The Best Italian Subs In Chicago, Ranked

"Nottoli Italian Foods has a bunch of premade dishes like lasagna trays, stuffed peppers, and minestrone, but this Norwood Park deli and market also makes a great italian sub. It’s not necessarily the neatest sandwich, with a decent amount of meat, cheese, and vegetables sticking outside of the bread zone. But that just means that each bite is always loaded with filling. They also don’t shy away from a hefty mayo spread, so if you’re a big fan of spreadable egg yolks, you’re in luck. " - adrian kane, nick allen, john ringor, veda kilaru

Nottoli Italian Foods Review - Norwood Park - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Nottoli Italian Foods has a bunch of premade dishes like lasagna trays, stuffed peppers, and minestrone. But this Norwood Park deli and market, open since 1967, also makes great sandwiches. The loaded cold cut subs like the Italian are solid, and they also have chicken parm or an Italian beef and sausage combo. Seating is limited, but there are a few high tables in front of the meat display case." - John Ringor

This is a nice Italian deli that my girlfriend kept telling me about. I picked up some green relish, and cut hot sport peppers for when I make Chicago hot dogs. And I picked up some hot giardeniera peppers for Italian Beef sandwiches. This place was nice and had a good atmosphere.

Nottoli Italian Foods on Harlem!! One of my Favorite places on the Planet! Have been coming here for years. Everything I have ever ordered here has been Delicious! They slice their Imported Prosciutto perfectly, so perfectly thin that you can almost see through it. Picked up two loaves of D'Amato's Bakery Bread, does anyone make better bread? I don't think so. Picked up some cheeses and two cannoli. The Cannoli Shell was so Crunchy and The Filling was Traditional and Fantastic. Loved It! Get Here and Get Some!

Google
Cute storefront with full service deli in the back. Grabbed lunch, and I must say it was a delicious meatball sub!

Google
A Third generation run business that pays homage to its roots while they offer updated ready to go meals that are delicious and affordable. Their sausage is made in house and always fresh. The line for sandwiches is long and worth the wait. The staff is great and they even have a parking lot.

Google
I think this is the best Italian sausage sandwich I’ve ever had and I’ve had plenty. Went with hot and sweet peppers. The bread was perfect. Highly recommend. I have my next order ready to go.

Google
Amazing place, get a sandwich, get a to go meal, get pasta salad, spices, they really do have it all! Don't pass it up if you are close by! I got baked Shells to go, cookies and Tortellini! To die for! I will be back!

I've been wanting to check out this place for so long but always forget about it. They usually close at 4pm. Luckily, last Saturday I drove past craving a good sub for lunch, so I pulled in. I got a normal cold beef and provolone sub. I also noticed they had homemade dinners to take home and microwave in their fridge so a grabbed a container of ravioli. The sub was beyond delicious! Excellent tasting meat and a very flavorful provolone. Best sub I've had in a long time. For dinner, I decided to hear up the ravioli. I couldn't wait to eat it so I had an early dinner. Absolutely to die for. As far as the store, they have various Italian grocery items, packaged, fresh, and frozen. I went back again yesterday and got their hot beef, a homemade piece of Tiramisu, and another dinner. This time I chose the Chicken Marsala which was amazing. The tiramisu didn't stand a chance once I dug into it. You must check this place out!

Yelp
Never disappoints, breaded steak sandwich on Fridays for 10 bucks love it! Can't go wrong with the meatball sandwich as well. Love the garlic Italian sausage it's a must. Can't go wrong with their customer service always friendly and helpful. The best part within walking distance from my house.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch. This store is a small Italian Specialty with a deli counter and homemade items frozen for sale in the coolers. I had a spicy Italian which had a crusty Italian bread and was simply outstanding! I also took a half pound of the olive salad which was peppery and I enjoyed it. There was celery and olives in an olive oil with plenty of seasoning. I would definitely stop here when in the area

Yelp
Food is decent. The woman cashier is pretty rude and tone death but that's about it. Would rather go to the other location off Belmont

Yelp
When you walk into the amazing atmosphere of Nottoli, you immediately take a big sniff at the overwhelming delicious smells of Italy. This shop has held a special place in my heart ever since I was young. The staff is always friendly and amiable. Their authentic deli, drinks hit the spot! I recommend their imported prosciutto sliced very thin, paper-like thin, it hits the spot!! Anyways, the only recommendation I have for this joint is to get rid of the frozen pizzas in the freezer, you don't need it! If you sell pizzas, make dough and just make your own pizza, freeze it, sell it! It would be a HUGE success. People would go in there for deli meat, and leave with a pizza, tell their friends, the friends would come in for pizza, and come out with some deli meat!! Tada

Yelp
Had the Italian sub was good . Not bad on the price $10 for 12" sub. Nice family local place that's been here for many years.

Yelp
This place makes delicious food consistently. I recently ordered a tray of chicken Parmesan and brought it to a party. Everyone thought it was homemade including me.

Yelp
Excellent sub sandwiches, and on Friday breaded steak sandwich, one of the only places I know of in the area that has the breaded steak sandwich besides driving all the way down to Ricobene's.

Yelp
If you ever want to know what an Italian sub ought to taste like, they'll let you know! Has the perfect blend of flavors. Every time, they're consistent. The bread, the meats, the cheese they use, it's all perfect.

Yelp
I can walk here, which is a plus! So yummy. They have a deli and lots of other goodies in there shop. Also love that they have to go meals that you can just warm up at home. Good to have when you are in a pinch!

Yelp
My family and I have been twice now and it is always very clean. Staff is very friendly and the sandwiches are delicious! The meatball sub and the paninis have been our favorite.

Yelp
Great place for sandwiches, paninis, etc. great owner, staff, and atmosphere. I got the Dante's panini and a tuna sub. Both were delicious. Can't wait to come back for more.

Yelp
My go to spot for Italian deli sandwiches. Their hot sandwiches are great. Breaded steak sandwiches on Fridays but need to get there before lunch as they run out with lunch rush. Staff is a friendly family and always energetic and polite.

Yelp
There are TWO Notolli's, the Original lives up to its name and reputation, the other on Harlem is...well it is. We have patronized the Harlem store for years and it was ok, the store is on the way to my wife's hairdresser on Addison. We purchased sub sandwiches, frozen entrees as well as dried pasta and other foods. About a month ago we bought a pound in a half of mild Italian sausage, our regular buy. It was dreadful, we couldn't eat it and we brought a pound back to inquire why was it so bad! The clerk refunded our money and gave us another pound in half to take home; she shouldn't have bothered, this too was almost as bad. I went online and emailed Nottoli our concerns. George CALLED me and said there are TWO Nottoli's and we dont buy from them, I had the wrong store. Days ago, I posted 2 comments on the Harlem store website store TWICE and haven't heard back from them, other than a generated reply, We'll get back to you. BS I feel sorry for the Original Nottoli's this confusion must be a hassle for them!

Yelp
Yelp has pointed me in the right direction yet again. Was in the mood for a breaded Italian steak sandwich & the Magic App directed me here. The Friday Sandwich Special was already sold out, but I wasn't too disappointed. The eggplant Parmesan sandwich was PERFECT! These guys figured out how to take away that strong, bitter aftertaste that lingers with fried eggplant. Dare I say that this may become a destination spot for me. I'll try again next Friday & grab that breaded Italian steak sandwich.

Yelp
Delicious subs , friendly atmosphere, great variety of Italian foods. Wish I would have tried this place sooner!

Yelp
I love these guys! They have a little of everything and all of it is good. The star of the show there are the Italian Subs, although you can't miss with the Meatballs or Roast Beef sandwiches. They have a great assortment of fresh and frozen prepped foods, and the staff is wonderful. A parking lot is also a bonus when you're shopping for a group. Bravo!

Yelp
I had a catering order for my daughters party, everything was delicious. We had beef, sausage bites and mostaccioli, my guests were very satisfied with the spread! I called to order, they confirmed 24 hrs prior to pickup and pickup was really easy. The inside is small but really felt like old school Chicago! Employees were friendly and the clientele looked to be mostly local which was nice since we just moved to the area.

Yelp
Absolutely the best panini on the planet! Fresh cold cuts! Created to perfection! Alot of love goes into these bites of heaven ! Their Italian bread Laorio is simply delicious in the oven a little butter broil! Heaven on earth!

Yelp
Commuting through Harwood Heights & was feeling nostalgic for an Italian sub took me to Nottoli's. It's been many, many years since my last sandwich. A dated Italian deli with catering and limited grocery. Jarred foods, specialty foods, prepared frozen foods, chilled pastas & salads, many of the dry and ready-to-prepare ingredients needed to throw a meal together quickly. They also carry some specialty items such as beverages, condiments and varieties of pastas not found in large chain grocery stores. Next to the counter you can find some of the typical staples; pizza focaccia, cannolis, etc. (**Spice up a store bought focaccia and really enjoy it. They offered two sizes. Cut in rounds, like sandwich bread and then top a half with your favorite deli meats and cheeses. Then bake. I like to crisp-bake both ends in a cast iron before stacking. Or do your own stuffed pizza focaccia. Best of all, you can find all the ingredients ready to go here. Personally, I like to make my own red sauce.) In the rear is the deli where fresh cuts of meat, cheeses and submarine sandwiches are created. Hot and cold subs. Nothin' fancy, just a means to quell a hungry stomach. Sandwiches are made with the basic ingredients. Lettuce, tomato and a shmear of mayo and some cheese if requested. Soybean oil based giardinera is available upon request w/ upcharge. Wish they added any of the condiments available in store which could kick up sandwich flavors.

Yelp
Holy wow! The take away veal parm is amazing! The sauce is rich and plentiful and goes well if you make some angel hair and asparagus to make it a whole dinner at home! We realize now there's an Italian gem of a grocery store near us and they have all the goods we need to never need to dine out or pay for fancy meal boxes! Tempted to Buy large amounts of the meat ravioli on our next visit and look for some of their own sauce to make an easy meal! And the quality meatball sub and simple turkey n provolone are worth every bite! I noticed a nice seating area to eat the food there and a impressive grinder to get your espresso too!

Yelp
2 stars because the subs are good, but the employees are not sanitary. They keep one pair of gloves on the whole time and go on to check their phone, scratch their head, i even saw a lady smoking in the alley with her gloves on. Place is dirty.

Yelp
I don't really believe in 5 stars. Only God is perfect, anyway. But I give Nottoli 5 stars because they do so many things right and because the damn place is so friggin' old school, it takes me back to so many things I grew up with. Things like no BS, politeness, respect, chill vibe, authenticity. Yeh, that last one is what makes me feel good about this life. It's just a little place with a deli in the back. That's the main attraction for me. That deli in the back is where they make my Italian with hot giardiniera. This sandwich is so mafia, I cut my lip on it (that would be due to the crunchy outside of the Italian roll). The Italian sub is just such a necessity in life. Poeta's up on Lake Forest makes a great one, which I will travel to pick up and shove on my pie hole. The Italian sub is what real men eat for lunch. The rest of this shop is Italian grocery items. Tons of dried pasta in multiple shapes I didn't know existed. There are all the basics you need to be a happy person in your Italian food life. They also make soups and entrees refrigerated or frozen to take home and enjoy. Bellissimo! That par cooked pizza I grabbed better be good, or I might have to take back a star. Pizza is my thing, you see...

Yelp
Great subs and potato salad. Good service and very people. A little pricier than other subs.

Yelp
This place REALLY is fantastic! Chicago has some of the best Italian delis in the country in my book...and nothing against any others...but this place is where it's at! First visit...called in an order of 3 italian beefs, a meatball sandwich, breaded steak sandwich, 3 spinach arancini balls, lb of potato salad, lb of pasta salad. Everything was absolutely delicious! Made quick, busting with flavor, cooked perfect, generous portions, high quality and affordable! I picked up a pack of pizzicati cookies, some jars of peppers and a bag of lavazza coffee. Hands down the best prices from area delis and the jars of peppers were unique and SO GOOD! Everyone who ate the sandwiches loved them and said they would be back soon. Super clean store with the nicest people working it...places like this really put Chicago on the top of the food scene!

Martin R.

Yelp
just recently bought 2loafs of italian bread at a cost of over nine dollars.are you kidding me. on top of that you could have usedthem as baseball bats, that is how hard they were. everyones prices have gone up but there prices have gone thru the roof. their sandwhiches have gotten smaller their staff acts as they are doing you a favor and heaven forbid if your bill is three cents over they will give you back ninety seven cents.

Eric I.

Yelp
Walked in for an order and was told they couldn't complete it because I had to call ahead.(the order was 2 3ft sandwiches)No1 else was waiting. Instead of ordering 3 different 12 inch sandwiches I'll take my business down the street to Rex. They had no problem fulfilling my order
google avatar

Sal C.

Yelp
They have pretty decent sandwiches. And the Italian sausage is not that bad. It does not hurt to try them out.

Jay S.

Yelp
Excellent Italian deli and grocery store. Not a big store, but they have a very good selection of fresh breads, baked goods, sauces, pasta, prepared dishes and gelato. I loaded up on groceries and got a meatball sub to go. Prices were the lowest for any Italian store in the area I have been to. The sub was perfect. Will definitely come back.
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
I enjoyed Nottoli for the most part. I always get an Italian sub whenever I try these types of places. If they can do that sub well then I venture into other sandwiches. Overall it's a really solid sandwich. The talking point for anyone who goes here will be the bread. It's a hard crust with a flaky, soft interior. If that's not your style and you prefer the chewier high gluten flower bread than you may not enjoy this sandwich as much as I did. My only knock is the three times I've ordered I've asked for lettuce, tomato, onion, dressing and a very light spread of mayo. The first time they nailed it. The second time there was no dressing and a little more mayo than I liked, even though I made sure she had the order right. The third time they added the dressing but way too much mayonnaise. None the less it wont stop me from going bc I'm a fan of the Salami, Hot Capicola, Mortadella and provolone they put on the sandwich. Even if cold subs aren't for you they offer a lot of hot sandwiches that look good. Overall a good spot if you're in the area.

Yelp
All I can say is WOW!!! I came here on 07/18/19 and it rocked. My chick has been bringing food home from here for some time, but I have never gone there. Awesome decor, very pleasant employees and AMAZING FOOD. I would suggest coming here if you're in the area and bring home food for later! We always stockpile ha ha. This is located right off Harlem Avenue and there is a big parking lot with tons of spaces. They accept cash and credit (no checks) and minimum purchase for credit card is $10. I ran 7 miles earlier in day and was starving (don't come here when hungry) and got a beef, meatball sandwich and arancini. They were AWESOME. Oh and I may have gotten meatballs to go (no judging). Everything rocked and I can't wait to eat meatballs later. This is the kind of place that deserves to be eaten at regularly and is a north side staple. I'm already planning my next stop back!

Bitch B.

Yelp
Some of the best Italian staples in Chicago! The sausage is delicious!!! Delicious bakery, as well!
google avatar

James T.

Yelp
When making a sandwich, you know the bread is stale, so why make a sandwich for a customer with stale bread, I was very disappointed when I got home and realized this and was not in the mood to listen to lame excuses, I just threw it in the garbage, not a good look for an Italian deli, I gave 2 stars because it was ok in the past.
google avatar

Mary L.

Yelp
The BEST meatball sandwich, and I am very particular about meatballs! An excellent neighborhood spot to pick up lunch and Italian specialties. Very friendly!

Nina V.

Yelp
If I could give negative stars I would. My husband and I left feeling as though we were an inconvenience to the staff. We walked in and we're not greeted but told to hurry up by the older woman at the cash register. We proceeded to the back and by the deli and a younger short man told us "I am only making Italian subs". We were treated as if we did something wrong. We went back to the cashier to check out and the old woman was looking at her watch. I said to her we still have 7 minutes until close. She said "We want to go." She then followed us to the door to lock it behind us as we left. I have never been treated so poorly by an establishment in my life. The Customer service at this place was horrendous. I've also had better quality at other Italian delis.
google avatar

Stephen M.

Yelp
This is an awesome, off the charts, old school Italian deli. You have to experience it to understand just how good it is. Get your butt there soon. You will love it. The meats, the bread, the service. Wonderful.
google avatar

Odo B.

Yelp
Love these old school delis, there are so few left. Beef sandwich was fantastic, peppers great,, great value. Plenty of food here I can't wait to try.

Yelp
After reading about the sub sandwiches from here on Facebook, I had to take the trip up North and give it a try. The people were correct they make a great sub sandwich at Nottoli's. The store is on the small size compared on how people described it, basically it has three aisles. And there no place to sit down and eat here, it is strictly take out. The deli counter is located in the back of the store. They offer up deli meats sliced to order and subs made on the spot. The subs come in three sizes and I was not sure on what size sub would take if my lunch needs. Opted for the nine inch (middle size) and was perfect to take care of my lunch. You get your sub wrapped in plain paper and walk up to the register and pay. They also have other Italian food items for sale. They offer a couple of different toppings, mayo, mustard, and oil. Went with the oil and made sure that it was just a little bit since this was going to be a car meal. The bread was nice and crusty and it held up nice, there was plenty of meats, cheese, and other toppings. And the price was not too bad compared to other sandwich shops. I would highly recommend if you are in the area and like a nice car ride.
google avatar

Yelp
My new favorite spot for sandwich my god are the sandwiches good highly recommended it the taste is amazing and everything is on point happy that it's not to far from my house
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
This is easily the best sub place I have ever been to! If you are looking for great subs, you NEED to come here. The owner and staff are the sweetest people you will ever meet, and they treat everyone like family right when you walk through the door. Every single time I come here now, I get a prosciutto with fresh mozzarella and lettuce sandwich and I crave more every time. Everything is so fresh here, and I have had their Italian sub, as well. Never have I been disappointed. Their prices are also not bad, and you can choose from 6", 9", or 12" sizes. You can even add fresh mozzarella on any sandwich you get for .50 cents extra, which is an amazing deal considering fresh mozzarella is normally very expensive to add. My family and I also get the arancini balls filled with meat, and these are also fresh and they melt in your mouth. You can even re-heat them, and they don't get dry and gross. Just writing this review makes me want to return here very soon!
google avatar

Angel M.

Yelp
Good Italian food hands down. This place was always a go to when I worked at F.C.L Graphics. The sausage and peppers was my go to. Overall good place to eat tho.
google avatar

Idalia N.

Yelp
I'm highly upset that I've lived in the area for over 8 years and just gave this place a try. The food is ridiculously delicious. The staff are very friendly, attentive, give the best recommendations and always give you a warm welcome in. I look forward to trying everything they have.
google avatar

Dave W.

Yelp
Happened to be in the neighborhood. Haven't been there for a few years, but the place is still great. Had an excellent Italian sub and picked up a few items from the deli. Prices are fair and the people are very helpful. Try it!
google avatar

Jeannette T.

Yelp
Super excellent place! A hidden gem. Lots of great sandwiches and pastas! A great place to get food and all things you need to go with your sub!
google avatar

Jason J.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem in the Norwood Park area. I mean it is on Harlem, so it's not really hidden but you could definitely pass by it and not realize what your missing. It's an old school Italian grocery store with a great deli in the back that serves great sandwiches and other Italian favorites. High quality meats and cheeses on crusty bread nothing better than that, and the prices are reasonable too. The arancini is one of the best and I've had it all over. Get it with meat and the red sauce and you will not be disappointed. I'm an Italian sub snob, but this was one that I will go back to again and again, and it's minutes away from my house. I love finding the neighborhood gems.
google avatar

Gerry D.

Yelp
Just left this place. I had the 12 inch beef and cheddar. The sandwich was very tasty and stuffed with meat and cheese! This place has great prices. That sub was only $8.59. Service was quick and friendly. The cashier is a very nice lady. Be sure to check out the entrees that they sell in the cooler!
google avatar

Cody B.

Yelp
This store is so cool. If you are looking for a authentic Italian store then this is what you are looking for. The store is small and has a selection of Italian products such as tomato sauces, other canned goods, seasoning and spices. They also have a nice selection of deli. I went there not for the groceries but for their sandwiches and just thought that I needed to share this good news about them. The staff was friendly and amazing. She recommended their Italian beef sandwich so I decided to have it. She asked me if it would be cold or hot and I prefer hot cause I like it better. It was served quickly and has a nice portion. It was a little bit greasy but it was fine for me because it was so delicious. I had Italian beef sandwich a lot of times and I can say that this one is my favorite. Highly recommended!

Elanders B.

Yelp
Had the Italian beef sweet peppers and mozzarella it was very delicious! Lots of options been there before and will definitely be back.
