North River Lobster Co. Review - Hell's Kitchen - New York - The Infatuation

"Despite being surrounded by (dirty, dirty) water, Manhattan doesn’t have much in the way of boardwalks or the kind of no frills seafood restaurants that normally populate them. Well, now we have one. North River Lobster Co. opened up this summer at Pier 81 - on a boat, on the water, in Manhattan - right below 42nd Street on the West Side. Even though it’s in the middle of fart-tastic touristville, we applaud the effort here. Honestly, the last time I was on a boat in Manhattan I was seven, it was the Intrepid, and I was crying because I was scared. Here’s what you need to know about North River Lobster Co. As we discussed, it’s on a boat, and no, you can’t hashtag that anymore. The boat docks at Pier 81 and is there from 12:30pm-10pm daily, and then sets “sail” for a quick half-hour tour of the Hudson at designated times throughout the day. The crowd is what you’d expect from the location - more fanny packs than fedoras. There are numerous seating situation, both indoors and out. Order on the second floor, grab a table in one of numerous indoor or outdoor seating situations, and then wait for your light-up lobster to blink and vibrate. Then prepare to enjoy numbingly average seafood. The shrimp po boy is mostly bread, the lobster roll is just sort of there, and their oyster prep needs help. That’s OK though, we don’t need the food on this boat to be awesome. Just drive us around on the water. Food Rundown Oysters Simple prep, nothing fancy, just fresh oysters over ice with some tartare and some overly sweet mignonette. The raw bar folks could pay a little closer attention to detail though, as a couple of the shucks were sloppy, leaving shell fragments inside the oysters. Fish Tacos Exactly what you’d expect to get if you stopped into a random restaurant on the Jersey Shore boardwalk and ordered fish tacos. Who knows what’s inside, but they taste pretty good. Lobster Roll $18 is a decent deal for a sizable lobster roll with plenty of meat. We happily took this bad boy down, but for some reason the lobster salad itself didn’t taste like much. They could have punched up the flavor a bit more with butter or herbs to bring it to life. Shrimp Po Boy Lots of little fried shrimp, way, way, way too much bread. Thankfully there was plenty of cole slaw involved, marrying the two. This would have been infinitely better on a toasted plain burger bun, instead of a thick hoagie." - Andrew Steinthal

The NYC Boat Power Rankings

"A very large boat with three different levels, North River Lobster Co. is like a crowded amusement park ride with shellfish and alcohol. You’ll find this thing docked at Pier 81 near West 41st Street, although every 90 minutes or so it takes off for a short sail around the Hudson. A ticket will run you between $10-$25, and for another $32 you can get a lobster roll that does a decent imitation of a better lobster roll. This is actually the sister boat to the next entry on this list, although it’s a bit smaller and draws a bigger crowd, which makes for a more festive atmosphere. North River is definitely gimmicky, but it’s also kind of fun." - bryan kim

7 Exciting Things To Do & Eat In NYC This Labor Day Weekend

"There’s still time for anyone who promised themselves they’d yell “starboard” on a ship this summer to follow through. North River Lobster Co, a three-level boat docked at Pier 81 near West 41st Street that takes a short sail around the Hudson every hour, is running Thursday through Sunday. The whole thing feels like an amusement park ride with shellfish and alcohol. Ten dollars gets you a day pass that allows for unlimited rides, and, for roughly $23, you can get a decent lobster roll. Buy a pass here." - hannah albertine

Where To Eat With Someone You Don't Like Talking To

"North River Lobster Co. is a restaurant on a boat that leaves from a pier near 41st Street on the west side of Manhattan. Being on a boat doesn't prevent you from having conversations, but mostly you'll be walking around saying things like "Look, there's that bridge" to each other. You can get lobster rolls, beer battered fish and chips, and oysters on board, and the whole trip only takes an hour. Once you disembark, you'll be back where you started (i.e., in a place with nothing else to do), so going your separate ways will be the most logical next step." - kenny yang

Where To Hang Out By The Water

"Unless you sneak into some hedge fund manager’s yacht party, North River Lobster Co may be your best bet for drinking cocktails and eating lobster while sailing around the city. This boat takes off from Pier 81 around 42nd Street on the Hudson every 90 minutes until 11pm, and has three floors of bars and seating where you can hang out as long as you’d like (after you pay $10 to get on board)." - matt tervooren

This is such a great experience!! Good on a boat that actually leaves the dock. Sitting on the top deck with the sun shining a cold drink in a cute souvenir cup with a tray of ice cold seafood is the dream !! The sunset cruise is stunning and highly recommended

Beautiful day on the Lobster Boat. We went for my mom’s birthday. The service was great and the concept of cruising while having your meal was excellent. The Hudson is beautiful and the views never disappoint. The only reason I can’t give 5 stars is because the food quality was not great. I’m big on quality especially as prices continue to rise for everything. The lobster roll had lobster and filler. My Mom enjoyed the oysters. I don’t eat oysters so no comment there. The fries were cold. The froze drink was pretty good. I would recommend. It’s one of those things you have to experience for yourself.

Our recent family outing aboard the North River Lobster Company’s lobster boat was an experience we’ll cherish for years to come. Celebrating a decade as New York’s premier lobster cruise, it’s no wonder this floating seafood haven has become a staple for both locals and tourists alike. **Setting Sail on the Hudson** From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement. We started our adventure at the Pier Bar, where the lively pre-sail atmosphere and the picture-perfect buoy wall set the tone for the day. The kids loved taking photos, and the cocktails were the perfect start for the adults. **Cruising and Dining in Style** As we embarked on our 2-hour sunset cruise, the breathtaking views of the New York City skyline slowly gave way to the majestic sight of the Statue of Liberty. The three-deck boat offered ample space for everyone to explore, whether we wanted to soak up the sun or relax in the shaded areas. The highlight, of course, was the food. The famous lobster rolls lived up to their reputation – fresh, flavorful, and perfectly complemented by the diverse selection of cocktails. The kids enjoyed the family-friendly menu options while we savored the seafood delights. **Unforgettable Moments** One of the most memorable parts of the trip was the "Four on an Oar" shot paddle experience. It was a fun, communal moment that encapsulated the spirit of the North River Lobster Company – bringing people together for laughter and unforgettable memories. **Convenient and Flexible** What we appreciated most was the flexibility. Whether you’re looking for a quick lunch, a weekend dinner, or a leisurely sunset cruise, there’s an option for everyone. Booking was a breeze, with individual boarding passes available online or at the box office, and the season pass is a fantastic option for those looking to return again and again. **Final Thoughts** Our family’s day aboard the North River Lobster Company’s boat was nothing short of spectacular. From the stunning views and delicious food to the welcoming atmosphere and unique experiences, it’s clear why this has been New York’s favorite lobster boat for the past ten years. We can't wait to come back and make more memories! If you’re in NYC, don’t miss out – book your adventure today!

Boat that runs up the Hudson and serves lobster rolls. Drinks good, service excellent. Lobster roll had too much seasoning and was oddly on folded Texas toast. However, it was tasty, but not great. Plenty of meat on it. Music was street urban, which didn't match the dinner. $200+ for dinner for two, and two drinks each.

Really enjoyed our dinner. The weather was perfect. The service was great. The music was upbeat. The food was pretty good for a boat.

We did the 2 hour 7pm boat and had a great time. There is all day happy hour currently on Wednesdays, so we took advantage of that. The happy hour only applies to the dock bar, not the boat. The food was okay - the lobster mac and cheese bites were good and the lobster roll was delicious, although on the smaller side. I would say the service was good, not sure how it is on the weekends with a larger crowd. The ride itself is a lot of fun, good music, and beautiful views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. Would def recommend!

I took my wife and kids to the 7:00 pm trip, which is the longest. I ordered the Lobster 🦞 dinner , which I thought would be different (more flavor, not so simple) they don't have a kids menu, which I think they would 🤔 about adding them to the Menu. The atmosphere was really GOOD and the trip is very pleasant.
