Where to Go Eat in Chula Vista - Eater San Diego

"Eastlake’s first ever craft brewery might have a relatively short history, but has upped the ante every step of the way. At their taproom, you can still find the crisp, Brazil-inspired lagers which put Novo Brazil on the map, along with their take on newer trends like sours and hazy IPAs. They have also launched a new line of hard kombucha and landed Tacos La Central as a full time food vendor on their front patio." - Mario A. Cortez

Open-Air Steak and Taco Spot Opening Two Outposts in Chula Vista - Eater San Diego

"A new steak-focused grill will make its debut this Tuesday at Novo Brazil Brewing in the Eastlake suburb of Chula Vista. Setting up shop outside the brewery’s tasting room, La Central is a new eatery from restaurateur Roger Canez, who owns Tijuana’s Sonora Express Meat Boutique and opened Baja tapas spot La Catrina in North Park." - Candice Woo

Great nearby spot to catch a game or to hang out with friends. Big fan of their kombucha, right now my favorite is the Aztec Raspberry. Indoor and outdoor areas, with some lights outside for nice ambiance. Parking can be tight in the front, but there are options on both sides. Customer service is excellent. If you’re getting beer and/or kombucha packs to go, there’s a discount if you buy a case. Food truck outside is really good. Try the Gaucho. I go here regularly, so I definitely recommend it.

Google
A Brazilian-inspired gem located in Chula Vista. Their family-owned brewery infuses every sip with vibrant Brazilian soul. Explore their aromatic, colorful brews in an eye-catching tasting room, where creativity takes center stage.

Google
Great happy hour, staff, and ambiance. Go here for the house brews and southern-style BBQ that's sold at the enterence. Four stars because the owner needs to hire more bartenders - takes a while to order when there's a long line. RECOMMENDED: Rio Pale Ale (8 oz. $3.50).

Google
Really homey, chill brewery. Entrance to the bar is very narrow with barrels for brewing on both sides. Tasting area inside feels small but there’s a tremendous amount of space on the outside. Large TV to watch Padres games is also very impressive. The Mo Mo has to be my favorite brew from here. There’s a food truck here as well.

Google
Great chill atmosphere, occasional events and good drinks! One of the best spots towards East Lake. Shoutout to Caio and the team for making it happen.

Google
First and foremost, I have to give credit to the amazing service that I received from John! The kombuchas on tap are super fresh and delicious. There's plenty of space & the food truck has some good options. Affordable and they have specials for all patrons. Military on law enforcement on Sundays! Half of Growlers on Wednesday, suggest that day to come and fill up the grapefruit IPA. And as I post this on a Monday I'd like to emphasize on all night happy hour. Sold.

Google
nice and clean brewery but only one bartender so if the place is packed you will be waiting awhile for your beer...sometimes they have a food truck outside...

J Toth

Google
Great local brewery with fruity beer combinations. They typically have a food truck and the atmosphere is pretty chill. I'm a fan of the Ipanema Dipa, too bad their beers are hard to find at local stores!

Yelp
Coco Haze is my main squeeze here. If they ever get rid of it I'll be done coming here. This location has food vendors outside and they're hit and miss but I'm not here for them. I'm here for the beer. Like I said, Coco Haze is my Ride or Die. Please don't ever let her go. By the way: I tried the Pineapple Haze. It doesn't taste like pineapple! Do better.

Yelp
Came to Novo as Chili's was an hour wait haha. Novo has a ton of seating and alcoholic beverages which is nice. Service was not bad however there was one server who was super friendly and loved his job. Chips and guacamole: the star was the salsa which was spicy but delicious. Steak and fries (yucca): steak was cooked to perfection and was juicy. The dish was a not very cohesive with the random pile of breadcrumbs on the side which soaked up the steak juices (unless that was the implied meaning). I chose yucca fries but they were soggy - recommend regular fries as they were crunchy and well seasoned. Prime Sirloin con Fritas: I had expected the sirloin to be a steak but it was strips of beef so regardless of steak doneness, it will come out well done. The fries were delicious as they were seasoned well and soaked up the juices/oil from the dish.

Yelp
This location is tucked away in Eastlake. A lot less busier than the mall location. They have a great selection of drinks on tap and cans to go.

Yelp
I'll start with the positive, the food tasted amazing and it's reasonably priced considering the portion. We ordered: an empanada, onion rings, cheese balls, 2 burgers for around $75. Food took a bit to come out but it was during the dinner rush. Only downside is that everything is served in paper plates. This was our first time here and weren't sure where to ordered etc. We made our way inside, the bartender looked like he hated being there. ZERO customer service from this point until we left. He provided zero guide for the drinks and food menu. We finally made our way back outside, seating is first come first serve. Throughout the evening the same bartenders made their way picking up glass containers for the drinks. Again, no customer service whatsoever. They just reached over your table/food to grab them not saying one word. Even after being thanked by multiple people, they still said nothing. This will definitely be the first and last time we came. The food is not worth being around that type of atmosphere. There were flies EVERYWHERE, keep that in mind if you're leaving your plate unattended.

Yelp
Kombuchas and beers on tap, food trucks and a nice outdoor area to chill. Nothing too special but a good place to stop in after work. They had a POG IPA that I actually really enjoyed. Good variety and friendly guys.

Yelp
We have been coming to this location since they first opened up waaay back in the day. Back when they had crazy Groupon deals. I love this location so much. And of course the Sunset Slam Kombucha is my favorite!!
google avatar

Christina X.

Yelp
I have been here many times (as in more than a dozen times) since before Covid. My husband and I came here whenever we just wanted to get out of the house and didn't have any other good ideas of where we wanted to be. I love their kombucha. They serve beer and limited hard seltzer water as well. Dog friendly, staff is nice (offered my pup treat when I took him here). Many hard kombucha options to choose from. They are all very good. Food truck is available. I have never eat there but looks okay to me. The place also sells ice cream (probably for kids?) it had a lot of seatings and outside seatings are comfy and nice during summer. I love this place and have been here more than a couple dozen times. Military discount available on Sundays

Yelp
Great brew! Original location....shhh! Nice and quiet, not over crowded...actually, everyone will hate it

Yelp
I love NOVO! We've been supporting this business since they first opened their tasting room!

Yelp
Went in on a Sunday afternoon. Steady stream of people, but never busy enough where I had to wait to get a drink. The place is huge, and has outdoor space as well as the indoor taproom. They have murals on their brewing tanks, which adds a uniqueness to the space. I did 2 flights while there to try some of their beers and their kombucha. For me, their beer is ok. It's tough to really stand out in the saturated SD beer world. As far as their alcoholic kombucha though, I think it's really good. It doesn't seem overly loaded with sugar, and they have a lot of unique flavors. I would definitely return for that. There's no set food there, but they do have rotating food trucks. I look forward to trying their other locations where they make their own food. I really like their branding, and the Brazilian inspiration to their drinks and facility are really fun.

Yelp
We stopped at Novo because we were shopping Otay Ranch and every time I'm in the area they're so busy, this time they had just opened so it seemed like the perfect time to visit. The food was mediocre to say the least. The mac n'cheese noodles were over cooked, there was also a hair in it. I didn't complain at the time because I hate putting wait staff in those uncomfortable scenarios. The empanadas were very fluffy but the meat was like ground beef and unflavored. I was expecting to be shocked with Brazilian flavors but it was very bland. My kid got the quesadilla and fries which was good for her. The fries were super good. My husband and friends got beer, they said it was decent. Considering the prices and the size of the restaurant I expected more. We likely will not go again.

Yelp
I always have a great time at this bar. The outdoor seating is nice. I tried the pink mango seltzer and it was delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Visited this Brewery while down in SD. The place seems pretty awesome! As far as I could tell, they were following the Covid rules. Walking inside was spectacular. It was colorful and clean. I would imagine this is how a Brazilian theme would be. They had a wide selection of drinks; the only thing I wish they had was a dark. I believed they just ran out of their one.... But they do have a wide selection of everything else. I guess what they are most famous for is their kombucha hard drinks. Most are a hit, with a few misses, but that is more preference. There is a fridge that has a mix of their cans, which is a nice option; but too bad we could not mix and match our own. Overall, I would go back to see what they added.
google avatar

Jessica Y.

Yelp
Great products. Actually, best kombucha I've ever had in my life. I don't even like kombucha normally, but this is so easy to drink. Also, they're run by Brazilians, aka the best people you could ever meet. Very fun and very devoted to San Diego
google avatar

Regina P.

Yelp
The food here was by a torta truck. It was delicious! The service was amazing! The bartender was informative on flavors and guided my husband and I to pick our flights. The price was reasonable! Plus Thursday night is karaoke which was so much fun! Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Shannon B.

Yelp
One of my favorites. I love the carne asada bowl and the sexy mojito! I also love the environment at both Chula Vista locations! Although seating can sometimes be challenging at the Lane Ave. location.
google avatar

Ali B.

Yelp
Not a beer drinker but I am obsessed with kombucha. Usually I get non alcoholic but I had to try the alcoholic ones here! There were so many options that I could not decide and for a flight of 6. Was it too much kombucha? Yes. Do I regret ordering it? Nope! I tried açaí, mango ginger, tangerine, hibiscus, passion fruit, and I am forgetting the last one! They were all tasty, the mango ginger one had a really strong ginger taste. My fave by far was the açaí but I also loved the passion fruit. I definitely would try the pink mango hard seltzer if I were to come back. They were out of the first 2 beers my husband tried to order but our server told us his fave and helped my husband make some good beer choices! My Husband enjoyed his 2 beers! I'd love to come back next time I'm in town!
google avatar

Natasha B.

Yelp
Terrible acoustics and way too loud. You can barely socialize. Service was a bit slow. However, food and drinks were good!
google avatar

Nelly M.

Yelp
Not my type of restaurant, It's too loud in there. The food is mediocre and not that great. It's a little worse than Ballast point. I think Cutwater restaurant would be my choice instead. A sex on the beach was $15 each. Definitely won't go back here again. The only great thing I do have to say is that the servers were very fast and nice.
google avatar

Calina N.

Yelp
Nice ambiance and great food and beer. Located in the mall so plenty of parking. I would come back here.
google avatar

Kristine W.

Yelp
This place has the potential of being a hit!!! It's huge. And it's great for large groups. There's an outside patio that overlooks the mall shoppers. There's bar top seating, lounge chair seating, booth type seats, & high top tables as well! They serve food and their drinks are of a wide variety. My only suggestion for this place would be, to let your customers breathe. There were too many waiters asking my friend & I if 'we were doing ok'. After awhile, it becomes a bit much & ultimately I found myself leaving because I just wanted to have a convo without being interrupted often.
google avatar

Erivelton L.

Yelp
Healthy and fresh food , great environment , awesome service , best place in town to watch games and have a nice time
google avatar

Chaudhry A.

Yelp
Apparently, coz of the rains, I've been at places right in the middle of the day when they are just opened. And same happened here. It's situated quite away from busy shopping areas, which I guess was the same case with those in Mira Mesa area in the beginning. There is a good list of different types of beers, I could drink one as it was really empty there. It seems pretty spacious from outside, however, an average sized seating area inside.
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
LOVELY SETUP ! My wife and I made the long drive to Chula Vista on Saturday morning to have lunch at Novo Brazil Brewing inside the Otay Ranch Town Center. That was a totally awesome experience ! Leonardo Bauer the GM said we should check out the Novo Brazil Brewery nearby so we did. We parked our car in their parking lot and I headed inside to check things out. A lot of huge beer vats with colorful murals painted on many of them. There were a few drinkers at the bar inside and a food truck tent set up outside. It was fun to see !
google avatar

Dustin P.

Yelp
Good beers and atmosphere. Great views of the bay and the city. Food is forgettable. Fish Burrito is ok. Burger was overcooked and tasted burnt (ordered med rare). Service has room for improvement. The waitress didn't check in until our party was finished and made me feel guilty for not getting up and locating her to tell her my food was overdone.
google avatar

Jinhee K.

Yelp
Great place to hang out with friends and family! I've tried several times, But Kombucha is not that good. But beer and foods are good! Will definitely be coming back to try other beer
google avatar

Shanita W.

Yelp
Amazing atmosphere, food, drinks and prices! Great outdoor seating with a big screen TV to watch sporting events! Highly recommend for a family or company outing.
google avatar

Vincent C.

Yelp
Whenever I'm in the area I make it a point to stop by here because the beer is cold, tasty and affordable. This is a huge location but the actual tasting room is not that big. The times I've been there the bar tenders were cool but I really like Paula well I think that was her name. This is pretty much the only brewery in the area so it can get pretty busy here. The vibe here is cool and relaxed plus they have some big screens TV's. They have a little bit of everything from IPAs to Kombucha. Seeing how this is the only brewery in the area they run out of beer often so keep that in mind. I like coming here and will make this a pit stop whenever I'm around.
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
Salsa tastes like spaghetti sauce and the food came out COLD! Drinks are decent, but not my favorite. Service was awesome though, it's like a little service team for each table! The vibe is cool, but I wish there were some shop games or something, not just a bunch of empty space. Guess the preference would be more of a sports bar type atmosphere for me!
google avatar

AL S.

Yelp
I had seen this hard kombucha at nearly every store I visit and I had no idea it was a San Diego local brand! Their bright, geometric packaging is hard to miss! I took a lazy Sunday drive down Proctor Road and ended up 2 minutes from here. I was looking for a pint and some food and this place came up on yelp. I was so surprised I had never been here. I LOVE their kombucha but had no idea they also did beer. Tried 6 or so kombucha flavors with the Lychee, Tangerine Cayenne Pepper and Hot Cactus being the crowd favorites. Their Mango IPA is amazing. Has a strong fruit flavor without being cloying or overpowering. Such a piney IPA with fruit flavor seems like a rare combo but is now quickly becoming one of my favorite beers! This location doesnt have the restaurant portion like their newer location but it does have some great food truck options! We also stocked up on so many beers to take home. I will be coming back here again and again!

Lisha L.

Yelp
Yes good for fight to watch or UFC great to dine in or outside very nice food good drinks is as well great happy hour

Carmen G.

Yelp
Excellent service. Salads bar is delicious and good meat quality. Note: take advantage of lunch prices, even if you go only for the salad, it is worded
google avatar

Vince R.

Yelp
This brewery was good. I went in the evening, there was a small crowd but nothing crazy. The food was good & quickly served. The food was served from a taco truck outside. Overall the beer was great and awesome! Everything I ate was delicious and would recommend to everyone!
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
Total ripoff... Burger, fries and a 16oz beer for $40!? How does an $8-10 burger & fries become $18? How did the 4oz tasters become $3.60 each after the waiter said, "They start at $1.80."? Wait. There's also one on my receipt for $4.20. For a 4oz taster?! So, the equivalent of one 16oz beer was $14.60. That's completely nuts. After tax and tip, my burger, fries and 16oz beer totaled $40.34. I will not be at Novo novamente...
google avatar

Bert G.

Yelp
Novo Brazil's tasting room is a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. Be advised, they don't prepare food here, so it's truly a beer tasting experience. It's sort of hidden, but if you are familiar with the Scripps Coastal medical center, Novo Brazil is in the next lot north on Lane Avenue The beers are really excellent, although I admit to trying only two of them. I found their brews to be refreshing, bright, and certainly not face-puckeringly bitter. In other words, enjoyable. I like that they list both the ABV (alcohol by volume) and the IBU (International Bitterness Units) on the menu board. It helps with one's selection process. Parking can be a little difficult, since it's in an industrial park, but there is always the gigantic Scripps lot next door, I guess. One of the staff members chatted with us, and mentioned that a new facility will be opening soon in Chula Vista, and there will be food prepared there, as well as a complete assortment of brews. We brought some souvenir glasses home and look forward to our next visit.
google avatar

Daniela H.

Yelp
This is the first brewery Ive been to and although they dont have food inside the actual place there are taco trucks right outside! The workers are nice and they do have a variety of drinks that you can choose from. Its a great place to go by and chill with your friends, there's benches outside and seating inside as well. I hope i've got the location right, but the one I went to in Lane Ave has trivia nights on Wednesdays!
google avatar

Yelp
Alright, Novo Brazil! Being down in Chula, this is now the most Southern brewery in CA I've been to. & I've been to a bunch. Check out the list, you'll see what I mean: https://www.yelp.com/list/i-yelp-california-beer-paso-robles-2 Anyhow, arriving on an early Monday afternoon, I nearly had the whole the place to myself. Because, really, who's out drinking beer then? I am, every chance I get. I parked right in front of the roll up door that leads into the brewery & followed the path to the right to the taproom. Brewery & taproom alike are good looking spaces with lots of polished wood. Since it wasn't too long until I had to get up to SAN & catch a flight out of town, I just did a flight of 4 tasters. The beertender was friendly & patient as I tried to make my picks from over a dozen beers on tap. Finally figuring it out, I tried 2 hazy IPA's, a grapefruit DIPA, & a Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout. The hoppy stuff was excellent. Like I rated those an average of 4.4 out of 5 on my Untappd, excellent. But that BA Imperial Stout, their Corvo Negro Barrel Reserve, that was no bueno. The taster I had was off, soured. Too bad. I've had other Novo Brazil beers before at Bottlecraft too & those were all good. Novo Brazil Brewing, I'm a fan. The brewery/ taproom in Chula Vista is a cool spot & I've enjoyed all the Novo Brazil beers I've tried, except 1. I know hiccups happen. I'll still drink Novo Brazil beers whenever I find them.

Yelp
Came here twice already. Loved it after the first try. Only have tried the Kombucha. Pros: Drinks have been great every time. Amazing staff, and they recommend drinks based on what you like. Cons: Not sure what the name is (Nova or Novo)?‍ Look at pictures posted. Let me know your thoughts.
google avatar

Anthony D.

Yelp
A little bit on the pricey side when it comes to food and entrance tickets. But that's not the main reason why I come here The main reason is being able to watch UFC and boxing fights in a LIT atmosphere. The crowds here are just simply different
google avatar

Mark R.

Yelp
Drinks are great here. Great atmosphere for a large group. Appetizers were pretty good as well. Overall not a bad spot to hang out with friends.
google avatar

Scott B.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere with a beautiful artistic tasting room. Huge fan of their hard kombuchas. The Tangerine Cayenne Pepper is honestly the best hard kombucha flavor I have ever had and the Hot Cactus was really good too. Also, the food truck serves killer empanadas! Check out frequentflighters.com for my full review.
google avatar

Virginia S.

Yelp
This is souly based on their kombucha...so if you are looking to find out about their beer, don't keep reading. They have a non-alcoholic along with an array of various flavored "easy" kombuchas, 6% alcohol content for the ones I tried today. My favorites from today were their Mango-Ginger and Hibiscus-Lavender. The Tangerine-Cayenne tasted like an orange juice mimosa without the champagne and Acai-Guava was fruity but just preferred the roundedness flavoring of the other 2 better. Their non-alcoholic was bland, which is fine, since their focused on the others. Service was good, plenty of seating inside and out as well as clean throughout. Noise level was easy to have conversation, not too rowdy at 3pm on a Friday.
google avatar

Justin R.

Yelp
Beer is decent but not as good as other places. a little pricey but good enough. Lots of seating especially outside and stays open late.
google avatar

Rachel K.

Yelp
John is my man. I just love this guy. Highly suggest the Grapefruit IPA. Service is BOMB. Monday's ALL day HOPPY Hour. Wednesday's 30% Half off Growlers and they APPRECIATE THE MILITARY HOMIES. Friday nights it gets PACKED. All good vibes. Love this spot.
google avatar

Arlyn A.

Yelp
So sad, I have been coming here since last year and I have never been charged for TAJIN AND CHAMOY RIM. And how they are charging $1.50 for it. Unbelievable! It made my drinks so expensive! DONT ORDER ANY RIM
google avatar

Tamara L.

Yelp
After having their mango beer at the Seven Seas food festival SeaWorld I couldn't wait to go to the brewery and check out the venue. I don't want to bash the place cuz I'm really excited about breweries in San Diego and the opportunity to test your pallets however this was a Let-Down. I will include my response that I left directly on their Facebook page: "one glass short to complete 2 flights and all the beers aren't even cold... Luke cool at best. Out of mango and grapefruit beer, and mango hibiscus kamboucha. Father's Day flop" Their reply : "We are sorry to hear that, thank you for communicating it with us. We'll be working on it." Warm beer is not a standard or expectation in America may be in some places in Europe. Not having enough glasses... I think we were the only two flights, everybody had pints so I'm not sure why you have nine out of 10 glasses and why you don't have enough for 15-20 flights. The reply unfortunately was mediocre and at minimum effort to be kind there was no empathy no trying to win back the customer know extended customer service in there reply I'm definitely not inspired are encouraged to go back a recommend the venue.

Yelp
One word pretty much sums up this brewery for me. CLEAN. Like you can eat off the floor clean. I've visited small SD breweries and always noticed the facility were sticky, dirty, spills everywhere, etc. Novo Brazil's facility was so organized and pristine. The bar area was simple with one or two tvs. I think they had over 15(?)+ drafts that day as well. It wasn't hard finding their location as they share the building with a bike company (I think). The brew has their logo on the building so it was easy to see from the street. We tried a flight and liked the presentation. The flight pours were decently generous as well. I can't remember all the beers we tried but I do remember liking the Mango and Grapefruit IPA. Those two beers would give the bigger known giant brew house (ahem Ballast) a nice stiff competition. We even got a tour of the brewery which further solidified how darn clean this place is. Even on a rainy day. I ended buying a growler and having it filled with the Mango IPA for a dinner party that night. The growler was labeled and filled to the top. Friends enjoyed it and it made for friendly discussion about the breweries that have sprouted in San Diego.
google avatar

Susan B.

Yelp
Have been there a few times in the last months. I am disappointed that you have ended your Happy Hour menu, as many times groups of my friends and work celebrations have been held here during those hours. I had wished that the hours would be extended to 6 (like many other establishments), but now none is offered at all! I am not sure how often I will return for a drink and light snack at the current $. $12 is a bit much for fries!

Yelp
Great brewery in Chula Vista! Within the business district. I recommend coming hungry because they serve Brazilian food out front & I was so bummed because I had just eaten! It smelled so good. They also have free popcorn inside. The brewery is large & as you walk over to the tap area, you can see all the equipment they use to brew their delicious beer. Lots of televisions playing sporting events & friendly bartender. Half pints $3-$6 Pints $6-$9 Flights of 4 $8 Tripple (Strong Belgium Ale): Yum! Maracuja (American Wit Passion Fruit 2x): I was afraid that 2x would make it sour but it was not! An extra boost of fruitiness to make it even more refreshing & tasty!
