Where to Eat and Drink During Yakima’s Fresh Hop Ale Festival - Eater Seattle

"Before hitting the festival — or to perk up the morning after — locals pop by this essential cafe for Stumptown coffee and local snacks. Located in an old train station, the space oozes history and charm. Between the lofty ceiling and delicate tiled floor there’s lots of comfy seating, ample elbow room for getting work done, and copious natural light." - Alisha McDarris

Sat and listened to a group of girls have a Bible study today, the sun was shining and the warmth of the sun was coming through. I had a delicious cup of coffee. I wish I would have taken a picture of the beautiful heart shaped cream that the barista served me, it was such a nice way to start the day!! The station is clean, plenty of space to sit and chat, meet, do homework. Nice seating area outside as well. Yeah it's a little more than a regular coffee shop but well worth it!

Best espresso in town! Fantastic cortado. The staff are awesome. After the remodel, the place looks better than ever. Plus the historic train depot aesthetic is iconic Yakima!

Google
Well, let me tell you something about this coffee house. This coffee house is somewhere where you want to go to enjoy your coffee. surround with some friendly workers and friendly human beings from young to elders. I even met a famous wrestler, Art crews in the Northtown coffee House. Like I said, if you like to enjoy your coffee in the morning with a good atmosphere, this is the place.

Google
Such a beautiful cafe in Yakima county, they had so many nice options for coffee, but what really made this place special was the different kinds of tea they had - jars upon jars of tea leaves. We got a pumpkin spice latte and blueberry tea, both heavenly delicious. The server was very nice as well. The interiors of the cafe were huge with antique decor, chandeliers and plush sofas, the ceilings were so high, Its rare to see such architecture for a cafe. You can also rent a room for group study sessions for $10 an hour. There were many students there working and studying. I would definitely recommend.

Visiting Yakima - drove by early in the morning to see the old Nortkern Pacific station while my wife was getting ready. Saw the coffee shop - a perfect win-win! The Stumptown coffee and batista were both great. The atmosphere in the former waiting room was fantastic. Worth the trip... hope Amtrak returns to Yakima soon.

Google
Must visit for the vibes and the atmosphere. It's an old train station which has been converted to a coffe house. Multiple seating areas which can be used as per your mood. Antique furnitures and decor.

Google
Crispy and lightly umami, the sourdough turkey panini with provolone hit the spot! I'm grateful for the airy, yet solid atmosphere with multiple nooks and open seating areas. Humble and kind staff, plus a safe location to let down make this a repeat local coffee shop in my book. A great place to read, journal, chat, or pray!

Google
I'm not much of a coffee drinker, but this is a cool spot! Located in an old train station, this is one of the best places in town to meet and get a drink. Fortunately, they have lots of great non-coffee drinks! On this particular trip, I opted for the soda stream soda. They had a bunch of different flavors. Others in my group got coffee drinks and were all very happy. North Town Coffeehouse is a great place. There are a ton of tables and comfy chairs that you can sit at! Groups of all sizes can find a comfortable setting here!

Yelp
You already know a coffee shop is good when it uses Stumptown Coffee. It's just SO good! I stopped in and the barista was so sweet and personable. I got an iced vanilla almond oat milk latte and it was great! I asked for it less sweet and it was perfect. I give this place a 4.5/5 since I wish they had some house-made syrups for coffee (they use Monin). I definitely recommend stopping here in Yakima! P.S. after 4pm, any drink is BOGO free!

Yelp
I wish we had a coffee shop like this near Tacoma!! It's cozy, welcoming, spacious, clean and adorable!

Yelp
Chill place to work while on the road. Lots of seating in various arrangements. Put on a headset and drank a nice latte while working.

Yelp
Very good cold brew and excellent barista! - nice vibe with classic rock Side note: Yelp needs to ease off on review requirement -

Yelp
My husband and I got married here! Amazing setting, employees and easy for a small wedding. Best day ever!!!

Sidonie J.

Yelp
The coffee is to die for! I'm a freak for a good cup of coffee. The fact that it's in a old train station is absolutely amazing. So much space, if I lived here I would be spending a lot of time hanging out and doing homework here.

Yelp
Not sure how my bf discovered this place, but I'm grateful that he has introduced me to it. The vibe in here is so chill. Maintains a good low level of noise so it's perfect for catching up on work, reading etc. I'm a big fan of the iced americanos here, haven't had one from a barista here that didn't meet my standard. Overall it is a big beautiful building with lots of spacious seating and a nice feeling environment, surrounded by other equally gorgeous historic buildings.

Yelp
We stopped by on the way to walla walla. Love the building. It is located in a historic building probably a railway station across from the city hall. Lots of character. Coffee was so so.

Lucia Y.

Yelp
A good place to hangout with wifi, plenty of chairs and tables. Coffee is not consistently good with different baristas, pastries don't look fresh
google avatar

Rohan T.

Yelp
This used to be the old train station... Awesome coffee!!! Plenty of space of sit.. amazing building!
google avatar

Gary W.

Yelp
Great place to brew and chill. While they have wifi access for convenience for a calm getaway to do work on laptop or gather for meeting colleagues or friends nice location great selection.
google avatar

Sammantha R.

Yelp
The coffee is delicious! The space was empty, which is interesting but I'm guessing 1) they just reopened 2) not that many people work in coffee shops in this city. This place would be crowded in any other city. My americano was $4, which is high, but the quality of beans and roast from Stumptown made up for it.
google avatar

Yelp
Thank you for the exception service and wonderful coffee! This place made my morning after having a horrible experience at a coffee place close by! Thank you!

Emily B.

Yelp
Got married here and it was really quick and really nice. The judge was so cool! I loved that it is an old train station. Made it kind of nostalgic!
google avatar

Mindy S.

Yelp
They use stumptown coffee! So, what's great is... you don't even need to put flavors in your coffee because it's so delicious! This is the best coffee shop in town. I wish they would sell the bags of coffee too! Darn it! Great customer service and a cool vibe but the place is worn down and needs a makeover. Carpet/walls/chairs. I get my coffee to go and that's all good for me. Saw a guy with two giant monitors set up on a table playing video games the last time I was in there... that was weird. Lol I don't get it...‍‍

Yelp
Northtown Coffee is one of those places that is done so well that it defines what a genre of food/beverage should be for an area. I've heard about it for years, but only recently had the chance to come and experience it. Having been here twice in the past 4 days, it is declared our favorite coffee spot for 2016! This spot is housed in the old train station and has maintained it with incredible integrity. You walk in and immediately see the incredible melding of the architecture from a century ago, interposed with a coffee shop that respects the past, but wants you to be 21st century caffeinated! I was most impressed by the fact with the seating and the number of different rooms they have available. Out front is the "Garden room" - a glass enclosure with foliage and plenty of outdoors type seating. Great place to sit back and relax! The interior has seating options including some large chairs and couches around a fireplace, plenty of traditional seating around the periphery and some larger group study spaces. Dedicated study and meeting rooms can be rented for $10/hour and provide an incredibly cool and convenient way to get things done. Perhaps the coolest things (from my better half and my perspective) is the Kids room that is located just off the main area. Tons of toys and books give the kiddos a place to get their play on, while you chillax with some boss espresso! The menu here is pretty expansive and includes everything from standard brew to cold press tea (think incredibly slow drip through ice!). For those who love their Stumptown - they gots Stumptown coffee! The iced options include normal and Nitro, both of which are lovely. The folks working the counter are totally chill and give this place an unexpected and welcome vibe. If you haven't been here, you need to be. Whether pre-dinner espresso, a late night rendezvous or an eye opener to start they day, they're open early to late, so there's no real excuse not to check it out.

Yelp
Love it first time from Florida this post has the best coffee and they have a lot of options the waitress was good they can make things how you like and I m a picky person ;)
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
I was really excited to try this place while visiting from Seattle. "Good coffee in an old train station? WOW." Except I wasn't able to find the good coffee. I was not impressed by the iced latte I had. Too many better options around.

Pete P.

Yelp
I wish I would have got the young woman's name to share with you, if you're looking for gelato, this is a top choice right inside the railroad station downtown. Having almost finished dinner at Tiger Z's, I was looking for a gelato place to complete our anniversary celebration, since that was our first date dessert. As I mapped this place, instead of 400 ft away, it was four blocks, and 10 minutes before closing, so I left my wife to finish dinner, and semi-ran part of the way to arrive one minute before closing, and the young woman offered two free gelatos for us after hearing the circumstances, what a friendly town! Another easy favorite if we pass through again!

Yelp
While on my extremely short stay in Yakima, this coffeehouse popped up on my radar and I decided to give it a shot. First off, the the atmosphere and ambiance were fantastic. Very chic antique retro style. I'm not a big coffee drinker so I can't speak to that selection, but I ordered a tea, which I was pleasantly surprised was loose leaf. They steeped it the proper amount of time. I had them ice it and they did. The drink was delicious. The service was good . And the server was .. Umm.. beautiful. I know that doesn't matter, but it helps. :). Definitely worth a stop if you are in town

Yelp
Spent lots of time studying at Northtown while I lived in Yakima for school. It was nice to be surrounded by others doing the same with PNWU nearby. Their drinks were good, fast service and friendly staff. Their gelato was where it was at for me. I loved both the white chocolate gelato and pistachio! Really miss those! The bathroom is unkept, whether you blame the vintage charm or lack of upkeep, it just appears dirty and dim. The lack of outlets near all the seating is a bit frustrating as most of us came in with some sort of technology and spent long hours there.

Yelp
Thank you for having great coffee. My latte was perfect. So hard to find really good coffee on the road. Cool spot on the original train depot. Also if you have a hankering to play chess, they have the real deal. But, you better have your game up because the competition looks tough.
google avatar

Yelp
The coffeehouse continues to offer excellent customer service, and great drinks in an amazing atmosphere. I continue to stay for hours, refilling my coffee and working on my job search and novel. I'm glad they now offer a star reward system by phone number to earn free drinks, makes things easier to track. I have only been here during the holidays, so its not too full, but that may change in a few months. I recommend NT Coffeehouse for any novelist, student, or individuals who work from home.
google avatar

E W.

Yelp
I really love the atmosphere and the history of this old building. The have a great thing going here. HOWEVER with that said, I feel the customer service should be top notch and really missed the mark. The barista didn't smile or greet us, and acted like it was a burden to help us. For that reason I won't be back . It's sad too because the atmosphere is awesome.

Yelp
Love this place! An old train station turned coffee shop. SO MANY different nooks and crannies to sit in! I came for a quick coffee but wish I could have stayed for days...
google avatar

Amy D.

Yelp
Probably the best coffee shop in Yakima. They serve Stumptown- a hip coffee roaster from Portland. It's nice to see that this coffee shop focuses more on COFFEE. Most coffee stands in Yakima try to make flavored Red Bull's the star of their shops without even taking account on coffee! Northtown is probably the only third wave coffee shop you'll find in Yakima. Northtown also has friendly and very talented baristas. There's two baristas there that always make latte art on my drinks!
google avatar

Lori F.

Yelp
Amazing coffee, atmosphere & service!! Don't miss this great coffee house hangout!!! They serve Stumptown coffee & their lattes are pure heaven!!! They are the best!!!
google avatar

Pat C.

Yelp
Don't get me wrong. The building is a masterpiece. Great atmosphere. But the coffee itself was just not on par for me. I'm not sure if it's the grinding machine or the coffee blend they use, but the aroma was not there. I would hope they make better coffee and I would be happy to come back.
google avatar

Chelsea B.

Yelp
Great coffee, super cool location and interior as it's a old train depot they have converted into a coffee shop. It's got tons of places to sit, relax or study. I got a iced coffee which was excellent but the baked good was very okay. I would suggest that they invest in another supplier for their baked goods or start making their own. Super great service, welcomed with a smile.
google avatar

Annie Q.

Yelp
been here a bunch. love the coffee train stop vibe. Super friendly servers! Best environment for studying and coffee in Yakima
google avatar

Shawn B.

Yelp
BEST COLD BREW IN THE AREA! I visited Yakima for a week and this coffee place saved my life! Their coffee is super strong and they have a nice cafe that's spacious with lots of outlets. The staff is cool, and I'll definitely be back when I'm in town.
google avatar

Yelp
Northtown Coffee is housed in the historic train station downtown. Burlington Northern chose to build for miles north of Union Gap making the area north Yakima. The station is beautiful and unique with a cathedral ceiling and decorative lion heads. It is a fascinating reminder of Yakima's past. Trains continue to pass by occasionally rattling the glass and shaking the floor. It makes meetings and coffee breaks interesting. There is space for meetings, lots of tables, small areas with comfortable furniture perfect for a small group. I like this place for meetings if you need room and privacy a separate meeting area is available to rent. They've got coffee drinks, chai, assorted food items and desserts. For me the attraction of this place is the amazing building and turn of the century architecture. First Avenue has a number of restaurants and a large (quirky) public sculpture. If you are in Yakima stop by.
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
I was in Yakima for a training and stumbled upon this place on my way out of town! Can't get over how cute the building was and the atmosphere. Definitely check this place out if you're in Yakima.

Elise M.

Yelp
Delicious coffee! Not many options for food and especially very little healthy options. That being said coffee is wonderful, atmosphere is beautiful and it would be a great place to work if you need. Staff offers the WiFi password and there are lots of tables and chairs to sit. Good for working and for a quiet place to snack.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Spacious, historic, warm, friendly, uncluttered and serving Stumptown coffee. Perfect. The sunroom is particularly unique and attractive (especially following a December snow storm) with huge windows, many plants, brick floors, comfy seating and a quaint, tricking fountain. The rest of the building is an historic train station. Large historic photos of the station radiate a sense of place that is almost immediate. The space imbues class and history, but isn't pretentious.

Valarie M.

Yelp
Coffee drinks are very expensive and most of the baristas are not properly trained in a manner that would make the drinks worth it. Inconsistent for sure. The atmosphere is relaxing and friendly and so are the staff. Stepping into the building is like stepping back in time especially when the trains go through.
google avatar

Yelp
Drop in to get a quick coffee on our road trip from Mt Rainier to Portland! Love the old train station, the white high ceiling, the tiled floors and the vintage sets and exit signs!

Andy B.

Yelp
I love this spot. It has tons of space to spread out. I would love to see more food options though.
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
So the coffee is not bad. A bit pricey but I really haven't seen a lot of places that could compare with it. Lots of seating and there are cozy chairs available to sink your backside into. The decor is across between a aged Parisian train station and a library within this cavernous retrofitted cafe. Music selection is sensitive to the numerous patrons that appear to be college students. I'll probably make this my landing spot during future trips to Yakima. All in all... not bad. 5 stars for making it happen in Yakima.
google avatar

Colin H.

Yelp
Alright I'm sold. Literally the only reason I might go with 4 stars instead of 5 would be having to spread my own cream cheese, which is something I'm prepared to do if I get to continue drinking this fantastic latte. I've been here twice already, in my 3 days into my stay in Yakima, and I'm sad I didn't use my credit card earlier, because the girl behind the counter did quite an impressive flip of my card up in the air and caught it. Something my incoherent brain couldn't fully process. My latte was excellent, the Stumptown coffee really makes it pop. The atmosphere in here is also unlike anything I've seen in other coffee shops, the old train depot turned coffee shop has a few different rooms, but personally the sun room is going to be my new spot to decompress before work. I know I could get a Costco membership and buy these bagels, but they're not overly expensive here and they toast if for you and what not. I'm not about to spend 100 bucks a year [Costco membership] just to get these bagels, even if they are the best bagels still in production that I've had. This is a more than adequate solution. Edit: Owner of North town coffee, the only thing accomplished by not letting us tip on card is the awkward shame of not having cash. Please save me the awkward moment of scrambling in my pockets to tip, only to find I don't have anything. Don't make your laziness my shame.
google avatar

Owen C.

Yelp
North Town has a great location inside an old train depot, friendly people and decent coffee. It doesn't quite reach the comfort of a "Third Place" because whoever runs the place decided to put signs everywhere setting forth lengthy rules on what is unacceptable. Rules are okay and necessary, but the wording is pretty officious, so that dampens the casual friendliness one expects from a coffee shop seeking repeat business. To use the WIFI, they give you a password slip so long and tricky that only Jason Bourne could enter it accurately (I gave up after two tries). The WIFI slip sets forth a usage policy that is long and officious, spelling our punishment for offenders. ("No WIFI for you -- three days!") I'm fine with a usage limit but why does the WIFI slip read like a traffic ticket? Lighten up, North Town.
google avatar

Bradley C.

Yelp
They use stptown coffee which is a plus right there. Warm friendly atmosphere. Beautiful location. The place for coffee in Yakima
google avatar

Yelp
Best coffee in Yakima. The morning barista was an absolute gem with me coming in with orders for 8 to 9 people. My go to place when visitng Yakima.
google avatar

Sharon B.

Yelp
I visit Northtown coffee every time I am in Yakima because it is fabulous!!!! Great coffee, personal friendly service, and a unique atmosphere. Best of all, even though I am only around about every other month, the cheery morning barista ALWAYS remembers me! That is simply remarkable!!!!
google avatar

Shar V.

Yelp
Great coffee! Decent food! And open until midnight. Definitely a good find in Yakima!
google avatar

Shane Y.

Yelp
Quaint is overused these days... but really what other word can you use for an over the top, hipster, coffee shop. Quaint, Awesome. I don't come to town often but when I do Northtown Coffeehouse is a stop. Friendly staff, good drinks and the raspberry brownie is delicious. If you are looking for a quick stop coffee shop not far form the convention center... this is the place!
google avatar

Jill R.

Yelp
What a neat place to get coffee. The coffee was spot on. Service was great. The building is an old train station.
google avatar

Melinna L.

Yelp
I would always come here to study, the coffee is good but not the service. The employees look annoyed and are rude. Every time I see Julian a barista I leave. He is rude and unhelpful. I also feel unwelcome when he looks at me.
google avatar

Jesse K.

Yelp
I'm from Yakima but have lived in California for the last 12 years. We have great roasters and craft coffee shops there. Today I'm in town for a cousin's wedding and was happy to find a coffee shop that served Stumptown (the Guatemalan Bella Vista is my all time fav). But even with great coffee, it takes a great barista to make a great drink. The cash register gal asked if I wanted a wet or dry capp which I've never been asked before so it threw me off. Update: Came back next day. Different barista. Not nearly as good. Then I asked if they do ristretto shots and she didn't know what that meant. To me a great drink is about both a texture and taste. My capp had a lot of bubbles which is a bad sign on the texture...I'm looking for velvety. But the texture turned out pretty well. Taste was pretty dang good too...didn't make me cream in my jeans or anything but I was happy with it. Just work on texture and staffs coffee knowledge and this place would a 5 star coffee shop. I'm happy that I will be able to get a good capp when I'm visiting family. Update: Came back next day. Different barista. Not nearly as good so I took a star away. Baristas should all be on the same level. It wasn't just my drink either. Both my mom and wife were also disappointed compared to yesterday's drinks.

Yelp
Such a cute coffeehouse and they make a delicious frappe with soy milk!! Will be back!
