The Best Dishes Eater LA Editors Ate This Week | Eater LA

"I like to start at Northern Cafe by selecting cold appetizers from the glass display — from garlic-flecked kelp to delicately spiced tripe — and the most memorable was thinly sliced pig’s tongue, tender and slicked with numbing chile oil, a perfect prelude to a steaming bowl of beef noodle soup." - Eater Staff

Located on the east side of Garfield south of the 10 freeway. Large parking lot, but it does fill up. First time coming here and I enjoyed so many things from my childhood that I haven’t had in a long time. Sit down and order directly from the QR menu on the table. The noodles are hand pulled. I ordered thin for the beef noodle soup. The broth was so good, but the thin noodles were a little soft for my liking. If beef roll is on the menu, I’ll definitely order and I did. The sesame noodle was exactly what I needed during summer weather. We were very satisfied and the restaurant was clean too. Only bottled and canned drinks available. They brought us water, but no ice. I will definitely be coming back. Didn’t need to use the bathroom so I didn’t see if they had one.

Been here a few times now. Always great food. Almost always fairly busy when I come in which is a good sign that's it's good food. Ive tried almost everything on the menu now and everything has been good. Atmosphere is good and staff is always friendly and helpfull. Always fun watching the noodle guy also.

Was in the area, and was looking for a restaurant and walked by this place so decided to try it. Right when we walked in, the server sat us down and brought water. Then after ordering the food plate after plate came over very fast. Have to say the service is excellent and everything was very speedy and efficient. Food was the classic N. China style beef noodles, with XiaoLongBao, dumplings beef roll, beef pies leak chives pie, and so on. The place was very spacious. They pull their own noodles through the glass window into the kitchen area. Would definitely come back again and recommend to friends to check it out

Nice restaurant with nice food. Portion is big and the taste is great too. Love all of the food, especially the small dishes. Got quite a variety of them, and you can easily do a mix and match. Beef roll is a must to order. Will definitely come back again for other food.

Food selection is good and the portion sizes are great. I driving in this area and was hungry so I stopped in to get a bite and I'm glad I did. Seating was easy and quick. I was able to order a few dishes from the menu but I think I ordered too much but the food is excellent. The taste of each dish was perfect, the balance of all blended ingredients was spot on. I have no complaints at all. I got cold flat noodle - 4/5 Juicy pork dumplings - 3/5 - xiaolin bao Chicken knife cut noodles - 4/5 Beef noodle soup - 5/5 Sweet spare ribs - 5/5

Google
I love the food here!! From the moment I got seated, the waitress brought me out water. I really appreciated that. I also asked if I could move to the back cause there was a cold draft in front and she helped me carry the menu, waters, etc. I ordered the chive pancake, all beef noodle soup, and pork & leek fried dumplings. All were delicious!!! The chive pancake was my favorite! They have TVs in here to keep you entertained if your family doesn’t talk. They stay open until midnight! Prices are pretty average/reasonable. I love how fresh & delicious everything tastes!!!

Google
Clean and modern with 4 large televisions. You are able to watch them hand make their noodles at the front of the restaurant or even while walking by. Service was a bit slow only having two servers who also have to work and mandate as cashier (hopefully they will hire more personnel?). A yelp review will get you a free coke (which I hope to redeem at my next visit). I really enjoyed the beef rolls. The other dishes weren't bad, but I've had better. Great place to stop by for a late night meal (just don't expect it to quickly arrive at the table).

Google
Nice place for dumplings and knife-cut noodles soup. Noodle portion is generous, price is reasonable and the noddles are made fresh. I think the noodle soup bowl could use a little more salt and meat. You can see workers from the window at the entrance making fresh noodles. Plenty of parking available; especially the parking lot on northeast corner of Garfield and Garvey. Service is fast. Lots of cold dish appetizers available.

Yelp
This location and Hacienda Heights are by far the best Northern Cafes to exist!!! My favorite is the hot and sour beef noodle golden soup. The flavor is always on point and I love their cold dishes: pig ear, woodear mushroom and cucumber! I live on the west side but I will drive all the way here because the NCs in my area have a different menu and their cooking is just bland. Every time I come here it's almost always packed which is always a good sign! The restaurant does get loud and busy when they're full but they still manage to give amazing service. This one lady server already knows me since I come here almost every day lol their noodles are handmade so it's always fresh. Btw not sure if this is a secret but they actually have their own thing parking in the back.

Yelp
I'm losing my touch by not taking any pictures this time as well. I think it was the cockroach I saw literally sticking on the window of Noodle Art. We were going to go to Noodle Art to try more dishes for my partner's birthday. The Chinese sign on the window said closed for break. The other English sign on the door said vermin regulation. I literally saw a cockroach stuck between another sign and window right by the door! We quickly pivoted to Northern and it was a welcome respite. The place is well decorated - modern with nice wood details. We quickly picked out cold dishes my kids loved eating - Chinese sausage, tofu peel salad, and sliced pig ears salad. We also got lamb skewers with a cumin spice mix to dip into, beef noodle soup, lobster claw and sliced meat bone broth soup, bbq pork bites, chicken wings, etc. Everything was delicious with plenty of seating for our table of 7. The restaurant appears constantly busy with customers. Good choice but the parking situation is horrible. Go at your own risk.

Yelp
Great place in Monterey Park for hand pulled noodles. The House Beef Noodle soup was really good and I very much recommend the beef rolls here as well. Theres plenty of parking in the lot/plaza next to it. My only complaints are that the chili oil at the table had literally 0 spice or flavor, and that they seem to be really understaffed! We came on a saturday night; it was mildly busy but we were able to be seated within 10 minutes. The noodles came out really quickly but the drinks and appetizers came far later at random times. It hard to get our waitress over, and we had to repeat some of our requests multiple times. This can be frustrating but it's not always entirely the waitresses fault! Overall, I would come back (but maybe bring my own chili oil).

Yelp
Recently came here for lunch and really liked the fact they make their noodles fresh and in house! Definitely get their House Special Beef Noodle Soup with medium flat noodles. The noodles are thick, chewy and super long! I ate 2 pieces of noodles and was so full. We also ordered a 3 item medium plate which we picked garlic cucumber, seaweed, and shredded potato. Everything was very flavorful but I didn't know the shredded potato has a bit of mala flavor so it was a bit numbing. We also got the grilled chicken cartilage which was my favorite. It was so flavorful and surprisingly has a good amount of meat considering it was a cartilage. The service wasn't too good though. It was hard to get the servers attention and when we asked for extra bowls, we were ignored and had to get up and grab it ourself. Overall a pretty decent restaurant and I would definitely come back for their chicken cartilage and noodles.

Yelp
Introduction: - my father recommended this place to me to try out. - this restaurant is right in front of the hong kong super market. Pros: - Everything was delicious. Ordered the bolognese noodles along with the cold appetizers. None of the dishes were overly salty. The flat noodles were amazing. It had nice glistening texture and a nice chewiness to it. - Service was overall awesome and if you don't speak Chinese. They have everything in English for you. They give you a menu form and you pretty much check box what you want. It's easy and convenient. Cons: - They have very limited parking space. Worse case scenario, you can always park at the plaza next door and walk over. Overall: - One of the best noodle shops I have been to! Noodles were freshly hand pulled! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Northern cafe has been on my to go list for awhile now because I really enjoy the variety of noodle soups they offer! The food is delicious and a 10/10! The noodles are hand pulled, you get to pick between round noodle, large round noodle, and flat noodle. The noodles are deliciously chewy. I liked the flat noodle, it's a bouncy texture! The service was okay since there was a little bit of a language barrier. You get a menu where you mark off the things you want to order and our server missed one of our noodle dishes. We wanted to communicate that we ordered one of the dry beef noodles but she got it confused for the popular beef noodle soup. We just accepted it since the noodles already came out, nevertheless it was still delicious. The ambiance was a bit uncomfortable since we felt rushed to get out. We asked what time they close since we didn't want to stay and be a bother. Our waiter told us they close at 10:30pm and I was surprised. We came around 10pm since the hours on Yelp say they close at midnight and it was updated 3 weeks ago. We asked for to go bowls and rushed to get out, didn't really get to enjoy our food further on.

Yelp
We ordered 2 appetizers for to-go. We waited for an hour standing in front of the restaurant. The restaurant was not even crowded. The staff told us it is almost ready, when we have waited for 30minutes. And we had to wait for another 30minutes. We asked when will it be ready. They said they will check and nothing happened. I am not sure if this is a normal experience. Speaking of food, Calamari was too plain, shrimp was ok.
google avatar

Yelp
Broth is clear and flavorful. The handmade noodles are chewy and have great texture. The meat is tender and soaked with flavor. Overall, amazing soup noodles!
google avatar

Catherine L.

Yelp
Bestie brought me here. I was skeptical since there are so many noodles places in Mpk, why would this be different? I was so wrong. Excellent hand pulled noodles with a variety of broths and meats, Delicious juicy dumplings, a deli section that sells a variety of cold dishes like marinated pig ear, beef, chicken gizzards, tripe, cucumber salad, cold shredded potato, wood ear mushrooms, seaweed. Highly recommend, now one of my favorite noodle spots
google avatar

Yelp
Food was amazing and freshly made per order, service was quick, and it's a very casual place to get freshly pulled noodles! For the price of a combo meal at any fast food place you can get a feast!

Yelp
Not all Northern Cafes are created equal.. I've been to a few and they seemed to be owned by different people with different menus. That said, I like this location. Not only are the open to 11pm which is perfect for those nights you take forever to decide what you want to eat and the usual places start to close. It's never too crowded and you can park in the big lot next to ABC. I haven't been disappointed with anything here yet and the portion sizes are good. I typically will go for one of the knife-cut noodle options.
google avatar

Yelp
Good food. Do recommend to others. Full of flavor. If you are in a mood for some wholesome bowl of soup.. hearty and satisfying to the soul.... Look no further.

Yelp
Don't sleep on Northern Cafe's Spicy Beef Noodle Soup. I definitely like it here better than 101 noodle, din tai fung, and mandarin noodle house. Can't believe I just tried this recently! Wasn't sure where to park so we parked at the ABC cafe parking lot and walked over. The restaurant was nice and clean. Service was what you'd expect. After we ordered they didn't really check on us but we didn't really need it.

Yelp
**Elizabeth's Star Rating System** 1 star = Terrible, would not recommend, will tell family and friends to avoid 2 stars = I won't be back but you might enjoy it 3 stars = I'll be back eventually 4 stars = I'll definitely be back 5 stars = I'm telling my friends and family about this place! **PARKING:** Despite being a no-frills joint, the parking situation is generally manageable, ensuring I can easily find a spot near the restaurant. **ARRIVAL:** Stepping into Northern Cafe each week is a treat. It's the kind of place that doesn't focus on gimmicks but centers on serving quality noodles and dumplings, all freshly prepared by their skilled chefs. **FOOD/DRINKS:** The Hot & Sour Golden Premium Beef Large Noodle Soup is my standout favorite here. The noodles are consistently perfect, boasting a delectable texture that's a testament to their hand-crafted quality. Sometimes, you're fortunate enough to catch glimpses of the chefs diligently making these fresh noodles in the open kitchen. **SERVICE:** While it's not a place for fancy presentation, the service is consistently efficient and respectful. The real draw here is their expertise in making noodles and dumplings, served with simplicity but made with absolute dedication. **AMBIENCE:** The ambiance is unpretentious yet welcoming. No flashy embellishments, just the enticing scent of freshly made noodles and dumplings. There's an air of authenticity and dedication in the simplicity of their approach. **OVERALL:** Northern Cafe is a haven for those craving genuine, freshly prepared noodles and dumplings without the trappings of an extravagant setting. The Hot & Sour Golden Premium Beef Large Noodle Soup and the addictive shrimp, pork, and chives dumplings are consistent winners. The real charm is in the meticulously handcrafted noodles, prepared by the skilled chefs whose craft is sometimes visible in the kitchen, adding an extra layer of appreciation for the freshness and quality that define each dish.

Yelp
We got fried shrimp knife cut noodle, but the portion was huge; neither of us could finish it. The noodles are chewy, which is why I come here often. We also tried the pan fried leek pancakes and beef and onion pancakes, just alright. DanDan noodles is a must-try here , and they offer various appetizers for mixing and matching. You can choose yourself. It gets busy during meal times, no reservations, just first come, first served, but the waiters are quick."
google avatar

Edgar L.

Yelp
Northern Cafe offers a delightful culinary experience, evident in their impeccably prepared Dan Dan noodles. From the moment the dish arrives, the aroma tantalizes the senses, promising an authentic taste journey. The noodles, freshly hand-pulled, boast the ideal chewiness, a testament to the chef's dedication to quality. Each bite bursts with authentic flavor, transporting diners to the streets of China. Northern Cafe's commitment to excellence shines through in every aspect of their cuisine, making it a must-visit destination for lovers of Chinese cuisine seeking an unforgettable dining experience.

Yelp
/)/) ( . .) ( づ we had the beef rib noodle and half beef half tenderloin soup. Loved the beef tenderloin soup, very light flavor which I loved. The noodles were perfect! Chewy and fresh. The beef rib noodle soup tasted like Taiwanese beef noodle soup. Also light in flavor which we loved actually. I actually prefer the thin noodles the most. Also had soup dumplings, which were a bit too sweet for me and the skin was a little too thick. But still solid soup dumplings. The chives pancake wasn't for me. Just not my taste but still good if you like things like that. The bamboo and beef tribes sides were solid. Just drown in chilli oil. So nothing outstanding here. Food came out not too slow. All in all solid noodle soup place. Loved it!

Ed W.

Yelp
Good tasting and well proportioned and executed fried dumplings. Only thing I got but we go back.
google avatar

Luke G.

Yelp
If disappointment were a dish, Northern Cafe would serve it up expertly. I ordered the braised combo noodle bowl, eagerly anticipating a spicy treat, but was met with a flavor as mild as a midsummer's breeze. The beef rib, a key player in the combo, was not only devoid of spice but also served cold, adding insult to injury. The overall service matched the underwhelming meal. Our dishes were carelessly flung onto the edge of the table as if participating in some sort of culinary discus throw. To add to the chaos, our eagerly awaited scallion pancakes were replaced by a mysterious stuffed item that no one ordered. also parking and area are miserable here the inside isn't even clean
google avatar

Mandy W.

Yelp
I seriously cannot get enough of their Pickled Pepper Fat Intestine Noodle Soup. If you're the same, consider adding an extra order of noodles and intestines to prolong the deliciousness of it all. Quick and easy to order by phone and pick up. Plenty of parking available in the long next door. Super tidy indoors and looks like it could be great dining experience.
google avatar

Yelp
Noodles are good. But service is horrible. Not worth it. The girl on floor gives an attitude like you own her money.
google avatar

Ray C.

Yelp
Ordered their secret beef bone noodles soup and it was good. The soup was nicely flavored and I really liked the flat noodles - fresh and chewy. The younger lady is attentive and helpful and fast. But on the contrary, the older lady is rude and annoying! She's like MAD at the entire world. I saw her ignoring this lady's request for bowls.
google avatar

Shelley D.

Yelp
They have really good handpulled noodle which I loved. I've enjoyed the shrimp stir-fry noodle is chewy and has a nice smoky flavor. Their potstickers are not bad as well. You have to try their beef wrap. It is really good better than PP pop right from across. they are also reasonably priced.
google avatar

Judy G.

Yelp
I tried it a few years ago and came here for some beef noodle soup since it was opened late. Love the type of noodles they serve but the broth was lacking and the wonton with chili oil was also meh. Presentation and color looks amazing.
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
We love the cold dish bar here There's always leftovers and a great mix to accompany your soup noodle We tried the gold soup with lamb Super gold color and delicious Has a hint of fruit which I can't explain it isn't super sour but has just enough spice level We always come here great for big groups and closes late enough
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
I recently came here for lunch with my friend. The noodles are clearly home made and delicious! My friend ordered the house special beef noodle soup, and I ordered the house special lamb sliced noodle. Both of us ordered knife cut noodles. The food was delicious! The broth of the beef noodle was well seasoned, and the beef slices melted in your mouth. My lamb noodles were also flavorful! Service was also relatively quick and efficient. Portions are very generous. It was a great casual place for lunch. I would definitely come back!

Yelp
I've previously eaten at Northern Cafe in person last year and we last stopped by with my husband on 12/23/202 at noon time for lunch. We ordered the following: ++ A1 - House Special Beef Noodle Soup (Meat & Tendon) with Large Round Noodle - $13.99 - My order. It was a little plain but clean and still delicious. Beef noodle is my typical go to but I prefer braised beef noodle with a richer soup. This is Northern Chinese style so the broth is clear and lighter. I ended up adding chili oil and a little of black vinegar lol. I enjoyed their handmade large round noodles that had a nice, chewy, qq texture. I wish the noodles were thicker round but I'll go ahead and try the medium flat ones next time. ++ A4 - House Special Spicy Beef Noodle Soup w/ Large Round Noodle - $13.99 - This was my husband's. This broth was of course richer, oilier and spicier. I actually preferred my husband's noodles over mine haha. It wasn't too spicy and the flavor was just right. ++ E12 Beef & Onion Pancake (2) - $9.99 - Yum yum yum. Comes with 2. The pancake is more like a flattened bao that's pan fried to yummy goodness. The outside is so crispy and the meat/onion inside is so flavorful and juicy! Just be careful of the soup that comes out so be mindful when biting in. ++ L6 - Peach Passion Fruit Green Tea - $4.50 - Part of their new drink List! Surprisingly tasty and refreshing. Quite sweet so we added water (but that's okay, means more drink right lol) Parking is either street parking or in the lot right by ABC Cafe. I don't particularly enjoy using the parking lot since there's usually an influx of cars coming in and out, and the spots are kind of small..but honestly, kind of typical in an Asian plaza. Customer Service: It took a few minutes to get seated since they were busy, but the ladies who helped us were so nice. They checked on us a few times before we ordered (prob cus I was being indecisive) but they were so courteous. They also help you box your food, which we appreciated and is a nice gesture. All in all, I thorougly enjoyed my food and experience and will be back!!
google avatar

James V.

Yelp
I ordered the house special spicy beef noodle soup with medium flat noodles and can really tell the quality of the noodles and that you know it's hand made. I really did wish the broth was a bit more savory, it just felt super light. The majority of the dishes here were not spicy despite the name. I even tried their chili oil and it wasn't spicy either. The beef roll was okay, I've had better. The spicy wontons were good but I feel like the spice could be higher. The Dan dan noodles with a fried egg was good, I also just wish it was more spicier. If I had a plan to go here, I would 100% bring my own chili oil haha.
google avatar

Miguel N.

Yelp
Ordered the braised combo noodle bowl and another bowl, both supposed to be spicy, neither was spicy at all and the beef rib in the braised combo was cold. The bowls were just carelessly tossed on the edge of the table for us to grab ourselves, and the scallion pancakes we ordered didn't come, instead we got some sort of stuffed item. The woman barked at me about not accepting Amex.
google avatar

Danielle T.

Yelp
I really like the noodles here. My go-to noodles are the Beef Noodle Soup and Tomato Beef Noodle Soup. The soups are not too salty and both are very flavorful. My favorite type of noodle is the large round as it is very chewy just the way I like it. Because the noodles are very thick, one bowl of noodle soup is quite filling. I think two people can share one bowl. Aside from noodle soups, I also really like the dumplings. My favorite is the XLB :) It does not have a lot of soup in it, but it is still very flavorful. I think they added a little bit of sesame oil inside the XLBs for flavor :) Overall, I really like the food here :)

Yelp
Stopped by on a Sunday for lunch and there was no wait. Parking was easy as there's a plaza next to the restaurant. We ordered the House Special Spicy Beef Noodle Soup (Standard Round Noodle), Pickled Chili Sauerkraut Intestine Noodle (Large Round Noodle), Grilled Chicken Cartilage, Spicy Wontons, and a Peach Passion Green Tea. The broth of the House Special Spicy Beef Noodle Soup was nice and savory. At first glance the bowl looks spicy with all the chili oil, but you really don't get any spice when you eat it. The broth was still clean tasting and didn't make you feel heavy afterwards. We opted for the standard round noodles and the chew was just right. The meat was also extremely tender, which was a plus. The Pickled Chili Sauerkraut Intestine Noodle was also very delicious. I think I enjoyed the broth more because of the added pickled vegetables. It had a nice kick in flavor that I think the beef noodles lacked. The intestines were also tender. We chose the large round noodles for this dish and I preferred the chew of this one more than the standard. Would definitely get this again. For appetizers, we ordered the Spicy Wontons and Grilled Chicken Cartilage. The Spicy Wontons were so good! The sauce wasn't spicy, but it was the perfect balance of sweet and savory. The Grilled Chicken Cartilage was juicy, seasoned in pepper and came in pretty large pieces. I ended up dipping it in the wonton sauce and it did not disappoint. The tea was standard, nothing too crazy to say about it, but it did hit the spot since we wanted something cold and sweet. Overall really enjoyed the food and the restaurant. The portions were huge so we ended up with leftovers. They also make their noodles fresh in the front! They have a pretty extensive menu, so I'll be sure to try out their cold noodles next time.

Yelp
TLDR: Excellent handmade noodles and traditional pastries - easily one of the best that I've had in the SGV / 626. Aside from the exceptional food and affordable cost, service was outstanding throughout the night. - - - - - - I visited Northern Cafe unsure of what to expect. There are many "Northern Cafe" in the SGV / 626 area, but I've never been to this one despite having been to Monterey Park so many times. No surprise, though, as it's quite hidden between buildings. Parking is easy in the large lot nearby. I ordered the House Special Spicy Beef Noodle Soup, and having been the last person in my party to show up didn't think twice about what I was ordering. My favorite part is that there is self-service for refreshing, iced cucumber water. I didn't realize that I was eating handmade noodles until I realized how good they were. My friends knew I enjoyed it by how little I talked during the meal; though I enjoyed it at a pace of what I thought was slow, I finished my food and broth before my friends finished half their food. The spice was pretty strong and left me coughing, but the broth itself was very tasty and fresh. Although it was a little pricy, it was worth every dollar. We also ordered two appetizers, the steamed dumplings and the beef and onion pancakes. The skins of the dumplings had substance and felt like they were prepared with utmost care, and the insides were juicy, meaty, and flavorful. The pancakes were not my favorite as they were oily, but they were fried so well I couldn't help but enjoy them regardless. Compared to all the others that I've had, this easily rises to the top. Having come later near 10:00pm, I have to admit service was commendable and available at all times. The servers were attentive and did not rush any of the guests out even near their closing hours.

Yelp
Items: 1. Beef roll | $11.59 | 5/5 stars 2. Beef & onion pancakes | $8.99 | 4.5/5 stars Review: Placed a phone order for takeout here. Everything was packaged well and utensils were provided. The beef roll here is the best I've tried. It was very sweet and savory. The beef and onion pancakes came with 2 and they were really juicy and flavorful. Overall the food didn't feel too oily but was still delicious and filling! The restaurant itself looked like a good place to dine in. Parking: Parked in the ABC Cafe plaza.

Yelp
My parents love this place and I do too. Their soups all taste great. We usually go for the classic beef noodle soup and tomato noodle soup. We also tried the spicy pickled noodle soup. It wasn't overly spicy (which is great for us as we don't like Mala) and the spice mainly came from the Chilli pepper seeds, the pickled veggies were delectable. I also recommend their korean rib dry noodles as the sauce is super good. 1 portion for all their dishes is able to feed at least 2 people so me and my family always split multiple. Love that this place also closes late! Parking is free, just park where the ABC Cafe is located.

Yelp
COVID-19: Social distancing is not enforced at this establishment. Some of the staff wears a mask. All customers are not expected to wear a mask. It's optional now. Some of the staff also wears gloves. There are some hand sanitizers available for customers to use. This place is available for take outs and has some indoor seating available with no limited capacity. They are not sanitizing in between customers. COVID-19 Vaccination Proof: This establishment currently does not require proof of vaccination. While I was grabbing my food from this establishment several days ago, I asked if they had any special offers and they weren't offering any at the moment. They currently don't have happy hour. They also do not allow pets in their establishment UNLESS it's a service animal. Parking: The parking lot for this establishment is located in the back of the establishment. However, the parking lot is incredibly tiny. I usually avoid parking in their parking lot because it is just really small and you have a 99.9% chance of your car getting dinged. So, just park in the parking lot in the plaza next door. That plaza has plenty of parking for you. Food: I ordered the beef rolls. The beef rolls consist of thinly sliced, aromatic braised beef, wrapped with sweet hoisin sauce, fresh scallion, and cucumber in a crispy, flaky scallion pancake. So fricken delicious. Just hit the spot. Staff: The staff here are very fast, friendly, and efficient. They accept both cash and credit cards. There is a $20 credit card minimum.

Yelp
Third time coming here and I absolutely love it. Super clean and open vibes. Service is fine. The house special knife cut noodles is my favorite. Always super flavorful and fresh. Beef noodle soup is good too. Beef is very tender.

Yelp
Restaurant is located right on Garfield. I parked in an adjacent plaza - not sure if that's their parking lot or if the plaza is ok with that. Place is packed. We came in and were given a table right away but the folks behind us had to wait. Service is ok, I think there's 2-3 waitresses and they were quite overwhelmed. We had the cold dish with the seaweed, beef tendon and something else. I really liked it. We were starving so I didnt take a picture of it. Some of it has a little kick to it which is perfect when the weather is cooler. If you like garlic like I do, you'll appreciate the cold dishes. We ordered a lot of B1 which is the soup noodle with the beef rib. My nephew had the tonkatsu ramen. We had an order of the beef roll and juice pork dumplings. The bowls don't look that big but it fits a lot of noodles. I think each bowl can easily be split between two people. The portions were huge. I probably ate a third of my bowl. The soup has a heavy herb taste which I love. It's also a little sweet. The noodles are a great texture. We all ordered the standard round. The juice pork dumplings and beef roll were ok. Nothing special but it isn't bad. They only have one bathroom. So the wait can be long. Overall 4 stars. Would come back again.

Yelp
Was feeling like trying another noodle spot late at night and this place showed up opened until 11 pm! We sat down and ordered three dishes the beef roll for appetizer, the spicy beef noodle soup and knife cut lamb noodles as the main. The beef roll was a total hit. Nothing that really stood out and wow'ed but they are certainly how a beef roll should taste! The Spicy beef noodle soup wasn't actually too spicy though you could taste that there is some spice in there. The star was definitely the noodles which were soft and fresh ( you can see the chefs through the window making them like most noodle spots) Lastly the dry knife cut noodles with lamb were very filling yet had a great balance of flavors. It's on the heavier side so it's easily sharable. If you need a spot that is open past 10 pm and want to fulfill that noodle craving in Monterey Park this place is a total banger!

Yelp
I love the food here!! From the moment I got seated, the waitress brought me out water. I really appreciated that. I also asked if I could move to the back cause there was a cold draft in front and she helped me carry the menu, waters, etc. I ordered the chive pancake, all beef noodle soup, and pork & leek fried dumplings. All were delicious!!! The chive pancake was my favorite! They have TVs in here to keep you entertained if your family doesn't talk. They stay open until midnight! Prices are pretty average/reasonable. I love how fresh & delicious everything tastes!!!

Yelp
By a family friend's recommendation, we went to Northern Cafe for a late dinner. Lots of parking in the nearby plaza, bright & modern restaurant space, and yummy noodles! We ordered 4 noodle dishes, including the House Special Beef Noodle Soup (regular and spicy bowls), Miso Seafood Noodle Soup, and House Special Stir Lamb Pulled Noodle (asked for less spicy, and luckily, they allowed modifications!). The noodles were truly noteworthy, and I liked that you could see the chefs hand-pulling noodles as you walk into the restaurant (by the big kitchen window). We also ordered a box of the deli items to-go, including the bamboo shoots, seaweed salad, and veggie meat & mushrooms. They were still good the next day to eat with rice. Overall, a good 1st experience at Northern Cafe. Would love to return and try more!

Yelp
The dumplings were great and the soup noodles are a different spin on what we are use to. Beef ribs were great tasting and tender. The vegetable dish and chicken is a new taste for us.... its good. Here, they are very fast service and its clean here with a pleasant atmosphere and decor,.... check them out if you're in the area.

Yelp
Called around 9:45PM after looking for hours and debating what to grab for a late dinner. Found Northern Cafe and called them to ask their closing hour and luckily they close at 10:45! After we arrived, there were many other groups (+ individuals!) who came to enjoy some late night dinner too. They have a parking lot behind their restaurant. We were given a paper and pencil to write down what we wanted and was double checked by the server. There are also picture menus if needed. We ordered: -House Special Hot and Sour Noodle w/ Fried Egg: I accidentally ordered this thinking it was the Beef Noodle Soup one but it was still very flavorful with their pickled veggie and fried egg. 7/10 -Pork Wonton in Spicy Sauce: This was our favorite so far! It is garnished with peanuts and green onions but you don't really taste much of the peanuts. 10/10! -Dan Dan Noodles: I personally don't like the peanut flavored noodles but my bf who does enjoyed it! It comes with minced beef, fried egg and veggies. It came with ton of noodles! -New Orleans Chicken Wings: Another one of our favorites! This has the taste of a BBQ chicken wing fresh off the grill. Would definitely recommend! 10/10 -XLB Dumplings: Usually we love XLBs but this was questionable but paired nicely with the spicy sauce from the wontons. The pork kind of had a peanut buttery taste to it which we both weren't a fan of. Overall, it was delicious and i would recommend and come back to order their spicy wontons and chicken wings!

Yelp
Ambiance: conveniently located in SGV, large parking lot in the plaza behind the establishment Service: friendly and attentive filled water and served food Food: the noodles are generally good but not the rest dishes Three Item Plate - **** choices of veggie cold dishes, seaweed, bean curd, shre potatoes, recommend House Spl Beef Noodle Soup - **** meat only broth, choice of regular thin noodles, recommend House Special Spicy Beef Noodle Soup - *** bold msg taste, not very spicy Sweet and Sour Spare Ribs - ** overly sweet and not sour at all Big Bone in Brown Sauce - *** very dry Price: generous portions, about $30+ per person for a very fulfilling meal

Yelp
The beef rolls at Northern Cafe are the creme de la crème of beef rolls! They're are insanely delicious. We also ordered my friends favorite noodle, intestine noodle soup, with two eggs on top, which was also delicious. I can't wait to come back and try their other noodle dishes!

Yelp
It's not as spicy as it looks, but this wasn't necessarily a bad thing. I really enjoyed the beef noodles - the pickled greens and their sourness adds another layer to a spicy, savory soup. Beef is sliced vs the chunks typical of beef noodle soups. Good prices, solid noodle place, and Northern Cafe has a cute interior.

Yelp
Perfect handmade ramen noodles. The broth was so rich. Portion is perfect. My go-to is the house special beef noodle with tomato sauce and fried egg. Nice interior design. Good service. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I prefer this branch of the northern cafe. Perhaps it's not part of a chain, as it offers a unique experience. I truly enjoy the food and ambiance here.

Yelp
Second time here, one star dropped due to service. Food: Love their Lanzhou style noodles. I tried the House Special Beef Noodle Soup (non-spicy) with Medium flat width noodle. The soup is full of flavor, and the noodles are handmade which is always so good! $13.49 - recommend! Juicy pork dumpling. 8 pcs for $10.49. It's just so-so, I will not order again, there are so many other better ones out there. Service: -1 I really missed the male waiter, I saw all ladies this time. He was super nice and Friendly. This time, the lady is quite rude. They highlighted some items on the menu, how do I know if it means "highly recommend" or "out of stock". After I chose one that is highlighted, the lady just said in cold "we don't have it" and left.... When the store was not that busy... Price: decent. Good for a quick meal. Overall, I still like their food and may come back again, but hope I won't see the same waitress though. 兰州拉面依旧很地道,宽面实在太香了!小笼包就非常一般了,感觉不会再点了。 上次来,是个小伙子服务生,人特别好。这次店里都是女士,我的服务员态度不要太冷酷,形成鲜明对比。
