What a lovely little restaurant!
I guess that's a good a place to start as any, Number 16 is small but manages not to feel cramped, so maybe 'cosy' is a better way to describe it.
We had a table for two upstairs, and whilst we waited for another party to arrive at another table - remember, small place, so the kitchen works better if they cook in batches - we enjoyed some bread dipped in their own olive oil - infused parmesan, rosemary and garlic olive oil - aged balsamic vinegar. I'd happily have just sat there with fresh bread and that wonderful oil, and a glass of wine for the rest of the evening but we were pretty hungry so were glad when we could order!
I started with the poached ham hock with pickled onions, braised split peas and goats cheese mousse. What a wonderful delight! The block of ham was delicious and quite subtle, and worked well with the braised split peas, cut through by the sharp goats cheese mousse and pickled onions it was soon polished off! The balance of quantity was a little off though, and the dish ended up dominated by the split peas - more tasty ham next time please!
As was Kirsty B's crab salad with gazpacho, avocado mousse, baby watercress and quinoa. We both enjoyed our dishes so much we didn't even pause to try the others.
Main courses arrived after a polite pause. Kirsty had the pork belly with smoked celeriac puree, piccalilli, sprinklings of black pudding, with a potato croquette, served with dashes of an apple and vanilla sauce. A busy but well presented dish that had her mmmmmming on the first mouthful.
For me, bavette steak with sautéed purple potatoes, red cabbage (nicely sweetened with some raisins), on smear of carrot puree and a swoosh of garlic pesto and sage butter.
The steak was delicious, not a cut I'd tried before (it's from the flank I think) but it was juicy and tender, with a wonderfully salted sear. The potatoes were... well potatoes, and the red cabbage complimented the steak well. The garlic pesto was a delight, adding a nice sharp bite to the dish but I'm not really sure why the carrot puree was there. It may have had a hint of cumin in it and, to my palate, it didn't really compliment anything else on the plate.
I still scoffed the lot mind you!
By that point, having had a couple of bread rolls whilst we waited to be able to order our food, we were both stuffed and sated, having enjoyed a 50cl pot of wine (the French rose) with the meal - I do wish more restaurants would offer this option for when a glass isn't enough, a bottle is too much (if you aren't particularly big wine drinkers...).
So, we passed on dessert, despite the many tempting options!
Price wise it's competitive for a good dining experience, the staff were friendly and efficient, and the restaurant has a nice laid-back feel too it which I loved.
Definitely one to go back to, not quite 5 stars but pretty damn close.
