The Best Restaurants and Things to Eat at the Mall of America | Eater Twin Cities

"In the newly renovated North Garden I noticed it’s not quite a food court yet somehow manages to be one: a collection of grab-and-go restaurants featuring familiar national names alongside local outposts like Hot Indian, where the fare and snacks (notably the Indi Frites) make a perfect quick meal before more mall time." - Joy Summers

I have been visiting this restaurant since I was a kid and it has always been my favourite Chinese restaurant. The new owner is doing a great job and the food is delicious. I really like the Gwin Jin, the pan fried noodles. The his time got the Crispy Chicken with vegetables really tasty. The General Tsos is really good too and fried rice is great tons of tender pork. Nice cup of tea is great with lunch as well.

Google
If you ever had bad Chinese food this place ranks top 10 worst foods I ever ate. I ordered a takeout combo a. Pork fried rice must have been days old because the first couple bites and it was eating rocks. Not to mention the flavor of very old oil more like the oil you use for your car. The chicken wings pink on the inside and skin was rubbery. Chicken fingers were like an over battered fried puffy cake. Called the place to complain and I guess the owner wanted me to come back and he would make a new one. If it tasted so bad why would I come back for more? Since I travel all around I didn’t want to go back and just threw it away. Worst money spent on food ever

Google
I ordered general Taos chicken and got orange chicken. The crab ragoons have very little filling just taste like a fried crisp. The rice is a very weird texture between sticky/ chewy consistency. My husband enjoyed the food but this will be my first and last time ordering from here.

Google
This use to be my favorite place and was worth the 35 minute drive but now its awful! The restaurant was sold to new people and its NOTHING like it once was. I've tried it a few times and it seems to get worse and worse. Prices went up and quality went way down, so disappointing.

Ariel G.

Google
Im VERY picky when it comes to Chinese food but this secret gem didn't disappoint!! Hands down the BEST I've ever had. Its in a spot where you wouldn't even know it was there I barely even saw it but I'm SO happy I did. The owners are very nice and its definitely a spot worth checking out!

Bruce C.

Google
Got delivery ,very quick. Ordered pork lomein lg and small and 4 egg rolls. Lomein tasted like fish and smelt like fish, the egg rolls were fried old oil i could tell by the taste. We won't go back. Sorry

Arlene B.

Google
I was very disappointed when my order was delivered. I ordered #4 and #10 dinner plates. Instead of getting the pepper steak , I got some chicken balls in sauce. I didn't get the chicken wings, instead I got some triangle shape item with cheese or something in it. This was the first time I tried your restaurant and I am not happy with it. Hoping you might have some coupons to give me an incentive to try you again.

Betty A.

Google
We ordered pork Lo mein, egg drop soup and veggie egg roll. Everything was delicious -especially the lo mein! Our server was an elder and she was so sweet. Appears to be family owned.
google avatar

Melissa L.

Yelp
April 2025 was my last visit there. The original owner has sold the business and moved on. The new owners food was horrible!! We will not go back. Unfortunately the food is awful under the new ownership. The server was great. That is all we can say that was good about our visit.

Lisa C.

Yelp
Restaurant was sold, new owners took over just recently not the same great Chinese Food for the past 30 years sorry to see Ray go. This was probably the best in the area. The pork fried rice missing all the little extras like bean sprouts peas pieces of egg, Crunchy Hunan Chicken not the same sauce so sad. Have to find another restaurant.
google avatar

Val B.

Yelp
A google 4* rating encouraged our visit but it was disappointing. Not sure why it rated so high. All i ordered was Shrimp lo mein and it didnt seem fresh. The shrimp was fine but the noodles werent soft and were without flavor. No garlic, onion, vegetables, and they didnt even have ginger ale. (Isnt ginger the cornerstone of chinese cooking?) The owner was friendly.. but i say skip it.

Michael R.

Yelp
The Crunchy Hunan chicken was absolutely inedible, very tough and not the same delicious sauce that we have enjoyed for over twenty years! And how can you screw up a spring roll ! Ray where ever you are I hope that you are enjoying your retirement. Mike.

Yelp
My partner recommended we go here for dinner as a change up. Ordered 2 meals. Chicken fingers with boneless spare ribs, fried rice and egg rolls. My partner ordered the triple delight. It was neither delightful or even passable. Everything was extremely greasy, the chicken fingers had slivers for chicken encased in gooey greasy breading. The spare ribs tasted off. The triple delight also tasted off, the gravy was gelatinous goo. I didn't bother sending it back. As there was only one server for the entire place with probably a dozen plus tables. I'm giving one star for her attempt to keep up.

Jack K.

Yelp
The food was great, the people there were so nice while it is a very small restaurant It is beautiful and filled with Chinese architecture.
google avatar

Macy W.

Yelp
Amazing Chinese! Expensive but great great fresh food! Hesitant because $14 a plate is crazy but was definitely worth it
google avatar

Enit S.

Yelp
We left Holyoke mall and wanted to take back something to eat. I was hoping we'd get good food here but what we ordered made all but one of us sick and I think it was the fried rice. The food wasn't even enjoyable, it was just ok. What a shame.
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
Average Chinese food. Got takeout on Christmas because it was on the way home from the movies.

Karen S.

Yelp
Had a craving for Asian noodles, but my go-to place was closed. I remembered North Garden had been well-rated, so I drove there and ordered my takeout food in person. The person at the front was pleasant and answered my menu questions thoroughly. That's the end of the positives. I ordered pan-fried dumplings and the house lo mein. The dumplings had a nice brown outside, but the dough was impossibly thick, and the filling was dense, dry and skimpy. These were expensive, but inedible. I asked for the lo mein to be made spicy, but it wasn't particularly so. It was oily, and the pieces of meat seemed like trimmings from other dishes; they were irregularly cut, and chewy rather than tender. Also expensive for sub-par food. My lunch turned out to be pricey trash, instead of the meal I'd been craving. Disappointing.

Kathleen G.

Yelp
So, one of my favorite restaurants; however, I ordered delivery (delivery express) and my order was for spring rolls; I got egg rolls so don't know who f'ed up but basically uneatable for me so, a waste of my money Could not find delivery express on yelp because my order clearly indicates spring rolls in the receipt Maybe a better delivery service?

Yelp
First time trying and it was great! My new go to Chinese spot in the Springfield area. Folks working were very nice as well.

Yelp
This family has been serving the same high quality Chinese food for over 30 years and it shows! Excellent tasting food!

Yelp
We came here for lunch on a tuesday around 12:15. We were greeted warmly by our server. The place was empty but a family of five came in shortly after us. We shared hot and sour soup and shrimp with snow peas and broccoli- both DELICOUS!!!! I had a glass of plum wine. Prices, service and cleanliness all great. The decor is simple but nice(tired needs to be refreshed). We would recommend. We would return when we come to west springfield again!!!
google avatar

Yelp
This is the most terrible Chinese Restaurant that i have ever been to. The food was so terrible i could not eat it. I had Chicken Cashew and it had a terrible sauce with it. The management did not make any adjustments to the bill and i only took one bite and could not eat it. It hardly had any chicken just a bunch of vegetable and rice. I would not recommend it to my worse enemy. R. D
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
It's a hidden gem, we order beef broccoli, pork fried rice, boneless ribs, chicken fingers all are very good not greasy at all. Must try the popcorn shrimp omg it's amazing. I would say out of all those food popcorn shrimp is the best.

Yelp
Overall not a bad experience, but not the best available in the area. We came here on a Sunday and the place was empty. The restaurant itself is somewhat hidden in the back of a strip mall behind an apartment complex. The interior is a little run down with peeling wall paper, stained carpets, and little decorations/style. However, in my experience these Chinese restaurants tend to be the best tasting, so we weren't exactly disappointed. We were quickly greeted and seated. We ordered the items pictured above. Our server was fantastic, she was attentive, friendly, even though she didn't know a couple of the items on the menu well (maybe she was new) it did not have much of an impact on our overall service. The food itself was mediocre. The soup was a HUGE portion and we appreciated the fresh vegetables in it however the broth itself was VERY VERY bland compared to other beef noodle soups at Chinese restaurants we have experienced. The sweet and sour chicken certainly looked interesting when it arrived at our table, it was HUGE pieces of chicken. Unfortunately when we cut into it, we learned that the chicken pieces were actually rather small and were covered in a very thick layer of breading. The chicken itself was under-fried so it was just a mushy mess of breading. Finally the spicy shredded beef was actually quite good with good flavor, I'd order it again. Overall, not a bad experience, but far from the best. I think there are better places in the area we will stick with for now.

Yelp
I cannot believe that I have not reviewed North garden after all of these years this is one of my go to spots for amazing Asian cuisine
google avatar

Barnum G.

Yelp
Residing in AZ can be a painful experience, if you enjoy Chinese/Szechuan. Thank goodness we stumbled upon this find! In Arizona, there are no chicken fingers at Asian restaurants. Yes, you heard that right. Then we had beef fried rice, which was great, the hubby had beef and snow peapods, and I had the Szechuan Crunchy Beef (OMG, get this off the specialty menu!) We were so happy to just enjoy with nice dinner in a Chinese/Szechuan setting. Thank you!

Yelp
North Garden takeout has been excellent for years. Containers are packed to the brim with your food, no complaints about portion size. Anything marked "Hunan" is fried crispy-style while not overpowered by batter or grease. There is always a General Tso dinner in my bag, chicken pieces are high quality with plenty of sauce.

Rodrigo T.

Yelp
I ordered a good amount of food for pick up. When I got there to pick it up, I noticed the area. It is a run down location when there was an ominous feeling I would get robbed. I walked in, stood around for 5 minutes before using the restroom. I finally was greeted with a woman coming out of the kitchen and walking passed me. She said "hi". Then went to address a different patron. I stood around for another 5 minutes and finally decided to go somewhere else. I won't be returning and don't recommend coming here.

Yelp
This was a spot I use to frequently dine at and for some reason was off my radar. I friend mentioned dining there and I had just about gave up on any Chinese food experiences due to MSG and my severe allergies. I ask every time no Msg and either they ignore or don't care regardless I end up ill. I told the phone operator that I can not have any MSG in my food. First time i was heard and respected... no illness and simple yummy food.... thank you for listening North Garden.

Yelp
After the manager replied in my previous review that they would make it right and I should come in for a refund, I called to confirm that and the same gentleman told me to come in any time and he would process it. I went in today and the worker there told me he wasn't in and to come back after 3:30 to process it (already aggravating because he had said to come in any time). Now after rearranging my afternoon, I got another message on Yelp informing me that there was a mistake and they would NOT issue a refund. Another example of very poor customer service and wasting my time. I wish there were negative stars. Poor communication, terrible quality food, abysmal customer service. Emphatically do NOT EVER recommend.
google avatar

Aria H.

Yelp
The place is literally "a hole in the wall" It's located within a building, but the entrance is on the side. Not very good advertisement. I ordered the shrimp lo mein, and it was VERY dry and bland! It tasted like regular pasta with plain shrimp, pretty disappointing
google avatar

Kelly B.

Yelp
Man am I glad I decided to try this place. I had been looking for that authentic pork fried rice for a while, as opposed to the yellow rice with carrots and peas. I saw the general tso and decided to try it. I couldn't be more happy I did. Honestly. When I called it took a little bit for them to answer but when they did the person on the other line was sweet as pie.The building looks a little rough but it's a very quaint cute place inside. The person working was clearly a runner and had several runner tags in his office which I thought was very cool. The man working was very very sweet and friendly, (he told me how he was cleaning the fish tank.) the food smelled amazing on the ride home and when I opened it I was so happy. The chicken is all white meat!!! And rice was exactly what I was looking for. I couldn't be more happy with this experience. Even the fortune was a good one!!!!

Yelp
Always consistently good and fresh tasting. Been going off and on here for years. We live in South Hadley now but still make the trip over to West Springfield occasionally to get some great Chinese from North Garden. I'm a big fan of egg foo young and it's always great here. And a very friendly staff working in difficult times with covid virus protocol going on.
google avatar

Yelp
Sad to have to post a negative review after being so pleased to start with, we order from here on a nearly weekly basis, not cheap but my son is a fan of the fried rice and egg rolls. We have noticed the quality and quantity of the food we receive have deteriorated lately. It's so frustrating to arrive home with your takeout order and find they have failed (yet again) to actually fill the quart size containers. I called to voice my irritation at this new practice and was offered a new fried rice and chow mein if I was willing to drive back the twenty minutes it takes to pick it up. Not a very noble offer since I'd already paid $86 for the takeout and was now just hoping for a hot meal. Unfortunately the ambiance of this establishment does not lend itself to being a very nice place to eat in so takeout was our only option. Time to find a new place for Chinese.
google avatar

Angie L.

Yelp
I am normally very picky about asian food, especially in the NE part of the US. This place however, not authentic, was still good. I ordered the kungpao shrimp and the shrimp was big, sauce was tasty, and good size portions to where I was able to eat it for another meal. The restaurant was clean, slightly more expensive than other chinese restaurants, but for the quality of the food, I am okay with that. I did have to wait a bit long because their credit card machine was down, but it was fine, the lady was nice enough to keep apologizing. I was in no rush. All in all, I recommend this place for your chinese food needs in the area.
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
Everyone has their favorite Chinese place. If it isn't this one, you're wrong. Simply put, this is the greatest Chinese place in the area. This might be the greatest Chinese place ever. Sure, it's got the typical hallmarks of the industry: the twenty year-old pastel wallpaper, the conspicuously empty fish tank, the soothing orchestral music that you swear is the soundtrack to something but you can't remember what. But I assure you: North Garden is fundamentally different than anywhere you've ever been. First off, you've got Ray, the owner. Here's a guy who will make the hell out of a scorpion bowl. Call the Uber in advance. Drinking away your loneliness? Try the suffering bastard. It's like a scorpion bowl but for degenerates. Looking for something to pair with the beef-and-broccoli? Get a zombie; it doesn't pair well with anything, but you won't remember it anyway. Secondly, this place serves food...lots of food. The portions are enormous and a tremendous value. There's a nice half-wall running around the restaurant so the functional public can't see you eating a metric s#&t-load of boneless spare ribs while sobbing silently. And everything is clean. Next time you're craving fast and inexpensive Chinese food, give North Garden a try.
google avatar

Karen D.

Yelp
I recently ordered take out from North Garden. I ordered Vegetable noodles dish , my mom ordered General chows chicken our meals wear look worm at best . The noodles in my order wear sticky and stuck together as if it had been sitting for quite some time. Moms General Chows Chicken all so Looked and tasted as if had been sitting for some time. When I arrived I was told the chef had not finished our order and yet the meal was as I said barely edible. In my opinion you should avoid this restaurant my male cost $28 not worth five dollars!!!!

Mindy H.

Yelp
The place was clean. The food was okay-felt that it was overall a little too salty for my family. It's hard to say that this is my go-to place for Chinese food but it's definitely a plus that the environment looked tidy.

Johanna M.

Yelp
This used to be a regular for me until a year or so ago when the quality took a nosedive. But being desperate for Chinese within delivery range, I tried again this week. Very pleased to discover the quality is back. The food was fresh and excellent. More than pleased. Well done.
google avatar

Vijay N.

Yelp
Easily one of the best chicken fried rice I've ever had. Quick service, cheap and the lady at the counter was friendly. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Shayla M.

Yelp
Amazing place! Weve eaten here three times, all of which were picture perfect experiences. The business is spotless, wait staff super friendly and socialable, and decor pleasent. The prices are so cheap, normally we both get a dinner special with a side large order of their MIND BLOWING beef lo main to share and still pay less than $30 before tip. Plus we always end up taking home another meal worth for tomarrow because our portions are so large! Not a single down side besides it being a tiny bit hard to find, easy to miss.
google avatar

Tim L.

Yelp
My go to for take out Chinese. Always get the hot and sour soup which is tasty. General's chicken and lo main are always spot on to fill me up with plenty of leftovers. Raymond is always holding down the fort to ensure timely deliverly. He is an avid runner who has done epic runs, so be sure to ask him. You won't forget as all of his race bibs are hanging on the wall!
google avatar

Eric W.

Yelp
Really clean restaurant with nice people running it, even the fish tank is spotless. I had the generals chicken extra spicy and pork fried rice. The chicken was good and nice and crispy but not very spicy and the gravy with it was flavorful and a little bit smokey which I liked. The rice I think might have been sitting around some as it was dried out and some of it was harder than it should be. The egg rolls are on the smallish side but good and very crispy. The portion size for the lunch special was rather large which was nice.
google avatar

Donna P.

Yelp
Chicken Fingers are Huge but all of them are lacking chicken and they are under cooked. I had this happen twice and I will not go back. Seafood is raw and I highly discourage takeout. Hunan Chicken is just not good.
google avatar

Don P.

Yelp
I have been to North Garden several times before my yelping days and have always felt they do an extremely good job, well above average in my opinion. On my latest stop, I ordered Hot and Sour Soup, egg roll, sauteed string beans with chicken. How often have you ordered hot and sour soup only to exclaim where's the hot, where's the sour, I doubt you will have that problem there, I was actually shocked at the white pepper spiciness; the sour note was where it needed to be. So often all or atleast one element is toatally lacking, that day all the stars were in culinary alignment as that was a very good H&S. The sauteed green beans with chicken dish was excellent in flavor each item cooked beautifully and the brown sauce sent it over the top. The portion size was enormous, although, I put a very sizable dent in it, it was simply delicious. The egg roll I am sure is not mabe in house but it too was better than most and I certainly had no compliants about it or my lunch, it was a very pleasant surprise.
google avatar

Xiao Z.

Yelp
As far as Chinese food in Western Mass goes, this is certainly one of my top choices. It may not cater the most authentic Chinese cuisine, but it makes up for it with friendly staff, clean environment and tender pepper steak dishes. 4/5 stars only because it's slightly more expensive than what I'm used to.
google avatar

Max H.

Yelp
This place is ok for your standard chinese food. Definitely not going to rock your socks off but decent none the less. One thing to note is if the dish comes with white rice and you want to switch it out for fried rice you may have some difficulty. I've only done it successfully one out of four times, the guy acted like he did me a huge favor (I don't get it). Their lunch portions are huge so if trying to get the best bang for your buck go around lunchtime. The menu items are cheaper and the same size as the dinner portion. As others have noted the Hunan chicken is pretty awesome, but this comes with white rice so best of luck if you prefer fried rice. Bottom Line: Worth checking out if looking for decent chinese food. Certainly not the best I've ever had but better than several that I've been to in the same area.
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
Update: someone must have quit. This place is mediocre on a good day. I tried again and again but now I just don't bother. OK...this is as good as I have found near Springfield and Northampton. Some of the food is a little different than the usual suspects. I'm obsessed with the Crunchy Hunan Chicken: kind of in between General Tso's and Orange Chicken, but unique. It's not full of vegetables but has julienned carrots in it and sweet but savory sauce on strips of breaded chicken. It's fried but never greasy feeling. The Gwin Jin is awesome as well...it's seared chicken (or scallops and shrimp) in a soy wine ginger sauce with green beans, carrots, and broccoli. It's just different from the typical brown sauce, the chicken or seafood has a great sear to it, and the green beans totally make the dish. The hot and sour soup is quite good but I find the broth in the wonton soup a little bland. That said, nothing I've eaten has been bad and most everything is way above average to excellent. The Lo Mein is light rather than oily, with REAL strips of meat in it. The Tofu with Mixed Vegetables uses really soft tofu that was simmered in the sauce rather than the usual fried garbage. The fried rice makes you wonder what the hell everyone else is doing wrong with theirs. The downside is they don't deliver, and you can barely find the place tucked back off of Riverdale St. But the dining room isn't too garish to dine in, and it's a 90 minute drive to Chinatown in Boston, so I'm hard pressed to complain much here. I'm really glad I found them.

Greg C.

Yelp
I heard by word of mouth that this place was pretty good. I usually have a couple go to places closer to where I live, but I happened to be in this area and give it a try. This is the last time I will go here. Chicken fingers were very greasy. The oil ozzed out when you bit into them. The batter used to cook them was overcooked on some and undercooked on others. Then the broccoli in my combination platter meal had a funny taste. Only reason I give this 2 stars and not 1 is because the fried rice was acceptable. I still would never try this place again. While terrible This place will probably never change and will continue to get business because it's surrounded by a plethora of apartment complexes..
google avatar

Cindy B.

Yelp
Food and service is great. Portions are huge! 4 stars because of the atmosphere...they are in desperate need of a renovations/redecorating. I will definitely be a repeat customer but via delivery only.

Joseph K.

Yelp
This restaurant was very miss leading, orange chicken ended up just being a bunch of chicken fingers drenched in sauce, the fried rice smelled and tasted burnt, they barely gave us any ribs or crab rangoons for what we paid for and it seems like they tried to throw in some chicken wings to make up for it since I didn't even order that, but to top it off the person I placed the order over the phone with could barely hear anything saying it was very loud at his restaurant as he was screaming like a chimpanzee trying to take my order, but when I got there he was the only one there -- weird. So in the end POOR SERVICE and CRAPPY FOOD, would NOT RECOMMEND.
google avatar

Heath B.

Yelp
As far as cheap Chinese food goes, it doesn't get any better. We go out of our way regularly for the Crispy Hunan Chicken, and so should you! It also doesn't get any points for ambiance, which should give the 5 start rating even more weight! Eat in, it's worth it for the fresh crisypness of the perfectly deep fried food. Get some fried rice, it's some of the best around.
google avatar

Rosemary S.

Yelp
3 1/2 stars!! Take out. First time. Crab Rangoon not sweetened at all. Boneless spare ribs tasty. Also received a spring roll and chicken wings in dinner combination. Good serving size. Swift service.

Tyler K.

Yelp
General tso's chicken had good flavor. EVERYTHING had shrimp in it. Chicken lo mein had shrimp, house fried rice had shrimp. Huge turn off. The lo mein noodle were watery/pasty and not very flavorful. Should have went elsewhere.
google avatar

Lena R.

Yelp
Best Chinese food around. Anything you order, you will LOVE. It's all fresh and delicious. The only Chinese food place I order from.

Philip J. H.

Yelp
This is a little off Riverdale St. in West Springfield but this spot might for some be small but this little place holds wonders for those who love Szechuan-style Chinese. They do have apps & also entrees that are very good & if you wish to not have the stuff you want not be hot & spicy just simply tell the wait staff to note to the chef to not do such but if you do want it & if they ask about hot oil & mustard that you want to have the heat kicking. They do come with the traditional dry noodles & also Chinese tea which I'll say is very good & to me the best style I myself like has to be the crunchy hunan chicken hot & spicy. Décor is a wee little old but this isn't bad looking I'll say & this place is coming on 25 yrs. in the game so they doing something right & they do serve liquor with the spirits you'd expect & such including drinks you'd like to have on certain times if you wish & yes they even do wine and also beer. Another note now you guys recall my most recent review of that delivery service Delivery Express & I mentioned this also in another report of Liquori's Pizzeria this service does so happen to handle their delivery so if you order from that menu which they got on their online files & call or online order they'll set it all up so you get some good one out of the West Side. Well there you go & this is the word & oh another one I'll also note is the lo meins which are also great too. Others well just either Delivery Express or come & visit & love it.
