We came here to celebrate my father's birthday. Reservations as a must, as they were completely packed inside. While the food was hit or miss, and the people were professional and friendly, our overall experience was very disappointing and did not live up to the promise of the inviting atmosphere.
I'll start with what ruined the visit, then I'll talk about the food. My father cannot do tomato and cannot do spicy due to stomach acid issues. We ordered a dish with a spicy tomato sauce, but asked to swap out spicy tomato for anything else. The waiter suggested a cheese sauce, and we took his suggestion. Everyone's dish came out, and my father's dish had spicy tomato sauce. We pointed it out and the waiter apologized, saying that he wrote "tomato allergy" on the ticket. He said he would get it corrected right away. Now in my family's culture, we really wouldn't be eating before my father, and especially it was his birthday. But he insisted that everyone go ahead and eat because our food would get cold. It was a very uncomfortable experience and we all felt terrible that he wasn't able to eat while the rest of us were eating. When his dish did come out, we were all finished. His noodles were undercooked, but there was no sense in having them redo it because it was getting late, and he was very hungry. He also hates complaining, so none of us said anything about it, other than it was good. I understand al dente, and this was far from it. I guess when they rushed the dish, they simply didn't cook the noodles long enough. It's surprising because I could swear it's fresh pasta, which cooks super fast. But I guess if you just dunk it in hot water for a few seconds, that would be a way to undercook it.
On to the food. Salads were tasty and perfectly dressed. We did not enjoy the fried calamari. There were only rings, no tentacles, which leads me to believe that it either came from a pre-prepared package. Slightly overcooked and too much batter. I got the old fashioned cocktail with whistlepig rye in it, and I loved it. Bread was fine. The pesto pasta was the star of the night. Absolutely delicious. The mortadella pizza was way too salty and wet to enjoy, but the crust was good. The pasta dish with sausage in red sauce was quite good. Branzino was fresh and tasty, but seemed like not good value in terms of cost for what you get. The squid ink seafood pasta had decent seafood, but the undercooked noodles ruined the dish. We didn't finish it and we didn't care to take it home. The barolo by the glass was barolo for sure, but not good at all. Whoever picked out that wine didn't do a very good job. We got a couple different cakes and donut holes for dessert. Cakes were too sweet and kind of dry. Donut holes were so dense that my kids didn't want to eat it after taking a couple bites.
Probably could be a 5 star experience if you just went in, got whistlepig old fashioned, got pesto pasta, didn't need anything customized, skipped apps and dessert, and walked out. I doubt we'll be returning anytime soon.
