Commuting through Harwood Heights & was feeling nostalgic for an Italian sub took me to Nottoli's. It's been many, many years since my last sandwich.
A dated Italian deli with catering and limited grocery. Jarred foods, specialty foods, prepared frozen foods, chilled pastas & salads, many of the dry and ready-to-prepare ingredients needed to throw a meal together quickly. They also carry some specialty items such as beverages, condiments and varieties of pastas not found in large chain grocery stores. Next to the counter you can find some of the typical staples; pizza focaccia, cannolis, etc. (**Spice up a store bought focaccia and really enjoy it. They offered two sizes. Cut in rounds, like sandwich bread and then top a half with your favorite deli meats and cheeses. Then bake. I like to crisp-bake both ends in a cast iron before stacking. Or do your own stuffed pizza focaccia. Best of all, you can find all the ingredients ready to go here. Personally, I like to make my own red sauce.) In the rear is the deli where fresh cuts of meat, cheeses and submarine sandwiches are created. Hot and cold subs. Nothin' fancy, just a means to quell a hungry stomach. Sandwiches are made with the basic ingredients. Lettuce, tomato and a shmear of mayo and some cheese if requested. Soybean oil based giardinera is available upon request w/ upcharge. Wish they added any of the condiments available in store which could kick up sandwich flavors.
