"The thing most people don’t realize about Big Bear is that there is a whole other side of the lake. What the north side might lack in ski resorts and Sizzlers, it makes up for with giant rental homes, great views, and the sleepy little town of Fawnskin. And in the center of Fawnskin is North Shore Cafe. The all-day roadside diner has been around for decades and serves a solid breakfast as well as sandwiches, burgers, and salads during the day. If you’re looking for an unaffected Big Bear experience devoid of all tourists, a quick lunch at North Shore Cafe is a must." - Brant Cox

LOVED this place. Such a gem on the North side. When my wife and I took a weekend getaway up to Big Bear, we decided to take our bikes and ride around the lake. Saw this place on the ride and said “let’s try that before we leave today” drove over after the ride and so glad we did. Look at this food! It was DELICIOUS. Honestly, forget the main steam stuff on the south side (though we did eat at a cool place there and it was good). This place however is a must stop. We got bread pudding, French toast, and I think a cheeseburger and chili omelet.... don’t judge....it was a long bike ride! ;)

What to say? We've been visiting here for 15 or 20 years now..even when we lived on the other side of the world, When home I made sure to visit Richard and his beautiful Bride. Years ago they had a big menu....everything is handmade there. WoooHooo. Theres my review! My bar is pretty high. Probably the best burger Ive ever had. I owned my own Steakburger restaurant. This burger is on par with mine. Absolutely delicious. Cant wait to return.

Google
Came here Sunday for my family trip. Didn't know big bear was in purple tier. Every restaurant is outdoor dinning only. I was happy to be North Shore Cafe early and avoid to wait in crowded line. Sitting out door with snow and tall tree. It was super enjoyable. Food is good. It is still hot when we eat it. No decorations but we were enjoyed them. The only complain is the talking machine taking hard time to order. Overall, I like to dining here better than Dining in big bear lake village

Google
Came in for a breakfast meal... WOW!!! Food was delicious, ambiance was perfect.. our waiter Sky was super sweet and nice, easy to talk to. This was our first time here, I definetly recommend and will be back next time we are in town.

Google
I hate to leave bad reviews but this was atrocious. I ordered a polish sausage and cheddar omelet which was the only good thing my family got. We got orange juice and it tasted like it was fermented and was sparkling. We also got an English muffin which they didn't toast...it was simply soaked in butter 🤷‍♂️. My hash browns were still raw and had no spices or anything.

Google
Very quaint rustic casual atmosphere. Our choir group took a lunch break there during our retreat. We had a great time. Everyone enjoyed their sandwiches. One person in our group had came earlier in the morning and had their breakfast omelet said it was the best he ever had and he said he's had had many and this place had the BEST, which I would say that says a lot!

Google
Came across this place today and couldn’t be happier - had a lovely breakfast with mimosa! Perfect morning spot in my opinion. It wasn’t too crowded, very peaceful and the food was very good. Will definitely come back again!

Google
Great breakfast and nice spot!! Large size plates and food is delicious!

PT H.

Yelp
Although I only post 2 items, we actually had their bread pudding French toast. We also ordered sides of sausages and their English muffin was really good too. All the orders were delicious. The service was pretty good too. Ambiance casual

Christian J.

Yelp
This place have the best food ... everything are super good ... place is clean and neat ... I can highly recommend it to everyone... Tasty tasty tasty

Mica L.

Yelp
A cute, cozy little shack. The lady who took our orders was soooo nice. My husband and I both got sandwiches, our kids got a burger. The portions were way bigger than we thought, so you really get your moneys worth and a little extra! We were very happy with our turkey sandwich, ham sandwich and cheddar burger. Don't underestimate this little place. They also have a great craft beer selection, I REALLY loved that chocolate stout!

Sydney L.

Yelp
Can't say enough amazing things about North Shore Cafe! The food was absolutely incredible. I've never had better French toast in my life. The service was even better. The staff was so friendly and helpful. North Shore is so cozy and is a perfect representation of the Fawnskin community.

Ernesto A.

Yelp
Took a drive from our cabin to this one place to try it out before they stop serving breakfast at 11:30am. My wife ordered the French toast and I ordered the chorizo burrito. My wife's French toast was okay nothing special came with prepackaged syrup served on a paper plate and tray which I thought was a bit odd. The chorizo burrito was good but honestly something I could make at home easily nothing special. Served with hash browns and packets of ketchup. I wouldn't recommend this place, it was a bit of a drive and not really worth it.

Yelp
While staying in Fawnskin over the Easter weekend, I popped in here for some breakfast to-go. The restaurant was warm, clean and nice. A lovely woman with blond hair took my order. The food portions are so generous! The best fluffy pancakes I've had. I will definitely be back the next time I'm visiting.

Grace N.

Yelp
I really like this place. Mostly because it is away from all the craziness Big Bear City brings (including the people). This restaurant sits on the other side of Big Bear lake, well, the only cafe on this side actually. So if you find yourself here, Fawnskin, you don't really have much of a choice probably unless you want to drive all the way around back to Big Bear City/Village area. During Covid, they completely close the inside and it is not accessible for customers at all, even the restroom. Which is understandable because it is a mom and pop place and the inside is small anyway. You order through the Intercome, which in my opinion makes the sweet lady's voice really hard to hear. The intercome is loud but it kind of scramble her voice... The sweet lady would take your order when you are ready and there is a side window where you come to get your food when she calls you. Please be patient with her, she is working hard and I'm sure they are all working hard in the kitchen. Seatings are all outdoor. There was lots of snow when we came this time so maneuvering past the snow or puddle of melted snow could be a challenge. Space is very limited and so is parking so if you pass by it and there is no parking, you know there is no seating at the moment. Nonetheless, I would still recommend this place because it is tucked away on the other more peaceful side of Big Bear. Food is very basic so don't expect fancy or try to customize your orders, they won't do it. Breakfast menu stops at noon and Lunch menu starts at 11am. No substitution. No special order. The end! :)

Yelp
Cold turkey & Swiss sandwiches are AMAZING! My husband and I just happened to stumble around this cafe. And I'm glad we did!

Lisa H.

Yelp
This is a nice little cafe with seating inside and outside. There are 2 unisex bathroom in the back. There is a cute shelf next to the register for those who purchase tea. It also has all of the condiments, napkins, I think utensils, and a display of their current bottled beers and wines. The food are brought out on large thick disposable plates. The hot drinks are in disposable cups that won't burn your hands. I had the Ham and Swiss sandwhich which had nice thick cuts of ham, with cheese on the bottom and top bread. I like that it came with pickles and cut hot chilli peppers. I chose the side salad and ate all of it except the cheese was too hard. Overall I enjoyed it and would give it 3-4 stars. My husband got the cheeseburger with the side of potato salad. He gives his food and house coffee three stars. Do keep in mind that the service is a bit slow because there seems to be only one cook, and one person at the counter taking the orders & also brings the food. So be patient, she is very nice.

Jim B.

Yelp
Fawnskin is such a neat little town that it is really sad to see the downtown struggle financially. Many of the businesses have closed and there's no sign they are coming back anytime soon. We started coming to the cafe for breakfast years ago and always loved it. We left the area and came back recently to visit our old "go to cafe" and although it has changed some, it survived the pandemic and the owners are still working hard to provide good food and a cozy spot to eat. This time we stopped for lunch and had burgers while enjoying the peaceful Fawnskin vibe. This is a nice alternative to the busy downtown across the lake at Big Bear.

Mike S.

Yelp
Great little place on the north shore shore of big bear lake in fawnskin. We chose it because we figured it may not be as crowded as a place in big bear and we go that way leaving BB. Great food and fantastic service. My eggs and hamburger patty were wonderful and I swear the hamburger patty was bigger than 1/2 pound. Wifeys omelette was a winner with her too. They don't skimp on the portions and they had a nice different selection of beers although it was morning and I didn't try any. Will definitely be back next time.

Hannah S.

Yelp
Adorable little spot on the north shore of the lake. Great service and very generous portions. Nice outdoor seating. Would definitely come back!

Yaya A.

Yelp
Stop by here at North Shore Café for lunch had five different items chicken artichoke sandwich jalapeño burger, pastrami, and two cheeseburgers and wow amazing all will definitely come back

Jacqueline R.

Yelp
The food is sooooo delicious, and the service is super friendly and quick! Best artichoke and mozzarella omelette I've ever had! This restaurant has a very relaxing atmosphere, too. It is just far enough away from all the buzz of the town that it doesn't get too busy. You can just sit back and enjoy your meal in peaceful silence. This place is perfect in every way, and we'll definitely be back!

Maurice E.

Yelp
Besides the 30+min wait, the sandwiches me and my father ordered were way more delicious that we expected. The menu doesn't really give details on exactly what's in the sandwiches and what type of bread they use but I want to go back and find out what's in them. Next time I'm in Big Bear, this will be my first stop when I'm hungry. Be prepared to wait though, it's a small restaurant

Jay J.

Yelp
Had an excellent meal here for breakfast. We got the French toast special and a sausage and egg special. The lady that works the front is very nice and the service was speedy. Nice atmosphere as well. Would've been good to come here before going snow boarding.

Silvia R.

Yelp
Waited about 40 minutes for our food but I can't complain . I will sit there in the blazing heat for the delicious food . The kids had pastrami sandwich with and hubby and I had the Turkey sandwich with potatoes and pineapple cole slaw If you're in Big Bear go check out this little cafe , be prepared to wait but I promise you'll love i

C P.

Yelp
Don't stop, not worth your time waiting for a sandwich.Came for a late lunch, very slow and everything is in paper cups. The food is ok despite the delay.

Kevin D.

Yelp
Food came out all together, service was nice and helpful, EVERYTHING was delicious! The vibe was relaxed and welcoming

Keith K.

Yelp
Wife and I had breakfast. I had the two eggs and Polish Sausage. She had the two egg breakfast. Portions were just about right. Food was good. I liked the way they do the hash browns. Looks to be a two person show. Lady at the counter was nice. Good but not great hence the 4 stars.

Valerie S.

Yelp
A hidden gem in Big Bear. Big portions; easy enough to split. Delicious food and a cozy atmosphere. Outside and inside seating. Friday to Sunday, 8am to 5pm. Breakfast until 11:30am.

Nick A.

Yelp
Best place in the north shore to get something to eat. Barbara is the best she is super sweet and always remembers us

Rick S.

Yelp
We went here for dinner, we were in town with family. It's a nice restaurant and it wasn't busy when we went. They do have a big menu and lots to choose from. I ordered the Asian chicken salad. The menu said it had the chef's special sauce. So I thought I'd give it a try The sauce was very salty and it over powered any other flavors. I was very displeased. Other's in my party found the food here to be disappointing.

Susana L.

Yelp
This last weekend we ordered the Pastrami sandwich because it's the best on the mountain !! Had it with a side of pinneaple Slaw. Unusual, but quite good. I wanted to try something new, so I ordered the Roasted beef sandwich with house salad on the side. The sandwich was very tasty, but way too big for me, so I kept half for later. The house salad with balsamic vinagrette was very good; it had Parmesan shavings and cherry tomatoes. Great experience as always, thanks to Barbara and Chef Richard.

Jami J.

Yelp
Pastrami sandwiches are my thing and this place has the best I've ever had in my life! Seriously! The grilled cheese sandwich was also very good. We had the potato salad with our sandwiches which was delicious too, tasted homemade! We highly recommend. Check the hours before coming because they're only open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Jane S. B.

Yelp
Stopped by with my wife and sister in law. Expected just a decent meal for lunch, but was pleasantly surprised to have a very tasty grilled cheese sandwich, while my wife and sister in law had the best pastrami sandwich they had ever had !! Ever .... The proprietor was very sweet and accommodating. Looking forward to trying their breakfast menu out I highly recommend you checking it out for yourselves

Rosanna L.

Yelp
We were in the area during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. We were driving around Big Bear lake and was looking for a place to eat. We found ourselves at the only restaurant that was open in Fawnskin, this small little North Shore Cafe in Fawnskin. When we arrived all the tables were occupied. We waited for about 20 minutes and were seated at a small table in the back corner. We were a party of 5 (3 adults and 2 babies). They only had 1 high chair available for us. Good thing we had a small booster that we keep in the car just in case. We decided to order from the lunch menu since we had already had breakfast. We ordered the teriyaki burger with side of cream of asparagus, the bacon cheeseburger with a side of steamed broccoli, and the duck sandwich with a side of pasta salad. It took a long time for the food to arrive. I think they weren't expecting so many people and at least 4 tables had all arrived at the same time. My two nephews were getting fussy by that time. It was way past their nap time. So they were screaming and causing havoc. The food finally arrived. First off, all the burgers and sandwiches were delicious. They were huge. You got to customize how you liked the burger patty. I got mines medium. You can tell the burger was made from scratch and not the frozen patties. The sides were just okay. The steamed broccoli was a little undercooked. The cream of asparagus was way too thin...not enough flour to thicken it and it was also pretty bland in taste. We didn't finish it. The pasta salad was good, a nice tangy flavor. Service was very good. They were pretty attentive even though they were pretty busy. They even brought out 2 waters in cups with lids for the kids when we didn't even ask. Prices ranged between $10-$26 (the seafood and steak items were on the high side). They have parking right outside of the restaurant and offer outside seating as well. If I'm in the area again, I'll probably want to try their breakfast items. Heard the bread pudding french toast is good.

Sandra S.

Yelp
Wonderful staff, delish chocolate mild and such a cute location! We did our daily round of Big Bear lake, looking for coffee and hit the right spot!

Stella C.

Yelp
Cute spot w outdoor seating on accoubt of covid There is an intercom system utilized for safety of patrons and staff. We got omelets which were packed w tons of ingredients and spices along with toast hash browns and a short stack of pancakes. I liked that the portions were big.

Hung-Hei Y.

Yelp
I had a pretty amazing scramble at North Shore Cafe while staying in a cabin in Fawnskin. Spinach tomato and gouda eggs along with toast and hash browns. Portions were generous. Will try more items when I'm in town again. Nice little outdoor sitting area.

Diana G.

Yelp
Their Orange juice is Sunny Delight. A cup cost like $6! Not worth it. Food was ok. Not much variety. It's. A cute little restaurant. But the lady taking the orders was very sweet.

Jonathan Z.

Yelp
Obviously located on the North side of Big Bear Lake, North Shore Cafe is a very small restaurant. There are around 10 tables inside and 6 more outside. We had a packed house during breakfast and the indoor noise was extremely high, so if you want to actually hear your party go ahead and eat outside. The waiting service were very nice people. Take your time because service is expected in a small town cafe and is a little on the slow side. I ordered a coffee, which was good. Also got the corned beef hash, which came with 3 eggs and 4 slices of toast. The meal tasted fine. The corned beef hash was a little mushy, the toast more toasty, but the eggs were a nice over medium as ordered. North Shore Cafe is a good place to fill up on a Big Bear Trip. It's away from the hustle of the other side of town and the portions will fill you up nicely.

Marilyn E.

Yelp
So we kept hearing about their french toast a d how amazing it was so we had to go try it for ourselves and boy it was really good. So soft and ugh it was amazing and has landed a spot on my top favorite french toasts. The workers were so nice too. The server complimented my hat and it made my hat lol and the inside is nice and clean

Cecelia C.

Yelp
After a beautiful hike to Grays peak my hiking buddies and I had lunch here today. The food was delicious. I had the pastrami sandwich. We didn't mind the long wait but they only had one waitress who was taking orders at the front and delivering food to all the customers. She was very nice. I've been here a few times and always try to eat here after a hike in Big Bear.

Mikey M.

Yelp
We had lunch here yesterday and it was awesome. The lady that served us was very helpful and the sandwiches we had were top notch. Definitely coming back here again!!

Ryan T.

Yelp
Mind-blowingly delicious! Im a tough food critic, this place knows how to make a pastrami sandwich. Possibly the best pastrami sandwich I've ever had. Can't stop thinking about it so going back today for a second round.

Jim M.

Yelp
My wife and I had the pleasure of having breakfast there. Everything was delicious. Truely got our money's worth. We now have a regular cafe to visit while visiting Big Bear.

Jared E.

Yelp
Arrived at North Shore Cafe because of the photos. Looked like a nice place to go for breakfast. The omelet we ordered came out looking black. See the photo. Looks like it was cooked in a frying pan that hasn't been cleaned out in some time. Needless to say we did not touch the inlet. The French toast that was ordered tasted like cardboard. I think that it was frozen and then cooked which created that taste. My mom use to do the same thing when I was a kid. The banana nut pancakes were the only highlight. They were pretty tasty. So between the three of us we finished the short stake of banana nut pancakes. I would. It recommend this place if your expectation is to have quality food. It's a nice atmosphere but that's about it.

V S.

Yelp
Really great lunch! Stopped in with my wife after a bike ride along the lake and enjoyed a fresh and tasty meal. Grilled Artichoke sandwich was stuffed with artichokes, bacon and cheese...very tasty. And side salad with vinegar eggs was fresh and very enjoyable as well. Expected an average sandwich place and found a gem.

Carly B.

Yelp
Food came out freezing cold After 45 min of it sitting in the kitchen Normally I liked this place but service has seriously declined. My breakfast was just sitting in the back of the kitchen for 45 min Who does that ???

Mai M.

Yelp
Who needs some breakfast this week or next?! Please support local and get some amazing breakfast and dinner ( dinner only Fri-Sat) TOGO from Northshore cafe. It's so goooodd! I guaranteed !! So many of times my husband and I spent countless hours here and have good food, awesome waitresses with face of smile. During summer time we enjoy outside tables with our dogs and also they have bowls of water for your 4 paws too. Unfortunately this meal was our last meal of our Big Bear journey in 8-9 years. we hope we can come up and enjoy our breakfast some day. Last, we would like everyone know none of restaurant beat this place we never disappointingly we very satisfied and appreciate to chef Richard and Chef Barbara whom made our meals so fantastic. Love you guys. Mai & Dana (March 20, 2020)

Yelp
Started out on the Big Bear side of the lake on a Sunday afternoon. After waiting for over 45 minutes to even be offered water at a "on the lake" Big Bear restaurant. We left & drove to beautiful peaceful Fawnskin. With trepidation we ordered at the North Shore Cafe. Seemed like very nice people but for me its All about the food. BEST Roast Beef Sandwich EVER! Chef has got skills! When we ordered I thought it was a bit expensive but after seeing the portions I quickly changed my mind. I had the best salad too! For some reason a lot of restaurants up in Big Bear don't serve salad. North Shore Cafe's salad is super fresh & healthy. The cheese was like real parmesan thick slices or.. (NorthShore? what was that cheese on my salad? Num). My husband Loved the Turkey sandwich and Potatoe salad. If you can stand the calories... Order the bread pudding... there's a bit of shredded carrot in it. Thank you, North Shore. We can see that you truly care to serve quality. PS... Dog friendly!

Andy H.

Yelp
Stopped by here before heading out from camping 2 nights in Big Bear. Ordered a turkey sandwich and honestly I was surprised how good it was. The lady that helped us was super nice and overall great experience. Next visit I gotta try the BBQ burger w/fried jalapeños. Will be back for sure!

Sven S.

Yelp
We were in Big Bear for the weekend. On Saturday we drove around for what seemed like forever trying to find a good place for breakfast. On Sunday I hopped on Yelp to find a place that wouldn't be as busy. We decided on the Northshore. When we got there, there was only one couple seated. We ordered our breakfast and sat outside, our food came really fast, we both had the bread pudding french toast. It was amazing, I definitely recommend this place.

Noelle G.

Yelp
Small cafe with basic breakfast meals and I was happily surprised they had wine and beer selections! The room had about ten tables that could seat 4 people at each table. It was busy when I was there. I wouldn't be surprised if this is one of the only restaurants in Fawnskin. I am new to Fawnskin (family vacation home purchased recently) but already love the small town feel! The women who served me had her daughter there which I thought was awesome since they would chat between table service. I really felt at home and the food was like family cooking. It was not five star famous cook but five star mom and pops atmosphere. I got the two eggs scrambled with bacon and hash browns with wheat toast. I plan to go back when I am in town.

Cindy K.

Yelp
The burgers were delicious! The place is cozy and the service was excellent. We had the teriyaki burger and the cheddar burger-both were juicy and full of flavor. The Pattie's were thicker than the buns . Definitely get the potato salad-so mustardy and flavorful.

Tim C.

Yelp
Wonderful little Cafe with great food and friendly service. Place is small but you can sit outside. Place had a steady stream of people. Breakfast I hear is great but they cut it off around 11. I had a buger that was big and juicy.

Lily G.

Yelp
The pancakes were fluffy and delicious! Freshly brewed coffee and awesome service. The patio seating is pet friendly which I loved. The drive here was with beautiful view of the mountains and lake.

Eric R.

Yelp
I'm still drooling just thinking of their hot pastrami sandwich....bravo. Sweet older lady doing her best to accommodate amid COVID restrictions and outside dining. If the tall chef w/ dark hair is cooking GET THE PASTRAMI and you won't regret it! Not overly stuffed but you can tell he warms the meat on the grill with butter and mustard w/ pickles and perfectly melted cheese on toasted buttered Brioche bun. I was very extremely surprised and going to order another one just to take a photo of it...but we had to jet. Homemade food and home-steady vibe...not cheap but places like this are impossible to find anywhere!
