I had been wanting to try this place for a very long time. I've lived in the area for over 10 years, and I'm a sucker for good fish and chips, especially authentic British style.
On a Friday well after Lent (I learned my lesson going to a fish place on a Friday in lent ), I decided to finally pull the trigger and stop by. It was a one man shop. Nice guy. No high tech anything here, takes your order on a good old fashioned spiral notebook.
The pictures are mouth watering, fish looks hearty and exactly what I was feeling that day.
Fries: plain and super basic, like everyone has said there isn't any seasoning on them...which my wife liked. I could've done with a light sprinkle of salt... but that's totally fine, we can add salt at home! The best part of the fries were that they were fries crisp, well done, exactly how I like my fries.
Fish: I think it was cod but could be haddock. They looked frozen then battered, but I could be wrong. The point is, the fish is cooked to order and tasted fresh whether or not it was frozen. The fish was also not seasoned, but again forgivable. Fish was dense, and not very flaky. The batter was actually perfect, not too thick, but also not too thin. Wish the fish was a little more flaky, too dense for my taste.
Sides: Fried zucchini--this was my fave part. Dipped in the same batter as the fish, the zucchini was very fresh and had its own crunch. Very nice.. also having a light batter made this fantastic.
Slaw: excellent pairing to all this fried food. Not too sweet light and fresh. Slaw needs to be simple and they did this right. Would definitely go for this again.
Hush puppies were definitely meh. Dry, not fluffy and only the slightest essence of the hush puppies you are familiar with.
Fried shrimp: basic...on par with any other restaurant.
I'd come back...and stick with the winners: simple fish and chips (2 pieces), slaw.
Oh... THE TARTAR SAUCE IS AMAZING!
