Best Hot Chocolates in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"This ethically minded Portland cafe chain is more known for its coffee, but the hot chocolate is similarly sustainable and truly good. Nossa Familia works with Sacred Summit, a local chocolate maker that sources organic beans from fair-trade growers, to make a chocolate sauce for its base. As an added bonus, the hot chocolate comes with homemade chocolate espresso whipped cream. The Best Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes Near Ladd’s Addition in Portland | Eater Portland

"For nearly twenty years, Nossa Familia’s farm-direct, locally roasted beans have been among Portland’s most beloved — with several roasts named after specific members of the Brazilian-American family that owns and operates the company. One of three Portland cafes, the Ladd’s Addition outpost is airy and inviting, with vibrant plants and floor-to-ceiling glass windows. The sustainably sourced and carefully roasted beans speak for themselves in drinks as simple as a drip coffee or Americano, but repeat visitors owe it to themselves to try Brazilian specialty drinks like the sweet, simple cafezinho or the spicy moca fogo." - Nathan Williams

The Environmental Impact of Compostable Take-Out Containers | Eater

"A Portland coffee company that launched a zero-waste shop in 2018 and instituted a 25-cent charge for disposable to-go cups paired with a 25-cent discount for customers who bring their own; the policy reportedly cut disposable cup use from 66% to 31% and generated a 17% BYO rate, leading the business to apply the surcharge across all three of its Portland cafés." - Gosia Wozniacka

Google
Good vibes, kind baristas, and friendly ppl. I’m visiting from out of town but if I lived around the area, this place would def be a great hangout place. Tried this pastry made with sweet potato and chickpea and it was DELICIOUS. Also tried the mocha fogo and it was unique/tasty. Great place

Google
My Latte was delicious. Very good quality coffee and well prepared. The cafe seating was a bit limited but they have outdoor seating which is nice, it was just a bit chilly. They have sugar free vanilla and they use Monin (the food stuff.) Overall I was very happy with the experience.

Google
I recently visited a different Nossa Familia Coffee location, and it exceeded my expectations. The cozy atmosphere and friendly baristas create the perfect environment for either a quick coffee stop or a relaxing afternoon. Their espresso drinks are always perfectly balanced—rich and smooth without any bitterness. One of my favorite things about this place is their focus on sustainability and community involvement, which makes every visit feel purposeful. While I typically enjoy their offerings in-store, I’ve also started using their subscription service, which is fantastic for enjoying their freshly roasted beans at home. It’s a great way to keep a steady supply of high-quality coffee, delivered right to your door. Whether you’re a regular or a first-timer, Nossa Familia offers a consistently great experience!

Google
Such a nice place for coffee and a bite. Their tapioca flour cheese waffles are *amazing* and the bee sting latte was delicious (although a little more spicy than sweet). Just be aware that there are up-charges for all to-go items, including food. We dined/drank in but were accidentally up-charged for to-go. 🙁

Google
Lovely coffee shop located in a triangular building with a warm, neighborhoody vibe; and modern, refreshing decors. Bright sun lights shed in through the huge glass windows. Price is very reasonable and service is genuinely friendly. There are a few small tables outside and I enjoyed my hot latte with brisk fresh air.

Google
The coffee here is so delicious! Lots of different options for drinks & treats. Vegan chocolate whipped cream, vegan salted caramel sauce, bee sting latte, ube & lemon curd scone...need I say more?

Google
Great coffee, great food, and great service. Couldn't ask for a better experience

Google
Great coffee. Great customer service. Great music played.

Yelp
So...the number one thing I loved about this place is the coffee itself. The roast, the freshness, the smooth taste. It is easily in my top 10 as far as the coffee itself goes. Honestly, it's in the top 3. And I've had a lot of coffee in my life. That alone had me making a second trip just for the coffee. As far as the rest, it's a simple coffee shop. The staff is nice and they make cheese waffles that are tasty. The local baked goods are tasty. There's some basic seating. For me, it's all about the coffee. So good I can drink their espresso straight up.
google avatar

Yelp
Go here often when I'm out for a walk or need to concentrate to get some work done. Always good coffee and snack options. My only complaint is I wish they would be a little more strict regarding the unhoused people that tend to walk in over and over again for free things. It's very distracting and one time an ambulance had to be called.
google avatar

Cierra L.

Yelp
Their mocha fogo is SO tasty. I had two because one just wasn't enough. I diiiiid leave my last sip sitting on a standing desk table to hold my seat so that I could run to the restroom, and they bussed my drink. I was v sad lol. Hence why I grabbed a second smaller one to go. lol I'll be back for more and I plan to try some food next time because it smelled great. There are tons of street parking options, plug-ins, and some indoor and outdoor seating/standing options.
google avatar

Sasha G.

Yelp
Great, chill ambiance. Ample space to work if that's what you're looking for. My iced americano was solid and the price point was refreshing to see. The coffee is definitely roasted on the darker side. Service was friendly. Would def return whenever in the area!
google avatar

Allison C.

Yelp
Great little spot for coffee. The baristas were friendly and shout to the one that made a teddy bear out of foam in my latte! So adorable
google avatar

Rosie D.

Yelp
Good spot. Their bee sting latte is very good. And they offer a free chocolate espresso whip that is amazing. (Like, too good). Which is available in a vegan version. However, it's not a great location- parking is hit or miss. I've come out and can't find parking and just leave. Sometimes walking trek isn't an option. So just something to consider but otherwise great spot. Def on my list of favorites. Consistent in quality.

Yelp
I decided to get up early and take my 18 month baby along with me to try out this place. Boy, am I glad I did! The coffee was fresh, flavorful and memorable! I had the Carmelo Fogo and the touch of cayenne and caramel was on point! It warmed my chest and satisfied my sweet tooth without being overindulgent. The drink made me feel alert and healthy! Not sure how they accomplished that, but it gave me sharpness without the jolt! I've never had a coffee taste like it! I'd drink this every day if I could. The service was great. The staff were so kind. My baby wanted water and they offered us a silicone straw since she struggles drinking out of cups. The ambience is calm and serene. I highly recommend this place to anyone going to OMSI!
google avatar

Kiara Mae S.

Yelp
This place is truly a neighborhood gem. The workers were sooo nice and friendly to newcomers and regulars. The whole place is really aesthetic and has plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors with large open windows. The prices of the drinks are at great value and the quality is amazing. I got the espresso con panna and the quality of the coffee beans surpassed my expectations! The matcha latte was also really good!
google avatar

Bryce O.

Yelp
I'm sort of a matcha snob. My latte was well made. And good quality. Friendly staff and cool space.

Yelp
This is Nossa's "seven corners" cafe, adjacent to Ladd's Addition. It's in a building that serves as a nonprofit hub with a focus on disability services and accessibility. They also aim to be zero waste and carbon neutral. So it's a really cool location! Not sure what to order, I got a Nossa signature drink (espresso con panna) and didn't find it to be all that enjoyable. It was quite bitter, which is typical for espressos, but I thought the whip cream might help balance it out more than it did. I will try something else next time. The other thing I was not a fan of with Nossa was the automatic sign-up for their email list after I purchased coffee here. I guess Square payments has all my data and allows businesses to do this. I'd prefer a biz sends me an invite to opt in to their mailing list rather than adding me and requiring me to unsubscribe if not interested. The staff is friendly and prices are normal to cheap for a coffee shop like this. Mostly bar/counter style seating with a small lounge area. Wifi available.
google avatar

Oksana P.

Yelp
Not memorable coffee taste. No "latte art" on my coffee order. Atmosphere and staff are fine
google avatar

Ethan G.

Yelp
Life changing experience for me! Get the caffe con panna! The food was really good! The baristas were super nice too!
google avatar

Julia S.

Yelp
I absolutely adore this location! Been coming here for a couple years now and always appreciate how I'm greeted by the friendly baristas. Everything here is great- the mochas with chocolate whipped cream is delicious, the sweet bee tea is refreshing, even the puppichinos are delicious (so says my dog). Nossa always has delicious coffee, but this location is a truly special place.
google avatar

Rosalyn G.

Yelp
Oh Hey Nossa! First off I want to compliment a great location for a coffee shop, right across from new seasons! Right when you walk in you are greeted by the friendly staff! They have recommended me some things that sounded amazing but I had to go with the Vegan Salted Carmel latte. Did I mention that the Carmel is VEGAN! Like come on , it doesn't get better than that! They also have vegan chocolate sauce and homemade syrups. Now right underneath the counter is some yummy looking pastry's. Scones, to cookies, to gigantic cinnamon roll. They also have avocado toast??? Yum. I didn't get a chance to get some food but next time I will. :) Grab some food and enjoy this well air conditioned coffee shop.
google avatar

Benjamin C.

Yelp
hangover cure corner store. great prices and a lot of nice window seating, mocha fogo is a must

Catherine S.

Yelp
I'm giving this place a five based on the deliciousness of the coffee, not necessarily on service! The coffee is so smooth! So delicious!! The service? Well half the time it's fantastic and others I can't tell if I'm pissing them off by just being a customer. But it's worth the gamble for the coffee!!
google avatar

Linda H.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this coffee shop with time to kill after our Barre3 class. The inside is illuminated with natural lighting and cute decor, especially the little nook in the back. From what I remember, there are more bar seats available vs tables. It wasn't busy when we arrived around 3pm so we were able to get a table. The barista was so nice! When asked if they did coffee art, she said yes "but not that well." She definitely underestimated herself because the coffee art was done perfectly and the mocha with vanilla flavoring was sooo good! Definitely one of my top 3 in the Portland metro area. She even bought the mocha to the table. I can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
Came here on a lazy Sunday for a cup of coffee. The location is great, right along Division at the edge of Ladd's Addition. I got a vanilla oat milk latte that had a great flavor, though it wasn't quite hot enough. The price was very reasonable - quite a bit cheaper than Starbucks actually. I was disappointed they had very few baked goods. The interior was nice, albeit a tad small for the amount of people there (limited seating). Staff were very friendly. I'd come back here again.

Lance G.

Yelp
They need to quit advertising that they're open for dine-in, if they're not going to be doing dine-in. Wasted time travelling to this place, just go have to turn around.
google avatar

Thomas M.

Yelp
This place rocks, especially now that they have a pão de queijo waffle! Great coffee, B Corp certified (and just read their sustainability report while I was waiting), local Portland coffee shop. Chai latte was about the best I have tasted, btw. Highly recommended stop on the division side of Ladd's.
google avatar

Charlie T.

Yelp
A nice place to have a coffee meeting and also enjoy the view. The place has lots of natural lighting and the aesthetics inside are nice and simple. The people working here were very friendly and quick. The matcha tea was pretty good. Overall, a good place to stop by for a drink.
google avatar

Maria S.

Yelp
I love Nossa Familia's cafes. I used to love this cafe because the service was good and the happy staff made it a nice place to hang out. It seems all those former happy employees are gone now. I ordered a standard matcha latte, and the barista was loathe to speak to me or smile when I thanked her for the finished drink. Maybe she's having a bad day, I figured. No biggie. The matcha latte I ordered had an excess of matcha in it, so it was dark swamp green, sludgy, and super bitter. I tried to tough it out through the first 1/3 of the drink but couldn't. It was so strong it made me feel jittery like coffee. So I asked tentatively asked a new person at the counter (there had just been a shift change) if I could have some extra oat milk added to it because it was incredibly strong. The response I got was wordless, frown-faced, and with no reply to a polite "thank you". Just a silent dumping of the milk in my cup as if it was some grave and unforgivable inconvenience. It felt like I'd just had hatred poured into my drink. After being treated like garbage by two employees in a row over a shift change, I won't be coming back to this location.
google avatar

Matt E.

Yelp
Woot! More quality coffee on SE Division! I'm a fan of Nossa Familia, and this is a pretty nice shop. It's spacious, has a ton of natural light, and plenty of space to work or hang out. I like the design, and the vibes are on point. They're all about sustainability, and as a result have some funny pricing policies. It'll cost you a quarter to get a to-go cup, but if you bring a reusable mug, they'll knock a quarter off. Parking could be a bit of a challenge, but I was able to find a space without too much circling. Definitely my new go-to coffee stop when on lower Division.
google avatar

Lily D.

Yelp
No indoor seating despite having the full capability to offer this service. Disappointing and I'll take my business elsewhere.
google avatar

Frank B.

Yelp
Coffee snob here. Best coffee I've had in Portland bar none. Get your pastries at St. Honoré, scones and cookies at Grand Central, but your coffee at NOSSA.

Riley B.

Yelp
Wonderful coffee wonderful staff wonderful ambiance!! The compassion of this place is very important to me
google avatar

J J.

Yelp
My new favorite place to hang out in the neighborhood. I like that I'm not wasting a cup (bring your own cup if you're taking your coffee to go or they charge a quarter), in house they have nice mugs for ya. The coffee is great according to my coffee drinking husband, and I can vouch for the gingery chai and all the teas, of which I've had all-- as I cram to get all me CEUs in last minute, as usual. The place is cozy and the staff is nice. I was just talking about how there was no really great coffee and tea place in the area... and then here comes Nossa! Hey thanks guys! And hey, you can save the environment a little with your caffeine. Nice eh?
google avatar

Jody T.

Yelp
10July19 @ 1pm Long room with not a lot of seating. All the seats are window seats. Quick friendly service. We had a couple of small lattes at the great price of $3.25. The coffee was quite good with a nice taste and texture and no bitterness.

Soraya L.

Yelp
The vegan scone was delicious, I'm not vegan and I wouldn't have been able to guess it was vegan if I didn't already know! My partner loved the spicy herb cheese waffle with jam. The turmeric latte was the best turmeric latte I've ever had, and the staff was very nice

J. T.

Yelp
Very fine array of coffees and nice service. The staff seems to enjoy their work and give a good vibe. Some of the pastries are super great, too.
google avatar

James W.

Yelp
Absolutely loved Nossa and I try many coffee shops where ever I go. The unique combinations to simple cortados , perfectly poured espresso with amazing chocolate espresso whipped cream - friendly baristas. Try the mocha fogo or unique and spicy bee sting latte...so different. Well done Nossa!
google avatar

Stephanie B.

Yelp
I had never been here and was greeted by two friendly baristas who made me feel right at home! I ordered the Bee Sting latte with almond milk, to try something new. It was spicier than I'd like, but I finished my drink after admiring the beautiful design in the foam. I sat at a sit-stand desk and reviewed my 2018 goals and planned my 2019. This is a ritual I do at the end of each year at a different coffee shop. It was a beautiful sunny day and the place was pretty full. There were children playing near me, but I was able to focus on my goals by listening to music with my headphones. Speaking of music, they were playing some good music and I even Shazammed a few tracks. I would come back and try another latte. Definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

Stephen M.

Yelp
The mocha fogo (spicy mocha) is a dream here and they even have vegan chocolate whip cream! I should get around to trying other drinks, but this is my favorite and I can't help but treat myself
google avatar

James K.

Yelp
When I heard Nossa was going in down the block, I thought 'great, another expensive, precious coffee place' NOT! It is so great to have a better and closer option in the neighborhood. -The people are all friendly - The mochas are great, subtle and not overly sweet - If you bring in your cup, the price is cheaper than pretty much anywhere for good coffee -It doesn't take 10 minutes for a drink to be made And they are really interested in coffee! The staff know what they're talking about, they aren't just pulling shots. They are definitely our go to coffee stop from now on.
google avatar

Anna B.

Yelp
Great service. I felt very welcomed from the moment I stepped in. Great location on SE division. Coffee is delicious and they reward customers (-$0.25) for bringing in a coffee mug to drink from. They have delicious specialty drinks and their self made mucha whip is 10/10. I got it a chai with the whip on the side and I would highly recommend it if you normally like chai teas. They know their drinks and are ready to provide recommendations if you want some help deciding what to get.
google avatar

Yelp
We've been here several times but I won't be rushing back. There are two comfy chairs in this establishment and my husband & I planned to sit there for our Sunday morning coffees. We only go to coffee shops with comfy chairs, otherwise we prefer have coffee at home. Well, there was an open water bottle next to one chair but nothing else, no coat, nothing. I asked the server was anyone sitting there. He pointed at some lady who was behind the counter working and said she was. For the rest of our time there, as we sat on hard stools, she walked around the place never once sitting in the chairs. When we left no one was still in the chairs. Why are we giving tips to these people who tell us we can't sit on available chairs? As customers paying $10 for two coffees I don't feel appreciated or welcome when this is how we're treated. In Portland there are lots of coffee shops to choose from. We drove across town for this one. But I won't be doing that again.
google avatar

Cara S.

Yelp
The Best! Had Chai (delicious), regular coffee (very strong), Bee Sting Latte (the ultimate and best thing ever). I was getting the latte with soy milk but oat milk was recommended and I LOVED it. Loved this place, loved the customer service. On my last day visiting Portland, I wanted to go back but decided to go to a well known spot famous for chai which I love . I waited in a very long line and was so disappointed (SO disappointed) and dumped my chai out. I debated running back for a chai done right but the chance of missing flight was high. Still, i thought about it. This place is the BEST. No line (although there should be)...if they expand to SF Bay Area i will be first one at the door. If they give me the recipes, maybe I'll expand them myself.
google avatar

Ben R.

Yelp
I refuse to go here because they will smugly hand you an iced coffee in a plastic cup, with a plastic lid, and then proudly inform you that they have no straws, neither paper nor plastic. They will gladly sell you a reusable straw, or suggest you just sip from the top like a some kind of savage. I got to carry my iced coffee on the bus all the way to work, and then ask another business that isn't moronic if I could have one of their straws. I can't tell if the aim here is to trick customers into buying reusable straws or just to feign conservationism, because they're still causing plenty of waste with plastic cups and lids, but they also refuse to offer compostable paper straws. Maybe they just like to be annoying. Either way the coffee and food isn't good enough to make up for it.
google avatar

Shannon H.

Yelp
Love the ambiance, the service is at a stellar, the coffee is great and I love their B Corp sustainability practices! I also adore their Che easy bread! Highly recommend. They are also in supporting local!
google avatar

Pér H.

Yelp
I have always enjoyed this roaster and I use their full cycle at home as my house espresso. Now I love them even more because of the ecological stance they are taking. I always bring my own cup for to go coffee or I drink the coffee at the place if I don't have one with me. Here I was congratulated like a hero for bringing my own cup then noticed they have a whole cup library of to go cups that are reusable. They also give a discount for bringing your own cup and you can buy their whole beans at a discount if you bring your own container. Space is very nice and clean and inviting as well and the woman who took my order was utterly delightful and informative. I will be back in
google avatar

Stefanie S.

Yelp
Nope. Because they have decided to be a B-Corp they are pawning off the costs by upcharging for a to-go cup. I'm sorry. The $5 iced latte break-down goes like this - cup .03, 8 oz. of milk .20, espresso 1.00, 12 cubes of ice .08, three minutes of customer service/labor .50. At best, that coffee is $1.81 but I live in Portland and will pay the $5. But now you want me to bring a cup otherwise I get CHARGED!? Nope. If you really want to motivate and inspire your customers to think differently about their impact on the planet, start by giving $1 off their drink. Then I bet you'll see some happy customers who are motivated to bring in their own cup. Bye.
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
Nice coffee spot. Nothing particularly special about it but the staff was nice and so was the tea. Seating area could be done up a little but it did the job.
google avatar

Sean C.

Yelp
I walked 3-1/2 miles this morning to go to this place. I passed 720 other coffee shops along the way and I began to wonder if that first sip was going to be worth it. Totally was. Thank you. Attention attention!!! starting another coffee shop in Portland is not an original idea but if your gonna do it you will have to figure out how to do it better than Nossa. Good luck with that.
google avatar

Sophia S.

Yelp
What a pão de queijo waffle!!! They are always nice to my service dog (Thank you! ). Although they serve great coffee (we buy their coffee beans and drink at home), my daughter and I always order Matcha or Hoji-cha latte.
google avatar

Katherine P.

Yelp
The baristas here are always super nice, the café always looks clean and the coffee is really good. I work down the street and used to complain that there was nowhere good to get coffee in walking distance, but they changed that. They're also really make an effort to help the environment and are really appreciative when you bring in your own cup. I've also had food from here and it's always been good.
google avatar

Lynette R.

Yelp
Today was my second visit to Nossa Familia coffee and it was just as great as the first visit. The shop is clean and the staff is super friendly. I got a mocha and it was extremely tasty. Although I got regular milk in mine they do offer alternative milks like oat and soy etc... Can't ask for anything more.
google avatar

Jake H.

Yelp
What an awesome place. The mocha is divine with chocolate decaf espresso whip cream! The almond croissant was also heavenly. Awesome staff, and I really appreciate their emphasis on reusable cups. They even have free real mugs that you can take with you.
google avatar

Leah C.

Yelp
I love how warm the baristas always are. Also the lattes are the best in town. the prices are really great compared to other places. I love their seasonal drinks. so creative!

Good C.

Yelp
Had coffee here today while waiting for the restaurant my wife and I were going to eat at to open. The place was clean the coffee was good and the atmosphere was friendly. The employee offered to fill my cup of coffee up when I just asked for a little to warm it up. This was a very kind gesture. They even had heavy cream which I use instead of half-and-half or milk for my coffee. Not all places have this. I'll definitely be coming back if I'm in the area.
