"Preparing to reopen tomorrow in Lowertown’s Northwestern Building, just/us is moving into the former Golden’s Deli space after its first iteration on Wabasha and 7th was pushed out by landlord conflicts. I learned that building managers had been looking to fill the vacancy to capture foot traffic from the nearby St. Paul Farmer’s Market and Art Crawl, and through a series of coincidences the just/us team saw the spot as an ideal home. Owner Nate Docken called December 10 through January 10 a “soft opening phase” to take things slowly and monitor service flow, with a much larger grand opening planned for early 2020; the move was delayed past an intended August opening mainly by plumbing work. Created by five close friends as a response to the pretentiousness of fine dining, the restaurant embraces a punk aesthetic and no-b.s. service. It began as a prix fixe spot in the evenings with burgers in the daytime, but the new location shifts the menu toward a distinctly New American approach with strong international influences. The team has long aimed to be a community hub for local musicians and artists, and the larger space now allows for open mic nights and live music. Significant interior work includes plush and leather seats, a mix of contemporary and old-fashioned baubles, and a full mural by local artist Ta-coumba Tyrone Aiken. The restaurant will be open Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m., with espresso, cocktails, beer, and wine available all day." - Matt Gundrum
