particular 11 W 32nd St. Noona Noodles is located in the back right corner. It's where you will find this hidden gem of classic Asian inspired dishes. Because the weather is cooler than back at home and we didn't sleep on the plane we decided to get the Chicken Noodle Soup (good for the body), and Yaki Udon just because heard the flavors are off the hook. The better half and I both agree that the Chicken Noodle Soup broth was very clean tasting. The veggies are really fresh and the chicken was very soft and cooked throughout. While I like a lot of sauce in my Yaki Udon, the better half likes it less sauce. But it was my dish so two thumbs up in my book. Both dishes were huge. I had to tap out with a fourth left. If we get to come back, I want to try their okonomiyaki. Yes, okonomiyaki!!! Thanks Noona Noodles for an awesome meal.
google avatar

Vicky R.

Yelp
We stopped by here a couple times to use up a gift card from family. It was absolutely delicious. We got the spicy seafood pepper bomb and gyozas. The pepper bomb is so amazing. It is very spicy, flavorful, and generous with seafood. Don't forget to buy a drink to go with it because you will definitely need it to cool the spices. The gyozas are crispy and tasted the best when fresh.
google avatar

Evelyn W.

Yelp
The food was pretty good. I'm just bombarded by how less noodles they gave for almost a $20 plate... It's my first time trying pepper-bomb udon noodles with pork belly, I ordered mine mild spicy. The service was great though, the ladies at the front were both super kind and sweet. This food spot is pretty small and has limited seating since it is in a mini food court.
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
Fast service and good food. Exactly what was needed after a long day of traveling. I got the udon and it was delicious. The flavor was good and the noodles were just right. Be sure to stop by if you are near Korea town.

Yelp
Got the icy noodles and the first item on the menu (started with a M). It was in the food court on the right. Cold icy noodles were ok, there were 2 small pieces of beef that were very overcooked. Otherwise, it was just noodles, cucumber, one egg, and Daikon. Very refreshing for hot weather. The other bowl was hot and also quite refreshing, lots of veggies and flat noodles. Overall great place to eat for a quick simple meal.

Sai Y.

Yelp
Food not particularly good, actually a bit bad. Not really a sit down restaurant, order at the front and sit.
google avatar

Alanna V.

Yelp
Food: 4/5 Service: 5/5 This was my first time visiting Food Gallery 32, and my friend recommended Noona's Noodles. We got the Chilled Soba, Fried Dumplings, and Sweet Heat Salad (jjolmyeon). All of which came out about 15-20 minutes after ordering. The soba was great, and my friend liked the fried dumplings. The jjolmyeon was good but is INCREDIBLY spicy (which I knew going into it). It's a huge bowl that I got ¼ into. This is good for people with higher spice tolerance and have a large appetite.
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
It's a food court setting, so there are multiple options. I'm happy with choosing this spot. The springs rolls tasted fresh and the ramen was good. The staff who were working were very nice!

Jung S.

Yelp
Service was very friendly and nice. The food is average. If you want authentic homemade korean this is not the place. Dumplings were not homemade and the sujaebi was also not homemade. It was disappointed. great for an average quick craving fix or if you haven't have homemade korean food to compare.
google avatar

Kelly W.

Yelp
I got the chili soup and it's the most disgusting soup I've ever tasted. It just tastes as if you're biting into a charcoal but somehow it's sour??? It had a fishy taste and it never left my pallet. I made a complaint and I was told by the owner "if you don't like it then you don't like it. It's not like I can give you McDonald's". Like wtf is actually wrong with these people?? Didn't even offer anything else to compensate for this trash ass noodle nor did she ask how they could make it better. Don't come to this place it's definitely overhyped by social media. If you want something authentic and better go eat along the ktown street.

Anon Y.

Yelp
Love this place. Only tried the kalguksu but had it few times and very hearty and comforting.
google avatar

T. G.

Yelp
Awesome spot! Used to go here when I worked in the area and want to give them the credit - pricing is reasonable and servings were generous! I used to order the Pho with chicken. Loved it! Very good! Would recommend!!! (More seating options upstairs!)
google avatar

Abdullrahman A.

Yelp
Decent ramen specially when it's cold outside. The quantity for the price is huge. Any ramen here will be a FULL meal. I got the Cowboy Ramen, which was not too weird with cheese in it. I was expecting more bold flavors, but I did miss the extra spices and soy sauce they had on the side. The service was good for me but some of my friends who ordered after took over 30 mins to get their food. The inside of this area has plenty of seats, but with a lot of people hunting for a table. It is also hotter than normal inside, which can get a bit uncomfortable. Overall, it's a nice place with a bunch of desserts and drinks around to try.
google avatar

Richard G.

Yelp
After dining here several times throughout my K-Town experiences, I had always ordered the Cowboy Ramen (highly recommend) but today I decided to try a new dish - Pepper Bomb! It was delish! The staff are always helpful and very accommodating. There are three levels to the food court. While it is Located on the 1st floor / back right, I don't ever mind taking my dish and walking upstairs to soak in the ambiance and energy of the other patrons.
google avatar

Orena W.

Yelp
Got the pork ramen. It came with a generous amount of pork. About 6 pieces. The pieces of pork were really good. The ramen was kind of over cooked and not bouncy. The broth was also not very flavorful. It was okay, but I wouldn't get it again. They were quick with service though. Mayne try some of their other menu items. Don't get their ramen. It's not worth it. The portions were very big however.
google avatar

Gloria X.

Yelp
I'm not sure if I just don't like naengmyun or if theirs wasn't great since it was my first time having it but I was underwhelmed. It might be that I ordered it without ice since I don't like ice or maybe it's just not the dish for me. Only had 2 measly thin pieces of beef, a handful of cucumber, and half an egg with a mountain of noodles. Broth was weirdly sweet. I wouldn't get it again. The cashier was very nice!
google avatar

Lauren F.

Yelp
They have some vegan options and their noodles and dumplings are tasty. Their sauces are spicy and kimchi is very spicy. My friends love their seafood soup.

Jasmine H.

Yelp
me and some friends went dressed as elves and fairies yester and the staff was so nice to us and gave nice compliments. The food was AMAZING! we will definitely be back.
google avatar

Sandy X.

Yelp
This place is always my go to spot inside Food Gallery 32 for authentic korean noodles. I love coming here for their icy cold noodles and jjambbong (spicy seafood noodle soup). They're super consistent with their quality and quantity which I appreciate. The times that I have been here, it's always been busy and packed so be prepared to wait 15 minutes or more for your food. During that time, I like to find a table and wait for the pager to go off.
google avatar

Jessica E.

Yelp
I'm still thinking about this salad and have already tried to recreate it myself. The cold noodles and cold bowl were just what I needed on a recent visit to New York on a sweltering hot day - it was so refreshing! The dressing was amazing too!
google avatar

Ashley F.

Yelp
I stopped into Noona Noodles on a weekday after work. It's located inside of a bigger food hall with multiple vendors, all of which share a central seating area. You place your order at their counter and receive a buzzer while it cooks. I recommend using this time to snag seats, as it was pretty busy when I visited and seats are limited. I ordered the Frat Boy noodles and it took about 10 minutes from my order until it was ready. The dish was huge and full of contents - noodles, cheese, veggies, and a massive hot dog. It tasted AMAZING too. Noona noodles makes for a great option if you are in KTown and want something inexpensive and quick. Recommend giving it a try!
google avatar

Melody M.

Yelp
Was really craving some naengmyeon and needed it asap. Ended up getting some from here with low expectations and was pleasant surprised. It was very flavorful and quickly out. Seating can be hard to find because of the area the spot is in so you'd need to take it to go or have someone get a seat for you.
google avatar

Yo-yo D.

Yelp
Went her for the first time located on 31st street between 6 and 7th Avenue. I believe they call this place Korean Town its was interesting . The crowd was very young mostly Asian cuisine but there was folks of all ages and nationalities that's what makes NYC so dope. I had ramen for the 1st time and it was alright. I won't say I'm a fan but it wasn't bad either.

Akshita A.

Yelp
Good portion sizes and super yummy! I had the #1 and it wasn't too spicy. The place has a fun energy too!

Yelp
Great mom and daughter food place inside the Korean food court in the heart of Koreatown (Food Gallery 32) on 32nd street, the Mecca of Korean food. I loved talking to the owner who is so sweet and friendly and loves to provide great Korean food that is a mix of fusion Asian but also caters to authentic Korean foods and desires. The portions are amazing bc for $15-17 ish you will get enough food to fill the belly and have leftovers. I always appreciate that bc people want to know that their hard earned money is worth something and that you can enjoy food after a long day of work. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
짬뽕 (jjambbong) is my favorite Korean food, and I've tried very good 짬뽕 all around the tri-state area and in Korea Daegu. the 짬뽕 at Noona Noodles is INSANE and surpasses the taste of other very impressive 짬뽕s that I've tried. If you didn't give them a 5-star, I recommend you get their spicier noodles and you'll definitely change your mind. The noodles are chewy and super fresh which I didn't expect from a small restaurant in a food court, the broth is SPICAYY only for the real ones who can handle it (I think they have milder broths for the babies haha), and they overload the noodles with enoki mushrooms, bok choi or cabbage, and all sorts of seafood. The portions are huge so come hungry. Brought my mom and brother here today and they love the food too. It's like when you bring home a boyfriend and your family approves of him; I introduced my family to Noona Noods and they were very impressed :P. This place reminds me of the street markets in Korea that don't hold back on taste and portions, and make sure you leave with your belly about to explode. Thanks Noona Noodles for being there for me when I have my hangovers, lunch breaks, and long excursions in the city.
google avatar

Kamath V.

Yelp
The place is situated in a food court of sorts. Love the flavor. Pretty authentic. Service is you pay for it and pick it up, fast food type. Tip: Don't tip unless food is brought to the table. Reply to owner: tenets*... it's your job to pay them. Not ours.
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
I love coming to this food court solely for Noona Noodles. Their jjamppong (spicy noodle soup) is my go-to order, and it always hits the spot. The bowl is huge with so much noodles and seafood, and the hot spicy broth is so good every time. It's nice to kick back and enjoy this jjamppong when I'm in the area and have a short 30 min to grab a quick, gourmet meal. I definitely recommend coming here!
