Where to Find the Iconic Dishes of Minnesota | Eater Twin Cities

"Minnesota’s state fish is walleye, a freshwater fish that yields a flaky, mild-flavored white meat. A major traditional Indigenous food, it’s been feeding people on this land for a long, long time. The Cities’ longtime standby for walleye, Tavern on Grand, recently closed, but there are plenty other restaurants serving it around the metro — including the Tea House on University Avenue, which gives a Minnesota staple a traditional Anhui preparation, braising the fish and serving it whole, bones in." - Joy Summers

Find the Best Matcha Tea in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Northeast Tea House is the only shop in Minnesota, and possibly the country, to mill its own matcha powder using a stone mill imported from Japan. The process is mesmerizing, as is the shop itself. Owner Simon Perish recently transformed a former coffee shop into a peaceful, inviting oasis in the heart of Northeast Minneapolis. No lattes here, just the best sourced matcha whisked into elegant bowls and sipped slowly and mindfully." - Alex Lodner

Such an awesome place. I was given a gift card this tea shop and couldn’t wait to see it. It’s a great place and I really enjoyed taking a moment to appreciate the tea. I’ll be coming back!

Google
An oasis and the jungle. I come here after long shifts to pour myself tea, look at fish in the aquarium and just sit and unwind. Staff are kind and helpful. Don't order to go, slow down and ask for the gongfu. They'll walk you though how to brew at your table!

Google
This place is a must for any tea lovers! Especially for those looking for authentic flavors/options. I really enjoy the option to do gong-fu style brewing, and the menu has a good range on it. And the tea isn’t the only great thing, the snacks are also very tasty! The atmosphere is very warm and calming, and you can tell that a lot of thought has been put into the space. I’m new to the Twin Cities, and am really looking forward to making this my go-to spot for tea.

This was my third or fourth time at Northeast Tea House. Great tea selection, wonderful atmosphere, and floor seating (as well as tables/chairs). They offer some fun sweet treats as well (not permanent menu items necessarily).

I came here specifically for matcha—this is the only place I know of that grinds it fresh on-site. That was the one thing I felt was missing from the matcha I’d been drinking: something freshly ground and sold within days. I bought their most expensive matcha. It tasted incredible—vibrant, smooth, clearly high-quality. But it didn’t give me that intense, almost trippy feeling I used to get from another matcha I’d been buying online. That old one would sometimes shift my vision a bit, like the onset of a psychedelic experience. I always assumed that meant it was potent—packed with the compounds that make matcha so powerful. Still, I gave it another try. I bought the top-tier again ($50–$60 an ounce), same result: excellent tea, but no “wow” effect. So today, I mentioned it to the woman working there. I showed her the matcha I’d bought on Amazon, and she immediately recognized the region it came from. She pointed me to one of their matchas made in the same area—their least expensive one, actually, at $35 an ounce. I was skeptical, but I gave it a shot. Went home, made it properly, and by the sixth or seventh sip—boom—I was flying. That same sharp, vivid clarity was back. Not only is this a great place to buy top-tier matcha, but the staff clearly knows their stuff. I don’t know how deep everyone’s knowledge runs, but for someone to recognize a region in Japan and solve a problem like that on the spot? That’s seriously impressive. Five stars not just for the product, but for the level of knowledge and care. Truly an exceptional spot.

Google
The tea house is quiet and charming, with a cozy, inviting atmosphere. They have a thoughtful policy of discouraging electronics that make any noise or clicking sounds, like laptops, which helps maintain a peaceful environment. However, tablets and phones with touch screens are welcome, allowing for a relaxed, technology-light experience. I visited with some friends to try authentic matcha tea, and while we may not have the most refined taste for traditional teas, I found that matcha may not be “my cup of tea.” It was chalky, dry, and quite bitter, which might be true to its authentic flavor but wasn’t quite to my taste. That said, it’s definitely worth trying, especially if you’re curious about traditional teas! The service was attentive and friendly, though the prices felt a bit on the high side.

Google
Northeast Tea House is the best spot for tea in the entire Midwest. If you live anywhere within a two-hour drive, coming here is a must. Their serene atmosphere and soothing music, coupled with a mesmerizing live-coral fish tank, make Northeast Teahouse my go-to place for when I feel stressed. The staff are all very friendly and incredibly well-learned in different teas from across the world and give great recommendations based on your preferred flavor notes. Whether you’re just getting into teas or a seasoned expert, they have everything you could possibly want. There have been many times where I couldn’t make up my mind and a staff member recommended something that hit just the spot. They specialize in Gongfu, a traditional Chinese tea ceremony in which you pour tea between small vessels and watch (and taste!) as the color/flavor gradually deepens and becomes more complex. Highly recommend trying this! They also have a huge selection of freshly-milled matchas, hot or iced. Northeast Teahouse is one of only three locations in the U.S. to have a genuine matcha mill! Watching the mill at work is a unique experience and so cool to have right in the Twin Cities! They also work with small farmers across the world to provide exclusive tea cakes. Besides hot teas, they also have some great iced teas with fun flavors like soursop or lychee! These are great to-go on hot summer days. Additionally, they have a TON of delicious homemade baked goods: - Mochi (many different flavors) - Biscotti - Chocolate chip banana bread - Matcha shortbread - Earl grey and lavender cookies - Walnut cookies - Carrot cake - Seasonal items (like mooncakes for the mid-autumn festival) That’s not all! They also carry many beautiful tea sets, electric kettles, tea pets, tea cakes, and looseleaf by the ounce. I seriously cannot describe how beautiful some of these tea sets are. See the photos below!! Bottom line is – you’ve just gotta visit Northeast Tea House. It is an experience like no other, and you’ll find yourself making up any excuse to come back again and again. Take your mom there! Maybe a first date? Bring your friends! Come alone and enjoy your own company! Stare at the fish for hours!

Matcha was good! Definitely high quality, although I wish they had more varieties. Desserts were both yummy—we got the matcha cheesecake and red bean mochi.

Yelp
I love Northeast TeaHouse! There are so many amazing and unique options, the matcha is top tier quality with their own matcha mill, the service was great, employees were patient, kind, and great at explaining everything. There are delicious treats at a fairly low price point. The environment is calm and quiet, perfect place to relax, enjoy tea, and take your mind off of busy life. Northeast TeaHouse is a really special place in the Twin Cities.

Yelp
My husband surprised me with a trip to this tea house and Oh My Goodness I am in love! The staff was so pleasant and introduced me to different teas, showed me how they steep their tea, and even showed me how they process their own Matcha. I was in a really low mental space and the ambiance and tea really lifted my spirits. I plan to visit until I drink my way through the menu! So very satisfied with my visit today. I really needed it!

Yelp
I really enjoyed this spot! At first I thought $6 for tea seemed a bit much but it's a 16oz pot and is worth it. The tea is really good and full of flavor. The pastries were great. They heated up the banana bread for me. The ambiance is the best part tho! There's a lovely low lying, wooden communal table under the window. This is a place to relax! Not a place to work. I love their policy of no laptops or tablets and limited cell phone usage. Decor is great with very nice, quality stoneware tea sets for purchase. They'd make great gifts for someone special who really appreciates tea. Parking is a challenge in this area but paid spots are available on the street, in a small lot around the corner, and in ramps.

Yelp
Best Matcha and Tea House in Twin Cities I've been looking for a lower caffeine alternative to coffee and was recently turned on to the health benefits of green tea. When a friend told me that the Northeast Tea House in NE Mpls has the "best tea anywhere", I had to try it. It did not disappoint. Located near East Hennepin and University Ave, the Tea House offered sushi bar style seating where you can watch them make your tea, traditional tables or even a Japanese style tea table with comfy floor seating and warmers for your hot water. The service was friendly, patient and instructive, especially for those of us whose only experience with tea comes from a box in the pantry or a 16oz can from Kwik Trip. If you'd like to buy a gift for the tea snob in your life, they have a nice selection of tea sets, dried teas and tins of matcha. The matcha pairs well with the zen of the large aquarium - if you really want to escape.

Nianchen L.

Yelp
Please try their matcha if you're a big matcha fan who has a high standard for quality -- this store doesn't disappoint. The barista showed me three types of matcha and the cans of matcha powder. They are very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about tea when I asked about it. I knew the matcha is good from the vibrant green color unlike the matcha you typically find online with a yellowish brown color. The matcha doesn't disappoint -- without any milk or sweetener, it tastes perfect with beautiful aromatic notes.

Yelp
Northeast Tea House is a special place, really unlike anything else in the Twin Cities. You can experience Gongfu tea service here, where you're given a kettle and your selection of tea leaves to repeatedly steep and drink small cups of. It's a very shareable experience, and one any tea lover should try. They are also one of just two matcha mills in the US, making it a must-stop for matcha fans as well. If neither of these are quite what you're looking for, they also offer single cups of tea, iced tea, and baked goods that punch way above their weight. They encourage a screen-free environment here, creating a serene and grounded an environment. It's the perfect place to (quietly) catch up with a friend, or bring a book to read.

Yelp
The peaceful tranquility of this place is alluring in itself. I like the rule no laptops and other peripherals are allowed. The ambience was great; feels like you are in a teahouse in japan. The yellow tea i had was great. The matcha cheesecake was amazing wish it was bigger. The price point was not too bad about $6-7 for 6oz. Unfortunately, parking can be a challenge...there is some public street and parking ramps. However don't let it discourage you from going; it is a great first date spot!
google avatar

Haley N.

Yelp
Enjoyed the teas and ambiance. Service was friendly and helpful. Lots of variety. They do not have any sweeteners or milks. Will deff come back to try their matcha and do some reading. Street parking.

Yelp
There's a gorgeous fish tank here that sets the calm vibe. It makes it great to drink tea and have a little bite to eat. The tea is perfectly made and the moon cakes were a nice treat on the side.

Yelp
This is a great tea experience for those wanting an authentically prepared drink with a very zen ambiance. For matcha lovers, they mill their matcha in house where you can watch! I can imagine this is any tea lover's dream spot in Minneapolis. The tea and desserts are top notch -- it can be hard to find more authentic Asian foods and drinks but I feel like this place definitely fills that gap. I ordered the iced single house-milled matcha "Samidori" flavor and it was basically what I anticipated: matcha over ice. I usually enjoy a matcha latte with sweetener but I did know what to expect before coming. I wouldn't say my palate is refined enough to be able to discern different matcha flavors so I can't speak too much on that, but the description of the flavor profile was "Apple, rose water, pastry." My friend ordered an iced "Silly Rabbit" (Yunnan Yellow Tea w/ Lychee and Soursop Syrups) and that one was my favorite. It tasted kind of like a peach green tea lemonade from Starbucks, but fresher. We also ordered the chocolate chip banana bread (yum!) and melon and yuzu mochi. I was pleasantly surprised with the mochi. I had never had the yuzu flavor, but it was a citrus-like flavor and I really liked it! The place itself is well decorated and feels like you stepped into a whole different atmosphere than the bustling and busy construction-filled streets outside. They have nice, calming music playing inside as well as a big fish tank with cool fish. It's a very relaxing space to be in. They had a long table with floor cushions for people to sit on and there are tea pots placed on every table there. I don't know too much about tea and its serving practices, but I can see how tea enthusiasts would feel right at home at Northeast Tea House.

Yelp
What a gem!!! I'm a "matcha latte from a local coffeehouse" girlie, but the employees here made their more traditional tea options so accessible to me! They are so educated about matcha and what you might enjoy the most, and don't judge you if you've only ever had matcha with milk, too! :) I had an iced drink that was matcha with a white tea base, and I did really love it. Also, it is so remarkably peaceful inside it felt like walking into a spa. I wish I was local to have such a "breath of fresh air" afternoon treat nearby locally!

Yelp
In-house milled matcha was excellent. Really appreciated that it wasn't pre-sweetened. Staff was knowledgeable and helpful, the menu was a little confusing at first but they will explain it. Good tea selection. They have iced and hot teas. Nice ambiance, will definitely go back.

Yelp
A lovely and unique tea house for the Twin Cities. Great place to relax and enjoy a conversation. It was busy when we were there and took awhile to get our tea but there was only one worker there (the only reason for my 4 out of 5 stars). However tea is not something to be rushed so go with that in mind and you won't be disappointed. We went with our son and he didn't get too bored thanks to the large fish tank. They have a wide variety of tea and our black tea tastes delicious. Will hopefully be back for a date night with my wife.

Yelp
Literally the best Tea experience I've ever even heard of much less experienced in the USA. Minnesota...you are sooooo fortunate to have this Tea House.

Tuhin C.

Yelp
This was such a cool find and it reminded me exactly of the tea-houses that you find in Asia! Of note, the place is more of a place to have meetings with others and they request that laptops aren't used here (I was originally going to come here earlier in the day to get some work done, but I saw the notice and decided to stop by a bit later). They have a ton of different teas to choose from and a lot of seating. I went with the Matcha - they serve really truly authentic matcha here and I didn't realize it wouldn't be sweet, but the owner was so nice to give me a free mochi on the house to balance between the tastes of sweet and savory which I thought was a very kind gesture. I hope to come back one day to spend time and it'd be a nice place to journal, read, or hangout with friends!
google avatar

Delaina G.

Yelp
Very cool tea spot. Their matcha was delicious! The powder is a bit pricey but you're definitely getting what you pay for! Loved the sitting area with the cushions.

Melody F.

Yelp
A true tea lover's spot. I avoided coming here for a long time because I thought it was matcha only, which didn't interest me, but their tea menu is in fact much more extensive. The tea is perfectly steeped and ready to enjoy quickly from the small cups. It has flavor! Discernible fruit or toasted rice or grass or milky notes. Most tea served at coffee shops is scalded, over steeped or too much leaf to water ratio, and therefore bitter or tannic. It's an afterthought to a coffee focused service, which is what makes a tea house like Northeast so special. Another remarkable thing about this business is the focus on enjoying the experience. Patrons are not on their laptops - there is no in house wifi. People are socializing, or reading, or counting how many hermit crabs are in the aquarium. To serve only tea and not be a work spot - two great ways to swim against the tide and it hasn't stopped them from being successful.

Yelp
My girlfriends and I met up on a Sunday afternoon for tea time. I did the gongfu tea service with white tea. A few friends got Matcha with dessert and small pots of their own tea. It was a fun way to catch up and chit chat the afternoon away. There were a few other small groups in there as well. The counter service was very helpful and knowledgeable to help us pick out our beverages of choice. If you sign up for their email list on their website you get a 20% off coupon to use. So glad Yelp Elite introduced me to this hidden gem!

Yelp
Update for 2022, we love to stop here monthly for a gong fu tea service and I love seeing how steady their patronage has been. On a weekend we have had to cram into a spot since they've been so full. We have a few gift cards here so we'll continue to stop by but I am eternally sad that they don't have vegan vitals any longer. Their mochi is made with gelatin and none of their baked goods have been dairy free when I ask, I loved their mochi before and I don't believe they always used to make them with gelatin (you can tell because there's marshmallow like filling). Anyway, I hope their snack menu gets a more inclusive update soon since I don't plan on returning after our gift cards run out. I love the small tea samplings you can buy! I crave the sticky rice tea all the time and the tea cakes make amazing gifts.

Yelp
This was my first visit to this place, despite not living all that far from it. As a tea aficionado, I felt silly having not known about it. I had my backpack with me when I entered and was told that they don't allow laptops. I'd read that on the door on my way in. I don't bring my computer with me, so I didn't feel anything about this rule. I did appreciate that they had it, though, because it means that the space would be quiet and full of good energy. I ordered an iced Osmanthus black and went to my table to wait for my friend to arrive. This tea is exactly what tea is supposed to be: Delicious and infusing my cells with a goodness that cannot be found with any other beverage. Tea is a Food of the Gods, as far as I'm concerned. After my friend came in, I got a Silly Rabbit. This, too, was gift to my palate. My friend got a min-tea service of a Pu'er. She loved it, too. The tea and energy of this place is so welcoming and refreshing. I felt energized by the tea, my friend, and the atmosphere of the shop. I will be back. If you appreciate a quiet place to savor divine teas, this is your place.

Yelp
I had a wonderful experience at Northeast Tea House. I was there for a meeting and loved the ambiance. The ambiance and aesthetics of the space were calming and beautiful. I love that they have a community table and lots of smaller tables to sit at. Each table has its own kettle so you can experience the authentic Gongfu tea service. I had a delicious white tea and tried their house milled matcha. While I'm not really a matcha person, it was surprisingly good. If you like matcha, you HAVE to try their matcha. I also tried some of their baked goods including their mochi and homemade cookies. I would highly recommend. They also have a beautiful selection of tea gift sets and host events for the community. I will definitely be back soon! PARKING: there is ample street parking nearby, but the construction is heavy in this area right now.

Annalise M.

Yelp
Loved the vibe of the place. Perfect place to relax and chat with someone special. The tea was great and they have their own matcha grinder.

Cheyenne S.

Yelp
I enjoy visiting tea shops all over the country from Seattle to New York and the smallest niches in New Jersey. The decor of this place was really comforting and they had a traditional table for enjoying a pot of tea amongst groups. I tried the LaoShan tea and it was delicious. Chocolatey and nutty notes are my weakness. However, I was really put off by the lack of hygienic practices of this place. I ordered a bag of the laoshan tea to enjoy at home and the cashier didn't wash her hands after handling cash/cards/etc. and STUCK HER BARE HAND into the tea canister to scoop out tea into the bag. I don't even do that at home! I always use a tea scoop! I know the germs will get burned off from the hot water I'll be using but what if I decided to cold brew? Those hand germs would definitely still be present in my cup of tea!! Please retrain your staff in handling customer products for consumption.

Yelp
If you like tea, want to learn more about tea, or take tea very seriously- this is your place. It is one of three places in the US that grinds their own Macha, so of course we had to try that. This is serious Macha- earthy and complex. They have multiple varieties you can try. When ordering, pair it with one of the mochi. I really want to go back and explore more of their offerings. Lots of offerings and super friendly service that will walk you through everyone. It is a very calming space. They ask that you leave your screens behind. And you will appreciate. Take in the ambience and relax. What a relaxing wonderful spot .
google avatar

Yelp
Knowledge of each of teas, their quality and service, and absurdly good value. This place is firing on all cylinders and instantly became a regular spot for my wife and I when we want to relax and share a pot.
google avatar

Yelp
My cousin was in town, so we decided to meet for a cup of tea. Of course this was the first place I thought of--it's a unique little slice of chill for those who appreciate tea and tea culture. The service is great--it's very personalized, and the knowledgeable staff will never steer you wrong. I also wanted my cousin to experience gongfu. (It's the perfect way to appreciate a complex tea or to have a lingering conversation, so exactly right for a small reunion.) We loved seeing how the aged white tea that we'd selected evolved over each brewing: color, aroma, and flavor notes all changed. We also loved the beautiful decor, which included the display of items for purchase. With plenty of organic materials, the whole shop has a very serene and warm feel. Stop by sometime, and don't forget to pick up some tea to brew at home--they even have purple tea!

Yelp
A wonderful location and a perfect spot of calm within the busy city! Sit down here and enjoy a perfect cup of tea with someone or by yourself. Their mochi is fantastic and the staff is super friendly. The perfect place for a break in your day!

Simmy S.

Yelp
The tea was amazing, it was very nice to have tea with my parents and have a conversation. The prices were a bit high for tea, but I think the overall experience of it and quality of tea is definitely worth it if you enjoy tea. The Ambiance was okay, I did go during a weekend so it was busy. Highly recommend going during a weekday if you want a little more less chaos, peace, and quiet. I will say the customer service was okay too, I'm definitely NOT a tea expert and it was my first time here, so I wasn't sure what to order or how to. When I told the employee about this, they didn't really help me understand how their tea system/menu works and what tea is best for certain situations or taste and health benefits. So we were kinda just forced to guess on one and hope it was good, which luckily it was.
google avatar

Madina Z.

Yelp
Not many sweets for tea but tea is good. Nice place to meet someone and chat. Slow service.

Yelp
So zen here. I feel so relaxed after visiting this place. The staff is pretty knowledgeable about their tea. I tried two different matcha teas and had the matcha cheesecake. The Mill City Blend had hints of nori and was a little bit umami. The sami was my favorite as it was more of a classic matcha taste.

Yelp
If you're looking for a cozy spot to sip on some delicious tea and zen. Northeast Tea House is the perfect place for you! I visited this charming tea house many times and was blown away by the amazing atmosphere and fantastic selection of teas. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a warm welcome from the friendly staff. The decor is beautiful and creates a relaxing ambiance that is perfect for a peaceful afternoon. The menu is extensive and features a wide variety of teas. I opted for a few varieties, which was perfectly brewed and had just the right amount of sweetness. I also tried one of their scones and it was divine - buttery and flaky, just like a scone should be! Overall, Northeast Tea House is a wonderful spot that I will definitely be returning to. The service is impeccable, the tea selection is impressive, and the atmosphere is so cozy and inviting. If you're a tea lover like me, this place is an absolute must-visit. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This is the perfect place to relax, engage in the calming ritual of tea preparation, put away the phones and laptops, and take out a treasured book instead. The teashop is brightly lit, filled with plants and comfortable floor cushions, and has gentle music playing in the background, ensuring a wonderful respite from a busy life. I had the white silver needles tea in the gongfu style, added the gentle scent of ume kado wafting from the bowl of white ash next to me, and all conditions were set to decompress and immerse myself in a good novel. I highly recommend stopping in every once in a while for not only a great cup of tea (or ten!) but also to relax and decompress.

Yelp
I went to Northeast Tea House for first time this weekend, and it is just an incredible and relaxing experience. The whole shop has a calming and mindful aesthetic that just elevates the whole tea enjoying experience to the next level. They have a Japanese style chabudai table which adds a nice touch as well. The staff was professional and incredibly knowledgeable about their teas and the whole art of tea making. I particularly enjoyed their house ground matcha, of which they have many varieties. The matcha was creamy, yet earthy, and is like none other that you'd find here in the cities. It was so good, I ended up buying a tin to take and make at home! Overall, I highly recommend this place as a great place to unwind, and enjoy great tea, either by yourself or with friends. I'll be back soon to try their many other varieties of tea.

Yelp
An Excellent little gem if you are looking for Asian style tea... the house made matcha is an exceptionally smooth cup. I doubt there is even a single other place in the City offering gung fu service. Very pleasant atmosphere. If you think that Asian style service and flavors might appeal to you, this is a must stop. The server was extremely helpful and very knowledgeable. High quality products coupled with High quality service makes for a very enjoyable experience.

Yelp
An absolute treasure. I had some time to kill before my flight and decided to stop into this tea shop. The service was friendly and very knowledgeable on all the teas. I ordered an iced matcha, a favorable hot white tea, and their homemade (and absolutely delicious) matcha cheesecake. All three were great picks! Perfect ambiance to read, sit back, and relax. Relaxing place and the fish tank is gorgeous to look at it. If I'm ever in the Minneapolis area, this will be one of my must stops. It should be yours as well!!

Yelp
One word for this place: REFRESHING! Take off your jacket, turn your phones on silent, and let yourself be overcome by the ease that this tea shop will surely make you feel. I was looking for a tea shop to pop into for a little midday break and found Northeast Tea House on Yelp. Wow, am I so thankful that I did! As you enter the shop, there's a sign that gently informs all that enter to keep their phones on silent to preserve the peaceful atmosphere of the shop (I loved this small detail and how tuned in they were to the small details). After a quick review of the menu and help from the employee up front (who was also very down to earth, and had a calming presence), I decided to try their traditional matcha which is milled. Fun fact: this tea shop is one out of only 3 in the U.S. that had the machine to mill matcha...which also played a part in me decided to order it. On the side, I decided to order carrot cake (a cheat treat from my normal vegan diet). The milled matcha was very rich, and earthy; which was balanced out when paired with the sweet carrot cake. The entire dining experience was quiet/ peaceful and rejuvenating. A couple things to note about visiting: 1. This spot has a *ton* of tea pot offerings on their menu, so I think it'd be a great spot to go with another person or a small group 2. The drink selection is very traditional; they don't have sweeteners but the experience and tasting the teas authentically (as well as maybe adding a dessert) sweeten the experience Coming to this place was a treat in and of itself, and I'm so grateful that I could visit while I was in Minneapolis!

Yelp
Omg I ABSOLUTELY loved this place! I was visiting my parents and came across this on Yelp and just HAD to try it. They really do make the green tea right in front of you, which I had never seen before so it was super cool. Andres, it definitely tastes different, just so creamy. Then I saw the matcha cheesecake so naturally I had to try that ahahaha it was awesome. The entire place is just so zen. And obviously so Instagram-worthy haha I can't wait to come back to Minneapolis to bring my husband. He loves green tea so I'm sure he'll love it.

Yelp
We are all craving new experiences during this pandemic. We are craving the feeling of being transported to another place. Considering all this the Northeast Tea House offers both as well as a wonderful selection of authentic tea and freshly milled Matcha. The owner has curated a beautiful selection of teas and his knowledge of the origins and the process is impressive. But what you will notice is the passion. The Tea House evokes a sense of calm, with good social distancing and a feeling of a meditative retreat. It's just what we need among the chaos of the world. We look forward to the day when we can grab a good book and sit back and relax while enjoying our tea. The neighborhood will not be disappointed.

Yelp
This place just exudes zen vibes . The tea menu is very thorough and there is even an area to sit traditionally on the ground with pillows. Great tasting tea and relaxing music. Will be back with my other tea-loving friends!

Yelp
I think I say every business in Northeast is a gem, but there are so many that I truly treasure. Northeast Tea House is definitely one of them. From their site: Northeast Tea House is "one of only two operating matcha mills in the country and mill daily. This makes our matcha incredibly smooth and creamy, free of the astringency of lower quality or older matcha." Ok, that's incredible. I have tried their matcha and I agree, there is a smoothness and freshness to it that I've only experienced in Japan. They sell accessories and many other types of tea too, and Simon himself is so informative if you want to learn more. They even have raw pu'er tea! Additionally, they serve really cute and delicious snacks like mochi, matcha cheesecake, pecan pie bites and much more. They also offer experiences like tea ceremonies, and classes like silk painting. Drop by sometime; it's so cute and tranquil inside too!

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place out! It seemed many people had the same idea. Every table was full on a Sunday afternoon. The decor is calming and beautiful. I got a matcha to go. Had to wait a bit because the staff was behind, but they were extremely kind and transparent about the wait times. I'll definitely be back to dine in.

Yelp
When I want to go to a tea house and read/process/ or just meditate, Northeast Tea House is exactly the place I have in mind. They even have their own tea subscription service AND a tea mill to match matcha. WHAT?! I wish tea was more popular in my area as I think it'd be a great fit. Nevertheless, Northeast Tea has plenty of options for you to try as well as a peaceful atmosphere to enjoy it.

Yelp
I went with my friend and it's such a cute, serene spot. Phones/devices are not to be used in the shop, and that just adds to the ambiance of peace and tranquillity. There are so many places to sit (tables or seated on cushions on the ground) and the warmers at the tables are ingenious! The employee at the register took his time explaining each of the varieties of teas, how they are offered, and the process of properly brewing the tea depending on what type of tea you get (black tea is brewed differently than white, which is different than green, etc.). I will definitely be back!

Yelp
very lovely ambience. got the soba matcha iced drink, and much to my surprise, it was bitter. but in a good way. i am so used to the sweet matcha drink i normally get at starbucks, caribou or other cafes. but this one, i feel speaks to the authenticity of what matcha tastes like without all of the added sweetener. one of those places that feels like i'm not in mn. would recommend!

Yelp
I'm from San Francisco area and when ever I travel, I always try to find a tea house and this one was such a special find because #1. the tea selection is phenomenal, high quality Japanese, Taiwanese, puerh, and other teas. The space is gorgeous and they have a great pastry chef who makes wonderful treats to go along with your tea. I wish this teahouse was located near me. I'd bring all my friends and guests there.

Yelp
I have truly enjoyed finding this amazing tea house. A true gem in the NE of Minneapolis. A passion for well sourced tea and they stone mill grind their matcha in house. Wonderful snacks, brunch menu, and a huge variety of teas. I highly recommend the matcha experience which included with purchase an insulated cup, matcha bowl, bamboo whisk, and fresh ground matcha. This experience came with a personal guided tour along with education on the making of the perfect cup of matcha. The store is family owned and the people are wonderful. You will not find a unique experience like this anywhere in MN. I highly recommend trying it out and returning time and time again.

Yelp
My favorite place in Minneapolis period. Relaxing atmosphere and the smoothest cup of matcha you've ever had. Def recommend for all tea lovers.

Yelp
So glad I got introduced to the Northeast Tea House. This place is absolutely amazing and an exceptional experience that I would encourage anyone to try! I was introduced to the Matcha machine, which I learned (dont quote me directly) there are only 3 in the United States, and this place has one! I was so intrigued so I had to try it. I was forewarned that it is NOT like the typical Matcha that you get at a Starbucks or Caribou. It was not sweet at all, but rather earthy and not as thin (if that makes sense). It was definitely different, but in a good way. Dont expect to get a sugary tea here. if you go in with those expectations, you will have an amazing tasting experience. they have so many options to choose from and VERY knowledgeable staff who are eager and willing to share their expertise and passion with you. The space is also very cute. My husband and I sat at the small table on little bean bags, which was super fun and added to the ambiance and overall experience. I would definitely recommend this Tea House for an intimate quiet date for 2, for a quiet relaxing time for 1, or a small chill group. P.S. I checked in while there and got a bowl of free Wasabi Peas!! Win win!!

Yelp
What a gem for Mpls! A must visit for tea drinkers. Tried both a hot and an iced matcha on a sunny spring morning to conclude our visit to the city. Emily was so patient answering my many questions. Made our trip unforgettable.
