NU Kitchen - Review - Boston - The Infatuation

"Apparently, “nu” is French for naked, which is pretty close to how we’ve eaten most of our meals during the pandemic. This Somerville spot has a substantial menu of things like breakfast sandwiches, burritos, Hawaiian bowls, and burgers. Everything’s available for delivery, so no, you don’t need to put pants on. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

Got delivery through Peach app, good quality and tasty lunch options. Tried their chipotle avocado bowl with corn and black beans, though it’s healthy option, it’s bland, no flavors, no seasoning. The spicy chipotle sauce didn’t have any spice and very small portion.

Google
This place is wonderful! Cute space with a great menu that has a lot of options. We got: egg Florentine sandwich, Spanish scramble bowl, SoCal smoothie, berry fusion smoothie, and strawberry banana smoothie. Everything there was fresh and delicious! It was different from other locations flavor wise and it just felt light and not super heavy. Wish I had one closer in Southwest Boston cause this is amazing! There is meter street parking outside

Google
Had an awesome experience at NU Kitchen in Somerville! The atmosphere was welcoming and relaxed, perfect for grabbing a bite or just hanging out. The food was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with quality ingredients. The staff was very friendly making the whole visit even better. Definitely a go-to spot if you're looking for a great meal with a chill vibe. Highly recommend checking it out!

Google
I had a fantastic experience at NU Kitchen! The food is great, offering a variety of affordable vegan options, with the added flexibility of adding protein if desired. I highly recommend trying one of their warm bowls; they’re filling, taste amazing, and are a healthy choice. Overall, it’s a wonderful spot for anyone looking for delicious plant-based meals without breaking the bank!

Google
Super healthy and delicious spot with lots of veggie and vegan options 💯 plus some of the packaging is compostable. I really enjoy the juice and smoothies in particular. And the location itself is a nice place to eat and hang out.

Google
Found NU Kitchen while staying at the Holiday Inn down the road for the Boston marathon. This bowl was fresh, tasty, and the best breakfast for the morning after running the marathon.. and the cold brew was excellent. The service was friendly and accommodating to my dietary restrictions. Highly recommend this place!

Google
I been coming here since it opened. It was incredible when it opened then it crashed hard for a while and then it's definitely made a comeback. Some critiques? They close early and now with Life Alive open down the street that's not a good idea. The only sides they offer are (spicy cucumber salad or chips) neither of which I like. They need more options, they need a menu refresh. The staff is great, the food is great, the seating and atmosphere is good. I like this place and want them to continue to succeed.

Google
Great food work lots of variety! Excellent vegan options too, if that's what you're looking for. I only wish the menu listed common allergens more clearly so I didn't have to ask questions about each dish.

Yelp
Three times in a row they have failed to include the $10 smoothly I purchased. 1st time was an Uber eats delivery. Then, yesterday, I went in for pickup and they tried to give me my order with no smoothie. When asked to please make my smoothie, the smoothie man crossed his arms and stood still, staring, as if questioning the validity of my request. After some prodding from another employee, he begrudgingly made my smoothie. Today, again ordering on Uber Eats, they sent the delivery person to my house with no smoothie. Two problems: The smoothie guy is rude, and their counter staff are handing orders to delivery drivers without making sure every item is included. EDIT: I tried two more times. They didn't forget the smoothie, but they did forget the straw both times.

Yelp
I've been here twice and the food and people working have been great. However, the second time, I randomly asked for a receipt and noticed a hidden fee. There is a 3% "Admin Charge" secretly added to the order, and the only way this was even known is because I happened to request that receipt. I don't see anywhere that declares a charge (menu, website), and on top of all this, we're paying tax on that charge. This is shady and should be removed. Lack of transparency is not cool; either price things accordingly or declare charges so we can decide if we want to even come here.

Yelp
While I am grateful they have vegan options, the items were had were not that great. I ordered the pesto vegan chicken panini, and it was ok but not anything I would want to eat again. I didn't like the texture or flavor of the faux chicken. There are a lot of takes of faux chicken, and this felt more like a chickpea patty. It was just strange. My husband had a salad with vegan chicken added, and it was very uninspired, consisting mostly of iceberg lettuce. All in all, the food was fine, but neither of us felt that the price tag matched the quality or taste.

Yelp
Overall, NU Kitchen offers a wide menu of items that will satisfy a broad range of preferences. We tried the Spanish scramble burrito and bowl, the super fruit waffle, and some drinks. The Spanish scramble burrito was better overall than the Spanish scramble bowl. The avocado refresher smoothie was also very good. Ambiance is also spacious and modern. All together, they offer some solid breakfast and lunch options with lots of vegetarian and vegan options. Check them out if you're in the area!

Yelp
I ate at NU two different times while visiting Newburyport MA. Both coffees and breakfast were excellent.

Yelp
We ordered brunch from NU Kitchen for take-out through GrubHub (love to see healthier options on the platform!), and I wouldn't hesitate to do so again or come in and stay a while, since the space looks really nice. As we were driving to pick up, I got a call from the staff saying they were out of 2 of the items we'd ordered, and they offered alternatives. Kindly, they allowed me to choose a drink at a higher price point with no extra charge. Great service! Pick-up was easy, as I just gave my name at the counter and they had my bag and drinks ready for me. In terms of food, we really enjoyed the Chipotle Avocado & Lime Bowl - it was filling and fresh with no meat in sight! We also liked the short rib torta, which is a breakfast sandwich with egg. Flavorful but a bit too much bread for my taste. For drinks, we got iced matcha and chai lattes with oat milk, and I preferred the chai. And the cinnamon scone was deeelish! Who NU?! NU Kitchen is great!

Yelp
Food had cheese and was therefore not vegan. It's just sad when restaurants have a lot of vegan items but it is only lip service. I get that a lot of people struggle with this idea (veganism), but still. I do have a suggestion that I think would be helpful. Just put (maybe) in the menu item that's supposed to be vegan.

Yelp
Classic new Somerville joint with healthy breakfast options. It's a bit pricey, but typical for the type of food and the area. Friendly staff. 20/30

Yelp
What can I say about this place.... Well, for starters finding parking! It took three passes in the neighborhood to find a parking space, and once I did the meter was broken... I would say for neighboring locals this is a great place to walk to, but for someone from out of the area or just out of the area who was trying to find parking it's probably not the best. Also, I found once entering the restaurant that it seemed as slightly chaotic, odd. There were approximately tweve people behind the counter but no one personing the front registers to take orders. There was one customer in front of me who was picking up her food, and she was standing at the front counter -- but no one approached me right away. I kind of had to make myself known. I ordered a barbecue tofu and wanted to get a drink but when I saw that the prices starting at $10 -- well, it was a little bit too steep for me (try $5-7, and maybe I'd bite). When I ordered the sandwich they asked if I wanted a salad or chips and of course I wanted to know what was in the salad. The woman behind the counter didn't know so she had to ask someone who had to ask someone. Finally, they managed to figure out it was made with sesame seeds so I couldn't get the salad because it comes premade this way I suppose. If any restaurant wants to educate their employees about healthy food, clean food etc. please note that all seeds, despite their health benefits in nutrients, are inedible by people with either diverticulosis or diverticulitis. So I got chips. All that said, I want to say that the sandwich itself -- the barbecue tofu was absolutely delicious. Save the fact that I did not know that it had mushrooms, which I don't like, it was a delicious bite and I'm sure they're juices are scrummy as well, just not worth $10 to me, bar none. All in all, it was a frustrating experience but I will say that the food lives up to its potential.

Yelp
Menu is full of healthy, yet tasty options! NU Kitchen has a bunch of fresh smoothies, coffees, sandwiches, bowls and salads. But my favorite thing to get is the Acai bowl! Acai bowls here are legit and so good! I love how NU Kitchen is loaded with toppings so there is almost 1:1 ratio of topping to acai which never happens! I've tried the Oahu and Maui; both were good but I prefer the Oahu more. The cocoa nibs are bomb and plentiful. The acai is also creamy from the oat milk! Short rib torta was delicious. The short rib is super tender with great flavor, crunch from the light crunch of the bread, and slight heat from the peppers. The egg and avocado are a nice extra touch that goes together so well. Short Rib banh mi was an interesting take on banh mi, but quite pricey for the size and compared to a traditional banh mi. Prefer the torta more.

Yelp
This is the type of place I would normally expect to have bland, but healthy food. I was downright surprised by how delicious my order was. I'm super happy to have found this place and see myself ordering from here a lot.
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
I have been here a few times in the past few years and it seems like it's downgraded every time I go back. I got a the honey goat avocado sandwich and it wasn't the best , not thing really special..pretty bland actually. I really like their cold pressed juices though. The service is fine, the girl at the front was pretty rude when I came in when I asked I had a order to pick up. The location is a bit odd too. Overall I think they can rebrand and revamp their business, it definitely has potential.
google avatar

Savana G.

Yelp
The food is good. Not so much a "knock your socks off" place. Chorizo is a little dry. Love the menu though - this is perfect for this area being a healthy/fresh place. Dirty tables, iced tea/drinks came out very late way after the food came out, difficult to find parking along this busy road. I'm only giving it 4 stars because of it's potential. All these caveats can be easily managed to make this place amazing.

Yelp
This place is great, especially if you're gluten free and/or dairy free! We ordered three additional eggs and there was a mix up and we only got two. They sent out one on the house. Everything was delicious. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
I like this place quite a bit! Really healthy menu and good options that will leave you satisfied but not hating yourself for what you have just done. Acai bowls here are quite good, they are loaded up and a good value for what you pay, and the texture of the acai is really good - super creamy and delicious. Also tried the sandwiches which are very good, the short rib torta is really great, and although non-traditional I enjoyed their rendition of the banh mi. Would like to come back again maybe to try some other types of acai bowl.

Yelp
I discovered NU kitchen through yelp and have been going back ever since. I LOVE the avocado chipotle lime bowl. I love it so much that I never order anything else... I usually add salmon or eat it without a protein. It's roughly 9 or 10 for the bowl and the salmon brings it to about $15 with tax. The salmon is slow cooked so it's super soft and delicious. It's not usually crowded so it's a nice place to meet friends to catch up. No stress on having to leave!

Yelp
absolutely delicious food- the bahn mi bowl was a scrumptious collaboration of tangy, sweet, and savory (i got it with a beautifully-braised slice of tofu). my parents, who aren't vegetarian but are game to try boston's selection of vegan-y health-food-adjacent sort of places, both really enjoyed their meals. i also got a scrumptious charcoal latte..... obsessed with the ability to drink charcoal.. (i know this isn't specific to nu kitchen but good gravy, what a novel beverage!). the restaurant itself is super spacious and well-decorated. it was clean, comfortable, and well-lit. despite being kind of egregiously close to close, the folks on shift were friendly and we got our food with barely any wait (great service). would recommend, and WILL be going back to work my way through those seasonal lattes.
google avatar

Gia M.

Yelp
Great selection of vegan and non-vegan options. I got the honey goat sandwich but with no cheese, so it was more of a classic egg and avocado breakfast sandwich. I also ordered the matcha latte, which was delicious and not overly sweet like many other restaurants / cafes. The place felt overly smokey with poor ventilation, which made eating inside a bit uncomfortable. Other than that, it was decorated cute and trendy and the service was fast.
google avatar

Ashley F.

Yelp
Owner got back to me with a really sincere message and an offer for a refund & gift card for the previous bad experience. Unfortunately I have to head out of the area tomorrow or else I would take him up on that offer! I decided to change my rating since it wasn't his fault to begin with. Just some immaturity among some of his employees. I'm sure it won't happen again. FYI- He also added "if you order online though our website vs grubhub there is less room for mistakes and less fees on both ends as well." Food was pretty good, and my fiance said he liked his breakfast sandwich, so good job. Until next time.

Yelp
I got the Chipotle Avocado & Lime Bowl the first time and have become a repeat customer now. Perfect portion, tastes very good and makes me feel like I've had a healthy lunch. I've never been in person, but the delivery has always been fast. Also got the Oahu Acai once and would recommend it to any açaí lover.

Yelp
What a terrible place!! Very expensive and the food is so bad! My husband order their smoothie with cold brew and cinnamon and what just terrible. It tasted like if you were eating cinnamon from a straw! We ordered the chorizo burrito- with a very long and black hair inside- and the Turkey Bacon wrap that had very little meat and a lot of lettuce. I like the berry smoothie and the Oreo muffin! Anyway I would no recommend this place. There are so many better places in the area!
google avatar

Yelp
My go-to for quick, delicious and healthy take-out. I like the way the interior is designed with choices of high tables and chairs. Service has always been curteous and friendly.
google avatar

Iris P.

Yelp
such a delicious acai bowl! a bit smaller than i thought (compared to the dine-in pictures) but the acai base was really tasty, and the strawberries were so fresh. paired really well with the cacao nibs and toasted coconut. the aesthetic of the cafe is also really cute!

Yelp
I just wanted to give props to the Supervisor Rose at Nu Kitchen Somerville,MA. She went above and beyond to help us with a CC transaction that we had issues with. The third party we used (doordash) to order a large lunch order for the office didn't go through properly and DOORDASH was not helpful at all. Rose then took it upon herself to escalate the issue and help us resolve the problem very quickly . We want to thank her for her professionalism and help today it definitely doesn't go unnoticed . -Kirstie (office manager) & the team at Skin Center Boston

Yelp
Got the Buddha bowl for delivery, for lunch at work this week. It was definitely a pick-me-up. Delicious sweet potato, lovely tahini dressing, pickles and slices of avocado really go well atop the grains. Filling and well balanced!
google avatar

Sarah O.

Yelp
The honey latte was so yum! The honey goat cheese avocado sandwich was good-- the gluten free bread made it a little less so, but what is gluten free bread is actually good?
google avatar

Libby B.

Yelp
The food was delicious, but the staff seemed quite stressed out and rude. Once I paid (and left a nice tip) the person who took the order didn't say "thank you". I stepped aside to wait for our food and noticed the next person ordered, payed with cash, and when they received their change and said thank you, the person who served them replied "yup". I think thanking someone for their business (and a tip for taking an order) is basic. Also, the bathroom was very dirty.

Yelp
We LOVE Nu kitchen. Their food is so flavorful and it is healthy and satisfying. They have great options for vegan/gf and are conscious of allergies. Highly recommend the smoothie bowls and edamame dumplings. The portions are very good too!
google avatar

Melissa T.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places in Somerville! Take-out or sit-down it always hits. They have an extensive healthy menu with acai bowls (yuuum), breakfast, sandwiches, salads, smoothies, juices, and lots of vegan/vegetarian options. Their coffee menu is also impressive, they have several different kinds of lattes I have yet to try . Have only tried the chai latte which was delicious but also saw maple, honey, and tumeric! annnnd they serve alcohol! It really doesn't get much better than that. Also everyone who works here is very nice.
google avatar

Yelp
I only ever get the açaí bowl and blackberry iced tea, and both are delicious. highly recommend.

Yelp
There was nothing special about my food just good typical breakfast. The bartender was nice and attentive.

Yelp
LOVE LOVE LOVE NU Kitchen. During college I spent a lot of time at Nu Kitchen (or Nu Cafe) as it used to be called in Worcester and was so excited to come and check out the new Somerville location. I had the Chipotle Avocado and Lime Bowl and it was super refreshing and delicious. The flavors blended well together and the food was very filling. The vegan/ vegetarian options are plentiful here and would highly recommend if you follow a more plant based diet. The overall aesthetic felt like a cute little cafe. Many people sat around working on laptops and this space seems great to come with a few friends or alone to study. The greenery and dim lightning felt cozy yet inviting. The main reason I decided to give this place a (4/5) and not 5 stars has to do with how expensive the meal was. The bowl itself was around 10 dollars and I added vegan protein which was another 4 dollars. So, this probably isn't somewhere you would come everyday but for a quick bite on the weekend that's healthy, appetizing, and filling stop by!
google avatar

Haley G.

Yelp
We are huge fans of Nu and constantly get their coffee and smoothies. Today they were extra wonderful when my clumsy self tripped and dropped both the açaí bowls we had just gotten they were so quick to help out and get us new ones. The service is always wonderful, food is always great. Definitely recommend it!

Yelp
LOVE. So many good qualities about this restuaurant, so here I go. 1. The restaurant aesthetic is on point. The decor is earthy and welcoming. There are large windows that let in natural light and its just a cute spot in general. 2. The restaurant is large, and as a result, there is a lot of seating. This isn't your typical Somerville cafe that is so TINY with negative seating. 3. This is a healthy cafe but you dont leave feeling hungry, the food portions are a good size! Additionally, Nu Kitchen isn't so overly down the health rabbit hole that it doesn't taste good. For ex: you can get meat/bread/dairy etc etc. I ordered the Good Morning smoothie and it was delicious! I don't know if I will ever try another smoothie on the menu because it was that good. I'm a sucker for peanut butter in a smoothie and ugh this was so good. I also ordered the Chipotle and Avocado Lime Bowl and this was also a success. I will dream about the spicy chipotle lime dressing, so good. This bowl had it all! Avocado, tomato, onion, cilantro etc etc etc. The quinoa was cooked and seasoned perfectly as well. Overall, great experience here. I highly recommend trying this place out! I went with four stars instead of 5 because of the price! I recognize most places like this tend to be on the more expensive side, however I thought it was pricey without adding protein!

Yelp
After eating a bunch of really good, but rather unhealthy food for the last week, this place was a healthy reduce that was much needed. We saw the good reviews online and we figured parking would be better here than in downtown Boston area so we gave it a try! Parking, as imagined, was pretty easy. The restaurant was absolutely beautiful and had nice decor all over. The restaurant used lots of woods and plants for the decorations which combined well together. The menu was overwhelming with the many good options, but that's not too much a bad thing. Overall, I decided on the Honey Goat Avocado sandwich and an Oahu Açaí Bowl. Both options were exception and I was very delighted with the presentation and the quality of the food. I recommend switching out the bread for a bagel on the sandwich as recommended by the staff. Overall great experience and would 100% recommend and come back!
google avatar

Chloe G.

Yelp
I really wish I lived in the area so I could come here all the time. The vegan version of the pesto chorizo (which I believe has impossible sausage on it) is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had, vegan or not.
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Their Chai Lattes and breakfast burritos are delicious! I love coming here in the morning, grabbing a latte with my wife, and walk around the beautiful neighborhood. Friendly staff, delicious food. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Duriel E.

Yelp
I love this place! So many good choices! Plus its full of light and plants, if you're a hipster you will find your tribe. I'm not a hipster btw, I'm just wearing mork and mindy suspenders and have a gluten allergy.
google avatar

megan b.

Yelp
Love the amount of vegan and non-vegan options here! I had the vegan tacos and vegan just egg sandwich- both delicious! Looking forward to trying more!
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place, this is the second Nu Kitchen that I've been to and it doesn't disappoint. This place specializes in vegan/vegetarian options for breakfast/lunch, but you can still get chicken, turkey and other meat based foods here. I got the turkey avocado wrap and while it wasn't my favorite dish here it was still delicious. Plenty of turkey and avocado with chipotle mayo bundled together on a wheat wrap folded in half. The one thing stopping this place from getting 5 stars is the prices. This restaurant is somewhat expensive for what it is. The ambiance at this restaurant is very casual and relaxed with plenty of people sitting down talking and others just on their laptops working. Large windows allow for plenty of natural light and plants everywhere also help brighten up the place and make it feel more alive
google avatar

Bailee P.

Yelp
I had such a good breakfast here the other morning! The vibes are amazing. Such cute interior. The smoothie I had was new to the menu and the girl behind the counter recommended it. It was delicious, something with avocado. The pesto chorizo breakfast sandwich was so unique and delicious.
google avatar

Madow N.

Yelp
First time customer. Had an Acai bowl, which was pretty good. Beautifully presented. Big portion. Liked the super crunchy granola although it was a little too sweet for me, and I wish it was gluten free. Service was quick but could have been a little friendlier. Will go back to try some other vegan friendly things on the menu. Street parking nearby was easy to find.
google avatar

Claire G.

Yelp
The food at NU Kitchen is great but I have to knock off two stars because their customer service is absolutely HORRENDOUS. It seems like the staff are so focused on fulfilling online orders that they just ignore everyone in front of them. Every time I have walked in and ordered at the counter, I have had to wait 10+ minutes for an iced coffee or an iced tea. NU Kitchen needs a designated person making drinks so customers don't have to wait a ridiculous amount of time for a drink that should take 2 minutes max. Today I had to wait 10 minutes for my iced tea. I accidentally spilled it and when I asked staff for a towel they handed me two dish towels and I had to clean it up myself. I get that it was busy, but someone should have come out with a caution sign and a mop so that I, the paying customer, didn't have to clean the dirty floor on my hands and knees. Also, the staff wouldn't make eye contact with me and were too busy making food that I never got another drink and just left because it would have taken way too long. If you go here I would highly recommend ordering ahead.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
We ordered from here and the experience was fine. Everything was as expected- the food and taste was very average. I got a Buddha bowl with baked tofu and the tofu was lacking in flavor. The rest we just fine. You do get a good amount of food though in each order.
google avatar

Joop V.

Yelp
The food here is all around healthy, fresh and delicious! I've tried many things from smoothies and juices to grain/acai bowls and sandwiches and I don't think you can go wrong with any choice. The prices are a bit pricey but the ingredients are fresh and they make them to order and make them into a very visually and tastefully appetizing dish for you, so I think they are still worth the prices. The only minus in the star is for service. It's a bit confusing where to expect your dishes to show up (whether at the counter or at your seats). There are 2 separate counters (one for the drink and another for the sandwich), so if they are done with your order and plop your items there, I don't know how you can be sure or identify that that's your order. The reference they call out your order us confusing. Sometimes they call out the order's name, sometimes th e customer's name or sometimes the table number's name). I'm not even sure if you grab a table number whether you are supposed to sit at your table and wait for someone to bring it to you it whether to wait at one of the two counters. I've had inconsistent practices of how I get my orders at this restaurant...so make sure you are on the look out for your orders or go check up at the counter if you've been waiting at your table with your number for too long.

Yelp
Place is the balls ! The bees knees ! The catchs pajamies ! Great cucumber salad - also great paninis. Menu is very diverse. Cute little inside area too. Would definitely return! Thank you for the customer service

Yelp
I would probably give this place 3.5/5 stars if I could give half stars. I came here twice this weekend because it's super close to where I live. My work gets Nu kitchen catered for lunch sometimes and I don't find it tasty when I have it at work so I was hesitant about going to the restaurant itself. Great atmosphere in here! One day I got the Banh Mi and I would give it 3/5. It didn't have much flavour and was dry. The kettle chips as a side were also average. Wouldn't order this again. The next day I got the Oahu açai bowl and I would give this 4/5. The smoothie part of the bowl was delicious. The strawberries could have been a little fresher but it was still ok. The other toppings were tasty except there was too much honey in my opinion.

Yelp
This place is an absolute gem. With beautiful wooden tables, green pots of plants all over, and lovely ambient lights stringing from the ceiling, - you cannot go wrong with coming here. It is perfect for grabbing brunch with a some friends or getting some work done with coffee. I love the efforts they made to be environmentally conscious as well! Instead of plastic coffee stirrers, they had pasta sticks! They also had pasta straws in addition to regular straws for you to choose from. I ordered the chorizo and Brussels sprouts hash. Insanely delicious and it was perfectly seasoned. My boyfriend got the turkey avocado panini with the spicy cucumber salad - YES! he devoured it. NU Kitchen is spacious, has a great ambience, enormous menu selection to choose from, and delicious food! What more could you want??

Jeff L.

Yelp
Horrible and rude service. They ask for a tip up front and then treat you terribly afterwards. I won't blog back there, not that they care.
