"On March 14 a new bar is opening in the former Louie’s Bar at 883 Payne Avenue. NorthStar Bar will have Mik German slinging the good bar snacks. He’s the same chef that created the plan-your-evening-around-them burgers and munchies at Alary’s in downtown St. Paul. Louie’s had a pretty rough reputation, and the new spot has gotten a good scrub down and makeover to bring back some of the historic glory." - Joy Summers

I went to see a concert there a couple years ago year and I had the best time. Been back several times since and still having fun. Lots of comfortable places to sit. Enough room in front of the band. Clean bathroom. Lovely tiled 20ft ceilings with great acoustics. Excellent (new) management and staff. The food is good. They have a watchful bouncer who keeps a good eye out. This place attracts kind patrons from all walks of life. I've spent a lot of time in other St. Paul neighborhood establishments and NorthStar Bar & Grill is just as good if not better for reasons related to its rich history. Even without an elevated stage, the live music is excellent every time. I like their acoustics but had to wear ear plugs the other night when a band brought a ton of amps (see pic). It has an intimate welcoming vibe. Parking has never been an issue on Payne Ave. At closing time, the neighborhood seems quiet and sleepy.

I went Thursday night for reggae night and had the jerk chicken plate. It was very delicious. Had a drink from the bar and the bartender was super cool. They also had a life dj spinning dancehall and reggae music. Great chill laid back environment. I’ll go back.

The bartender was VERY nice. But the owner was really rude! Was here for an event that I paid for. And she almost shut it down because no one was there at 8:20 when the event only started at 8 .. every time I asked her a question she came back with a snarky remark in a snappy fashion. HER VIBE AND THE ATMOSPHERE SHE BROUGHT WAS NOT A GOOD ONE! DEFINITELY NEEDS AN ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT.

I LOVE fried mushrooms, but im rarely impressed by them. Northstar blew me away with these huge, well battered shrooms!! I’m in love!!!

We had lunch at NorthStar today and the food was very good. The burgers are huge! They have entertainment too. The Karaoke on Wednesday is a blast, heavy metal on Thursdays, and bands Friday and Saturday. You'll find they also have Bingo and Meat Raffles. It's a really eclectic and fun place.

So this was my first time in this location. I heard the food was great but unfortunatly the kitchen closed at 8.. which made me not get to try it. Maybe next time. They had a rock show.. it was fun. The bartenders were great and attentive and the place was a fun place to gather I will go again. If I had a suggestion for this spot. I would highly recomend to have more tasteful lighting. Bright stark white completley removing any shadows and bar feel would be the one suggestion. Grown folks in a bar do not want to sit in OFFICE LIGHTING... ESPECIALLY for a rock show... ITS A BAR light it like one.

Went for a show and figured I'd eat there. Glad I did. The patty melt is a hefty lass. When you go somewhere and get a burger that has lots of words but doesn't quite hit the spot, ita because you didn't get this burger. Cheese is gooey, bread is toasty and buttery, and the burger is a solid and juicy chunk of cow. I hope there are more concerts there so I can eat that burger more without feeling bad for lying to my cardiologist.

This is easily one of the best burgers I have ever had! It’s a double patty and it’s certainly costs less than many other place in town! Plus the deep fire bacon appetizer is to die for! 100/10 if that were possible! They also accept American Express
