Normandy Farm Bakery/One Broad Owner Turns Himself Into Police Custody | Eater Carolinas

"After an alleged incident on Friday, October 26 in which owner Mike Ray purportedly exposed himself to a crowd at a public event, Ray surrendered to Charleston police on October 31 and was charged with indecent exposure. He stepped back from day-to-day leadership on October 29, and longtime collaborator Ben Johnson — who has been involved with the businesses since 2007 — was immediately named director of operations. The bakery’s products are widely distributed across Lowcountry restaurants, prompting public calls from local chefs and food-community figures for establishments to stop carrying its goods; as of the report, only one restaurant has publicly severed ties." - Erin Perkins

Mike Ray Steps Down From the Daily Operations at Normandy Farm Bakery | Eater Carolinas

"After an incident on Friday, October 26 in which the co-owner exposed himself at the Parlour: Charleston event, the co-owner removed himself from day-to-day operations and announced he is seeking counseling and is deeply sorry for his actions, apologizing to event attendees, his staff, his family, and the people of Charleston. He stated he hopes to recover and become a healthier person. Ben Johnson, who has been involved with the business since 2007, will take over as director of operations immediately." - Erin Perkins

Normandy Farm Owner Exposes Himself at Event Celebrating Female Artisans | Eater Carolinas

"Co-owned by Mike Ray, who has long been the public face of the businesses, this bakery has been thrust into controversy after Ray exposed himself at a private event celebrating female artisans. He has called it a “horrible lapse in judgement,” issued private and public apologies, and described the act as an attempted bit of irreverent humor that made people uncomfortable. While some colleagues in the food and beverage community have offered support, others—most prominently James Beard–nominated chef Cynthia Wong—have publicly urged a boycott of his products (including pastries and bread supplied to restaurants), arguing that continuing to spend money at his businesses enables unacceptable behavior and harms staff and patrons." - Erin Perkins

It was incredibly delicious that I had breakfast twice. The first time, I had a ham and cheese croissant, and the second time, I indulged in an apple bear claw. So, maybe it was breakfast and dessert, rather than breakfast twice. It was fantastic, and it won’t be my last visit.

Google
Delicious Lunch Sandwiches! Very Good Bread! Thank You

Michael T.

Google
The place is like under renovation or only opening half the space for some reason and lacks any seating, but the sandwiches were amazing, and a great price! The coffee was fine but the sandwiches are definitely the star. Probably the best focaccia bread I’ve ever had! *UPDATE* went back in November and renovations were done, still a small space and quite crowded, but worth it!

Google
Unfortunately this place which has amazing potential is really missing the mark. The owners need to shut down for a few days and do a deep clean on the whole entire place. There are fingerprints on all glass, debris everywhere, and it’s just very obvious that cleanings and maintenance haven’t been a priority. Good siting under heat lamps at a place that is suppose to be artisanal is crazy.

Google
Laura recommended the jalapeño cheddar bagel and it was delicious- toasted to perfection and topped with the most velvety smooth cream cheese spread; will definitely be back!

You know that you are in a working bakery when they have a "wanted" sign in the window asking for help coming in at 4 am. A cozy place that smells, looks, and feels like a bakery. Country Batard, croissants, and sandwiches looked fabulous and tasted so much better than anything you can buy at a grocery store. The bread has plenty of fine pores, a wonderful shape with a taste on the lighter, less sour and more wheaty side. The bread was stored after the first day in a plastic bag at room temperature and when toasted was still delicious 5 days later. The croissant was one of the largest and heaviest I ever had and good in taste. That said, I prefer smaller, more buttery and flaky croissants. I apologize for the 4 stars. Compared to grocery store bread this is at least on a 6 star level, but for decades I lived in Europe and compared to those breads, the bread was slightly overbaked and the croissant was missing lamination.

Google
Delightful and Delicious! The bacon, egg & cheddar on a pretzel bus is as yummy as it is cute! And the blueberry cheese pastry is perfection - flaky and sweet with just the right amount of crunch.

Google
This is an excellent little bakery! They never disappoint- just so consistent for years with delicious food, straightforward quick service, and cleanliness. A place to just lounge w/ a biscuit, a sandwich, really good coffee, quiche, or whatever you like from a bakery. If I can sneak in there for a bite before work I do- it starts the day right.

Yelp
We got there right before closing, so there wasn't a huge selection, but the Farmhouse loaf of bread we bought was so spot on. As you can see in the picture i provided, this isn't your average loaf of bread as it is freaking huge. The Crust on the outside was super crispy while the inside was as soft as a pillow. And the taste is amazing. The bread was perfect sopping up the soup of the claims and linguine we ate that night. This bread is so good, we will certainly go back another time, but earlier in the day to sample hopefully other great offerings

Yelp
Fast service!!! We came in last minute in a bread emergency where we needed 15 loaves of bread for the opening of our food truck. And they helped us at wholesale prices. They are great!!!! Thank you so much Normandy

Yelp
I'd give 5 stars if the woman behind the counter wasn't so incredibly unwelcoming. I stopped in yesterday for a quick bite and looked directly at her and said "Good Morning, how are you?" She turned and walked away. It's become a joke with a friend of mine anytime we go to text the other person and say "yep the girl at NF is still rude." The food is decent and there is ample seating including outdoors. Give it a try just don't expect any niceties from the lady behind the counter!
google avatar

Yelp
Best sourdough bread I've ever had!!! Customer service was great and the line moved pretty decently even though being crowded. I'll be back to try more!
google avatar

Yelp
Came in Monday Morning for some pastries, Wont be going back.Food was good(I had the Blueberry Cream Cheese Danish). Woman behind the counter was incredibly rude and unwelcoming, which ruined the entire visit. Made me feel like a nuisance just for visiting.

Yelp
The awesomest butter croissants in the area hands down There is so many options from breakfast sandwiches to pretzels to bagels, not to mention exceptionally large delicious cookies Oh and great coffee. Seating inside and out and community seating by the window. Overall, one of the best bakeries in the area. Love it!!!

Yelp
After picking up our wheelchair-bound friend for an appointment at MUSC, we wanted to stop along the way for a bite to eat. It was around 11 when we stopped in and I was hoping for breakfast sandwiches, but they were all out. It was late for breakfast, and early for lunch but I needed more than a pastry or a donut so I opted for one of the premade sandwiches in the case. I wasn't too excited about a Turkey BLT wrapped in saran wrap until she asked if I wanted the sandwich toasted and upped the quality of the sandwich by 100%. Between the warm brunch sourdough, cold ingredients, and crispy bacon, this sandwich was fantastic. I've been dreaming about going over there to get another. Definitely don't skip out on this option. We also had a quiche, pastries, and coffee. Everything was great! We were able to grab a seat outside on a beautiful morning and get the wheelchair right up to the table. As others have mentioned, I will say that the woman behind the counter wasn't rude, but also not very welcoming either. Accommodating, but almost bothered that you're there. Aside from that it was an amazing experience and I took home a baguette that was phenomenal. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Smells great inside, food looks delicious but I just came for coffee. Ordered a vanilla latte and it tasted like milk. Very weak coffee.

Yelp
A little on the expensive end, and the cashier was pretty rude. Interrupted me when I was ordering two biscuits (I was supposed to grab them off the hot bar) and then asked twice if I was ready to order- the cashier didn't have a smile or give recommendations etc. At 11:30 the bakery was sold out of almost all pastries, so keep that in mind when timing your visit, and their sandwiches were extremely dry and basic. Had the chicken salad on sourdough and there was no seasoning. The two breakfast biscuits I got were pretty small- the total for these three items was about $18. The biscuits would be a 'side' not a full breakfast, even for an on-the-go meal. Glad I went to a local place, but that's all I can really say -!@&5 it.

Yelp
Great sandwiches, bread is amazing. Quiet environment, would go back. Only problem was the bathroom was as broken
google avatar

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
I've tried this bakery three times when on Folly Road, and each time the items have been over cooked/burnt, and almost no ham in the ham and Swiss croissant. The cashier does not greet you, meet your gaze or thank you. Three strikes, so that's it for me. I'll stick with Saveurs du Monde downtown.

Yelp
We had lunch at Normandy Farms yesterday and it was okay but not great. We arrived at noon and there were only 4 types of sandwiches to choose from. We had the tomato, mozzarella on baguette and it was good, but the tomatoes did not seem to be too fresh. The place seems to be falling apart, and not very clean. In addition, there was a "Restrooms out of order" sign so going to the restroom was not an option. I used to really love this place and am hoping yesterday was not the norm.
google avatar

Opal D.

Yelp
By mid-morning there were very few pastries available; there were doughnuts, loaves of bread, bagels, sandwiches, and some dry looking muffins. I went to the one downtown and right before closing they had a better selection.
google avatar

William S.

Yelp
Great prices and wonderful staff. Small shop with tables inside and out. Great people and dog watching. Solid bread and worth the carbs. My iced coffee came with a paper straw. Good looking out for the environment

Yelp
I can't believe I had no clue this place existed but I am sure glad I've found it now! I was craving a bagel and used the Yelp App to find bagels near me -- voila -- Normandy Farms! I've actually never driven past Earthfare in the Windermere Shopping Center so it was a bit of an adventure for me (lots of stores to check out back there!). There is plenty of parking available near the bakery. I walked in to see the cute little display with baked goods, bread, yogurt parfaits, etc. I ordered a yogurt parfait and a bagel with cream cheese which they had toasted and ready for me in just a couple of minutes. Everything was tasty and super cute; I will definitely be returning!

Yelp
Best bread in town. Pretty rough customer service. The owner is cool. The ppl working behind the counter act like you're doing them a favor and they're pissed about it.

Yelp
We always get their Sour Dough, not sliced, because we like to cut it in fourths ourselves and then slice for stews, soups, toast, etc, to our own thickness wants at the moment. Their slicer, if you ask for it, is mostly too thin for our likes so far. Fourths, freeze, thaw, cut to appropriate needs, perfect. When we go to the Bay Area, we get sourdough bread at every chance possible. This sourdough comes the closest to SF sour that I have found yet. The baguettes have a thick crust, which is perfect for many wonts, but if you are looking for a baguette to make a Bahn mi, this is is too hearty for that. I have had their Italian premade sandwich, and found that delicious. Bear Claws also excellent, Espressos used to be a dollar so even if I didn't need the jolt, I couldn't resist. I think they are $2 now, so I can resist, but they are the real deal, I am an occasional patron, so don't get touchy feely with the person behind the bar, The two people I have dealt with there are all business, and that is OK with me. I appreciate them, and tip appropriately. I am afraid of this good review, because they are rarely super busy when I am there, but they beat the heck out or any supermarket baked goods by far.

Lana D.

Yelp
Went in to grab a sandwich. hardly any merchandise in the display cases. are these guys going out of biz? picked up a tomato/mozzarella sandwich. gal toasted it for me which I appreciated, but got home to find crummy tomatoes and hardly any cheese. Definitely skimped on ingredients - Meh.
google avatar

Kina L.

Yelp
This is such a great little breakfast Nook. Located in the Earth Fare shopping center, it is tucked in the back on the side. All the breads are baked fresh there and although the sandwiches and biscuits are all premade.. I found them to be excellent. You cannot beat their pricing. I had a Everything bagel with lox for $5. That is insane. I also tried their biscuits (egg+cheddar+sausage) and although small it was a steal at $2 for a homemade biscuit. All their pastries are also made in house and although I did not try any... I was definitely coveting their croissants. They looked like they would flake into a million pieces. Skip starbucks next door and try it out.

Yelp
Normandy Farm Bakery on Windermere Boulevard in West Ashley is a great place to get some of the best sandwiches and breads in the area. I really like every sandwich they have available with the fresh baked bread and the best ingredients. They make the ordering process very easy even with larger orders it goes smoothly. I have been happy with the results every time I have come through here.

Joseph A.

Yelp
Came in for breakfast with my daughter. Biscuits were dry and hard. Seemed like yesterday's. Same with the cookies. Americano was good. Pretty disappointed to say the least.
google avatar

Akanksha R.

Yelp
No ambiance or bathroom, but the food and coffee are delicious. Try the pesto bialy if you're in the mood for something savory. All the sweet baked goods looked equally delicious. You can smell everything baking when you walk by.
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
Food is AMAZING the staff was a little offputting... Hoping I just caught her on a off morning.

Yelp
While the five stars is being a bit optimistic, over the years Normandy Farm has improved so much that on the basis of consistent quality, unique products, and sheer commitment to the craft of baking interesting varieties of bread, they deserve them. Speaking of which, NF makes delicious bread--some varieties are outstanding, some "merely" good. On a daily basis they make quiches (quite nice--creamy, flavorful), pre-made sandwiches for lunch and breakfast, as well as croissants. Their other baked goods--cookies, pastries, and various types of bialys (kale-walnut/egg-bacon/etc)-- are also high quality. Some, like the kale-walnut bialy, are as good as you'll find anywhere, including New York. NF recently started roasting coffee and selling it for the very reasonable price of $1 a cup. I've bought their roasted beans in bulk (dark and medium roasts) and they make a fine brew. Even more recently Chris and the crew have started making breakfast pizzas in a wood fired oven purchased from the defunct Heart Woodfire Kitchen on James Island. Haven't tried the pizza, but the toppings are interesting and not traditional. Many of the varieties of bread are featured at the Normandy Farms stand at Saturday's Marion Square Farmers Market. Crusty, distinctive sourdoughs, baguettes, and boules incorporate flax seed, walnuts, and other nuts, spices and seeds added to rye and wheat flours from the Edisto-based Geechie Boy Mill. Prices have gone up a bit in the past year--generally to $6 a loaf from $5, but compared to other cities bakery prices, they're not bad. The store (as well as the stand at the Farmers Market) is frequently busy during lunch and breakfast hours, but the service is always friendly....

Yelp
Little local bakery with delicious pastries and sandwiches. Their bread looks good but haven't bought a loaf yet. Coffee is self serve and only $1.50 with free refills. Open at 7 during the week and 8 on Sunday.
google avatar

Yelp
Big improvements. Place looks better and staff is better and that Lox bagel for $5 was my ticket to a great day. Sorry it took so long to comeback but will not be that long next time! Serve yourself coffee was great. All around we already knew they had excellent pastry and breads. With the improvements I love this place.

Yelp
This is where I get my bread. Go early, nice and crispy, with a great taste. I think they also supply other places in the area. Bakery products are also tasty. Great location for anyone shopping the area. Sometimes I walk out eating from my French bread before I get in my car. It's that good. Yea, I know, your thinking, but who says bread has to be eaten with a meal? To me it's a treat no matter when you eat it. Frank G

Yelp
This little bakery is fantastic. Not only are all of the baked goods amazing, their freshly roasted coffee (in-house) is delicious. My wife loves their latte's and I'm a fan of the cappuccino's. The service is fantastic and worth the wait if there is a line. Don't miss out on this hidden gem.

Suzanne E.

Yelp
I've had their food a while back and it was good. I bought one of their salads in the past while headed to the airport and it was also very good. Today I'm sitting with my husband using the outside tables in the morning to get some work done while we drop our son off at Kids's Garden. He got a coffee and says it is good. Next he's getting a parfait and the lady at the table next to me had several bags of bagels and proclaimed they are also good, but "no Bagel Nation." My gripe with this place so far is the Wifi. Hello, this is 2022. I couldn't find the Wifi name and I have to log onto the CCPL or the Earthfare Wifi. When I went into ask what the Wifi is, the lady behind the counter gave me a very long stare. I had to say, My husband bought a coffee and we're sitting outside. She then proceeded to tell me the Wifi - which didn't work. We buy food, we have bought food. We know you guys don't need business because there is a steady stream of people - but this is a coffee shop and we're in 2022! Reminder to self to just get coffee at Earthfare. It probably tastes just as good - they have gluten free options and they have Wifi! Oh, and a lot of other things too. (But, if you really want a better view of the parking lot and want to add some calories to your waistline - come here - but don't expect to get a smile when you ask a question.

Christina R.

Yelp
Love this place ! A cozy neighborhood spot where you might run into former mayor Joe Riley . Everyone still refers to him as Mayor Riley . Their specialties are the baguettes and their breakfast sandwiches.
google avatar

Amy Lauren S.

Yelp
Great bakery in West Ashley! Like someone said, once they are out... they are OUT. So, get their early for best choices. Hubs and I buy their bread at the local farmer's market or in their store and we love it. Great for making French Toast for morning breakfasts or on sandwiches. We've had some lunch sandwiches there too, pretty good. This morning, my run club ran on the Greenway and stopped by NF for breakfast. Most everyone got cute little sandwiches/biscuits with bacon, egg, and cheese on pretzel bread and a coffee. Only $3. You really can't beat that for a breakfast!
google avatar

Helena G.

Yelp
During our dinner at Fig We tasted a delicious bread very similar with a bread from Alentejo, Portugal (Europe). So we decided to buy more of this magnific bread. Are you curious about it? It's farm bread. They don't have a slice machine but the staff was very helpful and cut it for us. If you want to try the original recipe you should go to Alentejo, it's a gorgeous area with amazing food.
google avatar

Joan S.

Yelp
What a delicious surprise! The pastries are FANTASTICALLY yummy! I had the everything bagel with lox, and my friend ordered the bacon egg cheddar bialy with tomato jam. OMG the bialy was one of the best I've had ever
google avatar

Zach L.

Yelp
I come here all the time. It's fantastic! They always have something new to offer but still sell the classics. Can't beat the price of their coffee either.
google avatar

Marisa S.

Yelp
Cute local bakery with a selection of savory, sweet, and healthy options. Availability definitely teeters off towards the end of the afternoon as would be expected. They have great breakfast biscuits and rolls available in the morning. Quiche, salads, and sandwiches are also available along with a standard selection of bagels, bread, rolls, and pretzel rolls. Sweets are rounded out by cookies, brownies, bars, etc. I don't love bread in Charleston (seems like no one can get the good sourdough starter to work here) but Normandy does an alright job. Special shout out for the pretzel roll - soft, chewy, and just the right combo of sweet and salty.
google avatar

Timothy B.

Yelp
Great food, fresh baked bread and great sandwiches. The food is always fresh. Staff is always friendly. Lunch menu is fantastic!! Now that i work closer to the store I always look forward to going on my lunch break!

Ashton L.

Yelp
Amazing coffee, bread, bakery products, and sandwiches! One of my favorite spots for coffee!
google avatar

Bonnie M.

Yelp
I am so happy that Normandy is open on Sunday when I am in the Windermere plaza. The ham and cheese croissant was superb when I warmed it in my oven for a few minutes. Flakey and crunchy; yum. I loved the ginger blueberry scone. I would love plain ginger scone. (My fave) The baguette is crusty on the outside with good chew on the inside but lacks the complexity of taste a good starter gives it. The woman waiting on me was super nice.
google avatar

Shawn P.

Yelp
If you have not found this gem, it is time to do so! Their chocolate croissant rival those if France and teamed with Costa Rica coffee... great way to start the day.
google avatar

Lea A.

Yelp
Always a nice stop for a quick lunch or cup of coffee. I don't eat a lot of bread but whenever I go in the bread looks delicious and fresh! Most items are gone too by the end of the day so you know it's got to be good.
google avatar

Daniel C.

Yelp
Tried their french baguette and farm loaf. So good! We accidentally walked in after the bakery was closed but the staff was so friendly and nice. We were able to get some amazing bread. If you are looking for some great bread, I strongly recommend the Normandy Farms Artisan Bakery!

Yelp
Back in September we stayed at the French Quarter Inn, where they had these delicious pastries for breakfast. In fact, they were so delicious I actually went and interrogated the desk clerk as to where they got them from. He told me it was a local place called Normandy Farms. I googled them and found out they had a downtown location on Meeting St, excellent! Then we went by that location and discovered it empty and abandoned. Sad Jamie. Lucky for us they had another location in West Ashley. So this week we finally made the long journey out there to pick up some of their pastries. We showed up pretty late in the day, close to closing time, so there wasn't a ton of stuff still out. We did manage to pick up a chocolate croissant and a piece of orange, almond poppy-seed bread. My favorite thing from the French Quarter Inn was these almond pastries though and they didn't have any in stock, I didn't even see a label for them in the display case. So we special ordered a few to pick up the next day. The next day when I went to pick up my order the clerk told me "someone ate one of your pastries". That's it. No apology, no remedy for the situation (I had already pre-paid). So I suggested I just exchange it for one of the chocolate pastries in the display case, which he was more than happy to do. Still no apology, no offer of a free cookie to make up for the mistake, nothing. I'm a bit peeved about that, but I won't take off a star this time. I will however, call before leaving my house from now on since it's a 20 mile drive there, so I don't have to drive all the way there just to find out that perhaps my order may have been eaten by the staff? So the almond and chocolate pastries were just as tasty as we remembered them. The bread was also really moist and the orange flavoring was very light, didn't overpower the bread. They had lots of nummy looking sandwiches set out around lunchtime and there were quite a few people inside around noon on a Tuesday. Sandwiches are $6.50, cookies and biscotti are $1.75 and most pastries are $2.75. They have bagels in the morning for $1, cream cheese extra. Breakfast biscuits are $3 each.

Yelp
This place is amazing. Good light food. I had the roast beef where as my wife had the turkey. Food is fresh and amazing! We also had iced coffee. they roast their own coffee and it is SMOOOOOTH. Best local coffee in my honest opinion. I highly recommend it if you are visiting or even just local!
google avatar

Yelp
Normandy farms is the perfect place to pop in for lunch or breakfast! Amazing goods and always freshly made. Whether it is a quick yummy meal to go or some incredible fresh breads you need, Normandy is the place you need I go! Great staff and very good prices! But get there early, their yummy goods go fast!
google avatar

Kris M.

Yelp
Favorite local bakery! I'm there several times a week. Their food is amazing, service is friendly and fast, and their prices can't be beat. I always get their chicken biscuits and on Fridays and Saturdays they have these unbelievable cinnamon rolls with the icing baked inside.
google avatar

Kayla E.

Yelp
Frequent this little bakery/coffee shop as much as possible! You are crazy to go down the road to Starbucks when this gem has both better tasting and less expensive coffee! Not to mention all of the fresh baked bread you can smell a mile down the greenway. Love it here!
google avatar

Misael R.

Yelp
Cool place to grab a pastry and coffee. Everything is always super Fresh and the service is great. I would recommend a scone if they have them. Next time I'd like to try the sandwiches which also looked great.
google avatar

Roberta M.

Yelp
Bagels are the best I've had here, but was charged different prices on different days. As a "northerner" I need a good bagel and will hunt high and low. What's with your pricing?
google avatar

Jessie B.

Yelp
We stopped here to gear up for our 12 hour drive back home, so we bought a little bit of whatever they had out. Everything was great and the girl working at the counter could not have been sweeter or more helpful. They have an assortment of grab n' go sandwiches, salads and fruit salad (bathing in fresh mint and honey I might add!). We also tried the breakfast biscuits, blueberry/cheese danish, cranberry scone, honey wheat bagel, and bacon jalapeno quiche. EVERYTHING was great, I can't really emphasize what high quality baked goods they offer. Definitely a spot worth checking out. Very well priced too.
google avatar

Nicole R.

Yelp
YUM! I loved eating here. I was bummed having to leave downtown Charleston but I am SO glad I was called to the seamstress near by at lunch time because I was able to pop in here and eat. I had a fruit cup with honey and mint that was such a nice extra to my Italian Sandwich. It was kind of expensive but the time that goes into the food and the quality of the bread, out of this world. The staff are great and I loved seeing how patient they were with preteen kids who came in for 50 cent rolls. After my meal I was so impressed I tried a pastry and some coffee. Next time I'm in town I will go out of my way to stop here!
