Yelp
Diners. We love 'em. Counter seating. Home style cooking. Casual atmosphere. Bring the kids. Meet up with friends. Stop in for a quick work lunch. My first diner experience was as a small child, maybe 3, sitting on one of those stools that spins around at the counter. Best thing in the world to my young mind and the love continues still.
We had plans in Bridgeport and decided to stop for lunch along the way, choosing this spot before we headed out. From 95S, it was a quick ride down the road to reach this diner. The 'on' ramp is practically right outside the restaurant making it a good stop en-route if you are just passing through.
Attached to a long, single story building that faces the road and contains two other businesses, there is a large gravel parking area beside the restaurant as well as street parking. During our visit, in the midst of a pandemic (have your heard about that?) there is a clear message spray painted onto the steps "Must Wear Mask'. Gave me a chuckle. An entertaining way to get the message across. The State of CT requires it, the staff and fellow patrons appreciate it.
We arrived for an early lunch and got to choose our seat. We were greeted immediately upon entering and chose the booth furthest from the door. The waiter took our drink order right away and left us to peruse the menu. The table tops in the booths had the menu's under plexiglass so no one has to ever touch them. What a great idea! Breakfast is served all day and they have soups, sandwiches and burgers for lunch. I asked if they have been getting a lot of take out orders and said they had. Now I see you can place a take out order right through Yelp as well as get a Grub Hub delivery. Keepin' it safe. Nice.
We did actually get to spend some time talking to the two gentlemen before the lunch crowd arrived and had some nice discussions about food, covid compliance and keeping business open. Really nice folks here. I had some questions about their soup and they made a phone call to verify the ingredients so I could be assured not to eat something I have a sensitivity to. Absolutely impeccable customer service right there. Thanks guys!
I ordered the Norm's Burger (sans bacon) which is a 6oz patty covered in sautéed onion and a big slice of melty, tangy swiss to hold all those onions in place. The patty was fresh and cooked as ordered, the lettuce was a huge piece (none of this shredded lettuce nonsense) and the bun was the perfect size for the burger in diameter and bulk. The bread to meat ratio was good, the bun was soft and fresh. The onion rings that accompany this burger are nice big onion slices in a tempura style batter and were so good it never occurred to me to dump any salt on them. I do enjoy a good onion ring and these meet all my requirements.
My SO got the rueben and this sandwich is really good. The meat was lean, the sauerkraut tangy, the cheese nice and gooey and the thousand island dressing has a pleasant kick. All together this was one very good rueben. The sandwich comes with fries which are large cut and nice and fluffy inside.
I appreciate the large mug my hot tea was served in, and as odd as it may seem, the water was good too. Ever get 'tap water' at a restaurant and it tastes funny? Not here. Not sure if it's just good local water or if they filter, but it was nice and I do notice such things. The service was very good. The waiter made a point to be sure we both answered when he asked 'everything good? and we had a few good laughs too.
The restroom is a small spot but certainly big enough to accommodate an adult and small child if needed. There is no room in there for a changing table so keep that in mind if you might need one. The ladies room has an updated sink and hands free towel dispenser. There is also a very old electric hot air hand dryer in there that I didn't try but it's nice to have options.
On the way back we realized the diner is very close to the Groton Subase. Yea! Good food and good people: we definitely look forward to our next visit.
